BECOME A PARENT WATCHING A FRIEND

There’s something special about watching one of your best friends become a parent. You see them step into a role that feels brand new, but somehow fits them perfectly. Over the past year, I’ve watched one of my closest friends raise their son who is a bright, curious, endlessly lovable little boy,

and it’s been one of the happiest things to witness.

It's awesome to see the way he lights up when he sees his parents, the patience they show when he’s fussy, the laughter that fills a room over something as simple as peek-a-boo.

What I love most is seeing the shift in my friend. The same person I used to stay up late with, talking about plans and nothing at all, now gets up early to take care of his son and play and do it all over again the next day.

Being part of their little family’s world, even in a small way, feels like a gift. Watching this tiny person grow, laugh, and discover life reminds me what really matters: connection, presence, and showing up for each other. Seeing my friend raise their son with so much love has been one of the purest joys I’ve known,

and I’m grateful to witness it unfold.

Helping Student Athletes Get Back In The Game

The Swanson Hyperbarics Team

If your athlete plays hard, you already know the drill: rolled ankles, sore tendons, deep bruises, maybe even a concussion scare. The goal is always the same—heal fast, heal fully, and get back safely. That’s where hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) comes in, and why families across Fargo are turning to Swanson Hyperbarics.

Since 2021, Swanson Hyperbarics has built a reputation for world-class care with a simple belief from founder Lee Swanson that "No person is in better charge of your health than you." The team’s job is to empower your family with clear guidance, safe therapy, and an experience that puts your athlete first.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

• Definition: A medical treatment in which patients breathe pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber.

• How It Works: Higher pressure allows lungs to absorb more oxygen, saturating the blood and accelerating healing.

• Benefits:

• Promotes wound healing

• Reduces inflammation

• Boosts circulation

• Stimulates stem cell activity

• Supports neurological recovery

Swanson Hyperbarics at a Glance

• Founded: 2021

• Founder: Lee Swanson

• Mission: Delivering patientcentered, innovative therapies accessible to all.

• Vision: Leading a revolution in healthcare with evidence-based, optimal healing outcomes.

HBOT— What it is, and Why Athletes

Use it

In HBOT, your athlete breathes 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. That pressure drives more oxygen into the bloodstream and plasma, helping it reach areas that need extra support for recovery. Families choose HBOT to help calm inflammation, support tissue repair, and promote new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis)—all pillars of injury recovery.

What it looks like at Swanson: Sessions are in large, clear-acrylic one-person chamber. A trained tech stays right beside the chamber the whole time. Most athletes watch TV or rest; you’ll hear a brief “rushing” sound as oxygen flows and your athlete equalizes their ears (just like on an airplane). Your athlete can stop a session at any time.

Q: Is HBOT safe?

Yes. At Swanson Hyperbarics, sessions are carefully monitored. The most common issue is mild ear pressure, similar to flying in an airplane.

Q: How many sessions will my child need?

It depends on the injury. Mild sprains might benefit from just a few sessions, while ligament or concussion support could require multiple visits. Swanson’s team will walk you through a customized plan.

Q: Will insurance cover this?

Insurance typically covers HBOT for FDA-approved conditions, but many sports injuries are considered off-label in the U.S. Swanson is transparent about costs and options so you can make the right choice.

Q: Can HBOT replace physical therapy or doctor’s care?

No. Think of HBOT as a powerful adjunct. It works best alongside a physician’s guidance, physical therapy, and good nutrition/sleep habits.

Q: Will my athlete feel anything unusual?

Some athletes report ear popping, mild warmth, or feeling tired after a session. These are normal and short-lived.

Common Youth Sports Scenarios

They See

While HBOT has a set of FDA-covered indications (like decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas gangrene, and specific diabetic wound cases), many sports-related uses are considered off-label in the U.S. That simply means insurers may not cover them—even when promising research or international practice exists. Swanson is transparent about that and will help you decide what’s appropriate for your child. Including:

• Sprains/strains and muscle contusions – support for swelling and tissue repair.

• Ligament/tendon injuries (e.g., ACL/MCL) –adjunctive support alongside ortho/PT plans.

• Concussion/TBI – discussed case-by-case with your hyperbaric provider; HBOT may be considered within a broader brain-rest and rehab plan.

• Pre and post-surgical recovery – potential support for healing after repair procedures.

Safety first (and what your athlete may feel)

There are rare but possible risks—most commonly ear barotrauma (trouble clearing ears). Techs coach athletes through equalizing, and sessions use safety pauses (“air breaks”) to lower risks related to longer exposures. Post-session, some athletes feel tired, hungry, or pleasantly relaxed—normal responses to a high-oxygen environment. Diabetic patients are screened for low blood sugar risk before and after sessions. Patients will also have their blood pressure taken before every session.

Swanson also aligns with the kind of rigorous standards you’d expect like licensure, trained providers, annual safety checks, informed consent, and transparent billing— principles reflected in a model State Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Safety & Standards Act framework.

No person is in better charge of your health than you.”

Why Swanson Hyperbarics?

• A friendly experience: Clear chambers, constant communication, and calm coaching make sessions easy—even for first-timers.

• Education & excellence: Swanson recently announced a clinical affiliation with the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences to host medical student electives in HBOT—a signal of the clinic’s commitment to training, research literacy, and best practices.

• Whole-person mindset: You’ll get practical guidance, not pressure. If HBOT isn’t the right tool, they’ll say so and steer you toward options that fit your athlete's plan.

Complementary Recovery Tools many athletes ask

about

Swanson also provides access to technologies families often combine with PT, nutrition, and sleep for a wellrounded recovery plan:

• PEMF (HU=GO™) – pulsed electromagnetic field modality used to support circulation, reduce muscle tension, and aid recovery.

• HOCATT™ – a multi-modal wellness system (ozone/ oxygen breathing, CO₂, far-infrared, microcurrents, full spectrum light, steam, carbonic acid, and full-body detoxification).

Is My Athlete a Good Candidate?

Your athlete might be a fit for HBOT at Swanson Hyperbarics if they are:

• Recovering from a sports-related injury (sprain, strain, bruise, ligament tear).

