FROM THE EDITOR

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER s usual, it’s been a whirlwind of a summer. We’ve seen a plethora of different events, concerts and gatherings for the community to enjoy. On top of that, it’s been the season of new businesses for eating, shopping and more. Needless to say, we’ve been busy… but not busy enough to avoid bringing our readers a unique story, from an even more unique perspective. This month, we’re taking a look at everything pet in the community, but from the perspective of our in-house professional—a dog. Our Client Relations Manager Jenny Johnson kindly let us work with her pomeranian to go through a day of doggy activities. And while I don’t personally have a pet, I have come to appreciate the love that others have for their furry friends! If you can believe it, we’re soaking up the last bit of the summer before fall comes crashing in; but don’t fret, we still have plenty of sun and fun left of the season. It seems like there has something for everyone every night of the week this summer, but we’ve got to squeeze in our outdoor time with what we’ve got in these few seasonal months. It’s been wonderful to see so many friendly faces out and about this summer. As we wind down our season, try to get in the last bit of your outdoor enjoyment with family, friends and pets alike.

Making a Lasting Social Impact one Mathematical Equation at a Time

Mukomere Cyane! (Greetings in InKinyaRwanda)thismonthwhen we transition back to school, I wanted to connect with a person passionate about education. I have had the fortune to meet many during my time in college and I decided to visit with a dear NDSU friend. Sir Daniel Luecke was born and raised in Fargo. He finished high school at Fargo South, joined NDSU Football during its glorious multiple streak victories seasons and pursued his PhD at NDSU in Mathematics and Math Education. Recently, Luecke's work entails being a graduate student, leading a campus ministry called the Impact Movement, and being a newly hired faculty at Turtle Mountain Community College. The role there is to develop a Bachelor's degree in Math Education and develop the Ojibwe Math Incourses.hisown words: "I am married to the most amazing woman, Kali, who is certainly out of my league. We are blessed with two very cute daughters, Kamila Joy and Eliza Faith." Luecke loves being outside with family, telling dad jokes, participating in any sporting activity, and working on house projects are some of his favorite hobbies. "I love Fargo because of the people. There are so many wonderful people here and I am so thankful for each one of them." Luecke said when asked about the FM area. Help me wish him and his beautiful family all the best in their new journey at the Turtle Mountain Community College. Until next time, Be -CyusaWell!

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL 36 | AUGUST 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

Where do you call home? Home is where my family is. I grew up in Fargo and have many memories here with my family, friends and neighbors. Fargo is a special place to me as it is the place I grew up, went to college, went to graduate school, got married, where our two kids were born and where we live Homecurrently.iswhere my family was. My great grandparents are from Ireland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Nobody chose the family they were born into, but our Creator determined this for us all. I’m learning to honor all my ancestors, their journeys, and the places and communities they called home. Could you share the multiple hats you have worn and still wear on the NDSU campus? I came to NDSU because I was recruited to play football. It was an amazing experience to be part of the first three FCS national championship teams. A couple of years after graduating, I returned to NDSU to be involved full-time with a campus ministry called Cru. After a couple of years, I entered graduate school at NDSU. Now, I have completed my master's in math and am hopefully finishing my Ph.D. in math and math education soon. During graduate school, I became very involved with two student organizations, BSA (Black Student Association) and the Impact Movement. Participating and building relationships with those in BSA has been a huge blessing to me. I always felt welcomed and am so thankful for the impressive leadership of BSA throughout the years. The Impact Movement equips Black students to become disciples of Jesus Christ who integrate their faith into every aspect of their life. It has been an honor to be part of Impact and have many students into our home throughout the Recentlyyears.on campus, I was part of the group that changed some of the Memorial Union room names to the Oceti Sakowin Ballroom and Anishinaabe Theatre. The Oceti Sakowin and Anishinaabe nations have lived sustainably on this land for millennia. These room name changes are a small way to honor, bring visibility to, and hopefully, increase positive relationships with the Oceti Sakowin and Anishinaabe Peoples still here today. Can you share the story of your passion for Mathematics? My passion for math exponentially grew as I came to realize the impact of being a math teacher can have on a student and a community. Schools are often the heartbeat of a community, and I have enjoyed building relationships through being a teacher. I was recently hired at Turtle Mountain Community College to teach math and develop a bachelor’s degree in math education. My family and I are moving to the Turtle Mountain area this summer. The power of showing up and creating safe spaces for others? Recently I heard a powerful spoken word titled “Show Up” by poet Joe Davis. This poem highlights the power of showing up to fight injustice. I also learned within Indigenous education and research By Alexandre Cyusa Photo by Josiah Kopp

the phrase ‘seen face’ (Decolonizing Methodologies, 2012) which conveys that being seen at important community events establishes one’s relationships within that community. Previous to this, I learned the ‘ministry of presence’ from the actions and words of my wife and the Christian community she was a part of in innercity Memphis. This ‘ministry of presence’ emphasizes living and investing in the same neighborhood as you work. All three of these examples together have cemented within me the power of showing up and being present. Over time trust is built. Strangers become friends as experiences and stories are shared together. To me, a safe space is created when we listen and believe the stories shared by strangers or friends without discrediting their emotion or the validity of what they say. Why should and how can people learn about places outside the Midwest? After getting my bachelor’s at NDSU, I wanted to explore the world before going to graduate school. I lived in Vadodara, Gujarat in the country of India. I also lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands before coming back to Fargo. It was beautiful to experience the distinct norms of living and be part of cultures that I did not grow up in. This diversity shows off the beauty of our Creator, having his image shine through all of us in distinct ways. I wish everyone could travel internationally and have similar experiences, but it is not always an option for people. Something that you can do right now is meet people here in FargoMoorhead from a different racial/ethnic background than yourself. Show up and meet some new people at a restaurant, cultural event, in your neighborhood or school, or in your workplace. I would certainly encourage you to show up to a powwow or Indigenous Peoples Day event and meet people who are indigenous to the Midwest long before the title ‘Midwest’ ever existed. What is one thing you have experienced in your international travels that you wish we had more here? The level of hospitality I experienced in India, the Netherlands and Germany changed the way I live today. Especially while being a math teacher in India, many co-workers invited me into their homes for a meal. I desire to live in such a way, having co-workers, neighbors and acquaintances into our home for a meal. In contrast to xenophobia (the fear of others), the ancient Greek word often translated to hospitality is philoxenia (love for strangers). I wish for myself, and us all, that we would invite coworkers, neighbors and acquaintances into our homes for a meal together.

