A newborn baby, a sunset over the ocean, the first glance at your true love; there are some things that you’ll never forget and that can take your breath away.

However, the days and months leading up to that day can be stressful and difficult. Many women dream about their wedding day most of their lives. They fantasize about it as a girl, wait for their Prince Charming and count down the days after the engagement.

FOOD Eric and Sara Watson not only run Mezzaluna in downtown Fargo, but they also own one of the best catering companies in the area.

They gave us some tips on how to improve your catering experience as well as some fun, budget-friendly alternatives.

1 FORM VERSUS FUNCTION Your venue will dictate the menu. Depending on the reception venue’s kitchen facility, some food may or may not be a viable option. The Watsons say that couples should keep an open mind to different options if that is the case.

2 TRUST YOURSELF AND YOUR CATERER Eric Watson says the most important thing for couples to have when it comes to food is trust. Trust your instincts and trust your caterer.

3 CONSIDER OFF-PEAK HOURS A budget does not equate sacrificing food quality. The Watsons recently catered a morning wedding whose reception was at their restaurant Mezzaluna. They served a gourmet brunch where the guests were fed well and the couple saved some money.

4 BOOK WELL IN ADVANCE Like most aspects of a wedding, the sooner you book the better.

Mosaic is already booking weddings for next summer, as are many other caterers. Give yourself and the caterer time to develop a quality menu for your special day.

5 EMBRACE NONTRADITIONAL MEALS If you want to keep a traditional evening reception, you do not necessarily need to have a full-service sit down dinner.

The Watsons say that some couples are gravitating toward hors d’oeuvres parties, which better allows guests to socialize.

Family style and buffet lines are other options that may be more budget-friendly.

MUSIC The music makes the reception, so picking a DJ can be a daunting task. Sales & Booking Manager Steve Pris of Fargo’s largest DJ company told us what to keep in mind when searching for your wedding night entertainment.

1 MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK Opting for a DJ rather than a live band is not only more budgetfriendly, but more music-friendly.

Pris says that a DJ will play straight through, unlike bands who will take several breaks throughout the evening. Plus, you will get a greater variety of music with a DJ.

4 BOOK ASAP Believe it or not, Pris has already started booking weddings for the summer of 2015. In fact, some days are nearly booked solid, even with their 11 different DJ systems available per night. Book your music as soon as possible to lighten your wedding to-do list.

FIND A PERSONABLE DJ

Powerplay DJ offers more than just reception music. Consider renting one of their photo booths or karaoke machines as an added bonus for you and your guests.

Whether you go through Powerplay DJ or another area company, make sure you hit it off with your DJ. Pris says to keep in mind that they control the vibe of the reception, so you want to make sure they can handle entertaining hundreds of guests.

Since 2012 she has wowed couples on their big day with her vintageinspired style. The small business owner, who also works at Eco Chic Boutique, shared advice for couples looking for a little help with design.

1 FOCUS ON THE BIG PICTURE

KNOW YOUR PERSONALITIES

Whether you opt for Rustic Trunk’s partial design or go a different route, pick three specific areas to focus on. By doing this, you can focus your design on the most important parts of your wedding, whether it’s your head table, centerpieces, ceremony altar or anything else.

This will give you good direction.

Brusven says her number one advice for couples is to know your personalities as individuals and as a couple. Not only will this give your designer something to work with, your guests will come to your wedding and say, “This feels like them.”

No matter how hard you try, Brusven says you cannot please everybody, nor should you try.

It isn’t everybody’s wedding; it’s your wedding, and no matter what you pick it will not fit all styles. Follow your gut and make the design totally yours.

BRING CLEAR IDEAS

The best way to get to know your venue is by visiting it. Onsite visits allow you the chance to measure the space, take pictures and have a consultation. Face-to-face interactions are the best mode of communication when it comes to planning one of the biggest days of your life.

Make decisions about what you desire from a venue and choose accordingly. Follow up with a consultation with your venue coordinator – communication is key in making sure everyone is on the same page.

LEARN THEIR CAPABILITIES

COMMUNICATE TIMEFRAMES

Understand your venue’s capabilities inside and out. What are their capacities for sound, lighting and decorating? How flexible are they and what are their limits?

Make sure to bring these questions up during your consultation.

Your venue’s staff should be aware of the timeframes of your schedule. Details such as the start time of your dinner and when alcohol should stop being served are essential in making sure your celebration runs smoothly.

