As we have grown over the years, it is clear that we enjoy many advantages due to our size and scale. These advantages are too numerous to mention them all here, but some

of them are: the transferring of crews from branch to branch, if we happen to be going through a slow period in a particular area; to purchasing power; to being able to have adequate risk management resources to ensure the safety of our workers and those around us; to securing national customers who are looking

for a ‘single source’ provider of construction services. These are all ‘real’ advantages that we have that translate into ‘real’ benefits for us all, that we may even take for granted from time to time. There are, however, also some challenges that we face due to scale. One of these is ‘communication’. I often tell people that although we have grown to be a fairly large organization, we still think of our company as a group of smaller teams with a small company feel. This is what we are striving to maintain.

NHL Awards Gala a Smashing Success

Canadian Diabetes Association the big winner! In the last Flash, we explained that Flynn Canada Ltd. had donated $100,000 to the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) and that Flynn was the ‘presenting sponsor’ for the 2007 NHL Awards Gala. Well we did it… and the gala was a rousing success! Doug Flynn and wife Ally Flynn are pictured below walking the red carpet as they enter the Pantages Theatre for the evening’s festivities.
Flynn Going ‘Green’ Flynn Canada is currently setting up ‘Green Committees’ to bring forward various environmental initiatives that will help our company do its part in reducing green house gas emissions. Flynn is enlisting representatives from the field, shops, warehouses, and offices for the task. Some ideas already up for consideration are: • Establish ‘GO GREEN’ committees • Develop a logo • Order hybrid vehicles • Implement ideas and track them • Join a green organization • Look to companies to do audits • Report what we do in the Flash • Tie-ins with green roofing • Facilitate and promote car pools • Encourage recycling ideas • Building energy audits • Recycle materials we tear off of roofs • Plant more trees • Turn off lights and computers • Scan and email instead of faxes • Use fluorescent bulbs We know that there are lots more ideas out there, so if you have any ideas or suggestions, please forward them to Manny DeSousa in Corporate or call him in Toronto. John McManus has volunteered his time to the Toronto committee, where meetings have already taken place and a few initiatives have already been implemented; car pooling has begun in Toronto and Flynn has now ordered a total of five hybrid vehicles. As the company develops more of these ‘Green’ initiatives, we’ll bring you up to date in the Flash! Merging two of Flynn’s passions, hockey and excellence, we were the perfect match to be ‘presenting sponsor’ for the event, which celebrates excellence on the ice and raises funds to fight diabetes. Flynn’s goal participating at the NHL Awards was to try to improve the lives of the millions afflicted with diabetes. The management team at Flynn is driven by the possible — and so wanted to help the Canadian Diabetes Association fight a disease that afflicts nearly three million Canadians. The Flynn family is only one of the many families affected by the diabetes, with founder Don Flynn suffering for many years now with the disease. Many employees and their family members alike are affected. Representatives of the York Simcoe Express Hockey Club (below) from the Georgina Minor Hockey Association attended the gala as guests of Doug Flynn as well. The team had an outstanding 27-1-4 record during their regular season, won the OMHA Championships, and then went on to win the All-Ontario PeeWee Tournament in Ottawa, where they went 2–0 to win the OHF Championship. Judging by the expressions on their faces, they were slightly in awe to be there.

Fighting Diabetes a ‘Walk in the Park’ On June 10th, our Toronto and Victoria branches separately participated in walks supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Victoria branch employees Kim Gaskill, Marie Frenette, Chris Sitter and Clifton Adams joined a few friends for Victoria’s annual Walk for Diabetes. In Toronto, (pictured at top of page) a number of employees participated in the event, including: Barb Ciccone, Monica Capobianco, Kim Foster, Alfredo De Guzman, Alicia Capobianco, Ben Aguilar, Connie Bozzelli, Marg Malone, Inga Sargent, Monica Capobianco, Sally Labib, and Teo Fajardo.
T.A.S.K. Submissions (Teamwork Attitude Sharing Knowledge)
Ridge Tool Company’s ’SeeSnake micro’ Stores Supervisor Don Brown initially purchased the ‘SeeSnake micro’ by Ridge Tool Company for the Vancouver branch. The idea was quickly adopted by Gavin Burgess, Vancouver Service Manager. The SeeSnake is based on fiber optic technology and allows the user to see into areas otherwise inaccessible or difficult to access. Some examples: inside air handling units, down drains, into drywalled ceiling spaces (with only a tiny opening), inside metal deck flutes… the possibilities are endless.
Jorge Pereira submitted this idea for a ‘walk behind’ blower that provides high speed/ volume air at 350˚F for drying roof deck. The blower allows concrete, metal, and most wood decks to be dried without directly applying a torch. The machine has been tested in Vancouver, Toronto and Moncton and was found to be more effective at removing moisture than a standard blower. It may not be quite as effective as a torch but it’s considerably safer—and that comes first!
Hydrostatic Rock Spreader & Workhorse Front End An idea sent in from Domingos Simoes is a for a redesign of the currently used Flynn Hydraulic Rock Spreader. The re-design changes over from a hydraulic system to hydrostatic one that ultimately reduces days of labor and saves thousands of dollars in machine construction cost.
And check this out: the total funds raised by our two offices was almost $5,000! AND since Flynn Canada Ltd. matches any amount raised, that brought the total to almost $10,000! Fantastic! The HR department will also be arranging for CDA representatives from each province to visit all Flynn branches to do a ‘lunch and learn’ so that our employees are better informed about this dreadful disease. Flynn’s Diabetes Committee members will also be kicking off some additional initiatives in the near future. Some activities have already raised money as well as awareness: an online auction of soccer and concert tickets graciously donated by our own employees!
Flame Engineering Hot Blower
The ‘business’ end is fitted with an adjustable bright light allowing the user to see in total darkness. The unit runs on four AA cells and is available from several sources on the internet or contact Don Brown for further information.
A front swivel has also been added to allow the front and rear sections to rotate independently. And the front section has been redesigned to accept standard workhorse attachments; including dump buckets, standard gravel spreaders, hot dispensers and even hot tanks. The old Flynn aluminum bucket has also been redesigned. Great ideas… keep ‘em coming!

