I love Eggs & Issues events because of the timeliness of each month’s topic. In June, we hosted the second of our legislative wrap-ups, this time focusing on the session in Minnesota.
While it was a divided session, with 23 new legislators in the House and 21 in the Senate, they were able to come together for a successful conclusion for all Minnesotans.
Bill Blazer of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce opened the event. He discussed the state chamber’s four main priorities: business tax relief, creating health care options, stopping new workplace mandates, and transportation investments. All saw success except for passing Uniform State Labor Standards.
He also discussed the Real ID requirements, meaning Minnesota driver’s licenses will become federally compliant by 2020. One issue we’re watching locally that was also on the state chamber’s radar was affordable child care and housing—an area that
still has some work left. “Our one-word summary for the 2017 session was that it was successful,” he said. “The legislature made substantial progress toward the development and growth of the state’s economy.”
Sen. Kent Eken, Rep. Paul Marquart and Rep. Ben Lien also took the stage to share what they saw in the legislature. Eken expressed concern for higher education and not enough funding for long-term care. “We are facing demographic changes, the likes of which we’ve never seen in world history,” Eken said. “This is a major challenge and a daunting task, but we need to shine the spotlight on it.”
Marquart noted the difference a year makes, comparing last year’s absence of a tax bill and bonding bill. He also spoke to the first-ever student loan credit and the teacher shortage.
Lien commented on a tax bill for businesses on the MN/ND border, and his concern for student loan forgiveness, which he says is important
because student debt is a real crisis that is slowing economic growth.
One other victory was the Moorhead railroad underpass, which was a great example of teamwork from our lawmakers and our community members.
If you haven’t been to an Eggs & Issues before, I encourage you to check one out. I think it’s so important that our members take time to learn more about the issues that affect their businesses, their community and their lives, and this monthly forum does just that. Plus, it’s a great time to network over a delicious breakfast. I hope to see you soon!

Many employers are struggling to attract and retain a qualified workforce, which made our June Business Training that much more relevant. Brein Haugen from Rasmussen College presented research into millennials, and Tamara Anderson of Dale Carnegie facilitated a panel discussion comprised of local working millennials to share their perspective.
According to Forbes, by 2020, 1 in every 3 adult Americans will be a millennial, and by 2025, 75% of the workforce will be millennials. There are many misconceptions out there regarding millennials, but it seems millennials are just misunderstood.

Millennials aren’t going away anytime soon, so understanding what motivates them is crucial for employers.
On the panel, Andrew Young, Hatch Realty, shared that flexibility goes a long way, and for him that means allowing work to happen when each individual is at their most efficient (for instance, working late or from home some days rather than a strict 8 to 5 schedule).
Culture is also a big factor for many millennials, and working in an environment where they feel heard, trusted and supported. They want good relationships with their supervisors, they want one-on-one meetings, and they want consistent feedback. They value open communication and mutual respect.
Our panel was slightly divided when it came to annual reviews, but most agreed that they’re not effective. Instead of going over a whole year at a time, they prefer in-themoment feedback in response to specific scenarios in which they excelled. Likewise, they want constructive criticism too, because they want to continually grow.
Millennials like challenges, and they like room to prove themselves. They want to try new things, and the trust to run with new ideas. Micromanaging does not align with this generation.

Millennials also value the ability to grow outside of the workplace. They’ll appreciate when employers encourage professional training, leadership opportunities or volunteer hours. They also tend to blend their personal and professional life, which goes beyond working late. They want to be social with their co-workers, so building in time for teambuilding or an after-work outing can go a long way.
Thank you to all our panelists for sharing so candidly with our attendees! Also featured was Kristina Hein, United Way of Cass-Clay; Alycia Peter and Mackenzie McFadden, Rasmussen College; Amanda Even, Dress for Success; and Tyler Fischbach, The Chamber.

We live in an age where we rely heavily on technology for communication — email, instant messenger, social media, web applications and more. But our customers are still human. How do we put that human touch on the service we provide despite our digital delivery?
Join a panel of customer service enthusiasts from a variety of area organizations as they share their tips, tricks and what they have learned about providing excellent customer service in a digital world. We’ll hear from Ryan Aldrich from GoodBulb, Becky Moch from Sanford Health, Deanne Trieglaff from Swanson Health Products, and Mark Youngblood from Discovery Benefits.

The thought of an active shooter in our business or on our campus strikes fear. What motivates the shooter? How do we respond? Moorhead Police Department Lt. Chris Carey will deliver a presentation on the history of active shooters and the lessons we learned from past events.
What should you expect as a response from the police? Knowing the five stages of an active shooter can assist in prevention. Is your business or campus attentive to employee behavior and doing everything they can to prevent being a target? Do you know how to “harden a target”? Knowing when to run, hide or fight should be a part of every employer’s plan. If the time comes to fight, you will find your inner warrior. Does the media influence how we feel or how we prepare for an active shooter? This presentation will provoke emotion and emotion will provoke action. Be prepared!