What is your vision for 2030? Where will you be and why? Personally, I pray that I would be more passionate in responding to the extreme love of Jesus that I have and continue to experience. My faith in Jesus has bloomed in the past 10 years, and I hope to say the same for the next 10 years. I pray the same for my wife and daughters. Related to work, I pray that I will be a math professor who cares about people, is compassionate, and is able to prepare college students to become middle school and high school math instructors with a passion for their community. I hope to prepare teachers that can connect mathematics to people’s everyday life experiences. Lord willing, my family and I will be part of the Turtle Mountain community. By 2030, I hope to be proficient in Ojibwe and that my daughters will be bilingual. I hope that I can teach math that connects the higher order mathematical thinking demonstrated by the Turtle Mountain Ojibwe people in their language, heritage, and culture with the contemporary math classroom.

Artist Feature: “I’ve always had a fascination with a single lone tree. They are so majestic, like a soldier on the prairie. Anytime I’m driving and I see a lone tree, I pull over. It's like my mantra; See a tree, pull over. Anyone who rides in my car knows those are the rules and has to accept that.”

Award-winning Fargo photographer Scott Seiler laughs at what seems on the surface to be a harmless quirk, yet is really one of the secrets to his success. Never miss an opportunity—yet his stunning images are hardly impulsive, as he will often revisit a site multiple times in different lighting and seasons to get his “one perfect shot." “I like going out hunting and searching for a view that gives the landscape personality," Seiler said. "Maybe it’s an angle no one has seen before. A lot of my photos are very linear and geometrical. How I position foreground and background is almost a mathematical equation.”

Maybe it’s an angle no one has seen before. A lot of my photos are very linear and geometrical. How I position foreground and background is almost a mathematical equation.”

Proving math can be a powerful tool in the hands of the right artist, Scott’s images both capture memories and evoke strong emotions. One notable example is a photo collage he created after the death of Fargo Police Officer Jason Moszer.

Scott keeps the community in mind, even when creating the rural and landscape photography he is regionally known for. “I’m always hitting the back roads looking for a piece of that iconic Midwest. So much is changing, going away, evolving. It has a lot of great memories for those who grew up with it, like me, and is an education for those who don’t know what things are, or why something was incorporated into farming or ranching life. I try to keep a simple approach because that allows the viewer to glean their own emotion from it.”

“That incident happened near my home, and when it was over people started putting blue lights on their porches, remembering and honoring what he went through," Seiler said. "I was intrigued by how the lights changed the look of the architecture of the houses. So I went around and took photos of the different homes lit in different shades and hues of blue, and did a collage. When I put it on display people would stop and ask about it, what it was, and some would want to learn more, and some would talk about law enforcement in their area. It really evoked a response from the community.”

If Scott isn’t working at Gallery 4 in Downtown Fargo where he is a featured artist, he can be found connecting with the community at trade shows in the summer and throughout the year.

“I think an important part of being an artist is sharing and getting feedback from other people," he said. "You have these great conversations. Hearing what people think about a piece, I will appreciate my work in a different way. Or it might spark a whole new outlook or series of photography. I feel like each time I take a photo it is the culmination of everything that’s come before.”

Are you the next RollerGirl?DerbyByMakenziJohnson

The objective of roller derby is to score points by helping your team’s jammer, or pastpoint-scorer,designatedtoskatetheotherteamwhilekeepingtheotherteam’sjammerfrompassingyourteam.

A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS 48 | AUGUST 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

Because roller derby is a full-contact sport, good equipment is necessary when skating: quad roller skates, knee pads, a helmet and more.

llison Reynolds in the Breakfast Club. Danielle Larusso in The Karate Kid. Beca Mitchell in Pitch Perfect. At the root of it, the your“outcasts”so-calledoffavoritecult classic movies are really just characters who felt like they didn’t belong. But with some movie magic, these characters suddenly find their place of belonging. It doesn’t have to be reserved for the movies, for the detention hours in the library, the karate dōjōs or the acapella group rehearsals. Finding a sense of belonging, a second family, and a space that encourages you to be the best version of yourself can be found right here in Fargo—on the track with the FM Derby Girls. Roller derby originally made its way to American sports culture in the 1930s, with credited founder, Leo Seltzer, claiming it was a sport for everyone. The intention for a humble, family sport quickly turned into a show of theatricals and dramatics, becoming known for its violence on the track. Roller derby was about drawing in a crowd to see the violent take outs as fists were being thrown from player to player, and skaters tackled anyone who got in their way. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that roller derby began to take on a new meaning. Some credit the newer, competitive, nature of roller derby to the Riot Grrrl movement which introduced a feminist lens to the sport. Roller derby wasn’t just for show anymore—it was a way for women to show their competitive side and let out their inner athlete. Formed in 2008, the Fargo Moorhead Derby Girls live by their mission of “empowering individuals to fulfill their potential, both on and off the track.” This is more than just pushing and shoving while trying to stay balanced on a pair of quad roller skates. Skater Katie AKA Artachoker, has been a part of the FMDG for more than 10 years. Being on the team has been more rewarding than she would have ever imagined.

49

“I was out one night and I saw these girls come in and I thought, ‘those girls are so cool. I want to be cool,’” Katie said. “They told me that Fresh Meat was starting and that I could come. Two days later I’m buying skates and pads. It’s been amazing ever since then.”

Katie says it’s not uncommon for the FMDG to get former college hockey players to join the team as a way to stay active in a contact sport. Other athletes from sports like lacrosse or rugby have joined the team as well, but Katie likes to reassure people that athletic and skating experience is not necessary to join. “We have a big training committee and great coaches that really help us,” Katie Insaid.addition to help from coaches, the Fresh Meat training program teaches everything roller derby related: how to skate, how to stop, how to safely fall, the rules of the game, and more. Skaters, new and old, work on their individual skills and endurance so they are ready for game Skaterday.Jenna AKA Tasmanian Rebel went to Fresh Meat training in 2016 not having any experience and has been skating with the FMDG ever since. “Obviously a cool pair of skates are essential to roller derby, but so is hard work,” Jenna said. “You need to be willing to not give up and have a lot of Indetermination.”thepast, games were commonly referred to as a bout, now simply being referred to as a game. In a normal season from March to September, the FMDG plays one to two games a month. In addition to that, they also hold two-hour practices, twice a week, in order to help further develop endurance and skills. Katie suggests those who are interested in roller derby to come to a practice to see what it’s all about—at the John E. Coliseum at North High School in the summertime then Skate City in the fall. To reassure any more reluctant or anxious thoughts of whether or not to try roller derby, Katie strongly reiterates the fact that everyone on the team is always learning and skill level doesn’t matter.

The FMDG has a crew of coaches and trainers dedicated to helping every skater, no matter if you have never skated in your life or could skate with your eyes closed.

Fresh Meat, the training camp for new skaters, happens ideally twice a year. For anyone interested in joining roller derby, this is the first step—and it doesn’t matter if you have never skated in your entire life or are a professional on skates, you’re allowed to come out. “There are very few of us on the team that have had experience with this type of sport before,” Katie said. “The last time I skated before roller derby was in middle school when we went to Skate City for a party, and it took me a while to get to where I am now.”

Jenna echoes Katie’s appreciation for the community, and more, saying: “I love the people, but I also love that you get to work on skills and accomplish things. I feel like as adults, you don’t get to be proud of yourself very often, but here you can.”

The community within the team is something that Katie says makes it all worth it.

A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS 52 | AUGUST 2022 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

On the team, all skaters are “Itwelcome.doesn’t matter your size, your shape, or your athletic type—you can be any body type and you’ll be good for roller derby,” Katie said. “We have big blockers that are tall and big, and then we have small jammers that are quick and fast. It’s a perfect sport for anybody.”

The other women she skates with became like a second family and the skating track became a second home. She found her place of belonging, not in an 80s rom-com or coming-of-age independent film but on the roller derby track with her teammates—and you can find yours right there, too. If you’d like to learn more about the FM roller derby scene, check out the FMDG’s Facebook page, @fmderbygirls for more information about involvement in the league. Or, email them at fmdgrecruit@gmail.com for questions about watching a practice or enrolling in the Fresh Meat training program.

In 2020 and 2021, the FMDG did not have any organized practice sessions or games, which meant for about two years, some of the derby girls weren’t skating at all. Getting back into the groove of all things roller derby hasn’t been the easiest, for both the pro and novice skaters. “We all took a while for our skate legs to come back,” Katie said.

One thing that the FMDG is always striving to make a priority is involvement in the community through charity and relationships. “We have a nonprofit status so we give back to the community,” Katie said. “We give backpacks for backpack drives and part of the money we make goes to an organization that helps women and children.”

I've learned a ton, but I'm really appreciative of the Charger's organization. There's really good leadership and really good people there."

What about your NFL experience so far has exceeded your expectations? What has been like, 'wow, that's so cool'? Yeah, there's been a lot of things. The biggest thing is just like, 'okay, I'm here. I'm playing in the NFL.' That's the coolest thing. I'm living out a childhood dream and to be able to do that for a long time is going to take a lot of work and that's something that I'm excited to do.

Pregame Q&A With

I think it has been so huge in my development. Expecting to win every game and going in with the mindset of, 'we are going to win this game,' and doing whatever it takes to scratch and claw to get there - I think that's something that I'm going to take with me for the rest of my life. Whatever the circumstances are and no matter how the odds are stacked against you, it's about knowing that we're going to find a way some way somehow.

Cordell Volson OL Cincinnati Bengals

How do you think your time at NDSU, on a number of championship teams, has prepared you to step into an organization that was literally as close as you could be to winning a championship last season?

Cordell Volson was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals?

What's it been like living outside of North Dakota for the first time in your life? It's been great. It's been a lot smoother of a transition than I was anticipating, but it's been really good. I like Cincinnati. I like the city. The people have been great to me. To be able to go to a city like that that really loves football and cares about winning, it's great. I don't want to say it's like being in Fargo, but it's kind of got that feel to it a little bit. Have you found anything fun around the city that you've enjoyed outside of football? You know, I haven't had a ton of time to get out and do some things, but it's a nice area. They have a river that comes through there and they have all kinds of stuff to do along the river. There are a lot of cool things and stuff to do around there. They have parades and stuff like that. All of the suburbs kind of have their own small-town feel. They have their own little small-town events and that's cool. That's something that I'm really looking forward to being a part of. A lot has been made about your position versatility and the fact that early on in the offseason here, they've had you working at both Guard spots. With that and the added dynamic of absorbing an NFL playbook, what has that experience been like? It's been great. I was fortunate at NDSU. We ran a ton of offense, so, I have a good grasp of all types of schemes. You know, the versatility piece—the best ability is availability. So, if you're able to step in at any position and play, you're going to make yourself really valuable to the team. If that's something that helps me moving forward, that's sure as heck something I'm going to do.

Did you know? Cordell Volson appeared in a school-record 65 career games during his time at NDSU. Did you know?

Going into your second year in Minnesota, what has the coaching change been like?

Ben Ellefson has appeared in 12 games across two NFL seasons which is no small feat for a former undrafted free agent.

Te Minnesota Vikings

It's a testament to NDSU and the coaches they bring in and the importance they put on attention to detail. I think it all starts in the weight room with Coach Kramer. That first summer you're up here, you kind of learn what you're getting yourself into and you either learn how to do that and you learn to work in the system that NDSU has created or you don't and you don't end up lasting. A lot of what I've learned through NDSU has prepared me and I don't know if I'd be at the level I'm at, or if I would have had the opportunities that I have had if I would have went somewhere else, just because of what NDSU has done for me.

59

Pregame Q&A With Did you know?

It has been great. This coaching staff has done a really good job. The offense has been great. Obviously, having a younger head coach is the way the NFL is moving and to have that at the Viking's facility has been pretty special. We're installing a whole new system so obviously there's a bit of a learning curve there, but I think everybody is really excited in that building and I'm very excited to move forward with it. Everyone always talks about the process and the attention to detail that goes on at NDSU. How do you think that has prepared you for the NFL?

Ben Ellefson

You grew up in Hawley, MN. What do you think are some of the added benefits of going to school so close to home? It's great. Having that community of support and people there for a home-cooked meal, advice or whatever is great. My parents are always there. I have a lot of friends that went to NDSU and to be able to be around them is pretty special. Not a lot of people get to do that. Some people go halfway across the country and they don't see their family for five years while they're at school. I was very blessed to be able to go to school close to home and to have the success that we did at NDSU, winning four national championships in my time there—that was pretty special. At NDSU you were very involved in the passing game. However, that was somewhat limited to the red zone. How did that experience prepare you to embrace what has been, to this date, more of a blocking role in the NFL? It's all about finding your role, accepting it and embracing it. You're not always going to be the star, having 100 catches a season, but as long as you can embrace your role, that's what it's all about. Special teams is another really important thing at the NFL level. For anyone trying to make it, that's how you do it, by impressing on special teams and working your butt off.

eo was conceptualized almost a year and a half ago as Founder Michael Betlock saw an opportunity in the FM market for a more individualized boutique approach to commercial interior design. After working out of his home for nine months, his business exploded beyond the capacity of his small basement office and he knew neo needed a place to grow.

neo interior design studio

Meet Michael Betlock and Haley Kaspari, neo Design Duo

The main objective for the new space was to create a collaborative environment that fosters out-of-theordinary design solutions.

COURTE A&E / HEALTH & SPORTS / HOME & DESIGN / FOOD & DRINK / PARENTS + KIDS / BUSINESS / SHOPPING / CAREERS

During Betlock's search for studio spaces in Fargo, neo continued to expand and became a team of two, bringing Haley Kaspari on board.

"Haley and I are both fully immersed in one another's projects as to keep our design philosophies aligned with neo's mission to create unexpected spaces and unique environments," Betlock said. His goal is that every project completed under the studio's name will scream "NEO!"

"Our goal was to remove all traces of its former life and create a space that embraced the eclectic and intriguing elements that set neo IDS apart," Betlock said. After finalizing a floor plan, demolition began with the help of C2 Construction, and the space was completely gutted to give them a blank slate. With blood, sweat and happy tears, they painted, tiled, laid carpet, hung wallcovering and even designed and built their own breakroom island. Their design approach is to go all-in and scale back as the client sees fit. In this case, they felt the eclectic vibe and over-thetop finishes spoke to neo's vision. Little by little, the space came to life and a few months later, they could not have been happier with the finished product.

After many renditions of floor plans at multiple locations, they decided to take on the task of renovating an abandoned hair salon in the 25th St Market Professional Building. The existing space had an awkward layout and was comprised of 18 fluorescent shop light fixtures, purple sponge paint and mirrored display shelves.

They also factored in all of the technology required to perform their duties as designers.

When clients enter, they can expect to immerse themselves in a unique space that inspires their own creative vision. Since neo has incorporated so many different textures and finishes, a client can imagine what they would like to see in their own space. The neo team has already had clients take inspiration from their studio and ask for an oversized wall mural, a unique tile backsplash install, a tin ceiling effect and even a graffiti brick wall!

"We would love for each client to enter the space and have to do a 'double take' on every square foot of our studio," Betlock said. "Even clients that visit us and initially say 'I have no design taste/ideas' will have their own creativity positively charged and they will be able to personally explore fresh and exciting ideas for their own space."

Offering Clients More In Betlock's previous work experiences, interior design always seemed to be put on the back burner until a project was already well developed. This often resulted in a finished product that did not seem cohesive inside and out. At neo, they begin the design process simultaneously with their architectural partner, Übl Design Group from Bismarck, ND. They also offer their clients the one-onone attention they deserve. If a client needs numerous meetings to fully understand their project and the process, neo is more than willing to walk them through each step. The resources they have on-site provide the ability to walk through a project in their cozy conference room and quickly substitute materials via their finish-sample library.

-Michael Betlock

Must-haves checklist: • Three large office spaces • A materials library • A small break room • A comfortable conference room.

While looking for a home for neo, Betlock and Kaspari looked at many spaces they thought would work well to incorporate all needs of the studio.

In addition, neo prides itself on providing the best value for each individual; they feel design should not be something that gets pushed aside because of budget. Oftentimes, they see small (and large) businesses trying the DIY approach to design due to a lack of funds and/or the misunderstood value of thoughtful interior design. The result ends up feeling disjointed and uninspired. neo will work with each client to provide a solution that fits their personal budget and reflects their own company's culture. neo is excited for continued growth and engagement within the community. They intend to bring the highest level of unique design to the Midwest and feel their new studio space is the perfect environment to help them expand and continue to find success. They also look forward to using their space and skills to support the community through volunteer events and networking opportunities.

Artwork & Decor "Each piece throughout the space is specially curated and holds meaning that has shaped who I am throughout my life," Betlock said. "One of my favorite pieces is the Banksy 'Panda with Guns' graffiti as it advocates for peace in a truly unexpected way. I also love the Molly Ringwald/Breakfast Club pop-art print on canvas."

But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess and a criminal." -The Breakfast Club, 1985 As neo continues to grow, they are always looking for additional pieces that inspire and intrigue. Pieces that make a person take a second look. Some that they have acquired recently are the vintage photographs that reflect Betlock and Kaspari's individual personalities. Kaspari chose the "vintage ladies with tattoos" to adorn her office, while Betlock found a special connection to "child smoking with chicken."

This classic movie comes with a timeless message that has defined neo in a particular way: "You see us as you want to see us in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions.

The Perfect Office Pets are...Ants?

While searching for an office pet, neo wanted something "untraditional" that would also give hours of entertainment. A goldfish simply wasn't the answer. They considered sea monkeys, jellyfish and hermit crabs. Their web search for a designer sea monkey aquarium took them down a rabbit hole that led to custom designer ant farm frames! This solution seemed perfect; it was unique, modern and a living work of art. neo quickly realized the ants embodied a new approach to the currently popular "live moss wall." The ants allowed for biophilic design to be injected into their space in a previously unexplored way. They love the symbolism of their tiny architects working alongside them as they build bridges, excavate tunnels and create their own collaborative working environment. neo will be posting updates of their ever-changing environment on their social media pages @neo_ids For more information, visit neointeriordesignstudio.com

Q: How did you learn to cook?

One item currently featured on this menu is Onion Glazed Pickled Hiramasa with smoked mayonnaise, smoked trumpet mushrooms, radish, and olive oil.

Q: What dishes/foods/cooking styles do you specialize in?

A: The meal itself needs to be wellrounded for me in several ways. I need good textures represented throughout the whole meal, not just all soft or chewy. I want crunch, crisp, snap, things that you have to pull from, lots of different well-treated ingredients. Then, there's flavor balance like sweet and salty or sour and salty and heavy umami flavor. I also really like hot and cold contrasts in the meal. After that, it’s probably the way you eat it that makes the most impact. Having small plates—and a lot of them—that all go together or need each other to bring a complete meal together will get you there. I think staying away from diminishing returns is important to have a good experience with even the best Allmeal.those ideas together make a pretty good meal, but I think good company and evoked nostalgia are what make a great meal.