Victoria News Shingling crew goes beyond the call of duty As we all know, part of Flynn’s safety policy is that a fire extinguisher be present on all jobs, whether there is hot work going on or not. This requirement proved to be more than useful for our Victoria Shingling crew. While working on a shingling job for M’akola Housing, the crew of (left, L–R): Matthew Reese, Ray Ball, and Jordan Cooke, (Martin Davies, not available) noticed a fire in a neighbouring hotel. Our crew immediately responded and were the first people on the scene attempting to extinguish the fire. More importantly, they were able to warn others in the hotel of the danger. The Times Colonist printed the story in which our employees were quoted. Congratulations for your courage and sense of duty!
Wayne Mack: General Manager/Partner, Metals Division Wayne has been with Flynn since he was hired as an Estimator in Calgary back in September 1994. Wayne became Halifax Branch Manager in March 2000 and moved to Vancouver in January 2005. Wayne now becomes General Manager/Partner, Metals Division. Metal Department praised Victoria Metals Department Superintendent Rich Stanton would like to thank and congratulate his entire staff. Under the leadership of Foremen Mark O’Hanley, Jason O’Hanley, and Shawn Mason, the metals crews have been doing exceptional work. Rich notes that not only have their jobs been completed on time and with high quality workmanship, but that the Foremen have received SEVEN 100% site safety inspections in a row! Top production rates along with top safety reviews—awesome. What a great example to set!
A big thank you to our crews who LITERALLY go that extra mile And last, but not least, it was a busy summer for the Victoria Production Roofing crews. Well, summers are always busy, but this one was a little different. Aside from the usual school projects that take place in Victoria during the summer months, the majority of summer jobs take place out of town. This year was no different, with projects in Courtenay, Gibson’s Landing, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, and on Salt Spring Island.
Flynn management not only recognizes the dedication of our crews by doing these projects, and for the sacrifices they make, but also those made by their families. We realize how difficult it can be to be away for extended periods, especially during this time of the year. So a huge THANKS to you all, and all who do the same—no matter what branch you are from!

Simon Fraser University Arts School Gets Extension A great mix of materials and design elements have gone into the new Arts School addition at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. Bird Construction offered Flynn the contract to supply and install more than 1500 square feet of Prodema architectural wood panels around the theatre area of the project. Flynn Canada technicians Kelly Brown, John Butters, and Rob Hetherington performed the installation work while Project Manager Troy Johnston and Project Coordinator Ana Gutierrez looked after the administration of the contract. Good teamwork!
Underhill Project No Cakewalk for Roofing Crews
First Class Work on Modern Residence
20 Vic Management Inc. recently contracted Flynn to replace the roof at the Lougheed Mall. These types of projects require extreme care and diligence— people walking on the street below becomes a major safety concern.
Flynn Canada is capable of doing it all when it comes to building envelope construction. And in fact, from the engineering of new control joints to the removal of rooftop units, this Flynn crew has done it all. Bosa Building Management contracted Flynn to replace the existing roof system on this old Sears building, currently being used (and rented out) by Universal Studios. The building has been used to shoot such films as Riddick 2, Night at the Museum, and Santa Clause 1, 2, and 3. The twenty-five-year-old existing rubber system was in disrepair, with old soaking wet insulation. This could have qualified it for the TV show World’s Dirtiest Jobs! It made for a very messy tear-off. The replaced roof was a conventional 4ply tar and gravel system. Led by veteran Foreman Don Gaff, the determined Flynn crew put in a huge effort to make sure that the project progressed smoothly.
White Rock, B.C. is known for its vistas and gorgeous sunsets overlooking the ocean. Houses line these scenic hillsides and residential owners are renovating or replacing like crazy. Nathan Construction hooked up with Ken Smith, B.C. Business Development Manager, for a new residential contract with very unique and stunning architectural design. The drawings and architectural model called for curved deck areas, Prodema architectural wood panels, pre-painted steel fasçias, and aluminum plate in a ‘copper penny’ paint finish. Ken knew that the project would require highlyskilled workers to achieve the workmanship expected. Project Manager Troy Johnston, Foreman Azmir Hadzovic, and the rest of the team including Uwe Krieger and Justin Jang were responsible for a first class finished product.

