is the number you see on the cover of this magazine that promotes how many women leaders we showcase in this issue, but the number should be more like 400. I am convinced after putting this issue together that we need to expand on highlighting the women in our community in a monthly feature. I declare that each month in Fargo Monthly we will start highlighting a female that exceeds community expectations. Please feel free to contact us with any women that you feel should be recognized.

A FIRST FOR TWO! This month marks our first time combining two publications into one. We included the wedding guide in this issue and printed extra wedding guides as stand-alone copies.

The Wedding Issue is always a tricky one because of how robust the wedding industry is in Fargo-Moorhead. We put more time and effort into the details of the wedding issue in hopes of highlighting as much as we can for the wedding interest readers.

L

ast month was a whirlwind for us at ​Fargo Monthly​ and the rest of Spotlight Media. We managed to publish more than 500 pages during the shortest month of the year, immediately following B ​ ison Illustrated’s 212-page championship issue. Here are some other really awesome things that happened in February:

UNITED WAY’S ​35 UNDER 35​ We couldn’t have done this cover story without the unending efforts of United Way, particularly their Marketing and Brand Management Director Kristina Hein. There are few people in this world more organized than that woman, and we love her eternally for it. Check out the feature on pg. 14.

​THE WEDDING ISSUE​ Major props to Editorial Director Andrew Jason and Writer Erica Rapp for helping put out our annual wedding issue. This is

the first time we have created the issue as additional monthly content, and I think it turned out pretty great. (Don’t forget to check it out at the end of the magazine, even if you aren’t getting married any time soon!) More props to our lovely, talented and patient designers.

​NEW FACES​ We’ve expanded the design team to include a third full-time designer, Ryan Koehler and design intern Billy Schnase.

We also welcomed account manager Tank McNamara to the team. They all came in on the verge of this crazy month with great attitudes and impressive portfolios to boot.

​#JAFA2015​ Associate Publisher Tracy Nicholson and I snuck away from the office for a few hours to judge Josef ’s 10th Annual Fashion Awards. (See the pictures on pg.

54) We had a blast and were honored to be a part of it. We’ll be back next year; if not as judges, as audience members.

“Change, even a positive change like growth, can be challenging. But the ability to see the big picture, understanding the reasons behind the change, knowing how my position fits in to build up our teams and products in a positive way and keeping in mind how it all benefits the company – ultimately makes change exciting.”

Working for an organization that empowers women, who has empowered you throughout your life?

“While many have been empowering, I worked on a few projects with a mentor, Dr. Carol Lewis, the associate director of the Center for Social Work Research at the University of Texas at Austin. She taught me a great deal about leadership and helped me discover my unique strengths.”

THE CONNECTOR SHER THOMSEN President of United Way of Cass-Clay

S

her Thomsen spent a lot of her life on the road.

Originally from Perham, Minn., she received her bachelor’s degree in Maine before moving to California, Louisiana and several other places for work. Once she and her husband began thinking about children, their sights turned back to the area and they moved to Fargo.

For the last 17 years, Thomsen has been in nonprofit leadership. Her nonprofit experience began by volunteering at a humane society in Maine and took off from there.

Thomsen was the regional executive director for the American Red Cross when she moved to Fargo and was soon asked to be part of the United Way of Cass-Clay.

“There’s different states and different industries in my background, but the one thing that is consistent is that it’s been in nonprofit leadership and it’s been in a time during change management or transition management,” Thomsen said.

When she joined, the Board of United Way was planning on changing its investment strategy. Her experience allowed her to develop a strategy and implement a plan in a collaborative approach. Each year the United Way team continues to grow, raising $5.5 million in the 2014 campaign.

“Oftentimes when people think of United Way, they think of the worldwide brand, but the thing that I like for people to think about when they hear United Way is that it’s about people,” Thomsen said. “I know that sounds very simplistic, but it is true. It’s about the people who volunteer for us. It’s about the people who invest in us. And most importantly it’s about the people we serve.”

Right now, United Way works with 3,000 volunteers. With a staff of only 11 people, it can be tough to manage such a large group, but Thomsen has handled this quite effectively.

“Someone once said that good leaders have two ears and one mouth and know how to use them proportionally,” she said. “Yes, as the leader of an organization, I need to determine the vision and set the strategy, so I’m talking a lot. I’m also listening a lot. …Effective leadership is finding the balance between leading, listening and learning.”

“One of the biggest challenges we face is keeping up with regulation changes.

We need to make sure our team members are knowledgeable and informed of the changes, as well as engaged in their work. I find that engaged team members have a tendency to place a higher value on staying current with these important changes.”

“I am the Risk Manager at Northern Improvement Company. I deal with property and casualty insurance as well as workers’ compensation for the company. I started with Northern Improvement 12 years ago in the shop. Hard work, dedication and a positive attitude turned a summer job into a career.”

“Marie Curie. As the first female to win a Nobel Prize and the only female to win two, her research, discoveries and enthusiasm for science laid a solid foundation for women like myself in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related fields.”

“Faith community nursing is a relatively new specialty in nursing and it’s an underutilized resource. As a leader in the profession, I strive to provide education and share how faith community nursing can make an impact in our community and health systems.”

Why is it important to maintain an upbeat personality working in your field?

“At Hospice, we work with individuals facing very serious challenges in their lives. Staying positive, approachable, compassionate and caring helps us develop trusting, solid relationships with each other and our patients and their families— allowing us to provide the best care and the most value to them.”

What is one piece of advice you consistently give to students when they embark on their careers?

“I advise students to recognize what skills they possess and understand how those skills will benefit future employers. They also need to learn how to initiate and sustain relationships inside and outside of their industry.

Networking is vital in today’s job market.”

“It is important as a female leader to foster a work environment that is mutually respectful.

Respecting each others’ differences and unique talents has been the lowest common denominator of the great teams I have had the honor to be a part of.”

“My dream dinner companion would be Bette Davis. She challenged traditions of beauty both in appearance and her brash acting style, which I admire. She also cofounded the Hollywood Canteen, offering food and entertainment for servicemen and was the first female president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.”

“I am a REALTOR at Keller Williams Roers Realty. I chose to work at Keller Williams based on their belief system of God first, family second and business third. I love it here because of the great culture, award winning training and my incredibly talented team, The Red Key Group.”

THE AUTHENTIC Michelle Killoran CFO/Vice President of Finance at Scheels All Sports

T

hese days, 15 years is a long time to spend with a company. Michelle Killoran started working parttime in the corporate office at Scheels her senior year at Concordia College and began working fulltime after graduating with a degree in business.

She has worked her way up the corporate ladder to her role as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Finance. What is it about Scheels that has kept her there, though?

“What don’t I love?” Killoran said with a laugh. “It sounds cliché, but I love the people. … Just the values of the company and the strong family-based business. … It’s employee-owned and being employee-owned makes a huge difference, just in the culture of the company.”

Killoran has worked for all the success she’s achieved.

Starting off in her career, she worked a lot and wasn’t as involved in the community, but after some persuasion from Scheels Chairman Steve D. Scheel, she became more involved. In 2012 she was the campaign chair and helped raise $5.1 million for United Way of Cass-Clay. She currently serves as treasurer and sits on the Board of Directors.

“Not only did it help me grow as a leader, but it helped me grow as a person just to have my eyes opened to everything United Way does,” Killoran said.