Q: When did you start working at the restaurant and how did you find this A:opportunity? I’m from Missouri, the Kansas City area. Where I grew up certainly does have an impact on my role as a chef. Growing up in the Central Midwest has had a huge impact on my tastes and the way I look at food.

A: I have a large stake in preservation styles like fermenting, smoking, curing, pickling etc. All the things you take for granted growing up where seasonality is a big part of life and the way you eat. This actually makes Fargo a great fit for me—a place where it is essential to find ways to preserve the harvest bounty so it can be used all year round, even in the dead of winter.

Q: In your opinion, what makes a great meal?

A: I was a latchkey kid so I was home alone a lot at a young age. I cooked a lot of soup. When I wasn't home alone, I was with my Grandma Marion, who is responsible for teaching me how to cook. The very first thing I remember cooking, she called, “bird in a nest.” It's toast with a hole cut out with a glass and you cook an egg in it. That was probably when I was about seven or eight because I remember getting a salad shooter (this vegetable processor from the early 90s) and a grilled cheese maker when I was nine for my birthday. As cliche as it sounds, it all started really early with my grandma, as it usually does. we have here at Rosewild. It’s a dish that brings out char and smoke, but also stays subtle with clean fish flavors, huge savory notes from the Jimmys, and bright acidic pops from the dill-brined tomatoes to counter all the richness. It's an evoked form of a classic Steak Oscar. I like things to seem avant-garde, but taste and feel approachable. What might seem unusual should come across as surprisingly familiar.

We sat down for a quick Q&A with the new President. Did you ever envision yourself stepping into a role like this? I grew up as a teacher's kid in Marshall, Minnesota. When I started high school, as a ninth grader, my dad was on one end of the building and my mother was on the other end of the building. So being in an educational setting is just a fit for me. I came out of college with a degree in communications and journalism. And I went to work at two daily newspapers in southern Minnesota and then had an opportunity to go to work at a university in the public information office. I have invested most of my career in public higher education from there. Did you fall in love with the academic setting immediately after transitioning from journalism? First of all, those of us who have grown up in educational households—we teacher’s kids, have an understanding of education and a comfort level with being in an educational environment more so than some other people do. My path to educational administration started as a staff member in a university relations office. And then I went to graduate school and had an opportunity to teach as a graduate assistant in journalism and communication, and then wound up taking on leadership roles in the private sector, nonprofit sector and then back into an educational environment. And I worked my way up from there. If you are a believer in the Clifton Strengths assessments, one of my strengths is that I'm a learner. That means I'm somebody who finds interest in one aspect of my work, or my life, which then leads to interest in another area. That has very much reflected my career path. Working in a university relations office, I discovered the importance of alumni relations and fundraising at a university and how those tie into a mission.

his past May, Oak Grove Lutheran School in Fargo named Bob Otterson as its 12th president following his four months as Oak Grove's interim president. The school's Board of Regents Chair, Sherri Thomsen, was quoted in a press release from the institution "Mr.stating:Otterson has shown the leadership style that we were told to expect from him—strategic, participatory, people-oriented, empowering, communicative and certainly forthright, to use one of his words. His knowledge and expertise in advancement and focused leadership in education have been demonstrated in recent weeks at Oak Grove Lutheran School. The board has been energized by his work since January.”

How do you think not going directly into the academic track prepared you for it? That's a good question. In most educational settings, whether it's an independent school like Oak Grove, or a college or university, the people in the highest leadership positions usually came up through a teaching path. For me, I was able to work with a lot of constituent groups, whether that's alumni or whether that's donors or even working in marketing communications with mainstream media, to work on messaging and sharing the stories of where I was working through media channels. I have developed an appreciation for a college or university or a school as a whole. I was able to look beyond a certain academic department or a certain academic program and see a broader picture. That has been influential for me. And why do you think Oak Grove is the right fit for you for your next stop?

"Being in an educational environment, like Oak Grove, where we have children from preschool through 12th grade with parents who are engaged in their education, just feels like a natural place for me to be."

Oak Grove is what's called an independent school because it operates independently, for the most part, from the public school districts. Independent schools share some characteristics with colleges and universities. So my nearly 25 years of a career invested in public higher education translates to a place like Oak Grove. First of all, we operate in an environment where the students and their families want to be a part of Oak Grove. Oak Grove is a school of choice. Families and students choose to be here. Oak Grove is a school of choice for teachers. The retention of our faculty from last year is about And94%.Oak Grove has this wonderful story that, in itself, reflects history in the Red River Valley. Oak Grove started in 1906 as the Oak Grove Lutheran Ladies Seminary, a high school for girls 14 years before their mothers could vote. That's pretty remarkable. This school has survived and thrived through two world wars, two global pandemics, three or more conflicts in Asia and numerous 100-year and 500-year floods of the Red River. So, Oak Grove truly is resilient. Another aspect of Oak Grove that appeals to me is the school's mission. It really focuses on nurturing students in academics, faith and service. And parts of that mission haven't changed in 100 and some years. You can go back to the school's catalog in 1908 and it talks about providing a Christian education for girls and power for good in the home, school, church or community at that time. I'm a lifelong Lutheran and I have always had this awareness of this special place that Oak Grove is within the education community. Now, obviously, the mission hasn't changed, but the ways of trying to achieve that mission as best as possible have evolved over time. What do you plan to do differently than your predecessor? And what do you plan to do to maintain the high level of academics that the school has come to be known for? Let me take this in a bit of a different direction. Oak Grove has been accredited continuously since 1926 by Cognia and its predecessor organizations. Accreditation for schools like Oak Grove assures

Did you know?