5 KNOW THEIR PAST Ask your venue coordinator what they have done in the past when dealing with unpredictable situations. Additionally, if you have a concern about a potential situation, consult your coordinator and ask for their recommendation.

It’s important you feel comfortable that the person you hire can handle a variety of situations.

FLOWERS Shotwell Floral has been a local legend for 125 years. Owner Annette Shotwell has seen her fair share of weddings and shared some excellent tips for brides and grooms who are picking out their floral arrangements and decorations.

1 RESEARCH Shotwell says the best thing a couple can do right away is research. Check out sites like Pinterest and determine what you do and do not like. If something piques your interest, the florist can help make it a reality.

RENT TO SAVE MONEY

Bring shots of the venue and the wedding gown, which will give the florist a look into your big day and will pave the way for your floral arrangements. A vintage dress and a rustic venue may call for a hand-gathered bouquet, while other looks may call for more streamlined florals.

If you’re on a budget, renting containers, vases, banners or an arbor may be the way to go.

Shotwell says it’s a great option for couples because they are able to use beautiful decorations for their wedding day and simply to return them afterward. Another tactic is to use florals on a portion of your reception tables and supplement the others with small decorations.

4 PERSONALIZE YOUR DAY Shotwell says couples are personalizing their weddings more and more. In the past, brides and grooms may have simply picked colors they liked and a couple of flowers and that was that. With so many options today, you can make your wedding day totally yours, letting your flowers and decorations represent the both of you.

5 TRUST YOUR FLORIST Be open-minded to their suggestions, because they have a plethora of knowledge. They are going to know what will and will not work and will probably have some great ideas. Shotwell mentioned if a problem arises, such as with a particular crop, they have the resources to supplement the flower.

6 KEEP SEASONAL FLOWERS IN MIND Off-season flowers may stretch your budget significantly, so check out what flowers will be in season during your wedding.

GOWN One of the most anticipated parts of any wedding is the bride’s gown. Alan Evans Bridal Manager Janna Knox shared some expert tips on how to make the most out of your shopping experience for both you and your girls.

1 SEARCH EARLY Bridal can take between five and nine months to ship and alterations can take between two and three. Allow yourself about a year to a year-and-a-half for peace of mind. If time is of the essence, you may be able to pay a rush charge on your dress and its alterations. Buying off the rack may be an option as well.

BE OPEN-MINDED

LIMIT YOUR ENTOURAGE

Knox says the best attitude a bride can have is being open to trying different things. Some styles that you are interested in may not be within your budget or fit how you expected. Being too picky may limit your options and leave you disappointed.

Too many opinions can make dress shopping nearly impossible.

Knox suggests you bring the people whose opinions you value the most, because large groups may make it hard to make a decision. Consider limiting it to your mother, maid of honor and future mother-in-law.

4 DON’T OVERLOOK ACCESSORIES

CONSIDER YOUR BRIDESMAIDS

Items such as your veil, shoes, jewelry and belt may be small but are not unimportant. Knox says to get those out of the way shortly after you pick a dress because they, too, may need to be shipped. Don’t hold off until two to three months beforehand.

Try to pick your bridesmaid dresses at least six months ahead so your girls have time to get alterations and have them shipped. Knox says that since everyone has different body shapes, be open to the idea of different dresses in the same color so your bridesmaids feel comfortable on your big day.

6 STAY CALM The biggest piece of advice Knox has is to stay calm. Shopping for your wedding day is supposed to be fun, so try not to let the little things get to you. Let your friends, family and bridal consultant help you out. That’s what they’re there for.

SUIT With two Fargo locations and hundreds of weddings each year, Halberstadt’s has the resources and expertise to make this part of your wedding a breeze. Managing Partner Barry Gruchow gave us some expert tips on how to shop for men’s attire for your big day.

1 KNOW YOUR WEDDING PARTY One of the most important things for a couple to know is their wedding party. Gruchow has noticed wedding parties growing in the last few years to include more groomsmen, more ushers and both fathers. Slim fit suits and tuxedos are all the rage right now, but that style may not be suitable for all men. Try to pick a style that will be appropriate and flattering for everyone.

There are subtle differences between tuxedos and suits, but both are appropriate for weddings. Tuxedos have satin lapels, satin buttons as opposed to brass or plastic and a satin stripe down the side of the pants.

Gruchow says suits are the more popular, cost effective option since men get to own them rather than rent.

If your budget allows, Gruchow always recommends a 100 percent wool tux or suit rather than one made of synthetic material or polyester. However, the fit is what makes all the difference. A good tux or suit is tailored well to the man, and then it comes down to fabric.

