Coaching: Ensuring a Bright Future

Hello everyone,

Here at Flynn our preference has always been to promote from within, in fact when it comes to leadership most of our senior team started on the tools. It’s important that our people develop within Flynn, because it helps them understand our culture, which we refer to as “The Flynn Way”.

As our skilled people move up, we will need to grow new talent to replace them. This means that the development of our rookies is critical to our future. That is why we are launching the Flynn University - Coaching and Rookie Program.

The Coaching and Rookie Program aims to give our rookies a coach who will share their experience, and help them through their first few months in the field. While the program will initially only be for Roofing Production, we plan for it to eventually cover all of our scopes. This coaching experience will help our rookies get up to speed in their new position. Plus with the mentorship of a Flynn coach our rookies will better experience how rewarding a career in the trades can be.

To ensure our coaches are prepared and supported, we will be providing Flynn University for Frontline Coaches (FUFC). FUFC is a two day course designed specifically for the coaches of our field teams. FUFC will provide the training they will need to effectively teach and mentor our rookies (more on pg. 51).

We will also be introducing the Coaching App, which is a custom Flynn app that can be easily downloaded. The app will be a direct link between coaches and rookies. It will allow rookies to track what they have learned, and what material they can cover in the future. On top of that the app provides a variety of support materials and best practice videos. All of these learning resources can help rookies review material they have already covered, get ahead of the curve and provide support when their coach is not available.

As our rookies use the app, all of their progress is tracked and is viewable right on their device. If they ever need to move to a new crew, they can take their progress with them. Finally the app allows rookies to give feedback on the quality of the support they are getting. This will allow us to improve the Program for both coaches and rookies as it gains traction.

The Coaching and Rookie Program is an ambitious undertaking, but if we succeed there will more opportunities for career growth throughout all of Flynn. This will be no easy task, but investing in our next generation will ensure a bright future.

Until next time, stay safe.

1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Mentorship Matters Nominations

In this issue we feature Ron Stoner, Kansas City Foreman and Chris Mann, Kansas City Project Manager, for Mentorship Matters. Read the full story on page 45.

“The guy I would like to nominate is Ron Stoner. He has worked for Flynn Kansas City for 20 plus years in the field. He is looked up to by so many in this company, he is a great foreman and great coach to all that work with him. He has always shown me what it takes to be a great person at work and away from work. The guy would give a stranger the shirt off his back.”

~ Dustin Borchert, Sheet Metal - Foreman

“I nominate Chris Mann. Chris and I started out together, him a little before me. We have worked together for 20 plus years and have gotten to be good friends. He was always concerned about the wellbeing of his men when he was a foreman, and even more so as a supervisor. I had an ok work ethic, but Chris made me better and brought the best out of me. And if you made a mistake no problem, he’s always “let’s just take care of it and go on”. Chris is very good man, the man would give the shirt off his back.”

~ Ron Stoner, Sheet Metal - Foreman

DENVER Colorado Christian UniversityAnschutz Student Center

The construction for the new Anschutz Student Center at the Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colorado is well on its way and ready to open in summer of 2017. This 55,000 sq. ft. space will be a great resource for students. It will feature a welcome center, elaborate dining area, outdoor fire pit, study hall, fitness center, amphitheater, and games room. Here, Denver is featuring their sloped roofing department. The project scope entails a 4” Poly ISO Atlas nail base with 5/8” fire treated plywood cover board, Carlisle WIP 300 high temperature ice and water shield, and features Boral Saxony Slate Escalante concrete tile. David Garza, the foreman on this project, has excelled and is making Flynn proud.

H-2B Program in Denver is Going Strong

This wonderful crew has been here since April and will return to their homes in Mexico before Thanksgiving. They have been a valuable addition to our summer labour force for about 17 years now!

The H-2B Program allows U.S. employers to legally bring foreign nationals to the United States to fill temporary non-agricultural jobs. Due to the construction worker shortage in general, it has been quite difficult to hire roofers in all of our U.S. locations, especially Denver. That is why we are proud to say that former D & D Roofing, Inc. was the first roofing company in the U.S. to successfully use this regulation. We always recruit workers from current employees who have friends and family who want to work here. This ensures that the H-2B workers will have a place to live for the approximately eight months that they are allowed in the United States. Overall it’s been a great success.

Union Denver Building

Submitted

Construction is well on its way in the popular Denver Union Station neighborhood. Union Denver is a high-rise structure in the downtown area, and it consists of three towers and four amenity roofs. This new construction project will be home to 600 residential units housed in an impressive 13-story towers. Flynn is working hard to put a roof over the heads of the Union Denver future residents and businesses. The scope of this project includes the installation of 725 Carlisle Vapor Barrier set in Cav-Grip on the entire concrete decks, followed by the installation of two layers of 2” ISO set in Carlisle Fast 100 Bag in a Box adhesive, layered with a detailed 12” taper system, with 5/8” DensDeck Primed cover board, and adhered Carlisle 60mil Sure White EPDM membrane.

