Erica Whitfield, MACP, LMHC - President I’m not going to address you as counselors, nor as mental health counselors, for that matter. Instead, I’m going to address you as clinical mental health counselors. Why? Because you’re not just counselors. Yes, you can help clients pursue important life goals related to their careers, lifestyles, and general wellness, but you’re also specialists who can diagnose and treat mental disorders, unlike school counselors, career counselors, rehabilitation counselors, credit counselors, camp counselors, or any other type of counselor. Just like some—but not all-psychologists are clinical psychologists, and some—but not all--social workers are clinical social workers, so some—but not all—counselors are clinical mental health counselors. Why is this so important? It's important because there are still professionals in the mental health field, in government, in the courts, and in the general public who think that licensed counselors comprise the lowest rung on the ladder of behavioral healthcare. But they’re wrong. You are specialists with advanced training beyond basic counseling skills. You have earned your place at the table in the American healthcare system. You have something unique and powerful to offer. You play a vital and instrumental role in the welfare of the American public. You work hard, you care deeply, you sacrifice, and you serve with distinction, professionalism, honor, empathy, and expertise. FMHCA’s annual conference is your time to shine. Florida Mental Health Counselors Association (FMHCA) is the State Chapter of American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA). FMHCA is the only organization dedicated exclusively to meeting the professional needs of Florida’s Licensed Mental Health Counselors.

Its sole purpose is to promote the profession of mental health counseling and the needs of our members.

Colin A. Ross, M.D completed medical school at the University of Alberta and his psychiatry training at the University of Manitoba in Canada. He is a Past President of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, and is the author of 200 papers and 29 books. He has spoken widely throughout North America and Europe, and in China, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. He has been a keynote speaker at many different conferences, and has reviewed for over 30 different professional journals. Dr. Ross is the Director of hospital-based Trauma Programs in Denton, Texas, Torrance, California and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Ross’ books cover a wide range of topics. His clinical books focus on trauma and dissociation and include: Dissociative Identity Disorder. Diagnosis, Clinical Features and Treatment of Multiple Personality, Second Edition (1997); Schizophrenia: Innovations in Diagnosis and Treatment (2004); The Trauma Model: A Solution to the Problem of Comorbidity in Psychiatry (2007); Trauma Model Therapy: A Treatment Approach for Trauma Dissociation and Complex Comorbidity (2009); and Structural Dissociation: A Proposed Modification of the Theory (2013). Dr. Ross has published a series of treatment outcome studies in peer-reviewed journals, which provide evidence for the effectiveness of Trauma Model Therapy. Many of his papers involve large series of cases, with original research data and statistical analyses, including a paper entitled ‘Trauma and Dissociation in China” in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Besides his clinical psychiatry interests, Dr. Ross has published papers and books on cancer and human energy fields, as well as literary works including essays, fiction, poetry and screenplays. He has several different hobbies including travel.

Topic: A Treatment Approach for Trauma, Dissociation and Complex Comorbidity Description: In this talk, Dr. Ross will explain the principles and techniques of his Trauma Model Therapy (TMT).

TMT was developed for treatment of people with complex PTSD and dissociative disorders, including their extensive comorbidity. This often includes depression, borderline personality disorder, substance abuse, panic disorder, OCD, eating disorders and somatoform disorders. TMT can be adapted for people with less severe trauma and less complex mental health problems and is suitable for all practice settings. It is based on Dr. Ross’ Trauma Model, which is a comprehensive, scientifically testable theory of the relationship between psychological trauma and a wide range of different disorders, addictions and self-defeating behaviors. Dr. Ross will explain the principles of TMT including: the problem of attachment to the perpetrator; the locus of control shift; the problem is not the problem; just say ‘no’ to drugs; addiction is the opposite of desensitization; and the victim-rescuer-perpetrator triangle. The two core features of the therapy are a focus on conflicted, ambivalent attachment and the self-blame and self-hatred arising from the locus of control shift. These two aspects of the model are based on the biology of mammalian attachment and developmental psychology. The techniques of TMT will be illustrated through case examples. The therapy involves a blend of cognitive, systems, behavioral, experiential and psychodynamic techniques within a unified theory.

