TH E ED AND REW Man, I’m stuck here looking at Sammi. Not the way I imagined spending my day. Oh well, at least I’m in this month’s magazine, which in my humble opinion is our best issue yet. Each month we strive to put out the best magazine we can and each month I believe we surpass ourselves.

This is not easy to do. Each month there’s a lot of “yelling” disguised as discussions and it seems like I almost reach the point of a nervous breakdown every month but with the help of that girl on the right we always put out a magazine that makes us proud.

We have a team who works diligently each month to put FM Stride together but one component that we’re still missing is you. We want everybody in Fargo-Moorhead to be involved in the magazine. Well, seeing as how you can’t stop staring at me, I’ll assume I have your complete attention and use this as an opportunity to share my inner nerd. According to Scientific American, on average a person speaks over 15,000 words per day. Wowzers, that’s a pretty big number. But let’s take that nerd fact and times it by more awesomeness. With approximately 200,000 people living in the FM area, if each person utters roughly 15,000 words per day that equals out to over 3 BILLION words spoken within the community EVERY SINGLE DAY! Now we’re talking!

Jackson and his beefy arms have played for the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. He eventually found himself in Fargo with the RedHawks, where he had a .287 batting average in 98 games with 65 RBIs and 6 home runs last year.

Jackson follows a specific workout routine to keep in shape. Here’s an inside look into Jackson’s rules, hints and routines that help to keep him hitting baseballs clear out of the ballpark.

I’ve been blessed to have a fast metabolism. I can basically eat whatever I want. It’s so fast that the more I eat the better.

My body doesn’t want to function properly without a lot of calories during the course of a day so I try to consume 4,000 to 5,000 calories. Typically, what works best for me are four big meals and two shakes.

This keeps my blood sugar from going all over the place.

I’m not a huge dessert fan…

When I was little my parents were big on not eating refined sugar so I never got into it.

I’ll admit that I even eat some fast food. As baseball players, sometimes we don’t have the best diets, so we do what we can. A lot of times you won’t be in areas where you can eat decently and you’re living in hotels so you can’t cook.

When I’m at home I try to eat a lot of tuna, salmon, rice, beans and chicken.

I use a weighted sled called a Prowler and there are a million workouts that can be done with it. It’s basically a triangle with skis on it and two posts on the back to either push or pull weights from. You can put a strap on it and pull it and do sprints. In baseball you don’t have to do a lot of long runs so I do a lot of sprints. If you do a Prowler push for 100 feet with enough weight on it you’ll eventually throw up.

CARDIO

Baseball workouts are centered on mobility, so I do a lot of single leg workouts. I concentrate on my posterior chain – the backside of your body. I do a lot of squats and deadlifts. You just have to curtail it with baseball because you can’t go as heavy.

Legs

I do a close-grip bench. I’ve had a lot of success adding size this way. I keep my weight fairly high and do 3 – 5 sets.

There are days where I bring the weight down and work on bar speed. A lot of people don’t realize that you need bar speed to move a decent amount of weight.

Race the Red River

Think you’re a rowing machine? Put those upper body muscles to the ultimate test on June 11 with a 10-mile race down the Red River. This race is for canoes and kayaks and is divided into categories for each.

Along with the 10-mile race there will also be a two-mile fun race. The event will start at the pedestrian bridge at Lindenwood Park at 6 p.m. Sign-up by emailing Christine Laney with River Keepers at christine@riverkeepers.org. Registration is $15 to sign-up alone and $25 for a team.

Extreme North Dakota

This is the ultimate in extreme sports in North Dakota. Louis and Clark were the first adventurers to come through North Dakota and Extreme North Dakota (END) hopes to keep the extremes alive. Their adventure races feature running, mountain biking, swimming, treeclimbing, canoeing, map and compass navigation and all sorts of other bad-to-the-bone activities. The next event, Watersports Endurance Test, is set for July 21 and involves completing a marathon downstream on the Red River on a kayak, stand-up paddleboard or teams of two in canoes. THE 30TH ANNUAL

CHASE RACE! 30 YEARS AND RUNNING STRONG For 30 years the YMCA Chase Race has attracted hundreds of people to run the 1K youth run, 1-mile run/walk, 5K run/walk or 10K run in downtown Fargo. According to YMCA’s healthy living director, Caleb Johnson, the Chase Race supports the YMCA’s LIVESTRONG program, a free 12week program dedicated to educating and reconditioning cancer survivors so they can live a happier, healthier life. More information on the LIVESTRONG program is available in this month’s Stride.

Last year over 400 people participated

in the race making it one of the largest races in Fargo-Moorhead. The race will have chip timing for the 5K and 10K races and a medal and healthy snack for all kid participants under 14. Is it okay to drink Gatorade or Powerade all day, even when I’m not working out?

