WEST FARGO

The more I get to know West Fargo, the more impressive it is.

It's fast-growing, familyoriented, full of new developments, and familiar faces. But spend a little time here and you realize West Fargo isn’t just expanding, it’s defining itself in real time.

You see it in the schools, which have had to evolve

quickly to keep pace with population growth, yet still manage to feel grounded in community. You see it in the parks and youth sports complexes, constantly busy, constantly improving. You see it in the mix of longtime residents and new arrivals.

West Fargo doesn't forget its roots, but it also doesn't lean on nostalgia the way some communities do. It’s not trying to preserve a past

version of itself. It’s focused on what comes next. New neighborhoods rise where farmland once stretched. Small businesses open with an eye toward the future.

And yet, despite all that growth, it hasn’t lost its sense of closeness.

That’s the balance West Fargo seems to get right. It’s big enough to feel like

opportunity, but small enough to still feel personal. You run into people you know. Coaches remember kids’ names. Business owners recognize repeat customers. There’s a shared understanding that while the city is growing, the culture doesn’t have to drift.

West Fargo is also deeply practical. There’s a strong work ethic here. There's less flash, more follow-through. People show up, put in the effort, and take pride in steady progress. It’s not about being the loudest or the trendiest. It’s about being

reliable, consistent, and forward-moving.

In many ways, West Fargo represents a broader shift happening across the region. It’s a place where people are choosing to stay, return, or relocate because they see real opportunity. Affordable living, strong schools, a sense of safety, and a community that’s still shaping its identity.

Birth Trauma

For many families, birth is a beautiful, emotional milestone. But it’s also one of the most physically intense events a human body will ever go through, especially for a newborn.

During the birth process, a baby’s head and neck are subjected to significant pressure, twisting, and pulling forces. Whether it’s a long labor, a fast delivery, or the use of interventions, that stress can impact the most delicate and important system in the body: the nervous system.

And here’s what most parents aren’t told… those early stresses don’t always just “go away.”

When Birth Is More Than a Moment

A baby’s spine protects the spinal cord, which controls how their body grows, develops, and adapts to the world. If that system is irritated or under stress early on, it can affect how well the body functions from the very beginning.

For some babies, that can show up as difficulty turning their head, favoring one side, trouble latching, excessive fussiness, or disrupted sleep. As they grow, it may look like sensory challenges, tension, delayed milestones, or difficulty settling.

Many parents are told these things are normal—or that their child will simply grow out of them. Sometimes they do. But often, those early patterns are signs that the nervous system is working harder than it should.

Why It’s Not Just About the Muscles

Birth stress isn’t just about tight muscles or a sore neck. It’s about how the brain and body are communicating.

If the upper neck and spine are restricted, the nervous system can stay in a subtle state of stress. That can affect sleep, digestion, immune function, and a child’s ability to relax and regulate. Even in babies who seem “healthy,” the body may be compensating in ways that aren’t obvious yet.

Parents often sense it before they can explain it. Something just feels off.

Tummy time, movement, and good positioning can all support healthy development. But if the underlying issue is nervous system stress, those strategies may only go so far.

That’s why getting your child checked matters.

Why Getting Checked Early Changes

Everything

At Strive Chiropractic, we look at more than milestones—we look at how your child’s nervous system is functioning.

Our evaluations are gentle, specific, and designed for infants and children. We assess spinal alignment, mobility, and patterns of tension that may be affecting how your child is adapting to the world. Using objective tools, we

can identify areas of stress in the nervous system and understand what may be contributing to your child’s challenges.

Many parents are surprised to learn that their baby’s difficulties aren’t random. They’re connected to how the body is functioning after birth.

When the Nervous System Settles, Kids Thrive

When stress is reduced and the nervous system can regulate, parents often notice their child becomes more at ease. Feeding improves. Sleep deepens. Movement becomes more natural. Their child simply seems more comfortable in their own body.

Not because something was forced or fixed—but because the body was finally able to function the way it was designed to.

Don’t Wait to See If It “Goes Away

Birth is the beginning of your child’s story—but it can also be the beginning of patterns that last longer than they should.

If something feels off, trust that instinct.

Get checked. Get answers. Give your child the best possible start.

Strive Chiropractic is here to support your child’s nervous system from day one—so they can grow, develop, and thrive the way they were created to.

Most people don’t choose to live with a “meh” yard. It just happens.

You move in. Life gets busy. The builder gave you a patch of sod and a couple of shrubs that looked decent for about 14 minutes. Then a few seasons go by, the plants do whatever they want, the lawn gets thin, the patio starts to shift… and suddenly your outdoor space becomes something you walk past instead of something you use.

Here’s the good news, the fixes are usually obvious once you know what to look for, and you don’t have to jump straight to a full yard overhaul to make a big difference.

You’ll see a commonly-cited guideline floating around that suggests homeowners often plan around 10–20% of their home’s value for landscaping and outdoor living improvements, depending on goals and market expectations. If you invest correctly, that 1020% can make a huge difference for the home's value!

You know this yard.

Wide-open grass. No focal points. No defined beds. Maybe one lonely shrub near the foundation. It’s tidy, but it feels unfinished.

• No clear purpose (Where do people sit? Gather? Grill?)

• No focal point (No entry bed, feature plant, lighting, rhythm)

• No intentional design

The Fix

Intentional design changes everything.

Precision starts with experienced designers, free estimates, and 2D/3D plans so you can see the end result before work begins.

