president’s message Connecting with YOU! At the time of writing this message, I have attended just over half of the various Branch Safety Meetings that we have scheduled this year, and have very much enjoyed having the opportunity to communicate with all of you.

As discussed at each meeting, in an effort to improve communication between the office and the field, I am pleased to report that we are very close to launching our website developed exclusively for employees, which will be referred to as our “Extranet” (you will all receive instruction on how to access the Extranet at time of launch).

During our rounds of Safety Meetings in 2010, you told us that “Communication” was an area that needed improvement – specifically communication between office and field personnel. The development of this Extranet is a direct result of your suggestions at our Branch Safety Meetings.

This website will be accessible to all employees and their families and will contain things such as: Company news and updates, the Flynn Flash newsletters, information on our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and benefit programs, job postings in all branches, media articles, links to suppliers websites for technical information, all of our safety information, information on our scholarship and children’s sports team sponsorship programs, information on safety awards and years of service awards, some project highlights, and much more. There will even be a Foremen section, which will contain information that our Foremen require from time to time.

Through the Extranet, you will also have the opportunity to provide feedback, suggestions and ideas for improvement directly to John McManus and myself.

I fully expect that the Extranet will evolve over time, based on suggestions from you along the way. When this is launched, I encourage you all to visit this site often and become involved. The main reason for developing this communication tool is to bridge the gap that sometimes exists between field and office.

This Extranet is for you, and we look forward to hearing what you think about it!

EDMUNDSTON POLICE SERVICES SET TO MOVE TO MODERN FACILITY Halifax Branch Metals Division is nearing completion on a new police station for the City of Edmundston with general contractor Maxim Construction.

The complex replaces the existing facility and provides a modern, new precinct and office complex. Composite wood panels as well as fibreglass reinforced panels were installed by Flynn crews.

CREWS BEGIN TO GEAR UP FOR THE ROCK’S NEXT MEGA PROJECT! The expertise of the St. John’s Branch roofing department has been called upon by general contractor N.D. Dobbin to tie together PVC roofing on the camp buildings for this mega mine site project.

As part of Vale Inco’s Long Harbour nickel project, the workers accommodation buildings were brought in from Norway in pre-fabricated modules. 1500 of them!

Flynn Industrial has quite a bit of work at this megaproject, so stay tuned for more updates in the next Flash.

AN ORIGINAL CAMPUS BUILDING GETS A NEW ROOF Flynn, St. John’s Branch, has been able to maintain crews on the Memorial University campus by doing their contracts well and continuing to be successful at obtaining work. The latest project undertaken is the 6,000 square foot re-roof of Burke House, one of the original residence buildings on campus.

Ken Petersen and his crew have successfully removed two existing roofs and replaced them with a new 2-ply modified bitumen system to date.

service crew did a great job on this ESSO site in St. John’s.

Although not large roofs in square footage, these sites can be tricky with their high traffic volumes and small site areas making safety a vital part of the project. With little room for equipment and materials, the crew re-flashed all roof perimeters and projections in hot asphalt while the facility was still open and operational.

JUST GIT ’R DONE FOR SLEMON PARK Moncton Branch was awarded a 21,600 square foot hot-applied reroof that needed to be completed promptly for the Slemon Park Corporation in Summerside, PEI. In order to fulfill the intended schedule, two production crews were combined and they worked very well together.

The owner, who had never worked with Flynn in the past, was very impressed with our safety attitude and quality of application.

Special thanks to all who worked on making this project a great success, which will lead to many more projects with this owner.

SOME JOBS ARE JUST THAT BAD! OTHERS ARE JUST PLAIN AWFUL!

Dirty, small, tight, intricate and difficult are all words that come to mind when describing the CIBC project in Saint John, New Brunswick. This project had everything from old leaking masonry walls to a pitched roof, probably older than everyone in the photo combined, and everything in between.

The site is located right in the heart of downtown Saint John on the corner of two busy streets. The building is connected to other buildings on two sides making it challenging for the crew to load and dispose of materials.

Capping off all of that was the fact that everything went up or came down from the roof and it had to be done by moonlight. The job was started in the late fall and had to be put on hold for the winter with the crew returning this spring to complete the transition from a pitch roof to a beautiful new white PVC single ply roof.

Thanks to the dedication of the crew the job that was dirty, small, tight, intricate and difficult is now COMPLETE! Great work, men!

TORCH SAFETY COURSE Moncton Branch knows that since the majority of the roofs in New Brunswick are modified bitumen, torch safety is the upmost importance.