*Missing: Rick Bright, Jose Eduardo Vargas Rodriguez, Milton Jones, Quincy Green, Chase Harvey and Kelly Sondergoth

Our production crews have been hard at work since June 2016 on two of the three towers and four amenity decks, each one taking about two months to complete. Flynn is completing all of the roofing scope, sheet metal, wall panels, and mechanical screens. Rick Bright (Head Project Foreman) and Irineo Garza (Project Foreman) plan to have the project completed by the end of February 2017.

Denver has always been a team with a festive Halloween spirit! This year, they came up with a clever idea to be a “spice rack”. As you can see, each team member was fully outfitted with a bra and a spice to make it all come together.

Stretch ‘N Flex

Submitted

Aches and pains are a common part of the roofing and sheet metal industry. Here in Denver, we have begun taking action to prevent common pains and strains by using the basic concepts of the Flynn “stretch ‘n bend” program. One of our sheet metal crews is demonstrating their spin on this program, known to them as the “stretch ‘n flex” program. Each morning, they take about ten minutes when they arrive on a jobsite to stretch their muscles and prepare for the hard day of work ahead. Of course, these tough sheet metal guys have to end their stretch program by “flexing” their muscles to boost morale and demonstrate that they are ready for any challenges.

Meet the Flynn Operational Excellence Team

Within the past few years Flynn has experienced significant growth, and as we have grown, we have added new branches that range in both scope and geography. All of our branches have developed their own best practices, which has created a large untapped collective knowledge across Flynn. In order to share these best practices we created the Flynn Operational Excellence Team (OPEX).

“OPEX is an internal group that was put together to identify and implement best practices across all of our scopes, while at the same time look for continuous improvement,” said John McManus, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Sponsor of OPEX. “We quickly found that if the team was going to elicit real change, they had to own it. This is why OPEX has a dedicated team. These are people who don’t only focus on best practices when there is a hole in their schedule.”

The head of OPEX is Paul Manchisi, Vice President of Operations. Paul has an overall vision of the company, is experienced with various regions, and has the ability to push and pull information throughout all of Flynn. Michael Petch, Roofing Operations Support Specialist and Gord Wiggins, Architectural Operations Support Specialist, are subject matter experts that work on the office side of OPEX, while also visiting branches and jobsites. While their counterparts, Frank Kraus, Roofing Technical Training Specialist and Rick Lacey, Architectural Technical Training Specialist are subject matter experts in the field who help with projects and provide training.

Implementing best practices is just one facet of OPEX. Their unique position and team composition allows them to also share information and resources throughout Flynn. Information sharing can include providing training to Flynn crews.

“When we first acquired the Flagstaff branch, most of the team had done very little single-ply roofing at all. So we sent Frank to provide some training, and he worked with that crew for two weeks to upgrade their skills. When the Roofing Systems Manufacturer next came up, he was stunned by the quality of their recent install,” said Michael Petch. “This is just one example of the support we can provide to all of Flynn. OPEX was able to increase the productivity, efficiency and the potential of the Flagstaff branch with just a two week investment.”

On top of that OPEX is actively contributing to the digital future of Flynn by providing support for app development. The Daily Production Report App will give Foreman access to local weather reports, technical drawings, time cards, and help eliminate paperwork. The Coaching App will help train our new rookies by pairing them with an onsite coach (See page 51 for more details).

If you are interested in learning more about the OPEX team, or seeing what they can do for your branch, reach out to Paul Manchisi at 1.905.671.3971 x 1247 or at Paul.Manchisi@Flynncompanies.com.

MINNEAPOLIS Ameriprise Financial Waterwall

Submitted by Jesse Wilcox

Flynn Midwest partnered with American Masonry, US Mechanical, and Forever Lawn MN to complete a waterproofing restoration at the Ameriprise water wall feature in downtown Minneapolis. Maintaining a safe construction site adjacent to two main entrances and a busy 3rd Avenue was a top priority to the owner. The compressed construction schedule was also a factor. Artificial turf adjacent to the feature was removed, allowing more access for the crews.

Flynn Midwest demoed the existing mortar bed and prepared the concrete for waterproofing. New plaza drains were installed as part of the project. Finally, new brackets and the mortar bed were provided as part of the stone installation, and the artificial turf was reset.

Flynn Participates in Construct Tomorrow

Submitted by Lorna Mendez

Flynn recently attended Construct Tomorrow, a program designed to promote trade skills as a career choice for students entering the workforce. There was a lot of interest at our booth and hopefully we helped introduce a generation to a great field of work.

MINNEAPOLIS Cedar Grove Transit Station

Submitted by Ryan Tollefson

Construction on Cedar Grove Transit began in November 2016 by installing aluminum plate panels. Safety is critical with this Department of Transportation project. A portion of the skyway is over the freeway, just south of the Minneapolis metro area. The contractor provided cones as the primary method of traffic control, but the crew wanted an extra precaution. Therefore, a “Safety Signs” truck was provided by Flynn as a secondary method of crash prevention.

SPRINGFIELD

Reed Springs Middle School

Submitted by Steve Tatum

The crew has really done an outstanding job of maintaining a safe environment on a challenging project, while also meeting schedules and deadlines. There was limited access due to an underground gymnasium, so the team used the crane to set the framing and glazing for the 248foot long skylight. The scope also included curtain walls, storefronts, project-out windows, interior swing entrances, and heavy glass laminated guardrails.