To ensure every man’s tux or suit fits properly, have them all go through the same process: stop in the store, get measured by a professional and try on the selected tux or suit. If this isn’t possible for each man, send him to a men’s clothier to get properly measured. Halberstadt’s has two full-time tailors that will alter the tux or suit correctly.

60-DAY TIMELINE Be sure to give them at least two months to take care of all tux or suit decisions, fittings and issues that may arise. That way, they can have everything ready to go two to four weeks before the big day. Gruchow says Halberstadt’s will “move and shake” with whatever they need to deal with, but that 60 days is an excellent time frame.

REMEMBER IT’S YOUR DAY Couples should stay true to their individual style.

Halberstadt’s is more than happy to accommodate, no matter the vision. Gruchow says that light grays and tans have been popular lately, but that the classic black and white combination will never go out of style.

1 DISCUSS YOUR SCHEDULE CHANGES Always keep your photographer posted about any changes that occur throughout the day.

Spontaneity can prevent your photographer from capturing your most priceless moments.

Changes that may seem minor – like the start time of a dinner or a dance – do affect your photographer’s ability to capture your vision.

2 SPILL YOUR SECRETS Sometimes families forget to let their photographer know about planned surprises, and the photographer is somewhere else when some of your best moments occur. Don’t let these moments be confined to your memories because you forgot to let your photographer in on the secret.

It also gives you an idea of what your wedding day is going to be like, and the less uncertainty you to experience on your big day, the better.

5 SHARE SPECIFIC MOMENTS Let your photographer know about any specific pictures you want. At the same time, though, don’t get obsessed with Pinterest.

You hired your photographer for his or her creative vision; don’t ask for your Pinterest faves to be re-created – the best pictures never are.

VIDEO While the food and venue will be gone before you know it, the photos and videos from your wedding day last forever. At least that’s what Justin Kavlie and Preston Johnson of Grassfire Studios believe. We talked with the two co-founders of the videography company to get some wedding video tips.

MAKE A HIGHLIGHT VIDEO

GET TO KNOW YOUR VIDEOGRAPHER

Highlight videos are becoming more and more popular. According to Johnson, about 9 out of 10 clients went with the highlight video.

Rather than filming the whole ceremony, this video will break up the whole day into a 5-minute video.

Your videographer is going to capture the most important day of your life; it’s important to get to know them and develop a rapport. “We really believe that to tell that story the best way that we can, we need to spend some time with you,” Johnson said. That’s why they like to meet the couple several weeks before the wedding and spend most of the wedding day with the bride and groom.

3 DIFFERENT PACKAGES Grassfire Studios offers several different packages. These packages range from their basic package to up to 12 hours of coverage, which includes them coming to the groom’s dinner.

The larger packages usually involve more cinematographers and longer videos. You must decide what you want your wedding video to be.

4 COME WITH IDEAS Johnson and Kavlie love couples that approach them with ideas.

That can range from an idea for a specific shot, a certain location or even somebody that will be fun to follow around. “We love couples that come to us and go, ‘This uncle that I have, spend some time capturing him because he’s going to be so much fun at the reception,’” Johnson said.

5 HOW DO YOU SHARE YOUR VIDEO? Be sure to ask yourself how you will be sharing your video with your friends and family.

Facebook is the new favorite medium. Although they’re happy to make them, Grassfire Studios doesn’t make DVDs that often anymore.

Couples are usually just given the digital file of the wedding video.

TIPPING It can be a challenge to figure out how much to tip the driver at the end of the night. Draeger said that the industry standard is 15 to 20 percent.

According to Draeger, weddings usually book their bus or limo five to six months in advance and bachelor/bachelorette parties are booked about a month out.

BURRATA: A STEP ABOVE MOZZARELLA

T

he process of making fresh mozzarella is quite simple. If you haven’t done it before, I would recommend you give it a try. All you need is some fresh mozzarella curd, salt, hot water and a YouTube video.

Mozzarella curd is not readily available at any local Fargo grocery store, but I’m sure if you asked nicely and offered to pay for the entire portion, the deli manager may oblige and order you some. A local chef may help you out as well.

Very few things are better than fresh, hand pulled mozzarella with vine ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, a nice olive oil and some freshly ground black pepper. However, burrata may be just a step above fresh mozzarella, although it is technically still mozzarella.

Burrata is Italian for “buttered.” This is because burrata is sometimes filled with butter and cream, but usually just cream.

