STORY

BEHIND THE STORIES e were sitting in the playroom of the Children’s Hospital at Sanford waiting for Dr. Nathan Kobrinsky. As our photographer, Sanford Media Relations and myself waited for Dr. Kobrinsky, we talked about the banalities of life: the weather, how the Bison were going to do in the NCAA Tournament and so on. Then the room started to fill up. Kids began to walk in or be rolled in their wheelchairs to enjoy a little respite from the needles and hospital beds.

As we talked with the moms and nurses, Dr. Kobrinsky walked in. The children flocked to this man who had the aurora of a savior. As we photographed Dr. Kobrinsky and his little patient for the April Doctor’s issue of Fargo Monthly, we watched him make this little girl who was going through chemotherapy laugh and forget the horror she was facing.

The girl went back to her hospital bed and we retreated to a couple of chairs made for five-year-olds to talk about the reality of being a pediatric cancer physician. For the next hour, we talked about the joy of seeing children walk out of the hospital, the pain of losing a patient and the level of respect Kobrinsky shared for his patients.

he pulled up a poem he wrote about a patient he lost named Eleanor.

This intimate poem gave me a look at Kobrinsky. Not as the savior he’s seen as, but as the man he really is.

To my surprise, Kobrinsky gave me this poem with permission to run it in the April magazine.

This one story behind the story is just an example of what our journalists go through to put together this magazine. While we do our best to distance ourselves from the story, it’s impossible at times to not take an interest in these stories. That’s what I want you to think about as you take a trip down 2015 with us in this issue.

This man, who almost spent as much time in various colleges to become a doctor than I had throughout my whole life, didn’t talk about white blood cell levels or the latest in cancer research. Instead, he talked about time spent with his patient or the child who inspired him to become a doctor.

Burger, Bourbon and Beer Festival

This summer, Fargo Monthly hosted its second annual Burger Festival, but we did it even bigger this year by blocking off an entire city block and adding bourbon and beer samples, with a live performance by the Front Fenders.

Seven area restaurants were grilling up a storm for the hundreds of people who were there. Kudos to Drekker Brewing Company, DS Beverages and Republic Distributing for the beer and bourbon samples. It was a perfect day with a great turnout, and we hope to make the event even bigger and better next year.

espite my small frame, I really enjoy food. After starting out as a measly intern during the early days of the magazine, I have worked my way up to the editorial director position and I now oversee the production of Fargo Monthly, Bison Illustrated, Stride and Design & Living magazines. My love of food has been complemented by the fact that the restaurant scene, and, really, the entire arts and entertainment scene, is booming in FargoMoorhead. Cheesy Fried Pickles

Toasted Frog If you're a pickle fan like me, this appetizer from the Toasted Frog, a Downtown Fargo restaurant that opened in January, will send you to pickle heaven. And even if you're not a fan, don't knock it until you try it. Dill pickle spears are wrapped in Havarti cheese, deep-fried in a wonton-like wrapping and served with Sriracha-ranch dressing. So long, floppy pickle slices. My heart has been won over by another dill.

The Return of SURGE

February Boy, I sure do miss the '90s. When I heard that a local resident, Matt Winans, was at the forefront of a movement to bring back an iconic soda of my childhood, SURGE, I was excited to bring his story to life. Our photographer, J. Alan Paul photography, created this fun photo that has been floating all over the Internet and has even been seen

by Coca-Cola. Now that SURGE is actually back for good, I wish more '90s products could come back on the market (see: Oreoo's and 3D Doritos).

Tom Green

Fargo Theatre I had never been to a live comedy show before this past September, when the famous Tom Green did a performance at the Fargo Theatre. The performance was nothing short of a side-splitting good time.

His screaming, wild jokes, calling people out in the audience and crazy facial expressions left me in a fit of laughter for nearly two hours. And later on in the night, I spotted him downtown at the W端rst Bier Hall eating, you guessed it, sausages.

Junkyard Brewing Company

Two words: Sour beers.

I have never had tart and tasty beers like those at Junkyard Brewing Company.

