I’m a strong believer in getting out and enjoying yourself. We have a difficult situation in the winter that leads to depression and overall mental meltdowns. When I get my tax returns every year it seems like it is always too low of a return. Is there a way to check to see if I am doing my taxes correctly? How? We offer a free review of your last 3 tax returns, if opportunities were missed, we can amend suggestions for tax planning offered.

After the preparation of your tax return ask, and have answered by your tax preparer, what can I do differently.

The Man Behind The Music

From Musician to Agent Gary Bitzer has came, saw, and conquered Fargo-Moorhead when it comes to the music scene. Gary started out playing gigs around the mid 60’s. Now in his 60’s, Gary has taken on the agent role. He provides his services to about 15 bands including local favorites 32 Below, At the Emporium, Skyline, and more. FM Spotlight visited Gary this month to see what happens behind the scenes with the man that’s all about “Behind the Scenes”.

Bam Recording Studio Where do you want to see your business go? I am happy with the

agency. I personally want to be a part of helping a few bands do much bigger and better things. I think I have the connections to do that now.

What is next for the studio?

Samples of what we can offer will soon to be up on our web site.

Tell us about BAM Studio. The studio was put together to give my bands the opportunity to record and sell records affordably. It has been an ongoing process. I really don’t have the time to be that

really cool bands and artist record in our studio. We are not a muitimillion dollar studio that would have a national act hire out, but we make the best with what we have. I can’t say I have ever made a dime from the studio since all the dollars go back into making it a better facility.

“Gary represents the top bands in the area, and he works involved in the studio itself, so my hard for them.” long time friend and fellow musician, Paul Rasmussen, runs that part of the business for me. We relish any challenge and welcome artists to check us out.

What are some fun facts about your studio? Let’s just say our

price is affordable. We are always upgrading our equipment, and the list is always growing. Not to mention, we can get our hands on stuff we may not have (vintage gear).

What’s your opinion about the local music scene in FargoMoorhead? I was traveling approxi-

mately 23 states in the seventies and couldn’t get into Fargo. They didn’t need to hire road bands, because they had so many good bands locally. That hasn’t changed much in the last 40 years. To be a successful band here, you had better look at the past and even current history of artist from this area. A standard was set decades ago that is still in place, regardless of being a touring band or even recording music. After all, it is a business, so treat it as one.

What made you want to use Gary as your Agent?

Gary represents the top bands in the area, and he works hard for them. We knew that if we wanted to expand to new venues and cities we needed Gary to handle the business side of things dealing with club owners and promoters.

What is new for Skyline?

We’ll be playing in new venues, new cities, and new states in the upcoming months.

Also, our first album is in it’s infancy which we’ll be recording at BAM Studio.

What are you working on now?

Gary is working on getting us out and around the area more to new venues. Also, we are currently in pre-production of our first album. We are looking to get into the studio Describe Gary in Skyline’s Words?

The husband and wife met in California and moved to Fargo fifteen years ago. with owner Juan Mondragon How did you and Annelle meet?

We met in Southern California while I was continuing my education in business and attending college on a tennis scholarship.

I am from Mexico City. We met at a tennis court. She was changing careers from interior design to script-writing at the University of California, Riverside.

What made you move to Fargo?

Our plan was to open an upscale Mexican restaurant in Fargo, Annelle’s hometown called Juano’s. The process was moved up in speed because of the explosion of L.A. gangs in Southern California. That restaurant (Juano’s) has now been open fifteen years.

What made you think of opening a restaurant like John Alexander’s?

It had been a dream of Annele’s to open an American Classics restaurant for some time, with the same characteristics of our Mexican restaurants , cuisine being made fresh, from scratch daily, and in an urban setting. Both restaurants are in old historical downtown settings.

What is Your opinion on FargoMoorhead and why it’s good for your businesses?

The Fargo-Moorhead community is very much a “foodie” community; they travel, they are open to different kinds of cuisine, and also keenly aware of quality in product and service. They know it when they see it and let you know how much they appreciate it. They have welcomed us and we feel gratified and greatful.

What makes the dining unique?