That means:

• Defined bed lines that finish the home

• Focal points at entries and corners

• Usable space—patios, paths, gathering areas, privacy, shade

SIGN #2: Your Plants and Rock Beds Look Tired

This is the one people ignore.

Overgrown or declining plants slowly age your home. Shrubs planted too large for their space get hacked back until they turn into woody blobs. Many common shrubs have a 10–15 year lifespan before they get scraggly, crowded, or hard to reshape.

Red flags:

• Shrubs covering windows

• Walkways blocked

• Plants outgrowing their footprint

Low-maintenance landscaping starts with choosing plants that fit at mature size—not fighting them forever.

Perennials Acting Up

They either:

• Disappear and leave bare spots

• Take over everything

If you’re seeing empty patches, overcrowding, or “volunteer” spreaders popping up everywhere, it’s time to reset.

Rock Beds in Decline

Rock beds should look crisp. When they don’t, they read as neglect.

Watch for:

• More dirt than rock

• Weeds taking over

• Volunteer trees near the foundation

• Faded, discolored rock

The Fix

Usually a mix of:

• Strategic removals

• Shrub rejuvenation pruning (cutting shrubs back to about 6"–1' from the ground to stimulate healthy regrowth)

• Mature-size redesign

• Edging and bed definition

• Rock refresh or replacement

This is bread-and-butter work for Precision, and one of the fastest ways to make a property look new again without rebuilding the whole yard.

We also offer spring and fall yard cleanups, leaf removal, and full-yard pruning to keep landscapes looking sharp year-round.

SIGN #3: Your Lawn Is Struggling

A lawn doesn’t need to be perfect. But when it’s thin, patchy, and weedy, it drags the whole property down.

Common signs:

• Hard soil underfoot (compaction)

• Excessive thatch

• Yellowing grass

• Bare patches

• Weeds overtaking turf

And yes—weed problems spread. You notice. Your neighbors notice.

The Fix

It’s not magic. It’s process:

• Aeration

• Dethatching

• Overseeding or hydroseeding

Practical weed control plan

Precision offers lawn restoration, aeration, dethatching, overseeding, hydroseeding, weed control, and free lawn assessments so you’re not guessing.

They’re also offering bee lawn hydroseed for homeowners who want a pollinator-friendly option without giving up usability.

And if resale is on your radar, Realtors consistently recommend lawn and landscape improvements for curb appeal.

SIGN #4: Your Patio Is Failing

If guests subtly adjust their chairs so they don’t wobble, it’s time.

• Cracks

• Settling

• Heaving

• Water pooling

• Slope toward the foundation

Pavers shift. Concrete cracks. Drainage fails.

Older patios can be tricky, too. Matching legacy materials isn’t always easy, and sometimes rebuilding costs less than patching.

The Fix

• Resetting pavers

• Rebuilding base and correcting grade

• Replacing failing sections

• Fire pits

• Seat walls

• Outdoor kitchens

• Lighting

Precision coordinates slab pours, builds custom patios, and resets pavers when it makes sense.

And for homeowners who want it to feel finished? They also carry O.W. Lee outdoor furniture—for the “backyard that feels like a resort” crowd.

A fence isn’t just a border. It’s what makes a backyard feel like yours.

Signs it’s done:

• Warped boards

• Rot

• Leaning posts

• Missing sections

Or maybe you simply need:

• Privacy

• Pet containment

• A safe space for kids

Popular Options

• White vinyl

• Cedar

• Aluminum

Pergolas, trellises, and outdoor structures add:

• Shade

• Height and dimension

• A more intentional feel

Even simple A/C unit screens can instantly clean up an exterior.

Precision handles repairs, full installations, decks, pergolas, trellises, & privacy structures—everything that makes a yard feel finished and usable.

With decades of manufacturing expertise and a focus on quality materials, Latham delivers pools that are built to last while transforming backyards into resort-style retreats. Their extensive design options also allow homeowners to create a custom pool experience tailored to their space and lifestyle.

THE BACKYARD THAT STARTED IT ALL

The story begins in 1976 with a backyard project.

Steve Olson’s father wasn’t originally in the pool business. At the time, he worked in banking. It was stable work, but it kept him inside most of the day.

What he really enjoyed was being outdoors.

So when the Olson family decided to install a pool at their home, something unexpected happened. After the construction crew finished for the day, Steve’s father would head outside and keep working on the project himself.

He loved the process. He loved learning how everything worked.

“He liked being outside and working with his hands,” Steve said. “He enjoyed it so much that he decided to leave banking and start the pool business.”

PROTEAM CHEMICALS (BORATES)

When it comes to maintaining crystalclear pool and spa water, ProTeam’s borate-based water care products offer a simple yet highly effective solution. Adding borates helps stabilize pH levels, reduce algae growth, and create softer, more comfortable water. The result is water that not only looks better but also requires less chemical adjustment and maintenance over time. ProTeam has built a strong reputation among pool professionals and homeowners alike for its sciencebacked formulas that make water care easier, more efficient, and more enjoyable.

That decision became Olson Pools & Spas.

In the early days, the company was modest. Steve’s father farmed about 200 acres on the side while building the business, helping customers install and maintain pools throughout the region.

But the foundation was set to help people enjoy their backyard.

GROWING UP AROUND THE BUSINESS

For Steve Olson, the business wasn’t something he discovered later in life.