• Healing from surgery.

• Having concussion symptoms.

• Struggling with slow-healing wounds.

What a Typical Family Journey Looks Like

1. Consult & screening → discuss your athlete's diagnosis, current care plan, and whether HBOT is appropriate with the on-site physician.

2. Patient education & first dive → meet your tech, learn ear-equalizing tips, settle in with TV/audio.

3. Progress checks → the concussion treatment plan is customized, and Swanson Hyperbarics will coordinate with your care team.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES NORTH DAKOTA

provided by Catholic Charities North Dakota

For more than a century, Catholic Charities North Dakota has been helping children find loving homes and supporting families through the ups and downs of parenting. Guided by its mission to serve people in need and advocate for the common good of all, the organization provides compassionate, professional services that meet families where they are—whether they are expecting a child, hoping to adopt, or raising biological or adopted children.

PREGNANCY, PARENTING, AND ADOPTION SERVICES

Catholic Charities North Dakota’s Pregnancy, Parenting, and Adoption Services (PPAS) program is built on compassion and choice. Social workers walk alongside pregnant women, providing support as they make decisions that are right for themselves and their baby. All pregnancy services are free, and women are supported whether they choose to parent or make an adoption plan.

Photos

If parenting feels difficult because of life’s challenges, staff help remove obstacles—whether through education, baby supplies, or parenting resources. If adoption is the chosen path, social workers guide birth parents and adoptive families through every step of the process. Prospective adoptive families can choose from the following options:

• International Adoption

• North Dakota Domestic Adoption

• Identified Adoption

• Out-of-State Adoption

• Relative Adoption

ADULTS ADOPTING SPECIAL KIDS (AASK)

The AASK program focuses on serving children in foster care who need permanent, stable, and nurturing families. Working under contract with the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services, Catholic Charities North Dakota provides adoption services to children across the state.

AASK specialists help prospective adoptive parents understand the unique needs of children in foster care and guide them in finding the best path for their family. The program emphasizes that birth parents, foster parents, and adoptive parents are all important people in a child’s life—and that children can thrive when surrounded by a circle of love and support.

In fiscal year 2024–2025 alone, AASK finalized 328 adoptions for children in foster care.

NORTH DAKOTA POST ADOPT NETWORK

Parenting doesn’t end at finalization, and Catholic Charities North Dakota recognizes that families need ongoing support. The North Dakota Post Adopt Network offers free support services to families who have welcomed a child through foster care adoption, infant adoption or international adoption. These services are also available to families who have legal guardianship of a child in their home.

Post Adoption Coordinators are strategically placed in each quadrant of the state to ensure that families everywhere have access to resources. Services include:

• Evidence-based assessments and goal planning

• Support groups and family events

• Referrals to service providers

• Parenting and professional trainings

• Summer camps and winter retreats for kids and families

• and more!

PRAIRIE ORAL AND FACIAL SURGERY

Q: WHO IS PRAIRIE ORAL AND FACIAL SURGERY AT ITS CORE?

"At Prairie Oral and Facial Surgery, our mission is simple: to elevate our community through active engagement and exceptional care. We serve patients of all ages, providing specialized oral surgery services including wisdom teeth removal, corrective jaw surgery, dental implants, and extractions for orthodontics. Our team believes in a collective care approach—working together to provide a level of comfort and service that exceeds what we could achieve individually. Above all, we treat every patient like family."

Q: WHAT IS THE IDEAL AGE FOR WISDOM TOOTH SURGERY?

"Wisdom teeth are usually best removed between the ages of 15–22. At this stage, the teeth are often still developing, which makes surgery more routine and recovery faster."

Q: WHY DO WISDOM TEETH NEED TO BE REMOVED?

"Not everyone needs them removed, but many patients do. Wisdom teeth can cause overcrowding, impact neighboring teeth, or lead to infections and pain. Removal prevents future complications and supports long-term oral health."

Photos

Q: HOW MANY DAYS OF RECOVERY SHOULD I EXPECT?

"Most patients need about 3–5 days of downtime. For some, it may take up to a week to feel fully back to normal. Our team will guide you with specific recovery instructions to help you heal quickly and comfortably."

Q: WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN I COME IN FOR SURGERY?

"From the moment you arrive, our goal is to make you feel at ease. We’ll walk you through the procedure, answer all your questions, and ensure your comfort with safe anesthesia options. You’ll always be treated with care, compassion, and respect."

Q: WHAT FOODS SHOULD I BUY FOR AFTER SURGERY?

"Soft, easy-to-chew foods like applesauce, pudding, mashed potatoes, yogurt, and smoothies are best. Cold foods can also help with swelling. Avoid crunchy, spicy, or hard foods until you’ve fully healed."

Q: WHAT DO YOU SEND HOME WITH PATIENTS TO HELP RECOVERY?

"We’ll send you home with everything you need—detailed instructions, gauze, ice packs, and prescriptions if needed. We’ll also provide a 24hour contact number in case questions come up."

Q: WHEN CAN I RETURN TO PLAYING SPORTS OR A BAND INSTRUMENT?

"Light activity can usually resume after about a week. However, for contact sports or activities that create pressure in the mouth (like playing a wind instrument), it’s best to wait 1–2 weeks depending on healing."

Q: WHAT IF I HAVE FINANCIAL CONCERNS?

"We have a financial team dedicated to helping you maximize you dental benefits. We also work with some 3rd party financing to offer pay-over-time options. Our team will walk you through financial details so you know exactly what to expect."

Q: WHAT MAKES PRAIRIE ORAL AND FACIAL SURGERY UNIQUE?

PICKS

Sports fans and families alike know the magic of preserving memories. For Michael McCarty, founder of MCM Graphics, that magic takes shape in the form of mini posters that celebrate moments, teams, and milestones in a way that feels personal and timeless.

What started as a creative experiment on Facebook has grown into a licensed business producing unique collectibles for sports fans, wedding parties, graduates, and more.

THE MINI POSTERS

McCarty's journey began two years ago when he started designing custom mini posters for friends and families. Kids, wedding parties, and graduates were among his earliest “clients.” But the idea quickly evolved into something bigger.