To provide a forum for questions and discussion concerning trauma.

a person. Educational component on how trauma impacts a person and what a realistic future looks like for someone who has gone through trauma. Hear from a survivor of human sex trafficking. 2) Learn Clinical Skills regarding how to work with a trauma survivor. Domestic Violence, Human Sex Trafficking, Military PTSD all face the daunting task of recovering from trauma. Explore ways to interact with trauma survivors and how the healing journey progresses. 3) Question and Answer period for unexplored questions. Come prepared to ask your questions and listen as a panel gives their understanding of what healing looks like and how it is attained.

SALON F: Topic: Unspoken Family Trauma - Reverse Culture Shock Presenter: Kathie Erwin, PhD, EdD & Kelly Erwin, BA Description: Families returning from international military, humanitarian or corporate assignments face readjustments for which most are unprepared. They feel guilty or ungrateful to complain about challenges of cultural reintegration. The distress of the children and teens may be ignored until the crisis occurs as the family is torn between two worlds. Discover how counselors can recognize and respond to these traumas while supporting the family system shifts.

Course Goals & Objectives: 1) Identify cultural reintegration issues for families in long term deployments. 2) Evaluate how Reverse Cultural Shock impacts the family system. 3)Develop family system counseling strategies to deal with the impact of Reverse Culture Shock.

11:45AM-1:15PM | 1.5 Clock Hours RSVP EVENT “LUNCH & LEARN” SALON A & B: Government Relations Panel Topic: Strategies in Advocating for the Mental Health Profession, Addiction, and Other Mental Health Concerns that Face FMHCA Members and Mental Well-being for All Floridians.

Presenters: Melissa Larkin-Skinner, Cindy Wall, LMHC, Aaron Norton, LMHC, LMFT, MCAP, CRC, CFMHE Description: Panel Discussion led by the GRC Chairman pertaining to: 1) current issues facing FMHCA members, 2) protecting and advocating for our profession as a whole, and 3) the value of collaboration among grass roots and follow up to get legislation passed.

Course Goals & Objectives: To educate attendees on the legislative process, developing a platform, and setting an agenda.

Participants will leave with knowledge and ability to reach out to their personal legislators and maintain follow up communication regarding issues facing MHCs in Florida Objectives: 1) Point to specific legislative issues being supported by the GRC in the 2019 legislature. 2) Engage participants in the task of contacting personal legislators, including the Washington, DC delegation through the use of social media and direct email. 3) Educate participants on future concerns for MH Counselors, and how to engage with personal legislators to cosponsor bills that are currently before congress.

9:45 AM—11:45 AM | 2 Clock Hours SALON A&B: Topic: From Crisis to Solutions in Treatment Community Presenters: Jonathan Belolo LCSW, John Hulick MS, Joe Bryan, Steven Farnsworth, Mark Woods, Micah Robbins Description: The United States is in the midst of an opioid epidemic that has lead to dramatic changes in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health industry. Florida has been in the headline in regards to both the crisis and solution towards the opioid epidemic. Due to this increased media attention, local law enforcement, medical practitioners, treatment centers and task forces have come together to create a solution and improve policies. The initial conversations in regards to improving regulations and standards for substance abuse began at a coalition level. Organizations such as Palm Beach County Substance Abuse Coalition (PBCSAC), Delray Beach Code Enforcement, Florida Association of Recovery Residence (FARR), South East Florida Recovery Advocates (SEFRA), Palm Beach County Sober Homes Task Force and local treatment centers have all been instrumental in the advocacy and development of regulation and ethical standards.

Course Goals & Objectives: 1) A brief overview of the new levitative changes and regulatory landscapes. 2)Primary components of the challenges that the substance abuse industry faced. Introduction and understanding of recovery residences within the recovery oriented system of care. 3)Understanding how county-based approaches can influence statewide solutions.