Gender diversity is good for all, especially when it comes to leadership positions for women in corporate America. Whether on a board of directors or in a public service role, women bring value to the table – and to their companies and communities.
Gone are the days of the “male, pale and stale” leadership. Today we know that organizations function best when they accurately represent their jurisdictions, and that a diverse board is better positioned to thrive in today’s global economy.
But how can we as women add substantial value and not just be the token woman for a checklist? Here, we’ll discuss how you can step up and serve confidently. We’ll discuss how to find opportunities in our own community, how to break into these roles and how to effect positive change once you’re there.
We’ll also hear from an expert panel of local women who have served on boards, who will share their stories and offer attendees a look inside their roles.
Panelists include: Shara Fischer, chair of the City of Fargo Planning Commission; Michelle Lawson, Clay County Judge; Susan Mathison, MD, Catalyst Medical Center; and Shannon Roers Jones, attorney at ROERS and State Representative, District 46. Moderated by Lisa Borgen, American Crystal Sugar.
Please bring children’s books to donate to the Jeremiah Program.

As we reflect on the successful completion of our second YEA! class and begin to plan for the 2017-18 year, we asked our recent YEA! graduates for their feedback as no one can promote this program better than those who have reaped its benefits! One common theme repeated among students was the positive impact our volunteer instructor, mentors and guest speakers had on everyone’s experience. This program wouldn’t be the success it is without the many volunteers who dedicated their time to helping our students and investing in the longevity of our thriving business community.

“Working with my mentor was an eyeopening experience. I’m glad I took advantage of the lessons he taught me.”

“One of my favorite parts was working with my wonderful mentor and getting to meet so many local business leaders. It was really cool to see how many resources there are for entrepreneurs in my community.”

Interested in volunteering for next year’s class? Contact Katie at kralston@fmwfchamber.com.

June’s Eggs & Issues examined the recent legislative session in Minnesota as we heard from an expert panel. For a recap of what happened and how it will affect us going forward, check out page 5.

Business Training last month was all about millennials and how employers can retain and engage this generation of workers. Tamara Anderson of Dale Carnegie and Brein Haugen of Rasmussen College hosted a stellar discussion, which also featured a panel of millennials who shared their perspectives.

In May, the YPN hosted another great Corporate Cup at MSUM – check out the winning teams and photos on page 18. Then last month we also welcomed new members and hosted a summertime picnic at Lindenwood Park.

Women Connect in May featured favorite presenters Tonya Stende of Dale Carnegie and Kristi Huber of United Way, who shared a number of practical tips with attendees for creating – and keeping – authentic relationships. Thank you to all who donated cleaning supplies for Habitat for Humanity!

We had another great time at June’s Business After Hours, where we had a hawaiian beach theme at the Courtyard in Moorhead. Thanks to sponsor Midco and congrats to all who won door prizes!

The Fargo Moorhead West Fargo community continues to receive recognition nationwide for its high quality of life and standard of living. Here are just a few of the acknowledgements from recent months.
Fargo Best City to Build a Forever Home
GoodCall.com recognized Fargo as a prime area in the U.S. to build a lifelong dream home in the “2017 Best Cities to Build a Forever Home” report. GoodCall analyzed 468 cities nationwide. Fargo was ranked #17 in the U.S. and within the top 10% for its comparative custom home cost, growing home values, affordability, population, educational values and low employment and crime rates.
According to an April Newsweek article, there’s no better place than North Dakota for young people looking for opportunities. “U.S. News released a list of the top 10 states millennials are moving to, and echoing its number one ranking as the best state for economic growth, North Dakota was also named the best place for young adults. “
Aside from making lists, our region has also had several mentions in national articles and websites! Here are a few snippets:
It’s
“Recently, the city has undergone a renaissance, with a revitalization of downtown bubbling with inventiveness. Here are some of the best examples of the savvy Fargo of today, a nexus of creativity, sustainability, and an energetic maker movement.” The article goes on to mention our coffee culture, bike sharing, rooftops, contemporary art, local goods, farmer’s markets and craft spirits.
Why Fargo Isn’t Frozen—It’s Cool | Midwest Living
“Broadway forms the backbone of an evolving downtown. Creative shops, breweries and restaurants, enliven the spaces between the landmark Hotel Donaldson and the Fargo Theatre. Until recently, this homey outpost for hipsters was a bestkept secret of the north, known to most people only for a cult-classic film. Now it’s the second-fastest-growing Midwest city.”