According to the Center for American Progress, although women hold 52 percent of all professional-level jobs, women only make up 14.6 percent of executive officers and hold 16.9 percent of Fortune 500 board seats.

Having an upper echelon position in a company can be a lonely world for women. While Killoran hasn’t ever felt disadvantaged, she does have good advice for other women in leadership roles.

“The one thing that I’ve held true through my career is being true to my authentic self,” Killoran said. “I think that’s so important, and it’s not just specific to the industry that I am in, but leadership as a whole.”

Talk about your role at Western State Bank.

“I serve as the Vice President/Sales and Marketing Director.

I work with all departments of the company and focus on marketing and online strategies, communications and product development.

I like to think that I help create solutions – this may include working with current team members, customers or community members.”

Why did you get involved in the March of Dimes?

“I love the March of Dimes because it is one of the few nonprofits that truly impacts everyone.

Whether you were born healthy, or needed a little bit of help – they were there. So not only am I working to give every baby the healthiest start possible, but I’m working for a healthier future for our community.

If you’ve had a baby, know a baby or been a baby – then you’ve been impacted by the March of Dimes and to me that’s pretty amazing.”

THE COMMUNICATOR Denise Kolpack Senior Vice President of Communications, Public Affairs and Strategy at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota

D

enise Kolpack has always been an inquisitive person. That may be one of her strongest traits, which has helped Kolpack throughout her career considering everything she has been able to accomplish.

“I think I’ve always been excited about learning new things,” she said. “I am energized by having flexibility in my day and doing new things every day and that’s certainly the position I’m in.”

Graduating with a marketing and political science degree from the University of North Dakota, Kolpack began to traverse the state. After graduating from UND, she moved to Bismarck to work for the North Dakota Newspaper Association. She worked at various jobs but her big break came in 2000 when she ran the campaign for Heidi Heitkamp’s gubernatorial bid. While she initially felt she wasn’t qualified, Heitkamp convinced her otherwise.

“I’ve learned over the years that you should never say no just because you don’t know how to do it,” Kolpack said.

“In fact, that’s when you should do it. I was a little nervous taking on the responsibility. I had never been in the middle of politics like that. … When she (Heitkamp) asked me to run her campaign, my first answer was no and then she talked me into it and it was one of the best experiences of my life.”

Kolpack quickly learned the importance of networking, especially in a state as small as North Dakota. This is something that she practices in her life. Last year she joined the Board of Directors for the United Way. She recognizes the importance of having a networking event specifically for women, like 35 Under 35.

“I think women can get a lot of energy from other women,” she said. “At the same time, I’ve always worked with a lot of men as well and I’ve never seen a difference. I think if you show up and do the work, prepare and are respectful of your colleagues and you know what you’re doing, that is you invest the time to learn your industry and your organization – gender doesn’t really matter.”

There are a lot of females in leadership roles at Sanford.

Tell us about your experience working with the team there.

North Dakota is one of the fastest growing states in the number of women business owners. Why do you think that is?

Bell State Bank is known for their philanthropic efforts. why is it important for employers to give back to their communities?

“It is important for employers to be a support system for the people and organizations in need in their communities. Giving back monetarily and through time not only helps others, but also deepens relationships among employees and strengthens the company’s culture.”

Why is Jeremiah Program so important?

“Currently, 3,300 children in Fargo are living in poverty with a single mother. I receive calls weekly from local mothers looking for support. Other calls are from community members wondering how they can help break the cycle of poverty for these young women.

Jeremiah Program’s model is unique, comprehensive and sustainable and can effectively transform families in our area from poverty to prosperity.”

“I’ve learned it’s OK to be yourself. These women embrace you for exactly who you are.

There are no alternative motives or jealousy; simply, a genuine desire to support each other.

It’s a remarkable feeling.”

“I’ve been fortunate to work with a number of very talented, motivated and creative individuals during my time at Sanford. THE people person tonya stende President of Dale Carnegie Training of North Dakota

T

onya Stende wasn’t your typical CPA. After about seven years she realized that she liked her clients more than the actual number game. Her boss and former CEO at Eide Bailly, Darold Rath, saw it, too. One day, he approached Stende with an opportunity to get involved with the Dale Carnegie franchise.

“At the time, I didn’t really know what Dale Carnegie was,” said Stende. “He saw different strengths in me than I knew I had. I thought, ‘Absolutely. I don’t know exactly what it is, but I’m going to do it.’”

Around 2000, Stende launched the franchise for North Dakota and part of Minnesota. She and her team at Dale Carnegie Training help companies align their business strategies and people practices to drive results. They focus on improving company culture and getting employees more engaged.

“Over the last three years, one of the things that Dale Carnegie has done a lot of research on, which is really exciting for us because it’s a passion of mine and our team, is employee engagement,” she said. “Really focusing on how employees can be more focused on their role, their team and with their clients.”

They do a host of other things with businesses, from presentation coaching to developing sales and leadership competencies. About 70 percent involves in-house work with organizations and the rest is in the public realm — a significant change from being 100 percent publicly driven when they began.

The passion she has for her job is palpable. She found her calling in Dale Carnegie Training where she can capitalize on one of her greatest strengths: being a people person.

“Do what you love and love what you do. If you love what you do, you’re more curious, you ask more questions, you’re more engaged,” she said. “It’s easier when you align your careers with your core values.”

Stende has been involved with another passion for a long while: United Way. Next year she’s been tasked with heading the annual United Way Campaign, which raised $5.5 million in 2014.

As part of the Women’s Leadership Council, she was there for the inception of 35 Under 35 seven years ago. She was never able to partake in the program itself, but she sees the significant impact it’s had on so many women.

ver the last two decades, Tammy Miller has climbed the ladder at Border States Electric from accounting manager to CEO. She has helped build and is running a multi-billion dollar company with nearly 2,000 employee-owners, in 80 locations in 16 states. The company’s employee base is dramatically larger than Miller’s hometown of Brocket, N.D., with a population of only 57 people.

Growing up in a small town gave Miller an incredible amount of opportunities.

“Because of the limited population I was always needed to play in the band, round out a team, or help with an event. I had so many opportunities to try new things, it was a confidence builder and reinforced risk taking,” It also rooted in her a sense of philanthropy, which she attributes greatly to her parents.

“My parents were fine role models. Whenever there was a need in our community, my parents were the first to volunteer,” said Miller.

“Giving back is in my DNA.” That core value of giving back is also part of the culture at Border States Electric. Employee-owners are encouraged to find ways to support their communities. “Success comes with great responsibility,” said Miller. “One of our core values at Border States is to give back and enhance the quality of life in the communities where we live and work. I am so proud to lead the employeeowners of Border States.”

Miller believes that volunteering is a great way to make a positive difference, network and acquire new skills. “Your area of expertise might be accounting, but working with a nonprofit, you may be able to volunteer in other areas like events, marketing or human resources,” she said. “Volunteering can give you a well-rounded experience that may help your career.”

Miller has been involved in the United Way since before starting at Border States Electric in 1991 and served as the campaign chair in 2010. Her passion for wellness and exercise was what drew Miller toward leading local capital campaign efforts for Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Wellness Center and TNT Kid’s Fitness.

Her strength in strategic planning and execution led her to serve as co-chair for the Valley Prosperity Project, working to develop a comprehensive economic development plan for the Red River Valley region of North Dakota and Minnesota.

