President’s Message
‘CDA/2007 NHL Awards Gala’
As was indicated in the last issue of Flynn Flash, the company has adopted the Canadian Diabetes Association as our official charitable cause. Shortly after committing to this quality organization, we were made aware that the Canadian Diabetes Association was the official charity for the NHL Alumni Association as well. We were also made aware that the NHL Alumni controls the tickets for the Annual NHL Awards Gala each year, held in Toronto on June 14th, AND that they were in the process of searching for a title sponsor this year. Well, the dots were soon connected and we decided to take them up on their offer and turn this event into a customer appreciation event exclusive to Flynn Canada Ltd. as well as a tool to raise the awareness of this great cause. Our very best customers from right across Canada were invited and plans were made on very short notice for us to experience an event like our company has never experienced. What a way to launch our involvement with the CDA! And what an event! We are hopeful that some of the customers that were invited to enjoy this experience will adopt this worthy cause within their companies as well. (And don’t forget to tune in to the CBC for live coverage!) We also decided to invite a few special Flynn staff as guests whose lives have been affected by this dreadful disease. For instance, Leon Milando (Vancouver Service Foreman) who was devastated when he lost his 15-month-old daughter to diabetes-related complications; to Rose Hay (London Branch Administrator) who donated one of her kidneys to her mother; to Monica Capobianco (Toronto Branch Coordinator) whose 16-year-old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes three years ago and who is learning how to live with the disease. There are, of course, many other people within our company who have been affected by diabetes, there are sadly just too many to mention here. But the experience that these people—and many others—have gone or are going through is the reason we are involved with this cause. We have already heard a number of heart-wrenching stories as well as a number of heart-warming ones. Involvement with this cause tends to keep things in proper perspective, in terms of what is truly important. I am pleased to report that several committees are underway across the regions of the company since we announced our involvement with diabetes related causes three months ago. There was no doubt in my mind that the people within our company would step up to the plate and get involved. This is the heart-warming part. I encourage you to get involved as well. Information on the various committees is contained on the following page. The chances are that MOST of us will be affected by this disease during our lifetime either directly or via a loved one. Corporate News Diabetes Committee Up and Running As a follow up to the article in the Winter ’07 Flynn Flash outlining Flynn Canada Ltd.’s charitable commitment to the Canadian Diabetes Association, we proudly introduce our newly assembled Diabetes Committee! The committee members from the Toronto and Corporate offices include: Carlos Medeiros, Erica Toth, Kathy-Jo McAdam, Kim Foster, Monica Capobianco, and Tammy Freeman. Committee members from the west include Andrea Mork and Mike Wallis from the Vancouver Branch as well as Kim Gaskill and Marie Frenette from the Victoria Branch. These ten individuals have volunteered their time to support Flynn’s cause of raising funds and awareness to fight the disease that affects more than 2 million Canadians. Kim Foster, Human Resources Manager and Committee member, is asking for YOUR help: “We need your support! Let’s work as a team. Together we CAN make an impact. Your input, questions, and ideas are always welcome, so please contact any one of your Diabetes Committee members anytime.” And how’s this for team spirit; Tammy, who has taken on the role of Human Resources Administrator, and Monica, who is Administrative Assistant to John Silva, are both new employees. Both had only been with the company for a matter of days, quite literally, when they selflessly volunteered. Please join us in congratulating Tammy and Monica on their new positions with the Flynn team, as well as all of those signed up to help fight this disease.
Human Resources Recruiting at Job Fairs, Home and Abroad As our company continues to grow, the need to find more high quality people to join our team becomes paramount. In an effort to recruit experienced roofers and sheet metal workers, corporate and branch-level representatives recently visited two job fairs in Germany to explore the labour market and to meet foreign workers who may be interested in contributing their skills to Flynn. Below, Human Resources Manager Kim Foster and Calgary branch’s Dave Herman are pictured ready to go at our booth at the German job fair. Our representatives were also on hand to answer questions for those wanting to learn about the Canadian marketplace and Flynn’s many branches, who are looking for additional support during the busy summer season.