What are some of your hobbies? Like a lot of parents, I enjoyed my time with my children as they were growing up and doing their various events— whether that was music, sports or church-related activities. Family time and travel are big for me. Outside of that, I enjoy being outside and taking part in activities—whether that's biking or golf, my days of playing basketball are well behind me. My wife and I enjoy traveling and trying new restaurants. I enjoy checking out the regional history around places as well. You said you're a lifelong Lutheran- was there any point

The mission very simply states that Oak Grove nurtures students for academic achievement, Christian commitment and service to others. What that means at Oak Grove is that our curriculum, particularly for high school students, meets the standards that are expected out of any school in North Dakota. Part of that also includes a course in Christian studies every year and the expectation that you participate in our daily chapel and also in service to other people. When we were scheduling photos for this, you insisted that you be photographed with your family. How important are they to you? Absolutely very important. My wife Lisa and I have three children. Our son Paul, a graduate of South Dakota State University, works as a process engineer at Daktronics. Our daughter Maret is a graduate student in Communication Sciences at the University of North Dakota. And our daughter, Ingrid, is a student at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Both Lisa and I have invested most of our careers in education and we have always seen that [it] is a natural environment for our children. As I said earlier, I've been raised as a teacher's kid, so it's a fit for me. And we realize it with our own children, just as we do working with students at Oak Grove, or around students at colleges or universities, that each child, each young adult is different. Each of our three children have common experiences growing up but each also has his or her own strengths, his or her own interests and his or her own passions. And it's just a delight for us to watch our children learn to understand those and find those interests and passions.

parents and students [that the school has] the quality of the curriculum, the quality of instruction and the quality of educational environment necessary for Nosuccess.independent school in South Dakota or North Dakota has been accredited as long as Oak Grove has. That speaks to the academic rigor of the school. Our student's standardized test scores on North Dakota exams are higher across the board than the state average in every area. And that is an expectation at Oak Grove. For those of our readers that might be unfamiliar with faithbased learning environments, can you give them a little insight into what that looks like at Oak Grove?

Do you think your experiences as a father have helped mold how you view the academic environment? In part. I grew up as a teacher's kid. I have an awareness of what happened at that time and I remember what high school was like for me. I've invested most of my career in public higher education, as has my wife. Students, having students on campus! The hardest part about summers is that the campuses go quiet because students aren't around. I'm looking forward to welcoming our students back!

in your life where religion began to take on an increased importance? That's a great question. In addition to being a lifelong Lutheran, I would say that anyone working in a faith-based environment would tell you that it only strengthens his or her own faith. This happens because an environment like this provides an opportunity to think about one's faith front and center every day as our students do and an opportunity to work around others who have similar perspectives. What are you most excited about for the school year starting?

What else haven't we talked about that I should know?

I'm a strong believer in the role of education in shaping people. I've shared a quote I have had on my refrigerator with our staff. The quote is attributed to a national leader in education and says, "Show me a parent who really cares and I'll show you a kid who can really learn." That has resonated with me for years. So, being in an educational environment, like Oak Grove, where we have children from preschool through 12th grade with parents who are engaged in their education, just feels like a natural place for me to be.

Who said that only students can celebrate back-to-school? While the frenzy of backto-school events in the fall are the perfect way to get students excited about the upcoming school year, Bank of North Dakota's inaugural “Parent Launch Party” event is designed to help parents of high school students feel prepared, confident and knowledgeable about the next chapter of their student’s life.

FINANCIAL LITERACY FOR THE NEXT STEP

West Fargo Events and the Bank of North Dakota (BND) are hosting an educational event for the parents of Cass County students, with an emphasis on parents whose children are in their junior and senior years of high Rachelschool.

LaForce, University and Student Development Coordinator at BND, said it’s important for parents and students to know their available options for whatever they choose to do after high school, whether that is college, the military or the workforce. “Once a student has narrowed down their options, they might not know how to make it financially feasible for them,” LaForce said. “We’ve been hearing from parents that they don’t know what they should be doing to help their students, we want this event to help parents equip and educate their Fromstudents.”5:30to7:30 p.m. on August 31 at the Essentia Health Plaza at the Lights, this two-hour event will be energetic, excitementfilled and educational, while also providing food and live entertainment. Various booths will be open for parents to mingle to and from, providing a chance to talk to industry-specific professionals from BND, Dollars for Scholars, local banks and financial institutions, the North Dakota State University System and more. Parents can ask about anything from credit score to student loan options to dual credit “Aopportunities.partofour mission at BND is to help the citizens of ND to be successful, whether it’s business, agriculture or education,” Jeff Weiler, Chief Innovation Officer at BND, said. “Traditionally, when people think of college, they think about taking out a student loan— but there are other options. We’re trying to teach parents about those options, which I think fulfills our Round-robin-stylemission” activities will allow parents to talk to other parents who are going through the same learning process. They can share ideas and information with each other while getting help from those industry professionals.

The other post high school options mentioned by Weiler and LaForce for financing besides just student loans include scholarships, dual credit courses, evaluating jobs in demand, starting to save early on and more.

According to the Rockefeller Institute of Government, most high school students receive misinformation about student loans and are taught how to avoid student loan debt, rather than how to manage it. “We hope that this event gets people thinking about the financial literacy side of things, because if a student does choose to go to college, we want them to do it in a smart way,” Weiler said. “We don’t want them to take out the maximum amount of student loans and then not know how to pay them back, but to look at all the options. This event is helping to get people thinking about these things so they can start thinking about it earlier and then be successful.”

On average, each student loan borrower owes $28,950 in student loans

But Weiler, LaForce and the entire team at BND know that a traditional college route is not the right path for every student, a reason for having booths and representatives from the military, the Department of Commerce, the FMWF Chamber and ND Job Service. These booths allow parents to do things like ask questions and work through any concerns they might have about military enrollment. They can also speak with the ND Job Service to analyze which jobs are in high demand and apprenticeship opportunities their students could take advantage of. “We are bringing all of these people together in one place so that parents can get all their questions answered at one time,” LaForce said. While this event is focused on parents who have junior and senior students, parents of any high school-aged student can attend the event if they want. Learning about financial literacy and options early on is never a bad idea, no matter the age, LaForce suggests.

Business is always booming in our region. Here are just a few of the happening that you should know about.

BUSINESS

I have several bag styles that can be used as a purse and a computer bag and I just recently released a saddle bag, called “The Ashlynn”, for those that like smaller cross-body style bags. I have more styles that I’m currently designing and I can’t wait for when I can release those this fall.

Tracy Jordre began her business through the pandemic and with her background in architecture and growing up around ranching it’s like Haute Hyde is a perfect collision of creativity and experiences that led her to this. Read on for more of her story!

Tell us a bit about yourself: My name is Tracy Jordre and I live in Fargo with my husband, Kevin and our 2 kids, Cole and Annika. I grew up on a ranch near Warwick, ND and have spent the past 30 years as an Architect practicing with firms in Colorado, Georgia and North Dakota. This past spring, I made a huge change and decided to give architecture a pause as I just simply needed a mental break after a personally daunting 2021 that ended with me getting Covid on Christmas day. Throughout the pandemic, I had been having fun making bags for my friends and family, but really it was just a playful thing to do to take my mind off of the stress of all that was happening around me… but my fun, quirky hobby quickly turned into a passion and ultimately Haute Hyde Fargo was created!