Ozark Junior High

Submitted by Rebecca Welsh

Ozark Junior High School has been undergoing a major renovation. Flynn picked up multiple scopes, including glazing, and began working on the roof in July. This project includes a storm shelter addition to an existing structure. Phase One included a re-roof and partial tie-ins, which posed design and construction challenges. The overall project roof and metal scopes include Firestone EPDM roofing system, sheet metal,

panels and Fundermax panels over a Knight Wall framing system.

REMEMBERING KIM ROYALTY

Kim Royalty, Flagstaff shop manager and beloved member of our crew unexpectedly passed away November 8, 2016. An avid outdoorsman, he spent his life enjoying hunting, camping and fishing.

Most of all, he loved being with his wife Lisa of 43 years, his two beautiful daughters and his grandchildren. Kim will be greatly missed. We are all saddened by the loss of our friend and valued member of our team.

Cerner Three Trails

It’s a stunning structure, bearing a similar aesthetic as the Continuous Campus Flynn completed in 2014. The buildings are wrapped in 168,200 sq. ft. of stainless steel and 30,000 sq. ft. of ACM panels.

Cerner Corporation has been a long-time client of Flynn Kansas City. Cerner’s third and largest campus project in Kansas City is their Three Trails Campus. Once completed, the campus will include ten towers and six additional buildings totaling 4.7 Million sq. ft. to be completed over the next ten years. Flynn won the total building envelope from Construction Manager J.E. Dunn Construction for the initial phases which consist of one 12-story tower with a 5-story annex, one 9-story tower, a 5-story Connector linking the two towers, two gate houses, and three campus signs.

Flynn mobilized on the jobsite in October 2015 and expects to be completed March 2017. A major benefit of Flynn securing the total building envelope is the internal coordination and planning of the project, as well as the different crews having a working familiarity with one another. For this job specifically, Glaziers Local #558 and Sheet Metal Workers Local #2 signed a Composite Crew Agreement, allowing crew members to work across both scopes. The field crews have done an incredible job without any major injuries, or overtime since August. Roofing crew is led by Superintendent Mike Mauck and Foreman Jesse Sells. The Metal crew is led by Superintendent Blaine Williams and Foremen Jack Ketterman and Jacob Gately. Glazing crew is led by Superintendent Mark Webb and Foremen Chad Vermillion and Jonathan Folsom.

As it nears completion, it’s a stunning structure bearing a similar aesthetic as the Continuous Campus Flynn completed in 2014. The buildings are wrapped in 168,200 sq. ft. of stainless steel and 30,000 sq. ft. of ACM panels. The five types of stainless is made up of two different naturally textured metal and four LIC textured metal. About 200,000 sq. ft. of colored flat sheet for brake metal was ordered. Procuring materials for the campus project was a meticulous task, especially working with a German supplier.

11 COVER STORY

Along with more than 140,000 sq. ft. of exterior curtainwall, Flynn also had much of the interior glazing scope which included 3,200 sq. ft. of back-painted glass, 5,000 sq. ft. of starphire mirrors, 2,000 sq. ft. of handrail laminated glass, and 11,000 sq. ft. of clear tempered.

The total roof area of the buildings is just under 149,000 sq. ft. with three roofing and/or waterproofing systems. The first roof system is 98,700 sq. ft. and consists of Siplast Parabase FS venting base sheet attached to lightweight insulating concrete. Over the Parabase FS is 1-ply of Siplast Paradiene 20 base ply sheet installed in Type IV asphalt and then 1-ply of Siplast Paradiene 30 FR SBS finish ply (bone white granular surface) installed in Siplast PA-311 cold process adhesive.

The second roof system is 38,950 sq. ft. and is made up of mechanically attached 5/8” DensDeck prime roof board with R-30 flat sheet and tapered polyisocyanurate insulation and ½” high density wood fiber board all installed in Type IV asphalt. The Paradiene 20 and Paradiene 30 FR were next installed as above.

The third system is 11,146 sq. ft. and a Siplast Teranap waterproofing system. After priming the concrete decks, the waterproofing system consists of 1-ply of Paradiene 20 TG modified bitumen membrane and 1-ply of Teranap 1M sand membrane, both installed by heat welding. Additionally, the waterproofing areas have concrete pavers on pedestals and vegetative systems.

Like the other Cerner Campuses Flynn has done, this project is a design-assist. Drafting Manager Cory Brown and his team began working closely with architect firm Gould Evans in February 2015. In order to stay in budget, Flynn assisted Gould Evans in re-designing the façade, changing the exterior look and pleasing both Owner and General Contractor. Comprising Cory’s team is Greg Ballew, Andy Rhoades, Josh Douthitt, Sharanda Whittaker, Dave Case, and David Eyde.

Also in the office, spending the majority of the last two years on this job, are: Nick Markley (Glass PM), Joe Pretz (Roofing PM), Chris Mann (Metal PM), Larry Skidmore (Special Projects), Ann Trave (Sr. Glass Estimator), Dave McAnerney (Sr. Metal Estimator), and supervised by Vern Keeth (Glazing Operations Manager), Kevin Harris (Sheet Metal Operations Manager), and Mike Pierce (Roofing Operations Manager).