Adam submitted that the Edmonton Service Department had found an ideal product, Alsans Flashing, for the replacement of torch-applied membranes. Explains Adam, “We have been using it throughout the winter months here in Edmonton, so do not see any climatic hindrances from coast to coast. It does require warm and dry scenarios, but the use of air dryers is far safer than torches, and issues with winter preparation is countered by no fire watch”. The Cadillac Eagle V42-DD welder offers a clean, efficient, heat-welded seam for modified roofing system. The system uses a 220v removable gun with an automatic drive cart. The gun is available as a hand welder as well for high-speed hand welding of SBS seams. This welder has been used in Vancouver (Jim Matsuo), Toronto (Bill Latimer), and Moncton (Jean LeBeau) with systems both hot and cold mopped and heat welded seams as an alternative to torch cap. Leister recently came out with a similar machine called the Bitumat. Vancouver’s Holt Renfrew Project
B.C. Region Vancouver Branch Knows How to Bag a Good Job —Literally! River Rock Casino is a familiar project for many Flynn employees, as it has had extensive coverage on the Flynn Portal, PowerPoint presentations, and past Flynn Flash articles. It is also familiar to many people in the industry in BC for its awardwinning design. On the north side of the casino is a small pub which is nestled next to a Marina. Graham Construction called upon Flynn Canada to be their roofing subcontractor. With a tight schedule due to rough weather, and after many negotiations, Graham decided that it was in their best interest to quite literally bag this building utilizing a Matakana scaffolding and tarping system. Although extremely costly, they realized it may have been the only solution to moving the project move forward in one of the worst winters BC has ever seen. Our schedules were also backed up, but because of this decision we were able to accommodate our customer, and in a timely manner. We called upon Mike Connelly and his crew to perform this cold-applied SBS on rain days only. Right-hand man James Brown took control of the project’s day-today. James and the crew did a bang up job in getting this roof completed on time and also managed to achieve outstanding safety scores in the process. Good job guys!
‘Logistical nightmare’ in downtown Vancouver The Holt Renfrew project, completed recently by our Vancouver branch, is located at the corner of Dunsmuir and Granville, one of the busiest corners in the heart of downtown Vancouver. The logistical challenges that go along with construction are magnified on these kinds of sites. Not only is the site constantly congested with vehicular traffic in and around the site, but it’s also attached to the largest shopping centre in Vancouver— with pedestrians everywhere! Ledcor Special Projects was the general contractor on the project and signed up Flynn to be part of their team. The extensive scope of work taken on by Flynn Canada included; a tie-in to the existing roof, a new café roof, a new anchor system installed and sealed along one wing of the roof, roof replacement for a bridge that extended over the roadway, ground level water-proofing, paving stones, and over 400 lineal feet of gutter waterproofing. (Ed. note: Wow! Is that all?) The early stages of the project were tackled by Luis Pauta and his crew, who came in to take care of some preliminary tie-in areas that were critical path and needed attention right away. Once Luis had wrapped up this phase of the work, he was able the return to his other project and turn the rest over to Brent Wentland and his crew (above-right), who came in to tackle the remainder of the project including the café roof.

This type of crew movement is not particularly preferred and is actually somewhat unusual. In this instance, however, it proved necessary in order to stay on schedule and keep our customer satisfied. The workflow actually improved considerably because of the smooth transition of responsibility between the crews. Because each crew worked in different areas of expertise, they were able to hand over completed work without a hitch. However, there were some challenges. Extremely inclement weather conditions and constantly changing details that affected scheduling, manpower disbursement, and allocation of equipment had to be successfully managed. Our guys prevailed through teamwork and a good working relationship with Ledcor to get the project completed on time.

From Sea to Sky, it Just Doesn’t Get Any Prettier Than This Folks In 2005, Flynn Canada Ltd began construction at the Sea to Sky University with the TPO roofing contract for the Recreation Building. In 2006, construction continued with the roofing and cladding installation of the University Building. Now, in 2007, the Library Building is well underway and is expected to be complete by year’s end. This university campus is carved into the mountains of beautiful Squamish, BC, between North Vancouver and Whistler and is recessed off the main Sea to Sky Highway. The site is a hidden jewel tucked away within the private confines of an incredible mountain range. The view is spectacular and often taken for granted by local residents, but is worthy of recognition as one of the most spectacular campuses this province, and country, has to offer. This roofing crew photo below was taken on a beautiful BC day and includes (L–R): Jeremy Hall, William Ritchie, Qi (Tommy) Ming, Stephen Broll, Flashing Foreman Ron Miller, Paul Martin, Sean Biesty, Flashing Senior Foreman Clarence Hall, Gary Dixon, Crane Operator Robin Moench, Roofing Foreman Dave Willey, John Powshuk, Alan Sorrell, Tim Richardson, and Thomas Wiens. Dave Duncan, Abe Peters, Jason Peters, Terrance Peters and Mike Visscher were absent from the photo as they had returned home to work on another project.
Below, roofers prepare for some extreme winter conditions, seen looming in the background. And yes, they do have their harnesses on under warmer clothing and are tied-off in two directions. During the first phase in 2005, Flynn was only awarded the roofing portion of the project. However, after construction began, Flynn was awarded both the roofing and cladding contracts on the following two phases. Both the Sea to Sky University and Library Building were included in Flynn’s roofing contract. On the Library, Joe Jackson and his crew of Kevin Timms, Joe Bourque and Stelios Papanicolaou worked diligently to help maintain the schedule without compromising the quality workmanship Flynn Canada customers have come to expect. Dave Willey and his crew managed to persevere through the less-than-ideal conditions thrown at them by Mother Nature to install the single-ply TPO roof system. Approximately 7,000 square feet of corrugated metal cladding was also installed on both buildings, complete with Z-bars and Tyvek. Yet another high-quality performance on a multi-disciplined project from Flynn Canada. Well done, guys! You’re a big part of what sets us apart from our competition. Keep up the good work.
M’akola Housing The M’akola Group of Societies is a local organization that provides affordable housing to those in need. They own and manage a large number of facilities in the Greater Victoria area. Flynn Canada was recently awarded two re-roofing contracts for them, and after our strong performance we have high hopes for more in the future. Our shingling crew completed both projects professionally and efficiently and our clients were very pleased with their work and attitude. We hope that the great service provided by Wayne McClintock, Ray Ball, Peter Grant, Nicole Van Nice, Jordan Cooke, Mike Fuller, and James Davidson will result in further business with M’akola!
Our Emergency Crews Praised
A self-explanatory email from Joe Pelliccia, Flynn Canada Ltd. Safety Officer/C.S.O. for British Columbia, to all involved on the airport project at Flynn: “Today, I received a phone call from Michael Turner, who is the CSO for Ledcor out at the YVR, regarding our workers. There was an air horn blast heard throughout the site and our Flynn employees responded immediately to the blast. Lee Schramm and Michael Pipen assisted the CSO’s first aid team by grabbing emergency supplies and escorting them to the location where the blast had originated from. As it turned out the emergency blast was nothing more than an accident, some material struck the air horn setting it off. Ledcor took the time to call us and thanks us for our team’s levelheaded thinking and for assisting with an unknown situation. I’m taking this opportunity, on behalf of Ledcor and Flynn Canada, to thank Leroy Schramm and his crew for a job well done.” Super job Leroy and Michael! Oh, did you get the Tim Horton’s donuts that Joe promised?