Lougheed Mall Project is a Wrap
Ken was very ‘hands on’ during the installation stage to ensure that the customer’s expectations were not just met—but surpassed! Another fine project by our Vancouver Metals Department.
Led by Foreman Chris Gaff, our Flynn crew stripped the existing roof and laid a new 2-ply system on top of the existing insulation (mop base torch cap) without incident. Pictured above is the roofing crew responsible for the work, which includes (L–R): Dion Lochead, Foreman Chris Gaff, Touran McClean, Tony Schorlemer, Kevin Scott, Nathan Clarke, Justyn Barber, Romano Bol, Markus Vermeylen, and Toni Madi. Although not the hardest system to encounter, the roof covers a number of stores—which contain many thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. So allowing a leak into the building would be a risk management nightmare! Once again, Flynn used extreme caution with our tie-in and application of the new system. The crews also took extra precaution and poly-wrapped most of the merchandise in the stores while we worked above. Now that’s going the extra mile!

Abbotsford Branch British Columbia Commerce Court: Staff News ‘Risky Business’
Ultimate Facility for the Ultimate Driving Machine Seaward Construction chose Flynn Canada Ltd. to supply, fabricate, and install more than 33,800 square feet of Flynn Accumet 2000 architectural metal panels on this prestigious BMW dealership located in Richmond, B.C. The distinctively shaped showroom and parkade tower some thirtyseven feet high complete with circularshaped columns. Flynn’s scope included interior walls, a large amount of vented composite aluminum soffit panels (right), as well as the perimeter walls of the showroom, center building, and parkade. Project Manager Troy Johnston and Foreman Rick Conniff worked closely with Hywel Jones Architects on the overall design and detailing while the project was in progress, while Ana Gutierrez was the Project Coordinator. The dedicated team comprised of Thomas Kelleher, Bryce Young, Barry Hoyano, Larry Frazao completed the installation. Other crew members who were part of this project included: Ryan Young, Leo Labosierre, Azmir Hadzovic, Uwe Krieger, Justin Jang, Shawn Thompson, Aaron Andrews, Norman Murray, Mick Wesley, Mark Wesley, Patrick L, Sam Yi Bao, Derek Bargen, Jae Kyun Hae, Guy Fleming, Jeff Mencher, Rob Hetherington, Rutilio Cruz, and Kevin Whittal. A good relationship between all parties was maintained throughout the project and went a long way towards its successful completion.
The Bentall Building Management group brought in Flynn Canada for this very difficult project. The building is used for scientific data research and contains very expensive equipment. Risk management was the name of the game. Our Flynn team knew that this meant that they would be required to operate at optimum performance levels—both in terms of safety and quality workmanship.
Abbotsford branch Gord Edmondson joined the Abbotsford branch in early April as Production Coordinator. He began his career with Flynn in 2004, carrying out various Coordinator roles in the Metal Department, and as a Re-Roof Estimator in the Vancouver branch. We’re delighted to announce the arrival of a healthy baby girl, on May 24th to Derek Smith, Metals Field Installer, and Aubree Lemmens. Foremen Chris Gaff and his wife are expecting their first child. Are we supposed to know it’s a girl? Congratulations and best wishes to all!
Vancouver branch The original building used old tongue and groove decking. Flynn Canada performed the complete removal of the existing roof and reapplied a new 2-ply system with a mopped base and torched cap. The quantity of penetrations made for a challenging re-roof project from beginning to end, with so many details that had to be designed on the fly for a perfect job! The team was made up of Ed Gallant (above-left) along with Jim McKay (aboveright) and the crew of (below, top to bottom): Foreman Cameron Brown, Jimmy McKay, Mike Barker, Markus Vermeylen, Romano Bol, Toni Madi, Terry Peters, Paul Wiebe, Dave Jenkins, TJ Vandale, Corey Gehlen, and Stuart Rodgers.

Congratulations go out to Ken Smith and Thelma Smith on the arrival of their latest grandchild, a baby girl named Kasey Lynne, born on the 4th of July. Also to Rutilio Cruz and his wife Elizabeth, who has their second baby on August 20th, a healthy daughter named Valery.
Victoria branch The Flynn Victoria shop has hired four workers to assist in the shop on a part-time basis in conjunction with Victoria School District No. 63’s Pre-Apprenticeship Program. The program teaches students about opportunities available to them in the trades. To ensure the safety of these young workers, special care was taken during the delivery of their safety orientation, and they are closely supervised under the watchful eye of ‘Uncle’ Ted Blosmanis.
This Flynn squad did a great job on this project, making sure that the Flynn name continues to mean quality and value! Another successfully applied roof system. Way to go men!

