Presidents’ Address For most, the journey throughout university is a time to meet new people, learn and ultimately springboard themselves into their careers. We hope that this guide serves as a useful tool in clarifying the recruitment process so that our student members can successfully navigate the upcoming application season.

Founded in 1990, the FMAA enters its 36th year in 2025 and spans across 6 campuses nationally. We are proud to serve the largest paid membership base of any finance society in Australia. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support of our events and initiatives. Board’s Address On behalf of the National Board of the FMAA, I would like to welcome you to the 35th Anniversary Edition of the FMAA Careers Handbook.

Firstly, let me congratulate you on being excited enough about your future after University to join the FMAA. Back in 1990, when we started the organisation, we did so in a very tough economy for first time job-seekers. We didn’t come from families with lots of “connections”, so we decided to make our own with potential future employers by establishing the FMAA and creating forums through which all students, regardless of background, could meet with and talk directly to the people they wanted to work for and learn from.

In addition, the FMAA provides members with an opportunity to differentiate themselves from other potential job candidates, by providing a curated calendar of extra-curricular activities and training sessions throughout the academic year. In 2025, these opportunities, facilitated by the FMAA, are more valuable than at any time since 1990.

Contrary to popular belief, many employers are more interested in “character” and “attitude” than academic achievement. A student’s character and attitudes are often best reflected in their level of participation in extra-curricular activities (on and off campus) while they are completing their degree.

In this regard, I strongly encourage you to be more than an FMAA member... become an active FMAA member and set yourself up with a competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive job-hunting market.

The Luncheon has a reputation of being one of a kind in that it facilitates high levels of interaction between careerminded students and prospective employers. Financial Services Evening The Financial Services Evening (‘FSE’) is an informationgathering and informal networking event which is strategically timed to assist students in the internship application processes and increase students’ awareness of the financial services industry.

Women in Business Event The Women in Business Event ('WIBE') is an information gathering and informal networking event that aims to encourage more women to consider a career in business by showcasing the inclusive environment and diverse career options available to them in the business sector.

FMAA introduced the WIBE to highlight the positive changes the finance industry has made to champion gender diversity.

Key Competitions Management Consulting Case Competition The Management Consulting Case Competition ('MCCC') is a national competition that offers our members a chance to tackle complex managerial problems and present their solutions. In teams of 2-4, participants are presented with a real-life business case that requires strategic thinking and a data-driven approach to create meaningful recommendations.

The competition is conducted as follows:

All registered teams are given approximately one week to research and construct their presentation. Upon conclusion, teams submit their case to the FMAA.

Members of the FMAA Executive Committee at each campus screen the submissions and decide upon the best teams that progress through to the Campus and/or State Heats, where they present to a panel of representatives from our Sponsored firms and Faculty members.

This panel judges the teams and determines the Campus Winner.

The Campus Winners proceed through to the National Final, where the victor is crowned National Champion and awarded the FMAA National Prize.

Campus winners will then compete at the state finals, which coincides with our keynote event ‘Inside Asset Management’. The winning team will then become the state champion.

Financial Services At its core, Australia’s Financial Services Industry facilitates the flow of funds between sectors, companies and people. Major players in this industry include commercial banks, investment banks, brokerage firms and insurance companies.

Investment Banking Investment Banks exist to provide high quality advice to large multinational institutions, governments and individuals to meet their clients’ financial goals. Traditionally, investment banks differ from commercial banks in that they do not engage in retail deposits or lending services. However, some investment banks do interrelate with commercial banks to form a multi-industry company. Although investment banks deliver a diverse range of financial products, some areas of focus include mergers and acquisitions, capital raising, sales and trading, investment management and investment research.

Mergers and Acquisitions Mergers and Acquisitions advisory is concerned with the provision of advice on transactions that may alter the ownership structure of a client’s organisation. Although the terms “mergers” and “acquisitions” are generally referenced together, they are different concepts. A merger occurs when two firms combine to create a single, new firm; and an acquisition involves one entity (the acquirer) purchasing another entity (the target). Providing such advice is only possible once certain processes are completed, such as valuation (generating a value for the target to ensure that the acquirer pays the optimum price for the company), due diligence (analysing the possibility of factors that may impact the acquisition and thus alter the target’s value) and third party negotiation with opposing advisors and lawyers.