W hen we stumbled upon Haute Hyde’s social media and realized she’s a local maker here in Fargo creating handcrafted leather bags we knew we needed to learn more about the maker behind them!

Describe what type of products you make? I design and create structured leather bags that I describe as “Luxuriously Simple”. I only use vegetable-tanned leather that is sourced from North American cattle and that is of the highest quality available. Being from a multigenerational ranching family, it is so important to me that American leather is used as the foundation of my products.

Tell us how you got started with creating your leather bags? A few years ago, I needed a bag that would be a purse and computer bag combo for work. I spent several hundred dollars on a couple of different designer bags that did not stand up well to use and I was very frustrated. So, I jumped on YouTube and Instagram and started following several leather makers who were creating products that I was really impressed by, and little by little, I started taking up projects that intrigued me. The next thing I knew, I had bought a leather sewing machine and a small arsenal of tools that got me started creating. Tell us about your business name? In 1994, I traveled throughout Europe as part of a study abroad program with the NDSU Architecture department and at the time, I fell in love with Hyde Park in London. In 2020, when I was trying to come up with a company name, I was intrigued by the idea of spelling a leather hide as “hyde” and it brought back so many memories of that trip and of Hyde Park. So, the name was truly inspired from that trip a few decades Also, ago.

I was very intentional in making sure that Fargo was part of my company name because that is an incredibly important part of the story. I am so proud to live in Fargo and I hope that someday this brand may allow more people to discover this incredible place that I call home.

What is your personal favorite creation so far? I think I’d get in a lot of trouble if I didn’t say that my favorite bag is “The Annika” being it’s named after my beautiful Updaughter!tothis point, my bags have been named after many of the wonderful girls in my life; my daughter, my nieces and even one of my favorite dogs. It’s been a fun way to bring my family into the mix of the business and allow them to share in the joy and successes along the way. What is something people might find surprising about working with leather or bag design?

One of the biggest challenges is to get the exact right weight and temperament of leather for the bag design. If the leather is too thick or thin by even a ½ oz, it will dramatically impact the bag and how it performs over time. 99

The complete freedom to design, to explore, to learn, to grow, to challenge, and to fail… it’s all on my own terms and I absolutely love that! What is the most challenging thing? For me, it’s making sure that I don’t forget to look up and smell the roses all around me. I can so easily get consumed by the daily production, that I lose track of the fact that I am doing this from a position of joy and not obligation. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity to redefine my terms of what a working day looks like and what I need to achieve to feel successful. It’s a very beautiful place to be in and I’m not taking it for granted!

What's the most essential thing to you in a good bag? That the person carrying the bag feels confident and beautiful. The details of what constitutes a “good bag” are as individual as the person carrying the bag, so I know that my bag designs will not be for everyone and that’s OK, but I want everyone who carries a HH bag to truly feel confident and beautiful!

What is a word that best describes you? Evolving. What advice would you have given yourself 10 years ago? To spend every single day working towards building and pursuing my dream life and not what someone else has defined that to be. Where can people find your work? Right now, my designs are all on my website. However, I'm also currently in discussions with a local retailer to start selling my bags in their store, so fingers crossed, I will have a local retail location very soon! This fall, I will also be showing at the Pride of Dakota showcases in Fargo, Bismarck and Grand Forks. Please check out my Instagram and Facebook pages as I try to provide regular updates, product features and occasional behind-thescenes videos. Learn more at hautehyde.com @hautehyde@hautehyde

Gatherings Collective:Passion With a Purpose

By Geneva Nodland Photos by Geneva Nodland eet Schneider,Lauryn a recent college graduate and new business owner stepping into her role as a local entrepreneur. Her dream of starting her business, Gatherings Collective, sparked in college while she was studying fashion at NDSU. As she worked on her senior project of creating a business, the idea of pursuing it outside of school became more Withrealistic.inspiration from this college capstone project and a collection of skills from various classes and life experiences, Lauryn began molding together her business. She began with just a retail website in the fall of 2021, then moved to pop-up events during the winter of 2022 and finally in July, opened her first storefront in downtown Fargo. While it may seem like she has achieved a final goal, like most other entrepreneurs, she feels like she’s just starting. Lauryn was heavily influenced by her childhood, where she remembers spending time with her loved ones adventuring to local garage sales, thrift stores and any other one-of-a-kind shopping stops. That, coupled with her passion for creating a more sustainable fashion industry, are what fueled Gatherings Collective. “The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world, and we really need new leaders on both a local and a global level to help change that. So the fact

that [my college program] started to incorporate that into every aspect of what we were learning was really cool,” Lauryn said. “That heightened my desire to live a more sustainable life, and all of these pieces just started to come together with this idea that I had for a thrift boutique.”