Vancouver Branch Exhibits at Careers Job Fair

Arranged by Jim Matsuo, Production Roofing Manager, our Vancouver Branch exhibited the opportunities that exist within Flynn at a high school job fair, held April 3rd and 4th at the Cloverdale Agri-plex, a suburb of Vancouver.
Tuscany Village is a new construction condominium project that consists of six separate buildings and is one of Flynn Victoria’s largest contracts to date. Construction of all buildings is in full swing and successful completion of this project requires a significant amount of coordination. Our hardworking roofing crew of Foreman Geoff Myers, Ron Hill, Nate Mader, John Kulczycki, Trevor McLaren, Jeff Meyers, Wahib Othman, and Dave Alldrick has been on site since November of 2006.
The fair also featured a Trades Show that included live mock-ups of various trade
demonstrations within the construction industry that students could view, learn from, and even consider as a career choice.

The general contractor had assigned a Site Superintendent to each building and Geoff Myers did an incredible job to keep the project’s production progressing to everyone’s satisfaction. Thanks to Geoff for his considerable efforts on behalf of Flynn. We would also like to recognize the efforts made by Ken Littleproud and Katherine Cliff (Project Estimator) who also took on the role of Project Manager. Their hard work and attention to detail were an important part of the success of this project.
The evening of the April 3rd was open to the public and was attended by several skilled tradesmen. By exhibiting the opportunities that exist at Flynn, several viable candidates were interviewed and continue to be hired, as required. The Flynn exhibitors were Jim Matsuo and Blake Merrick (Metals Project Manager) on the first day with Cale Lacasse (Roofing Coordinator) and Sung Cho (Metals Coordinator) on day two.
Island Branch Targets Panel Development
Part of Flynn Victoria’s growth initiatives for the past year was to upgrade the branch’s abilities to install architectural panels. With the help of National Accounts, we have secured several smaller projects of this nature. These projects have turned out to be very successful as our estimators and crews have enhanced their level of experience and knowledge. The branch would like to thank Estimator Rich Stanton and Foreman Jason O’Hanley for their efforts.
British Columbia Staff News To keep up with our continued growth in the Vancouver Lower Mainland area, the following changes to our Vancouver branch Lower Mainland Senior Management structure were made effective on May 1st: • Ken Smith is working in the area of Business Development and moved from a role of leadership to coach in supporting the BC region moving forward. • Leo Davidson is repositioned to General Manager—Roofing Division. • Wayne Mack is repositioned to General Manager/Partner—Metals Division. In other BC staff news, Kirtis Bergen has assumed responsibility as Vancouver branch’s Roofing Project Manager. Kirtis has spent the better of the past two years taking leaps and bounds as Superintendent. Rob Wetland has assumed the role of Vancouver branch’s Roofing Superintendent, taking over for Kirtis. Rob is a former Roofing Foreman whose growth over the past year has earned him the opportunity to take on this challenge. And Ray Ball recently accepted the position of Shingling Foreman at our Victoria branch.