It’s made using the same process as fresh mozzarella. First, the fresh curd is plunged into salted hot water and hand-pulled to the proper consistency. However, instead of forming it into a solid, it’s formed into a cup and random pieces of mozzarella and cream are inserted. The fresh mozzarella is then crimped on top and remoistened before packaging. The end product results in a fresh mozzarella with a creamy center that runs onto the plate when cut into.

During a recent trip to Winnipeg, I ate at a restaurant specializing in Spanish tapas. The house-smoked king salmon with burrata cheese caught my attention immediately. I ordered it anticipating a whole piece of burrata that I could cut into in order to expose the creamy interior texture and flavors. Instead, the cheese was already cut and used as a base for the salmon and remaining components. I have to say, I was disappointed. Not so much with the dish itself, but with the application of the burrata cheese. If you’re going to cut the cheese in advance, then why not simply use a fresh mozzarella?

At the sake of sounding as though I have no shame, I can tell you that at Mezzaluna we serve our burrata whole with pesto, grilled bread and vine ripened tomatoes.

We keep the seasonings and components to a bare minimum in order to let the natural flavors shine through. We believe that simplicity always wins, especially when the ingredients are of high quality.

For now, burrata is still quite scarce in the Fargo-Moorhead restaurant scene. I’m sure it may pop up in a few more food establishments here in the next year, but, until then, feel free to join us at Mezzaluna to satisfy your burrata craving.

and the area’s courses are in full swing. It is a lot of work running a golf course, even in the five months of off-season. So who are the ones behind the day-to-day operations of some of the area’s favorite R&R spots? We met with three of FargoMoorhead’s seasoned golf pros to get a behindthe-scenes look.

Edgewood’s head golf pro began golfing when he was six years old, and the hobby turned into a career. For the last 15 years, he has been in charge of Fargo’s oldest public course.

But this golf professional doesn’t get out to enjoy a leisurely game of golf nearly as much as he’d like. However, he does get to run the day-to-day operations of two area golf courses, which he said is rewarding in itself.

reg McCullough knows just how many days are between the beginning and end of prime golf season: 215.

“The best part of my job is it’s never the same day,” McCullough said. “Even though you go through a lot of the same activities every day, every day gets to be a little bit different which is really cool.”

The Minnesota native spent one winter working at a golf course in Arizona, and although he loved the weather, he couldn’t help but miss the seasons of the upper Midwest.

“In the 7 months we’re open, I think we get the whole realm: we get cold and windy, we get hot and muggy, we get a lot of days in between.”

In the 5 months Edgewood isn’t open, McCullough spends as much time with his family as possible. When golf season rolls around, he is lucky enough to work with close friends.

He said that most of the golf pros in the area have either worked with each other or for each other, making it a tight knit group.

“It makes it great for golf because there’s some consistency throughout the whole system,” McCullough said, “and it makes it great for us because we have people that we can ask questions.”

or 30 years Matt Cook has been playing his favorite game and anyone who can say that is pretty lucky.

For the past 10 years, Cook has overseen the golf operations of Rose Creek and Prairiewood Golf Courses. Aside from managing about two dozen employees, he helps organize corporate events and teaches lessons. But the greatest part of his job? The people.

“It seems like we’ve really started to create a kind of a following, some real loyalty there,” Cook said.

When the players pack up their clubs and the courses close for the season, Cook’s job isn’t done. The seven-month season, which Cook explained as Tax Day to Halloween, wraps up and they get a couple of slow months to recoup.

Then spring arrives and the planning begins. Soon enough, the season begins anew and the courses are at full speed.

“Here, it’s kind of nice because we’re so passionate about our golf around this area that it’s busy. It’s busy in the short window we have,” Cook said.

When he can get out and play, he will jump at the opportunity.

“Any day there’s not snow on the ground is the perfect day to play golf.”

“I used to drive up to a ski lodge that had snow on Christmas just to get some snow, just to get some cold,” Herlickson said. “That gave me the chance to at least give me winter.”

“Having people come into a facility or an organization when they’re eager to be there, they’re happy because they’re there, and on their worst day at that place, they’ll say it’s better than their best day at work,” he said. “That makes it very easy to come to work and enjoy what you’re doing.”

MUSIC SPOTLIGHT PICKING YOUR WEDDING MUSIC This month’s issue of Fargo Monthly is all about weddings, so I thought this month I would discuss picking the music for your wedding. I have been to quite a few weddings in my day. I have been in several weddings, including my own, and I have played in a couple of weddings. If you can believe it or not, I have also officiated several weddings.