I am talking sour brews infused with flavors such as blueberry, hibiscus and key lime. (Not all in one beer, of course.) Though it's off the beaten path in Moorhead, Junkyard is constantly calling my name. And with a tap list that changes often, there is always something new to try.

Best Burgers

With a headline like that, what’s not to love? This article featured the most bodacious burgers that FargoMoorhead has to offer. Just thinking of toppings such as pulled pork, a glazed donut or tater tots has my stomach stirring with hunger. I also had the honor of getting a little messy with condiments for the cover design.

Although I had been invited to the Addy’s in 2014, 2015 was the year where I was able to showcase designs that I have personally worked on for Spotlight Media. Our publications have been a learning experience for me, both professionally and creatively. We took home four silver Addy awards, three of which were for design. I am looking forward to next year's award ceremony to see if we can top this year's!

The Cure Burger and the Breakfast of National Champions

Herd & Horns If you are like me and think that breakfast is just fine any time of the day, then you'll want to give this combination a shot. The Cure is a large burger loaded with hashbrowns and a fried egg, and topped with bacon jelly.

It tastes like an amazing hearty breakfast.

This thing is fantastic by itself, however, if you want to complete the breakfast-anytime feel, wash it down with a drink called the Breakfast of National Champions. The drink contains Crown Royal Maple, orange juice and some simple syrup, and it's garnished with a stick of chipotle bacon. You'll swear that with each sip you had just finished a bite of pancakes with syrup and a glass of OJ. Together, this combination is like enjoying a nice breakfast without having to get up early.

The Risk Takers

August My favorite set of photos I've done for a story was in the August issue. The "Risk Takers" gave me an opportunity to do composite photography and put people in situations that they would normally never be in. I made someone throw knives around his business partners, someone tightrope walk across downtown, one sit on the edge of a building and another jetski with sharks on the Red River. I had a lot of fun with the editors coming up with the ideas and then photographing the subjects and backgrounds to make it all come together visually.

Roughrider Iron & Ink Expo

This year, the Iron & Ink Expo expanded and had a great turnout of people wanting to get tattooed up and see some custom-built motorcycles. As an avid rider myself, and someone who is trying to figure out what kind of tattoo to get, it was great walking around and admiring all the creations that those bike builders and tattoo artists came up with.

2. What You Learned About Fargo This Year I've learned that there is so much more in this city than I had previously thought.

I know that sounds generic, but every day I learn about a new company or business that has either been here or sprung up within the past few months.

The growth here is astounding.

3. Wishful Thinking for 2016 I'd like to see more expansion on the outskirts of downtown. I love Downtown Fargo, but it is getting a little crowded.

I'd like to see the "downtown" area expand a bit and start filtering several blocks in each direction.

4. Fargo New Year's Resolution I want to photograph landscapes of the city from every rooftop downtown.

The Decoy

Rustica Tavern I eat a lot of pizza, and when I say a lot, I mean A LOT (they don’t call me Pizza Paul for nothing). So when I heard about Rustica’s wood-fired pizzas, I knew it was something I must to look into. Each pizza from Rustica is unique and delicious, but one in particular, The Decoy, takes the cake. Topped with both duck confit and sweet roasted grapes, this pizza may seem a bit too exotic at first, but it’s definitely worth a shot. Trust me, you won’t be hunting for flavor.

Taylor Swift

On October 12, an angel landed in Fargo.

I arrived at the Fargodome that evening expecting to photograph Taylor Swift’s performance, but I didn’t expect to fall in love.

“Welcome to Fargo,” I thought to myself as I waited in the pit for Taylor to emerge. “It’s been waiting for you.” As the show started and I began shooting, I was suddenly struck with a feeling that I couldn’t shake off. I’ve lived my whole life with a blank space in my heart, but it wasn’t until we locked eyes that I knew I was meant for her. But alas, timing was not on our side. She finished her concert and moved on to the next city. Taylor, you’ll always be the reason for the teardrops on my camera.

A Walk on the Wild Side

I photograph many people for Spotlight Media's magazines, but sometimes it’s nice to shoot something other than humans. In September’s issue of Fargo Monthly, we went behind the scenes to find out what it takes to operate the Red River Zoo. After bonding with the otters and ducks, we stumbled across some peacocks roaming around like they owned the place (they basically did). The momma peacock and her babies were so relaxed around humans that I was able to get right up in their grill and snap a couple sweet pics.