Alberta Region Calgary Zinc Application Seminar VM Zinc recently hosted a full three-day training course in Calgary on the usage of zinc in architectural applications. In attendance for the installation procedures portion were four of our sheet metal technicians from Calgary: Keith Foster, Richard White, Ted Ponting and Ray Blahey, while Ardie Van Buuren and Roddy Okimow came in from Edmonton. Another portion of the seminar was devoted to demonstrating the proper techniques of fabricating panels with zinc, whether they be architectural panels or custom shaped roof panels. Calgary Shop Foreman Norm Toulouse also attended and is now our ‘resident expert’. Instructor Erik Berg from North Carolina, helped construct a mock up with ‘diamond shaped’ tiles that are exactly the same size, shape, etc. as the upcoming fish hatchery project in Calgary. Great timing! We’ll feature that project in an upcoming Flash.
Calgary Branch Praised for Quality Work Recently the Calgary branch completed a custom panel application that featured Prodema wood panels for the Banff Centre project—Sally Borden Building. Cameron MacDonald, Calgary Project Manager, received the following letter from our supplier Sound Solutions in Toronto, and we quote: Cam, I was at the job site yesterday and am writing to congratulate you and your installation team on a fantastic installation of the Prodema BAQ+ product on this building. The quality and care put into the cutting, panel placement and screw alignment is remarkable. Some of the more complicated cuts look as though a millwork contractor did them. Indeed the success of this project does prove that a good cladding contractor can think like a mill worker, which of course is essential with this product. Please pass on my remarks to all involved, with special thanks to Tom Hill, the site supervisor, who seemed to understand the product, its installation, and the care required to work with wood. Calgary’s Construction Boom Showing Few Signs of Letting Up Atop Princess Auto in Calgary, Levon Harder, Jarius Big Crow, Barry Poulson, and Foreman Ralph Weaselfat take five after completing more than 35,500 square feet of loose laid Carlisle EPDM roofing system. This project is just one example of the rapid growth of the oil capital of Canada. People are taking heed of the old saying, “Go west, young man”, as Calgary is experiencing a major influx of new residents—reported to be approximately eighty people per day. Major municipal infrastructure development such as fire halls, schools, police stations, retail malls, hospitals etc., continue to be built as our crews fly from one new structure to another. This trend is likely to continue well into the foreseeable future.

Wright Construction contracted Flynn Canada Ltd. to supply and install 3”-thick foam panels from Kingspan Insulated Panels (formerly Coldmatic) on one of three Wal-Mart projects currently under contract for Flynn Edmonton. Alberta Expansion Keeps Edmonton Crews on the Move Talk About Going the Extra Mile! The Calgary Metal Division certainly did that when their Metals Crew made up of Foreman Richard White, Dany Tangen, Ray Blahey, Tyler Grabowski, Tyler Walls, and Mat Franzen recently installed 130 foam panels—or roughly 400 lineal feet—at the Wal-Mart addition in Airdrie (north of Calgary) in ONE day.
Another example of an expanding Alberta populace is the addition to the RCMP detachment in Sherwood Park, outside of Edmonton. Shown on-site are (below, L–R): Metals Superintendent Mike N. Johnson, Katherine Washburn, Foreman Dave Tipper, and Metals Manager Bill Rennich.
The 4mm blue Flynn Accumet 2000 composite panels were contracted to Flynn by Whitson Contracting, complete with Zbars, membrane, and insulation. The system was designed, fabricated, and installed our Flynn forces from Edmonton.
The photo above was taken at 8:30pm and the crew was still going strong. Ryley Koch, Metal Division Coordinator, even showed up on-site to help the crew out for the last couple of hours. Flynn Canada was also under contract to supply and install the metal deck, roofing, metal roofing, and metal siding on the project. Way to go guys! P.S. As of press time, Halifax branch’s Steve Pass (arguably the ‘production king’ of foam panel) wasn’t available for comment.
Can You Spot Something Missing from This Picture? No not Waldo— ScotiaBank project number five for the Edmonton branch is missing the traditional Boa Red-coloured tower panels (here the tower was constructed with split-faced block).
Over the past year, the branch has supplied and installed these panels on four previous contracts. And even though the tower was missing, Flynn did supply and install our Accumet 2000 system with a clear anodized finish to the upper feature band, entrance canopy, and drive-thru soffit areas for contractor Dawson Wallace.
Bet-Tor Care Utilizes Westin Composite Flynn Accumet 2000 Panels Complete Bearden Engineering & Architectural Consulting was the architect on this Bet-Tor Care facility project in Edmonton. They came to us for the supply, fabrication, and installation of the full wall system; complete with insulation, Z-bars and membrane. The product of choice on the exterior of this beautiful 3-storey office/commercial complex was 4mm Medium Bronze Metallic Flynn Accumet 2000 panels, complimented by a blue accent band around the structure’s top. The system was complex from all aspects; from estimating to coordination to production and management. And when faced with labour shortages, our crews simply picked it up a notch and put in the extra effort required to complete the project on time for tenant occupancy. A great looking job, guys!
In a previous Flash, we told you that Steve Teal in Calgary had negotiated contracts for the Westin Hotel retrofits in both Calgary and Edmonton. Can the Edmonton branch handle complicated custom architectural panels? You bet! “The panel layout on that project was complicated with several different angles, combined with curved panels and restricted access areas,” explains Metals Manager Bill Rennich. But perseverance paid off with a great looking project for contractor Starwood Capital Group. Steve Teal, above far-right, of the Calgary Branch organized almost a dozen and a half ‘bikers’ to head out on a three-day ride through some of the most beautiful country in the world. Day one saw the group head west to Lake Louise, and continuing into beautiful British Columbia for an overnight stop in Revelstoke. They were to meet up with their Vancouver ‘chapter’ there for the ride south on day two. Traveling south out of Revelstoke, the band had to ferry over to Galena Bay, then continued through New Denver to Nelson. Then they ‘rumbled’ through Salmo to Creston and on to Cranbrook for the night. On day three, they headed to Kimberly over to Fernie, B.C. through Coleman and back to Black Diamond, Alberta, where the group split up and headed home after some 1,500 kilometers of openroad riding. Oh, what a feelin’! (Hey Steve! Maybe next year for the CDA?)
In the Fall 2006 Issue of the Flash, we explained that Art Bundschuh had been promoted to Regional Vice President of the new Midwest Region. We also mentioned that Art and his family would be moving back to Edmonton in either March or July 2007 and that Art would work from the Edmonton branch. Well, Art along with his wife Deb and their three girls, finally made the long drive west at the end of July. Good luck Art on your new adventure—we’re all behind you 100%!
Take it off, baby! During Christmas ‘06, George Ryland, a Metal Flashing Installer in Flynn’s Edmonton branch was ‘Santasized’. Weighing in at a hefty 254 pounds, his health wasn’t great and he had little energy or motivation. Well, George shortly thereafter committed to a year-long bet with his grandmother to lose weight. Then in mid-February George was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes after collapsing at home (there it is again!) and was immediately put on medication and told to change his lifestyle. So George entered the branch ‘Weight Loss Competition’ and is currently one of the top ‘losers’. By the first of June, George weighed in at 183 lbs! He’s lost an incredible 71 pounds in just over five months! Above, he holds the work clothes he used to wear. Today, George has more energy and exhibits a positive attitude towards his work and life in general. He has demonstrated a great deal of character. Congratulations and best of luck!