4) Educate clinicians on navigating the everchanging field of substance abuse and mental health. 5)Involve participants in a dialogue in facilitating a solution based approach towards their community.

SALON D: Topic: Filicide - How Hidden Hostility at Home Leads to Murder Presenter: C. Dwight Bain, NCC, LMHC Description: Is home the safest place? Not for children living under the risk of Filicide, or parents who murder their own children. The pattern shows a stable person with no violent mental health history, who quietly plans and then murders their children followed by their own suicide. This is a grim psychological reality for counselors and teachers; because the deadly violence is hidden under the surface. Do you know the subtle warning signs of Filicide to protect children from their parents in these high-risk homes? Are you equipped to help survivors rebuild and recover from the trauma of parents who murder their own family? Each attendee will receive a comprehensive guide of warning signs to protect these most innocent victims of hidden abuse.

Course Goals & Objectives: 1) Explain the common psychological triggers leading parents toward filicide, homicide or suicide . 2) Differentiate between hostile and hidden forms of domestic violence against children. 3) Recovery planning for filicide survivors and extended family caretakers.

SALON E: Topic: Domestic Violence, Human Sex Trafficking, Military PTSD and the way Forward in Trauma Informed Care Presenter: Dr. Patrick Nave, LMHC, MCAP, CET, ABD & Diena Cannavino, CAC Description: Doc and Rainey will be presenting an interactive workshop/seminar/talk on the unique dynamics of trauma recovery. Diena will share her story of being sex trafficked from the age of three and how it impacts her today and Doc will share what trauma informed care looks like and how one can move forward in their healing. Examples will be used, current research explored and tools given.

SALON D: Student Panel Topic: Overcoming Challenges After Graduation Presenter: Layda Penton, MA, Laura Giraldo NCC, CCMHC, Dr. Linton Hutchinson , Scott Jones, LMHC, CAP, Qualified Supervisor Description: During this roundtable workshop, the presenters will discuss the process of becoming a registered mental health counseling intern. There are several steps to becoming a registered mental health counseling intern in the state of Florida and the board of social work, mental health counseling, and marriage and family counseling has established requirements that must be met prior to obtaining a registered intern license. Obtaining a Qualified Clinical Supervisor is an important part of the application process and at times it can be difficult to understand what professionals in the field are qualified to be supervisors. Registered interns may also face ethical dilemmas throughout the supervision process and their registered intern period. It is important that registered in-terns are aware of the resources available to process ethical dilemmas. This workshop will focus on the registered intern process, qualified supervisor requirements, and ethical dilemmas that registered interns may face.

Course Goals & Objectives: This roundtable discussion will provide participants with information on the process required by the state of Florida to become a registered mental health counseling intern. Tips on how to obtain a qualified supervisor (approved by the 491 board) will be discussed. We will discuss the supervision process.

Ethical dilemmas that registered interns may face in the field will be discussed, along with the licensure exam required in the state of FL. SALON E: Military Panel Topic: Military Sexual Trauma Symposium Presenter: Ellsworth "Tony" Williams, CEO/President Veterans Counseling Veterans Inc, Tampa Greg Dawson: PhD Psychology and LMHC, Professor at Troy University, Orlando, Carlos Garcia (Marine): PsyD Clinic Psychology , Private Practice , Tampa ,Tammy Foster (Air Force): PhD Organizational Management, Tampa Maria Giuliana (Navy): LMHC, MFLC, Jacksonville , Brittany Howell (JAHVA): PsyD Clinical Psychology, James A Haley VA, Tampa Description: The symposium will consist of panelists familiar with the military culture and military sexual trauma. The panel will provide personal insights and lessons learned when counseling military sexual trauma survivors Course Goals & Objectives: 1) Identify risk factors and mindset military sexual trauma survivors. 2) Identify ways the Mental health provider can provide a safe environment for military sexual trauma survivors. 3)Familiarize audience with the military culture and discuss research data for military sexual trauma. 4) Discuss evidence based treatments and strategies for military sexual trauma survivors

1:15PM-3:15PM | 2 Clock Hours SALON A&B: Topic: What Mental Health Professionals Need to Know About Medical Marijuana: A Clinical-Forensic Perspective.