Whether crews are working in Service or Production, they are bound to end up on a 20,000 square foot torch project at some point in their roofing careers. So, Rick Horvath worked with the New Brunswick Roofing Contractors Association to facilitate a Torch Safety Training Course. Fifty per cent of the Moncton Branch field employees attended this year’s course and the remaining crews are already signed up for next year.

RECORD TIME FOR ROOF LAY DOWN ON Liquor STORE! (Hmmm!?)

HALIFAX GETS CANADIAN BLOOD SERVICES HEADQUARTERS

Moncton Branch Roofing Division brought in a Fredericton crew on yet another rubber and rock project for a very happy Bird Construction Superintendent.

Bird Construction and Halifax Branch Roofing teamed up on this large high profile project that will be the new Canadian Blood Services head office for the Atlantic Canada.

Foreman Graham Cole and his crew completed the 10,000 square foot ANBL Liquor Store roof in Saint John, New Brunswick in record time even under winter conditions.

No small task given the scope of work on multiple layers and levels, but Austin Laney and his crew are up for the challenge. Crews progressed nicely as they made safety and quality their top priority.

The Sobeys store in the background of the crew photo was another EPDM project completed by Graham and his crew as well, for Bird Construction. Great job guys!

A LITTLE FAVOUR GOES A LONG, LONG WAY Moncton Branch service crews were asked by owner and general contractor, The Department of Supply & Services to complete a small detailed service job at Sir James Dunn Academy.

So, proven roofing Veteran Roger Savoie geared down from production work to complete the work. Roger and Jim Gilles worked closely with a masonry sub-contractor to complete the installation of a through wall flashing at the school in St. Andrews, New Brunswick.

The job included demolition of 4´ of the old wall, installation of membrane and metal through wall flashing and new membrane wall flashings. The work was completed with not even one deficiency and the school remained open the entire time.

PHASE 2 - A BIG DEAL FOR HALIFAX ROOFERS AS MALL EXPANDS

Halifax Branch roofing crews were chosen by general contractor RCS Construction recently to wrestle the extremely tight roofing schedule for the retail opening of Bedford Commons Phase 2 - a 110,000 square foot building addition.

Up for the task were Lewis Gale and his crew as well as members of Brian MacDonald’s crew. This crew mix certainly gave the schedule the much needed manpower to boost installation rates upwards of 40,000 square feet a day complete. Needless to say, the crew met the schedule to the delight of the general contractor and the owner.

THE KIND OF STUFF MOVIES ARE MADE of: THE PERFECT STORM! Vancouver Branch was contracted by Kinetic Construction to provide metals expertise on new moveable passenger loading ramps to accommodate new ferry berths at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal in Delta, BC. The project seemed like a piece of cake for the Flynn metals team as the berths were constructed on the ground and loaded into place. However, like any calm before a storm, the construction of the berths encountered many problems from water leaks to storm waves damaging our products. Who would have believed that?

Lead by Project Manager Ray Bruce, assisted by Project Coordinator Elaine Wilson, Foreman Uwe Krieger and his team tackled what seemed like never ending problems with professionalism creating a strong seaworthy loading berth to survive any BC storm.

UP, UP AND AWAY IN MY BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL - BASKET?

FIREFIGHTERS MOVE FROM A TENT INTO A WELL DESERVED, MODERN NEW FACILITY Vancouver Branch Metals Division once again teamed up with Dominion Fairmile Construction when the City of Richmond needed a new fire hall in Steveston.

The local firemen were tired of working out of a large portable tent and Dominion Fairmile Construction contracted Flynn to assist with the construction. Working on a tight site, crews even had issues finding a spot to lay down materials.

Led by Project Manager Ray Bruce with the assistance of Project Coordinator Elaine Wilson, Foreman Bryce Young and his metals team took on the challenge of installing the cladding for the local heroes.

And rise to great heights they did, quite literally, in order to carry out some repairs to wind‑damaged

composite panels on the Engineering and Computer Science Building at the University of Victoria. The only way to reach the work location was via a man basket and crane due to site conditions.

THE OLD CRAFTSMAN SPIRIT is ALIVE AND WELL ON SPIRIT RIDGE

VICTORIA BRANCH RAMPS UP FOR FIRST GLAZING PROJECT Victoria Branch has recently expanded into the glazing field and the Branch’s first glazing project is a LEED Gold site for Ecole Au Coeur De L’ile under the direction of general contractor Ketza Pacific in Comox BC. Flynn’s scope of work involved the supply and install of Kawneer curtain walls with high performance glass to meet the new environmental and safety demands of the current building trends. Reclaimed timbers from an old school have been integrated into the tall curtain walls on the north side of the structure.