KANSAS CITY

Independence Utility –Adding Fins

Submitted

The Independence Power & Light purchased the existing MCI Hospital in Independence, Missouri and decided it needed a makeover. The project involved 700 sq. ft. of custom perforated aluminum fins along the exterior of the buildings. The perforated material was ordered out-of-house, punched, and sheared to size. The shop fabrication picked up from there, bending the fins to shape and then welding them to continuous aluminum angles. The design team chose a unique color called “Copper Mountain”. These fins were painted locally post Kynar in Kansas City.

Look at the final product and we can all agree that the fins provide a great aesthetic feature to the building.

Fishtech Labs

Submitted by Mike Carter

This was an especially important project due to the relationship Flynn has with General Contractor A.L. Huber and owner Fishtech Labs. Flynn was awarded with the total building envelope. The glazing scope included storefronts, aluminum entrances with electrified activation, folding glass walls, sliding glass walls, pivot door, and electrified privacy glass.

Bethany House Apartments

Submitted by Nicole Ewing

The Bethany House Apartments is a retirement home and required extra coordination to limit the impact on the residence. Increased safety signage, overhead protection, and barriers were utilized to ensure the protection of the residence. The project was completed during a heat wave which made the installation more challenging.

The scope of this job involved the removal of existing roof and rooftop equipment, installation of new roofing Garland 3-ply cold applied modified built-up roof system with adhered roof gravel, installation of fall protection window wash anchor system consisting of 63 roof anchors and cable system, restoration of masonry brick, and installation of new Durawalk urethane liquid rubber membrane on the seventh floor patio.

This submission is in memory of Jim Robinson, Construction Manager with JLR Construction. Jim was a pleasure to work with on this project. He connected with our Flynn team and helped make this a successful project. Jim passed away unexpectedly prior to its completion.

HAMILTON SEARS ROOFINGJOB WELL DONE

As the Roofing Consultant for Sears Canada, I recently tendered a re-roofing project for the Sears facility at the Penn Centre in St Catherines. Your company was selected to execute this difficult project. As with all re-roofing projects there are problems and issues that must be dealt with in order to deliver a satisfactory product to the customer. The Project Supervisor, Mr. Craig Van de Merwe and the roofing foreman Mr. Rick Fernandez were in charge of this project and all issues were dealt with quickly in a professional manner. As problems were encountered during the duration of the project they were resolved quickly and with a minimum of discussion. These two individuals are to be commended for the professional manner in which they delivered this re-roofing project.

Joseph Brant Hospital New Tower

The Toronto crew has been working on recladding the Joseph Brant Hospital New Tower since May 2016, and it is expected to finish by spring 2017. The scope of the project includes approximately 90,000 sq. ft. of aluminum panels, 300 sq. ft. of stainless steel panels, 2,100 sq. ft. of siding and 4,600 sq. ft. of Phenolic panels. Working with the architect and ownership during the design and tendering process meant the estimating team had to help find products and systems. This meant meeting strict design criteria and specifications, while helping keep costs down for the project. Plus being a public building with a brand new tower with a post disaster facility designation, meant selecting high quality products. This combination of requirements were a tall order, but progress is moving smoothly and the client is happy with the work done by the Flynn team.

Flynn Teams up with I’m Lawrence

The “I’m Lawrence” program encourages underprivileged youth to get involved in the trades. Flynn participated in the program by inviting youths in the program to our shop in Toronto to learn about the field of construction. We were happy to provide tools, materials and coaching in the task of building three metal sheds. These lessons taught the team how to work with sheet metal earning them valuable experience. The sheds were then presented to community centres to be used as green houses.

Bay Adelaide East & Deloitte Fit Out

Submitted

Our Toronto team recently finished a year-long project which involved stainless steel panels. The first part of the project was completed in between Adelaide St. and Temperance St., where the crew installed 3mm thick stainless column/wall panels along the perimeter of the podium and stainless steel wall panels in the parking garage ramp. In addition, the team installed a custom-made stainless steel grille soffit along with custom-made structural supports on the North/East elevations along Temperance Street. The indoors scope of the project involved 3mm & 1.5mm thick stainless steel along the perimeter of the main floor up to the 6th floor. The main challenge was the weight of the stainless steel panels; our guys got a daily workout lifting these panels and sometimes required two zoom-booms to install a single panel. The London team was given the task of installing a new roof on the canopy, and the job proved to be a little tricky. Our set up was confined to a canopy roof. The team had to put all of our material on the roof, because we could not use a hoist and the front entrance to the mall was too close. We could only use our regular safety rail system for the outer parapet, due to tight spaces. Our guys constructed an inner rail system to ensure we worked safely. Also there was a time rush because the stucco tradesmen had to get started three days into the new roof. But the weather treated us nicely, and the team got it done.

Flynn Crew Responds Rapidly to Tornado Damage

Submitted by Paul Nunes

Environment Canada reported that a tornado touched down in Windsor, Ontario early this fall. The London branch of the Flynn Group of Companies received a call on their emergency line at 9:20 PM that night. Service Superintendent Jason McKay immediately sent out a Flynn crew, and they were on site by 10:50 PM. When they arrived they found that the roof on a bank had been ripped apart due to the high winds.