“I had great advice from my mentor, Paul Madson. He said only agree to serve if you are so passionate about the organization that you would agree to be the board chair,” Miller said. “I continue to use Paul’s advice as I decide where I’m going to share my resources and time.”

Last month the FargoMoorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce kicked off the inaugural Women Connect. This event brought national speaker Lynette Lewis to talk about pursuing your dreams in business. Women Connect is a new monthly meetup aimed at connecting, inspiring and growing a community for women in business.

“We heard from a number of our members,” said Chamber President/CEO Craig Whitney. “There was a demand for some type of an opportunity for women to come together to have a speaker and then have the opportunity to socialize, interact and network with each other.”

Only about 14 percent of executive office positions are held by women and make 77 cents to every dollar a man makes. The events will run through August and focus on making women the leaders that they already are.

“Women are leaders inherently,” said Whitney.

“They’re leaders of their family, house and at work.

They also need to balance being involved civically in the community. … I think these monthly opportunities will be talking about the challenges with how you balance home and work and throwing into the mix the civic responsibilities of being a leader in the community.”

Joe Dretsch and Lars Hegland had been friends for years and playing in other area bands before they united under one act. In 2009, Dretsch was signed by an agency out of Nashville to play acoustic

Finally, Hegland agreed to play half a set with Dretsch, decided that it was a pretty fun time and the Lars and Joe Pony show was officially born in August 2012. With their acoustic guitars and a cajón, the duo has been belting out your favorite songs ever since.

as an “acoustic comedy show” and they thrive on crowd interaction. So if you’re really in the mood to hear a Britney Spears song and these guys know how to play it, you won’t be disappointed.

“Our biggest strength is that nothing is off limits,” said Hegland. “We don’t really go by a set list, and we take any sort of request. We’re not really afraid to do anything.”

The duo has grown to have a decent-sized following that always comes out for their shows, which is something that the two are more than grateful for. They claim that they constantly get messages asking when the next “pony show” is, and the bar owners definitely don’t complain about the business it brings in, either.

“We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without our friends and the people that follow us,” stated Hegland. “We’re not in this for money. We want to help the business out, and we just like to play music and have a good time with everyone.”

THAT CATCHY RHYME WHEN’S THE PONY SHOW? It’s the perfect match. Hegland’s musical taste is on the pop/punk/hip-hop side while Dretsch leans toward rock and country. Together, they’re able to perform hits of all genres to please even the toughest of crowds.

Speaking of crowds, you’ll want to be a part of theirs. Their friends describe them

You’re probably wondering where that clever rhyme of a name came from. For their first show together, Dretsch sat down to make an event page on Facebook and had no idea what to call their act.

After their first show together, sticking with a name wasn’t hard at all. Two of their friends showed up with unicorns on sticks, and although they were meant to be ponies, the duo was roped into the Lars and Joe Pony Show and the name stuck.

KEEP IT COMING With Hegland being busy with his main band, Tripwire, since 2010 and Dretsch formally playing in 8th Hour and now in Redline, the two have occasionally had to put the pony show on the backburner. That won’t stop them from bringing a fun time as the Lars and Joe Pony Show, though.

Although they’ll stick to playing cover sets around the area, the duo has not put the thought of writing original music and touring out of their mind.

“There’s not really much of a scene for our kind of thing here,” Dretsch said.

“If we can create a demand for it, then we’d be all about it. It’s something that we definitely think about.”

Get ready to laugh a lot and sing (or boogie) your heart out, because catching one of these shows will be something you’ll thank yourself for.

“It had to be Lars and Joe plus something else. I thought we’d just go with the Pony Show and next time we’ll go with the Dog Show, and then maybe the dog and pony show,” explained Dretsch.

What is It?

The top 16 teams in Division 1 men’s hockey compete over the course of two days for a chance to get to this year’s Frozen Four in Boston, Mass., on April 9 and 11. Four of the 16 teams will play at the West Regionals in Fargo’s Scheels Arena.

Why is It a Big Deal?

In the words of UND Associate Athletic Director for External Operations Kyle Doperalski, “Any time you can get an NCAA event in your community, that’s going to do a lot and create a lot of excitement.” To make matters cooler, there are only 16 teams that make the tournament, compared to 68 in D1 men’s basketball. That means there are only four regional tournament locations, and Fargo is one of them.

This event also has the potential for major economic impact on area restaurants, hotels and stores.

Why Fargo and Not Grand Forks?

Doperalski explained that the NCAA has gravitated toward neutral tournament sites over the last few years. Since UND has a D1 hockey team, that took the Ralph Engelstad Arena out of the running.

Are There Tickets Left?

All 5,000 seats (which include standing room only general admission) sold out shortly after the tournament was announced. First priority went to the North Dakota Champions Club, UND Athletics’ annual giving program that provides scholarship and program funding to student-athletes. They also had to hold seats for participating teams.

What is the Scheels Arena Doing to Prepare?

All hands will be on deck that week, including a full staff of ushers, parking attendants, full and part-time employees and interns.

Their facilities staff will be working, quite literally, around the clock leading up to the tournament. Some of their many tasks will include shaving the ice, removing the Fargo Force logos, replacing them with NCAA and team logos and resurfacing the ice.

“I’ve got to give some good props to our facility guys because a lot of times they’re behind the scenes; they don’t get the credit,” Deutsch said. “But they’ve done a wonderful job here making sure the arena is kept up, it’s clean (and) the ice is going to be in great condition.”

ew things are more quintessentially Fargo than the eye-catching marquee and blinking lights of the Fargo Theatre. What began as a vaudeville theatre has slowly evolved over the last century to come full circle, once again standing as a prime venue for film and live acts.

has a voice,” said Bailly. “You sit in Since 1926 the Fargo Theatre has gone through the ups and downs with the rest of the city, standing tall as a symbol of Fargo-Moorhead. When it opened its doors, patrons could enjoy a silent movie or a vaudeville performance.

Over the following decades, the Mighty Wurlitzer organ went obsolete with the exit of silent films. The building underwent several renovations, never straying too far from its “Art Moderne” design and eventually landing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. By that time, the illustrious pipe organ had made its return for annual silent movie nights, and the theatre soon became a revival house for classic, foreign and second-run films.

In the early ‘90s a woman by the name of Margie Bailly arrived on the scene.

She, like most people, was captivated by the Fargo Theatre and all of its charm, making her way from board member to Executive Director in 1997.

“I think buildings have a voice. They truly do, and the Fargo Theatre definitely

there and you can just hear the spirits talking to you. That’s why any kind of an experience in there, a film experience or a live experience, is so unique and special.

It’s unique, special, creative — it’s just filled with creative energy.”

Bailly made it her mission to preserve that energy and keep the community engaged, heading up several milestone projects like the Fargo Film Festival, a $3 million renovation and the addition of a second screen.

​On being the only local cinema to show "The ​​ Interview" after film distribution was canceled at mainstream theaters: “I remember being kind of disappointed when they canceled the distribution of that film because for me, in my gut, that did not seem like the right thing to do. Everyone here loved the opportunity to say, ‘Yes, we’re going to show this film.

We’re happy to give this film a home and let people in the community who want to see it, see it.’ That felt good.”

“It was the perfect project for me. I’m kind of a risk-taker anyway,” she said with a laugh. “I love historic preservation and I think it’s really, really, really important. In 2011, she passed the torch to Emily Beck, who Bailly described as a perfect successor and her partner in crime.