It is anticipated that once production ramps up on this site Foreman Shawn Leggitt and Amber Andrews, shown right, will be joined by another four or five Flynn members.

Victoria Branch Metals Division employees Adam Brown, shown above left, and Uwe Beck, right, tackled a complicated new residential project on Spirit Ridge Drive in Victoria, B.C. Mr. Uwe Beck comes to us from East Germany where he has had extensive experience in cladding and sheet metal with a specialty in copper. Good thing because this project has a lot of architectural copper features that are perfectly matched to Uwe’s skills. Adam Brown is assisting.

These copper components include a cupola, hand formed radius gutters and decorative radius standing seam panels.

EXPERIENCE, PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY ARE JUST THREE KEY ELEMENTS TO CONTRACTORS General contractor Beattie Group called the Calgary Branch Roofing Division on yet another project; this time for Trans Canada Turbines.

The roofing crews had a successful experience on a project right next door in 2010, so the Beattie Group offered Flynn the roofing contract on this monster 200,000 square foot ballasted EPDM project.

Foreman Kory Robbins and his men kept up to the general contractor and closed in the roof in good time. As schedule is everything, and time is money, to most contractors, Beattie was very happy to have the reliability of Flynn to get the job done quickly and safely.

ATLANtIC ART BLOCK IN CALGARY GETS MUCH NEEDED NEW ROOF

FROM OPTIMISM TO DETERMINATION FOR CALGARY ROOFERS IN OLDS Calgary Branch roofing crews pose for a picture on a nice sunny fall day back in October, just as the project was getting underway. Foreman James Pyykonen and crew were optimistic that they could start and maintain a fast paced, successful project at the Olds College Agricultural Building, but the weatherman had other ideas.

James and his group fought valiantly all winter, through record snow falls, to complete this job by the scheduled end date. The crew who were determined to finish the project on time were from left to right in the back row: Foreman James Pyykonen, Erik Pyykonen, Vincent Veitch, Shane Utley and Blake Sanderson. Calgary Branch roofers were called upon

by Clark Builders to help them with a difficult multi-roof type project. With between 12-15 roof areas, more than 30,000 square feet of ballasted EPDM and over 2,000 square feet of Tremco Cold and 15,000 square feet of conventional Sarnafil, it was a veritable roofing course itself.

Foreman Ryan Makin and his group kept the project going in the right direction on time and completing many areas as they became available.

CANNON COMPLEX COMPLETED Edmonton Branch roofing crews lead by Roger Farkes completed a 100,000 square foot roof replacement over the winter on two separate buildings.

WINTER TOO MUCH FOR MOST ROOFERS BUT NOT FLYNN ROOFERS!

Finishing on time and on budget, crews did a great job on the project.

Edmonton Branch and general contractor Clark Builders experienced a good, old fashioned, northern Alberta winter in 2010-2011 that was the worst in 30 years. Flynn crews were severely hampered while attempting to install the PVC roofing on the Emerald Hills High School project. But finally, after many setbacks, crews were able to overcome all odds and pushed ahead to get back on track to complete the project. A tough winter for sure!

AN OLD FRIEND IS A GOOD CUSTOMER! It seems every year in the fall the Calgary Branch Roofing Division receives a call from ING and Gienow Windows asking for a little help with this 30+ year old manufacturing facility.

Calgary Production roofing always helps out old friends. So, Foreman Brian McCaghren and his crew replaced the built-up roofing membrane and about half of the insulation on this year’s section which was just over half an acre. The project, although a little tough to get going, went without a hitch and made both the owner and tenant happy, we hope to see them again this fall and make a little more of the building water tight.

CREW HAD its WORK CUT-OUT ON THIS PROJECT Edmonton Branch undertook another multi-scope, architecturally intense project consisting of leaning walls in all directions and the use of multiple products for the South Station Fire Hall in Ft. McMurray. The architect used his imagination by combining several angles and elevations to achieve the desired effect.

DOING A JOB WELL THE FIRST TIME LEADS TO SECOND ROOFING AWARD Calgary Branch was called upon by Maple Leaf Properties who needed help getting this time sensitive project, called The Harry Hayes Building, underway.

The structure houses the main offices of many Government of Canada Services, from Immigration to the Passport Office. The roof areas are as diverse as the tenants they include.