To create a shop with unique finds, that supports sustainable fashion, while still feeling like a curated and sorted place for everyone to shop was the goal for Lauryn; to get there would take time, trial and error, and passion— which Lauryn doesn’t lack. She began building her inventory with clothing, accessories and small homegood donations from family, friends, and even her own closet. Her stockpile became so large and has stayed consistent that she hasn’t had to go any other route to obtain merchandise. Everything in her shop is going from one loved home to another, and that’s part of what makes the shopping experience at Gatherings Collective so “Ispecial.tookinspiration from a consignment shop or a vintage shop that has higher quality merchandise and merchandising, where you walk in and it's a better feeling, but you still have the thrill of the hunt and the unique pieces from a thrift store,” Lauryn said. “Because that's what people love, walking in and finding things amongst the racks. But there's also something to be said for a clean environment, and having a space that doesn't feel overwhelming… I took the experiences that I've had, working in a boutique with new merchandise and combined them with the thrifting and sustainability aspect. I then just created this idea of a store and started collecting merchandise.” Since her items are secondhand, Lauryn doesn’t necessarily follow any hard fashion trends or styles in particular when going through donations. After doing a quality check to make sure they are in good condition, Lauryn said she has been lucky enough to be able to keep a lot of the items for the “I'vestore.really tried to create an eclectic mix of styles. It's really important to me to support individuality and inclusivity and fashion. And for that reason, I haven't had to be too picky… I'm really thankful that I don't have to be so specific. For example, saying that it has to be from this time period, or it has to look this certain way, be this certain color; and instead, I can just accept what comes to me and know that someone's gonna get inspiration from it,” she said. There's often a multitude of factors that play into one person's climb to the top of their ranks. We spoke with a handful of determined and successful people with ties to the Fargo-Moorhead area regarding what, and who, they believe helped them find success in the area we're proud to call home. One of the biggest pieces of advice that I’ve picked up on over the years, and could give to others, is to work harder than everybody else. I grew up working on a farm where I was picking rocks in 100-degree heat, baling hay and getting cut up pulling milkweeds; all while mosquitoes were biting me all over. That's out in the elements and you’re beating up your body doing all those tasks. I can’t take the work that I do now for granted, as it’s not nearly as hard on the body. My only job is to sit down with somebody and figure out what they care about. But I’m glad that I went through that because it gave me a work ethic that I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else. If you don’t have the drive, no matter the field you’re in, other people are going to pass you up. If you really want to be at the top, you’re going to have to work harder than everyone else. We offer a unique experience that's different from not only every other competitor out there, but also different from other State Farm offices as well. From comments on social media such as our Facebook page to Google reviews of our business, people can see that we’re taking a different path and it’s working. A lot of insurance agents offer similar pitches, and they don’t stick out from one another because of it. We like to do it differently from everybody else and we take a lot of pride in that. At the end of the day, it’s crucial to be different and hold to your values. If a process works, stick to it and don’t change it for anyone.

“We're showing State Farm that our agency is successful because we have ambitions of opening up a third agency here in the FMWF area. We already have two of them, which is less than 1% of all State Farm agents nationwide. However, the only way we can do that is by working harder and taking better care of ourcustomers than everybody else.”- Ryan Kill Ryan Kill is more than your average State Farm insurance agent. Not only is he licensed in auto, home, life, health and business insurance; he’s also licensed in both North Dakota and Minnesota. Kill launched his first location in West Fargo in 2015, with a second location in Fargo in September 2020. Kill emphasized that being a multi-office agent isn’t as common as one might think. “I believe that it’s less than 1% of the over 19,500 agents that we have at State Farm who have a multi-office agency. You don't get this opportunity unless you’re doing things the right way, taking care of policyholders the correct way and putting their needs above your own. We're pretty proud about that,” Kill said. Since the initial launch in 2015, Kill has impacted the lives of many across the greater FMWF area by assisting them through any and all insurance needs. Throughout his journey to the position he’s in today, Kill has gained a wealth of knowledge and lessons learned over his career. He elaborated on some of the advice that he believes in and attributes to some of his success.

As the economy keeps changing, the hard-working people that are going out there and trying to help more people than everybody else are going to see the most success. Even at State Farm, we have our challenges with staffing and filling positions like everybody else today. However, my staff right now realizes that their job is to impact as many people as possible. These positions have to be filled and our economy is still fluctuating, yet it’s going to change one way or another soon. If you want to take advantage of it, you're going to have to put in the work. We [at State Farm] believe that if we always make the right recommendations and do the right thing, we’ll never have to worry about looking over our shoulders. Outside of work, I think that's a good rule of thumb to follow in life in general. Almost every day, you're given opportunities to go one direction or the other. Well, if you always pick the right choice that you know is the right thing to do, then you’ll never have to worry about doing the wrong thing and making a mistake. focused on the job will pay off. you always do the right thing, you can never do the wrong thing.

"I think the biggest obstacle is that a lot of people believe that insurance is just a commodity. Across the industry, there’s a lot of marketing around price and we're very conscious of our policyholders' insurance dollars. State Farm is always going to hold us to some standard for pricing. A lot of the time we’re less expensive, and sometimes we're more expensive.

- Ryan Kill Kill understands that insurance may not be at the forefront of people’s priorities and interests. However, he hopes that an understanding perspective and passion from himself may ease customers’ minds. “Insurance may not be the most exciting topic, but it is something that people need to take a little bit of time to look at and learn from someone like myself. That's probably the thing that I've noticed the most in becoming an agent,” Kill said. “We have customers that don't have many items that require insurance, but we also deal with people that have a ton of stuff to insure. What we’ve noticed is that there's really no difference in the level of knowledge between them. Sadly, we just don't teach it as a society as much as we should. Our job as an agency is to educate and inform people on how insurance works, find out what they care about the most and make the appropriate recommendations to make sure they're covered the right way. At the end of the day, that’s what matters most.”

When asked about mentors that Kill has had throughout his journey, he was quick to cite two people that have been some of his greatest inspirations. “The first one would have to be my dad, as I got a lot of the work ethic that I have today from him,” Kill said. “I grew up in a very farm-based community in west-central Minnesota. In the mid-80s, the farm economy was absolutely terrible. It was all hands on deck when working on the farm since we needed to make sure that the farm wouldn’t go bankrupt during those times. It was successful because of the hard work that my dad showed us growing up, and it’s because of that parenting that I’m the hard worker that I am today. My dad’s in his mid-70s right now, and he's still working on the farm every single day. I can relate that to myself since my job is to do right by policyholders and continue to work for Takingthem.amore business-oriented perspective when considering other role models, Kill credits another mentor from a previous job. “The second mentor that sticks with me is Sheldon Emil, my former sales manager at [Liberty Business Systems]. He was the first one that guided and mentored me there. He taught me that you're occasionally going to run into companies that have similar products. It’s a common obstacle in many fields, but he taught me that you have to find a way to stick out from the crowd,” Kill said. “Through having a consultative approach, as well as a holistic approach, you can identify a customer’s needs and find a solution tailored to them. After doing that, they’ll buy into you and you can support one another. He also taught me that the best course of action is to be honest and upfront with people, then back up what you're saying. I have to credit him because that's how I learned to separate myself from other companies. When I came in and offered something that nobody else was able to offer, that’s when I began to make a name for myself.

A lot of people believe that all insurance agents are all the same, which they are 100% not! We joke in our office that we find it insulting if somebody says ‘Oh, you're a State Farm Agent? You're probably the exact same as my State Farm Agent.' There is a massive difference between insurance companies and insurance agents. We both might be great people with similar professions, but they're not the same as what my agency and I can offer and do differently.”'

“When it comes down to it,educating and informing ourpolicyholders and potential newpolicyholders is what makes us so different. That's the obstaclethat we love overcoming on adaily basis.”