Before proceeding with any repairs, the team ensured the area was safe. Once the area was secure, they stopped any water from draining into the bank and began sealing a temporary roof. The Flynn team worked all throughout the night to ensure that the bank was able to open on time the next morning without losing any hours. Truly amazing work team, you are a great example of the high standard that we hold throughout all of Flynn.

Doubling Production in Flynn Manufacturing

Submitted by Jutharsan Paransothy

Flynn Manufacturing doubled up on our mullion left hand and right hands, which resulted in doubling our production. Every hole that is drilled or milled is now going through both profiles other than our anchor slots. Typically, we would punch our anchor slots before, due to the intense vibration with having only one mullion. But with our new design, we put in two mullions because this gives us the rigidness we need to complete all operations on CNC with only one operator.

Innovation and new ideas is a constant on the shop floor in the Flynn Manufacturing Plant at the Toronto branch.

DON FLYNN PIONEER SAFETY AWARDS 2016

London, Ontario Celebrates Winning the Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award

On September 30th the London, Ontario branch celebrated their much earned Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award. The Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award recognizes the branch that has achieved the highest performance in standards of health and safety. The celebration started with some music, drinks and a BBQ, which was thankfully not ruined by the rain. Everyone took the time to chat and even visit the photo booth for some fun. Afterwards Doug Flynn congratulated the London team for their hard work, and presented them with the trophy.

“The competition for this award just keeps getting tougher and tougher. It definitely takes a team effort – everyone in the branch has to be on board. Safety will always be our number one priority at Flynn, nothing matters more than everyone going home at the end of the day,” said Doug Flynn, President and CEO of Flynn Group of Companies. “We certainly have some seasoned and conscientious people in our London operation, and I had a blast celebrating with them. Congratulations to London for setting the bar for all of Flynn.”

33

After the celebration, the team was taken to a hockey game to watch the London Knights face off against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Our London crew hung out in the private lounge enjoying some more food while they waited for the game to begin, and then it was off to cheer for their home team. While the Knights lost that night, it was still a close game and exciting to watch.

“I was very happy to see my team recognized for their tireless effort and attention to safety. To put a day aside with the purpose of celebrating the safest branch, really demonstrates the importance Flynn puts in safety,” said Stephen Patti, Branch Manager. “The entire crew had a great time at the celebration, and we plan to keep our efforts up, so we can keep the trophy next year.”

JOE OSINSKI RETIRING FROM FLYNN

After 22 years of working with Flynn, Joe Osinski, our Vice President of Legal is ready to move into retirement. Joe has been an important part of our team for many years, but the decision to retire is something we all must face someday, the choice to let the next generation take a shot at filling your shoes. But let me tell you, Joe’s shoes will not be easy to fill, for 22 years he has been a close advisor for many in the organization and has demonstrated a unique blend of caution and entrepreneurial spirit.

Back in 2009 our sales and employees were about half of what they are today. A few of us at the senior leadership level decided that Flynn would need internal legal advice at a senior level if we were to continue to grow and mature as a company. But finding someone with a legal background, who was also a cultural fit would be a difficult task. I’ve met my fair share of lawyers, and would venture to say that most of them would not meet the criteria that comes with being a cultural fit. But Joe was different, he had already been involved with Flynn as our external legal counsel since 1994. So we made an offer, and after much consideration, and to our delight, Joe told us he was in!

Now your average lawyer will always want to tell you why you shouldn’t do something. Lawyers tend to be focused on the risk of things, which is after all what we pay them for!

Joe is different, he does not shy away from risk, and in fact embraces ways to pro-actively mitigate risk. He has a strong entrepreneurial streak in him, and that is the right mindset when you are looking to grow a company. On top of that, Joe constantly demonstrated the values that are part of “The Flynn Way”, our culture. Maybe being from the Prairies (where Flynn started) helped, not sure, but it was clear he was a fit, always demonstrating a low dose of ego and a high dose of teamwork and collaboration. Soon, with the help of Joe, we were expanding the business, and we have never looked back. Joe has been an important member of the Board of Directors of the company for a number of years, and as we move forward, it is right to take the time to acknowledge those who have helped make Flynn what it is today. Our team will always be evolving as we grow, in an effort to ensure our great culture is protected, and even built upon! Joe always understood the importance of having a great culture, and although we wish Joe and his wife Judy all the best in retirement, we will miss him.

Best of luck Joe, I hope you enjoy yourself in whatever you do. You helped Flynn grow into a mature, industry leading company, and for all of your efforts over the years, we are all grateful.

All the best!

T.A.S.K. WINNER

Congratulations to T.A.S.K. Winner Rob Albert

The Flynn T.A.S.K. Program (Team Attitude Sharing Knowledge) was created to promote the communication of good ideas within the company, from one office to another. Rob Albert has introduced a tool that makes connecting kettle pipes a much easier task. From his previous experience as a Derrickhand in the oilfield, he was responsible for connecting and disconnecting long pieces of pipe for down-hole operations. This gave him the idea to use a Hammer Union. Once installed onto the kettle pipe, the length of pipe is raised to the roof and easily attached to the kettle. The entire process can bring a task that can normally take 20 minutes to an hour (depending on how old the pipe is) down to around five minutes.

