DECEMBER ISSUE 176 12 The search is over It seems like yesterday that you were sipping margueritas under the summer stars. In fact, it probably was yesterday. And here we are now, with Christmas coming to a cinnamon and chocolate boil and the only star in the sky being the one on top of your Christmas tree. Anyone else would take that as a dark harbinger of old age, a sign that time is stepping on the gas pedal and bringing us closer to mashed food and morning telly. But we’re not anyone else. Rather, we take Christmas for what it is: a sparkly occasion to spend in the company of family, friends and a festive wardrobe. In this issue of FM, Helena Abela enjoys the rush of shopping in London. However, she doesn’t follow the well-trodden path: instead, she sticks to the side streets and manages to find something new for all the family, from yummy mummy and daddy cool to the hipster, the fashionista and, of course, the foodie. While in London, we catch up with photographer Chris Agius Burke. Since holding his first camera when he was 10, Chris has come a long way. Now working (and playing) in London, he has managed to develop his unique style and stand out in the overcrowded world of fashion photography. Christmas and New Year are the perfect occasion to dress up. In this issue of FM, we propose the hottest wardrobes of the season: cue a line-up of glittery dresses, gorgeous shoes and accessories, and some cuddly trends. Stylist Sam Corcoran also finds some worthy alternatives to the little black dress. In our final issue of the year, we also meet the winners of the FM Model Search, organised by FM, Models M and New Look. The main aim of this search was to find the next face of fashion. And we have found them: well done to Emma Gera and Orlando Falzon. We’re pretty sure we’ll be seeing more of you in 2015. Read on and enjoy the festive season.

Emma Gera and Orlando Falzon are the winners of the FM Model Search.

MODEL SEARCH

E

mma Gera and Orlando Falzon have been declared the winners of the FM Model Search. The winners were announced during a casting event which was held at New Look, The Point, Sliema. Organised by FM, Models M and New Look, the FM Model Search offered contestants the possibility to become the next face of fashion. There was a lot of interest in the Model Search and the casting event was certainly busy. However, Emma and Orlando stood out and are now appearing in the December issue of FM magazine. They will also receive a one-year modelling contract with Models M and a €100 voucher from New Look.

Orlando Falzon

Emma Gera

Work: Finance and corporate manager.

Studies: Psychology and philosophy at sixth form.

What encouraged you to start modelling? My family and friends encouraged me to start modelling and I decided to give this competition a try.

What encouraged you to start modelling? Around three years ago I was at a family gathering and I was approached by a stylist, who I knew was involved in the fashion industry. She encouraged me to start modelling and discovered that this was something that I wanted to explore further.

Who do you get your looks from? I get them from my mother’s side of the family. Modelling is more than just looks. What, in your opinion, do you need to be a successful model? I believe that having a positive attitude is a must. Creativity, versatility, confidence, a down to earth attitude and good communication skills are also equally important traits. How would you describe the experience of participating in the FM Model Search competition? The experience was fun, exciting and professional. It was a great opportunity for aspiring models who want to make it in the fashion industry. What does winning the competition mean to you? Since I’m quite new to the modelling scene, winning this competition was an excellent start. This achievement will surely lead me to other interesting collaborations. Prospects for 2015? I will continue focusing on my professional career and studies, and keep living a healthy lifestyle. Also, I’m going to work hard to get involved in the fashion industry.

Who do you get your looks from? I get my height from my father and the looks from my mother. Modelling is more than just looks. What, in your opinion, do you need to be a successful model? Confidence and being as natural as possible. How would you describe the experience of participating in the FM Model Search competition? It was an amazing event especially meeting other people my age sharing the same interests. Thanks to this, I’m certain that it will open other avenues in the future. What does winning the competition mean to you? I’m very happy to win the competition. It’s a good lesson which taught me that if you want something in life, you have to work hard for it. Prospects for 2015? I will hopefully reach my educational goals while being able to keep up with modelling. FM

CHRISTMAS

The capital of Christmas No, it’s not the North Pole. For a memorable Christmas, head to biscuit tin favourite London, says Helena Abela.