Calgary production roofing, with the help of the Service and Glazing departments, was happy to help provide a timely solution to the many issues that existed throughout the winter.

At times, shovelling more snow than roofing, Foreman Randy Gidilewich led the charge to install over 90,000 square feet of inverted roofing.

Maple Leaf Properties thought that Randy and his crews did such a great job that Flynn was awarded Phase Two which will be completed soon. Excellent job, guys!

FLYNN CREWS ARE EVERYWHERE, EVEN IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

ANOTHER MAJOR ANCHOR PROJECT FOR EDMONTON GLAZING DIVISION

Roofing crews from the Edmonton Branch were recently contracted to install 24,500 square feet of ballasted EPDM for BCN in Wabasca, Alberta.

by PCL Construction Management Inc. for the new Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies facility in the provincial capital.

But finding this job location was tougher than the project itself. According to crews you need to drive to the middle of nowhere, turn right and drive another two hours. More physically difficult for crews on site was dealing with a lot of excess run-off and mud from the worst winter in decades.

Despite these issues the project was completed in good time and looks great.

The state-of-the-art facility brings together students, professors, and researchers from a variety of scientific endeavours to create a unique combined approach to scientific discovery.

Flynn’s scope of work incorporates a quantity of 6mm and 12mm specialty glass, that would cover over 3 football fields in area, more than 16 kilometres of caulking beads, 2800 lites of handrail glass and 6000 lites of smoke baffles.

Hats off to Nelson Pilgrim and his team who earned high praise from PCL for their professional approach and their dedication to working safely.

FINAL REPORT: EDMONTON BRANCH PUTTING THE FINAL TOUCHES AS EPCOR TOWER DRAWS TO AN END As spring arrived, the EPCOR tower project, shown at left, was in its final stages of completion with all three scopes working together to hit an anticipated completion date of summer 2011.

There have been many challenges on site from a rough winter to all aspects that come from working on a high rise building. The efforts of all three disciplines can clearly be seen on this beautiful 30 storey office tower as you venture through downtown Edmonton.

The glazing crew’s efforts focused on completing all work including composite panels on the roof crowns, panelized guardrail systems on the roof terraces and finishing the 46 balconies running up either side of the tower.

The metals division has been in full swing since they came on site in November 2010.

They have been focused on installing the 2000 composite panels on the balconies along with AD300 cladding on the roof and composite soffit panels at the main entrance. Although the crew still has work ahead of them, the continuous effort and positive attitude has helped to keep the project on schedule.

Roofing has had its challenges with the Edmonton winter. Roofers have been hard at work completing all remaining roof systems throughout the building on the various roof elevations. Paver stone installation commenced directly after the roofers had completed various levels.

From all crew members on site who have helped push for a successful completion to the project; to the shop personnel for providing flashings and panels in a timely manner for our installation crews, the continuous efforts by all involved, has been greatly appreciated.

THESE CREWS ARE SOME TOUGH! Edmonton Branch Metals Division was chosen by Bird Construction for the metal panel scope on this northern Alberta oil sands community project.

Working in freezing temperatures, Dave Luscombe and his team battled through the elements to complete the installation of horizontal foam panels. These panels are very difficult to install in sub-zero temperatures.

So, tough may not be strong enough to describe this crew and the conditions they faced during one of the worst winter conditions seen here in years.

FLYNN CREWS MAKE BIG IMPRESSION ON CONTRACTOR Vancouver Branch and TASK Construction once again joined forces on another multi-scope project. Work has started on the new design build Central Agricultural Facility building. The project involved three scopes of work for the branch including glazing, Accumet2000 panels as well as SBS and TPO roofing.

NATION BUILDING - AT THE GRASS ROOTS LEVEL Victoria Branch was proud to have been a part of one of its main projects this year: the remediation of the Bella Community School. The Heiltsuk Nation, with the help of David Nairne + Associates Ltd., entrusted Flynn with not only replacing the roof assemblies, but also providing a seismic upgrade. Bella Bella is on a remote island on the BC coast. This project has included inspections from Westcoast Roof Inspections, Soprema, and Hilti.

Flynn crews have been diligently implementing the Flynn safety policies and procedures and their efforts have been noticed and recognized by the TASK Construction Safety Officer John Polano, who wrote:

For Foreman Chris Sitter, this project has been the epitome of outof-town jobs. Chris and crew were on site for five months. Material and equipment had to be barged in from Vancouver for this 350 square re-roof. Among the logistical challenges, cellular and internet service could not be depended on.

