President’s Message ‘Doing the Right Thing’ Flynn Canada is doing a world of good in the communities in which we live and work. In this issue of the Flynn Flash, there are a number of references to benevolent activities that are underway such as fundraising for diabetes-related causes and a host of “green” initiatives that we have on the go.

I recently sat in on one of our regular Diabetes Committee conference calls chaired by Kim Foster. This committee was formed last summer and is comprised of 19 staff members from coast to coast. There are many great ideas floating around out there and I was very encouraged by the passion everyone displayed during this meeting. It felt great to be a part of that energy, and efforts of the committee are bearing fruit in the form of funds-raised.

The committee members are listed on page 4. Diabetes is a cause close to the heart of our company and I thank everyone for their support.

Energy and Environmental Design and is a point system whereby governments have incented building owners to build to standards that use environmentally friendly construction methods.

It may cost a bit more, but it will be worth it and will underscore our commitment to being an environmentally responsible company. This will be one of a very limited number of privately funded buildings in Canada to receive LEED certification. We should be extremely proud of this achievement and communicating it to our clients and the communities we serve.

As I speak with some of the younger people within the company, it is clear to me just how much importance they place on environmental responsibility. If we want to attract the best in emerging talent to eventually lead this company, we have to be in tune with what’s important to them, and that is one more reason for us to Go Green.

Like many companies, Flynn has recognized the importance of emphasizing the protection of the environment or fundraising for worthwhile charities. A company in good health is not just about profit. We need to make profit to survive and grow, but a truly healthy company finds ways to give back to their community. I am pleased to report that we have a lot of fine people involved in efforts to do just that.

John McManus Named Chief Operating Officer In late December, Doug Flynn, President and CEO, announced the appointment of John McManus (left) to the position of Chief Operating Officer. John’s role includes responsibility for the company’s operations and leadership of the newly formed Operations Support Group based in the corporate offices.

Each Regional Vice President will now report directly to John as he focuses on improving efficiencies and identifying best practices from the various regions. The overall objective will be to implement these practices nationally and push the company to run at peak efficiency.

Management Moves Meet Alberta Market Demand In response to significant market opportunities in Alberta, particularly related to Glazing and Architectural Metals, the following management changes were recently announced: Pete Taylor (left) will re-locate from Vancouver to Edmonton to head up the Architectural Metals and Glazing efforts in the Edmonton market. Pete is currently the Senior Project Manager on the Vancouver Convention Center project; the company’s single largest contract in its history, and will see that project through before relocating.

Jon White (left) will relocate from Halifax to Calgary to head up our Architectural Metals and Glazing efforts in the Calgary market. Jon is currently the Halifax Branch Manager and will relocate after a period of transition.

Flynn Merges Resources with Bahry’s Glass in Edmonton

Shown above are Flynn Canada Corporate and Flynn Alberta Metals employees as well as the staff of Bahry’s Glass (1983) Ltd. of Edmonton, where Doug Flynn, President and CEO (seated at left), announced an agreement that saw Bahry’s merge with Flynn Canada Ltd. “This opportunity will allow Flynn to continue its growth in the Contract Glazing and Curtain Wall business with the financial resources to make a strong statement to the construction industry. The merger of resources will allow the company to take on major glazing projects throughout Western Canada, while sharing best practices with our current operations in Central Canada,” said Doug.

Ron Kokotilo and Brian Romanchuk, the principles of Bahry’s Glass, have remained with Flynn in senior management positions and with equity in the company. Doug emphasized that the agreement would ensure long term employment for the staff of Bahry’s as well as professional growth opportunities on a national and regional scale.

Bahry’s staff has merged with Flynn staff members in Alberta who are involved with our Architectural Metals division in both Edmonton and Calgary.

The merger creates synergy with Sales and Estimating, Drafting and Engineering, as well as Project and Contract Management.

Mid-West Region: Alberta “Fort Edmonton was built as part of the westward expansion of the fur trade.”

Edmonton Service becomes Part of History at Old Fort Edmonton It can be said that the Edmonton Service Division has their place in history working on the most notable historical site in Edmonton. We’re not talking about West Edmonton Mall, although there are some significant ties to the fashion industry. Fort Edmonton was built as part of the westward expansion of the fur trade. In essence, Edmonton owes its existence to the fashion industry. The royally chartered Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) established a trading post called Edmonton House in 1795.