More information on this T.A.S.K and others can be found on Flynn Crew. To submit your own T.A.S.K. idea, visit the Flynn Crew, Portal, or contact Chris.Haddlesey@Flynncompanies.com

REGINA Loblaw Distribution Centre

Submitted by Blaine Braun

This year’s scope of work was to remove 120,000 sq. ft. of the existing roof system to the steel deck, install V-Force VB direct to deck, mechanically fasten 2 layers of 3.5” polyiso, and fully adhere TPO. Gary Morriseau and crew battled the weather for three seasons, plus the wind in this location is always a challenge. They had to remove ice from the interior, while protecting the warehouse below from falling ice/debris through the grated floor. One penthouse was at -5C (23F) and another at -29C (-20F). Additionally, the refrigeration units had to be shut down for four hours while this went on, and freezer temperatures were being continually monitored by the Loblaw’s staff.

Throughout all of their challenges, the crew pushed hard and came together to complete another successful project. Congrats to Gary and crew!

When the EMT’s arrived, they told Nate that if he had not started doing CPR that the gentleman would have died.

Both Sarah and Nate acted heroically, and have been recognized with the Flynn Lifesaver Award. Great work you two, you are both an inspiration.

WHY LEARN CPR?

Cardiac arrest – an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organsis a leading cause of death.

When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby.

According to the American Heart Association, about 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.

MENTORSHIP MATTERS MATTERS

A Profile on Ron Stoner and Chris Mann

A Profile on Flynn Mentors

For Mentorship Matters we called on you to nominate your mentor in the field. We found that many of the nominations we received described their mentor as a coach. This is appropriate since coaching and mentoring are very similar, coaching just focuses more on skill transfer. Choosing from so many deserving mentors was difficult, but there were two that stood out, and they were both from the Kansas City branch. Dustin Borchert, Sheet Metal Foreman nominated Ron Stoner, Sheet Metal Foreman, and Ron nominated Chris Mann, Project Manager. The clear connection between these nominations offered an opportunity to sit all three down and discuss their thoughts on what makes a great coach and the positive impact a coach can have.

Chris Mann

My greatest coach was my Dad, he instilled in me the fundamental belief that everyone has value, and sometimes it’s our responsibility to find that value. So when new guys make a mistake, I remember this, plus I know I made a lot of mistakes when I was younger. It would have been easy to just get rid of me, but that’s not seeing the big picture. Someone along the line saw the potential in me, and I try to have the same outlook when it comes to our rookies. We need to remember that we were all rookies at some point.

That said, you still have to tell someone when they screw up. Personally I believe honesty is the best policy when someone’s work isn’t good enough. I mean you can give the truth in different ways, depending on who the people are. But just telling someone their work is crap isn’t going to help them. You have to have that conversation with them, like it or not. If the person is worth your time they will understand you are trying to help. I know Bob patiently worked through my own rough approach when I started in the office, and he helped me get over the peak and become a better project manager. Really, there are just so many mentors in our lives, you never stop learning.

You don’t just learn from your coaches, you learn from the guys around you too. Never overlook people because you don’t agree with them. I’ve had tons of disagreements with Ronnie and Dustin, you just have to remember you don’t know everything. Many times I have been told flat out there is a better way. You earn a lot of respect from each other when your people are willing to be up front. It’s one of the reasons I’ve seen so much development from both Ronnie and Dustin, we learn from each other. I know for a fact it’s one of the reasons I’ve become a better person.

45

Ron Stoner

Chris always took good care of me and he believed in me when I was a bit wilder. I used to come in a bit late every now and then. Sure, he beat me up a little bit for being late, but never too far. People are going to disappoint you, but you don’t really solve it by just beating them up. This stuff happens, you can work through it. The fact that Chris gave me a chance despite my screw ups made me want to try harder to make up for my shortcomings.

Chris surrounds himself with people that are like minded, good people. He knows you need to treat people right, instead of being a boss, you need to be a leader. As a leader you need to be approachable. You don’t make people do stuff that is unsafe or dangerous. Plus you shouldn’t keep giving one guy all the crappy stuff. You have to take good care of people, and treat them how you want to be treated.

While I’ve learned a lot working with Chris, I’ve also learned a lot from Dustin too. I’ve been doing this job for so long, that I take for granted how to do a task sometimes, and give instructions too quickly. I say it all, and only later realize some of my crew didn’t understand a thing I said. Dustin pointed this out, he helped me understand how my crew see things.

Really when it comes to coaching, you want to be like that person who taught you. Chris is a good guy, Dustin is a good guy. Both have been important in my life, I know I could turn to either one and they would have my back.

I’ve worked here a long time, with a lot of guys who were yellers and screamers, and I hated it. So I told myself when I got this role, I was going to try and understand people, and not yell and scream. I know yelling never worked on me. You would get more work out of me with a little encouragement. You need to have patience, you are their coach and your job is to help grow your people. A lot of these guys have never been in construction, you are building them up to who you want them to be. Anyone can do it with the right support. Just give them the training they need, while boosting their confidence, and they are good to go.

I know I wouldn’t be here without Ronnie and Chris, they are good coaches and that’s why I work better with them. They both showed me how to do things the right way. It’s why I want the guys under me to have the same support I do. When you see the new guys you helped make it, you feel good because you helped them get there.