REGENT STREET

T

he fact that you have only just packed away your flip-flops may give you the illusion that Christmas is a long way off. But it’s not. It’s actually here. Time to put your festive thinking cap on (mine is complete with tinsel and antlers) and get your Christmas shopping list in order. As the famous and quite frankly over-played Cliff Richard carol goes, “It’s a time for giving and for getting”. For those of you who take the whole giving thing really seriously then a little weekend shopping trip to London may just be the ticket. Oxford Street will be swarming with shoppers lugging brown carrier bags (Primark) or bright yellow ones (Selfridges) depending on which side of the street you are attempting to manoeuvre through. Unless you are geared up to the nines, complete with riot shield and tear gas then I strongly suggest taking note of the following shopping hot spots that are located firmly away from Oxford Street’s well paved track to a more cultural experience that can be tied in with a spot of sightseeing.

For the kids: Regent Street No shopping trip to London is complete without a visit to Hamleys located on bustling Regent Street. It is the ultimate toyshop that will have faces instantly light up with glee that will quickly turn into fits of frenzy – and that’s just the adults. If you are looking for the latest toy or a classic, Hamleys is the go-to that will have any child jump for joy on Christmas morning. Be warned: you may have to book an extra seat for the life-sized teddy bear. Head into Soho for a complete change of scene and dinner at Polpo or Flat Iron followed by a wander around some of London’s best watering holes. You may want to leave the kids and teddy bear behind for this.

SAMTSIRHC

KING’S ROAD

For yummy mummy: King’s Road King’s Road, the Chelsea birthplace to 1960s fashion and home to designers such as Vivienne Westwood, is one of London’s most fashionable high streets. The streets are lined with boutiques and stores, such as LK Bennet, Anthropologie and Jaeger, as well as beauty favourites Space.NK, L’Occitane and Neal’s Yard that are sure to solve mummy dearest’s gift conundrum. Visit Saatchi Gallery for some modern art and enjoy a walk through Sloane Square followed by lunch at the Botanist for some people watching.

EDWARD SEXTON SUMMER COLLECTION 2013

For daddy cool: Savile Row Dads are probably the most difficult when it comes to buying gifts. We tend to think that they are simple: a book, a bottle of whisky, a hammer? But give them a little more credit. Savile Row, located in Mayfair and best known for its tailoring, is a great spot to buy those little extras for a dapper dad. Hardy Amies does a great range of eyewear while a pair of cufflinks from Tatossian, which is located nearby on Conduit Street gives that added personal touch. While you are there visit the Burlington Arcade followed by a walk to Grosvenor Square for high tea and scones at the Dorchester or Claridge’s, darling! BOROUGH MARKET

For the fashionista: Marylebone High Street

Aside from a great range of eateries, Borough Market, located by London Bridge, is perfect for the food connoisseur. The market offers foods, preserves, charcuterie and condiments from all over the world. The Potted Game Company, From Field and Flower, Rubies in the Bubble and Fitz Fine Food offer a range of culinary delights to suit all tastes. If you need to walk off your lunch then a stroll along the South Bank with a pit stop at the Tate Modern will certainly help you digest. The Christmas Market set-up for the festive season also deserves a visit with shows and events happening throughout the month of November and December

Marylebone High Street is just off bustling Oxford Street, a haven if you will for high-end independent retailers such as Kabiri, Ash, Joseph and Aspinal of London. Here, you will definitely find something for the girl who has everything. You may be tempted to visit Madame Tussauds but if you want to avoid the tourist scene head down to Great Titchfield street for brunch at The Riding House Café, dinner at Burger and Lobster (the menu is the name!) or a simple coffee in a toilet at the newly opened Attendant. MARYLEBONE HIGH STREET

For the foodie: Borough Market

SPITALFIELDS MARKET

For the hipster: Spitalfields Market East London has gained recognition over the years as one of London’s trendy areas, so it is a great little spot that will instantly gain you some street-cred. Spitalfields Market, located in Shoreditch, has a great range of stores and pop-up shops such as Oliver Bonas, Moleskine and Wood N Things offering quirky gift ideas that are sure to provide a variety of unique and affordable choices. If you are hanging out with the cool kids head down to Brick Lane for a curry followed by some cocktails at Swingers London.