Capital Raising The Capital Raising and Mergers and Acquisitions advisory divisions work closely together when acquiring a company, which requires clients to raise additional capital to fund the transaction.

Investment banks raise capital from two markets: the equity capital market (ECM) and the debt capital market (DCM). In the ECM, capital can be generated via initial public offerings, dividend reinvestments plans and rights issues. On the other hand, DCM allows capital to be raised using methods such as bond issuance, notes and commercial paper.

Investment banks may also raise capital through a method called security underwriting. This involves investment banks acting as an intermediary between the client and investors, by purchasing their client’s newly issued securities and selling it to prospective investors at a higher price. In consideration for accepting the risk that the market to investors is unsuccessful, the investment bank will retain the profits earned from the difference in sale price and the cost price of the securities purchased from their client.

Sales and Trading Sales and Trading involves purchasing and selling securities such as shares, bonds, and currencies on behalf of clients and the investment bank itself. The sales team is concerned with attracting customers and ensuring that the bank stays up to date with the constantly changing market. The trading team aims to buy and sell securities at the ideal price. Typical clients include institutional investors such as hedge funds, superannuation funds and other banks. Recent commentary, however, suggests that direct proprietary trading is losing its prominence in investment banks. The investment bank may also act as an agent, principal, broker and market maker to coordinate transactions between private investors, institutions and the firm.

Investment Management The Investment Management division aims to maximize capital gains or to create a source of stable income. These objectives are achieved by investing in a range of assets such as hedge funds, real assets, fixed income securities and equities. This division must balance their client’s risk tolerance with their investment objectives to devise a suitable asset mix. After the creation of the portfolio, the investment management division is required to periodically track movements in the investment to ensure that it remains aligned with the client’s objectives.

Investment Research The Investment Research division provides financial information to both clients and other divisions within the bank, to help them make informed decisions about their future. Financial reports may include trading history and previous trends, future industry developments, and financial disclosures. This information is used to create financial models to predict future cash flows and in turn, the estimated value of a security. Due to the ever changing nature of financial information, reports and recommendations will need to be frequently reviewed and updated. Research divisions are categorised into equity and fixed income research groups. Each group will further subdivide into different sectors and research related securities. Researchers gain a deep understanding and expertise in specific financial areas.

Business and Corporate Banking Retail banks provide clients with banking services such as loans and transactional services. Related services include personal wealth management for owners, directors and other high net worth individuals, and protecting them against future losses.

Institutional Banking Directed towards a retail bank’s largest corporate and government clients, institutional banking includes services providing access to equity capital markets and debt capital markets, as well as merger and acquisition advisory.

Markets This department is responsible for all of the activities associated with financial markets. This includes stockbroking services and hedging client exposures to certain markets such as interest rates, currency and commodities. In some banks, Institutional Banking and Markets are referred to as a single division.

The activities of these departments are often similar to those of investment banks.

Wealth, Financial Planning and Insurance Retail banks provide a range of services to customers with the main goal of growing and protecting wealth, as well as providing general insurance for items such as property and income.

Retail Banking As the most visible function of banks, it involves providing retail customers with savings and transactional accounts, mortgages, personal loans, and debit and credit cards. This department includes teams across branches, call centres and support office staff. Almost everyone will have to deal with retail banking departments for their personal financial needs.

Commercial Banking Known for its strength and resilience during the 2008-2009 financial crisis, Australia’s retail banking industry has proved to be a crucial service in fostering economic growth through its provision of financial credit. Clients range from small to large businesses, individuals and private clients.

Non-customer Facing Risk is responsible for estimating a bank’s risk in the other departments. Transactions and activities from the other departments usually need to gain approval from the risk department before they are completed. Strategy monitors and controls business processes and performance. It formulates strategies to improve these processes to achieve optimal outcomes for the bank. It can be thought of as the bank’sown internal consulting division. Accounting The accounting department is responsible for monitoring, managing and improving a retail bank’s financial accounts with the overall goal of maximising customer and shareholder satisfaction. Furthermore, they ensure the bank is complying with external audit requirements.