It was something he grew up in.

As a kid, summers often meant heading to job sites with his father.

“My mom would drop me off for a couple of hours at a time,” Steve said.

He was young, around ten years old, and admits he probably spent more

time getting in the way than actually helping. He liked being outside. He liked working with people. And he liked that every project was different. It never felt repetitive.

CHOOSING THE FAMILY PATH

By the time Steve graduated from high school in 1983, he already had a sense of where his future might lead.

His father asked him a simple question.

'What do you want to do?'

“I told him I’d love to take it over someday,” he said.

Before stepping into the business full time, Steve went to college and earned a four-year degree in business administration and management. After graduating in 1987, he returned home and began working alongside his father.

PARTNER CONTENT

The transition into ownership happened gradually.

For several years, Steve took on more responsibilities while his father slowly stepped back. His father continued helping with the books and other operations, offering guidance while the next generation learned the ropes.

By the time Steve reached his late twenties, the business was largely in his hands.

Olson Pools & Spas had officially become a second-generation company.

A BUSINESS THAT GREW WITH THE INDUSTRY

The late 1980s marked a turning point for the company.

In 1987, Olson Pools & Spas built the store it still operates from today. The

location allowed the business to expand beyond installations and offer more products directly to customers.

Pools remained the centerpiece.

But the industry was evolving. Spas began gaining popularity. New equipment improved water care systems. Accessories and backyard features started becoming part of the experience.

“When we first started selling them, they didn’t come assembled like they do today,” Steve said. “They would send us the shell and we’d basically put them together ourselves.”

Today’s models arrive fully engineered with advanced components and energyefficient systems.

But one thing hasn’t changed.

If Olson Pools sells something, they service it.

DOING THINGS THE RIGHT WAY

After five decades, Steve Olson believes the formula for longevity is actually pretty simple.

Treat people well.

Be honest.

And do the work the right way.

“If you don’t know something, find the answer,” he said. “Then do it right the first time.”

That philosophy has carried Olson Pools & Spas through generations of customers, evolving technology, and changing backyard trends.

And if the past 50 years are any indication, it’s a philosophy that will continue shaping backyards across the region for years to come.

West Fargo isn’t just growing, it’s evolving. What was once a quiet edge of the metro has become one of North Dakota’s most dynamic communities, where new neighborhoods rise alongside long-standing local businesses, and a strong sense of connection still anchors it all. This magazine is a snapshot of that momentum that looks at the people building it, the places shaping it, and, overall, what makes West Fargo so amazing!

Is Building More Than Adventure Vans in West Fargo

Vanna built an initial mobile wellness van, then connected with healthcare partners looking for similar units. As the team researched the space, they realized the mobile clinic market was growing rapidly and that there were relatively few builders in the country focused on doing it well, especially in van form.

What they saw was an opportunity.

A mobile clinic, Gleason explained, is not an ambulance and not a transport vehicle. It’s closer to a doctor’s office on wheels. It's a compact, functional medical space where staff can meet with patients, take vitals, draw blood, store supplies, and provide care in places where access is limited or inconsistent. That need is especially real in rural communities, and Vanna saw room to build something better.

“We realized we could build mobile clinics that were way better quality because we’re using the best quality systems and components on the market,” Gleason said. “And secondly, we could build ones that look a lot nicer for the same price or less.”

That insight eventually led to a separate sister brand, Vanna Mobile Medical, which launched about a year ago with its own website, branding, and marketing presence.

Now, customers are finding the company from across the country.

Last year alone, Vanna shipped mobile clinics to states including Hawaii, Washington, California, New Mexico, Florida, and South Carolina. Gleason said most of those clients are not local. They’re discovering the company online and choosing to work with a team based in West Fargo.

That national reach is one of the most impressive parts of the

grid water and power systems, and layouts that maximize storage without sacrificing comfort.

On the medical side, Vanna builds everything from van-based mobile exam units to larger medical vehicles on heavier chassis. Inside one unit for the Medical University of South Carolina, for example, there’s a waiting area, a bathroom, workspace, refrigeration for pharmaceuticals, and an exam room.

Every vehicle is custom, but the company’s process has become increasingly disciplined. Gleason said one of the most important changes in Vanna’s evolution has been breaking production into a standardized eight-stage manufacturing sequence. No matter the vehicle, the order of operations stays largely the same: early chassis and mechanical prep, followed by insulation, flooring, walls, cabinetry, and final electrical and finish work.

That structure has helped Vanna scale.

It also reflects lessons the founders learned the hard way.

If Gleason could go back, he said, one of the biggest things he would change is how quickly the company tried to grow.

“If we did it again, we would be more intentional about pacing growth and focus on more standardization and streamlined processes earlier. Basically, would have stayed smaller longer.”

In the beginning, The research and design was very expensive and also offered radical customization without much standardization. The team was figuring out power systems, water systems, materials, layouts, and manufacturing methods. That kind of exploration is exciting, but it also gets expensive. Without enough standardization, every new sale adds complexity instead of efficiency.

Looking back, Gleason said the company would have benefited from spending more time standardizing products and streamlining processes before pushing harder on growth.

“At the same time, we’ve built an incredible team and invested heavily in research and design to create what we believe are some of the best camper vans and mobile clinics on the market. That foundation puts us in a very strong position."

What has helped them get to this point is the team and culture.

“We couldn’t have done this without the incredible people on the Vanna team that have helped us build this."