For the Tweens and Teens: Kensington High Street A concise version of Oxford Street, Kensington High Street has all your favourite high street stores in one manageable dose. High street giants such as H&M, Top Shop and Urban Outfitters are lined-up one after the other meaning that you still have a great choice of what is on-trend but without the crowds. For some fresh air and a sneak peek of Prince Harry take a walk in the beautiful Kensington Gardens followed by iceskating in Hyde Park. FM

The little bold dress Be brave and ditch the little black dress this festive season, says stylist Sam Corcoran.

T DONNA KARAN

’is the season, so they say and along with it comes a fluttering of party invites. It’s a magical time of the year and the perfect occasion to make a statement. It’s also the season to leave the little black dress locked up in your closet and embrace something new. Of course, the LBD has long been a wardrobe staple and will remain one for a long time. However, I think that it has a time and a place, and the party season is not the time. The LBD is too much of a safe option – so push the boundaries, find alternatives and be noticed.

Heavy metal

CHLOE

1

Metallic is a huge trend at the moment. Gold, bronze and muted silvers are all a great option. You don’t have to go for a full metallic dress – look for something that has metallic accents, embellishments or sequins. This season there are multiple options with designers updating classic fabrics like lace and brocade with metallic finishes and accented jacquards. Check out Burberry Prorsum, DVF, Chloe and Donna Karan for inspiration.

ROKSANDA ILINCIC

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

2

3

Find the pattern Print and texture instantly update even the most classic of dresses. Leather and tweed are great winter staples and have quite an impact if worn in the right way. Tweed looks great in a shorter shift dress style with a simple pump and a great clutch. Graphic jacquards have been on the fashion radar for a few seasons now and they continue to go from strength to strength. Colour block falls under this category too: a bold geometric colour block can be so striking, but make sure that the colours clash perfectly. Think of brands like Alexander McQueen, Roksanda Ilincic and Dolce and Gabbana.

FM Issue 176 - 21

NOIHSAF

In the navy This season, black’s non identical twin, navy, makes a welcome return. It’s not much of a jump from black to navy, but it’s a jump I wish more people would make. There is a certain warmth to navy that black doesn’t have – it’s ever so slightly softer yet goes with more colours than black. A simple navy dress is transformed by adding neon shoes or clutch but can be classic with simple silver or gold. Brands like Michael Kors, Victoria Beckham and Roland Mouret are great for navy inspiration.

5

4

Shift shape Try something different when it comes to shape. It’s easy to fall into a pattern and buy similar shapes all the time when in fact there are some beautiful shapes that need to be tried. My favourites this season are full skirts and flowing draped dresses. Spaghetti straps have also made a huge comeback in up to date lingerie inspired silhouettes with lame finish which are feminine and flirty.

1. TALLY WEIJL, €29.95€ | 2. SILKY FEEL BLOUSE BY MAISON SCOTCH, EXCLUSIVE AT JUNCTION, THE PLAZA SHOPPING CENTRE, SLIEMA. €79.95 | 3. PEACOCKS, €33.50 | 4. NEW LOOK NAVY LACE SEQUIN SHEER PANEL DRESS, €39.99 | 5. 2JEWELS, €49 | 6. 2JEWELS, €59

Accessories Accessories complete your outfit. If you’ve gone for a dress in a single colour, wear something that pops with it: a necklace, belt, clutch or shoe. When you are being bold with your dress make sure the accessories are simple. A bold print does not need bold accessories, so wear sparkly stud earrings and keep shoes and bag to a single complementary colour. If you choose to work the metallic look, sometimes less is more. Jewellery isn’t always essential, and avoid anything patent or metallic with your bag and shoes. Sometimes matte does the trick. FM