Congratulations are in order to Camille Cote and his wife Joan who earlier this year became first-time grandparents; a grandson named Gabriel David, born March 27th, to daughter Michelle Jack.
Victoria Congratulations also go out to Field Roofer James Shepherd & Lauren Spadoni on the birth of a healthy baby girl on April 8th as well as to Travis Stumpf & Siobhan Roberts on the birth of their son, Kane Cole Stumpf on April 3rd. Flynn Canada Re-Roofs a Historic Edmonton Landmark Risk management was the number one concern at St. Joseph’s Basilica, one of Edmonton’s most historic monuments, as the Jasper Avenue landmark was set to receive a new roof.
Canadian Freightways Opens New Terminal
Also included in the contract was the supply, fabrication, and installation of our Accumet 2000 aluminum composite panels. Installed over drywall, our crews supplied and installed Tyvek house-wrap and galvanized hat bars. The panel reveal locations were configured by Flynn to accommodate maximum plank sizes. A nice piece of work people!
Small but sweet! Flynn Calgary was chosen by general contractor Luxe Developments Ltd. to supply and install 3, 4, and 8 millimetrethick Prodema Specialty panels on the walls, overhead doors, and even the man doors of this unique upscale condominium. The wood grain panels were highlighted by black, metal reveals. 3mm Prodema panels were cut to the exact size of the four overhead door sections as well as the four mandoor leafs. Al Downey and Doug Downey did a really nice job of installing this premiere product.
Flynn Canada Ltd. was the roofing and siding sub-trade of choice for this multi-disciplined project for the new shipping and handling terminal for Calgary’s Canadian Freightways. Our Calgary branch roofing crews supplied and installed a black, non-reinforced EPDM roofing membrane, insulation, and ballast system over concrete and steel roof deck. They fabricated and installed the parapet cap flashings as well. The insulated foam panel system called Flynn Speedwall was installed on a structural steel frame by others. The 2” poured-in-place insulated panels have an ‘R’ value of 15, and are fabricated from pre-painted steel. All related flashings were supplied and installed by the branch’s metal crews to match the panels.
Qube Condo Project
We Practice What We Preach Some of you hockey fans may recognize this church; it’s the church where Wayne and Janet Gretzky were married! Original specifications for the project called for SBS torch on roof system. However, the branch recognized the risk involved with such an application and suggested to the architect and contractor to look at an EPDM roof instead. To mitigate the risk of torch-on, the branch was given approval to proceed.

One of the important strengths of Flynn Canada Ltd., and one that we emphasize in our marketing efforts, is our ability to put crews onto projects anywhere, anytime. With sixteen locations coast to coast, we’re able to mobilize crews as needed. When our Winnipeg crews were unable to work during an extended period of –40° weather, they were off to Edmonton to help ease an extended backlog at that branch. The crew that helped out were (below, L–R): Foreman Jaroslaw Rzedzian, Anatoliy Babaschko, Robert Smith, Andrzej Milosz, Louie Gagne, Tom Watcher, and Wayne Maki. The guys completed three projects and were able to give the branch some much needed breathing room. “Having multiple branches, can help out at times like this. Bird Construction chose Flynn Industrial when it needed a pre-engineered building installed for owner, Suncor.
Owner, OPTI Air Liquide chose Atco Noise Management to build their new facility in Anzac, Alberta.
The scope of work on the project, located in Fort McMurray, Alberta, included the pre-engineered primary frames and secondary steel, light gauge girts and purlins, as well as insulated foam roof and wall panels. Terry, Edmonton’s single-ply expert, along with Glenn DePaulo and Peter Gutsche developed the ingenious tire system, shown right, that drapes over the curved roof surface of the penthouses. Along with standard fall protection devices, the system is designed to give workers a place to rest as well as a place to brace themselves as they hot air-weld the membrane seams together.
National Accounts Efforts Pay Bank ‘Dividends’ Edmonton branch has been busy over the past number of months reaping the benefits of our National Accounts Department’s successes.
Our Edmonton branch has landed five new ScotiaBank banking facility projects as well as three new Bank of Montreal projects.
City of Calgary Negotiates Roofing Contracts with Flynn Canada Ltd. Foreman Alex Jacob and Lead Hand Steve Campanaro are shown below on the site of the Chinook LRT station. Due to the logistical nightmares involved with these projects, the City of Calgary negotiated the work with our Calgary branch. Three of the six stations to be built as part of this major
expansion of the mass transit network were completed as of press time. Our Roofing production crews handled four of the stations while our Service crews are doing the other two. Trevor Goodale, Jeff Greenway, Kyle Zenith, and Dallas Wilson were all part of the roofing crew.
Easily identifiable, ScotiaBank’s vibrant red towers, above-left, utilize smaller 2’ square modified Accumet 2000 composite aluminum panel modules. The Bank of Montreal, above-right, opt for more a traditional panel size. Both really stand out as the re-branding competition continues. Flynn has contracts to complete one more location for each bank.

