November
President’s Message As we enter into the season of maybe a bit cooler weather, November brings with it significant occasions toward which we could direct our thoughts and engage in an all-important practice of gratitude. Research in rewiring the traumatized brain points toward evidence that by instilling experiences of gratitude and strengthening the mind to readily respond to moments that inspire gratitude, that we and our clients can actually temper our mind’s tendency to grasp the negative. Our work with clients, students, and other practitioners is enhanced when we readily practice that which we know can transform the by-products of trauma. Having said this, let us look at what the month of November has to offer us in the way of opportunities to fully experience personal gratitude. November 11. Veterans Day. We honor and express gratitude to Veterans who served in the military. FMHCA’s Military Service Committee prides itself in drawing attention to the ways in which members can be best prepared to serve Veterans returning from the Theater of Battle and by raising best public awareness of Military Suicide. We continue to engage with the Florida Legislature as to how to enhance Mental Wellness services to Veterans. There are opportunities to work in gratitude by volunteering to serve on this committee.
November 18. Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. We can be thankful for a wealth of knowledge and practices to effectively reach out and be present with our clients who are left behind and grieving the death of a loved one by suicide. There are events scheduled throughout the state. Thanksgiving Day. Rich in family tradition, customs, and connectedness. Humans are created with what Frank Hannah refers to as Inbornintentions or what we commonly refer to as our basic need to survive: Connectedness, Autonomy, and Safety. If Thanksgiving and then the December holidays threaten one or more of these, then we have the opportunity to reframe and rejoin with family and friends. Looking Ahead Government Relations is kicking off plans to Barnstorm the Legislature after the first of the year. There are several key issues which we will be taking up with our Legislators; the opioid crisis, Veteran issues, and, further down the line, plans to introduce legislation that will enhance and protect our profession in changing times ahead. We will need volunteers to conduct research and assist in promulgating a broad-ranging bill in the 2019 legislature. Finally, best wishes to all members of this wonderful organization FMHCA. We are here to serve your needs.