Midwest Region Scorching Hot Prairie Summer Makes for Tough Re-Roof Work Casino Regina Flynn Regina was recently chosen to reroof this historic building. Built in 1912, it was the original CP Rail Station and is designated as a heritage building. The 15,000 square foot project required a lot of care and attention, as crews were required to remove two existing roof systems right down to the roof deck. As the summer of 2007 saw record temperatures across the prairies, work was, needless to say, tough—yet our guys are tougher! They replaced an area of almost 10,000 square feet with a new vapour barrier, insulation, and new EPDM ballasted roofing. The other area of just over 5,000 square feet was replaced with a vapour barrier, mechanically attached insulation and OSB sheathing, and a fully adhered EPDM roofing system.

Not Quite 100 Years Old, Regina Gets New Provincial Correctional Centre General contractor PCL Constructors chose Flynn as building envelope suppliers and installers for Regina’s Provincial Correctional Facility project. Consisting of two large 3-storey cellblocks and a new administration building, this new facility will replace Regina’s tired, existing 1913 facility (seen above in the background). A new 60,000 square foot Modified SBS roof system was supplied and installed by (above, L–R): Foreman Rob Johnston, Ian Beattie, Dave Denis, Cheryl Bonavia and Ken Sauer. Metals crews led by Foreman Spencer Sayer installed more than 83,000 square feet of roof and floor deck, and are seen below installing a section of the 55,000 square feet of corrugated metal wall cladding completed on the new facility.
In addition, another 5,100 square feet of metal roof, and 700 square feet of Flynn Accumet 2000 architectural composite panels were designed, fabricated and installed by Flynn.