Inside Vanna, culture is not treated like a side issue or a buzzword. Gleason sees it as central to the business. When hiring, the company looks not only at skill, but at attitude and character. They want to know if someone is teachable, solution-oriented, and likely to contribute positively to the environment around them.

“Skill set, as long as they have a baseline, can be trained,” he said. “A teachable attitude is harder to find.”

Retention, he added, comes down to more than wages or perks. It comes from leadership, respect, and giving people something meaningful to buy into. Vanna’s team is trying to build high-quality products, yes, but also a workplace where people can actually thrive while doing the work.

Walk through Vanna’s facility and you’ll see a wood shop, cabinetry production, material prep, assembly areas, sub-

assembly stations for power and water systems, and vehicles in different stages of completion. The space reflects a company that has matured dramatically from its early days in a much smaller Moorhead shop. However, you still see people smiling.

West Fargo has no shortage of businesses that serve the region well. What makes Vanna different is that its footprint extends far beyond the metro. From this facility, teams are building vehicles that end up in driveways, campgrounds, hospitals, universities, and rural communities across the country.

And if Gleason is right, it’s still early.

“Vanna as a whole is just getting started,” he said.

We can't wait to see where they go.

Building Power

DIFFERENTLY I

This image shows a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a newly developed platform built around a novel architecture and proprietary energy management AI. The system integrates advanced battery storage with intelligent control software designed to significantly reduce commercial electricity demand charges, often by as much as 75%. By analyzing facility load patterns and utility rate structures in real time, the AI combines multiple optimization algorithms and operational history to determine the most cost-effective moments to store or discharge energy. During peak demand periods, the system supplies stored power to offset grid consumption, helping facilities avoid expensive demand spikes. In many installations, this approach can reduce monthly electrical costs by thousands of dollars while improving overall energy efficiency and resilience.

BWR Innovations is Pushing to Rethink Energy From West Fargo

Most people do not spend much time thinking about electricity until it goes out. Then it becomes the only thing that matters.

The lights. The internet. The heat. The backup systems. The refrigerator. The pumps. The equipment that keeps a business open or a home livable. They all need power

From its West Fargo headquarters, BWR Innovations is working on energy systems built around hydrogen fuel cells, battery storage, microgrids, software controls, and modular power architecture. Public-facing company materials describe that work as spanning fuelcell power, product development, and energy systems integration.

But inside the building, the idea is a lot easier to understand than the terminology might suggest.

“If you have energy problems, electrical problems, we can help,” Co-Founder Adam Jorgensen said.

For many people, a generator means noise, fumes, heat, and the smell of diesel hanging in the air.

BWR’s solutions are different.

Inside the company’s demonstration space, Jorgensen walked through a hydrogen fuelcell system that produces electricity in a way that still sounds slightly futuristic even when you are standing right next to it. The system uses atmospheric air and hydrogen fuel. From there, through the chemistry and mechanics of the fuel-cell stack, it creates electricity.

Adam Jorgenson

The byproducts are heat, water vapor, and electricity.

A conventional engine produces a long list of exhaust byproducts. A hydrogen fuel-cell system, by comparison, can run clean enough that BWR demonstrates it indoors with ventilation designed for hydrogen safety.

There is no diesel smell. No thick exhaust cloud. No sense that a machine is fighting itself just to stay running. Yes, BWR is working to build power systems that are cleaner, quieter, and more adaptable than the equipment people are used to.

The Case for Modular Power

One of the biggest ideas behind BWR’s approach is modularity.

Instead of treating power generation like a fixed box with fixed limits, the company is designing systems that can scale.

A single module can provide a relatively small amount of power. Multiple modules can be combined to create larger systems. A home has different needs than a hotel. A remote military site has different needs than a retail store. A trucking application has different needs than a backup power system.

Traditional equipment often forces customers into rigid decisions. Buy one generator, and that is the capacity you get. If your needs grow, you may have to replace the entire thing. BWR’s system architecture is meant to avoid that dead end.

BWR’s systems are also designed to be demand-driven. If a space needs a certain amount of electricity, the system responds to that need rather than just pushing out full output all the time. That kind of responsiveness is part of what makes the company’s technology attractive not only for backup power, but for broader energy management.

It is also where software becomes just as important as hardware, and BWR does both for the majority of their products.

next page >

This image shows BWR's modular residential energy system, designed with flexibility and scalability in mind. The platform allows homeowners to configure various components, including fuel cell modules, integrated fuel storage, and interconnected energy units. Its modular architecture enables tailoring the system to a wide range of residential energy needs, whether for backup power, greater energy independence, or integration with other distributed energy resources. The design also allows the system to expand or adapt over time as household energy demands change or new technologies become available. In addition to residential installations, this system is also deployed in mobile applications that provide dispatchable power with virtually no noise or air pollution. By housing the power generation equipment within a secured enclosure, the system keeps generators out of sight while reducing the risk of theft.

From

Power Generation to Full Energy Ecosystems

The fuel-cell generator is only one part of the picture.

Jorgensen described a broader vision where hydrogen generation, battery storage, solar input, inverters, and control systems all work together to build an energy ecosystem.

During the day, solar can help power a site directly. Excess energy can be used to produce hydrogen. That hydrogen can then be stored and used later to generate electricity when solar is no longer available.

That capability becomes especially powerful in places where the grid is weak, fuel is expensive, or reliability matters more than almost anything else.