We have strived to be upscale but not pretentious. We like urban settings, and historical downtowns that provide a feeling of the city’s history. Guests can dine in casual attire or dress up for an evening celebration. It is all appropriate. The food is American classics cuisine with top-quality ingredients leaving room for a chef’s creativity without becoming “silly”.

Explain John Alexander’s menu and what makes it special?

One aspect of our menu that has been greatly appreciated is the availability of “day fare” food at all times. One guest may dine on a wild salmon dinner while another enjoys a comforting grilled cheese sandwich or macaroni and cheese.

How about the staff and atmosphere?

Above all it is having a staff that understands the true meaning of professional hospitality, that they are there to work toward one common goal, to insure that each guest has a first-rate dining experience from food taste to service. After that we like aesthetics that are clean design, soft colors, somewhat minimal in decor. Music playing is soft jazz. We think these things create a warm, easy ambience.

As owners what role do you need to take?

As owners we are extremely hands-on.

We are committed to high standards maintained at every (literally every) bite, service, and taste. You can only hope to achieve that by being there as much as you can. When we do miss a beat, we want our guests to let us know. We are sincere in wanting to correct any mistake. We believe strongly in investing in our clientele.

For dinner, if we are in the mood for seafood, the Ahi Tuna we fly in from Hawaii every week is outstanding. The Steak Alexander, a tenderloin pan-seared in garlic-herb-shallot butter is our choice if we are craving a steak. As for lunch time, one of our made-from-scratch soups is always a favorite. For a hot sandwich, The Philly Steak Sandwich with extra hot peppers is great, or our “oozing” burger with molten cheese inside two beef patties is crazy good. Finally for Dessert, The “tres leches” cake (three milks) is the most moist white cake you’ll ever eat, but any of our house desserts are decadently delicious.

What’s next?

Soon, we will begin late-night dancing on week-ends. The music will be classic, pop, and rock from many different eras. This will keep up with the classics theme of the restaurant. How are the Tri College Sports doing this Winter?

NDSU’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams are both in the middle of the pack, trying to put together all of their tools to make a run.

Concordia’s women have had a very strong first half of the season and will look to finish at the top of the conference. The men have overcome a slow start and have found their groove.

The experience of the Moorhead men has shown so far, they have been playing team basketball all year. But the women make the point that experience isn’t everything, as their young players are finding ways to win, too.

Are there any unique sporting events in Feb?

Fargo is getting the opportunity to host the National Curling Championship. It is being held at Scheel’s Arena, February 12th-19th. Curling takes great skill, balance, and teamwork, and spectators can catch on to strategies quickly. Be a part of the biggest national event for the most watched sport at the Winter Olympics!

Do you have the scoop on the Fargo Force?

They are a Force to be reckoned with in 2011 (sorry for the bad pun). With Massa and Gothberg splitting time in goal, either of which could be full time starters on most teams, and the fact that you can count on Jimmy Mullin getting points every contest, the Force are sitting in a good position to finish out the year on top.

Where are some good places to go watch some sports in FM?

The most popular place is still Buffalo Wild Wings, but sometimes they get too crowded, so some other places to check out are: Applebees has good food and specials, but unless you are in the bar you may not see a TV. So I would go with JT Cigarro or Playmakers for the best overall experiences.

BROOMSTACKING

The art & tradition of drinking in curling

B

roomstacking is not the act of stacking one’s broom on another’s until a very neat pile has been created. The term refers to a long-held tradition in the curling world in which two opposing curling teams would get together to socialize and partake in a few beverages after completing a draw. In actuality it is more than just a tradition. It is an expectation that still exists today. It dates back to when curling still only took place on outdoor ponds. Teams would stack their brooms by the fire and enjoy a drink or two (usually bought by the win ning team) with their opponents in the spirit of comraderie that curling is known for.

On February 12-19, this tradition will come alive at Fargo’s own Scheels Arena as the top ten men’s and top ten women’s curling teams in the country battle it out during the 2011 USA CURLING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS for the right to represent the United States at the World Curling Championships in Canada and Denmark later this year. Although the focus of this highly competitive event will be to determine this year’s national champions, the social etiquette of broomstacking will still be observed after each draw.