Everest Tikka House Trying new foods is one of the chief joys of my existence, especially food that has a large range of flavors and spices from countries I've never been to. Indian food is my favorite. So naturally, I was excited to hear about the Everest Tikka House opening in Moorhead. Not only did it open the door to sampling Nepalese dishes, it also helped to facilitate my need for Indian food at a much closer range to where I live and work, near Downtown Fargo.

When you're there, try the Paneer Makhani.

If Fargo Bars Were Game Of Thrones Houses My favorite project that I worked on this year was an online piece that compared Downtown Fargo bars to the houses in one of my favorite TV shows, "Game of Thrones." I am still open to anyone arguing with me about my choices, and for the record, I'm a member of House Stark.

Pure Bathing Culture

Earlier this fall, a band that describes themselves on their Facebook as "New Age/Blue-Eyed Soul/Love Songs" from Portland, Ore., called Pure Bathing Culture, played with Wild Ones at Studio 222 downtown. It was the best show I've seen in Fargo this year, and I had a great time at a venue that doesn't usually host concerts in that genre.

Proof Artisan Distillers

As tradition would go, I, for the most part, am a bourbon guy.

Give me my Jack or Woodford Reserve, but there are occasions where I'm interested to see what else is out there. That is when I discovered Proof Artisan Distillers. Proof is making their own vodka called 2 Docks and gin called Minions, with whisky to come. When I was introduced to the products by the owner Joel Kath, they where still cooking, but I felt it had something special. When I tasted the finished products, I was right. I would highly recommend that you stop by Proof, try some food and let the mixologists create something wonderful for you. I personally would suggest their Old Fashioned.

Craig Ferguson Fargo Theatre As far as comedy goes in our area, we are getting more and more big names. NDSU fine arts recently brought in Eddie Izzard, and he was very funny. But on a night where people were waiting outside for a famous weather man, inside the Fargo Theatre was something special. Comedian Craig Ferguson was hysterical. For just over 90 minutes, he had the whole crowd in stitches. Now, this was not just a rehash of his former late night show. This was all Craig. After that night, we all learned that we need to check out the bathrooms in Japan and never make a deal with a judge who is also an agent for bad magicians. So, to both Eddie and Craig, thanks for bringing the fun to Fargo.

Presenting: Madd Frank

October Fargo Monthly is always on what is new and hot, but this story took me back. I so vividly remember watching the local show "Madd Frank Presents" on TV, laughing and groaning at the jokes. But the best part is that I knew most of the crew, including Madd Frank himself, Del Dvoracek. He is a great man, and when he was not being Madd, he was helping people with advertising, and I did learn a lot from him back in the day. Erica Rapp did such a great job in the story of capturing everything crazy that is Madd Frank.

Josef's Annual Fashion Awards

This year in February, Josef's School of Hair Design held their 10th annual JAFA event at Avalon West. More than 200 models participated in this event that saw categories ranging from a simple cut and color to the more exotic looks such as Gothic Noir. Two of our staff members had the pleasure of judging the impressive competition.

You probably saw the green bikes all over town this summer. North Dakota's first bike share program launched in Fargo in the middle of March this year. With more than 100 bicycles, 11 stations and close to 15,000 NDSU students automatically enrolled, it made the Great Rides Bike Share program the second-largest in the nation.

South Fargo got a friendly neighborhood bar this spring with great eats and drinks. Frank's Lounge is also home to a bit of Fargo's yesteryears. The owner found and restored a large neon cat that used to adorn the walls of the old Pink Pussycat Lounge off of NP Avenue in Downtown Fargo.

The pink cat is now on the walls of Frank's Lounge and serves as the restaurant's iconic logo.

We don’t like to toot our own horns, but we thought we’d take you back in time to talk about how Fargo Monthly’s publishing company, Spotlight Media, came to be the powerhouse it is today.

t all started, like all good entrepreneurial stories, on a bar napkin. Mike “Drago” Dragosavich was a standout punter at NDSU who attempted to make it big in the NFL. After bouncing around for a couple of years in the NFL, he eventually settled back in Fargo, a city he had grown to love.