2015 fashion resolutions Sort it New year, new start! Fold, hang and restore. You know that dress you’ve been meaning to take-in – take it in. A good wardrobe clear-out never takes as long as you think and is oddly therapeutic. Size matters A shocking 80 per cent of women wear the wrong bra size. Get yourself measured by a professional. “Wearing the correct bra size can do a lot more than lifting your bust,” explains Susanne Pentland, fit specialist at Freya. “When you slip on that perfectly fitting bra you will see much more of a flattering silhouette, your waist will be accentuated and your confidence boosted too.” Walk on the wild side Take a fashion risk every once in a while. Shake up your look and try something you may not usually wear. Don’t shy away from bright colours or unusual hem lengths – variety is the spice of life. Invest Splurge on wardrobe must-haves and avoid splashing out on trend driven pieces. You’ll get more wear out of classics that are forever in style, like the little black dress or a great pair of jeans.

Looking good It’s that time of the year again: the best dressed of 2014. These lovely ladies have caused much wardrobe envy in the past year. FM

Shop horror We’ve all be guilty of impulse shopping, like that hideous faux fur waistcoat you thought would give your wardrobe an instant boho update but which made you look like Chubaka. In 2015, avoid panic shopping, and if you’re not 100 per cent sure about a piece than leave it on the rail and walk away. You’ll thank yourself later.

EMMA STONE

Less is more Avoid the obvious and go subtle sexy with just a hint of skin on show, be it a slight slit in the skirt or a lace blouse with jeans. Highlighting one of your favourite features is so much more alluring than putting it all on display.

TAYLOR SWIFT

Body rockin’ While it’s important to look after ourselves and eat healthy, it’s also super important to give yourself a break and recognise the body you’re rocking is pretty awesome. Compliment yourself because inner confidence beats everything and anything you could buy on the high street.

Spotlight on

I

t has been an exciting year for British luxury fashion house Burberry. Known for its timeless trench coat and distinctive tartan pattern, the 158-year-old company has today established itself as an ‘old-young’ company. Like the iconic trench coat, the brand has evolved and adapted itself to keep its long history and culture alive among newer generations. Recognising technology as an intrinsic part of peoples’ lives, Burberry has intelligently bridged its online and offline markets without losing focus on the customer’s overall shopping experience. In fact, it has earned itself a reputation within the luxury fashion industry as a digital pioneer. With careful experimentation and a healthy dose of creativity, the company has been extremely successful at implementing its classic design and innovation into every single campaign. Burberry’s latest range of eyewear, the Trench Collection, highlights the brand’s craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail in a range of optical frames and sunglasses, inspired by the trench’s key features. Designed in Britain and made in Italy, the range of hand assembled frames is painted in the signature colour palette of warm caramel and honey, reminiscent to the coat’s exterior. Meanwhile, the grey stone and charcoal blacks reflect the buttons with smooth leather temple tips to echo the leather buckles of the trench. Burberry also incorporated its distinctive tartan check design from the coat’s lining in the form of bespoke nose pads and details on the inner and outer temples. Apart from luxury clothing, fragrances, eyewear and cosmetics, Burberry is also renowned for successfully recruiting young and rising stars like Suki Waterhouse, who recently fronted the brand’s cosmetics range, Cara Delevingne, who is the face of The Trench Collection, actress Emma Watson, and the 12-year-old son of David and Victoria Beckham, Romeo, who was the leading man in Burberry’s first ever Christmas ad, From London With Love. The quintessentially British fashion house will remain forever synonymous with the iconic garment, originally created by former drapers assistant and company founder Thomas Burberry in 1879. Designed to endure the trenches of World War I, the trench coat was created from a light and water resistant fabric called gabardine, which has seamlessly evolved from a functional military uniform to a fashion staple. What should we next expect from Burberry in 2015?