It also helps explain why BWR’s work has drawn attention in sectors like defense, remote infrastructure,

industrial power, and large commercial applications where failure is not a minor inconvenience.

If a site depends on imported diesel, it depends on supply chains. It depends on transportation. It depends on a system that can be interrupted by cost, weather, bureaucracy, or conflict. If that same site can generate hydrogen from available energy inputs and store it for later use, the equation changes. You are no longer just receiving power. You are producing and controlling more of it yourself.

The California Problem

If the remote-power case is one side of BWR’s business, the demandcharge case is the other.

Jorgensen lit up when he started talking about California. He described a utility environment where businesses are not only paying for the electricity they use, but also getting hit with steep demand charges based on peak usage. For some commercial customers, that means the monthly bill is not

just about how much power they consumed overall. It is about how high the spike got.

A single peak can drive huge added costs.

That is the kind of problem BWR wants to attack with battery energy storage and control software (BESS). The company’s BESS offering— battery energy storage tied to software and inverter architecture—is meant to monitor energy behavior, predict usage patterns, and shave peaks before they become

expensive. Instead of forcing a customer to radically change operations, the system is intended to work in the background, making the electrical profile less punishing. And the system can be financed or offered through an energy-as-aservice model, the adoption barrier gets lower.

A Startup Mentality with Industrial Ambitions

For all the scale of the ideas, BWR remains a relatively lean team.

Jorgensen described a group of roughly a dozen people, some full-time and some part-time, spanning programming, mechanical engineering, fabrication, software, and business operations. It is not a giant company. It is a specialized

This image shows BWR's large-scale energy system, which incorporates the same modular design principles used in our residential platform. The system is designed to scale for commercial or industrial applications while maintaining the flexibility to integrate multiple energy technologies. In this installation, the power-producing system is part of a broader energy solution that captures solar power during the day and prioritizes its use for on-site electrical demand. When solar generation exceeds immediate needs, the excess energy is converted into hydrogen for later use. This approach enables the facility to store renewable energy in a versatile form that can be dispatched when required. By integrating solar generation, hydrogen production, and modular power systems, the installation helps reduce overall energy costs, decrease reliance on grid electricity and traditional generators, and lower ongoing logistics and maintenance requirements.

one. That may be part of its strength.

The team sounds less like a traditional corporate hierarchy and more like a startup that has kept its appetite for experimentation while moving into larger and larger projects.

That culture comes through in the details. 3D-printed parts used during development. Prototype mounts revised over multiple iterations. Engineers and fabricators

Built By a Fatherand-Son Team

BWR was founded by Adam Jorgensen and his father, Joel Jorgensen. Public-facing company history and related coverage tie the business to earlier work in temperature monitoring, telemetry, and hydrogen-based systems.

Joel’s background is in electrical engineering, including founding and exiting Packet Digital. Adam’s is in software.

That pairing makes sense once you hear how they talk about the business. BWR is not purely a hardware company, and it is not purely a software company either. It lives in the overlap. The physical system has to work. The controls have to work. The interface has to work. The deployment has to make sense.

Adam also grew up around technology. He talked about being around Packet Digital, the company Joel founded, and later working on projects that connected industrial equipment to phones and remote monitoring systems. The company’s earlier temperaturemonitoring work also created a proving ground for building marketable products before BWR expanded further into energy systems.

working side by side to turn an idea into hardware. A team willing to put in the hours because they genuinely think the work is interesting.

Why West Fargo Works

BWR moved into its current West Fargo facility in late 2024, according to Jorgensen, after outgrowing its previous space.

The company needed more room both in office space and shop space to work on largescale projects, including a 40foot containerized system that demanded a different kind of footprint.

But the move also seems to fit the company culturally.

Jorgensen spoke positively about being in an industrial environment where growth, fabrication, shipping, and large equipment feel normal rather than out of place.

The Bigger Vision

For Jorgensen, the long-term vision reaches beyond any single box, battery, or generator. He talked about North Dakota as a potential energy hub.

A place where abundant wind and solar resources, paired with hydrogen production and storage, could create new kinds of economic opportunity, positioning North Dakota as the clear leader in a new era of American energy and industry.

From downtown West Fargo, one healthcare staffing company is helping small-town hospitals find the people they need to keep their doors open.

At a glance, it might not look like the kind of business with reach across dozens of states.

But from downtown West Fargo, one locally rooted healthcare staffing company is doing work that extends far beyond the metro while filling critically needed positions by connecting rural hospitals, clinics, and care facilities with the nurses, physicians, therapists, and specialists they need to keep serving their communities.

For its founder, Briah Rahman, that mission has been a long time in the making.

Long before he launched the business, Rahman had already spent decades inside healthcare administration, working in hospitals and health systems and seeing the same problem play out again and again. Rural providers needed help, and too often, they did not have enough people to deliver care consistently.

“I saw firsthand these small hospitals needed nurses,” he said. “They needed radiology techs. They needed doctors to come to the emergency room.”

That idea stayed with him for years.

After roughly three decades in healthcare leadership, he finally acted on it, starting the company about 10 years ago. It began modestly from home the way many small businesses do.

He and his wife, Jessica Rahman, started the company out of their house, moved into a small office in south Fargo, and eventually relocated to West Fargo, where the business has continued to grow.

“The reason we came out here is just a quaint little area,” he said. “Quiet. And that’s what I liked about it.”