Just a short note, thanking you and the crew for an exemplary presence on-site. It’s reassuring to know I can rely on your work plans being followed, PPE being used, and a clean area when done. It is always a pleasure working with safety conscious and professional people such as you.

MEMBRANE MANUFACTURERS GO HEAD-TO-HEAD ON ALBERTA INFRASTRUCTURE RE ROOF Edmonton Branch was successful on a tender through Alberta Infrastructure for the partial re-roof of the O.S. Longman building. But this wasn’t a normal specification for a roof tender.

Read the letter below from OML Construction about the crew that worked on the Zinc panels at Ormed Headquarters in Edmonton. Pretty fine!

The specification and the project placed, head-to-head, two of Canada’s top reflective membrane manufacturers.

Alberta Infrastructure’s intent was to have two competitive reflective membrane products on the same building to monitor the performance and durability off each over the course of time.

Edmonton Service crews were up to the challenge with Sean Tung and crew receiving on site training by both IKO and Soprema. Crews were taught the principles and installation techniques of these high performance roof membranes. The project was completed with great success.

METAL CREW PARTICIPATEs IN SOUTHLAND MALL REMODELLING Regina Branch Metals Division was contracted to provide 3,000 lineal feet of cap and counter flashings on this mall retrofit project. Flynn Regina roofing crew also got into the act by cutting the roof open and making repairs for a new parapet structure that penetrated the roof.

UPDATE: ALMOST A YEAR LATER Edmonton Branch Roofing and Metals Divisions featured this project in the Flash when the project was just underway.

Crews certainly had their work cut out for them on this multi-scope project known as “The Edmonton Clinic South.”

The roofing scope was to cover the building with a PVC roof.

The metal scope consisted of Accumet aluminum composite panels, metal cladding and architectural louvres. With more than 4000 Accumet panels installed, the project becomes Flynn Edmonton’s largest-ever panel job.

BUILT IN 1913 THE PRINCE OF WALES LIBRARY IN REGINA GETS UPGRADED General contractor Westridge Construction called the Regina Branch to partake in a partial restoration of the original Prince of Wales library built back in 1913. It is one of the oldest buildings in Regina. The neighbourhood outgrew the facility and was in need of an upgrade. Flynn crews completed 5,000 square feet of SBS roofing, 2,500 square feet of cladding and blue skin and 200 square feet of Accumet2000 composite panel columns.

BE AWARE: YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT DANGERS MAY BE PRESENT! Regina Branch Service Department was asked by Pinnacle Properties of Calgary to replace about 1,400 square feet of roof at 1268 Albert Street including the removal of the existing roof right down to the vapour barrier. Crews were then to install 2 new layers of fibreboard with a 4‑ply built up roof system.

But working in the core of city next to a gas station meant safety setup was very important. Crews had to be concerned about the amount of traffic, as well as the close proximity to power lines, etc. This is known as a high crime area and as a result, at the end of each day, the site had to be virtually dismantled and stored back at the shop each day.

Because the roof had only a gravel stop edge, crews used 2 Raptor portable anchor systems for fall protection.

SNOW, SNOW AND MORE SNOW IN MOOSE JAW, SASKATCHEWAN Regina Branch received a contract from Canada Post Corporation in Moose Jaw to replace approximately 5,000 square feet of built-up re-roof. Usually these projects are a piece of cake, but not this winter.

After some minor weather issues that played havoc with the roofing schedule, our forces finally mobilized to site but then further weather events caused even more delays. “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow”.

However, through the co-operation of the mechanical contractor, who did some work in advance, crews were able to get the project completed.

CENTRAL VEHICLE AGENCY- GOVERNMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN AWARDS FLYNN SECOND CONTRACT Regina Branch roofing crews had re-roofed several sections of this building last year, leaving the customer very happy with the work. When the time came this year to award the remaining 4 sections, the Ministry of Government Services bypassed the tendering process and awarded the contract directly to Flynn based on the professionalism and quality of work our crews have shown in the past on this site.

The reroof project involved stripping off the old roof and replacing it with Soprabase FR and torch cap. Cory and his crew run a tight ship when it comes to safety and that attention to detail spills over in the quality of work too. This customer was very happy the second time around as well!

SLOPED ROOF A HUGE SLIP HAZARD Saskatoon Branch Service Department responded to a call that was made in mid-February when a customer, Great West Distribution, had a problem with water infiltration in a large section of low slope roof.