STYLE

The usual winter suspects Bianca Darmanin turns from a wool in sheep’s clothing to a leather lovely.

T

hey’ve got to be my all-time favourite winter textures – knitwear and leather. They’re hard to miss from any winter collection, and keep reinventing the colder season wardrobe with a mix of grunge-luxe. Knitwear and leather are worth stacking on and investing in. They’ll be hanging in your closet for quite some time, so bagging some good quality leather jackets or oversized knitted jumpers is key. Think textured motorcycle jackets in black or burgundy, oversized poloneck jumpers, midi knitted dresses, quilted aviator jackets, leather pants and pencil skirts, cable knit cardigans and chunky scarves.

FM Issue 176 - 37

STYLE

Versatility is unlimited as knitwear and leather are so easy to mix with anything else in your closet. From your favourite tee to some skinny jeans, a leather jacket will complement your outfit from morning to evening with a quick shoe switch. And if you would like to carry that favourite knitted jumper throughout the evening too, dress up with a mini, a maxi clutch bag and some heels for some comfy glamour. PHOTOGRAPHY

Seeking exposure Moving to London has allowed photographer Chris Agius Burke to develop his own aesthetic.

When did you hold your first camera? I dare say that I held my first camera at the age of 10. My sister had just got into modelling and her photos intrigued me. So I somehow got hold of my dad’s camera, loaded it with some film and started snapping away. My first subject was my poor dog. She would patiently sit there, while I dolled her up with clothes and accessories and took rather random pictures. I then used to take the film to my local stationery and get the film processed. With every processed film they would give me a free roll, so it was a pretty vicious cycle of snap after snap after snap. However, what really got me interested in photography was my first heartbreak. Back then, I was just dabbling away with my small digital camera and definitely not thinking this would progress into anything more than just a hobby. But after the break-up I wanted to prove to myself that I could be a better photographer then my ex, so I used to go around and take photos of pretty much anything that caught my eye. Eventually people started complimenting me on my work and telling me that I’ve got a natural eye for photography.

CHRIS AGIUS BURKE

Your first photo? Honestly I can’t remember. However, I can recall a very important photograph that I had taken. It was a black and white photograph of my brother at the kitchen table. He was unaware that I was taking his portrait but had captured him in a moment of utter exhaustion. Regretfully I don’t have that image anymore. Who or what inspired you to take up photography professionally? Photography for me was not something that I ever thought I would be doing as a profession. At a young age I wanted to become a doctor rather than a creative, so people weren’t a source of inspiration for me. What inspired me to keep pursuing photography was the idea of capturing a moment. It was the quick fix method of seeing a moment and capturing it on print.

YHPARGOTOHP

Why focus on fashion photography? Fashion photography was the logical extension to my days in the theatre. It allows me to create stories and characters through the medium of fashion photography. It also allows me to work with human subjects, rather the focusing on still lives or landscapes. Moving to London: are you happy you took that leap? Moving to London was a massive jump in the dark. I was rather naive to think that once I was in the big smoke doing my Masters degree in fashion photography, then it would be all plain sailing after that. Little did I know I would be facing a lot of closed doors. Having said that I wouldn’t go back and change a thing. Closed doors only make you stronger. What opportunities does London present for a young photographer? London is what you make of it. People from all over the world flock to London for the experiences and the opportunities, but you have to be open to experience everything the city has to offer. The opportunities to be creative and to grow both professionally and personally are endless: you just have to be open to them. You can meet many likeminded individuals who are willing to work together and to experiment to refine your craft: I would have missed out entirely on that had I not moved to London. The world of fashion photography is very overcrowded: how do you stand out? I think being an individual in the creative industry is a great thing, but realistically sometimes this industry requires you to conform to what clients request, as they are the ones who ultimately pay your bills. At first I was adamant on standing out of the crowd and doing my thing, and just creating for the sake of creating beautiful imagery. Ultimately the bank account ran dry and I had to conform. However through conforming I learnt what works and what doesn’t and I then refined what works and developed something which was my own. So my standing out of the crowd was a bit of a rollercoaster until people started taking me seriously enough to appreciate my own aesthetic. What aspects of Malta do you carry with you in London? Aesthetically I definitely carry my Maltese passion and drama. I don’t seem to do anything quietly. Even though I’ve been in London for the past four years, the vibrancy of Malta pulsates in everything that I do! In the early days of moving to London I used to use a lot of colour in my imagery – this I believe was a reflection of the general visual language of Malta. However these days the colours have cooled down, but I still maintain a sense of religious affiliation in my imagery: it adds some Malta drama to my work. FM