Presenter: Aaron Norton, LMHC, LMFT, MCAP, CRC, CFMHE, CCMHC Description: Medical marijuana is now broadly or partially legalized in 28 states, though it remains illegal under federal law.

Variation in state and local laws can create confusion for mental health professionals. Additionally, the expansion of medical marijuana raises a large number of questions for mental health professional in both clinical and forensic settings, such as: What does the law say about medical marijuana in my state? What is the difference between medical delta-9-tetrahydracannabinol (THC) and medical cannabidiol (CBD)? How do I know whether my client is using medical marijuana therapeutically vs. abusing it? What does the research say about what conditions medical marijuana might be helpful for, and which ones it can make worse? What are the risks, side effects, and potential drawbacks of medical marijuana? How do I know my client is overmedicated? If my client uses medical marijuana, can employers discriminate against him or her? What do I do if a client is referred to me for substance abuse treatment but is legally taking prescribed marijuana? This presentation seeks to provide attendees with answers to some of these questions, and resources for others.

Course Goals & Objectives: 1)Identify potential benefits and drawbacks of medical marijuana. 2)Review the law in Florida as it applies to medical marijuana. 3) Identify best practices for working with clients who are prescribed medical marijuana.

SALON D: Topic: Tobacco Use Disorder: The Neglected Addiction Presenter: Andree Aubrey, LCSW; CTTS Description: Tobacco users with mental illnesses and substance use disorders are more likely to die from tobacco related diseases than their behavioral health condition. Although treatment of tobacco dependency is the most cost-effective and morbidityreducing of 30 preventive services, it has the lowest delivery rate.

Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of tobacco dependence is often overlooked in mental health and addictions treatment. This workshop will examine the benefits of tobacco cessation in improving depression, anxiety, affect and overall psychological quality of life and improvements in long term abstinence rates from alcohol or illicit drugs. Participants will be practice successful, evidence based clinical interventions and explore strategies for addressing institutional barriers for incorporating treatment of tobacco use disorder along with other behavioral health services. Participants also will be trained to implement a guideline based brief intervention which requires only 3-5 minutes and significantly improves client willingness to make a quit attempt.

Course Goals & Objectives: 1) Understand extremely high tobacco use prevalence rates and the related disease and economic burdens for individuals with behavioral health conditions within a health disparities framework. 2) Implement the guideline based brief intervention which significantly improves client readiness to make a tobacco quit attempt.

Assessment of the need for ESAs requires knowledge of disability, the role of ESAs in symptom reduction and quality of life, the difference between ESAs and service animals, ethical considerations for recommendation of ESAs, contraindications for ESAs, and the law and ESAs. This program will aid clinicians in obtaining this knowledge and feeling prepared to address client requests for letters documenting the need for ESAs. 3:30PM-6:30PM | 3 Clock Hours (Continued) SALON F: Part 2: The Three-legged Chair: The Third Leg of Trauma Informed Care - Compassion Fatigue Prevention and Compassion Rediscovery Presenter: Heather Dziewlski, MSW, LCSW Description: As organizations focus on becoming increasingly trauma informed in practice and policy, the concept of Compassion Fatigue in all forms is often summed up with the phrase “go take care of yourself.� While self-care is vital for professionals working with trauma, organizations have a responsibility to address the issue of compassion fatigue from an expanded context. Organizations may inadvertently blame individuals for not doing enough selfcare, which can create a re-traumatization of the workforce.

This workshop will focus on Compassion Fatigue Prevention and Rediscovery strategies at the individual and organization level. These strategies are of no cost, yet do require a shift in organization practice. Without this needed shift, individuals and organizations do not have a true Trauma Informed System of Care. Participants will leave this workshop with specific, yet simple next steps that can be immediately implemented at the personal and organization level. This workshop is relevant to those in direct service, supervisors, administrators and policy makers.

Course Goals & Objectives: 1) Participants will define and describe the three key prongs necessary for an Organization to identify as Trauma Informed. 2) Participants will name and compare the three primary categories of Compassion Fatigue. 3) Participants will understand the role of a Trauma Informed Organization to address three elements of Compassion Fatigue in the workforce. 4) Participants will identify stress indicators within themselves and develop a strategy for managing symptoms of compassion fatigue.

Part 3: Family Dynamics - How PTSD Affects Family of First Responders and Military.

Presenter: Sandra Pickrell Baker, MA, MSW, RSW

Description: Military members and first responders to catastrophic events directly experience the impact of trauma.

This may lead to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or other types of secondary stress response.

PTSD often brings complications such as personality and behavioural changes. Previous research has demonstrated there is a need to be concerned with treating the primary sufferers of PTSD. However, there is also a chain reaction in the relationship dynamics of the family. The family unit themselves develop symptoms of PTSD, and manifest their own secondary traumatic stress response. Course Goals & Objectives: 1) The primary question for this study was: What are the lived experiences of the female partners of Canadian military veterans diagnosed with PTSD? 2) Secondary questions addressed the relationship between the experience of the diagnosis of PTSD and daily life. Specifically, what coping strategies and supportive resources did these women utilize? 3)This study was situated within an interpretive/constructivist framework. In this study we read about women, who while dealing with ambiguous loss, must adjust and adapt their lives around the needs of their partner, who is struggling with the symptoms of PTSD. 4) The complications of this change in relationship led women to deself and face the difficulties of secondary traumatic stress, such as depression and hyper vigilance. 5) There is a need for future and more in depth research into family functioning when faced with this phenomenon. Specifically, does the adjusting and adapting actually enable the veteran to stay ill and remain defined by his diagnosis? What are the long-term implications for the children who are being reared in these circumstances. How can these women be enabled to gain meaningful support in order to cope with daily life?

Keynote: Dr. Tania Diaz Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Diaz is licensed as a psychologist, a qualified board approved clinical supervisor for mental health counselors, and HeartMath Certified Trainer. Currently, Dr. Diaz is the Program Coordinator for Mental Health Counseling students at Albizu University, where she teaches graduate courses and supervises student clinicians. Dr. Diaz has appeared on numerous radio and television programs discussing topics on the importance of mental health hygiene, heart rhythm technology and self-care as well as other topics related to ADHD, Self-Harm, and Bullying. She gives lectures on topics deserving continuing education credits and volunteers her time as a way to give back to the community.

Additionally, she owns a boutique private practice in Miami Lakes, has over 20 years of clinical experience in the mental health field, and recently became an honored member of the Trademark Top Doctors of America in 2018.

Dr. Diaz consistently presents at annual conferences and has participated in the field assessment trials of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM5) where her contribution are noted on page 912. Personally, she strongly believes one must embody what we teach and engages in daily meditation, yoga, and weight training. She prides herself in not having all the answers and open to learning from everyone, especially children. She vows to remain curious about life which leads her to explore, travel, and seek out that which remains unknown.

In addition to this, the political climate in the United States is largely unwelcoming, particularly under the current administration with the removal of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), highlighting the importance of advocacy for asylum-seeking clients.

Culturally competent counseling interventions are needed in order to appropriately serve this population. Counselors should also be aware of possible barriers to counseling this population.

The impact of parental incarceration on children in this country is severe. Parental incarceration is considered an adverse childhood experience associated with deep trauma, shame, and social stigma. This poster presentation will focus on the specific need for mental healthcare for adolescents of incarcerated parents and will display various techniques, interventions, and assessments which show promise in supporting this specific population.

