A note from the President

Happy March Chamber members! Can you believe Spring is (hopefully) right around the corner?

As I look forward to this new season, I am filled with anticipation and excitement to see what is next for our growing region. This is also a great time to reflect on the creators, dreamers, innovators and gogetters who make our community, region and state vibrant and thriving.

This year, International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8, and I’m excited to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments and hard work of women in our region. According to a US Census Bureau survey, there are 2849 women-owned businesses in North Dakota, with nearly 42% of all small businesses in both North Dakota and Minnesota being owned by women.

Women are a vital part of the workforce, and I’m excited to see the above numbers continue to grow. Without these businesses and innovations, our cities, states and country would be missing a vital part of the economy.

The Chamber aims to support female leaders and heighten their impact, and strives to provide resources, tools and connections to enhance the journey of being a woman in the business world. Internally, our Chamber team members are provided continuing education opportunities and are encouraged and empowered to be involved in the community. We are also proud of our Women Connect event series, which filled an apparent community gap and has grown to become one of our largest event series. This monthly event series covers many personal and professional topics, with a mission of bringing women together in a unique, courageous forum to build connections and provide a space to be brave and explore what leadership means both personally and professionally. This event also hosts a national keynote speaker each year; Holly Hoffman, Marissa Orr and Rachel Hollis are a few speakers we recently welcomed to the stage. We hope you’ll join us this June for an incredible afternoon of inspiration as we welcome Mel Robbins as our 2022 Women Connect Celebration speaker.

I invite you to dive in to the March Bridge to learn about and support these working women in our region, and to get an inside look in to what inspires and motivates them. We congratulate and support ALL of the women business owners of The Chamber and our region, and we wish we had hundreds more pages in this Bridge to mention them all. Enjoy this issue, you might just find a new store or business to check out, or even be motivated to start your own!

WHAT DOES YOUR BUSINESS DO?

Catalyst

Medical Center and Clinical Spa is a multispecialty medical center with a personal, patient-focused approach to healthcare and beauty. We offer allergy, dermatology, plastic surgery, ENT, sleep medicine, and women’s health in our medical clinic. In our Clinical Spa, we have the latest in technology in lasers for acne, skin rejuvenation, non-invasive body-sculpting, pelvic floor and sexual health. We have the most experienced staff of aesthetic injectors, including myself, who started the aesthetics industry in Fargo.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ORGANIZATION’S JOURNEY AND BACKSTORY.

My father was also a physician, and when he retired, he gave me his blessing and a thumbs up to start my own clinic. That was almost 22 years ago. Catalyst has grown and flourished, with a mission of leading, serving, inspiring and educating others to lead happier, healthier, more beautiful lives. The flagship office is a beautiful, 14k sqft greendesigned building off I94. We also have locations in Jamestown, Grand Forks, and Detroit Lakes.

WHEN CONSIDERING YOUR JOURNEY AND ORGANIZATION, WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PROUD OF OR WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HIGHLIGHTS?

We are so proud to have a culture of ABCD — Above and Beyond the Call of Duty. We go the extra mile for

our patients, our teammates and our community. From working patients into our already busy schedule, to phone calls after surgery, to bringing smiles to parents and their newborns, and chuckles to the older folks, we love to help others. We encourage kids to become doctors, and offer shadow opportunities for high school and college students.

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOUR BUSINESS IS CURRENTLY FACING?

We are recruiting, just like everyone else! We have several positions we’d like to fill in a variety of capacities. Another concern we have is declining access to healthcare services in our region. In the bigger clinics, patients wait months to receive appointments for medical services. We want people to know that we can help them get access to prompt, efficient and expert care.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT YOUNG FEMALES IN K-12 OR COLLEGE, OR EMERGING PROFESSIONALS IN OUR COMMUNITY, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE OR WISDOM YOU WOULD SHARE WITH THEM THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY?

Invest in yourself along the way. Read, go to conferences, meet new people, ask questions, discover your purpose. Your first few jobs might not be exactly your passion, but do your best for your company, and you will always have some wonderful learning experiences. Be honest and don’t burn bridges. Be intentional about creating and maintaining good relationships, and make time for some fun.

WHY IS YOUR WORK SO IMPORTANT TO THE FMWF COMMUNITY?