Everyone’s a Winner Architectural Metal Roof Highlights at Saskatoon Selkirk, MB Mental Casino Project Health Centre With construction complete, the truly beautiful Dakota Dunes Casino in Saskatoon, threw open its doors at the grand opening in late August, and Flynn played a big part in its construction.
With more than 91,000 square feet of steel floor deck and slightly more in steel roof deck, Flynn Canada crews were kept moving on the this complex metal roofing project.
General contractor Graham Construction called upon Flynn to supply and install more than 73,000 square feet of inverted Tremco roofing, as well as the vapour barrier, insulation, Z-bars and Flynn Accumet architectural composite panels and insulated articulation band.
A Big Sign for a Big Hummer of a Vehicle
Big vehicle, big sign. More than 700 square feet of Accumet 2000 was required to complete the big ‘H’ at this Hummer dealership in Regina for general contractor Dominion Construction.
Regina’s Service Manager Larry Humble and Verdi Sanders exchanged wedding vows on July 21st, 2007. The Aruba-style wedding was held at their home away from home in Sherwood Forest. A quote from Larry to Doug Flynn: “If Doug were to ever open an office in Aruba, I would go and be the Service Manager.” Larry and Verdi holiday annually to Aruba and it’s a place that’s very near and dear to their hearts.
In addition, and with tricky angles and mitres galore, expert metal crews from the Winnipeg branch also installed approximately 50,500 square feet of Flynn AccuSteel insulated metal roofing system.
Flynn was also under contract to supply and install 91,300 square feet of roof deck, almost 9,000 square feet of insulated soffit and fasçia bands, and approximately 4,000 square feet of insulated Accusteel curved roofing complete with double grid of Z-bars.

The First Annual Saskatoon Branch Golf Tournament was held in June. The Texas scramble tournament ended in a tie and required the first ever ‘chip-off’ to decide the winner!

Leo Cosyns, Winnipeg Fabrication Shop, who on June 21st celebrated the arrival of his grandson, Lucas William Leo Joseph. Christopher Forde, who became engaged to his girlfriend Lisa Kresnyak with a winter wedding planned. Tim Si, Winnipeg Drafting, who married Phoung Bui on July 21st. And Dana Desmarais and his wife Katherine, who became proud parents on July 14th, with the arrival of a baby boy.

Ontario Region Flynn has ‘Arrived’ in Contract Glazing and Curtainwall Markets Toronto’s Maple Leaf Square When PCL Constructors Canada Inc. in Toronto were reviewing their options for the complete ‘glass and glazing package’ at the new Maple Leaf Square project in downtown Toronto, only one name needed to be considered… Flynn Canada Ltd. The newly formed Contract Glazing and Curtainwall Division unleashed the team of John Silva, Russ Jackson, Al Perrault, as well as many support staff members in an attempt to negotiate this prestigious twin tower contract. And they succeeded! A team of architectural firms; Kawabara Payne McKenna, Blumberg Architects (KPMG Architects), and Page + Steele Architects are the primary designers for the complex that is being built next to, and with direct access to, Toronto’s Air Canada Centre—Home of the Leafs and Raptors—by an ownership consortium of Lanterra Developments, Cadillac Fairview, and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.
The massive development will consist of a major retail and daycare centre, a boutique hotel, an office complex, as well as an assortment of premium residential condominiums with unparalleled views of either the Lake Ontario waterfront or the Toronto city skyline. The multi-million dollar project will utilize approximately 200,000 square feet of modified Kawneer’s 2500PG and 1600 System 2, stick and clip curtain wall systems. These systems are designed for both 2 and 4-sided structural silicone glazing (SSG) and a .125” aluminum stud welded panel system. These units will be placed on the ground floor areas, office and hotel areas, the link bridge, and the north and south tower penthouses as well as the interior galleria. In addition, almost 3,600 square feet of Solarex 2500 skylight systems, for 4-sided SSG glazing will be installed along with almost 3,700 square feet of custom angle framing systems. There will be a lot of architectural panel work as well, with more than 16,000 square feet of interior 1/8” aluminum panel cladding complete with subgirt system, insulation, and vapour barrier. There are 2,000 sq ft of miscellaneous interface cladding and many 1/8” plate column covers also included. Glass Guards including almost 7,800 sq ft of Custom Glazed Guard Rail system complete with framing, anchors and anchor inserts are also part of Flynn’s contract. There is even a large quantity of prefinished corrugated steel cladding; again with a complete subgirt, vapour barrier and insulation system. More than 2,100 square feet of aluminum louvers are included; some with blank-off panels, some with bird screens and another 15 customs louvers that are designed to match the profile appearance of the corrugated steel cladding.
But that’s not all. Flynn can do it all, and is, by also including Kawneer AA3900 sliding doors, manually operated aluminum revolving doors, automatic sliding doors, and custom aluminum swing doors—some with modified glazing system to accommodate 4-sided SSG glazing. And that pretty much rounds out the package, and shows the great diversity and capabilities of this company. Congratulations to all involved and best of luck with the project. Flynn has arrived in the Contract Glazing and Curtainwall markets. Just watch us grow! Oh, and by the way, Maple Leaf Square, where 400 square foot bachelor suites cost from $189,900 to $1.3 million for a 2,124 square foot penthouse, is 100% sold out! Imagine that!
Victoria Memorial Museum Building Restoration Project The ‘Lantern’ (below), as it’s known, is a joint venture consortium of architects Barry Padolsky Associates Inc. Architects, Kawabara Payne McKenna, Blumberg (KPMG) Architects and Gagnon, Letellier Cyr, Architects.
The walls of the ‘Lantern’ will feature approximately 10,200 square feet of Triple Glazed Structural Glass Walls with solid glass structural fins. These fins will be suspended from a cantilevered roof truss and are being custom built—designed here in Canada and supplied by Pilkington Glass UK. Flynn is scheduled to install in March 2008. Kitchener Crews Tackle Another Busy Season of Re-Roof Projects
Ottawa Branch Doing Their Bit for the ‘Environment’ Well, for Ottawa’s R.O. Pickard Environmental Center Digester Expansion, that is.
Above, crew members Todd Drevor, Foreman John (JR) Rae, Jimmy Cottle, Shawn Cadiew, Darren Buckaway, and Cornell Park (Dave Park was not available for the photo— presumably he’s the only one still working) are seen the roof of the 12,000 square foot re-roof project for the Upper Grand District School Board through the IRC Group. The project featured a Soprema cold-applied system as the roofing system of choice.

