It is recommended that you ensure you are getting enough sleep, eating regularly, and choosing options that fuel your body, limiting caffeine intake, and exercising.

However, there are additional ways to prevent and combat burnout. Evaluating what needs to be done, determining what can wait, and saying 'No' to tasks or invitations help manage our stressors. Sometimes we need to also take a look at the types of thoughts we are experiencing and identify ways to shift our language to reduce negative appraisal of tasks. For example, having a thought such as, 'I am never going to get this done in time,' can leave a person feeling defeated and decrease productivity. Replacing that thought with a new thought that decreases feelings of defeat or helplessness can shift our emotions and desire to engage in tasks."

"It's about a harmony between external validation and internal confidence. It’s knowing the distinction between confidence and arrogance. Confidence is inside and arrogance shows up outside.

It’s knowing how to be present on the court or the field so you don't get derailed by a bad play but also being able to see the big picture.

There’s something about focusing on the game you're in—including the individual plays inside that game—and being unattached enough to the outcome that it doesn't throw your world off if you lose. You can be committed to a certain outcome without being attached to there only being one certain way to get there. Lots of things happen in a game that are outside your personal control. A personal example for me is fouling.

If a ref calls a foul on me, I can either be really upset because I don’t agree with the call, which will take me out of the next few plays, or I can adjust the way I play to the way the game is being called.

I can be stubborn and attached or I can be smart and see the bigger picture. Understanding that bigger picture sooner than later is a gift on so many planes that will serve athletes who are still playing their games and those who bring their awareness to the next 'game' they play at work."

Every entrepreneur is different, as are their stories, stages, and needs, so my assistance and responses to them are never quite a cookiecutter template. However, here are some most common resources I often share with startups.

ABOUT ND SBDC

ILT Academy is a startup-focused education platform aimed at empowering entrepreneurs through practical training, mentorship, and community-building.

The North Dakota Small Business Development Center offers comprehensive support to entrepreneurs and small business owners throughout the state.

With a network of experienced advisors, it provides free, confidential guidance on starting, managing, and growing businesses. Services include help with business planning, financial forecasting, market research, loan preparation, and marketing strategies.

For those that are early stage, and sometimes still in the idea phase, I’d really suggest looking at the ILT Academy lean startup program. In a cohort model over 10 weekly evening sessions, ILT helps participants with the customer discovery process and validate the idea. The program has been available to Minnesota entrepreneurs for several years and was rolled out in North Dakota this past year.

As someone has worked on their idea a bit more, our local SBDCs (Small Business Development Centers) are probably the most common referrals I make for things like business planning, financial forecasting, market research, and more. Our regional North Dakota office is at the NDSU Research & Technology Park. The regional Minnesota office is on the campus of M-State. Many banks will send young businesses to the SBDC for guidance on projecting revenues, expenses, and cashflow that helps better assess the businesses’ funding needs and repayment capacity.

ABOUT SCORE SCORE is a nonprofit organization that offers free mentorship, workshops, and resources to help entrepreneurs and small business owners succeed.

In addition to ILT, SCORE is another good resource for both early and more seasoned entrepreneurs. This SBAsupported program has a local and national network of volunteers who can provide mentorship and advice as entrepreneurs work through their business planning. Plus, you can find additional templates, tools, and workshops on their website.

Emerging Prairie is a nonprofit organization based in Fargo, North Dakota, dedicated to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. It supports the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem by organizing various events and initiatives, including the popular StartupBREW Fargo.

The gener8tor accelerator and gBETA programs have been great additions to our region. These programs are more applicable to startups that have developed their product or MVP, are scalable, and will likely need future funding to scale. gBETA is a free 7-week program for early-stage companies, providing coaching, mentoring, meetups, pitch opportunities, and more. With the accelerator providing a $100k investment and concierge approach, a 12-week program for 5-6 high-growth startups per cohort.

There are many more resources for entrepreneurs, especially in funding programs, but it would take me much more space to dive into those. 3 5 U N D E R 3 5 WO M E N ’ S L E A D E R S H I P P RO G R A M The 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program, run

by United Way of Cass-Clay, is a program meant to “inspire local women from all backgrounds to make a difference, help them realize their leadership skills, and energize their collective power as women in our community.” The program brings together women from the community to network and build connections among others from all walks of life. Applications for 2024’s program will open this September.

A M E R I C A N A DV E RT I S I N G F E D E R AT I O N – N O RT H DA KOTA AAF-ND is an organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the wellness of American advertising.

Throughout each of their seasons, they bring in advertising experts from all over the country to educate and engage those in the ND advertising industry. The organization also provides networking opportunities—like holiday parties and happy hour events—to help those in the industry (or those interested in advertising, like students from our local universities) mingle and learn from each other.

The organization has three local networking groups.

THE EXECUTIVES’ CLUB OF FA RG O - M O O R H E A D The Executives’ Club of Fargo-Moorhead is a group “where business and community leaders share ideas, explore opportunities and engage in trusted inner-circle discussions.”

The organization is for key decision-makers of local businesses, like CEOs, Presidents, and Founders. Meetings help local executives connect with others that might have unique insight into leadership in the Fargo-Moorhead community.

With three chapters in Fargo that all meet on a weekly basis, Inspire provides the opportunity to regularly interact with other professionals in the community and gain valuable networking and relationshipbuilding skills.

Lotus Midwest, formerly known as Ladyboss Midwest, was “created to strengthen the presence and power of women in the business community across the Midwest.” Lotus aims to connect, uplift, and advance women professionally through events, newsletters, and articles. N O RT H DA KOTA WO M E N ’ S BUSINESS CENTER The North Dakota Women’s Business Center is an organization that provides invaluable support to women business owners in North Dakota. Their goal is to “[amplify] the economic voice of [their] clients through advocacy and access to critical resources.” One of their primary networking opportunities is the “Strong Women, Strong Connections” events, which each feature a panel of local women business leaders. They also offer additional business support to women like business coaching and funding opportunities.

WO M E N I N N E T WO R K I N G Women in Networking is a Fargo-Moorhead based networking group for women in the metro area. The group aims “to connect businesses for women by fostering mutual success in the areas of profitability, leadership, and personal/professional growth in a non-competitive arena.” Members of the group meet twice a month to connect with and learn from one another.

S TA RT U P B R E W StartupBREW, energized by Emerging Prairie, is a weekly event that allows local entrepreneurs to connect with one another as well as connecting with the larger community. Each event provides 20 minutes of networking time prior to the speakers (with free coffee!), as well as 20 minutes of Q&A time after the featured speakers have presented. The event takes place in downtown Fargo at Brewhalla each Wednesday from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