The passion the two of them have for the Fargo Theatre is indisputable, each propelling the theatre forward as audience levels grow.

Much of their audience boost can be attributed to the second screen, which opened in 2009 and seats 75. It’s given them greater flexibility in booking movies and events and has allowed them to keep the Fargo Film Festival in one central location.

“I really can’t oversell the importance of that space; it’s been really wonderful for the theatre,” said Beck. “… On nights that we do have a concert or a live event in the main screen, we don’t have to stop our film programming, which make us a much more appealing aspect for booking

To Bailly, the two businesses grew up together and have evolved essentially in tandem — as the theatre has come into its own, so too has Jade Presents.

“I think it has grown up just wonderfully,” said Bailly. “It’s really not grown up; it has, what should I say?

The event producers continue reeling in more talent to the Fargo Theatre, from comedians and bands to their most recent endeavor: an illusionist.

So you’re headed back to Fargo. What do you think of our little town?

A:

“I love Fargo. It’s awesome. I live in St. Paul so it feels kind of like home to me.”

You were born in Hawaii and grew up in Pittsburgh, right? Why did you pick Minneapolis as your base?

“I moved to Minnesota when I was 19. … I was traveling a bunch, and when I first came up to Minneapolis I went to Uptown for the first time and I just felt totally at home there. I checked out a bunch of venues and stuff and it was amazing to me the amount of live music places there were in Minneapolis and St. Paul that catered to people that made their own music and wrote their own songs; it wasn’t all just cover band stuff. I felt like it was a really good

Q:

My understanding is that you kind of locked yourself up and really took time to develop “Always Been.” Why is that?

A:

“The last few records I was recording at the same time I was writing, so it was sort of a little bit different process. I would take a couple years on a record but the songs when they first get written, they would get recorded like right away. So everything was always sort of being recorded at the same time it was being written, and for this one, I kind of got overwhelmed with having so many versions of songs that were actually recorded. It was hard to tell what songs were in the process and what songs were actually finished, and so for this one I just tried to separate the process. I made the writing its own process and made sure that the songs got really finished before I recorded them with the band or I recorded them in any sort of proper way that would actually sound like a finished record. So

GO A&E I just sort of separated it. As technology gets more easy to use, it’s sometimes hard to make sure that enough attention goes into the songwriting part before you start recording.”

Q:

A:

You’ve talked a lot about other musicians who inspired you for this album and just in general.

If you had to pick your greatest inspiration right now, who would it be?

“That’s a tough one, let me think. … I just got a stack of CDs yesterday from different people. I like the new D’Angelo record a lot. I like the (latest) War on Drugs record. I like Kanye West’s stuff he’s been doing with Paul McCartney. It always sort of changes.”

Q:

How have you evolved as an artist over the years?

A:

“… Similarly to how I’ve evolved as a person, I think now I feel like I have a better understanding of how I work with other people, like through more collaborations. I did a collaboration this year with Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam, and that was really fun to do a 7-inch with him. Just trying to open up to the idea of working more with other people, which has been fun.”

Q:

Can we talk about “How I Met Your Mother” for a second? One of your songs, “Just Try,” was featured on the show last season.

What was that like for you?

A:

“It was cool. I had never seen that show before. I’ve had songs on a bunch of different TV shows over the years, and … usually what happens with those kinds of things, it doesn’t get picked for a TV show until the day before or a couple days before the TV show airs which is pretty funny. So a lot of times I don’t know it’s going to be on and then I’m getting texts from a bunch of people during the show which is always really funny because (I’m like), ‘What are you talking about?’ And then you find out like a week later, often, that your song was on the show. It’s pretty surreal.

There’s not really any formula for it. It’s not really something you can aim for or know that it’s going to happen, but then it’s always fun when it does.”

Q:

Did you ever expect that kind of success?

A:

“For me, I just love making music, so I don’t really think about it in those terms.

I’m just really excited that I get to make records and make songs. That feels like success to me.”

Q:

If you hadn’t become a musician, what was your backup plan?

A:

“I dropped out of high school so I didn’t really have a net. Something creative.

Maybe some sort of teaching in some way. I’m a big fan of literature.”

Q:

What are you looking forward to the most this year? Any plans for another album?

A:

“I’m definitely starting to write some more.

I just got a new studio and it’s a different kind of place to work, which is exciting for me because usually a lot of times wherever I’m working influences the stuff that comes up. I’m definitely writing and (I’m) heading out next month, going to Florida for some shows. It’ll be fun to come up to Fargo and Duluth. I always look forward to those places because it feels like (a) hometown, even though it’s a little bit far away from where I actually live. It’s the northern Midwest, so I enjoy it.”

MUSIC SPOTLIGHT The Good Old Days Are Here Right Now

I

n the 10 years I’ve lived in FargoMoorhead, I’ve heard some variation of this statement more times than I can count (terrible math skills notwithstanding). No matter the year, this is a conversation I eventually end up in sooner or later. Somehow, the golden era for [insert genre] passed years ago (despite no one remembering that people made the same complaints back then, too).

The math behind that sentiment, however, obviously doesn’t add up. While your opinion on the quality of our city’s musical offerings will depend on your taste (and I should mention mine lean toward punk and indie rock), on a long enough timeline, it’s impossible for any particular niche to have perpetually been better in the past. Things do come and go in waves, and personal taste being what it is, I don’t want to outright dismiss anyone’s opinion that things were better in [insert year].

However, I will counter argue that FargoMoorhead is overall in a stronger position to succeed as a city for music now than it ever has been.

For evidence, look at how much is going on in terms of the number of active local bands, venues in operation and touring acts coming through our city. We can start with what’s happening downtown.

The New Direction, an all-ages punk venue once in danger of closing its doors, now consistently brings in a solid stream of young bands. The Aquarium hosts everything from indie rock to bluegrass to EDM each week, often packing diverse crowds to see bands that would play much larger venues (and higher ticket prices) in any larger city.

Live jazz is a regular event at Studio 222.

The Red Raven frequently hosts singersongwriters and quieter acts of all sorts.

The Fargo Theatre also hosts some cool shows from time to time too (I’ll see you at the Spoon show in May).

Elsewhere around town, Jade Presents continues to bring major metal, rock, hip hop and other genres to town (although the closing of the The Venue/ House Of Rock may be a strike against my case). Jazz, classical and other styles have an established presence on all three major college campuses in the area.

And of course, if you want to see cover bands, there are plenty of hard-working musicians playing bars all over the city.

You can fill in your own blanks for what I’ve forgotten here.

On the largest end of the scale, 2014 saw the FargoDome play host to everyone from Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry – arguably three of the most mega of mega stars – while they’re still culturally relevant and before they’re washed up on the state fair circuit. Even if you don’t care for mainstream radio pop (and I’d rather eat glass than put that in my ears), this is an indicator that our city may finally be shedding its national perception as a money-losing hole-in-the-ground and gaining an identity as a vibrant, growing city worth playing.

And that applies whether you’re talking about basement hardcore shows or arena pop spectacles.

This is a much different scenario than when I first came here for college in 2004, where my personal favorite bands almost never came through town, large concerts were fewer and farther between and the general sentiment was that supporting a meaningful music culture of almost any kind here was damned to be an uphill battle.