Anonymous Internship Review: Financial Services Why did you choose to work in financial services?

Firstly, I interacted with older members and friends who had already experienced the journey I was about to embark on. Throughout my time at university, these friends never hesitated to provide me advice on various applications, interviews, and decisions between offers. More importantly, my network of older friends provided helpful perspectives when times were not as rosy and were invaluable sources of counsel.

Secondly, the FMAA provided a platform to develop my teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. By pursuing leadership roles throughout my 4 years with the FMAA, I practiced skills and characteristics that are valuable in professional work environments.

Can you please walk us through a day in your internship?

I would arrive in the morning around 8:30-9am and log on and finish any tasks that overflowed from the night before. The work varied throughout the course of the internship but centred mainly around either deal execution work, pitching or ongoing corporate advice to clients. I would grab lunch around 12pm and eat dinner at around 6pm.

What was an obstacle that you faced?

One of the toughest obstacles about financial services internships is securing a spot to begin with. Otherwise, obstacles to success in the job are mostly due to short turnarounds where the work quality expectation remains high.

What advice would you give to students seeking an internship in financial services?

There are four key boxes you need to tick to maximise your chances of landing an internship in financial services – grades, work experience, extracurricular activities and networking. Applications are screened based on grades to begin with – this is a bar that you need to be able to clear. Following this, work experience and extracurricular activities can be used to highlight your interest in working in finance and your ability to manage your time effectively. Finally, networking (and effective preparation prior) is something that is often overlooked by internship applicants. Talking to past interns who are still at university is a great starting point as it can help you understand what you would be expected to know when talking to industry representatives. If you are talking to industry representatives, either at an FMAA event or organised by yourself, it is super important to ask questions that highlight your interest in the industry and your willingness to do your own research prior to conversations.

What was the most surprising aspect of your internship?

How quickly the time goes by. Going into the internship, I was concerned about my ability to remain focused for extended periods of time. I found that over the course of the internship I really enjoyed the work I was doing and found it to be exceptionally interesting – meaning that the days went quickly and my ability to focus for extended periods of time was not an issue.

Management Consulting Management Consultants primarily provide advice to firms to maximise growth and improve their overall performance through achieving organisational objectives. Consultants take on an advisory role to not only identify issues and risks, but to alleviate such issues through offering strategic solutions and implementation methods. As this field is dynamically growing, there are a wide array of graduate programs and some internship opportunities available for students.

The current business climate elicits the need for a fresh outlook on organisational management. A globalised economy, disruptive technologies, scarce natural resources and incumbent government regulations present unprecedented challenges to to every firm’s success. While firms may have little difficulty identifying such challenges, devising feasible solutions to alleviate them is much more complex.

Industry Details The services they provide are not confined to a single industry, client or category. They are not recruited based on a specific degree or qualification held. Anonymous Internship Review: Management Consulting Did you enjoy your internship experience?

There was a lot! Firstly, gaining first-hand experience in the type of work I would be doing if I were to take a graduate position in the industry was second to none. This is really important to me as I find it so hard to tell if I would enjoy a career from someone else’s experience alone, so getting to sink my teeth in and try it out was great.

Not just that but being given valuable work that the team is relying on you to get done, meaning you get to have an impact, is pretty cool. Secondly, the opportunity to expand my network was another great component of my internship as I was able to learn from other career journeys to inform my own choices, as well as meet some really nice people along the way, with so many generously giving up their time to get to know you better.

What did you work on throughout your internship?

Try everything! You are never going to know what you like, and ever better, what you are going to be good at unless you give it a go. And put your best foot forward, being eager to learn and understand the industry better. Asset management is one where FMAA networking events and talking to older students who have had both experience and advice is not just recommended but can change the course of your career for the better.

How did you prepare for the case interview?

To start, I highly recommend reading the book ‘Case in Point’ by Marc Cosentino, which teaches you the frameworks for structuring a case interview answer. You usually get a very big question which you should separate into smaller digestible parts. The idea of the case is to get you to quickly thing on your feet so the only way to prepare is by practicing doing cases online and (importantly) with friends or experienced case interviewees. The interviewer wants to test how you think so try to think out loud when practicing.

How did you hear about the internship opportunity, and can you share any advice?

I heard about the opportunity from FMAA Consulting Networking sessions and online. I would recommend preparing for the case interview and the behavioural questions. The technical skills can be picked up on the job, so the interviewers are more interested in soft skills. This applies to graduate positions as well.

Did your internship opportunity give you a clearer idea of what you wanted to pursue after university?

The internship deepened my interest in consulting, and I know I want to enter into this industry after university.

The experience also taught me how to approach problems and solve them very structurally, and I developed confidence in the professional and corporate environment. Consulting is also very broad, so I recommend this pathway to people who are still unsure about different industries as you can gain deeper insights and transfer into these fields later.

Asset Management, Private Equity and Portfolio Companies The asset management industry, including private equity and portfolio companies, is responsible for managing funds for individuals and companies, where these funds invest in various asset classes. The primary role of these institutions centres around making well-informed investment decisions on behalf of their clients to grow their finances, diversify their portfolios, and mitigate investment risk. With the volume of investable assets continuing to rise and changing demographics shifting asset management to centre-stage, opportunities in this field are more present than ever. From financial analysts and even economists, a range of occupations are involved in undertaking the investment research, market analysis, and management decisions that go into this service.

Mutual Funds Mutual funds are managed portfolios of assets which are managed by a professional investment manager, and make up the bulk of the industry. Investors come from all aspects of life including from superannuation, retail investors, and institutions. Most of the time, mutual funds are long-only and employ more conventional investment strategies. These types of funds cover a variety of asset classes, from property trusts to international shares, and have the benefit of being diversifiable and entailing low transaction costs.

Hedge Funds Hedge funds are fund that employ unconventional investment strategies to seek higher returns. Strategies include shorting stocks, risk arbitrage, and activist investing. As a result, hedge funds tend to be more risky, and investors tend to be institutional investors and high net worth individuals who are able to meet the cash threshold needed to invest in a hedge fund.

Private Equity Funds Private equity funds focus on managing private companies. Broadly speaking, private equity funds can be separated into leveraged buyout funds (LBO) and venture capital funds (VC). An LBO fund generally borrows large amounts of money to fund purchases of companies to take private. It looks to generate returns by improving performance and selling the company later at a higher price. VC funds invest in early stage companies looking for the next big idea.

Portfolio Companies Portfolio companies are businesses held by investment firms, with the aim of maximising long-term value. These companies typically span a variety of industries, such as retail, manufacturing, and resources, and benefit from strategic oversight and operational improvements. Investment firms seek to drive value creation by optimising performance through effective management practices, expansion strategies, and operational efficiencies.

Anonymous Internship Review: Asset Management, Private Equity and Portfolio Companies What were your favourite parts of the internship?

There was a lot! Firstly, gaining first-hand experience in the type of work I would be doing if I were to take a graduate position in the industry was second to none. This is really important to me as I find it so hard to tell if I would enjoy a career from someone else’s experience alone, so getting to sink my teeth in and try it out was great.

Not just that but being given valuable work that the team is relying on you to get done, meaning you get to have an impact, is pretty cool. Secondly, the opportunity to expand my network was another great component of my internship as I was able to learn from other career journeys to inform my own choices, as well as meet some really nice people along the way, with so many generously giving up their time to get to know you better.

Best piece of advice you received?

Try everything! You are never going to know what you like, and ever better, what you are going to be good at unless you give it a go. And put your best foot forward, being eager to learn and understand the industry better. Asset management is one where FMAA networking events and talking to older students who have had both experience and advice is not just recommended but can change the course of your career for the better.

Did your internship experience give you a clearer idea of the career path you wish to take?

Kinda! It helped me learn about just how broad the asset management industry is, which can be both great and scary, but really importantly, it confirmed my continuing interest within the financial space. There is so much variety within different teams under the umbrella of asset management so talking to people about their experiences has never been more important. It has also opened my eyes to both the buy-side and sell-side opportunities, and that a career in either would be challenging yet exciting.

Do you have any advice for recruitment?

You need to show and prove that you have a passion for the asset management sector. This can be through thoroughly researching the firm, keeping up to date with industry knowledge or seeking out information from someone within the industry. In an interview I would recommend showing off all that you know as this will convey diligence, motivation and passion. I would also recommend starting your own investment portfolio as this shows you have a real interest in investment management (great way to prove it!) - it is also a great interview topic!

About us We are a leading global listed infrastructure specialist, with one of the largest and most experienced teams in the sector, split between Sydney and London, responsible for A$7.5 billion of AUM as at 31 Dec 2024. What we offer We recently launched our Graduate Programme last year. Applications for the Graduate Programme have closed for 2025 but will re-open soon for 2026. We offer both Winter and Summer Internships depending on the availability and needs of the business.

Who we look for A career in funds management is an intellectually stimulating and engaging career choice. You will be confident and curious by nature, have a passion for financial markets, and your positive approach will enable you to build relationships with colleagues, company management, and clients alike. We recruit graduates and interns into both investment and non-investment departments based on business needs and look at people with different backgrounds.

Application process All of our recruitment processes follow a competitive recruitment process. We typically run a 3 round interview process for all our roles. This will include an interview with members of the team receiving an intern or graduate and an interview with senior leaders.

Recruitment Details Internship program Winter internships typically run for 4-6 weeks depending on the student’s availability. Summer internships typically run for 8-12 weeks commencing in December. In some cases, a student might be offered an extension to work part-time during their studies. Our internship opportunities vary depending on department of placement. For investment team opportunities as an example, students may be asked to conduct fundamental analysis of companies including building financial models to support their investment recommendations.

Graduate pathways YCM’s Graduate Programme consists of an 18-month rotation programme within our investment departments, spending 6-months in Equities, Fixed Income and ESG. At the end of the program, the graduate will be placed in an analyst role within the investment team, depending on the business needs. Students who have interned with us are top of mind for graduate positions and are encouraged to apply to graduate opportunities as they arise.

What have you achieved since graduation?

Since graduating, I started in investment banking, got the chance to travel around Europe and Asia, then moved into a role in private equity that’s more in line with my interests.

Why would you encourage students to join the FMAA? I highly encourage students to join the FMAA (completely unbiased, I promise!) for the opportunity to build lasting friendships, gain access to an invaluable professional network and benefit from early exposure to industry events.

Can you name a highlight from your time in the FMAA? Attending National Conferences in Melbourne and Canberra and connecting with peers from FMAA chapters in VIC, QLD, and ACT was a definite highlight — there's nothing like bonding over Mooseheads or a Lune croissant!

What advice would you give to university students looking to enter your current industry?

Be curious and take every opportunity to learn from those around you. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, it’s often where the most rewarding experiences begin.

There are so many opportunities to ask questions and to equip yourself with a solid understanding of the financial services, asset management, management consulting and professional services pillars to forge your own career path.

Can you name a highlight from your time in the FMAA? As I reflect on my university life, I look back fondly at the memories I have made through the society.

Whether it's picking the brains of industry professionals at Corporate Cocktails or sharing a meal with my closest mates after recruitment, joining the FMAA has been the highlight of the last 3 years.

What advice would you give to university students looking to enter your current industry?

Worry less about how something appears on your CV and more about the skills and lessons that you've learnt. Consulting firms are looking for bright and malleable minds that are curious about the world around them. Have fun throughout university and the results will follow!

Why would you encourage students to join the FMAA? The FMAA helps bridge the gap between university and work, through alumni and professionals. While studying is necessary to build your technical skills, it is the exposure to those who are currently in the industry that will help shape your view on where you would like to start your career.

Can you name a highlight from your time in the FMAA? The various trips created many highlights throughout my journey with the FMAA. From meeting our interstate members to beach campfires, there wasn’t a dull moment and I definitely created a strong bond with my cohort over the course with them.

What advice would you give to university students looking to enter your current industry?

Be bold and persistent. There are so many opportunities out there, all of which will enhance different parts of yourself and help develop a well rounded skillset. Trying out different areas will also help build your understanding of which areas you may prefer to work in down the line.