EASEL 11: Presentation Title: Diagnosing and Treating Cluster-B Personality Disorders Presenter: Malaya Monk Co-Presenter: Kendrick Turner and Noel Magwood University: Florida State University Description: The overarching characteristics of individuals with Cluster-B personality disorders can make them difficult for clinicians to diagnose and treat (Fox 2015). Cluster-B Personality disorders include Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD), and Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) (Leichsenring et al., 2016). Individuals with Cluster-B personalities have distinct interpersonal styles that pose difficulties when engaging in psychotherapy. They may exhibit anger towards the therapist and have difficulties trusting the therapeutic process. This often leads to lack of attendance, difficulties forming a healthy therapeutic relationship, and early treatment termination (Gerhart, Ronan, Russ, & Seymour, 2013). BPD and ASPD have the largest research base. However, the number of evidencebased practices (EBP’s) for ASPD, NPD, and HPD is lacking . EBP’s are determined through rigorous research methodologies and are supposedly the best practices to use for a certain disorder (Jones-Smith, 2012). The current study will review literature on EBP’s, treatment recommendations, and issues surrounding the differentiation between the Cluster-B personalities.

EASEL 10: Presentation Title: Decreasing the Negative Stigma of Cluster B Personality Disorders: A Critical Review of Prevalence, Etiology, and Prognosis Presenter: Kendrick Turner Co-Presenter: Malaya Monk and Noel Magwood University: Florida State University Description: Mental Health Professionals are currently engaged in a well intentioned dialogue to end the negative stigma attached to mental illness. Much of this dialogue is centered on the personality disorders, in particular the Cluster-B (Antisocial, Narcissistic, Borderline and Histrionic) or drama personalities. Unfortunately, there is some unintentional reinforcement of the negative stigma as some Cluster-B misrepresentations have been inserted into the conversation. For example, Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) is often portrayed as a personality that lacks social skills, the Narcissistic Personality (NPD) is often characterized as a personality that is grandiose exclusively in it’s positive views on self, the Borderline Personality (BPD) is thought to be caused by sexual abuse in childhood, and the Histrionic Personality (HPD) is often thought of as an emotional woman. Such prevalent personality mischaracterizations could influence how clinicians treat or diagnose a client. In addition, these fallacious characterizations could serve to reinforce the negative stigmas of individuals who are diagnosed with a Cluster-B personality disorder. In congruence with the overarching goal of decreasing negative stigma, this literature review aims at dispelling some of the well intentioned mischaracterizations (including the examples provided) of these personality disorders by exploring the current literature on the prevalence, etiology and prognosis.

EASEL 17: Presentation Title: Results of the 2017 Counseling Research Child Sexual Abuse Study Presenter: Chelsea Fullilove University: Florida Gulf Coast University Description: This study investigated the leading risk factors that account for child sexual abuse (CSA) in the Bay Islands of Honduras. The lack of financial means, historical predispositions (or susceptibility), and the cultural attitudes and social behaviors create risky environments and premature experiences in formative years. Social norms have encouraged multi-fathering among men and leave long lasting intergenerational effects including academic achievement and poverty. The cycle of poverty contributes to economic instability and often women are raising children without the father’s involvement.

Children maintain the silence likely due to shame or resulting from an anxious attachment with a caregiver. Researchers have referred to this as a culture of silence inherent within the society (Jeremiah, Quinn, and Alexis, 2017). The perpetrator, the non-abusing adult, and the victim all remain quiet. Others have referred to this as familial entrapment which perpetuates the underreporting of CSA and a gap between the actual instances of abuse and those reported (Pilgrim, 2017). Although many factors play an interconnected role, narrowing the distinct themes allowed for disseminating factors and constructing specific interventions. These risk factors for CSA include living in poverty, exposure to disease, lack of access to education, multicultural implications such gender norms, and the contributing factors that end childhood altogether (including child marriage and children who birth and rear other children). When interpreting the themes, the risk factors were studied to provide insight into what has been conducive within the context to permit the continuation of CSA. The emerging relationships described in this analysis are in no way exclusive, but rather a starting point for further research to be made. After grasping these concepts from an amplified environment, participants can draw similarities to children within our own communities.