“The community of Fargo has done so much for me personally and in business,” said Dragosavich. “Every move I make is determined by how much I can give back to Fargo and continue spreading the word about how great of a place it really is.”

He started a magazine called FM Spotlight to showcase the happenings in town. What started with a CD-sized magazine with a typo on the first cover (Enoy instead of Enjoy) evolved into a publishing company that now produces more than 5,500 pages of original content, prints one million-plus pages of magazines and receives more than one million impressions on fargomonthly.com each year.

“The early days were a grind,” Dragosavich recalled. “I remember standing on the off-ramp of I-94

Dragosavich launched a VIP card that would give you discounts and special deals at local bars and restaurants. He soon realized he kept hearing from his friends, “There’s nothing to do in Fargo.”

Many of those friends from college had decided to pack up and move to the Twin Cities. Dragosavich would have none of that.

handing everyone a magazine as they passed by, calling a prospective customer 20 days in a row to get one meeting or delivering the magazines oneby-one to 300 business all by myself. Now it feels good to have the opportunity to employ people with the same beliefs and attitude to help execute these tasks on a monthly basis.”

After six months in business, he launched a new publication called FM Stride, which was geared toward the fitness community in Fargo-Moorhead. As the revenue and number of employees grew, so did the publications. The magazines soon became full-sized and more opportunities presented themselves. Within one month, the opportunity presented itself to purchase Bison Illustrated and Outdoor Design and Living Magazine, which became Design & Living Magazine.

“I was on the cover of the second ever Bison Illustrated while still playing football for NDSU,” Dragosavich said. “When I had the opportunity to make it part of our portfolio, it was unbelievable that I could take the magazine over and publish it years later. I was nervous when we purchased it because of the high expectations of the reader, but I now realize it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Business continued to grow, as did the knowledge of publishing.

The awards rolled in as well, as they soon began to win several gold and silver Addy awards, a gold award for best feature article from the Minnesota Magazine Publishing Association and several other prestigious awards.

With 20 full-time employees, Spotlight Media has quickly grown.

And they’re not done yet. Come January 1, Spotlight Media will launch a new monthly business magazine called Fargo INC! “We have been working on a business magazine idea for over two years now,” Dragosavich said. “Finally, the time has come to expose how vibrant the Fargo-Moorhead business community is. From start-ups, tech, entrepreneurship, events and more, we are excited to be part of this.”

the realm of Chef Eric Watson's monthly recipes and advice for ​Fargo Monthly.​ Watson taught us a lot about food and what goes into operating a successful restaurant, so we decided to choose some of the delicious recipes that stood out to us. Watson is the owner of Mezzaluna, Rustica and Mosaic Foods in Fargo. He is also the founder and president of the Fargo branch of the American Culinary Federation.

​​Puttanesca Sauce

Ingredients • ¼ cup olive oil • 1 cup diced yellow onion • 5-7 cloves minced garlic • 2 ½ teaspoon dried basil leaves • ½ teaspoon dried oregano leaves • ½ teaspoon dried crushed red pepper flakes • ¼ cup dry white wine • 28-ounce can diced tomatoes, with juice

• 1 cup pitted and halved Kalamata olives • 2 tablespoons capers • 2 tablespoons tomato paste • 2 tablespoons minced anchovy fillets • Salt and fresh-ground black pepper to taste • ¼ cup fresh basil, thinly sliced (chiffonade)

Directions In a medium-sized sauce pan, lightly sauté onions, garlic, dried herbs and crushed pepper flakes in olive oil. Deglaze pan with white wine and reduce by half. Incorporate the tomatoes, olives, capers, tomato paste and anchovies. Season with salt and pepper and bring to a simmer. Simmer for five minutes, fold in fresh basil and serve.