Today, those posters range from custom designs for families to officially licensed products featuring teams like North Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota.

Photos provided by

LICENSED AND LOCAL

In 2023, McCarty landed licensing deals with the Bison and Gophers—an exciting leap for a small business owner who grew up critiquing uninspired designs.

“I noticed that everything out there in the collectible space was boring,” he said. “So I’m trying to fix that.”

McCarty's long-term dream? To secure a professional license and bring the same energy to big-league sports.

CUSTOM KEEPSAKES FOR FAMILIES

While sports licensing drives much of his work, McCarty is quick to point out that MCM Graphics is just as much about families as it is about fans.

Recent projects have included wedding party sets, graduation gifts, and even pet memorials. “We’re really trying to encapsulate memories,” he said. “Your kid’s first game, a big milestone, or a photo you love—we can turn that into something that’ll last forever and stand out.”

Parents, in particular, love the ability to create oneof-a-kind keepsakes. Options include:

• Custom designs for weddings, graduations, or special occasions

• Sports-inspired posters with patches, 3D effects, or autographs

• Quick turnaround (often just a week)

• One-off orders—no minimums required

WHAT’S NEXT

Looking ahead, McCarty is focused on securing more licensing agreements and refining his production.

But at the heart of MCM Graphics remains the same goal that inspired its creation: to capture moments in a way that feels authentic, creative, and lasting.

PARENT'S PICKS CARTER CLINICAL COUNSELING

CARTER CLINICAL

Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet it’s often surrounded by myths and misunderstandings. These misconceptions can prevent children, teens, and adults from getting the care they need. At Carter Clinical Counseling, Darren and Elizabeth Carter are on a mission to change that.

Founded in 2019 by Elizabeth Carter, the clinic has grown into a trusted resource for families across North Dakota and Minnesota. Both Darren and Elizabeth hold master’s degrees in psychology and clinical mental health counseling from NDSU, and together they bring years of experience helping clients navigate challenges like OCD, anxiety, depression, phobias, grief, life transitions, and more. With in-person and telehealth options, they serve adults, teens, and children as young as seven.

Their mission is to provide evidencebased therapy in a welcoming environment, reduce stigma, and empower clients to live with greater balance and fulfillment.

COMMON MYTHS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

Myth 1: Mental health issues are a sign of weakness.

Truth: Conditions like anxiety or depression are not character flaws. They are medical conditions shaped by biology, environment, and experiences. Men, in particular, often suffer in silence due to this myth.

Myth 2: People with mental illness are dangerous.

Truth: Research shows that individuals with mental health conditions are more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators.

Myth 3: You can just “snap out of it.”

Truth: Healing takes time and professional support. Mental health challenges rarely resolve through willpower alone.

Myth 4: Mental illness is rare.

Truth: It’s far more common than many realize. Nearly 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. experiences a mental health condition, and as many as 40% of adolescents struggle each year.

Myth 5: Therapy is only for severe issues.

Truth: Therapy can help anyone—whether navigating everyday stress, big life transitions, or deeper struggles.

Myth 6: Children don’t experience mental health issues.

Truth: Kids do experience anxiety, depression, and other conditions. Early support makes a lifelong difference.

WHO CARTER CLINICAL COUNSELING SERVES

Darren and Elizabeth have called the Fargo-Moorhead area home for nearly 20 years. They care deeply about their community and the families they serve. Their clients range from children to adults, each receiving personalized, evidence-based treatment in a safe, supportive environment.

Whether in-person or through telehealth, Carter Clinical Counseling makes it easier for individuals across North Dakota and Minnesota to access quality care.

Above all, the Carters want parents to know that mental health care should feel safe, respectful, and empowering. At their clinic, clients are treated with dignity, compassion, and the belief that lasting change is possible.

COMMON MYTHS ABOUT COUNSELING AND THERAPY

Myth 1: Therapists just listen.

Truth: Good therapists actively engage—asking questions, teaching skills, and helping clients set and reach goals.

Myth 2: Going to therapy means you’re broken.

Truth: Seeking therapy shows strength and a commitment to growth. Everyone can benefit from support at some point.

Myth 3: Therapy is a quick fix.

Truth: Like any meaningful change, therapy takes consistency and effort over time.

Myth 4: You’ll be in therapy forever.

Truth: Many people attend for a specific issue or a set season of life. Length depends on goals and needs.

Myth 5: Therapists will tell you what to do.

Truth: Therapy is collaborative. It’s about guiding clients to discover their own solutions, not handing down orders.

Myth 6: Therapy is too expensive.

Truth: Therapy is an investment in well-being. Many insurance plans cover services, making care more accessible than people think.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE, COMMUNITY, AND LIFELONG GOLFERS

• For juniors with competitive or high school experience

When you walk into the Suite Shots Golf Academy in Fargo, you don’t just find hitting bays, simulators, and greens—you find a place designed for learning, encouragement, and growth. Assistant Golf Professional Lucas Johnson has been there since day one, helping shape the academy into what it is today: a pressure-free, state-ofthe-art golf learning environment that welcomes everyone, from firsttime golfers to varsity athletes.

Photos provided by Suite Shots

A PHILOSOPHY OF FUN AND FUNDAMENTALS

Golf is famously humbling. One good shot can be followed by three bad ones, and frustration can quickly overshadow fun. Johnson knows this, which is why the academy’s programs are built around setting realistic expectations.

“We don’t even touch the driver until week four,” Johnson said. “We start small—putting, chipping, fundamentals like grip and posture. That way, people see success early, which builds confidence and keeps them coming back.”

PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES AND ABILITIES

Suite Shots offers something for everyone:

• Individual Lessons: Tailored, one-on-one coaching for adults and juniors, complete with warm-up and cool-down range time.

• Group Lessons: Perfect for friends, families, or coworkers, with flexible session formats.

• Junior Programs: From “Learn to Play” for ages 4–7 to performance and elite camps for teens chasing competitive goals, the academy develops young talent in a fun, structured environment.

• Elite Academy: Six-week sessions designed for high school golfers serious about competition or pursuing collegiate play, complete with video analysis, swing data, and mental training.