The grandest version of the Fort rose in 1830, just below the present location of the Alberta Legislature. By 1846, it was the most important HBC post west of the Red River Settlement at Fort Garry (near modern Winnipeg). In 1915 it was dismantled until a Canada Centennial project in 1967 to reconstruct the old Fort Edmonton. It now rests upstream and on the other side of the river from its original location. This impressive residence, called Rowand House, was built in 1842 for John Rowand, Chief Factor of the HBC’s Saskatchewan District.

The roof replacement contract was with the City of Edmonton and included five buildings inside the Fort and one outside. The consultant was Willy Kotylak, with Krain Consulting. The scope of work for two of the buildings (Indian Trading House and Lauder’s Barn) was to remove and replace the existing cedar shingles. The unusual part of these roofs was the starter rows which used new Fancy Butt-Edge diamond shingles. The eaves trough on Lauder’s Barn was made out of wood lathes in a V-shape. For the remaining buildings (Rowand House, Married Men’s Quarters, Meat House, and the Chapel), the scope of work was to remove the existing two-ply vertical wood planking and granular membrane right down to the horizontal wood planking deck. The new roof assembly was then installed and included new 16mm OSB with a one-ply Colphene HR/GR black granulated self-adhering cap sheet.

Re-Branding of Winnipeg Hyundai When Winnipeg Hyundai, a local auto dealership, moved into a new building they were looking to add their own look to the premises. Flynn Canada was chosen to make it happen. The job required the removal of existing metal cladding and building wrap to accommodate new plywood and architectural panels.

The project included sealing an existing metal roof for a new sign tower, installing a peel and stick vapor barrier membrane and Tyvek building wrap over a plywood substrate, as well as fabricating and installing the new exterior consisting of Flynn’s Accumet 2000 preformed composite panel system. The panels match the company’s sophisticated colour palette of bone white, sapphire blue and bright silver metallic.

Safety is Everyone’s Concern: Flynn Office Employee Saves Lives on Toronto Site

Flynn Toronto is under sub-contract to Martinway Contracting Ltd. to install approximately 4,000 square feet of anodized aluminum panels at BCE place, near the Hockey Hall of Fame in downtown Toronto. Black and MacDonald were the General Contractors on the project and even though Flynn crews were not yet on site installing panels, Toronto Branch Project Coordinator Tara Adalaya was checking the site and doing what she does best as a coordinator.

It seemed like an ordinary site visit, but the next day Corporate Risk Manager Mike Dauncey, received an unexpected call from Jason Orvis, Superintendent for Black and MacDonald. Mr. Orvis informed Mike that “Tara saved a few lives yesterday.”

When Tara was on site she had noticed that an electric hoist (pictured below) was badly overloaded and very close to going off the edge of the 16-story building. The overloaded hoist had become very top heavy and was tipping forward over the edge of the roof. Even though the hoist was attached to a safety cable, it created a potentially deadly safety hazard.

Another worker decided it would be a great idea to try and use his body weight to help bring the hoist back to its original position. At this point both back legs were off the roof and no one could hear workers yelling to the operator below. By using some quick thinking, Tara quickly called Jason, who in turn immediately called the operator to halt hoisting.

“Nice to see that the most unlikely employees can contribute to a positive safety culture,” said Mike afterward. And as an added note, Tara was the only one on the roof who was utilizing fall protection equipment. Good to see that even our office staff takes safety precautions seriously.

Hopefully all our field employees will follow her lead and do the same. Always be conscious of safety and your surroundings, a dangerous situation can develop in seconds.

Tara said, “If no one had been on the roof, the hoist would have fallen over the roof edge. I am sure the three workers on the wall climber below would have been injured. It was a close call.”

This is the first time that the Halifax Branch Service Department had installed a self-adhered modified bitumen roof system. However, the crew was given expert training for this system last March at a seminar put on by Bakor. In addition, the Bakor technical representative presented a two hour refresher course in Flynn’s Halifax shop prior to commencing the project on site.

The hospital’s Project Manager was extremely pleased since there was little or no smell when the roof was installed. Both the base sheet and cap sheet adhered well and service crews found the products very easy to work with. Best of all, there were no adhesives to get all over their tools and clothes!

Flynn Crew Receives Safety Award at Canaport LNG Site

of the roof on Dartmouth’s Simpson Hall Building at the Nova Scotia hospital. Flynn crews received the emergency call at 9 AM that Sunday morning. By 10:30 AM the Flynn service crew was on site assessing the extent of the damage.

Concerned about patients and staff alike, the hospital maintenance staff had to know the exact extent of the damage and whether or not it would have an impact on them. Fortunately, the vapor barrier was a two-ply mopped felt and had not been damaged by the storm. As the vapor barrier was in good condition, the building was at least watertight and no evacuation or other patient transfer was necessary.