Gratin Dauphinoise

Ingredients • 1 ea. shallot, thinly sliced • 2 ea. garlic cloves, minced • 2-3 Tbsp. butter • ⅛ cup flour, all-purpose • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 ½ tsp. nutmeg • 1 Tbsp. fresh thyme leaves, roughly chopped • 2 lb. potatoes, preferably yukon gold or similar • 2 cups gruyere cheese, freshly shredded • ½ cup bread crumbs • Salt & white pepper, as needed

Directions In a small sauce pan, lightly sauté the shallots and garlic in butter. Dust the pan with the flour and incorporate to create a pan roux. Add the heavy cream and quickly whisk until flour is completely incorporated and lump free.

Season with nutmeg, salt, white pepper and fresh thyme. Bring to a simmer while stirring occasionally, making sure that no lumps form. Once cream mixture

has thickened slightly, remove from heat. Taste the cream mixture and adjust seasonings if needed, keeping in mind that you should over-season the cream in order to achieve a well-seasoned finished Dauphinoise.

Uniformly slice the potatoes into 1/8-inch thick circles.

Quickly shingle a single layer of the potatoes into a small butter-lined baking dish.

Caramelized Figs with Crispy Prosciutto, Mascarpone Cheese & Arugula Pesto Serves 4

Ingredients • 4 ea. fresh black mission fig • ⅛ cup granulated sugar • 1 Tbsp. whole butter • 2 cups arugula • ¼ cup toasted almonds • ½ cup fresh parmesan cheese

• 2 cloves garlic • ⅔ cup olive oil • Salt & pepper, to taste • ½ cup mascarpone cheese • 2 ea. pieces pre-sliced prosciutto

Directions Cut fig in half from top to bottom. Place exposed side of fig in sugar to coat surface. Melt butter in a sauté pan and quickly sear sugared surface of fig.

Remove from pan and set aside.

In a food processor, combine arugula, almonds, parmesan cheese and garlic.

Process until almost smooth in texture. Fold in olive oil, salt and pepper. Slice prosciutto into thin strips and fry in 365-degree oil until crispy. Assemble figs, mascarpone cheese, pesto and crispy prosciutto as desired and serve.

Directions Combine cream and milk in a saucepan and place on medium-high heat.

Without stirring, quickly bring cream to a boil and remove from heat. In a mixing bowl, whisk together egg yolk, sugar and the pulp from the vanilla bean. Slowly ladle hot cream into the egg mixture, making sure to whisk quickly. Once all of the cream is tempered into the eggs, place mixture back in saucepan and return to low heat. Stir the mixture constantly until it thickens slightly. Strain the custard through a fine mesh strainer and allow mixture to cool to room temperature (custard should be in a shallow baking dish). Fold fresh strawberries into the custard. Place custard in refrigerator until mixture falls below 40 degrees. Place the custard in freezer and handchurn with a wooden spoon every 10 to 15 minutes until set.

Chicken Galantine Serves 6-10

Ingredients • 1 whole chicken, fresh • 3 oz. ground pork shoulder • 1 cup fresh heavy cream • 2 whole eggs • 4 egg yolks • ¼ cup pistachio, chopped • ¼ cup dry cherries • ¼ cup golden raisins

• ¼ cup brandy • 1 Tbsp. fresh sage, chopped • ½Tbsp. fresh thyme, chopped ½ Tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped 2 Tbsp.

Kosher salt • ¼ tsp. white pepper, ground • ¼ tsp. cinnamon, ground • ⅛ tsp. nutmeg, ground

Directions De-bone chicken so that skin remains in one intact piece (refer to YouTube videos if needed). Butterfly the boneless/skinless breast meat and pound out slightly with a meat mallet. Place skin and breast meat under refrigeration.

Combine brandy, cherries and raisins and allow to sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.

Pass the boneless chicken leg meat and pork through a meat grinder with the smallest die attachment. In a chilled mixing bowl, fold together the ground chicken and pork with the cream, eggs, pistachios, cherries, raisins, brandy, fresh herbs and seasonings. Place bowl in an ice bath until ready to assemble galantine.

Place a piece of cheesecloth on a clean table surface and lay chicken skin on top. Next, place butterflied chicken breast at the base of the chicken skin.