• PGA HOPE Program: A free program welcoming veterans and servicemembers of all eras and abilities to learn golf, build camaraderie, and enjoy the game together.

TECHNOLOGY MEETS TRADITION

Suite Shots prides itself on blending classic instruction with cuttingedge tools. From the Puttview putting green to FullSwing simulators and Foresight GCQuad technology, students benefit from precise feedback that helps fine-tune their game. Club fittings are another growing specialty—pairing golfers with equipment that truly matches their swing.

And thanks to the facility’s design, players can experience full ball flight even in the dead of winter, something nearly impossible anywhere else in the region.

EXPERT TIPS FOR ANY GOLFER

BEFORE YOU EVEN STEP INTO A LESSON, JOHNSON HAS TWO PIECES OF ADVICE ANYONE CAN USE:

1. Start Short to Long: Begin with putting, then chipping, then full swings. Success builds naturally.

2. Focus on Repetition and Flexibility: Golf is a game of patterns. Core strength, mobility, and even yoga can make a huge difference in performance.

THE HUMAN SIDE OF GOLF

For Johnson, it’s not just about better scores—it’s about better experiences. He lights up when describing the “aha” moments, whether that’s a beginner hitting their first pure shot or a student texting him about a personal best.

“Everybody’s swing is a little different,” Johnson said. “We’re not trying to make cookie-cutter swings. We’re trying to make everyone the best they can be.”

That adaptability also extends to veterans in the PGA HOPE program, where instructors learn how to tailor lessons for golfers with unique physical challenges. “It’s really cool,” Johnson said. “We focus on finding solutions—how to get the clubface square no matter what.”

FARGO AIR MUSEUM: WHERE AVIATION TAKES FLIGHT

The Fargo Air Museum is more than a showcase of planes—it’s a hub for education, history, and community. Guided by its mission to promote aviation through education, preservation, and restoration, the museum offers visitors of every age a chance to experience the wonder of flight. Located at 1609 19th Ave N in Fargo, it’s a place where youth, veterans, and aviation enthusiasts alike can connect with the skies.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION

Youth programming is at the heart of the Fargo Air Museum’s outreach. From January through November, the museum hosts Youth Aviation Camps and STEAM Camps to give kids a hands-on introduction to flight and spark interest in aviation careers. Each month brings a new theme, keeping the experience fresh and engaging.

Beyond camps, students can dive into flight simulators, try drone piloting, or attend history nights. “We want to spark curiosity and inspire passion,” volunteer education coordinator Dave Mohn, who has dedicated more than a decade to leading these programs, said.

A COMMUNITY FOR VETERANS

The museum also serves as a gathering place for veterans. On the second Wednesday of every month, it hosts a Veterans Coffee Hour, complete with coffee, donuts, and conversation. The event fosters camaraderie and connection, with attendance once reaching as high as 98 veterans.

LEARNING BY DOING

Hands-on experiences make aviation accessible to all who walk through the museum’s doors. From simulators and drones to guided tours through history, the opportunities for exploration are endless. Each year, more than 800 students from across the Midwest tour the museum, leaving with a deeper appreciation for flight.

BUILT ON PASSION

The Fargo Air Museum thrives thanks to its staff and volunteers, who bring their love of aviation to every program, tour, and event.

“Our goal is to make aviation history accessible to everyone,” Mohn said. “Through education and personal connections, we aim to inspire every visitor—whether it’s a child at their first camp, a veteran at coffee hour, or a flight enthusiast rediscovering history.”

“A

WEALTH OF INFORMATION CREATES A POVERTY OF ATTENTION.”

- HERBERT SIMON

There’s no arguing we’re living in a time overflowing with information, where it can be hard to separate fact from opinion, expertise from passion. Everywhere we look, we’re told what to think, what to try, and what to worry about.

As parents, that flood of information can feel especially hard to filter out when it comes to our kids’ health and the constant barrage of questions that might weigh on you through the child-rearing years.

Why won’t my baby sleep? Why does my child seem uncomfortable so much of the time? Are they behind—or maybe even too busy? Why do they get sick more often than other kids? Are their allergies normal? How do I help with my child’s anxiety or irritability? Why does it seem so hard for them to focus? In what ways is screen time affecting them?

The newest research shows we should be concerned. A study published in JAMA (July 2025) found that the rate of chronic conditions in children ages 3–17 rose to 45.7% in 2023.

Photos provided by Strive Chiropractic

WHERE DO WE EVEN START?

We can’t do nothing, but how do we sort through all the information and noise to begin to make an impact on our family’s health?

We, at Strive Chiropractic, aren’t aiming to congest your mind with more information or opinionated help, but we want to reassure you that you do not have to have the answers to everything. The best place to start evaluating the state of your child’s overall health is by having their nervous system checked!

WHY THE NERVOUS SYSTEM, YOU MIGHT ASK?

Think of the nervous system as your child’s “command center.” It’s the way the brain talks to the body, using tiny electrical and chemical signals that travel through nerves. This system makes sure the basics—like breathing, heartbeat, and digestion— happen automatically. It also manages bigger things, like movement, memory, emotions, focus, and even how your child responds to stress.

In other words, the nervous system helps everything in the body work together and allows kids to react to the world around them in a healthy way, much like traffic signals keep traffic moving the way it should.

See why evaluating the nervous system can help identify why your child might be experiencing certain symptoms, if their body is misfiring, and how issues have compounded over time?

With over 40+ years of combined experience and over 16 years of helping real patients in Fargo-WF-Moorhead-DL and beyond achieve real results, we, at Strive Chiropractic are the experts at neurologically-focused chiropractic care. To start, we take an objective look at your child’s nervous system - measuring how well their body can adapt to, handle, and manage the stressors of everyday life. The best part is, our scanning technology allow us to create clear, easy-to-understand reports that show you exactly what’s happening inside your child’s body.

Strive Chiropractic is here to partner with you in your family’s health, but most importantly, we want you to feel heard and supported in this challenging time of raising kids. Even the Surgeon General’s Advisory warns that almost half of parents—48%—say their stress feels completely overwhelming most days (hhs.gov). Relatable? Our answer is simple...