There are a couple of main points you should remember when picking the entertainment for your special day. First, know yourselves.

Figure out what is most important to you.

Weddings add up fast and not everyone has an unlimited budget for a wedding reception.

When my wife and I were planning our wedding, the two things we didn’t care how much we spent on were photography and our band. If the entertainment you provide for your guests isn’t that important to you, or if your crazy families provide plenty of entertainment themselves, save your money. Rent a small sound system, put a playlist together on an iPod, hit ‘Play’ and enjoy yourself. If it is important to you, then be prepared to fork over a decent chunk of change.

If you have answered ‘yes’ to the question of whether or not your wedding entertainment is important to you, then the next part of knowing yourselves is figuring out what kind of entertainment you want to hire. Do you love Top 40 radio and want to jam to everything current? Do you prefer to get nostalgic and hear all the songs that were playing on the radio when you were in high school? Or do you want to hear what was popular when you first met your significant other? If you want to do all the typical wedding shenanigans like the dollar dance, the garter raffle, the chicken dance or the hokey pokey – hire a DJ or a band that plays

90 percent of their gigs for the woman who is front and center in a white dress. These bands are great at playing weddings; they know just what to play and how to work a wedding crowd. A DJ service is the same.

They play weddings, graduation parties, proms and other school dances. Most DJs, through a DJ service company, are personable, charismatic and can make your night just as fun on the mic as they can on the decks.

If this is not your forte and you frequent places that provide live original music and that is what you want to see at your reception, then ask your friends. If you have a friend or two that play in some of the bands you like to go see – all the better. Some of the best weddings I have been to, the bride or groom, or both, were good friends with the band. It really helps make the night more special. They know what your favorite songs are and will most likely play them for you, or they may be willing to take the time to learn some requests prior to the party. If you are not so lucky to be friends with your favorite local band, go introduce yourself. Trust me, as a musician, we are always interested in a fun gig.

The second part of deciding what to pick for your wedding entertainment is to know your guests. If you love death metal and well over half of your guest list are over

Try to find a compromise that makes you happy and keeps your guests at the party.

They might love you to death (pardon the pun) but they may not stick around too long. Remember, it is your night, but you want everyone to feel comfortable. Also, remember that at your wedding, you are the reason for the party, but your guests are the ones that are going to make it a celebration.

I know how stressful planning a wedding can be. I hope that I was able to help make planning this glorious event a little easier.

Remember: know yourselves, know your guests and do what you can to include everyone, because the more your loved ones have a blast at your wedding, the more fun the whole night will be.

Seven years ago, I sat at a table with nine friends in a self-organized learning group studying social entrepreneurs. Our teacher, a former University of Minnesota professor, attempted to help us reimagine education by asking the question, “Where is community for you?” Each of us, in this intergenerational group of folks was interested in how business models could solve social problems, went around the room and shared our responses.

Rajni, a Canadian of Indian descent, responded that her family is where she found community after living on four continents. John, an 80-year old, shared that his neighborhood was where he found community. David, a Native American in his 40s, shared that the land was where he found community.

At 22, I heard nine different responses I couldn’t have predicted. It made me really ponder the question; where do I find community?

For five years, while living in Minneapolis, MN, I searched for it. Outside of my work friends, I wasn’t able to find a place where I felt comfortable stopping by people’s homes just because. That is something I really appreciated in childhood. It was tough for me to feel accepted. Being from North Dakota, and growing up in Fargo, I had a self-created inferiority complex.

Fast forward to the present, I feel like I’ve finally found the community I want to be a part of. It took coming back to Fargo, a city I never thought I’d return to, to find that community. It also took a lot of hard work.

It took meeting new people over coffee just because, being set up on blind friend dates over beers to meet guys who I now consider great friends. I took long walks with teammates, accepted an invitation to dinner at Dr. Susan Mathison’s with her family and went to places like Mezzaluna and Atomic Coffee on a regular basis to be seen and get involved in the community.

Now, a group of friends calls our community the Emerging Prairie. It’s a community built around collaboration, idea sharing and friendship. It’s a community with a focus on innovators, risk takers, technologists and friends who want to help out. It’s a community built by the Blaines, who established Fargo’s first hackathon, and the Brandons, who are building Mobile Tech meet-ups. We live in a place where a group of women wake up early in the morning to plan North Dakota Women’s Startup Weekend. It’s a group of people who care, create and are building the community they want to live in.