It still is to an extent, but we’ve come a long way since The Forum​ran an article in 2006 or 2007 (I can’t track down the story, so I’m operating from memory here) questioning Fargo-Moorhead’s ability to support touring acts following a woefully under-attended Wilco show. My recollection isn’t super sharp, but I remember national promoters cited as calling our town something to the effect of a C-list touring destination.

Now, though? We’re at least a solid B+ with room for improvement. Fargo-Moorhead is growing and rewards those who work hard. If you can’t find the music you want here, keep in mind that anything of musical significance that’s taken root in this area – from DIY punk to WE Fest – has been the product of a small group of people getting the ball rolling and creating what they wanted to see.

Whether you want to help build the future, or live in a past that never really was, is up to you.

This show brought students from all three campuses of Josef's School of Hair Design together at the Avalon West for a night of fun, fashion and hair design.

We sat down with Marketing Director Trisha McDonald and Special Needs & Fitness Team Leader Adam Jore to discover what TNT is all about.

NT Kid’s Fitness and Gymnastics goes far beyond anything of its kind. The gym recently announced a major expansion project that will be one-of-a-kind to the nation and it’s all for a good cause. We sat down with Marketing Director Trisha McDonald and Special Needs & Fitness Team Leader Adam Jore to discover what TNT is all about.

Through a partnership with United Way, TNT is able to bring in over 21 area schools and their adaptive physical education groups for physical movement opportunities. They utilize anything from trampolines to obstacle courses in order to give every child the right of movement, regardless of their limitations.

“We’re providing movement to individuals based on their needs. We help kids of all kinds no matter what their ability is,” explained Jore. “We want to make it a fun and inviting atmosphere to show kids that movement is exciting and enjoyable.”

TNT recently announced that they will be expanding their facilities and collaborating with the Anne Carlsen Center and Haley’s Hope to have three organizations under one roof. With TNT educating on movement, the Anne Carlsen Center guiding individuals with occupational and physical therapy needs and Haley’s Hope helping those with Dyslexia – the new all-abilities center will be able to

The expansion will also be the home of the first public sensory gym in the nation, which is an exciting feature. It will also include a special needs fitness gym for adults and children, along with a childcare center focused on fitness and healthy lifestyles. McDonald explained that the children were truly the big winners with the plans for expansion.

“We currently have 25 area organizations that come in and use our space right now, and everything that we do is because of the collaborations and the partnerships of the community,” said McDonald. “We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without it.”

Aside from tailoring classes to people of all kinds, TNT has a firm grasp on helping children and adults outside of their own

facility. Jore explained that they partner with the area’s colleges and universities to have students work under their wing and learn from each other. They also provide movement education to outside daycare and childcare groups with their Outreach Mobile Movement program, so that they can serve children who wouldn’t normally have proper access to fitness.

It’s clear that people of all ages and types are welcome here – regardless of physical, cognitive, emotional or behavioral limitations.

Healthy lifestyle and positive mental attitude are important to the staff at TNT, and they are dedicated to sharing that with everyone. Every child deserves to feel confident and fearless, and TNT Kid’s Fitness and Gymnastics is here to make that happen.

he country’s fastest growing demographic in poverty is single women with young children, and Fargo-Moorhead is no exception.

There are currently close to 2,400 single mothers in the metro who are living in poverty with their children — but a growing nonprofit by the name of Jeremiah Program Fargo-Moorhead is preparing to give these women a chance to move from poverty to prosperity.

“We have other services and programs in the community that address other women in other situations,” said the program’s Executive Director Diane Solinger. “We specifically address single moms with young children. The goal is to break the cycle: break the cycle for the mom and then break the cycle for the small children.”

One of the largest hurdles for mothers in poverty is safe, affordable housing for their family. At a reduced cost, they live in an apartment on the Jeremiah campus. The location for Fargo-Moorhead’s campus has been selected, but will be announced later this year. Solinger hopes for the groundbreaking to happen this fall, and the campus is slotted to open by August 2016.

HISTORY Jeremiah Program began in Minneapolis over 15 years ago and has since expanded into Saint Paul, Minn., Austin, Texas, and Boston, Mass., with various campuses and pilot programs.

The women must complete a nine-week Empowerment Course before they ever apply. Office and Program Administrator Amanda Volmer attributes the nonprofit’s success to this empowerment program.

What distinguishes F/M Communiversity from other programs of its kind is that it offers college-like courses where people can learn from area professors and other experts. The greatest part about it (aside from the no homework aspect) is the conversation that takes place.

Everyone enjoys being there, and the dialogue that happens between the participants and the faculty is really something special.

Everyone has this opportunity through a program that’s been around for 50 years and it’s called F/M Communiversity. Director of the program, Susan Wee, was able to give us a little bit of insight on what it’s all about.

F/M Communiversity is a program offered through Concordia College and in cooperation with North Dakota State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead to bring lifelong learning to the community. Since 1965, the program has offered educational opportunities to people of all kinds.

Wee’s role is to keep the program going. She works with marketing to make sure that everyone knows about F/M Communiversity, and she also recruits those who teach the classes. She helps

Giving The Gift of Time Eight years ago Bonnie Fritz saw an ad in the paper. The YWCA was calling for volunteers to help with their Unique Boutique, an annual Christmas event where current and former residents can shop, at no cost, for their families.

They are now jacks-of-all-trades for the crisis shelter. Most of their time is spent organizing the endless stream of food donations, but their repertoire includes decorating for special events, organizing the blanket and makeup rooms and filling in wherever is needed.

MAGINE GETTING FROM POINT A TO POINT B without getting in your car — (goodbye, parking tickets) — all while enjoying the sights and smells of the city. It’s been a long time coming, but that will soon be a reality thanks to Great Rides Bike Share.

In October 2011, former NDSU Student Body President Cam Knutson sat down with his team and City Commissioner Mike Williams to hash out how the campus could be more integrated with the rest of Fargo. When Williams planted the bikeshare seed, the rest was history.

Research, Research, Research

Knutson and other NDSU student government representatives spent more than a year researching other bikeshare programs, one of which is in Minneapolis. They saw the systems firsthand and picked the brains of Nice Ride Minnesota to find out what worked and what didn’t work.

Being Minneapolis is significantly larger than Fargo, how could a bikeshare possibly work here?

“We started to recognize that the campus and downtown being about a seven-minute bike ride away,” Knutson said, “are extremely dense and are just as dense as other major cities that have the program.”

The Next Step

Another year and a half was spent tackling the next issue: fundraising. Not many people have had a chance to see bikeshare programs firsthand, particularly because they’re still so new — Minneapolis’ program launched in 2010.

The bikes themselves were not inexpensive, either, but Knutson and Director of Operations Sara Watson Curry stressed that these bikes are of exceptional quality. Not to mention that once Old Man Winter strikes, the fleet of bicycles will head into hibernation with Great Northern Bicycle Company.

“The good part about the winter,” said Knutson, “we get them off the road during the harshest time of year, give them a full tune up and it just increases our longevity of not needing to go back and buy more bikes or buy more stations in the near future.”

Seasonal bike shares are not uncommon. In fact, Knutson said around 60 percent of bikeshares in North America are seasonal, including several across the upper Midwest.

Scattered across downtown Fargo and NDSU’s campus will be 11 docking stations loaded with 101 bikes. Those enrolled in the program will receive an ID card of sorts. With a swipe of the card, the stations recognize you and track your bike in real time until you get to the next docking point.