Annually, there are six million children and “many more unreported” cases of CSA within the United States (Institute of Medicine and National Research Council, 2014). Important ways this information can be implemented is through advocacy and screening. EASEL 21: Presentation Title: Altruism in the Workplace: Correlation Between Teamwork and Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCBs)Presenter: Jessica Gomez University: Carlos Albizu University Description: The study of Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCBs) is increasing due to recent research linking them to key components in an organization, including job satisfaction and productivity (Brief, 1998). OCBs are voluntary actions done in the workplace with the earnest intent of benefitting others or the organization (Allen & Rush, 1998). This study was designed to examine the relationship between Organizational Citizenship Behaviors and Teamwork.

The present results come from a larger study addressing the gap in literature relating OCBs to individual characteristics, including teamwork. Convenient sampling was used to recruit 323 participants to take a 15-minute online Google forms survey.

After reviewing the informed consent and completing a brief demographics portion, the survey consisted of 19 items that measured the two constructs addressed. The results from this study indicated a significant positive correlation between OCBs and Teamwork. Equity is a new topic being investigated in relation to the workplace. It is theorized that organizational justice, or equity in the workplace, is also suggestive of job satisfaction. Inequity, which is when an individual perceives their input-output ratio to be inequivalent to that of another person, has been found to be associated with job dissatisfaction (Brief, 1998). An individual’s perspective on equity in the workplace has long been theorized to be associated with their emotional intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) has been defined as an emotionalintuitive capacity (Cooper & Sawaf, 1997). EI could potentially be a contributing factor for better job performance through demonstrations of empathy and sympathy. For this study, 323 participants were conveniently sampled, and were asked to complete a questionnaire concerning Equity and Emotional Intelligence. However, members of the LGBTQ+ community still face discrimination and barriers.

There are differences in each LGBTQ+ experience, especially in a society that has a lack of understanding of the differences between gender and sexuality. Additionally, there is a lack of training and competence for LGBTQ+ issues within the mental health counseling profession.

Transgender individuals face frequent discrimination, and microaggressions in conjunction to dealing with psychological distress brought about by gender identity. They are at higher risk for anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and suicide. Mental health professionals must approach the therapeutic alliance and framework with an affirmative perspective. Trans-affirmative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TA-CBT) is the most effective counseling approach for transgender clients. TA-CBT counselors keep in mind the trans-specific issues and risks, while recognizing and modifying problematic ways of thinking, and challenging negative thoughts.

Duchrow University: Florida Atlantic University Description: The purpose of this study is to identify areas of importance for practicing rehabilitation counselors in a state-federal agency and to evaluate the effect they have on consumer outcomes. In this study, perceived level of importance scores from the Knowledge Validation Inventory-Revised (KVI-R) will be assessed among undergraduate and graduate degree earning VRCs. Then, scores will be further evaluated to determine which rehabilitation knowledge domains are significant in a state-federal organization. The information gained from this study can support the empirical basis for the development or revision of rehabilitation counseling professional development practices in educational settings and national organizations. Moreover, the findings can be used to identify Florida VRC training areas required for achieving positive employment outcomes for consumers. The results of this study will lend significant information to stakeholders on the importance and educational significance of proper training. This program assisted eligible women in obtaining U-Visas to remain in the United States, while assisting police with pursuing a case against the perpetrators. In 2014, some immigrant women entering the United States that were fleeing domestic violence in their home countries became eligible to apply for asylum protection following a ruling from the Board of Immigration Appeals. These laws greatly enhanced protections for immigrant women facing domestic violence.

Course Goals & Objectives: 1) Drastic changes to immigration policy were implemented soon after President Trump entered office as part of sweeping reforms which focused heavily on immigration enforcement rather than humanitarian considerations. One of these changes came as a directive from Attorney General Jeff Sessions in June 2018 that eliminated protection of domestic violence survivors as a category for asylum, leaving women applying under this program in free-fall. While women from diverse cultural backgrounds apply for this program, a large number come from Central American countries which are facing a crisis in violence against women. 2) Women fleeing domestic violence and entering the United States have experienced layers of trauma, which include domestic violence which may include sexual violence, possible violence on their journey to the United States, as well as continued trauma in the United States, including the fear of being sent to their home countries where they will be killed by their partner.