Today, the company has offices in West Fargo, Sioux Falls, and Omaha. Its footprint is still centered in the Midwest, but its reach has expanded significantly. The company now operates in roughly 35 states, has around 30 internal employees, and works with hundreds of travelers and temporary healthcare professionals in the field.

Those placements can include travel nurses, radiology techs, therapists, and physicians serving in temporary or fill-in roles.

For many hospitals, especially in rural areas, that kind of staffing support is essential.

Sometimes the need is short-term and predictable. Due to maternity leave, an illness, or a contract gap. Other times, it is much more difficult and urgent, like when a hospital cannot recruit a permanent physician, a department is stretched thin, or a community is one staffing shortage away from reduced services.

That is where this company steps in.

“Our goal is to keep rural hospitals viable,” Rahman said. “Keep their doors open. The small town facilities need the help instead of the big boys,.

The company’s work spans a range of healthcare roles, but some of the most common placements are in nursing, therapy, and physician coverage. Travel nurse contracts often run about 13 weeks, though many are renewed. Therapy has become a particularly strong sector for the business, as have physician placements and allied health roles.

That “allied” category includes a broad range of non-nurse, non-physician positions—lab professionals, radiology staff, ultrasound techs, and more.

The same goes for physician coverage, especially in emergency departments and other hard-to-staff areas. Temporary physician support, often referred to as locum tenens, can help a facility bridge recruitment gaps, manage leave coverage, or maintain services during periods of transition.

Co-Founders

Brian and Jessica Rahman

When Rahman talks to hospital leaders, he understands what they are dealing with because he has been there himself. He knows what it is like to need coverage fast, to search for a physician in a hard-to-recruit market, or to try to hold a rural operation together when staffing options are limited.

For him, recruiting is not just a business function. It is a challenge he genuinely enjoys.

“I love the challenge of recruiting,” Rahman said. “It’s like putting a puzzle together.”

Embracing West Fargo

getting the right traveler, therapist, or physician at the right time is not just a staffing win. It can be the difference between stability and disruption.

The company sees itself as part of the downtown business community and has embraced that role. The founder described a business that supports nearby shops, participates in local events, and makes an effort to be visible and engaged in the neighborhood.

“We want to be part of the community,” Rahman said.

That support goes both ways. He talks easily about neighboring businesses, community events, and the kind of familiarity that only comes from being woven into a district instead of simply occupying space in it.

Rahman could have stayed in large-system leadership. Instead, he built something smaller, more entrepreneurial, and more directly connected to the places he felt needed help the most.

He wanted to fulfill a long-held vision. He wanted to keep solving the recruiting puzzle. And he wanted to support the kinds of communities that too often get overlooked.

From downtown West Fargo, that is exactly what he is still trying to do.

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR: EMMET AND MARGO | provided by Emmet's Creations

EMMET'S CREATIONS

EMMET, 7 AND MARGO, 5

For the Davis family, entrepreneurship is part of school.

Parents Nick and Miranda were introduced to learner-driven education through enrolling their son Emmet at Odyssey FM, a Moorhead private school built on the Acton Academy model, which emphasizes independence, projects, and real-world skill-building. From there, they leaned further in after going the homeschooling route to give them more reps in it.

That’s where Emmet’s Creations comes in, and it's a full team effort with mom, dad, Emmet, and his sister Margo all working together. The business revolves around hands-on 3D wooden build kits. They offer flowers, moving models, and mechanical-style projects that they sell at vendor shows and events. The family unpacks inventory, builds sample displays, sets up a six-foot table booth, assigns roles, and then reviews what worked and what didn’t after each event.

A key piece of the story is the give-back element. The family is partnering with Garden of Healing, a Fargo nonprofit creating a reflection-andremembrance space near SCHEELS Arena.

Q: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD ONE OF THE BIG PROJECTS?

Dad: A big project takes 8-14 hours. Most projects take 1-3 hours.

Q: SO YOU’RE NOT JUST SHOWING UP AND SELLING. THERE’S A WHOLE PROCESS BEHIND IT.

Dad: Exactly. When inventory comes in, we rent a room, take everything out, organize it, build out inventory, and set up displays.

Q: WHY ARE THE DISPLAYS SUCH A BIG DEAL?

Dad: People need to see what it becomes. The kits come flat in a box, and you pop out the pieces and build it into something like the flowers or the bigger mechanical builds. When they see the finished result, it clicks.

Q: YOU SAID THIS STARTED FROM HOMESCHOOLING. HOW?

Dad: Last year, we were at Odyssey FM, their first year in the Fargo-Moorhead community, and they had an entrepreneurship unit. We loved that

model. Eventually, we chose homeschooling to have more control over what the kids learn, introducing concepts earlier, and teaching entrepreneurship as a real-life skill. We want them to learn the process, and yes, we want them to fail sometimes. That’s where learning happens.

Q: HOW DO YOU DIVIDE ROLES AS A FAMILY AT EVENTS?

Dad: Emmet and I are more on the sales side. Margo and Miranda help with customer service.

Q: EMMET, WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER FROM YOUR ENTREPRENEURSHIP EXPERIENCE. WHAT DID YOU START WITH?

Emmet: First, I started with beads. Then I moved on.

Q: HOW DID YOU CREATE YOUR LOGO?

Emmet: We had to make a logo first. Odyssey’s mascot is an owl, so we used an owl in the design.

Q: WHAT WERE YOU SELLING EARLY ON?