Just. Get. Checked.

There is nobody more equipped to do right by their children than you, their parent, and we trust you’ll find that our nervous system screenings will leave you feeling empowered!

Most parents know the importance of regular dental checkups, but many are surprised to learn that orthodontic checkups should begin much earlier than the teenage years. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child see an orthodontist by age 7.

WHY SEE AN ORTHODONTIST AT 7?

At this stage, children typically have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. That combination gives orthodontists a clear look at how the bite, jaws, and smile are coming together—like seeing the picture on the puzzle box while the pieces are still being placed.

• Early crowding: Collisions in developing teeth may lead to lengthier and more costly treatment.

• Bite alignment: Overbites, underbites, and crossbites can often be identified while the jaws are still developing.

• Growth patterns: Jaw growth and spacing are easier to guide at this stage.

• Peace of mind: For many families, the first exam simply confirms everything is right on track.

Photo provided by WE Ortho

WHAT PARENTS SHOULD KNOW

While many children won’t need braces at age 7, some do. Others may benefit from early expansion or other small interventions that set their bite and alignment up for lifelong health. Catching potential issues early can also shorten or simplify future treatment, often decreasing the overall costs of orthodontic care.

At WE Ortho, the first visit is designed to be gentle, comfortable, and fun. From game rooms in each office to OrthoBucks that can be redeemed for prizes and gift cards, every child’s experience is meant to be joyful.

SETTING KIDS UP FOR LIFELONG CONFIDENCE

The age-7 orthodontic exam can be thought of as a wellness milestone, much like a first eye exam or sports physical. A healthy smile does more than look good—it supports eating, speaking, and confidence at school and in friendships.

By starting early, parents gain clarity about whether treatment is needed right away or can wait until later, giving children the best chance at lifelong oral health and confidence.

WHY FAMILIES CHOOSE WE ORTHO

• Expertise: The only practice in town with two board-certified orthodontists—Dr. Emerson Ehlis and Dr. Ryan West.

• Advanced technology: An in-house digital lab produces fully customized appliances and retainers using cutting-edge tools.

MORE THAN STRAIGHT TEETH

WE Ortho is about much more than straightening smiles. The practice’s mission is to reshape how orthodontics is understood and delivered in the community.

For children, that means early exams and treatment to support proper jaw growth and bite alignment. For adults, it means lasting comfort and functional alignment. For every family, it means orthodontic care that is advanced, efficient, and fun.

Dr. Ehlis and Dr. West are united in their belief that orthodontics should be a lifelong story of health and confidence. At WE Ortho, families are welcomed into that story—one that builds not just smiles that last, but lives that thrive.

ASK THE EXPERT:

HOW TO KEEP A HEALTHY HOME WITH 4 SEASONS INSULATION

HOW DOES PROPER INSULATION IMPACT INDOOR AIR QUALITY?

REDUCES DRAFTS AND POLLUTANTS

Well-sealed walls, attics, and basements slow outdoor leaks, keeping out dust, pollen, exhaust, and mold spores.

CONTROLS MOISTURE AND MOLD

With vapor barriers, insulation prevents condensation inside walls. Without it, trapped moisture fosters mold, odors, and spores that trigger allergies or asthma.

IMPROVES COMFORT AND HUMIDITY

Insulation steadies temperatures and humidity. Stability eases HVAC stress, limits microbial growth, and reduces irritants that rise with temperature swings.

SUPPORTS HVAC PERFORMANCE

Lower heating and cooling loads help systems run efficiently. Fewer cycles mean less dust, better filtration, and cleaner indoor air.

CAN INSULATION HELP REGULATE HUMIDITY AND REDUCE ALLERGENS?

HUMIDITY REGULATION

Insulation blocks moist air from reaching cold surfaces and seals leaks that let in humid summer air or dry winter air. Balanced humidity protects against rot, mildew, and mold.

ALLERGEN REDUCTION

Air-sealing products like spray foam cut drafts that carry pollen and dust. Moisture control lowers mold spores, and sealing cracks deters pests whose droppings often trigger allergies.

WHAT ROLE DOES INSULATION PLAY IN COMFORT AND WELLBEING?

REDUCES HOT & COLD SPOTS

Insulation keeps heat in during winter and blocks it in summer, preventing drafty rooms and overheated upstairs spaces.

EASES STRAIN ON HVAC

Steady temperatures reduce run-time, extend equipment life, and make comfort feel natural.

COMFORT, SLEEP, AND HEALTH

Stable conditions reduce stress, support focus, and promote deeper sleep. Because insulation helps manage humidity and allergens, it also improves respiratory health.

PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS

A well-regulated home provides peace of mind and a sense of control.

Are You Struggling with Erectile Dysfunction?

Treat it at the source!

For many men, erectile dysfunction (ED) is an uncomfortable subject—something they don’t want to talk about, even with their doctor. However, it's a common issue, and Everest Regenerative Medicine is working to address at its root cause.

Understanding the Most Common Cause of ED

ED isn’t one-size-fits-all. In fact, there are four main categories—psychogenic (mental health-related), neurogenic (nerve-related), iatrogenic (medication or surgery-related), and vasculogenic (blood vessel-related). According to Dr. Arden Beachy, vasculogenic ED makes up around 80% of cases.

That’s why Everest is focused on a new, non-invasive treatment designed to restore blood flow. The clinic uses the Apex RF device, which applies radio frequency (RF) energy to heat and repair small blood vessels and soft tissue in the genital area. This improves circulation, allowing tissue to fill with blood as intended.

“Those vessels are millimeters in size, much smaller than the ones in your heart or brain,” Beachy said. “When they’re restricted, blood flow is reduced. That’s why ED can actually be an early warning sign of vascular disease, even before a heart attack or stroke.”

Why This Treatment Stands Out

Traditional solutions—like Viagra or Cialis—may temporarily improve performance, but they don’t address underlying vascular health. Pills also come with drawbacks and side effects such as headaches or reflux, the need to remember doses, and the lack of spontaneity. Injections, while effective for some, can be painful and intimidating.

