ABCs of Leadership: Leaders Must Be SelectedSelected and Developed Acts 6:3
Good leadership responds effectively to the need for more leaders and workers. Apparently, no one took a vote to determine the identity of these people. The leaders were chosen. The leadership of the early church practiced the ABCs of leadership. They: Attracted leaders. Believed in them. Chose them. Developed them. The apostles had specific qualifications in mind for the leaders they wanted, and chose men who were … 1. Known from their sphere of influence – “seek out from among you.” 2. People who could serve on a team – “seven men.” 3. Trusted among the people – “of good reputation.” 4. Empowered for the task - “full of the Holy Spirit.” 5. Competent and intelligent – “full of …wisdom.” 6. Responsible – “whom we may appoint over this business.”
Scriptural Readings for 2016 Theme: Living like Jesus is LORD! Yearly Scriptures: JAMES & First and Second PETER Peter and James were eyewitnesses of the earthly ministry and two of the closest disciples of Jesus Christ. JAMES the brother of our Lord is a late convert. He became a believer after an appearance of the resurrected Christ. PETER was one of the first disciples to be called by Jesus and walked with Him for over three years before the crucifixion. THE present call by James and Peter is for clarity to a living faith as taught by JESUS; a faith which expects believers to love, serve, give, and advocate "for the least of these" until the Kingdom comes on earth in its fullness. CONSEQUENTLY, our theme for 2016 is, “Living like JESUS is LORD!" Our intent is to encourage Friendship Missionary Baptist Church membership, local community, state partners and global missional outreach teams to move beyond our theme of 2015, "Believing in JESUS as LORD," to "LIVING LIKE JESUS IS LORD" in 2016! THE EPISTLE OF JAMES: 5 Chapters, 108 Verses, 2309 Words The letter was addressed to Christian Jews of the Dispersion the 12 tribes scattered abroad in other countries. Jewish historian, Josephus says, "James was stoned to death in 62AD. This suggests a date for this Epistle before 50AD, which implies that James is one of the earliest writings in the New Testament. During this time, Christians were still meeting in synagogues, "FOR if there come in your assembly (synagogue),” James 2:2 KJV who were suffering special privations and difficulties. This letter expresses a need for practical religious works as an outward sign of faith. JAMES deals with many subjects in the epistle but everyone is a practical expression of (faith) Christian living. A practical expression of faith is the first application of the Gospel to the everyday life of the early Christian community. REFERENCE HOLMAN BIBLE KJV JAMES the half brother of Jesus Christ is the author of this epistle, “I, James, am a slave of God and the Master Jesus, writing to the twelve tribes scattered to Kingdom Come: Hello!” (James 1:1, MSG). James who remanded in the background during Jesus’ lifetime and after an appearance of Jesus Christ was converted after Easter. “Then (Jesus) appeared to James; then all the apostles” (I Corinthians 15:7, NRSV). As the Lord’s brother James became the head of the primitive church, Biblical references from the Heritage Bible: ! Acts 12:17, "Tell James and the brothers what happened." He (Peter) left them and went to another place. 1

Galatians 2:9, Recognizing my calling had been given by God, James, Peter, and John- the pillars of the church- shook hands with me and Barnabas assigning us to a ministry to the non-Jews while they continued to be responsible for reaching out to JEWS. ! Galatians 2:12, Earlier certain persons had come from James, Peter regularly ate with the non-Jews. ! Jude 1 & 2, I Jude a slave to Jesus Christ and brother to James, writing to those by God the Father called and kept safe by Jesus Christ. Relax, everything is going to be all right, everything's coming together; open your hearts, love is on the way. INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW TESTAMENT, KUMMEL The presupposition of James' epistle is a belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and a Pauline understanding of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. Outline of James ♦ 1:1, James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the 12 tribes in the dispersion. ♦ 1:2-18, Rejoice over trials, which are a school of testing before God, from whom, comes only good gifts. ♦ 1:19-27, Hear God's word but also be doers of it. ♦ 2:1-12, Beware Of partiality for the rich against the poor, rather, fulfill the royal law of love. ♦ 2:13, The necessity of mercy ♦ 2:14-26, Mere faith is worthless. Right action is what counts, examples, Abraham and Rahab. ♦ 3:1-12, Watch your tongue. ♦ 3:13-18, Abandon earthly wisdom seeks heavenly wisdom. ♦ 4:1-10, Do not quarrel but have peace, which comes from bowing before God. ♦ 4:11-12, Do not slander. 2

THE EPISTLE OF FIRST PETER: 5 Chapters, 105 Verses, 2482Words
The writer calls himself Peter," I Peter, am an apostle on assignment by Jesus, the Messiah..." (1:1). He is a witness of the sufferings of Jesus Christ. "I have a special concern for you church leaders. I know what it is like to be a leader, in on the Christ's sufferings as well as the coming glory." (5:1) Additionally, Peter has had an intimate familiarity with the person and teachings of Christ. This epistle was one of the first New Testament books universally regarded as canonical scripture. The traditional date for the martyrdom of Peter is 67AD; as a result this epistle is dated between 64-67AD. Writing from Babylon (Rome), it is likely Peter wrote this book in Rome shortly before his death. Though a time of persecution is upon the Christians, they are pointed to a living hope in Christ, as they are encouraged to be faithful servants. This letter is addressed to “strangers.” Strangers meaning Christians scattered in several provinces of Asia Minor. The example of Jesus’ suffering is a source of hope and encouragement to the Christians. Upon Jesus’ return, the great Shepherd will give them a “crown of glory that fadeth not away." Scriptural Readings for 2016 KUMMEL: The epistle presents itself as a writing of comfort and exhortation (James 5:12). In the face of persecutions, hate suffering, and humiliating defamation, the readers should remain steadfast in their Christianity in "the true grace of God "in view of the heavenly goal, which beckons to all who hold fast the Christian faith and in good conduct do not go astray. THE EPISTLE OF SECOND PETER: 3 Chapters, 61Verses, 1559 Words If Peter is the author, dating is around 67AD, if not dating can be as late as the second century. Early Christian Church did accept it as an epistle inspired by the Holy Spirit. Peter urges a growth in Christian virtues as the most successful method for destroying false teachings. He also warns against teachers and prophesies destined for certain destruction. Christ's second coming is/has been delayed and this is a call to be prepared when He returns. KUMMEL: Every clue to date, a precise dating of 2nd Peter eludes us ----. Second quarter of second century.... Peter cannot have written this epistle.
PRAYER: Gracious Eternal giver of all things, grant those of us who will be granted the privilege to preach and teach this year from James and Peter, the will and insight to handle YOUR WORD with honest care and faithfulness. Through YOUR HOLY SPIRIT enable us to see YOUR lessons for us now as you did for them then. Lord we need You and Your people need to hear You. Please Lord, overshadow our personhood and micromanage our limited minds for the sake of YOUR coming kingdom on earth! Of course we ask this in Jesus Christ name, AMEN!!!

Background • Blacks have the highest burden of hypertension (HTN) in the U.S. • Black men have HTN and its related complica%ons at earlier ages. • Preven%on efforts among younger Black men are needed. • Interven%ons have linked health and religion among Blacks. • Li_le is known about younger Black men’s astudes toward HTN. • It is not clear if a faith-‐based sesng can help improve their health behaviors. Purpose • Understanding Hypertension among Black Men in a Faith-‐Based Se@ng is designed to iden%fy astudes and beliefs toward HTN preven%on, treatment, and control among Black men under age 50 in two, leading NBCUSA, Inc. churches in the southeastern U.S. • Findings will guide future interven%ons, with the na%onal, longer-‐term goals of:
