One of Argentina’s most unique and rewarding anadromous angling adventures. W hile there are a great many appealing and productive steelhead rivers in the world, Argentina’s mighty Rio Santa may be the most unique. The reasons are many: its massive size, the harsh and surreal Dali-esque landscape through which it flows, the subtlety of its structure, and the fact that it’s the only prolific Atlantic steelhead system in the world. We have no real idea as to how many fish it holds but we do know that after more than a decade of diligent fishing by some of Argentina’s top guides, many of its secrets have been revealed. This is a consistent and viable gem that might possibly be the last major river to be added to the canon of classic steelhead rivers. Like most, the steelhead here average 9 to 10 pounds but fish in the 20-pound class are not uncommon. While anglers have 30 proven pools and runs to fish, Los Plateados Lodge was built to host only four anglers per week, ensuring all guests the best shot at quality water each and every day. This small, very rustic but soulful riverside lodge offers both boat and vehicle access to prime runs, world-class guides, and delicious meals paired with fine Argentine wines. Be among the traveled few to have experienced the thrill and challenge of Argentina’s impressive Atlantic steelhead. Prime time is from late March through early May. Rate: $4,990 per person for a 6 night/6 day package