Emmet: At first, it was iron-on beads, like Perler beads, fused together with an iron. I sold ornaments at kids’ business fairs.

Q: HOW DID YOU DEVELOP THE BRANDING?

Dad: We used Canva, built basic branding guidelines, and picked colors. He chose red, white, and blue as his main colors.

Q: WHAT KINDS OF 3D PUZZLES DO YOU SELL?

Emmet: Flowers, fair rides, pinball machines, there are over 130 options.

Freddy's Lefse and Nordic Kitchen

If you're from the area, you know Freddy's Lefse, and for good reason. The Nordic bakery specializes in hand-made, hand-rolled lefse—a traditional Norwegian and Midwestern delicacy. In operation since 1946, the business rolled out a new line of hand-mixed Scandinavian organic baking mixes in the past few years, including Norwegian pancakes, Danish shortbread cookies, and golden cake mixes. While this is a local business, they do ship all over the US, to all 50 states. But, you can save some shipping coin and head to a variety of local shops like Hornbacher's, Family Fare, Cash Wise, Prime Cut Meats, John and Wayne Meats, and more locations all over the Midwest and beyond (check their website for a full list). Did you know, Freddy's is the oldest and largest lefse bakery in the US? How cool is that!

Sonder Bakehouse

Loved for its macarons, custom cookies, take-and-bake rolls, beautifully (and tasty) cake creations, and, of course, the "Good Stuff," Sonder Bakehouse has become a staple in the West Fargo community. Owner, Kayla, also has a passion for international organization, charity:water—which she is hosting the second annual gala for this May! Hands down, the best thing you can grab inside the bakery on any given day—the Good Stuff, which is a cup with all the "good stuff" leftover from her baking, some of her creations being strawberries n' cream (vanilla cake, fresh strawberries, strawberry puree, pastry cream, and strawberries swiss meringue) a vanilla-berry mix (vanilla bean cake, triple berry pureed compote, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, berry swiss meringue, buttercream, and topped with strawberry cream cheese), banana cream (banana cake, cinnamon crumbles, cream cheese frosting, and pastry cream), and many more.

You may not think BBQ when you think North Dakota, but you could be surprised at the award-winning dishes at Spitfire Bar & Grill. The highly anticipated expansion of Junkyard Brewing into West Fargo introduced the West Fargo community to the brewery, as much as it introduced the brewery's fans to the developing and dynamic downtown of West Fargo. The taproom is a transformed 1979 building that previously housed banks like Bell Bank, and the new space merges retro-modern aesthetics with the brewery's distinct personality. The renovation pays tribute to the original building's midcentury design, like the main bar that wraps around an old bank vault, now serving as the beer keg cooler. They've got an outdoor patio area (complete with rooftop seating), three bars (two on the main level immediately upon entry and another on the upper level), second-floor seating that overlooks a two-story central atrium, kombucha, Junkyard's classics and experimentals, complimentary popcorn, games, pop-up food and events, and much more!

Meet The

MAKER

Emily Groth

By Ashley Morken, Owner, Unglued

You got to meet Emily Groth in a “Meet the Maker” back in 2019 when she had a handmade business featuring macrame work as Studio 1318! This business has changed over the years under a new name, 16th Street Press, that you may have caught at our 16th Annual Unglued Craft Fest in March. We thought it’d be fun to find out her process of creating a new type of business and the inspo behind it—read on for more!

Tell us a bit about yourself again, 7 years later!!

Hello again! I’m Emily Groth—born and raised in Fargo, ND, and a proud MSUM (‘20) grad (Go Dragons!). I currently work in marketing, but creativity has always been a huge part of who I am.

I’m a Midwest person through and through—summers at the lake, and winters in the hockey rink watching my brothers play. Design has always been a passion of mine, and I’m constantly inspired by great branding, typography, and anything that tells a story visually.

Describe what type of products and work you do now at 16th Street Press?

I make felt pennants and banners inspired by vintage camp flags and sports memorabilia. Similar to my time creating macramé with Studio 1318, I’m still pulling from retro influences—just reimagining them with a more modern, graphic feel.

Tell us how you got started with changing the focus of your handcrafted business? What inspired you?

I’ve always loved trying new creative outlets, and over time, I found myself wanting something that felt a little more design-focused. I was really drawn to vintage pennants and the nostalgia behind them—the colors, the shapes, the storytelling.

That inspiration naturally turned into experimenting with felt, and after a lot of trial and error, 16th Street Press started to take shape.

What was one of the most difficult pieces you've created so far as 16th Street Press?

The framed banners mounted on fabric mat board have definitely been the most challenging. They require a high level of precision—not just in the felt cuts, but in the assembly and layout as well.

With those pieces, the smallest details make the biggest difference, so there’s not much room for error.

Favorite piece?

Definitely the piece I call the “double Nordic flower banner” (because what else would I name it?).

It’s one of my favorites because it’s so versatile—it works in just about any space. You can hang it vertically or horizontally, add it to a gallery wall, or use it to fill that awkward, narrow wall that’s always hard to decorate.

What are some lessons you learned that you are taking with you from Studio 1318 now with 16th Street Press?

Patience, above all else. Good things take time and usually a lot more work than you expect.

I also learned how important it is to keep things fun, try new ideas, and stay open to inspiration. That’s what keeps the creative process exciting.

What has been the most challenging part of this new business?

Getting the product exactly where I wanted it took a lot of trial and error. And once I got there, the next challenge was figuring out how to produce everything more efficiently at a larger scale.

It’s also a much messier process than macramé, which brings a whole new set of challenges that require some creative problem-solving.

What has been the most rewarding part so far?

Being back at craft shows and connecting with people in person has been incredibly rewarding. There’s something really special about seeing people interact with your work and getting to share the story behind it.

It’s also been nice to have a creative outlet that feels both relaxing and fulfilling—and there’s nothing better than finishing a big project and seeing it all come together in a booth.

What advice would you have given yourself five years ago?

It’s okay to pivot. Try new things. Don’t feel like you have to stick to one path just because it’s working.

Staying creative and open to change is what keeps things exciting—and honestly, that’s when the best ideas tend to happen.

You were just a vendor at our 16th Annual Unglued Craft Fest and won our "Best in Show" booth award! Your booth was so cohesive and uniquely featured your brand and products. What advice would you give to someone new to creating a booth display for a market?

Thank you! My biggest piece of advice is to pull inspiration directly from your products or what originally inspired them. That naturally creates a more cohesive and intentional look.

Also, use the depth of your space to your advantage. Set up your booth so people have to step in and explore a bit—it creates curiosity and draws people in.

OUR FAVORITE LOCAL SHOPS AND MARKETS

As a craft beer enthusiast, it’s always a great day when I get to enjoy any of Junkyard’s beverages. Their rotating lineup is packed with bold, imaginative flavors. I am especially drawn to their rich, malty brews like Peanut Butter Bandit and Snow Scout. Many of their beers give a nod to Midwest life, from lake days to unpredictable weather, which makes each pour feel close to home.

Their West Fargo space is open and inviting, and as the weather warms up, the patio is one of the best spots in town for a date night or gathering with friends. Beyond great beer, Junkyard is deeply rooted in the community. From trivia nights to charity events, they regularly partner with other local businesses and nonprofits to give back. Junkyard is such an iconic staple in Moorhead and West Fargo at both of their locations.

COOKIE KRUMS

There is something special about walking into Cookie Krums. Katie, the owner, brings so much warmth and joy into her shop that you can feel her passion the moment you step inside. Her stuffed cookies are legendary. I can never resist the Blueberry Graham Cracker filled with Bavarian cream. Her custom frosted sugar cookies are edible works of art.

Katie hand decorates each design with incredible detail, making them perfect for birthdays, showers, and celebrations of all kinds. As a former teacher, she utilizes her background in education in her business by offering cookie decorating classes, both public and private. Her business combines creativity and community. Whether I am strolling down Sheyenne Street or visiting the Red River Market, I always make time to treat myself and say hello.

year-round, and during the warmer months, you will also find them bringing their crafts, treats, and fresh food to the Red River Market.

The West Fargo Red River Market returns on May 16 at the POW/MIA Plaza. This outdoor gathering space hosts community events throughout the year and serves as a tribute to veterans. After months of winter, the market is a great excuse to get outside, soak up some sunshine, and spend time with friends and family. The free, family-friendly event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Here are a few of our staff’s favorite West Fargo businesses that also vend at the Red River Market to check out.

FREDDY’S LEFSE AND NORDIC

KITCHEN

Growing up in the Midwest, lefse was always part of our holiday treat table, and I will admit I often ate 3+ rolls in one sitting. Freddy’s has been carrying on that tradition for decades. Every round of lefse is handmade and hand-rolled with care, preserving a cherished Scandinavian craft.

As the oldest and largest lefse producer in the United States, Freddy’s ships to seven states, yet remains proudly rooted in West Fargo with its own local bakery. What really stands out is their commitment to fostering community. They frequently support local causes by offering wholesale pricing for fundraisers and partnering with charitable organizations. Their business is built on heritage, generosity, and hometown pride.

THUNDER COFFEE HILDEBRANT FARM

My go to order at Thunder Coffee is a classic iced brown sugar vanilla latte. It is a frequent stop on my way to work, and their drive-through makes a quick stop very convenient. On weekends, their West Fargo location is one of my favorite places to slow down. The large windows fill the space with light, making it a perfect Saturday morning meeting spot.

Thunder roasts their beans locally in Fargo and is on a mission to bring people together over thoughtfully crafted coffee. They also offer a traveling coffee cart, bringing the café experience directly to weddings, corporate events, and parties throughout the region.

When it comes to everyday essentials, I love making environmentally conscious choices, and Honey B Soap makes that easy. Their handcrafted soaps are thoughtfully made with non-GMO ingredients and are parabenfree, phthalate-free, vegan, and preservative-free. The care they put into their slow curing process ensures a high-quality, long-lasting bar.

I always enjoy visiting their booth at the Red River Market to see their newest colorful designs and seasonal scents. They sometimes do fun collaborations like beer soaps made with local brews from Drekker Brewing Company. It is so fun seeing local businesses support one another. Honey B Soap blends artistry with sustainability, and I am especially fond of their Galaxy Soap that has planet designs and any soap that has a lavender scent.

Our team encourages you to visit these West Fargo businesses. When you shop small, you are not just making a purchase; you are supporting dreams and strengthening the West Fargo community. Each stop, whether at a brick-and-mortar storefront or a booth at the Red River Market, is a chance to meet the creatives and growers behind the products you love. Every visit helps support the local businesses that make West Fargo vibrant and full of character.