What makes your organization unique?
Founded in Fargo, uCodeGirl is a grassroots initiative that inspires teen girls to see themselves as a confident, driving force behind technology and its innovation, rather than be mere consumers of it. Here’s what else Betty Gronneberg, founder and executive director, shared with us.
uCodeGirl strives to ignite the curiosity of girls, to cultivate their interest and increase their aptitude in technology — our collective future. Building confidence, building skills and providing exposure to real-world experiences are the three tenets of uCodeGirl.
Beginning in the middle school years, girls’ attraction to technology decreases as they react to social pressures and gender bias—the result is a downward spiral where girls doubt their abilities and feel alienated if they pursue technology. Interest declines further in high school, leaving few U.S. female college freshman enroll in computing classes.
Intrigued by the question, ‘How can I see more of me in the technology workforce?’ Gronneberg founded uCodeGirl to help young girls rewrite their future. uCodeGirl offers that pathway to technology careers for teen girls by tapping into their creativity, skills and potential.
uCodeGirl makes technology interesting, relevant and age-appropriate through hands-on project-based learning as well as immersion into the real-world. uCodeGirl invites girls ages 12 to 17 to “opt-in” early to the many ways technology solves real-world problems. uCodeGirl builds a village of support around its students for sustainable engagement. We believe upward mobility and economic success should be within everyone’s reach. Therefore, uCodeGirl engages girls from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to work together and build a community. Active and sustainable engagement increases their potential to confidently participate in STEM careers.
While many organizations are striving to improve technology workforce diversity, uCodeGirl uniquely focuses on improving girl’s technology participation during the formative teen years.
Are there any initiatives you’re focusing on right now?
uCodeGirl just launched its first annual Crack the Code: Technology Camp for Girls on June 19. Two weeks. Six unique sessions offer something for everyone. A community of like-minded girls, inspiring female role models/mentors, and a rich collection of programs & activities make this camp unlike any other. uCodeGirls will learn to create & launch websites, develop concept mobile apps, build wearable e-textiles, and assemble & program robots. While fostering collaboration and sharpening communication, they will gain skills to design, take feedback from peers, iterate and test their innovative ideas – all 21st century skills needed to become a creative, innovative and resourceful adult.
What is one thing you most want others to know?
In the next decade, 80% of jobs across every industry will require some level of technical skills. Computing jobs are being produced at an accelerated pace than available skilled workforce to fill them. Women are significantly missing from this equation. Our purpose is to equalize the technology playing sandbox with diverse voices. Our goal is to increase female enrollment in computer science programs in schools and help fill the critical talent pipeline.

Life can be turbulent at times for anyone, but at-risk youth can face even greater challenges. That’s where Youthworks steps in. This year’s ChamberChoice Small Notfor-Profit winner supports youth and their families, helping them meet
goals and establish strong, healthy relationships through a range of programs. Above all, they offer a safe place for kids and families.
On average, approximately 170 youth experience homelessness each

night in the Fargo-Moorhead area. The goal at Youthworks is to reduce that number by helping those who need it most.
Founded in 1991, Youthworks offers professional social work, family counseling and mentoring to youth who are diverted from juvenile court, suspended from school, are homeless, victims of sex trafficking or are in need of food and shelter. And, they are the only local agency that offers a short-term care and assessment center for children aged 11 to 17.
They have two locations in North Dakota (Fargo and Bismarck), but serve people across the whole state and even into Minnesota. In the last two years, Youthworks has expanded programming and staff in the area of human and sex trafficking prevention, education, intervention and advocacy. So far, they have been able to help over 30 victims of human trafficking, and are looking to expand their experience in labor trafficking.

“All these programs are responses to what our community or state needed,” Jessica Fleck, program manager, said. “We really wanted to step in and fill those gaps.”
Youthworks operates a statewide guardian ad litem program, advocating for 1,000 children in deprivation cases before the Juvenile Court.
They’ve expanded their Transitional Living and Pathways to Parenting programs, and recently purchased the home next door to their main campus to allow for more space for homeless programming. They also do street outreach and have a 24hour crisis line.
Youthworks’ success and growth can be attributed to an overarching approach to positive youth

development. And it’s working, as surveys of youth and families consistently show they feel respected and safe at the agency. “We’re driven by treating any and all with respect and humanity,” Joan Neilan, development director, said. “These are not easy situations, and we believe that youth should have a voice.”
Part of how they give these individuals a voice is by hosting a youth advisory board for their clients to have input on their programming. They also involve youth and clients in street outreach and integrate them into the community.
It’s important for Youthworks to give back, and they make a point to offer volunteer opportunities to both its staff and clients.
They’re a part of the FargoMoorhead Coalition for Homeless Persons, and contract with the schools, juvenile courts, Social Services and Sheriff’s department. One message Youthworks wanted to share in this article was to remind that youth homelessness is a thing, but it doesn’t mean homeless kids are bad kids. It can affect anyone, and that is why an agency with such a welcoming atmosphere and opendoor policy means so much.
With its strong leadership and dedicated board and staff, Youthworks no doubt will continue to serve a vital role in our community into the future.