Using a large spoon and your hand, place ground chicken mixture across the breasts horizontally. Gently roll the entire galantine starting from the bottom to the top. When finished rolling, the galantine should be in a cylinder shape and completely encased with skin and cheesecloth. Twist and tie both ends of the cheesecloth so the galantine is tight throughout. Place galantine in chicken stock or seasoned water that is at approximately 180 degrees.

Poach galantine until an internal temperature of 165 degrees is reached. Remove galantine from the liquid and place in refrigerator overnight until wellchilled and ready to slice.

Recipe comes out to about three liters, which works out to roughly 20 drinks at two ounces per drink in a rocks glass. Use an ice sphere instead of cubes in the drink so that the ice all dilutes at the same pace.

Muddle orange slice and Luxardo cherries at the bottom of a rocks glass and add all liquid ingredients. Top with ice and a few dashes of bitters. Roll between glasses two or three times to incorporate ingredients, do not shake or stir.

To make the smoked simple syrup, Winmill takes fiery and charred wood chunks from the woodfire oven and places them in a container of simple syrup, where the sugar then caramelizes around the wood. After letting it soak for a few minutes, he then strains the syrup so that it is left with a smokey taste, minus the actual charcoal. For the garnish, Winmill takes an orange twist and roasts it in the woodfire oven for crispy edges and a burnt orange feel right on your nose.

Downtown Fargo recently announced plans for a grocery store, a feature that has been long-awaited by the community. At the end of 2016, the Prairie Roots Food Co-op will make its debut downtown, and Membership and Development Director Kaye Kirsch filled us in on all the exciting details.

WHAT IS A CO-OP?

Kaye Kirsch is the membership and development director for the Prairie Roots Food Co-op.

Because the Prairie Roots Food Co-op acts as a cooperative business, that means it’s member-owned.

As of now, they have around 900 members who have invested in the vision of a community-owned grocery store that features natural, organic and local food.

Profits of the store will stay in the community because it’s a locally owned business.

While the grocery store is going to be run like any other business, it also has many social goals in mind, in addition to just bringing great food to the area, all of which can be seen in some of their unique features.

1. Full-Service The 10,000-square-foot space will be a full-service grocery store complete with a robust deli with prepared food, a soup and sandwich bar and more.

“It will be a great destination to come for lunch or to pick up a few groceries as well, or anything you need,

from fresh produce to toilet paper," said Kirsch. "It will be a community resource and a destination place where you can come to learn about great food."

2. Bulk Section One thing that co-ops often feature is a bulk section, where you can buy exactly as much or as little as you might need.

This is also an environmentally conscious feature, as it reduces the amount of packaging and waste.

“We’re going to be encouraging people to bring your empty flour bin and things like that, which can be filled up right at the store,” said Kirsch.

3. Education In addition to bringing local products to the area, the store also aims to help build a healthy community by providing access to programming and education.

They plan to teach things such as eating healthy on a budget, how to eat local in North Dakota given the seasons, enjoying food at the peak of their freshness, how you can preserve food and much more.

4. Local Products Kirsch explained that local food will be featured as much as possible, and they plan to demo many products

of local farmers and tell their stories. You can expect a wide variety of natural and organic products.

5. Economic & Community Impact With this type of co-op, the economic impact is much greater than just bringing in great food. According to Kirsch, for every $1 you spend at a local business, $1.35 recirculates in the local economy. Because this co-op is locally owned by members, and because so much product comes from local farmers, every $1 spent instead turns into $1.60.

“This is going to be a really cool thing to help drive the economic engine of Fargo and to create a commonwealth for all of our members,” explained Kirsch.

Co-ops are also very well known for giving back to their communities. Once the store is profitable, it plans to reinvest in the community and donate to various groups and causes.

INTERESTED IN A MEMBERSHIP?

Membership is open to anybody at any time. It is a $300 investment, but there are a variety of payment options that can start at just $25 to make it an accessible option for all members of the community. Anyone can shop at the store, but members get special deals and discounts, in addition to being able to decide what happens with the store’s profits. $1.1 million needs to be raised by the end of the year for the store’s launch to happen, so an “Own It” campaign has been launched and invites anyone to become a member.