Gatorade and Powerade are meant to replenish lost electrolytes and hydrate someone who has sweat a lot and is dehydrated. If someone is looking to stay hydrated throughout the day while NOT working out, water will do just fine. The less sugar and calories you can consume through your beverages, the better off you will be. When in doubt, choose water!

How do I know when it’s time to increase the amount of weight I lift at the gym?

Let’s say you’ve chosen the desired rep range for an exercise to be 12, and you are able to complete all 12 relatively easy, then the weight is too light. However, if you feel that by the 12th rep you started to struggle, then you are at a good weight to workout at. The goal is to complete all repetitions in each set of your workout with perfect form while challenging your muscles to work as hard as they can. Whatever weight and rep range you choose, you must give your muscles a bigger objective than they can currently handle.

For muscle growth, what’s the difference between doing more reps at a lighter weight versus doing only a few reps at a heavier weight?

Low repetitions (1-5) allow you to use the heaviest weights to put your muscles under the highest amounts of tension. That’s why one to five reps at a heavier weight is looked at as being an ideal rep range for building strength.

However, doing more reps (12 or more) at a lighter weight makes

your muscles have to contract for long periods of time. Lifting in this rep range will also generate greater muscle endurance and cardiovascular fitness as well. So what rep range should someone who is looking for muscle growth focus on? The answer is BOTH! It is very common to ob-

serve men always lifting heavy at a low rep range and women always lifting at a higher rep range trying to “tone”.

The quickest way to get that “toned” look that most people are after is to do a mix of both. If you don’t challenge it, whether at low reps or high reps, there is no reason for it to change.

Some people eat every three hours while others eat three meals a day. How do I know what works best for me?

Someone who eats every three hours has a higher chance of maintaining a healthy weight or losing some unwanted pounds. It is all about metabolism.

An individual who has a higher metabolism has more benefits than an individual who has a lower one. How do you increase your metabolism? EAT!

Let’s take the person with the pattern of eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is very common for this type of person to have low energy and a hard time maintaining or losing weight. When you eat like this your body tends to hold on to the food you eat. This makes it much easier for your body to store

the food you eat as fat, even if it is a small amount. In turn, your body doesn’t like to get your metabolism up too high, because it is trying to preserve the energy that was consumed with the previous meal. Somebody who eats consistently every three hours has a much higher energy level and metabolism.

n March of this year, Berg and Boutiette began the LIVESTRONG program at the YMCA. The free,12week program focuses on reconditioning cancer survivors back into shape by following a specific training plan based on a Stanford study. This program brought hope, happiness and independence back to both of their lives.

“The part that made the most difference is the physical activity,” Boutiette says with a smile. “I was so excited when I read about this program in the Sanford health pamphlet because I needed help getting started and I

knew that if I got started then I could keep on.”

The program is all about helping the cancer survivors reach a level of independence. Before Boutiette started the program she had a lot of problems controlling her arm because of the damage from the nerve cancer. She had problems with simple tasks like stirring food or zipping up her pants.

After a couple of months in LIVESTRONG she can cook for herself and isn’t as reliant on her husband.

One benefit of the program is that participants are allowed to bring along a support person. This is the case for Berg who brings along her

husband of 52 years, Ivan. Her husband has been with Janice every step of the way and it’s invaluable that he can workout with her to support her through the program.

“It’s awesome that you can have a support person along with you,” says Berg.

LIVESTRONG is a free program and financial support comes from grants or fundraising events like the Chase

Race, which will occur on Tuesday, June 26.

“We do all the fundraising ourselves and it’s completely free for the program,” says Caleb Johnson, Healthy Living Director at the Y. When the survivors join LIVESTRONG they are given a yellow survivor t-shirt to show their unity and the help the program offers.

ive years ago Chad Weisgram’s eating and sleeping habits were awful. He weighed 250 pounds and smoked heavily. Finally, one day he saw a picture of himself and realized he wasn’t happy with the person he saw in the photo. Weisgram went to a spin class and left his old, unhealthy habits for a new life on the bike.

Today Weisgram is in his 40’s, weighs a lean 180 pounds and is in some of the best

shape of his life. He races bicycle for the Mitsubshi Laser Grand Performance Elite Team, a team striving to make it to the pro racing level. He participates in road races with distances up to 100 miles and criterium races where he sustains speeds at an average of 26 mph for over an hour.

Weisgram has proven that it’s possible for anyone to change their ways and eat like an athlete.

My day is never the same so I either work out at night, in the morning or over lunch; I’m doing whatever it takes.

Throughout the day I drink three to four bottles of water with Crystal Light. I drink at least one water bottle per hour when it’s above 75 degrees when training or racing.

As far as cheat foods go, I like chocolate chip cookies and doughnuts every now and then.

1. Nutrition

When I was losing most of my weight I was drinking most of it and eating Subway for lunch.

