How do two men, hired to keep machines running in a sugar processing plant, become technology innovators? Two words: freedom and training. American Crystal Sugar Company processes sugar for top brands like Hershey’s, Kraft, and Kellogg’s. In this high-stakes environment, innovation drives opportunity.
Mike Medema and Zack Orvis are turning routine repairs into gamechanging technology solutions,
starting with automating a long-time manual process. That was just the beginning. With leadership support and a drive to learn, they tap into extensive training opportunities, gaining the know-how to lead meaningful operational change. Their knack for listening to coworkers and identifying critical fixes has made work smoother, safer, and more rewarding.
At American Crystal, innovation isn’t reserved for a few—it’s built into the culture. And that same opportunity is there for anyone ready to grab it. American Crystal Sugar Company

I first heard about the "Faces of" concept in 2016 from a publisher out of Omaha, NE. They had created a magazine that helps promote local business by featuring a "Face" of a specific business type (e.g. "Face of Architecture"). This publisher found that the publication was able to connect community members with local Omaha businesses. From there, I talked to other publishers and wanted to see how the publication was received in their markets. Overall, we found that the feedback was really great in those regions, too.
Of course, I love and will always champion the idea of promoting community. That's why in 2021, we decided to bring this concept to the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo, and Bismarck-Mandan communities. And in 2022, we continued to create this publication in those markets while also bringing the concept to Sioux Falls. We have continued providing this publications in these communities ever since.
At all of our stops along the way, we have received such great feedback that we are bringing it back once again.
We hope you enjoy this publication and take the opportunity to get to know some of the people behind this thriving business community.
In 15 years, we have been able to create over 500 magazines. All of which are solely based on telling
positive community stories! This is another piece to that puzzle and I truly believe you will enjoy reading about your friends and neighbors in the ensuing pages.
This publication is considered a "native advertising piece" in the publishing industry. This means that each "Face of" is a sponsored page and paid for by that advertiser. However, this is not a "Best of" publication—it is simply a way for our community to see some of the "Faces" of respective businesses. In turn, we are connecting our readers to businesses they may not even be aware of.
By making this a sponsored magazine, we were able to produce the publication at a high quality and provide 30,000 copies free to the public. Our sales and editorial teams tried to ensure that we reached out to credible "Faces" of the categories we chose. Our goal is for readers to enjoy learning more about some of the people behind the businesses that make our community thrive. Hopefully, it will create a better sense of community and also encourage more of us to shop local!

Managing the full scope of human resources has become increasingly complex. Large companies reduce risk and control costs by relying on full-scale HR departments. But for small and mid-sized businesses, building that same internal infrastructure simply isn’t cost-effective.
Instead, some small businesses roll the dice with a DIY approach or rely on a single, often overwhelmed, HR generalist. In this model, the real cost of HR, including risk exposure, time, and turnover, is rarely measured, but it adds up fast. All considered, engaging an external HR partner provides cost savings.
Just as businesses have long outsourced IT, legal, financial, and marketing services, many are now applying the same logic to HR.
Traditional HR outsourcing options often stop at the basics: payroll, forms, and compliance checklists. As a Professional Employer Organization (PEO), PRO offers a full corporate HR department: safety, wellness, EAP, insurance administration, payroll, workers’ compensation claims and coverage, HR technology, and on-site support.
“We offer what feels like an entire HR army, without the overhead,” PRO Partner Jason Boutwell said. “We’ve built the model so that pricing scales with headcount. That makes it accessible to companies of every size.”
Because PRO aggregates purchasing power across its client base, it provides access to Fortune 500-level employee packages, often at a lower cost than small businesses can obtain on their own. PRO can also work with your current providers. From payroll and onboarding to audits and even