I moved here when I was 10 years old. I left when I was 18, and lived in Palo Alto, California; Dallas, Texas: and Seattle, Washington. I travelled to Japan for two months and did volunteer work in Peru for five months. And then I came back home. And I feel at home, and I love our community. I’ve loved the far flung parts of my journey. But I also realize that my travels have helped me appreciate the kindness, humility and strong work ethic that we have in our community. Through my non-profit and entrepreneurial work, I get to connect others to resources and dream big about being the healthiest, most abundant place on the planet. Through my health care work, I want others to feel energized and vibrant inside and out. We want our patients to feel valued and deeply cared for. We treat illness, but we also have the utmost respect for the role of self-care, and in fact, we challenge our patients to take excellent care of themselves. We treat the body, mind and spirit, with a big touch of ABCD soul.

She may be a stranger to you now, but not for long –you are about to meet someone that will make you feel like she is a long-lost friend! If you are looking for a local photographer that is genuine, down-to-earth, and can make anyone comfortable in front of a camera while capturing life’s beauty, look no further!

Lindsey loves to capture the sweet life of newborns, the pure love and joy during an engagement shoot, and the empowerment women experience during her signature “come as you are” boudoir sessions. priority to her and she will work diligently to ensure that the photos taken during your session feel right to you. The undeniable skill in her work is evident from behind the camera as well as behind the editing screen which is powered by her passion of capturing memories that you can carry with you forever.

Photography was not in Lindsey’s plan from the beginning. In fact, she was a server at a local restaurant when she was approached by a business owner and asked if she would consider working for them simply because they adored her bubbly personality and dedication to exemplary service. Fast forward to her accepting a position at that company,

earning the role of the company’s photographer, and growing her passion into what it is today. She would like to tell anyone that struggles with finding their passion or “not knowing what they want to be when they grow up” that it’s okay! Great opportunities are out there and they are waiting for you to discover them. You may surprise yourself when you realize your true potential!

She is proud to have officially launched her website this past year and looks forward to meeting new friends (err… clients) in the years to come. She can’t wait to meet you soon!

helps organizations, teams, and leaders build workplaces people love. We do this by promoting personal and professional growth, as well as team connection. Our SaaS tool helps maximize success by highlighting opportunities to unleash potential, allowing our consultants to intentionally guide clients through experiences that strengthen, connect, and align teams.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ORGANIZATION’S JOURNEY AND BACKSTORY

We’re a group of entrepreneurs who experienced toxic workplaces and/or leaders and saw the havoc it wreaked throughout all our lives and entire organizations. With a lot of research, implementation, and grace from the teams we led, we saw there was another way. We set out on a mission to build community and connection, and to strengthen the well-being of employees, leaders, and teams so they are empowered to be their best selves.

I realized that simply taking action was what helped my confidence bloom

WHEN CONSIDERING YOUR JOURNEY AND ORGANIZATION, WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PROUD OF OR WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HIGHLIGHTS?

We love being able to show our clients the measurable impact their efforts have within their organization. Our SaaS tool was able to give an organization the data needed to truly understand the areas where they were strong and the areas where improvement was needed. The clarity and confidence our data offered increased the speed, effectiveness, and sustainability of their progress.

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOUR BUSINESS IS CURRENTLY FACING? WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT YOUNG FEMALES IN K-12 OR COLLEGE, OR EMERGING PROFESSIONALS IN OUR COMMUNITY, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE OR WISDOM YOU WOULD SHARE WITH THEM THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY?

Two things:

1. You will likely never feel 100% confident, ready, or motivated. Do it anyway. For so long I thought I had to be 100% confident and ready before taking action; I

thought it would give me the freedom to realize my potential. But I realized that simply taking action was what helped my confidence bloom, realizing that learning along the way is necessary.

2. Believe the people who believe in you. Borrow their confidence and belief in you until you can own every ounce of it yourself.

WHY IS YOUR WORK SO IMPORTANT TO THE FMWF COMMUNITY?

Now, more than ever, people are looking for more than a paycheck! People are changing jobs to work in places where they feel supported, connected, appreciated and empowered. Leaders in our community want to meet this need to gain a competitive edge, but don’t always know how or where to start. Our SaaS tool empowers leaders with data from their team to know exactly where to start. Our team of consultants are available to provide additional coaching along the journey.