“Ron and Chris are both “make it happen” type of guys and mentor their teams to work effectively and efficiently in the same direction. Ronnie has come a long ways over the last 24 years and has become our “go to” foreman for large panel projects. Ronnie has been in Iowa running the Facebook project for the last three plus years per the direct request of Turner Construction’s Superintendent. Most importantly Ronnie has the respect of our team and our client.

Chris was our Field Superintendent for several years, then he moved into project management about 10 years ago and now manages our largest metal panel projects. Chris has been our Metal Project Manager on all the recent Cerner Projects and Facebook projects. He has the respect of our team, it’s not uncommon to see Chris “mentoring” other PM’s on system details and site logistics.”

“We need people in all stages of development in order to continue growth, quality, and a sustainable workforce. The continued development of Chris Mann and Ron Stoner has deep roots that go back more than twenty years and still affects newer people today. That Dustin Borchert nominated Ron, and Ron nominated Chris, says volumes to this fact. To have both Ron and Chris be selected for this month’s Mentorship Matters is a special thing. Here, we have three people separated by just a few years learning from one another. All men came from the trials and tribulations of starting as a field apprentice; and now Dustin a Field Foreman, Ron a General Foreman, and Chris from Superintendent to Project Management! Here we can see the progression of how much mentoring really does matter. Congratulations to all for this selection and commendation.”

CNRL Plant 49 Major Project Downstream

Submitted by Ian

This is a job for Waiward Steel for the CNRL Horizon Site in northern Alberta. The plan was just to install client supplied architectural materials (wall cladding, mandoors and louvers) for the Reformer Penthouse building. The job evolved to encompass the Plant 49 Major Project Downstream (wall and roof cladding, pedestrian doors, and canopies) for the H2, CO2, PSA and Deluge buildings. During the work on Plant 49, Waiward Steel also awarded Flynn Industrial with the installation of the HVAC scope on the three buildings (H2, CO2, and PSA) along with multiple other scopes like patching and sealing of penetrations for multiple buildings within the Waiward scope for CNRL. The crew pictured is working to finish the project off. At one point, the job peaked at 18 crew members, plus a superintendent and foreman.

Legacy Project

Submitted by James Sheehan

Flynn Industrial is nearing completion on the K+S Legacy Project. Our installation crews commenced on site in January 2015, and are scheduled to have our contract scope complete in early 2017. The project includes the installation of approximately 403,000 sq. ft. of 3” thick Kingspan PIR panel, 106,000 sq. ft. of 4” thick Kingspan MF (fire rated) panel, 56,000 sq. ft. of single skin Vicwest cladding, 11,000 sq. ft. of Vicwest TSR metal roofing, 300 man doors, 24 overhead roller doors and the installation and commissioning of owner supplied Ruskin louvres.

Under the watchful eye of Brad Chapman, Phil Bonneteau, Cyril Murphy and Kevin Lentz our crews managed to safely overcome many challenges throughout this project (night shift, winter storms, summer storms, extreme on-site congestion etc.) while maintaining the required levels of quality and finishing.

Congratulations to all involved so far, here’s to finishing safely and exceeding client expectations!

EDMONTON WSP Re-Imagine Project

Submitted by Connie Applin

This project is a revitalization of a circa 1970’s 13 story building. Flynn was asked to be part of the design team to assist with material selection and design details for the entire building envelope. Throughout the three month process working with the construction manager and architect and owner, Flynn provided design assistance and budget pricing for curtainwall, architectural panels, and roofing assemblies. Flynn also was contracted to design and supply a floor hoarding solution utilizing insulated metal panels that spanned from floor to ceiling on each floor allowing for the occupied spaces to be functioning during envelope construction.

Demolition and new construction started in January 2016 with an anticipation of full completion by spring of 2017. Challenges on the project included dealing with unknown existing conditions until the precast panels were removed, post tension slab anchoring, and working on an occupied building. There was also a tight turnover of the upper floors before working on lower floors –effectively building from the top down.

The project team made up of Ehab Al Kaka, Bob Stadnyk, and Bill Rennich have been working together on the project coordinating details, site installation, equipment access, and sub trades on site to execute the project. Stay tuned for completion pictures in spring of 2017.

Flynn University – Calling On All Coaches!

Many of us were lucky enough to have a coach/mentor earlier in our career who helped show us the ropes. Good coaching leaves a positive lasting impression, and can help you on the path of your future career. At Flynn we recognize the importance of this positive coaching experience, and we want all of our rookies to have it. If you are an experienced field worker, and you believe in the positive impact coaching can have, we want you to sign up for Flynn University for Frontline Coaches (FUFC). We are starting the FUFC program with Roofing Production, and these are the coaches we would like to sign up first.

FUFC aims to give all Flynn Roofing Production rookies a coach who will share their knowledge and experience, while helping guide them through their first few months. By becoming a coach you will be showing a new generation how rewarding a career in roofing can be. While at the same time building your legacy at Flynn.

The FUFC course itself will support and train members of our Roofing Production team who want to be Flynn coaches. Though we are starting with Roofing Production, we will expand the program to other scopes in the future. FUFC is a two day coaching program designed specifically for the leaders (and future leaders) of our field teams. FUFC covers topics that will provide our coaches with the tools they need to better help their rookies. Some of the topics included will be:

• Why do we need a Coaching Program?