Upon arrival, safety concerns had to be addressed first as this roof was a huge slip hazard. Crews jumped into action to come up with a fall protection plan. Then, upon further inspection, crews identified numerous areas of rusted deck once the snow and ice had been removed. These areas were temperature sealed to the satisfaction of client.

However, it was the work ethic of the crews, through some pretty rough conditions, that proofed to be Flynn’s strength to get the job done quickly. In the end, communications with the client proved to be successful. In fact, the project developed into a large Garnite spray job.

A BETTER IDEA FROM WINTER‑WEARY WARRIORS AND THANKS! Because of the winter conditions, Saskatoon Service Superintendant Terry Ozmum was delegated to try to have the roof specification changed while the Dundurn Elementary School project was in progress.

Terry came through on the 4,300 square foot reroof, as the specification was successfully changed from an inverted SBS to a conventional SBS system.

Consisting of sloped insulation with Soprabase and granulated cap sheet, the modified roof specification was a much more realistic system during this particular time frame.

The Saskatchewan crew braved extreme weather conditions where cold temperatures can really be rough on crews and greatly influence the production rates accomplished from day to day. The Flynn crew on this particular site is extremely experienced with these types of conditions. They are not for the timid.

Management thanks this crew, and in fact, all Flynn crews for that matter, for the real workmanship and effort that they put in to make these gruelling projects a success. Also, thanks to Project Manager Rocky Luciw, and Superintendant Terry Ozmun for consistently making sure that these projects run smoothly.

WORKING IN -45°C TEMPERATURES CAN’T BE VERY HEALTHY Saskatoon Branch Metal Division crews installed more than 78,800 square feet of roof and floor deck for the new Academic Health Sciences E-Wing at the University of Saskatchewan. The project was phased over an eight month period.

Flynn field employees developed a great working relationship with both general contractor PCL and the University of Saskatchewan Safety Officers while on site. Flynn’s safety culture and PCL’s complement one another as very strict guidelines are enforced by both companies. And the employees have all done a tremendous job to keep up with those standards.

Being in a very restricted and tight work area, Flynn crews faced numerous challenges trying to install deck in a confined work space. However they pushed through it at an awesome pace to get the job completed on time to the delight of the University and PCL. Metal Supervisor, Craig Kucher, worked closely with PCL personnel to arrange deliveries and manpower requirements to meet the project schedule.

With the weather in Saskatchewan being so terrible (-45° at times), our men have done a great job staying on schedule and being very efficient with their work. Thanks to Kevin and crew for the real effort and the great workmanship.

DOWNTOWN SITES ARE ALL ABOUT PUBLIC SAFETY, FIRE AWARENESS

WINNIPEG BRANCH TRAINS UP BEFORE THE 2011 SUMMER RUSH

Winnipeg Branch Metals Division took on a tricky little project for the Centre For Youth Excellence located right in the middle of downtown Winnipeg.

Foreman Ryan Renou and his crew had to deal with a site that had extremely limited space to even set up. Two of the crew’s major priorities on the project were public safety and fire prevention. While the crew was safety conscious about shutting down one of Winnipeg’s busiest sidewalks, they also had to be concerned of fire risk while installing 40,000 square feet of torch-on vapour barrier.

Ryan and his crew have been diligent in ensuring that fire extinguishers are inspected regularly, that each torch has the adequate number and type of fire extinguishers and that the mandatory 2 hour fire watch is completed.

In addition to the vapour barrier installed, Ryan and his crew installed more than 26,000 square feet of Kalzip 65/400 profile metal roof panel, more than 19,000 square feet of metal siding and 230 square feet of composite panel.

Nice mix!

Winnipeg Branch held its annual training days again this past February. February is pretty chilly in Winnipeg, so it’s the perfect time for the 2 day event.

The purpose of offering various is to ensure that all employees have the proper training, so they can hit the ground running when the spring/summer push arrives.

Everyone from the office, field and shop took part in all or some of the courses offered. The instructors had nothing but positive feedback with regard to employee commitment to safety as well as their willingness to learn and interact.

CREW Exercises EXTREME CAUTION ON AN ARCHITECTURAL FOAM IN BUSY TRAFFIC AREA

Winnipeg Branch metals crew installing 13,000 square feet of 3˝ thick foam panels on the new Winnipeg Regional Health Authority’s building addition.

Hamilton Branch Roofing installed more than 22,000 square feet on four different roof areas on the St. Anthony Elementary School in St. Catharines, Ontario.

The architectural application features a custom layout to create the exterior façade that complied with the architect’s vision of the exterior aesthetics. Swing stages were used due to the site’s tight and very limited space. As always, public safety was a major priority for the crew as they worked over a lane of traffic and an open sidewalk.