To ensure a safe return of the bikes in reasonable time, there is a 30-minute cap per ride. After that, a $1 charge will incur for the next 30 minutes and $2 for each half hour after that.

“The nice part is if you wanted to ride longer than 30 minutes, you could ride for 29 minutes anywhere you want and then all you have to is dock it and then you can recheck it out right away,” Knutson said. “So with a membership card it literally takes a second to dock, swipe and then go again.”

Every NDSU student is automatically enrolled in the program, which will put Great Rides on the map as the second largest bike share in the nation right off the bat.

Watson Curry, director of operations, is sure that this program will invigorate the community, upping Fargo’s status as a bike-friendly community.

“It’s going to enhance the quality of life of our citizens, of our students. It’s going to connect people,” she said. “One of the reasons I love bikes is they always make you feel so much more connected.

When you’re in a car, you can get places pretty quick, you can be comfortable, you can crank up your own music.

But a bike really connects you to the community.”

Not to mention that cyclists are what she called “economic generators.” The likelihood of someone stopping in a local business while biking past as opposed to driving by is a no-brainer.

Expansion

While no official plans are in the works to expand the program across the river, it’s likely inevitable. The “petri dishes of density”, downtown and near NDSU, exist similarly at Minnesota State University Moorhead and Concordia College.

“The golden rule that we follow with bike share is that once you start, these systems always grow,” Knutson said.

For now, Great Rides needs the community’s support and butts in the seats — just don’t forget to wear a helmet.

Downtown Fargo’s Fastest Growing Economic Force:

he popular conception that women are the most underutilized economic asset in the world certainly doesn’t hold true for the women of Downtown Fargo. In fact, in a recent study North Dakota was ranked No. 1 as the fastest-growing state in numbers, employment and revenue of womenowned businesses from 1997 to 20141.

All throughout the Midwest, women are quickly bridging the entrepreneur gender gap, and they’re not slowing down any time soon.

I’m sure I’m not the first to recognize this continual growth of womenowned businesses scattered throughout downtown. As multiple stores are implemented each year, you can truly feel the passion and dedication behind each of them as you browse from store to store. What drives these women to such success and growth? They, among other entrepreneurial women around the world, are making it clear they want to put themselves above the traditional mindset of the maledominated business world.

the last two months I’ve been fortunate to get to know some of these leading ladies, and they deserve to be recognized. Among the many that stand out to me are two that I see consistent leadership and determination from: Christine Jaeger of Buyer at Large and Josie Danz of Zandbroz Variety.

She comes from a background of entrepreneurs; her dad and her grandfather both owned their own companies.

After working in retail for several years and managing merchandising at Target Corporation, her sales and design skills were fine-tuned and she, too, was ready to take on something she could call her own.

She explained that she is “very independent and wanted a challenge” – which she claims she hasn’t been short of! Owning her own business has presented Jaeger with obstacles, undoubtedly, but she has pushed through and made a successful business out of it. I have yet to see her without a smile on her face and being positive. She is a true role model for other women in the community.

She is on her way to filling her father’s shoes, who is currently the store’s owner. A passionate go-getter, Danz stands firm on the fact that “If you want something bad enough you need to continue to fight for it; it won’t just come naturally. You need to work hard for the success.” She is a testament to leadership and empowerment of women; she’s never short of a strong stance on what she believes in. If you’re wondering what to expect from her in the next couple of years, be mindful of new, creative and fresh ideas for downtown and Zandbroz.

I would say that North Dakota has some uniqueness in that connectedness but also a strong spirit of entrepreneurship and access to capital are a factor,” said Zimmerman. “There’s access to the North Dakota Development Fund. We’ve had venture funds and a strong network of angel investors throughout North Dakota. We raised over $11 million to build Packet Digitial through a group of angel funds.”

f 16 percent of the servers worldwide had Packet Digital’s technology installed in them, the company’s technology would eliminate the need for an entire power plant. At least that’s according to Terri Zimmerman, CEO of Packet Digital, a company based out of Fargo that produces computer chips specializing in conserving power. When Zimmerman joined the company, she quickly realized the importance of what they’re doing.

Zimmerman is no stranger to startups. She started her career at Deloitte and Touche and got her first major start up experience at Great Plains Software as the CFO and Vice President of Operations. After Great Plains, she moved around a bit, but was always attracted to startups.

Analysts predict that by the end of 2015, there will be almost five billion connected devices and almost 20 billion by 2020.

According to Zimmerman, data centers consume the equivalent energy of nearly 30 nuclear power plants. Packet Digital is at the center of trying to solve this problem.

Right now, Packet Digital chips can be found in many Department of Defense applications like radios and servers. Zimmerman and the rest of the team at Packet Digital are producing a new chip that will soon be used in consumer electronics like tablets. After recently hiring people from HP and Intel, Zimmerman believes the company is in a strong place to succeed, especially being located in Fargo.

“Where a lot of people would ask, ‘Why would you build a tech company in Fargo?’ He (Doug Burgum, Great Plains Founder) saw that vision that there was quality talent coming out of the universities,” Zimmerman said. “He believed in the work ethic of the people of North Dakota and built his company around that.

He created an entrepreneurial spirit in North Dakota.”

As a woman in business, she’s noticed that she’s often the only woman in meetings, but she has simple advice on how to handle that.

“You have to be confident and believe in yourself. Be yourself,” she said.

WHAT THEY DO Packet Digital is a tech company based out of the 15th floor of the Radisson in Downtown Fargo. Their power management chips can be used in a wide range of applications from laptops to handsets.

Their PowerSage technology extends battery life by 400 percent in wireless sensors and more than 25 percent in PDAs.

TECHNOLOGY HOLLY ANDERSON ELINOR SPECIALTY COATINGS PRESIDENT/CO-FOUNDER

T

he lingo might be foreign and people might not view it as the most exciting field, but polymers and coatings have a lot of hidden potential.

Holly Anderson hopes to capitalize on that with Elinor Specialty Coatings. Started by her husband Dante Battocchi, the company develops coatings for a variety of purposes.

With three coatings on the line now, Elinor Specialty Coatings’ first product was coating to protect bronze art and artifacts.

This was what made Anderson jump into the business.

“We looked at the different options and I said, ‘OK, if we do a coating that’s related to art and architecture, I’m in,’” Anderson said with a laugh. “‘If

we do a coating that’s related to corrosion, I’m out.’”

One of the most exciting products Elinor Specialty Coatings is working on is their Aluma45, a coating used to protect aluminum. With a mandate for vehicles to reach up to 50 miles per gallon by 2020, this is particularly exciting as many auto manufacturers are switching over to aluminum frames to reduce weight. Elinor Specialty Coatings is working with auto manufacturers to help protect their vehicles.

Battocchi and Anderson have been working to receive a Small Business Innovation Research grant. This program is offered through the US Government to small businesses that are doing research that could be of use to the government.

This competitive program is one of Elinor Specialty Coatings’ ambitious goals. The husbandwife duo has set themselves up nicely by working out of the NDSU Research and Technology Park. The coatings were developed by Battocchi and other researchers at NDSU so the university holds the patent.

The relationship with NDSU has been part of their success.

The incubator offers office space, labs and mentoring to any of the businesses located there.