• Understanding adult learning as a coach

• The role of coaches and rookies

• What makes a successful coach

• Coaching impact on workplace culture

Coaches will also be given training on the Coaching App, a new piece of Flynn tech which is fun and easy to use. The app works as a direct line between coaches and rookies, and will provide a variety of resources such as best practice videos and support materials. On top of that, it’s an easy way to track the progress of your rookies. It is also how the rookie’s progress will not be lost when moving from crew to crew.

The mission of Flynn University has always been the development of current and future leaders of Flynn. There is no better way to show leadership than becoming a coach and shaping the next generation of leaders.

We hope to see you at Flynn University for Frontline Coaches. If you are interested in Roofing Production and attending, please contact Latoya Francis at 1.905.671.3971 x 1146 or sign up at FlynnCrew.com

I am positive and optimistic that I can make a difference as a coach.

ATCO Commercial Centre

The Calgary and Mid-West glazing team is currently working on the ATCO Commercial Centre with General Contractor Cana Construction. The multi-scope project is a huge undertaking. The Architectural Metals scope involves 20,400 sq. ft. of aluminum roofing, 24,050 of panels, and 16,450 of pre-manufactured aluminum soffit. A challenge the team has been facing is installing liner panel as a vapour barrier in soffit areas. This can be difficult because of multiple elevation changes and the curves on the common building. The glazing scope involves 48,500 sq. ft. of Kawneer system 1 UT stick built curtain wall and Kawneer clear wall system, three large skylights with custom fritted sealed units. Large glass interior atrium walls.

The challenges were multiple radii’s of the framing, sloping “nose” frames with compound miters and 8 to 12 inch dep custom I beam caps. The roofing scope of the project consists of 56,400 sq. ft. of SBS roofing and 86,000 sq. ft. of waterproofing. With a multi-scope job of such size, planning and execution was a major factor in ensuring that this project ran successfully. The Foreman on site Tom Adamson, Sam Johnson and Paul Jones along with their crews, worked tirelessly and effectively to ensure schedules and deadlines where kept. On top of that they ensured that safety and quality where upheld.

We were recently contacted by ABK Restoration Services to do some repair work on a home owned by Mark Shalagan. Insurance work can be challenging as there are numerous parties involved and often considerable stress on the homeowner when they experience unexpected damage to their home. It was with great pleasure that our Service Superintendent, Chris Sitter, received an email from Mr. Shalagan directly. In his email he writes:

“I don’t normally take time out to follow-up after a service, but it is not often a service like this is performed to this level. The extent of the work carried out, as well as the professionalism was absolutely outstanding... This Tremco re-sat roof habilitation project is led by Service Foreman JJ Boudreault. All work was carried out in the summer when the school was enjoying summer vacation, however an on-site day care was in full operation during their work.

The roof on this middle school has been leaking in various places on and off since the school was built in 1992. The school district has spent $380,000 over the past 24 years in an attempt to stop the leaks. Public pressure has mounted over the years and the province of British Columbia announced early in 2016 that they would release the funding required to replace the roof and perform much needed upgrades. This high profile project is in good hands with Mark O’Hanley, his crew, and office support staff. A special thanks to Derek Mathews, our Project Coordinator, for his tireless and endless meetings, coordination, and organization behind the scenes and on site.

VANCOUVER

Hamilton Transit Centre

Our crew in Vancouver is working alongside Bird Construction on the Hamilton Transit Centre. Working with Bird Construction, the Vancouver Metals crew completed a 7-building bus servicing hub that is now aiding public transit. The scope of work included Flynn Accumet 2000 ACM Panels, Flynn Snap Lock II Metal Roofing, and other various cladding profiles. The project came within budget, which of course, satisfied our customer. A great thanks to Brian Taylor and crew.

Royal Inland Hospital –

Four Hours to Spare

Special thanks to Kevin Timms and his crew for the amazing performance on the successful completion of the Royal Inland Hospital. Closing the project within budget, with 4 hours left to spare and zero deficiencies. This was no easy task, as the project was out of town, severely behind schedule and involved custom panel screens never done before.

It is also worth mentioning that this was Kevin’s first project in a leadership role. Proud to have him as part of Flynn and looking forward to his future contributions for years to come.

Cambie Fire Hall No.

3

Submitted by Denise Francisco

Vancouver crew recently completed their work on Cambie Fire Hall No. 3. The scope of this project consisted of metals, glazing and roofing. The project required long strips of fibre cement panels (as shown in picture with the crew) and the effort of making sure the panels lined up appropriately with windows and doors required the use of a survey machine and AutoCAD software. The strips couldn’t be too small or too big, they needed to be perfect. This can be difficult at times, but well worth the final product. It should be noted that the picture included is only the panel crew, all scopes will be included in the next issue of the Flash when they are done.

Flynn Manufacturing Safety Award 2016

Flynn places a great emphasis on safety, not only in the office and field, but also in our manufacturing facilities as well. Therefore, each year Flynn celebrates safety excellence with the Manufacturing Safety Award. The award is eligible to all manufacturing facilities across Flynn (Canada and the United States). This year the Vancouver plant won the award, making it the winner for both 2015 and 2016!