A trauma-informed care model is crucial in effectively working with these women. 3) This presentation seeks to identify best practices in working with this population, as well as to offer policy recommendations.

Every 62 minutes someone dies as a direct result of their eating disorder. TMT was developed for treatment of people with complex PTSD and dissociative disorders, including their extensive comorbidity. This often includes depression, borderline personality disorder, substance abuse, panic disorder, OCD, eating disorders and somatoform disorders. TMT can be adapted for people with less severe trauma and less complex mental health problems and is suitable for all practice settings. Having explained the principles of TMT in his plenary talk, Dr. Ross will illustrate the techniques of TMT

through case examples. The therapy involves a blend of cognitive, systems, behavioral, experiential and psychodynamic techniques within a unified theory.

Presenters: Vanessa Snyder, Ph.D. and Amy Kenney, MA Description: Human trafficking, mass shootings, hate crimes, and terrorism have left a stain on the fabric of our society.

Trauma is pervasive and greatly impacts the lives of individuals, families, communities and organizations. Over half of the global human population will experience a traumatic event during their lifetime (Atowoli, Stein, Koenen & McLaughlin, 2015). Many more suffer from secondary stress, leaving the already limited supply of clinicians on the verge of burnout. A comprehensive approach is needed to build capacity in this field of recovery. Richmont Graduate University is uniquely positioned to systematically address every aspect of trauma healing and recovery, including direct trauma care, training trauma informed clinicians, and addressing secondary stress and burnout threatening those in the helping fields.

Course Goals & Objectives: 1) In order to move the needle on solving complex trauma issues related to victims and those who care for them; counselors, caregivers, first responders, and others on the front line must successfully identify and treat trauma as well as effectively deal with the resulting secondary traumatic stress. 2) This is critical as 13% of counselors are at high-risk of compassion fatigue or professional burnout (Sprang, Clark & Whitt- Woosley, 2007).

Although staff working with trauma survivors is often exceptionally committed to the work, this dedication comes with a cost. An example of this price tag is reflected in 80% of aid workers claiming to have experienced symptoms of distress (Brown & Nowlan, 2016). 3)The clinician absorbs the trauma symptoms they are treating on a daily basis. Often times,

trauma is at the root of ongoing systemic issues found in families, churches, schools, communities, and organizations.

In order to make a significant impact on reducing or eliminating the negative effects of trauma, it is vital to recognize the toll that trauma has on both victims and caregivers alike. Richmont is taking a multipronged approach to addressing trauma in order to maximize our impact on solving the dilemma of effectively treating trauma in our society.

It is possible that more trauma is experienced than resolved each day and, if so, we are moving backwards as we reach forwards in our desire to help. We’ve been doing so for a very long time. There is not, and will never be, sufficient helping professionals to address trauma globally. The only effective path forward is a paradigm shift from the authority of experts to the innate wisdom of individuals and communities.

The solution to the 1 billion is the 1 billion themselves. They are our most abundant resource and, it turns out, our most effective.

Course Goals & Objectives: 1) Those who have experienced the same or similar trauma, and have learned the necessary knowledge and skills, are in the best possible position to hear and understand each other. The chance to fully open up in a one-to-one setting and process their unique and subjective experiences is deeply healing for both the narrator and the listener. 2) Our research shows the efficacy of a nondiagnostic, non-pathologizing, peer-to-peer model that provides a safe space and predictable structure in which life issues can be explored and the trauma story can be told. 3) We offer communities the opportunity for their members to benefit from a non-proprietary, generic approach to increasing individual and community resilience, which they can ultimately own and replicate. While our program draws from a diversity of therapeutic “best practices”, it is primarily based on a set of unique key concepts used in Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR), a person-centered, evidence-based approach to the resolution of trauma. In addition to being non-medical, avoiding the stigma of mental health that keeps some people away, the program is also non-religious and adaptable within the contexts of cultural and literacy needs.