Calgary wins the BOMA Award for Service Excellence The Service Department of the Calgary branch was recently presented with the BOMA Award for Construction Projects, based on a service re-roof contract at the Stock Exchange Tower. The project was lead by Foreman Bob Duval and his team who worked diligently with Barry Ursulak from Tremco Weather Proofing Technologies Canada (the owner’s consultant as well as GWL Realty Advisors— Property Manager for the tower). Chris Fecteau was our Service Superintendent. Congratulations!
Calgary Branch’s ‘Weight Loss Challenge’ The Calgary branch recently held a weight loss competition. Weigh-in was mid-January and was set to run for about six weeks. To make things fair for everyone, the competition was based on the total percentage of weight lost. The big loser (or winner) was Gerry Edwards, Service Manager, who dropped a hefty 39 pounds or almost 18% of his original weight. (Ed. note: is that safe?) Estimator Colin Lazaruk was a close second, losing more than 37 pounds or almost 17% of his original weight. The group combined for a total loss of 151 pounds!
City of Champions Adds Flynn to List The underdog Flynn Flyers overcame the odds and fought to a stunning 5–2 victory over the heavily favoured Enoch Fun-Timers to capture league supremacy in the local Alberta Recreational Hockey League. Led by the gritty and determined play of rookie Bill Rennich, shown kneeling, front row far-right in the team photo below, had this to say about the team: “I just want to say, that I have never been a part of a ‘championship’ team, and that working together and playing as a team on throughout this season has been absolutely fantastic and enjoyable. This shows our Flynn spirit and that we always strive to be the best. This is what we commit to on a day-to-day basis, isn’t it?”
Calgary Slow Pitch The Calgary branch recently put together a slow pitch team in order to participate in a tournament supporting Easter Seals. The tournament included three guaranteed games, a dance, and a live auction. Everyone had a blast! The Flynn ‘Rum Runners’ helped make the tournament a success as the charity event raised more than $8,000!

Winnipeg—Founding Branch Moves Into New Facility Just after press time for the Winter edition of the Flash, the Winnipeg branch moved into their new facility in January. Winnipeg has been a bellwether branch for Flynn since the company was founded in 1978. Even though our roots are in Winnipeg, this branch was virtually forced to operate from an old dysfunctional, renovated office and shop. Mostly because the company was growing too quickly elsewhere and the elsewhere always needed the attention.
With new equipment and furnishings our oldest branch has now been brought into the 21st century by becoming Flynn’s latest state-of-the-art facility. Congratulations to Branch Manager Mike Johnson and Regional Vice-President Don Belton as well as the rest of the staff. From where we sit, she’s a real beauty!
The Regina branch underwent a pretty major facelift this spring. Renovations to the exterior of existing building saw Spencer Sayer (page bottom) installing metal cladding and Accumet 2000 architectural panels. Major renovations were also made to the interior as well as adding office space for the growing branch. Saskatchewan is going through a major economic up-turn being fuelled by world demands for natural resources including oil, both domestically as well as from Alberta. Hey Spencer, are these square panels a little bit easier to install than the ones at RCMP? And during all of this construction, Regina Administrator Harlynn Chuback (above) was buried in paper.
Saskatchewan’s Waldheim School Waldheim, Saskatchewan, was the site of another re-roof project for Flynn, with some 18,000 square feet of SBS mopped-on roofing. Again, for risk management reasons, the Flynn branch was able to change the specification away from a torch cap sheet to a mop-on cap sheet. Regina’s RCMP Heritage Centre Nearing Completion As reported in the Summer ’06 issue of the Flash, Flynn had been contracted to provide the roof and wall systems on this prestigious Heritage Centre for the RCMP. Well, some nine months later work is finally being completed on this architectural gem as the final few panels are put in place (below). The architectural design of this structure has drawn a lot of attention and will be featured again in the Flash when landscaped.

The Regina Public School Board and RMIS Roofing Consultants awarded Flynn Canada’s Regina branch nearly 32,000 square feet of re-roof on four schools this spring.
Located in Pelican Rapids, Manitoba, this school is more than 600 km north of Winnipeg. Flynn Canada crews were there on-site completing more than 98,000 square feet of floor and roof deck. In addition, more than 60,000 square feet of Flynn Accu-Steel metal roofing with almost 20,000 square feet of metal wall panels were installed.
McLurg School The first to be done was the McLurg School re-roof project, which required more than 5,000 square feet of 2-ply SBS roofing. The crew responsible for the project included (right, L–R): James Donnelly, Chris Lanz, Foreman Brendan Lowndes, and Aaron Bjorklund.
Sheldon Williams Collegiate
Next was the Sheldon Williams Collegiate. Yet another school re-roof project, this time some 4,400 square feet of 2-ply SBS re-roof was completed by our guys, including (above, L–R): Dwayne Crowe, Albert Belhemeure, Foreman Harley Tawpisin and Perry Morrisseau.
Husky Ethanol The latest of Manitoba’s environmentally friendly projects Signs abound that Manitoba is going ‘green’. First the province announced the creation of a wind farm to ‘generate’ electricity, and now Husky Oil is leading the way with their Minnedosa, Manitoba ethanol plant.
Flynn has had a long history of working in the far north. Employing local labour and supporting local commerce, Flynn has completed literally dozens of projects, mostly over the winter months, and many where communities are only accessible by winter roads.
Flynn Canada was selected to supply and install more than 40,000 square feet of metal deck, 11,000 square feet of insulated metal roofing and 68,000 square feet of metal wall panel on five different industrial buildings.