All the fun of the fair

PHOTO BY DENNIS SPOHR AND LISA EVOLUER

It all started with mock fashion shows in the living room. Nowadays, model Andrea Caruana still models for fun.

What first sparked your interest in fashion? When I was younger, I had this big bag of hand-me-down clothes and high heels that were way too big for me. When my cousins would come over, I would organise my version of a fashion show in our living room – we would all dress up and the rest of the family would come watch us. Since then, I’ve nurtured a love of clothes. I think clothes make you unique and allow you to express yourself. What do you remember of your first modelling experience? My first modelling experience was when I entered the SHOUT competition in 2008. I remember standing in front of a judging panel and feeling very nervous and shy. In the end, I wasn’t chosen but I still really enjoyed myself. What made you decide to take modelling seriously? When I’m on a photo shoot, I do my best to listen to what the client wants and get a great shot. Locally, I don’t think you can ever model on a full-time basis. Modelling is just something I love doing so whenever I have the opportunity to model, I grab it. And anyway, I’ll have some photos to show to my children and grandchildren when I’m old and wrinkled. What did your wardrobe look like when you were young? I loved skirts and dresses which my mum would make for me. I loved spinning and twirling – mum used to cut the skirts in a circle to get maximum twirl. I also loved mixing colours. Often, despite my protests, my mum would have to change what I was wearing because the colours didn’t match.

And what does it look like now? I organise all my clothes and shoes in a colour-coded manner. As for style, I think my present wardrobe is much darker than it was when I was younger. I have more plain and basic clothes. Also, whereas before I used to hate jeans, nowadays my wardrobe is full of them. I also have plenty of sneakers, which I love. What are your favourite trends for this season? I’m not particularly fond of following trends – I don’t like to wear what everybody else is wearing. I prefer to put on something which I’m comfortable in and which looks good on me. Are you a guerrilla shopper or do you plan your shopping trips carefully? I’m definitely a guerrilla shopper. If I plan my shopping trip, which is highly unlikely, I never manage to find anything that I really like and end up buying stuff which I don’t actually like and end up not wearing. I find that when you go shopping for something specific, you never find it – so I prefer to buy on impulse. January sales: yes or no? I’m not a fan of January sales, because you won’t really have a vast selection of sizes, and most of the time if I find something which I like, they probably won’t have my size which really annoys me. But if I do manage to find something I will definitely buy it. What is your current wardrobe favourite? My Jordans. I can wear them with anything. FM

INTERVIEW

What I know about style It’s red alert when model Madeleine Baldacchino walks into the room.

What first sparked your interest in fashion? Rather than fashion, I was always inclined to seek out the aesthetic beauty of everything, including fashion and the world of shows, clothes and models. Ever since I was young I was impressed by models and their strong poses and I always wondered if I too could be one of them. What do you remember of your first modelling experience? It was a shoot which I had as a finalist for Supernova. I was much younger and my whole family came with me. I was feeling quite nervous but I still got good shots which I’m still proud of today. What made you decide to take up modelling seriously? Modelling simply happened to me. I didn’t really put much effort as I got lucky and had very frequent opportunities which helped me improve my walk and poses and also define what my feeling of modelling really is. I don’t like pushing myself too hard as I believe modelling in such a small country can only get you to a certain level. Nonetheless, it’s a fantastic experience. Modelling isn’t just about clothes and accessories: what does the experience give you? I have to admit that since I started modelling a few years back, it has literally changed me. I was extremely shy and could not walk up to people as I lacked all sense of self-confidence. After having a lot of people believing in me, my character slowly developed into what it is today: confident and ready to accept criticism, which I use to improve myself.