Our Ottawa branch secured a contract to supply and install an energy efficient, insulated metal cladding system for the 130’-high Control Tower, Electrical Building and two round, 255’ diameter, Digester Tanks that also stand more than 100’ high. Designer was CH2M Hill Canada Ltd. while Doran Construction was the general contractor. Flynn Project Foreman was Victor Mazerolle while Superintendent was Stephan Lalonde.

More than 67,000 square feet of cladding in two different colours, complete with 5”thick Mineral Wool insulation and Blueskin peel and stick membrane covered most of the enclosures. The contract not only included the cladding, but the TPO roofing on the tanks, EPDM roofing on the outer buildings, as well as the waterproofing.

Swiss Wall System Imported for Ottawa Condo LEED Project First of its Kind in Canada Hamilton branch Estimator Kevin Longpre was instrumental in securing this unique project with Dundurn Edge Developments Inc. The first of its kind to be completed in Canada, this LEED ‘Platinum’ project was featured as the cover article in the ‘Condo’ Section of the Saturday edition of the Toronto Star in early July. A building with a LEED designation for New Construction and Major Renovations version 1.0 is an adaptation of the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System (LEED), but tailored specifically for Canadian climates, construction practices and regulations. Projects are rated and certified based on the products and services utilized in the building construction. A point score is calculated, following an independent review and audit based on documentation submitted by design and construction teams. On this project, the building roof areas are approximately 24,000 sq ft and consist of two layers of polyiso insulation on a kraft vapor retarder covered with a ¼” densdeck and mechanically fastened TPO membrane.
Designer Busby, Perkins and Will (Calgary) wanted to use something different on Currents Condominium, a multi-story condominium complex in Ottawa, owned by Windmill Developments Ltd. So for the project they specified Swiss Pearl Cementitious Panels from Eternit, Switzerland, in three different colours. Led by Superintendent Mike Foster and Foreman Denis Sigouin, Flynn’s crews installed more than 28,000 square feet of the Fibre Reinforced Cementitious material. In addition, some 1,300 square feet of insulated SolarWall cladding, and 3,600 square feet of insulated Corrugated Cladding on the Penthouse. General contractor AECON Ltd. also contracted Flynn to supply and install the ply mod-bit roofing as well as the TPO roofing on the penthouse.

Kanata Mazda… ZOOM ZOOM! With the Kanata Mazda project, the Ottawa branch became the latest branch to participate in the Flynn/Mazda re-branding campaign. The contract called for Flynn to supply and install more than 3,400 square feet of Accumet 2000 composite panels in traditional Mazda Grey, Mazda Blue, and Silver Metallic. As well, some 7,200 square feet of insulated corrugated metal siding installed horizontally. General contractor was Mar Gard Builders Ltd. for owner Vic Dilawry of Vik One. The designer was Liff & Tolot Architects Inc. Flynn Foreman on-site was Paul Richard with Superintendent Stephane Lalonde.