I now eat five times a day: breakfast, morning snack, lunch (usually a six inch sub), afternoon snack (apple or protein bar) and supper (chicken or steak and vegetables). Finally, for my evening snack, I usually have almonds, a protein bar or popcorn. I’ve been living like this for three years now.

2. Hydration

Throughout the day I drink three to four bottles of water with Crystal Light. I drink at least one water bottle per hour when it’s above 75 degrees. Most races are around three hours so I usually bring three water bottles. If it’s really hot I drink Pedialyte the day before because it has a lot of electrolytes.

I do drink alcohol, but I try not to drink the week of a race. If I race on a Saturday I won’t have a drink for seven to 10 days. I really do try to keep it to two to three drinks. There are no all night benders.

3. Motivation

I used to do this because of my diet and to lose weight but now that I’m at a reasonable weight it’s to place better and be more competitive. If it were 20 years ago I would try to keep advancing in the sport. I found it too late in life… I’m sure glad I found it though.

4. Balance

My day is never the same so I either work out at night, in the morning or over lunch; I’m doing whatever it takes. My food is the same way. I’ve figured out what I can eat that makes my body tick. Subway, Quizno’s and any healthy sandwich shop has been a big part of my diet.

Several different competitions – Started in 2009, the competition was only bench and deadlift but has changed to include squat, bench and deadlift. There will also be a deadlift and benchpress competition or simply a deadlift or benchpress competition.

225-pound rep contest – In partnership with JT Cigarro and SKY Digital Advertising, there will be a 225-pound benchpress contest after the event. Over $500 in cash and prizes will be awarded to the person who can bench 225-pounds the most. This event is limited to 25 participants.

ed Halilovic has seen things in his life. He has experienced the horror of seeing his home country destroyed by war and the joy of finding a new life in the United States. Ned grew up in Bosnia during the war before making the brave decision to come to the U.S. all by himself. He arrived with $60 in his pocket and didn’t know

a single word of English but had a dream to start a new life. Ned has done just that. He graduated from West Fargo High School and attended Concordia College before deciding to start Ambassador Cleaning. FM Spotlight caught up with Ned to discuss his time in his war torn homeland, his arrival to the U.S. and the ins and outs to his success.

THE INTERVIEW STRIDE: Tell us about your time in Bosnia.

Ned: In 1992, the war started in Bosnia. I lived in Bosnia throughout the war. I escaped from Bosnia in 1996 and went to Croatia and lived there for a year. I then tried to move to Australia but that didn’t work so I applied to the United States and they accepted me. I arrived to America in January of 1996.

STRIDE: What was the final straw that made you want to leave Bosnia?

Ned: It was a rough war. Lots of my friends got injured and killed. One thing that got me to go was in 1995 a rocket came and exploded in the middle of the street where a lot of people were sitting and socializing. A rocket came from the Serbs and killed 82 people instantly and injured 250 more, including my sister. After that I said, “I have to leave for a better future.”

STRIDE: What did your parents think and what did you do once you left?

Ned: My parents weren’t

happy because if you go somewhere you should be prepared, have some money and know somebody. This time I didn’t have anybody and I didn’t know where to go when I got to Croatia.

After everything they finally agreed it would be better for me to go. So I escaped Bosnia and came to America and started living with a West Fargo family in 1996. The Lutheran Social Services connected me to Mike and Sherri Krystals. We still keep in touch. In 1997, I graduated from West Fargo High School and went to Concordia College where I studied political science and pre-law.

STRIDE: What made you decide to open Ambassadors Cleaning?

Ned: During my last year at Concordia I started working for a cleaning company. During the night I would clean and during the day I would go to school. That started the idea of opening my cleaning business. A lot of managers that I did business with asked me to start my own business because they liked to do business with me. I opened my cleaning business right after.

In college I did an internship down in Chicago with a probational officer and public defense officer. I didn’t like that so this was a perfect fit.

STRIDE: What do you think about Fargo and what does it mean to you?

Ned: Fargo is an amazing city to me. It’s a safe, clean place, good for family, has good values and is very good for business. I live in West Fargo and there’s really good schools for my kids. Anytime I travel, people ask me where I’m from and I say Fargo. They always hear my accent and say, “What?!”

But I always tell them not to say bad things about Fargo because it’s a good place.

STRIDE: Tell us about Ambassador Cleaning.

Ned: Ambassador has accounts with Scheels, grocery stores, Case, retail stores, restaurants and many more places. We have also teamed up with Rainbow International to provide cleaning from flood, fire, smoke and mold damage as well as carpet cleaning.

STRIDE: What were your first thoughts when you came to the U.S.?

Ned: The U.S. was very challenging. It was a cultural shock. Everything was different and it was very rough. I didn’t speak a word of English, I had $60 on me and I didn’t know anybody. When I came here everyone was a stranger. It was tough but I’m so happy I came.

STRIDE: What’s your key to success?

Ned: Hard work, persistence and good customer service.