By contrast, radio frequency treatment targets the structural issue itself. “If you can heal the vessels and improve circulation, things should work naturally again,” Beachy said.

The process is straightforward:

• Eight sessions

• About 15 minutes each

• No pain, no downtime

For men with mild to moderate ED—those still able to achieve erections but struggling with firmness, consistency, or duration—this treatment offers a way to regain confidence without relying on ongoing medications.

A Comprehensive Approach to Men’s Health

Everest doesn’t just stop with one tool. The clinic also considers hormone therapy, IV treatments, ozone therapy, PRP (platelet-rich plasma), and even shockwave therapy depending on the patient’s underlying causes.

The philosophy is to stack the right interventions to give men the best chance at lasting results.

“It’s not about masking the problem,” Beachy said. “It’s about restoring function and overall health.”

Lifestyle factors matter too—quitting smoking, managing blood pressure and cholesterol, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising regularly can all strengthen outcomes. When combined with RF therapy, those changes often mean better results and less need for repeat treatments.

Did

The Confidence Factor

ED affects more than the bedroom. It impacts selfesteem, relationships, and overall quality of life. And because many men delay seeking treatment, issues often worsen over time.

That’s why Beachy strongly recommends early action

“The sooner you deal with it, the more likely you’ll get the outcome you want and the less struggle you’ll face, both personally and in your relationships.”

Why Fargo–Moorhead is ready for a large-scale children’s museum — and how you can help build it.

We North Dakotans know what we signed up for living in the Great Plains: frigid winters, blustery winds, wildfire smoke, and the occasional scorcher of a summer day. We also know what keeps us here—an inviting community, Midwest goodbyes, lefse and hot dish, and a steady stream of young professionals who put down roots and become young families.

As our region grows, new residents bring memories and expectations from their hometowns—and hopes for amenities that keep them here and support their families. The Fargo–Moorhead metro reached ~255,000 residents in 2023 with a median age of 33 (younger than the nation overall). The age profile is kid-forward—6.3% under age 5 and 16.1% ages 5–18—and long-term growth is projected to approach 340,000 by 2045 (about +35%). Together, these trends create the perfect moment to build family-centered destinations in the FM area.

The Great Plains Children’s Museum aims to be that daily destination: hands-on, playbased exhibits indoors; a nature-rich campus outdoors; and something our region has never had before—a Caregiver Coordinator Office that helps parents and caregivers find the right local support without stigma, bias, or confusion.

• Magic City Discovery Center (Minot): 28,000 sq. ft., ~$20M; opened 2023.

• Children’s Museum of South Dakota (Brookings): 44,000 sq. ft. with ~105,000 annual visitors.

“Roaming the Plains” will connect an indoor nature center to outdoor play with water and winter features. Custom Playground Designer’s Monstrum.dk are an inspiration for board members of Great Plains Children’s Museum when planning the outdoor playscape.

The nonprofit Board of Directors is planning a 20,000–30,000 sq. ft. museum on 10–20 acres, designed primarily for ages 0–12. Six core exhibit zones reflect who we are as a region:

• Roaming the Plains — An indoor nature center with an immersive outdoor nature playspace featuring a wading river, splash pad, natural play structures, and seasonal ice

• Arts & Parts — Multi-medium, creative exploration for little hands.

• Seed to Table — Exploration of all aspects of agriculture from planting and raising livestock to harvesting, processing, and culinary.

• Build It / The Garage — Immersion into skilled trades (plumbing, construction, welding) and craftsmanship (woodworking, etc)

• FUNdamentals — Miniature town with retail storefronts, a hospital, civil services, and more.

• SENSEsations — Multisensory experiences beyond the five senses

Every exhibit will be engineered for repeat visits and intentional, regular content changes, so families and daycares can come weekly—not just once a year.

In our recent survey of 400+ local respondents, 98% support building a children’s museum of this scale; 83% say they’d visit monthly to daily. Caregivers and parents agree; 72% want more opportunities to connect with one another, and 89% agree our community needs more affordable, play-based places for children 0–12. That’s a powerful mandate—and a design brief.

We’re designing for daily use, not once-and-done or an annual outing.”
Now more than ever we need to get back to the basics of play and create a local village of support. Before having kids we are all told, it takes a village—but for many, that village isn’t a reality. Instead, we rely on social media influencers, internet searches, or the limited perspectives of the resources we know about. Our children deserve a playful childhood where their parents and caregivers are supported without judgement, bias, or fear to seek out support they need.”

The Children’s Museum of South Dakota (pictured) features a pintsized grocery store for littles to shop, checkout, and explore.

Yes, the Great Plains Children’s Museum is being built for play— but the mission goes deeper. The Caregiver Coordinator Office (CCO) is a neutral, non-clinical front door where parents can ask questions—“Is my child’s speech on track?”, “Life is so different since giving birth; how are other parents doing this?”—and receive warm referrals to trusted local services, resources, and programs across health, development, nutrition, mental wellbeing, and early learning. Partners (public health, hospitals, therapy clinics, Head Start, Extension, libraries, safety coalitions, and parent groups) can host satellite workshops and pop-ups on site, so families discover help where they already are: at play.

The museum is the hub—a place kids can’t wait to return to and where caregivers feel welcome every day. From that hub, our spokes reach into the community:

• On-site: “Ask-a-Therapist” hours (education + screening), car-seat checks, safety days, nutrition classes, storytime, milestone pop-ups.

• Off-site: pop-ups at parks, markets, and schools to meet families where they are—building momentum before opening day.

The Caregiver Coordinator Office will host partner-led workshops that connect families to trusted local resources like storytimes, “ask-an-OT”, montessori-style learning, and more.

Right now, the metro doesn’t have a nonprofit children’s museum. Families drive to Fergus Falls’ Otter Cove, Brookings’ Children’s Museum of South Dakota, or Minot’s Magic City Discovery Center—or visit KidCo. Children’s Museum in Moorhead, a private, timed-session play space. We’re building a community-owned, mission-driven option designed for daily use and deep partnerships. Comparable scale elsewhere: Minot opened the 28,000-sq-ft Magic City Discovery Center (~$20M) in 2023, showing what a mid-sized regional museum can accomplish. Brookings’ museum draws ~105,000 annual visitors in a city smaller than Fargo—clear evidence of regional demand. Statewide momentum continues with the Grand Forks Children’s Museum effort advancing planning and fundraising.