What trends do you think suit you best? My style is always changing, but at the moment I’m all about black clothes, hats and midi-skirts which I think go really well with my pale skin and hourglass figure. I don’t like being seen just as a model with a vintage look but instead I like to experiment with various styles to be more versatile. Which is why I’m seeking to do new projects where I can input my opinion on what looks best on me. What item would you never wear? I never say I’m not going to wear a particular item as most probably I will still have to wear it during a fashion show. What is, for you, the difference between fashion and style? To me, style has to do with the whole package of a person. It’s useless if someone is wearing a designer outfit and it doesn’t suit them, or take a selfie with a trying-too-hard pose. It’s all these little details that portray how our style looks to others. Fashion, on the other hand, is what designers create every season, displaying their items as the most fashionable. As sceptical as I may sound I do enjoy watching and being part of fashion and I must admit some pieces are truly breathtaking. However I think we sometimes judge what looks best according to its price tag. I do admire people who know how to intertwine these two, making a strong image of themselves and not getting carried away with society’s opinions.

Tell us what you know about style. I’m currently designing a few pieces which barely have anything to do with my own personal style. However creating sketches of attire which just pop into my mind has taught me a lot about myself and my views on style. Personal style is much more valuable when it is timeless but develops for the better. Then again, style is relative to everyone: what may be stylish to me, might not be to others. FM

t’s the season that we’ve all been waiting for. And what’s not to like? There’s plenty of eating, drinking and making merry. We get a break from the office grind and we suddenly realise that, after all, we do like our colleagues, especially after a drink or two. We all get and give gifts. And the wardrobe is full and festive.

We’ve been celebrating Christmas and the New Year for thousands of years – so it’s only fair that our festive wardrobe carries some classical inspirations. This season, tailoring is all the rage. Think clean-cut trouser suits in block colours, sharp shirts over shorts and tomboyish outsized – yet still immaculately tailored – jackets. Your wardrobe can mean business but you can still have fun.

My name is red It takes a lot of courage to wear red. But not only – for some shades of red, you need a great figure, while for others, you need a confident walk. If you have what it takes to wear this bold colour, then go ahead and celebrate a red Christmas and New Year.

A light in the dark Batman Begins, the new dark fragrance for men released for the 75th anniversary of the superhero’s creation, is now available in stores. The contrasts in this bold fragrance reflect the duality of Batman. Bruce Wayne’s clean and gentle sophistication is expressed in the fragrance’s opening accords, comprising of citrus and floral aromas. As the scent’s heart notes of violet, pepper and coumarin rise from the heart of the fragrance, the dark ambivalent character of Batman emerges. The classic aura of Gotham city sets the base notes of cedar, sandalwood, amber and musk which ground the fragrance in opulent sophistication. Exclusively represented by Ta’ Xbiex Perfumery Limited, tel: 2133 1553.

Outrageously sensual Erotique is a truly exceptional celebrity fragrance. It harks back to the raunchy scents of the early 20th century but presents this in a contemporary style. It’s a sensual fragrance that has all the right components to make for something truly outrageous. Erotique opens with a wave of spice, namely cumin, which smells dry and dusty like golden sands. Pepper and coriander add a savoury sense of warmth and fizz, accentuating the rich spice of the top notes. In the base, Erotique displays rich stripes of woods. Sandalwood and gaic wood are the main players, each playing up their spicy, spiky facets leaving little room for the plush, creamy tones usually associated with such materials. The leather continues to crack the whip right through to the far dry down and creates a soft bed for the other notes to rest upon. Exclusively represented by Ta’ Xbiex Perfumery Limited, tel: 2133 1553.