What a Difference a Month Makes Pictured below, taken on June 29th, crews are installing the first few unitized glass panels on the exciting new Research In Motion project in Bedford, NS. Framing of the panels began assembly in mid-May with the first two trucks arriving on-site during the first week of June. Some thirty-three additional trucks are expected to be needed before the project is completed.
Halifax Branch: Breaking News in Glazing In early May, Flynn Canada Ltd. entered into a purchase agreement with Challenger Glass, a local glass and glazing company in the Halifax area. We welcome former owner of Challenger, Brian Keough, to Flynn Canada.
The department has also secured regular scheduled maintenance work for the facility. Lori Dunn and Jeff Spurrell are taking care of the office side of the Service Department under Jon White’s direction.
Halifax production recently completed a Canadian Tire store project for general contractor Marco Maritimes Ltd. But this was no run-of-the-mill roofing project. At just over 130,000 square feet, it’s the largest Canadian Tire store in Canada. And our Halifax crews completed this job from start to finish in just SIX days. In fact, they had amazingly achieved water tightness in less than FOUR days. The roof assembly was a 4” Dow deckmate with 1 layer of EPDM and tons of ¾ to 1 ½” rounded rock. 850 concrete patio pavers were also installed. According to Roofing Superintendent Greg McAdam, “The general contractor was blown away by our production and performance. This job has set the benchmark for our competitors in Atlantic Canada for this type of system; this has simply never ever been achieved before in this region of Canada and we will continue to strive to become better.”
Brian had worked with AGS during the past year and a half on the Halifax Air Terminal Building project, previously featured in the Flash. He had initially taken a lead role in first setting up the glass division in Halifax including a new Glass and Glazing Service Department. Since then, Brian has taken a senior role in the production area, dealing with all kinds of field issues and making sure that both our production and service department crews run smoothly. Brian’s first main project with Flynn Halifax has been the RIM project (updated on this page). So Brian, best of luck and welcome! And the new Halifax Glazing Service Department has already been busy with a number of small work orders. Yet recently they received their first large service contract. The project will see Flynn perform a sealed unit replacement on Manulife Tower One, right on the waterfront in Halifax harbour.
Marco Maritimes Blown Away by Flynn’s Performance
A key factor in the success of the project was the ability of the branch to share information and learn from our two major branches that produce these roof systems; Vancouver and Toronto. Using certain fundamentals from each of the two combined to make Halifax production now also a predominate branch in this type of market.
The picture above was taken July 28th and shows the excellent progress to date. RIM is the first ever unitized glazing project for Flynn… so far all is going well and schedules are being met. Todd Hallam, Toronto, is the Project Manager for the this project while Lori Dunn is the local Halifax Project Coordinator. Once the project is completed, we’ll feature it one more time in a future issue of the Flash.

9-Storey Apartment St. John’s Branch: Atlantic Staff News Roof Replacement Continuing Growth Moncton branch ‘Goes Cold’ in Saint John’s More than 13,500 square feet of coldapplied roof system was installed in lieu of the torch-applied 2-ply modified bitumen roof system specified for this project. As part of our due diligence to reduce open flame applications and minimize risk for Flynn Canada and our customers, we offered the owner a cold-applied roof system for this project. Even though the cost was substantially more than our competitor’s price for the specified system, we explained the risks his tenants would be exposed to with a typical open flame application. When everything was considered, Flynn was awarded the project; consisting of the removal of the existing gravel and extruded polystyrene insulation, with repairs made to the existing 4-ply membrane so that it could be used as a vapour barrier for the new system. We also installed a composite express board and cap sheet in ColdTack adhesive, with hot air welded seams as well. All seams were completed by the new Leister hot air robotic welder (above). Handheld hot air welders were utilized for completing all detail work. This roof was installed by a five-man crew and completed successfully within the scheduled time frame.

Enos emailed me about his progress and I just had to print it: We have continuously picked up jobs, and are currently working on a number of schools here in town, i.e. Gonzaga High School, the School for the Deaf, as well as a number of others including Memorial University. We have just finished up Gilbert Court and are now working on Baltimore and just picked up the Technical Engineering Building. We have also picked up a number of others outside of St. John’s, such as the Smallwood Academy in Gambo and Herdman Colligate in Corner Brook. Feel the enthusiasm! Way to go, Enos!
Branches Team Up on Atlantic Canada’s First LNG Port
The new Liquid Natural Gas (or LNG) plant and port is being built in Saint John, N.B., and will be the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada. It’s a major undertaking by joint-venture partners The Irving Group of Companies and Repsol YPF. Our Halifax branch has been chosen as a major sub-trade to provide architectural panels, metal cladding, and the roofing of the process buildings. Metal crews from Flynn Halifax and Roofing crews from Flynn Moncton will team up to perform the work. We’ll get a progress report with real pictures in the next Flash! Good luck, boys! Flynn’s Moncton branch welcomes Marc Collin, Estimator, and Renette Allain, Project Coordinator. Both come to us from New Brunswick Community College where the branch had participated in a job fair earlier this year. A booth was set up at the fair with Human Resources personnel present for the function. Although many of them were looking for local employment, there were a number of individuals who enquired about employment opportunities in the Vancouver, Alberta, and Ottawa branches as well.
Halifax branch The Halifax branch would like to officially welcome the following new employees; Sean Wurster, Risk Manager—Atlantic Region (who, by the way, relocated to Halifax from Syracuse, New York), Jeff Spurrell in Glass and Glazing Sales and Estimating, and Alan McCarty, who has moved from part-time to a full-time position in Metals Estimating. And congratulations to Sean Wurster, Shaun Bowers, and Alan McCarty, who all got married this summer. Also to Joel Scott, who received his CET designation as a Structural Engineering Technologist. Way to go Joel!
St. John’s branch Flynn was involved in a rescue mission in Newfoundland over the summer while on the jobsite at Gilbert Court. If you recall, we told you in the last Flash that Perry Wheaton had transferred from the Kitchener to the St. John’s branch. Well, apparently old Perry made quite a splash with the locals when he saved a family of ducklings that had accidentally fallen down into a drain (shown above). Seriously, nice going Perry….we need more guys like you! And congratulations also to Perry and his wife Michelle on the birth of their 3rd child in mid-August; daughter Aimee.