This drink will bring you all the comfort of holiday cooking with that signature kick of a classic Manhattan. To start, a yam is juiced and boiled together with brown sugar, cloves and a cinnamon stick. Rye whisky, sweet vermouth, an egg white and fresh-squeezed orange juice is added to the mix and topped with Cardamom bitters. to witness such great growth in the business climate lately, and I am feeling optimistic about our region as a whole. Not only is our community growing in terms of population and business, but we’ve received even more positive accolades in the media, from Moorhead being named a best small city, Fargo being named a best place to live, best downtown, best college town to find a job and North Dakota being named a best state for business. I love being a part of such a vibrant metro.

I’m proud to say that our Chamber has also had an incredible year. Our events and programs continue to grow, and we continue to advocate for the important issues affecting our region and business community.

We’ve continued to collaborate and take a variety of stances on important

Lastly, our Young Entrepreneurs Academy launched as the first regional program in the state. This program is aimed at middle and high school-aged students to help them connect with and learn from area businesspeople while launching their own real business. Our inaugural class started meeting in September and the students are already making great strides as budding entrepreneurs.

None of this work could have been done without a great network of people. We have over 500 amazing volunteers involved in The Chamber serving in various roles, from committee members to ambassadors to board members and more. I thank each and every person and company that has attended or spoke at one of our events, sponsored an event or program, collaborated with us or just supported our efforts this past year.

We have a stellar group of individuals in the region.

We’ve hosted great names in the region, too, from Rudy Giuliani speaking at Voices of Vision just last month to country music icon Lee Greenwood’s live performance at our military night at the RedHawks to U.S. Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James visiting the Fargo Air Base. ICTURE THIS: you’re a college student looking to go back home and visit your family for the weekend, but you don’t have a car. Or, you’d like to attend a concert a few hours away but don’t want to be the only person paying for gas. How do you go about getting from point A to point B efficiently and hassle-free while saving a little bit of cash? Look no further. Two Fargo residents and Botlink employees have teamed up to bring Jumpr to the world, a rideshare app that matches riders and drivers with a common destination.

or Matthew Sullivan, an infrastructure engineer at Botlink, the need for rideshare assistance came to him during his time in college. Being from a small town in Northern Minnesota five hours away and not having a vehicle in town made it a difficult and daunting task to visit home on the weekends. Between multiple bus transfers and hoping for extra rides, a five-hour drive would turn into a 16-hour trip and by that time, the weekend was basically over.

“Sometimes I would carpool with NDSU students or people I didn’t know. Although it worked, it was really painful and a lot of effort to put all of those rides together,” said Sullivan.

“So, that was the genesis of this idea.

What if we could streamline that entire process and make it smoother, similar to Airbnb?”

With Jordan Nelson, an app designer at Botlink, his end of the idea came from working with another friend in the tech industry, who was constantly coming to him with ideas that always tended to drift off to the backburner.

“We came up with this idea that was a transportation hub for students, kind of like Uber for college kids or a designated driver app with a rideshare board,” said Nelson. “I had all of this work done, and it ended up being a project that just faded into the sunset. But when Matthew (Sullivan)

asked me to design a logo for him, we kind of talked about our similar ideas and it just fell together.”

The duo knew that since they had such similar ideas, that there was a growing need for their idea and it gave them validation to merge their professional skills together and create Jumpr in March of 2015.

Nelson and Sullivan explained that the app is mainly targeted toward younger college students, which is relatively easy due to the fact that many freshman and sophomores don’t bring their cars to campus and some larger schools don’t even allow them.

However, they explained that it could be a very efficient tool for older crowds too. It can be used for anything from finding people to tag along with down to Frisco, Tex. to watch the Bison or attending a concert out of town. This is where the duo sees the demographics of the app users blending, especially since there would already be a common interest between the riders and drivers.

“Our goal is to take away from the creepy Craigslist posts, make you comfortable and meet people with common interests. It doesn’t work if you have to ride with someone you’re scared of, so safety was a big hurdle,” explained Nelson.