This 4-ply BUR roof replacement project was to be completed while students were still in class. Students were moved around so they were never under where crews were roofing. The principal was very accommodating and was willing to do anything to help us get the job done safely. The Consultant on the project was Jocelyn Roof Consultants.

TOMLINSON LEAKS THE LEAST AT MANITOBA AIR BARRIER RODEO Winnipeg Branch’s own Tyler Tomlinson claimed 1st prize in the Manitoba Air Barrier Rodeo early this past spring. The Rodeo consisted of 9 teams of 4, each of which must have one representative from the following fields: Architecture, Engineer, General Contracting and Trade Contracting.

Each team had to design and install an air barrier assembly that conformed to the air barrier manufacturers’ installation instructions as well as applicable building codes and standards.

Tyler’s team achieved the best score with the least amount of recorded leakage to win the Manitoba Air Barrier Rodeo while leaving others in his dust. This just might be further proof that Flynn is a leader in the air barrier installation industry. Great job, Tyler and team!

TAG TEAMING WORKED WELL FOR HAMILTON AND TORONTO CREWS Hamilton Branch roofing crew set out to install 3,000 square feet of roofing on the Bruce Nuclear Power B06 Building at NRB Modular Buildings in Grimsby, Ontario.

Once completed NRB will then ship the building approximately 3 hours away to Bruce Nuclear Power site on Lake Huron. The Toronto Branch will then finish roofing the structure once the building arrives on site.

The real issue on this roofing project was the total of 5 drains and 70 penetrations.

CAMBRIDGE CREW GOes FROM NICE FALL WEATHER TO THE DEPTHS OF WINTER AS SCHEDULES SLIDE Kitchener Branch Roofing Division once again teamed with Bondfield Construction on this multi-year, multi-phase project for the University Of Guelph.

The Engineering Building scope included 33,100 square feet of cold adhesive build-up with fully tapered insulation. What made this a particularly challenge project was the more than 130 penetrations that needed to be water-proofed.

Another issue was that the initial schedule called for a late summer start-finish but due to delays by other trades, Flynn crews were forced to do the work during the winter months.

Fortunately this crew was well versed in operating cold adhesive sprayers. These sprayers have a built in heater to keep the product warm and workable in the cold weather.

WESTON PROJECT A GOOD PROVING GROUND FOR YOUNG FOREMAN Kitchener Branch Roofing Division worked directly with the owner Weston Bakeries Ltd. on this good old four ply built-up roof. The 12,600 square foot project also included waterproofing and installation of siding on a large portion of the high to low wall.

WEST INVADES EAST AT MILITARY COLLEGE The “McIntyre Clan” from the west have invaded the east and taken over the Sawyer Girouard Renovation at the Royal Kingston Military in Kingston Ontario with Ottawa Branch metals for Ellis-Don Construction Corporation.

The crew installed more than 9500 square feet of Accumet2000 composite aluminum architectural panels in two colours. Also some 3,400 square feet of interior liner sheets were installed.

Site conditions were tight on this 2 phases project; the first to be completed by the end of June and the second phase by the New Year. To date the crew is approximately one month ahead of the contractor’s schedule as the work continues to run very smoothly due to Cliff and his crew’s attention to detail. Another huge plus is Cliff’s ability to deal with the majority of issues on

THE SHOW MUST GO ON DESPITE REGINA INN ROOF REPLACEMENT Regina Branch service crew worked with owner and national client Silverbirch Hotels and Resorts Ltd. when a new roof was required on the Regina Inn. The well co-ordinated, multi- trade project included carpentry, masonry and electrical trade work.

The contract included the need to accommodate the client’s schedule and most importantly to keep the banquet facilities operational.

The crew installed an additional ply of granulated cap sheet over the existing 4-ply felt membrane with a Sopramat covering for new deck supports. The crew also removed and then re-built an existing 1,000 square foot outdoor wood deck patio as well. The project was completed almost unbearable, adverse weather conditions with wind chills reaching -48°C. Nevertheless the client was very pleased with Flynn’s performance and ability to accommodate their schedule with a proactive approach to the project.

WESTMOUNT SHOPPING CENTRE NEARING COMPLETION London Branch service crews tied up a few loose ends on an 11,500 square foot BUR multi level new and ReRoof project at the Westmount Mall.

General contractor Ellis-Don Construction Corporation contacted Flynn to do the work that included the removal of the complete built-up roof system as well as the preparation to add new walls to tie into the existing roof area.