Nicholas Schroeder, Shannon Castanon, & Michael Burton
Oxi Fresh loves to serve. Owner Michael Burton has a long background in restaurant and retail management where he learned the fundamental yet simple keys to customer service. A positive spirit with a others first mindset and a passion for connection usually culminates in lasting relationships and experiences. Seven years ago he bought the North Dakota Franchises of Oxi Fresh and using that recipe has grown from one vehicle to 16 serving 5 states in the upper midwest (North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Montana).
At Oxi Fresh, carpet cleaning is just the beginning. Michael, alongside leader Shannon Castanon and Nicholas Schroeder, have built a team that prioritizes people. Their philosophy is to give generously and grow consistently. That approach has powered their steady rise and helped create an operation known for both quality and care. This is reflected in the over 2000, 5 star Google reviews from real satisfied customers.
Unlike traditional steam cleaners, Oxi Fresh uses a lowmoisture system that dries in about an hour. It needs just 5% of the water typical steam cleaners use, making it quicker, cleaner, and better for your carpet. No wickback, no
soggy floors, no waiting a day to walk on your own carpet again.
The key is their proprietary cleaning solution, which breaks down grime with an oxygenated booster, then locks it in with a special encapsulator. Their OF1000 machine lifts the dirt out—no residue, no crushed pile.
Oxi Fresh handles carpet, upholstery, tile and grout, and hardwood floors. It’s been named Franchise of the Year (2020–2023), received the EPA’s “Safer Choice” award, and has helped over 40,000 people gain access to clean water through its Water.org partnership. To date, the company has
saved more than 117 million gallons of water.
Backed by a mission to serve and a team that lives it, Oxi Fresh is more than a cleaning service. It’s a people-first business that just happens to leave carpets spotless.

Valley Christian Counseling & Wellness is growing—because the need is growing. With children’s mental health needs rising fast, the team is expanding its services into a brand-new Child Therapy Center in the former Chuck E. Cheese building next door to its Fargo clinic.
This expansion is timely. Over the past two years, demand for Valley’s children’s services has surged by 300%. Families across the region are looking for support that is compassionate, Christ-centered, and clinically sound. Valley is answering that call.
The team includes licensed counselors, play therapists, and pediatric occupational therapists who work with children to build emotional resilience, social skills, and confidence. From anxiety to trauma to developmental challenges, they meet kids where they are—using age-appropriate tools, creativity, and care.
Their play-based therapy gives younger children the chance to express emotions without pressure. Pediatric OT helps kids grow in fine motor skills, focus, coordination, and independence. Sessions are rooted in faith, backed by evidence, and tailored to each child’s needs.
But it’s not just about children. Valley also offers counseling for teens, adults, couples, and families. Their model is relational and whole-person. Every therapist is clinically trained and spiritually grounded, offering guidance that’s professional and personal.
Each month, Valley supports hundreds of families, facilitating over 2,000 appointments. Their impact extends beyond the clinic through partnerships with churches, nonprofits, and workplaces.
Valley Christian Counseling doesn’t rush healing. They walk with people through the hard, the holy, and everything in
between. Their message is simple: you matter, you’re not alone, and healing is possible.
Valley Christian Counseling & Wellness
At Valley, healing means more than symptom relief—it means becoming fully alive in body, mind, and spirit. That’s why they offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy, a noninvasive, FDA-approved treatment for depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

What began in 1999 as “Mike’s Mowing,” a small neighborhood service, has grown into one of the Fargo-Moorhead area’s most trusted names in exterior home care. Founder Mike Svaleson expanded steadily through high school and college, adding snow removal, landscaping, and a small team of employees. By 2007, the Turf Tamers name was filed, and in 2010, the LLC was launched—marking the start of a company built to handle nearly everything outdoors.
Growth came through both hard work and smart acquisitions, including H2O Sprinkler Company, Ridgeway Irrigation, and Five-Star Lawn Care. Today, Turf Tamers
offers complete exterior solutions for homes and businesses, partnering with specialists when needed so customers can make a single call and know the job will be done right.
Customer experience drives everything they do. Turf Tamers builds customized service packages, covering lawn care, irrigation, landscaping, snow removal, and more—so clients can “set it and forget it.” With advanced technology, efficient scheduling, and clear communication, they ensure every property receives the right care at the right time.
Their detailed, proven processes act like an owner’s manual for a property, guiding every step from initial consultation

to ongoing maintenance. Low staff turnover means crews know each site’s unique needs, and a responsive office team works hard to answer calls and handle requests quickly.

In fact, many customers trust them to maintain both their homes AND businesses!
After 25 years, Turf Tamers continues to transform properties and simplify life for their clients—proving that when it comes to the outdoors, no one does it better.