After speaking at a 1 Million Cups event, they were overwhelmed by the amount of interested people that reached out to them. They hope to work with investors and universities to help sponsor the app, especially since the app would be a strong benefit to schools. As of right now, the pair is just trying to get the buzz going and keeping the idea of jumping on everyone’s mind.

HOW THE APP WORKS 1. You’ll create a Jumpr account by signing in with your Facebook account. This allows you to see mutual friends of those you match with, that way you can do your own background check on who you’ll be in a car with.

2. If you sign in as a driver, you’ll need to provide your driver’s license and other forms of identification, your car make and model and your bank account information so that you can get paid. You’ll make a post about where you’re going and list your seat price, which is generated by the app based on your type of vehicle and the destination.

3. If you sign in as a rider, you’ll provide your credit card information so that you can easily make a payment to the driver for gas. You can search where your destination is, find a driver match and purchase your seat ticket.

4. When you find a driver match, you’re able to read in-app reviews of previews trips based on the driver’s safety, communication, cleanliness and comfort. There’s also an in-app messaging system so you can work out the details of your trip.

5. If you’re a driver, the money from the riders will be deposited directly into your bank account. At the end of the year, you’ll be given a 1099 tax form for the money you made. Payments are handled through a separate company to ensure secure transactions.

failure: SOMETHING TO BE CELEBRATED

E

ntrepreneurs are the new pop culture celebrity.

They’re celebrated in the press for their flashy lifestyle, they’ve been glorified in films such as "The Social Network" and "The Intern," and they’ve been put on a pedestal as an example of the American dream. Yet the reality is that the journey can be painful and personally straining. The risk, the pressure and the pursuit can be isolating. The journey of starting something is also flooded with the possibility of things going in unexpected ways.

And for some of these risk takers, the journey ends because of funding, partnership disagreements or lack of passion. Often times, these pursuits are labeled as failures, something to be feared and avoided at all costs.

Yet for me, I’ve never believed this to be true. I believe strongly that the pursuit of an idea and belief in the name of a cause is critical for our community to thrive, and we have to celebrate the fight, the belief and the folks who dared to believe their idea might just come true. The so-called failure is filled with learning and often new ideas and perspectives. Many times it leads to innovation and unpredictable discoveries.

As the year wraps up, I’d like to tip my cup of coffee to a few folks who closed the door on one of their ideas and celebrate them for their commitment and belief in building something special.

JIM BASTIAN’S MAGNETIC PHONE MOUNT The 89-year-old stole the hearts of the 1 Million Cups Community as he received the first ever standing ovation. It appears his pursuit of the Magnetic Phone Mount is coming to an end, yet my heart is filled with admiration for someone who has pursued his dream with courage and dedication. Someone who, despite his age, continued to learn, put his funds at risk and work tirelessly to promote his vision.

JEAN TAYLOR’S Z!NG Creating the first restaurant in the region featuring food ordered from a mobile phone, “Momma” Jean is a pioneer with the concept of simplifying the ordering process. Sadly, Z!ng shut its doors in March 2015. The building is now home to Barbacoa, a restaurant featuring the fusion of Mexican and barbecue.

KYLE COOLBROTH’S COCO FARGO The Twin City collaborative workspace was recruited heavily to come to Fargo. Many good things happened, including CoSchedule being able to pitch at Google Demo Days. Yet in May, the membership didn’t hit the marks CoCo had hoped for, and Kyle’s team decided to finish their experience in Fargo. The Prairie Den has continued the spirit, in hopes of reaching CoCo’s vision of a great place for folks to work.

As 2015 comes to a close, let us remind ourselves to celebrate those who push us and those who take

risks and are willing to put their time and energy into something that the world has yet to see. Although Magnetic Phone Mount, MELD Workshop, CoCo and Z!ng will not be around in 2016, let us reflect and honor the work of Jim, John, Momma Jean, Kyle and countless others who took steps to pursue their own venture.

Failure is not a bad word.

It is not something to be afraid of. It is important for all of us to honor and celebrate those who were willing to pursue their dreams and continue to support them. Oftentimes, it’s the Jims, Johns, Jeans and Kyles of the world who give us the next great organization to believe in.