“The people in the Incubator are all doing the same things,” said Anderson. “It’s very tiny companies doing a lot with nothing so there’s a lot of support there. They always have a lot of great inroads to grants and workshops and different things about running a business.”

With a background in communication, Anderson had some trouble adjusting to the science business, but now that she has submersed herself into the field, she has adapted well.

“I love taking these ideas in science and translating them, whether it’s in the marketing or just talking to people and meeting people,” Anderson said. “… I think that’s a huge problem for scientists. If they don’t have somebody that can kind of translate their technology, their lingo, their idea into just regular terms, they really lose out. The reason Einstein is so famous is not only because of his genius but also because he was a really amazing communicator.”

Evanson doesn’t want to stop with the Neveah, though. Her company, InnovativeMother, has several other inventions in the works that all hope to help breast-feeding mothers. It’s no surprise Evanson’s life took this route considering her passion.

f necessity is the mother of invention, then being a mother unable to feed her child proved to be the ultimate mother of invention for Courtny Evanson. When her son was born, Evanson was unable to breast feed her son and he was allergic to formula, so she spent up to six hours a day pumping milk. During all that time pumping, the idea for Evanson’s invention, Neveah, was born.

It was thanks to Startup Weekend, a competition taking place over a weekend that brings together designers, developers and marketers to come up with a pitch for a company. That’s when Evanson’s idea really took off. She won the competition and that gave her the courage to pursue her dream.

“By mothers breast feeding, it supports breast feeding,” said Evanson. “The child is healthier, the mother is healthier. It helps postpartum depression.

That extra baby weight, the babies are healthier. They have a better start to life. They have less infections.”

“It was very supportive,” Evanson said. “If I wouldn’t have had the support there, I wouldn’t have had the courage to pitch my idea.

The atmosphere is so supportive.”

So what is Neveah? During the time Evanson was pumping, she was unable to do anything else for the six hours a day spent pumping. The Neveah is a table with breast pumping stations that allows a mother to lie down on her stomach. The mother can read while lying down, offers a protective wall for privacy and a smart phone docking station to listen to music.

There will be a family of products around breast pumping stations.

The Neveah will be available for home use as well as hospitals and offices. The home version can be changed into a lounge chair

“My dream was to be a neo-natal practitioner, so my dream was to work with infants,” Evanson said.

“To me, my dream evolved into something bigger than that. Now I can’t just help infants, I can help their mothers.”

While Evanson has plenty of experience with pumping and being a mother, she is a stranger to business. Luckily, the entrepreneurial community, especially Emerging Prairie, has been extremely helpful as she gets her business off the ground.

“They’ve (Emerging Prairie) gotten me so connected and pushed me to my limits. …” said Evanson. “They’ve really pushed me because I wouldn’t be where I’m at not knowing what I’m doing. They really give me that support that I need.”

HOW IT WORKS This concept illustration shows how the Neveah works.

GO BUSINESS Those friendships have paid off for them. Through various friends like Joel Marchand, who helped with the audio engineering, English has been able to capitalize on the strong entrepreneurial community.

“I was talking to somebody earlier today and they were like, ‘The entrepreneurial community is pretty close,’” said Weik.

“When you’re doing something challenging and tough and nobody else is doing it around town, finding other people to support you is pretty important.”

TEACHING SARAH ENGLISH BEACH INTERACTIVE CO-FOUNDER

I

t started with a vision of transforming the way people learn a language. Sarah English had traveled to France and thought there must be a more exciting way to teach someone a new language. That’s how Beach Interactive was born.

This game development company released their first app called “The Abettor’s Letters,” which is available now for download. This game places players in the shoes of an American spy, the abettor, as he is hired to solve different crimes. The players learn French along with the abettor. While the company was born out English’s passion for languages, it has not come without a lot of work.

“With it (the creation of the game) going on so long, you fall in and out of love with long

projects,” said English. “I think it’s good when you can stick with something. … It’s such a long shot. People see the successes and they think it’s overnight, but it’s years.”

With the first episode of “The Abettor’s Letters” under their belts, English hopes to begin work on episode two soon.

Founded by English and Kyle Weik, Beach Interactive is a small company with the only other permanent member being artist McCal Johnson. Despite their small staff, they have found much support in friends and the entrepreneurial community.

“We’ve just had to bootstrap it because we don’t have a ton of money,” said English. “We’re rich in time, more so than money, and rich in friends.”

by Myriad Mobile, an app development company based out of Fargo. English has developed a friendship with Myriad Mobile founder Jake Joraanstad through the entrepreneurial group Emerging Prairie, which Joraanstad is a co-founder of.

This friendship has paid off in dividends for Beach Interactive.

“That (friendship) really helps because he’s really supportive of the project and always has been,” said English. “He’s a great source of advice and mentorship and always has been. He’s a well-connected and great guy.

We share the same kind of values about Fargo and how to run a business.”

Being so heavily involved in the startup community, English participates in several meetups around town. In fact, Weik and English host a Game Makers meetup once a month.

These niche meetups have proven to be very helpful to other entrepreneurs.

“They’re (Meetups) getting nichier in a nice way,” English said. “I think people are coming out of the woodwork. At One Million Cups and the Startup Drinks they meet people and then they’re inspired to make even nichier meetups.”

Calling all RADICALS!

ur community is hungry for creative and technical talent.

There has been a tremendous amount of energy spent by civic leaders to attract and develop talent through workforce development campaigns, increasing partnership opportunities with our schools and with statewide campaigns claiming that our region is a great place to live. However, each day that a job is unfilled we are loosing ground in creating the greatest community in the world.

It can also start small. For example, I have a friend who is vegan. His struggle in finding food when attending events or choosing a place to meet with friends is a real challenge. Often times when events send out menus to choose from, there is a chicken, steak or vegetarian option. These options leave off gluten free options, vegan options or others that may have other food needs. If you or a friend has special food needs, you are keenly aware of the challenge of finding quality food.

So what can you do? What can each of us do today to make a real impact? I’d like to suggest one mindset that you could consider adopting that could change our community forever.

By offering gluten free options and vegan options to folks at the start, we can signal an open mind and consideration of folks with unique needs that wouldn’t otherwise be met.

It’s called Radical Inclusivity.

We can then evolve into language. Our word choices matter. Using inclusive language also demonstrates an open mind. We can choose language that does not make presumptions about someone’s gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or the like.

It starts with an open mind from our leaders, decision makers, event planners, etc. It evolves through our language and expands into our culture. It can have a massive impact on how our community positions itself as a relevant and open place where folks from around the world feel welcome and included.

Some of these people will be immensely talented and critical to our community’s success and improvement, and if we don’t include them, we lose them.

he Hotel Donaldson is well known for its superior hospitality, and the newest addition to its kitchen staff is no exception. Mark Schmidt took over as the HoDo Restaurant’s executive chef in September 2014 with a clear goal in mind: to bring an air of simplicity to the food lovers of this community.

After four years of working a paper route, Schmidt was 12 years old and decided he didn’t like it anymore. One Sunday, Schmidt’s father dressed him in church clothes, dropped him off at a restaurant two towns away with a duffle bag and told him he had an interview — except that it wasn’t really an interview. He was already hired and the duffle bag was full of clothes to change into for the dishwashing shift at a premiere supper club on the river in Mequon, Wis. “I had to bike 10 miles to every shift and I honestly hated it, but that’s where

it started,” said Schmidt. “I loved the people. I was a little punk kid and they took me in, showed me the ropes and what it meant to be part of a team.”