After working in the corporate world for many years, I realized that my natural ability to be a supporter, paired with my financial acumen, was a combination that could benefit many business owners. I understand that money is emotional, so I aim to lift some of that burden with the help of my great team of accountants. Light exists to make business and life LIGHTer for clients.

Find what you are naturally best at and seek a role that compliments that well!

WHEN CONSIDERING YOUR JOURNEY AND ORGANIZATION, WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PROUD OF OR WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HIGHLIGHTS?

To date, Light Consulting has never cost its financial clients any money. We’ve always found opportunities for clients to increase their cash flow.

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOUR BUSINESS IS CURRENTLY FACING?

The biggest challenge we are facing is finding enough time in the day to serve all the clients and prospects we would love to serve.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT YOUNG FEMALES IN K-12 OR COLLEGE, OR EMERGING PROFESSIONALS IN OUR COMMUNITY, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE OR WISDOM YOU WOULD

SHARE WITH THEM THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY?

My advice for future female leaders (or any future leaders) is to do as much self-discovery as possible. Find what you are naturally best at and seek a role that compliments that well!

WHY IS YOUR WORK SO IMPORTANT TO THE FMWF COMMUNITY?

Many of our clients would not be in business today without our help. Leading throughout the pandemic and now navigating today’s market, several could have gone out of business. Our clients have their gifts and talents, and our role is to make sure they can do what they do for as long as logically possible.

STRATEGIC BUSINESS INSIGHTS FROM ALERUS

FINDING THE RIGHT FINANCIAL PARTNER

Owning or running a business is a thrilling but stressful endeavor. Long hours, few peers, and knowing other people’s livelihoods depend on you can cause many sleepless nights. Add in the false expectation that a business leader should be an expert in all areas of business and the pressure can be overwhelming.

The truth is, owning a business does not automatically make you a financial expert, a payroll professional, or a benefits specialist. That’s why it is critical to work with partners who are experts in those areas, letting you focus on doing what you do best. Look for a financial partner who can provide:

Experienced, dedicated guidance

Business owners are constantly stretched thin, so the fewer meetings and phone calls needed, the better. Find a financial partner that can provide you with one point of contact for streamlined service and individualized guidance. A business advisor can help anticipate needs, coordinate additional expert insight, and provide strategic guidance to help meet your specific goals. With a holistic view of your business and long-term goals, they can provide recommendations that support the overall financial health and success in addition to meeting short-term needs. Perhaps most importantly, an advisor is there when you need them, because your business is just as important to them as it is to you.

Diversified services and capabilities

Financial service needs change as businesses grow and evolve. There are benefits to be gained from working with a provider who can meet your evolving needs, from

short-term financing to succession planning and employee benefits plans to payroll processing. Not only is it more efficient, it can also be more cost-effective to work with one vendor rather than several. And with a dedicated advisor’s guidance, you can rest easy knowing your business’ best interests are top of mind.

A bank’s size also dictates its capabilities, so make sure you are working with a provider who can meet your specific needs. A very small bank may not be positioned to service your request, whereas an extremely large bank may see your business as insignificant. As a result of the pandemic, some lenders may be overleveraged in certain sectors and unable to service solid opportunities in those areas. Make sure your financial provider’s capabilities and service offerings match your business’ evolving needs.

Shared values

One of the best aspects of ownership is you get to choose who you do business with. Banking relationships can last decades, and the right advisor becomes as emotionally invested in your wellbeing and success as you are. Choose a provider who truly cares about you, your employees, and your community. Banks can be more than a business. Those that value doing the right thing, respecting everyone, serving with passion, and embracing change can be catalysts for economic development, community champions, and dream makers — helping you succeed while strengthening the entire community together.

WHAT DOES YOUR BUSINESS DO?

EHP

Performance is a medical fitness facility that prescribes fitness, nutritional, and lifestyle modifications over prescription drugs and medications.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ORGANIZATION’S JOURNEY AND BACKSTORY.

EHP opened its doors in December 2014 and housed a fitness facility and a chiropractic office. In December 2020, we became a Medical Fitness Facility which features two gym spaces as well as three medical providers. What makes us unique is that every single person who enters our doors has a sports physical, movement screen and fitness assessment so we can determine what program is best for them and

their needs. We are the first facility of its kind that allows members to use HSA and FLEX spending towards their membership.

WHEN CONSIDERING YOUR JOURNEY AND ORGANIZATION, WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PROUD OF?