As our community expands and our city thrives, we each have a tremendous opportunity to build the community we want to be a part of. It takes time, it takes effort, but it is a ton of fun. For me, I can now answer our professor’s question with confidence – I understand what community is for me. It’s a place where you can create, participate, contribute and enjoy the hard work of others. For me, it’s the Emerging Prairie, a place where I feel known, loved and challenged. It might be the greatest place in the world.

MIXOLOGIST If you work at an Irish pub, you better know a thing or two about whiskey. It’s a good thing that Eric Krogh, General Manager at Hennessey’s Irish Pub in Fargo, is well-educated on the subject.

rogh started in the restaurant business about 15 years ago when he worked at Guadalajara’s in Fargo. Little did he know that he was entering a career he would follow most of his life, which is fine by him.

“I enjoy that every day is different,” Krogh said.

“There are always new people to meet… It’s a job that makes the time go by quickly.”

“Whiskey is the family category and there are all sorts of subsets of whiskey,” he said.

According to Krogh, what mainly separates different types of whiskey, among other things, is geography. Scotch is from Scotland, Bourbon is American, and so on. Irish whiskey is obviously the most popular drink at Hennessey’s. In fact, they have about 26 different Irish whiskeys.

Krogh has studied whiskey and he can quickly tell you which one is his personal favorite.

“I’m a whiskey guy and I drink it with a glass.”

Hennessey’s opened last March and is authentically Irish. In fact, it is so authentically Irish, that most of the bar, from the bar itself to the floorboards to the chairs, was built in Ireland before being shipped over.

Since the bar is authentic, the staff has to ensure that the drinks are as well. This is where Krogh’s knowledge comes in.

Josh Buchholz and his staff have solidified their independent baseball organization as one of Fargo’s great summer traditions. From putting a talented product on the field to providing endless entertainment in between innings, the RedHawks always know how to arouse the crowd at Newman Outdoor Stadium.

n 1996, Madison, Wisc. welcomed in their first independent baseball organization. With ownership headed by local attorney Patrick Sweeney and singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, the Madison Black Wolf made their presence known immediately in the Northern League. The Black Wolf finished 44-41 and advanced their way into the league semifinals before losing to the eventual league champs St. Paul Saints. The Black Wolf popularity was rising in Madison, or so it had been predicted. After the ’96 season, the Black Wolf saw its attendance fall year by year. Warner Park only saw 700 fans a night during 90

the 1998 season and it only got worse from there. By 2000, Sweeney and his partners sold the team, killing professional baseball in Madison for good.

But Buchholz said the organization began its dreaded plateau around the mid-2000s. “It could have gone one way or another,” explained Buchholz, who slowly realized the independent league life cycle was catching up with the RedHawks.

“Luckily we were able to pull ourselves up and really refocus the branding and focus on what we wanted to do and what we were trying to do at the games.”

“I think we had to give them (the fans) a reason to keep coming back,” said Buchholz, who has been a part of the organization since day one. He believes the solution was in the hands of the marketing staff.

“We take pride in being family friendly and affordable fun.

Not everyone likes baseball, but we’re more than just baseball; we have the game within the game,” says Karl Hoium.

“That’s when my job comes in.” Hoium’s official title with the RedHawks is Director of Promotions & Merchandise, but he’ll be the first to tell you employees in the RedHawks front office have many responsibilities.

A league-mandated 90 seconds between innings restricts Hoium’s team from anything outrageous, but dance competitions and kids racing have become complimentary entertainment while attending games.

The RedHawks have averaged over 3,500 fans a game since entering the American Association in 2011, ranking in the top five of the league every season. Michael Larson believes it’s a combination of the team and the growth of the Fargo market that has played a key role in the RedHawks escaping the feared plateau of an independent franchise.

“We don’t usually try to convince people to come to games. We like to remind them ‘Hey, we have a game tonight,’” said Larson, who acts as the franchise’s Director

of Ticket Operations. Larson has been with the RedHawks since 2008 and explained the number of season ticket holders has hit a new high this season at 1,100.

He’s seen that growth from markets outside of Fargo, too.

“When we started, Grand Forks was roughly one percent of our sales on the year. It’s now up to five percent.” Larson now says the RedHawks have seen people from Detroit Lakes to Valley City coming to enjoy games in Fargo.

The demise of an independent baseball team like the Black Wolf has been avoided in Fargo as the RedHawks are again enjoying another great summer of baseball both on the field and in the front office. “We’re a smaller market, but we’re one of the top franchises in independent baseball; there’s no doubt in my mind,” says Buchholz, who truly believes the RedHawks have solidified themselves as one of the area’s greatest summer traditions.