Saskatoon’s Strikingly Modern Affinity Credit Union General Contractor Wolfe Group subcontracted Flynn Canada Ltd. to supply and install the building’s wall systems for Saskatoon’s Affinity Credit Union. The work included some 4,600 square feet of anodized aluminum screen panel, 1,600 square feet of VicWest AD300 hidden fastener profile cladding, on 2 layers of 2” Z-bars with AF530 insulation and Sopralene 180 Heavy Duty air/vapour barrier.
In addition, more than 15,000 square feet of 4mm Accumet 2000 architectural panel system was fabricated, supplied and installed over 2 layers of Zbars, the same insulation and air/vapour barrier system. The men who worked on the project include (above, L–R): Devin Schlosser, Michael Laford, Greg Manitoken, Foreman Alfredo Bravo, Nicole Hrycak, and Frank Bond. Great looking project!

With deep sadness we report on the passing of Chuck Spiars. Chuck had been with the London branch since it was founded as Northern Roofing 1972 Ltd., a division of Peerless Enterprises. Chuck facilitated the transition between Northern Roofing 1972 Ltd. and Flynn Canada during the 1997 acquisition. He was— and will always be—recognized as an instrumental contributor to the success, growth and development of both. In the past few years, Chuck provided his expertise as a consultant for Flynn. Chuck was a proud husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He was also a gentleman, friend, and role model for many. He will be sadly missed but always fondly remembered.

Crews busy ‘ripping it up’ with re-roof projects
Mike Rodrigues and his crew continue to service our clients with respect—keeping in mind their needs and concerns such as completing their projects in a timely fashion in order to minimize disruptions.
This is how consultant, Building Consultants Ltd., from Chicago, who represented the owners, Marriott Hotels, viewed Flynn Canada Ltd. after witnessing our work.

With a total re-roof area of 70,000 square feet, Phase 2 consisted of a built-up insulated wood platform, fully shingled, and a 2-ply firerated modified bitumen roof system.
What was unique was that this project incorporated a new roofing system. The system consisted of a Kraft vapor retarder, mechanically fastened polyiso insulation, mopped and tapered, with a cover board covered in 4-ply type IV fiberglass felt and gravel membrane. The perimeter flashings consisted of a 3-ply #15 felt with a mopped modified cap sheet.
Because the hotel would not allow roofing operations to proceed while conferences were in session, constant coordination was required as crews were moved from roof to roof inbetween conferences.
Other recent projects completed by the branch include the Niagara Retirement Village and The Children’s Aid Society.
Working with IRC Group, the Kitchener branch secured the contract at the City of Cambridge Public Works building this spring. The 46,000 sq ft re-roof included a new 4-ply and gravel roof system. Pictured on-site are (below, L–R) Foreman John Rae, Randy Bennett, Todd Drever, Shawn Cadieux, Dave Parks, Andrei Moroz-Filoti, Jim Cottle, and Lee Elson. While John’s crew worked on that project, new Foreman Steve Day and his crew were ripping it up at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital. This 30,000 square foot re-roof project included a new EPDM roof system. This production impediment was further compounded by the minimal access to the tower roofs, resulting in the necessity to employ a 165-ton crane to hoist materials and equipment on and off the roof areas. Flynn Canada Ltd. Superintendent on both phases was Gaspar Dacosta. Crews involved in the project were lead by Foreman Joe Neiva, Martinho (Chico) Ondas and Fernando Celistino. Congratulations on a great job, guys!

Flynn Takes on New Peterborough YMCA, Hospital Projects Peterborough Regional District Health Centre With the AGS Contract Glazing acquisition came the Peterborough Regional District Health Centre expansion project with general contractor EllisDon Ltd. The Flynn-AGS team is supplying and installing knocked down window units that are fabricated in our Toronto shop, then shipped in vans to our assembly shop in Peterborough. Then on an as-needed basis they are transferred to the site. Productivity rates have increased as crews continue to install units (pictured below) in much better weather conditions.
Peterborough YMCA The new Peterborough YMCA building opened recently to the delight of local residents.
Man… Talk About Your Sore Arms! The Pannatoni Project for Maple Engineering was a huge 700,000 square foot, mechanically-fastened, Firestone TPO roof system to FM-190 standards.
With a modern mix of contemporary materials such as block, stone, and glass, we installed horizontal corrugated wall panels, pre-painted silver metallic, to give it that 21st century look. What made the project so challenging was simply the number of fasteners required…almost half a million! As well, the building is located in Milton at the base of the Niagara Escarpment where winds are constantly howling.
The field of the roof was completed first with the perimeters being completed after the walls were in place. Antonio Fernandes was the Lead Foreman with assistance from Foremen Frank Kraus and Fernando Celestino. Gaspar Dacosta was the Superintendent. Antonio had only one complaint—He was hoping for a 700,000 square foot, 4-ply reroof instead. What a great attitude!

Toronto branch smokers take the challenge to ‘butt out!’

March was the Canadian Cancer Society’s ‘Driven to Quit Challenge’ month. Honda sponsored the challenge together with the Canadian Cancer Society. Those who registered online at www. drivetoquit.ca by the end of February and made it through March were eligible to win a Honda and other prizes from the Canadian Cancer Society. Participants in the challenge were required to hook up with a non-smoking buddy who would be there to provide positive reinforcement and encouragement.

Toronto branch’s Reg McCarthy decided that he was up for the challenge, and extended that challenge to all of the other smokers in the Toronto branch to join him on March 1st for the ‘Driven to Quit Challenge’. “Together, supporting each other, I feel we can do this. I have smoked for approximately thirty-five years, and this is the end. Guaranteed!” said Reg. The idea received an incredibly enthusiastic response from Toronto branch’s smokers. Special thanks go out to Reg, of course. But also thanks to Don Delaney, Mike Dauncey, Dan Sims, Ben Aguilar, and Ken Mahoney, who were the first to sign up to be a ‘smoker’s buddy’ in support of the cause. And thanks to all of the others who had volunteered as ‘buddies’ and helped those who have remained off the cigarettes, including yours truly (thanks Paula). For some of us, March 1st was truly our first day of being free from smoking.

Halifax Harbor Solutions
Atlantic Region PEI Government of Canada‘s Jean Canfield Building The most environmentally friendly building ever constructed by Public Works and Government Services Canada It will be a just few months before landscaping is complete on this East Coast gem. 28,000 square feet of 20-gauge corrugated, pre-painted silver metallic along with 1,500 square feet of ¼-plate aluminum panels add to the striking architecture of this modern facility. Originally an AGS project, Flynn continues with the job as part of the AGS acquisition. Windows and vents, atrium vents, the interior glass package, and two areas of curtain wall are all in our scope. In addition, photovoltaic solar shades imported from England from Colt Engineering will feed back to the building’s electrical grid. Water treatment plant This project, located on Halifax harbor, began in mid-January. Once again, general contractor Pomerleau Construction contracted the roofing sub-contract to Flynn Canada Ltd. The contract consisted of 24,800 square feet of 2-ply SBS with a mopped vapor barrier to concrete, EPS sloped insulation mopped, 2 layers fiberboard mopped, and with mopped base and cap sheets. Foreman Lewis Gale and crew of six tackled this project from day one in winter conditions, averaging 38 squares per day.
The concrete deck had to first be primed before any roofing could proceed, and with winter comes ice. Lewis and his crew prevailed, however, and got the job done. Working closely with Pomerleau’s manpower and the strict safety policies of the site, Lewis’s safety evaluation and record did not go unnoticed—averaging a 99% mark through the course of the project. Good work to the guys on this one: Nelson Ward, John Budden, Ramsey Edision, Chris Huybers, John DeLorey and Kenny Broussard. Special thanks to Roger LeBlanc and the New Brunswick crew that helped out for a few days.

Joggins Fossil Cliffs Interpretive Centre ‘Hugely important project to village’
The Joggins Fossil Cliffs Project is a “hugely important project for the village of Joggins”, explains senior architect Ron Burdoch of WHW Architects Inc. Joggins, Nova Scotia, has one of Canada’s largest fossil deposits and this LEEDS project for the Government of Canada is located steps away from the fossil remains on the Bay of Fundy.
Amherst, Nova Scotia’s, Staples Delivery Centre General Contractor Kor-Alta from Alberta (Flynn also does a lot of work with Kor-Alta in the west) contracted Flynn Halifax to supply and install some 66,000 square feet of EPDM loose laid ballasted roofing system, with 2 layers of R20 true foam insulation and poly vapour barrier. This project was completed start to finish in just four working days. Watertight status was achieved in two days—much to the astonishment of all of the trades on site. Amherst can be very difficult place to work in early March. The winds coming in off of the Bay of Fundy can be strong and continuous for days on end. Not to mention the fact that the building height is 55 feet. Foreman Lewis Gale (apt name) and his crew of eleven men managed to get a break from the weather and completed this job, posting a record 438 squares of roof in a nine hour day.

Foreman Brian MacDonald and his crew have completed the vapor barrier system and were to start roofing in early May. Pomerleau Construction has complimented our crews on their professional approach on such a detailed job scope. Please stay tuned for an update on this project in a future Flash.
Situated in beautiful Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, the Lunenburg Academy, built in 1895, is a magnificent example of early Canadian architecture and today is a National Historical Site. Owner and preserver, the South Shore Regional School Board, contracted Flynn Canada Ltd. when repairs to the mansard roof were needed. The wood shingles were replaced on the mansards in 2000, however the rolled roofing at the base of the mansard was not. All of our work was able to be completed from a manlift, as we removed the existing rolled roofing and wood shingles, installed new roof boards, adhered a base and cap sheet with adhesive, and installed new wood shingles and pine boards under the windows. Today, the building is an elementary school and the little guys especially enjoyed watching the crew work. One day one of the kids said to our crew, “You’re doing a really good job!”. It made their day! The service team who completed the job were Foreman Gerald MacCormack, Murdock Woods and Joey Nelson.
The roof on the Joggins Fossil Centre will contain living vegetation which is designed to reduce extremes in heating and cooling of the building; prevent storm water run off and help filter pollutants and CO2 out of the air. The complex roofing system is comprised of 2-ply SBS with screwed down gypsum board, self-adhered vapor barrier, R31.5 EPS insulation, 2 layers fiberboard (1 screwed, 1 mopped), a base sheet mopped and cap sheet torched, followed by green roof system designed by Soprema. Holy Mackerel! (or is it Holy Cod?)
Maintenance Work on Historic Lunenburg Academy
Halifax’s single-ply roofing production program is now on track and is poised to take on any large box in the branch’s market. Congratulations to the men for a job well done. The roofer crew that made it happen included Foreman Lewis Gale, Foreman Brian MacDonald, Second Nelson Ward, John Budden, Austin Lanney, Mike James, B.J. Wood, Bruce Hana, Chris Huybers, Kenny Broussard, John DeLorey, and Jeremy DeYoung.

Citadel High School New RONA Store in Edmundston, NB A generic project? Flynn joined general contractor Pommerleau Construction and architect Fowler Bauld & Mitchell on this beautiful new high school facility located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Flynn’s scope of work included more than 30,000 square feet of 24 gauge 7/8” deep corrugated profile metal cladding installed horizontally complete with subgirts and insulation.
Canadian retail giant RONA Hardware recently moved into the Maritimes with a new location in Edmundston, New Brunswick. Architect on the project was Jerry Coviensky Architects, and Contractor Rideau Construction awarded Flynn Canada both the roofing and wall cladding disciplines on this new facility. Our crews installed more than 24,000 square feet of insulated metal sandwich panel, both vertically and horizontally applied, complete with a channel wall liner panel, subgirts, and insulation.
The roofing consisted of a Carlisle loose laid EPDM roof system over 2 layers of EPS, Kraft VB and steel deck. It only took Roger Savois’s crew of Gram Cole, Jim Gillies, Randy Taylor, John Daley, Paul Gillies, Paul Harrow, and Pat Boon a few days to install this roof. Foreman Randy Boland along with Alain Richard and Danny Breau worked during the bitter cold winter months in Northern New Brunswick to bring this project to a successful completion.
The architect created this unique design by blending three colors very well together when utilizing the clear anodized pressure plates and caps (shown above). This application of so called ‘generic’ siding is sure a showstopper in the heart of downtown Halifax. Brian Decker and his crew of Peter Westhaver and Jeff Doane worked through some difficult winter months to bring this job in on time and under budget. Way to go!
Crews Poised to Install Product Across Maritimes
Flynn crews are poised and ready to start work on a metal restoration project for Coca-Cola in Moncton. The project is contracted through Barry O’Brian, President of Dycon Roof Consultants Inc., who looks after all Coca-Cola facilities across Canada. The men will be applying the Garnite Coating System—the first project of its type for the Moncton branch. This crew will then begin traveling across Atlantic Canada to install all Garnite Coating System projects. The men trained in the application of this system are (above, L–R): Ryan Baisley, Dale Patterson, Guy Johnson, and James Calum.
St. John’s Branch ‘Flexing Its Muscle’ The new St. John’s branch was very pleased to have been chosen as the location for the Atlantic regional meetings held there in January. The branch would like to thank everyone who made it to ‘the rock’, even though it was short lived due to a coming storm. (Ed. Note: NO! Not in Newfoundland in January, Enos!) In any case, they hope that everyone enjoyed their visit, despite the weather! The St. John’s branch has also been helping out our other branches across the country. Currently, St. John’s has five men in Vancouver, helping out during a very busy time there to ease their backlog of work. Since their commencement last August, the upstart St. John’s branch has acquired a number of re-roofing jobs, such as Government House, RNC Annex, Northwest
Atlantic Fisheries Centre, CONA—Seal Cove Campus, Montana’s Cookhouse as well as a number of service projects. As a result, the branch recently announced that they now have a full-time Service Department and would like to welcome Brent Pardy as Service Manager. Brent brings many years of experience in roofing and inspection, along with other areas of related construction exposure. The branch is also very pleased to have Perry Wheaton join them. Perry brings many years of experience in roofing and they look forward to having Perry on ‘the rock’. Sounds like things are unfolding the way they should Enos!