I am so proud to have brought this type of business to the FM area. My staff works day in and day out to better the lives of every person who walks through these doors and that is what is so amazing!

WHAT IS A CHALLENGE YOUR BUSINESS IS CURRENTLY FACING?

Marketing in the small business world can be the tough part. Making sure you get a clear message about who you are and what you can do to enrich the lives of people can be quite a challenge.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT YOUNG FEMALES IN K-12 OR COLLEGE, OR EMERGING PROFESSIONALS IN OUR COMMUNITY, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE OR WISDOM YOU WOULD SHARE WITH THEM THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY?

I have always been told to follow my passion and my job will be something I want to go to day in and day out. And I did just that. I love what I do and who I get to help every day. I get to lead a team who helps enrich the lives of so many people right here in our community.

WHY IS YOUR WORK SO IMPORTANT TO THE FMWF COMMUNITY?

In a world where healthcare tends to lean towards sick care, we are a true health care facility. You come to us to truly get healthy; not just un-sick.

When you find your true passion, you will have no problem succeeding in anything you do.

Asan entrepreneur, I have two businesses going and a third coming soon. Tootsie’s Children’s Boutique carries sizes preemie to 7 in clothing, shoes, and infant necessities. Kenzie + Co. Kids Boutique carries sizes 6-16 for boys and girls. My third store opening soon, Mickey Roo Maternity & Nursery, will be carrying infant gear such as strollers, cribs, high chairs and more. We will also have a great selection of maternity clothing. I’ll be opening this store with my mom, and we are so excited to work together on this adventure. Our customers have also expressed their excitement for this new store, and we can’t wait for them to see what’s coming!

I started Tootsies back in 2017, and named it Tootsies because my grandparents always called me Toots or Tootsie. I knew this was the industry for me. Growing up, all I ever wanted to do was shop and style people, and now I get to shop all day every day with all my customers. I love helping people put together picture outfits, find gifts, or anything else they may need help with. I truly wake up excited to go to work each and every day.

I believe my stores bring a lot of quality goods to the community. Something I have always stood behind is quality over quantity, and I hand pick everything that comes in to my store. I’ve found

more and more people are really starting to see the truth in that as well. My customers depend on me to bring the best of the best to the FM area, and that’s always my mission when I go on buying trips.

Currently, finding good help is my biggest challenge, just like almost everybody else. Spreading the word that we are hiring and looking for fun, caring individuals to join our team is always helpful.

My advice to young females would be to explore all different career paths and find your true passion. When you find your true passion, you will have no problem succeeding in anything you do.

There will remain a strong need for a workplace where people can come together and collaborate...

Connect

Interiors is a certified womenowned business specializing in commercial furniture and interior design. Headquartered in Fargo, we have two additional offices in Grand Forks and Detroit Lakes and are 30 employees strong. We are passionate about creating engaging, innovative, and smart spaces.

As an authorized Steelcase dealer for over 82 years, our core business is delivering high performing spaces with quality products and reliable service to a wide range of clients, from corporate to healthcare, education, government, sports, and hospitality. With years of experience behind us, and a strong community of clients and partners beside us – we believe everything we do, and everything we are, has the power to connect.

As long-time employees of Hannaher’s Workplace Interiors, in 2020, CharRae Chwialkowski, Kim Dean, and Amy Hannaher-Overby purchased the business. The new ownership structure includes two additional female owners, Carlene Wilson and Catherine Mika, from Atmosphere Commercial Interiors and their parent company, Omni Workspace Company. Carlene and Catherine serve as senior business advisors to Connect while also being personal investors.

The five women serve as the majority owners and Omni Workspace is the minority owner. Fostering diversity and growth, we are extremely proud to lead the organization with national certification as a Women’s Business Enterprise through the WBENC, Women Owned Small Business and North Dakota Women Owned Business.

During a time when every connection matters, we believe in the importance and strength of bringing people together to inspire and fuel collaboration. Over the last few years especially, people’s expectations of where work happens has changed. We work with our clients to provide new solutions that give people better ways to focus, collaborate and connect. We remain confident that, while work may look a little different these days, there will remain a strong need for a workplace where people can come together and collaborate, as many days a week as necessary. When you bring people together in spaces that best support their needs – where they work, learn and heal – they will be more satisfied, productive and creative.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE CHAMBER WORLD?