• Caregiver Coordinator Office: Launch staffing, a resource library, and partner hours that shorten the path from “I’m worried” to “I’ve got help.”

• Roaming the Plains & Nature Play: A year-round indoor/outdoor continuum celebrating prairie, weather, and water.

• Build It / The Garage: Real-world tools and trades exploration that spark curiosity and confidence—early workforce inspiration, Fargo-style.

Great Plains Children’s Museum is a local 501(c)(3) founded in October 2024 and recognized as tax-exempt in February 2025. We’re currently volunteer-run and focused on securing our final site and founding gifts to begin the long work of making this a reality.

• Lead gift or land: Become a Founding Land Partner (10–20 acres or more) or make a six-figure leadership gift to launch the caregiver programming, phase planning, and outdoor playscapes.

• Program partners: Health, early-childhood, literacy, safety, nutrition, and therapy partners—join our intent-topartner roster so we can activate programming on day one (or earlier if we secure a temporary facility).

• Families: Take our survey, join our e-newsletter, and share the vision with friends.

• Everyone: Volunteer at our pop-ups, shop our Amazon wish list, and make a tax-deductible gift (on our website or on Giving Hearts Day).

Fargo–Moorhead–West Fargo’s Best Free & Family-Friendly Festivals

The Yearly Big Ones Seasons of

The Red River Valley doesn’t just embrace its four seasons—it celebrates them. From icy adventures that make the most of a North Dakota winter to vibrant outdoor markets, music nights, and holiday traditions, Fargo, Moorhead, and West Fargo come alive all year long with events that bring families, neighbors, and visitors together.

What makes these gatherings special isn’t just their scale or programming—it’s the way they feel woven into the fabric of local life. You don’t just attend a festival here; you participate in a tradition, a community ritual that’s as much about connection as it is about entertainment. Best of all, many of the area’s most beloved events are free or family-priced, making them accessible to everyone.

Below, we highlight some of the most anticipated annual and seasonal happenings—from summer music series to frosty winter fun—and why they’ve become cornerstones of community life.

Fargo Police Community Picnic

The Fargo Police Community Picnic gives a chance for residents to meet the men and women who keep the city safe in a relaxed, family-friendly environment.

The 2025 event, held on June 18, had added significance as it marked the 150th anniversary of the Fargo Police Department.

Make sure to attend next year!

Downtown Fargo Street Fair

If there’s one event that defines summer in Fargo, it’s the Downtown Street Fair. For three days every July, Broadway and its side streets close to traffic and open to an explosion of color, creativity, and community. The 2025 fair ran from July 17–19, drawing tens of thousands to the heart of the city.

With more than 200 vendors offering everything from handmade jewelry to regional art, it’s both a shopper’s paradise and a feast for the senses. Food stalls tempt with fair favorites, while local breweries and wineries showcase regional flavors. But the fair is more than shopping and snacking—it’s entertainment, too.

On the Broadway Square stage, programming kept families engaged all day with storytimes, dance groups, theatre performances, and music from acts like Javi & The Brambled Hearts. New in 2025 was the debut of the fair’s first official mascot—the mischievous “Downtown Raccoon”—who quickly became a kid favorite.

Free to attend and packed with variety, the Street Fair is a rite of summer, drawing locals and tourists alike into a vibrant celebration of Fargo’s creative spirit.

Celebration

Broadway Square Summer Music Series

Downtown Fargo’s Broadway Square transforms into an openair concert venue each summer. This past series, which ended on September 3, took place on three other dates during the summer.

West Fest

Few events capture the hometown spirit of West Fargo like West Fest, a weeklong celebration held this year from September 14–20, 2025. While activities unfold all week—ranging from family-friendly events in the parks to a community 5K and 10K race—the heart of West Fest is the grand parade on Saturday, September 20.

The parade drew thousands, with colorful floats, marching bands, local clubs, and community groups filling Sheyenne Street. Kids scramble for candy tossed from decorated trailers, while neighbors cheer on their favorite entries.

For longtime residents, West Fest is a marker of community pride and tradition. For newcomers, it’s one of the best introductions to the welcoming, family-centered culture of West Fargo.

Make sure to attend next year!

Christkindlmarkt

As autumn fades and the air grows sharp with the promise of snow, the community shifts into holiday mode—and nothing captures that spirit quite like Christkindlmarkt. Held over two weekends in November at the Fargo Civic Center, the event transforms downtown into a German-style Christmas market brimming with light, music, and festive energy.

Walking through the entrance feels like stepping into a snow globe. Outside, fire pits crackle in the Winter Wonderland, strings of lights twinkle overhead, and families sip hot cocoa while children craft ornaments at DIY stations. Inside, the Civic Center becomes a cozy market filled with artisan vendors, holiday treats, and the Bier Hall hosted by Drekker Brewing, where live music keeps spirits high.

Admission is just $5 for adults, while kids 17 and under are free—a thoughtful touch that makes the experience truly family-friendly. Many return year after year, making Christkindlmarkt a cherished tradition that bridges cultural celebration with community warmth. Upcoming!

Kpheck Studios

Meet The

MAKER

Kellie Pfeifer is connecting, creating, inspiring, and crafting spaces for the creative community all around! From her own artwork to Artsy Fartsy Markets and Doodle Nights, she is an empowering creative. Check out more about the maker—Kpheck Studios—below!

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Kellie, a North Dakota native, neurospicy visual artist with a passion for bright colors and silly things.

I grew up in Valley City, ND, spent a decade as a cheesehead in Madison, WI, and moved back to Moorhead with my hubby and son a number of years ago. We also have a border collie named Moe, who is our sweet little sour patch gal that yells a lot. We sure do love our spicy goober, though.

I am a natural hermit and like to spend my free time tinkering about the house, creating things, tending to my plants, and listening to spooky podcasts and anything historyrelated. When I leave my goblin cave, I enjoy spending quiet time in the woods, hunting for thrifty store scores, and finding fun new places to explore with the fam.