With this project being located outside of city limits, Foreman Glen Kaus and his crew dealt with everything from snow, rain and high winds on a daily basis. If that wasn’t enough the crew also had very limited options with regards to tie off points but was easily resolved with the use of multiple PR600s.

CREWS COMPLETE CHURCH RE-ROOF Hamilton Branch roofing crews replaced almost 19,000 square feet of roofing for Bob Harvey & Associates on the Evangel Church in Brantford.

This roof replacement consisted of three flat roof areas and a further three sloped roof sections. Roofing on flat roofs was 4-ply Built-up-roofing with a flood coat and gravel while the sloped roof areas were covered with pre-painted metal roofing.

YOU JUST GOTTA BELIEVE! ONE GOOD TURN DESERVES ANOTHER The shop drawing engineer for the new Winnipeg Branch building requested that Flynn complete his own building.

The owner, F.A. Roberts & Associates, who has worked with Flynn for many years, was beyond pleased with the crew for not only their unbelievable workmanship and attention to detail but how safety conscious they were. In fact, because of this, they asked the crew to complete the architectural front feature using Swiss Pearl and Prodema panels as well.

Foreman Stan Feschuk and his crew installed 2,400 square feet of metal cladding on the north, east and south elevations.

Harlynn Chuback There are a lot of individuals who work tirelessly to keep our Branches functioning smoothly and most of the time with little recognition.

Award For New Toronto Facility Building REX Awards is a recognition program that celebrates the achievements of the office, industrial and mixed-use real estate industry in the Greater Toronto Area. The awards criteria focus on results (quality and performance), skills (teamwork, collaboration, innovation and creativity) and values (community and environmental awareness).

Harlynn Chuback is one of those people. Harlynn, Branch Administrator in Regina, is shown above, flanked by CEO Doug Flynn, left and Branch Manager Stan Maciboric, right, recently celebrated her 10 Years of Service Award with Flynn Canada Ltd. She, along with all other Branch Administrators, are hard-working folks who are truly the glue that keeps the Branch together.

We recognize, not only Harlynn, but all administrators , for the work they do and the patience they display as they really do take on the brunt of the workload that seemingly everyone throws their way. They are the true unsung heroes of the Branches.

SAFETY IS NOT EXPENSIVE, IT’S PRICELESS. SO ARE THESE LETTERS! Vancouver Service crews teamed up with Elias Tkachuk Contracting Ltd. and IRC Consultants on a No Frills store in Vancouver recently.

It is not too often that I am impressed enough to actually take the time to share my thoughts about it, however following the substantial completion of the above referenced project late last night, I made a note to forward my reflection of the efforts expended by the various parties and in particular those of Flynn Canada, Vancouver Service, as you and I discussed last weekend.

Kitchener Branch roofing crews were contracted by SNC Lavalin Inc. to provide the built-up roofing on this 36,000 square feet addition to a very sensitive pharmaceutical facility at Novocol. The roof build-up included 3˝ Iso insulation with fully tapered insulation set in instastick adhesive with a mopped base sheet and a torched cap sheet.

I want to personally convey my satisfaction with Chi, Wayne and the six or seven key guys that worked on this site well into every night under very trying conditions with me looming over them and pushing hard every single minute. This would include the guys that put in a full day on other sites then packed up to come over and help out on this site. The working conditions were terrible, with excessive noise, poor air quality, lack of sufficient lighting, no cooperation by the GC, constant lack of power, eight other trades all scrambling over one another and on and on. Despite these challenges, Wayne led his crew by literally running for hours on end. It was largely his commitment to forging ahead that “got the job done” and we would have been hard pressed to meet our completion schedule if it weren’t for Wayne and his core guys. Chi also rose to the occasion and the contribution on his end with Glen Sweezy was awarded the oncoordination of forces and materials cannot be ignored. There were considerable challenges on site safety award by SNC risk manager the logistics side of the project and Chi stated time and again that no matter what, he would get for going over and above their safety to the finish line on time and he delivered. In the end it was an extremely challenging project expectations on site. Congratulations under very trying conditions all conducted with me driving them hard and each one of them Glen! Oh…by the way Glen walked away performed admirably. The mood last night as we watched the last of the asphalt paving cover the last of the membrane that had just been installed was more in keeping with a “super bowl with a $100.00 gift card. after party” than the wrap up of a week from hell, which speaks to the team that was formed The remainder of the crew included by all in order to meet our common objective.