Lookingback, I realize I kind of stumbled in to the industry. During college, I was in the hospitality industry and I was also a volleyball coach. We played in a new facility in Fridley, MN with four indoor volleyball courts and a restaurant/sports bar. I was intrigued by the concept so I talked to the owner while I was there. They immediately offered me a job, so at the age of 22 I joined their team to lead the efforts. I was instructed to join the chamber to help get the “word out” about our facility. I joined the chamber, got really involved and, long story short, the chamber president was going to be leaving and she wanted me to look at the position. I ended up being hired at the age of 24 to lead the Fridley Chamber which then became the Twin Cities North Chamber.

CERTAIN INDUSTRIES AND HIGHPROFILE LEADERSHIP POSITIONS CAN BE MALE HEAVY. WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE AS A WOMAN, LEADING ORGANIZATIONS AND WORKING WITH A WIDE VARIETY OF PEOPLE AND LEADERSHIP LEVELS?

It has had its ups and downs for certain. I have had great opportunities and gained great success not because I am a woman, but because I have had the courageous will, endearing spirit and learned experiences. However, there have been many obstacles that I have had to overcome with traditional male

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN WHO ARE ESTABLISHING AND ADVANCING THEIR CAREERS?

leaders. I have learned that finding common ground and creating connections not only with men, but with all people has allowed me to be a better leader. I also want to mention that I have been blessed with some of the greatest mentors throughout my life - both men and women.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO?

I love helping people, businesses and communities grow and thrive. I am motivated by being able to help create solutions for some of our greatest challenges. I also enjoy learning about businesses and business leaders, understanding their stories, trials and tribulations.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN WHO ARE ESTABLISHING AND ADVANCING THEIR CAREERS?

Authenticity will win out every day. People are drawn to genuine people that they can trust. I would also advise not to let fear get in your way. Too often as women, we self-sabotage to the point that we are our own worst enemy. Believe in yourself and surround yourself with people that lift you up, challenge you and support you.

Bring your full self to your interactions—don’t let norms dictate who you become!

Take time to discover what fills your cup both professionally and personally. With there being so many different job opportunities and industries, this can be a guide when it comes to finding the right career path for YOU. You spend way too much time at work to not feel passionate about what you do!

Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone or try new things. Take risks, keep learning and embrace the growth during your journey.

Find something in the community to get involved in right away! Don’t wait to feel comfortable before you start doing things to grow your professional network.

Understand how imposter phenomenon influences women and communication in the workplace. Form relationships with women who can quickly counteract your imposter feelings and do the same for them.

My advice would be to find a mentor – it is highly beneficial to find other women to share insights, experiences, journeys and advice with.

Learn to be resourceful and self-sufficient and don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Own them, learn from them and move on. Never, ever lose your sense of humor.

Stay curious, focus on cultivating relationships, and remember to show up and be present. In addition, create a safe space of a small group of trusted individuals who can be your outlet outside of work that you can share, brainstorm, bounce ideas off, and gain advice.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE CHAMBER WORLD?

Whilein college studying political science I was looking for an internship related to my field of study. A colleague knew my strong passion for business and policy and suggested I connect with The Chamber. My background in lobbying and campaigns helped me land a Chamber public policy internship in 2018, and the rest is history!

WHAT IS IT LIKE AS A YOUNG WOMAN BEING INVOLVED WITH POLICY/ ADVOCACY AND WORKING WITH HIGH PROFILE AND ESTABLISHED LEADERS?

Being a woman in a fairly male dominated arena has its unique challenges and opportunities. I’ve found the best way to combat any circumstance where someone equates being a young woman to being less than, is to simply prove them otherwise. You may be surprised at how many advocates there are for young women like myself who are involved in this work. I’m thankful for the women that are trailblazing the way, and the men that are lifting us up! Surrounding myself with those people has been key.

Be eager to learn and never stop learning. Never underestimate your skills or knowledge, but display with professionalism. Be true to yourself and be who you are, not who everyone else wants you to be.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO?

I really enjoy the opportunity to work with change makers who are passionate about advancing business friendly policy. At the end of the day, it’s all about the people – the people who make laws, lead businesses and develop communities. I have the pleasure of working with so many of them.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN WHO ARE ESTABLISHING AND ADVANCING THEIR CAREERS?

The best advice I can give to other women establishing and advancing their careers is to be humbly confident in yourself and your abilities, and lean into connections.