Describe what type of products you make under Kpheck Studios?

Here in my private studio in Moorhead, I’m kind of all over the place. I am an illustrator, abstract painter, amateur photographer, and creative connection elf.

What is a word that best describes you?

A perfect word to describe me? I’d have to say “reSILLYent” (get it, resilient and silly mushed together?) I’m tough to knock down and also a very silly goose.

How did you get started with your handcrafted business?

I have been creating for as long as I can remember, doodling on newspapers, making my own comic books as a kid, and creating stories to go along with my drawings. Art has always been a safe space for me to explore emotions and find a little peace from this very busy brain.

I started Kpheck Studios in 2020 after a painfully long artistic block and haven’t looked back since!

What advice would you give to someone else looking to start a handcrafted/maker business?

Follow your gut and trust in your process. It is not for the faint of heart, but if you truly want it, be patient, work towards your goal, and have faith in yourself. Also, listen to those gut twinges when something is telling you a project or business relationship doesn’t align with your path.

What advice would you have given yourself five years ago?

If I could give myself advice five years ago, I’d tell her to ask for more advice, haha!

What are your personal favorite items you've created so far?

My favorite thing I’ve created? Besides the abstract paintings where I intuitively play with supplies, I’d have to say the Art After Dark/Artsy Fartsy Markets.

What is something you've enjoyed the most about doing this handcrafted business?

I have really found a ton of chosen family through these things and have been able to watch others meet and grow friendships and celebrate each other. It’s a pretty heart-sparkly feeling.

What is the most challenging thing?

One of the more difficult things I’ve ever done: I would have to say, in my earlier days, a piece that I did on commission that I just struggled with through the whole process. It was an abstract painting in a color palette that wasn’t really me, and the communication aspect was difficult. Thankfully, they loved it, but man, it made me sweaty a couple of times!

You host the Artsy Fartsy Markets, workshops, and Doodle Nights, and keep people getting creative and sharing their own work! Can you tell us more about those and how people can find more info?

Along with the markets mentioned earlier, I also host classes and mini workshops in my studio, as well as Doodle Club nights at various places around town through our collective group, FM Underdog Artists. It’s a group of eclectic creatives that have just kind of randomly found each other and started doing cool stuff together, and inviting anyone who wants to join along with us!

What is your most popular item you sell currently?

As far as what I make and sell, I would have to say my most popular items are my sweet-and-spicy woodblocks and stickers. But, my main focus has primarily been on markets and trying to create more community art events.

OF BEING SILLY

s I get closer to my 30s and think about the kind of parent I want to be, I’ve realized something: play isn’t just for kids.

I say this as someone who works at Folkways, a local nonprofit that creates community events designed to bring people together. I’ve learned to

fully immerse myself in family-friendly fun, whether that means blowing bubbles, dressing up in clown costumes, or unapologetically skipping down the street. I’m a self-declared “certified cool aunt,” and I keep play alive in both my professional and personal life.

But lately I’ve been asking myself: why does play matter so much for adults, too?

BY STUDIO

As kids, play comes naturally; it's imaginative, creative, and full of presence. We notice everything. A single summer feels endless, and even a routine trip to the grocery store with your mom still feels new.

WHY ADULTS NEED PLAY HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF FAMILYFRIENDLY EVENTS (AT ANY AGE)

As adults, though, play slips away when childhood ends. Our calendars fill with deadlines and commitments, and life starts to blur into routine. We look back on childhood with nostalgia, longing for the way time used to feel slower, fuller, more alive.

But here is my take: what we’re missing isn’t just youth, its presence. Play is one of the simplest, most powerful ways to bring that back. It breaks routine, sparks curiosity, and helps us notice again. And that’s not wasted time, it’s how we reclaim it.

Family-friendly places in our community aren’t just for the kids, they’re for you, too. They’re spaces to connect, build traditions, and reawaken the part of yourself that once delighted in the small things.

UPCOMING FOLKWAYS EVENTS

RED RIVER MARKET NIGHT BAZAAR

Every Saturday @ Broadway Square through October 25th.

Night Bazaar Spook @ Brewhalla on October 30th.

Two weekends @ Fargo Civic Center November 21st-23rd and November 28th-20th.

HERE ARE SIX WAYS TO CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO PLAY AGAIN:

CHRISTKINDLMARKT

Practice whimsy. Don’t just let the kids dress up, lean into it yourself. Each Night Bazaar that Folkways puts on has a theme, so put on a silly costume, dance to live music, and let yourself be part of the spectacle.

Practice noticing. Routines blur adult life. Break that by slowing down. At Christkindlmarkt, roaming performers, from elves to Cindy Lou Who to Nutcracker dancers, wander the crowd. Look closely, and let yourself delight in the details.

Send an invitation. As kids, making friends was easy, you’d sit next to someone new, and suddenly you had a playdate. Invite a neighbor or another parent to join you at the next market. While the kids stack blocks, sip a coffee with someone new and connect.

Stay curious. Curiosity is a form of play. At the Rourke, the second floor features a permanent children’s exhibition with interactive installations, while upstairs you’ll find local art and even a cozy library. Kids can explore and play, and adults can spark their own curiosity, whether by wandering the galleries or opening a book to learn something new.

SKATE CITY CHILDREN’S MUSIC ACADEMY

Reconnect with nostalgia. From arcade games to dice contests to the same retro carpet you remember from your childhood, Skate City is pure time travel. Skating is affordable fun and a reminder that joy doesn’t need to change with age.

Be embarrassingly bad at something. As kids, we were always learning new skills without worrying about failure. When was the last time you let yourself do that? At the Children’s Music Academy, parents take music classes alongside their kids. You learn, play, and laugh together, and the first class is free.

PLAY AS COMMUNITY

Play is something we have to be intentional about. It’s not gone from our adult lives, it just needs space to grow. Luckily, our community is filled with opportunities to invite imagination, silliness, and connection back in.

Parent or not, I challenge you: make room for play. Let yourself be silly. Because the truth is, play isn’t just for kids, it was always for all of us.