From there, Schmidt was taught how to prep cook while learning to like the aspect of the kitchen and how it worked. After working at numerous restaurants around the county, Schmidt decided to travel and do “the hobo thing” for a couple of years. He landed at a fish place in Port Washington, Wis., before he made his way back to Milwaukee and began working at a deli, market and full-service vegan café.

At age 18, he worked his way up to a manager position there in only seven months and says that’s where he truly began to enjoy food.

“I was vegetarian at the time, so it was really fun for me,” he explained. “There were lots of hippies and punk rockers, and it was an eye opening experience. I met a lot of life long friends there.”

A Step Further A few years later, Schmidt’s son was born, so he decided that he wanted to do something more and he enrolled himself in the culinary apprenticeship program at Milwaukee Area Technical College. On top of going to school one day a week, Schmidt found himself sponsored by one of Milwaukee’s finest dining institutions. Learning on the job under the master chef of Grenadier’s and his protégé opened up a whole new world of food and dining to Schmidt in just a year.

Schmidt finished his apprenticeship at Coquette Café and the Sanford restaurant, which are still some of the only five-star restaurants in Milwaukee, before he went on to work in various

country clubs and specialty restaurants.

He also found himself working for a company doing restaurant development and chef training, in which he was working in different places on a weekly basis.

Before he made it out our way this past September, Schmidt was working for a premiere restaurant group in Wisconsin by the name of Bartolotta’s. At their Lake Park Bistro establishment, Schmidt was the executive chef of their catering company doing intense, multi-million dollar large-scale events. Schmidt's wife is from this area and her parents live in Detroit Lakes, Minn., so Fargo was a no-brainer when it came to relocating.

I don’t like to put 100 different ingredients in my dishes, I just like to execute them well. Maybe each element is prepared in a different way and a thought has gone into it, but beyond that it’s pretty simple.”

"What is that?"

Schmidt’s cooking mantra is clear: he likes to cook simply with good ingredients and stuff that people can understand. For him, it’s all about properly seasoned and well-executed foods using solid techniques and fresh ingredients. He wants to eliminate the awkward situation of not ordering something because of either not knowing what it is or how to say it.

Fargo Friendly Let’s face it: Fargo likes simple. Our location tends to make us isolated when it comes to food trends happening in other areas. As much as we can be very “meat and potatoes” about our food choices, Schmidt hopes to take the reigns on bringing new and approachable things to the area while still catering to the dishes we love.

a time or two (or 10) when it comes to food and dining. Even though he’s traveled all over the nation, having three kids has kept him from venturing even farther, but that’s exactly what he wanted. German, Japanese, Chinese, Asian fusion, steakhouses, Italian, pizzerias, Indian food – the list of Schmidt’s experience goes on and on and it blatantly shows.

And for all of the food-lovers out there, just remember the most crucial ingredients to any dish: salt and pepper.

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT Puttanesca: It’s just fun to say!

he word itself certainly provides provocative connotations.

It’s a word that is closely associated with Italian slang and suggests a possible form of promiscuity. Most foodies and chefs agree that pasta Puttanesca was commonly cooked in Italian brothels because it was so quick and simple to prepare, yet it provides such aromas that any man would be easily drawn near. I suppose that our intentions with this dish today are somewhat parallel, minus the sexual activity of course.

My first encounter with this dish was at the Arizona Biltmore

Resort in Phoenix, where our supervising Sous Chef prepared it for staff meal one evening. As expected, the staff was intrigued by the name and of course we shared a short but entertaining discussion regarding its history.

Regardless of true origins, we all agreed that the dish is perfect for staff meal. It’s made with readily available ingredients and even the most novice of cooks can prepare Puttanesca with certain success.

Most, if not all, cookbooks will recommend that Puttanesca sauce be paired with pasta or fish. A fresh house-made pasta or a quickly grilled swordfish fillet provide the perfect match for this dish, especially considering

the ingredients: tomato, capers, olives, garlic, olive oil and sometimes anchovies. At our restaurant (Mezzaluna) however, we have decided to pair the fragrant sauce with beef meatballs, just to switch it up a bit. Puttanesca is certainly ideal for pasta or fish but can easily pair with chicken or beef in certain instances.

Like most popular culinary dishes, classic or not, Puttanesca has a way of fading out and eventually resurfacing. In my world, however, nothing truly goes out of style, especially if it’s easy to prepare, inexpensive and leaves a positive and lasting impression on us.

PUTTANESCA SAUCE • ¼ cup olive oil • 1 cup diced yellow onion • 5-7 cloves minced garlic • 2 ½ teaspoon dried basil leaves • ½ teaspoon dried oregano leaves • ½ teaspoon dried crushed red pepper flakes • ¼ cup dry white wine • (28-ounce) can diced tomatoes, with juice • 1 cup pitted and halved Kalamata olives • 2 tablespoons capers • 2 tablespoons tomato paste • 2 tablespoons minced anchovy fillets • Salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste • ¼ cup fresh basil, thinly sliced (chiffonade)

PREPARATION | In a medium-sized sauce

pan, lightly sauté onions, garlic, dried herbs and crushed pepper flakes in olive oil. Deglaze pan with white wine and reduce by half. Incorporate the tomatoes, olives, capers, tomato paste and anchovies. Season with salt and pepper and bring to a simmer. Simmer for 5 minutes, fold in fresh basil and serve.

Following her first bartending job at what used to be The Eastgate Lounge in Moorhead, she’s worked at so many places that she can’t even remember them all. After 12 years learning the ropes of mixing drinks, she currently finds herself mixing her custom creations at Monte’s Downtown.

Anderson’s mixology mantra is simple. She enjoys blending up concoctions that look good and are easy for everyone to enjoy without going overboard. She won’t use a bunch of different ingredients that will ultimately weird people out, but the ingredients she does use are chosen perfectly to fit each other.

“I just try to come up with drinks that everyone can enjoy,” explained Anderson. “They taste good, they’re not crazy but they’re still fun and something that everyone can afford.”

Along with the help of Montes’ sous chef Ian Berry and his culinary mind, Anderson comes up with many of her own cocktails and drink recipes that shape the restaurant’s menu.

Together, they blend their knowledge of food and drink to come up with ingredients that most wouldn’t think of using with certain spirits. Her Blackberry Sage Old-Fashioned is a fresh twist on the classic whiskey drink that’s perfect for the upcoming change in seasons.

“We thought of the sage because it’s not common in drinks, but it goes really well with whiskey,” Anderson said. “We’re trying to get out of the winter stuff, so I’ve been working with more refreshing flavors.”

While a typical old-fashioned would normally contain oranges and cherries, Anderson decided to do things a little bit differently to make the drink look more elegant with better flavor. By incorporating blackberries, the

fruit makes up for what would be the tart of the orange and the sweetness of the cherry. She also mixes her own simple syrups, and the addition of her sage simple syrup formula gives the drink a delicious, crisp taste that’s perfect for spring.

Anderson’s creations are one-ofa-kind and a solid representation of her expertise as a mixologist.

Not only does she strive to create cocktails that are visually and monetarily easy for everybody, she’ll always use ingredients that are the best and friendly to all.

In other words, she’s not going to set your stomach up to be in shambles the next day.
