$10,028 RAISED FOR CDA – WHAT A GREAT DAY!

On October 17, 2010, the Toronto branch participated in the Goodlife Toronto Marathon representing Team Diabetes to raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

CALGARY SERVICE GETS A SNOWJOB! The Calgary Branch took on a relatively small re-roof project at the Marlborough Mall for owner 20VIC and IRC Consultants.

C rews were to complete 6500 square foot job before November 30 but ran into some terrible weather and delayed their pro g ress for about two weeks. First crews were hit by daily snowfalls that accumulated to two feet on the roof, and then they were hit with -41°C degree temperatures.

By November 26th crews had not ripped off any of the old roofing; only shoveled the snow. The Service department teamed up with Production to replace the roof over the next 3 days to a pleasantly surprised client.

As a result the owner awarded the branch another 2000 square feet of replacement. This was a mall that had been serviced by a major c o m p e t i t o r for the previous 5 or 6 years up until this past summer.

PRESTIGIOUS SOUTH WEST REC CENTRE NEARS COMPLETION Midwest Glazing, located within the Edmonton Branch facility was proud to have been selected by General Contractor Stuart Olson Dominion Construction Ltd. for this high profile project in the provincial capital.

A p p roximately 14,000 square feet of curtain wall, 7,000 square feet of Tri-Fab and 3,000 square feet of glass guardrail have been incorporated into this multi-use facility. Since this is a high humidity building, our installation crews have been utilizing their skills and training to ensure that all envelope seals have been applied and secured to provide optimum performance.

Challenges such as the compound miters at the head of the clere s t o ry curtain wall frames and site access have been met and overcome by our fabrication and installation crews.

SITE DELAYS FORCE CREWS INTO WINTER Flynn Industrial Division, based in Edmonton accepted a contract to supply and install metal deck and cladding on a B.C. Hydro project in the northern town of Fort Nelson. The work was to have commenced in June when temperatures were in the mid 20’s. However, many delays on site pushed the schedule back to the point where field crews were then faced with snowy and freezing conditions. These men are hardy bunch, to be sure, as they persevered to complete the work despite the weather.

CORNER BROOK CITY HALL The City of Corner Brook, Newfoundland is getting a serious upgrade to their existing City Hall, and the Halifax Bra n ch Metals Division is proud to have been a part of its success. Crews installed more than 17,000 square feet of composite metal panels, bringing a fre s h , modern look to the new facility.

HAMILTON STEEL COMPANY RELIES ON FLYNN EXPERTISE Th e H a m i l to n B ra n ch working under the watchful eye of Dycon Roof Consultants recently c o mp l e t e d m o re t h a n 110,000 square feet of roof replacement and sheet metal flashings at Taylor Steel’s Plant #2 in Stoney Creek, Ontario. Two roof areas were in the scope of work as was interior protection over the steel coils everyday with removal of tarps at end of each day.

The roof composition was made up of steel deck with Kraft adhere d polyisocyanurate insulation, t a p e red sumps, asphalt i m p regnated fibre b o a rd , 3plies of #15, and 1-ply Type IV glass felts all mopped in asphalt. All that topped off with a gravel pour and a flood coat of Tremco Powerply HMA with a double pour in the corners. Whew! That’s some roof. The flashings were 3-ply Type IV glass felt mopped in and 1-ply TRA flashings in Powerply HMA. OUT WITH ASBESTOS – IN WITH FLYNN AT UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO A London Branch roofing crew, in the photo from left to right are: Jeff Mowry, Jeffery Gare, Rob Monk, Nathan Medeiros, Foreman Rui Medeiros and Eduardo Medeiros worked with Norlon Builders to install a new roof system on the old Physics and Astronomy structure at the University of Western Ontario. After the asbestos was removed, the Flynn crew came in to install the new roof system that consisted of 2 ply modified bituminous with 2 layers of base insulation and tapered insulation, Great job guys, keep up the safe work.

COPPER CAPS FOR IVOR WYNNE CENTRE AT MCMASTER The Hamilton Branch has completed two the roofs with the same Siplast copper cap sheet in the past couple of years and so when the Branch landed this 20,000 plus square foot project Victor Maderios and his crew were called in to perform the work.

The branch was not afraid to tackle this unique project that included the priming of the existing membrane, torch applying a Paradiene 20 base followed by a Paradiene 30 cap. The crews also supplied and installed new metal sub-girts and 5/8� tongue and groove plywood covered with a Nail Irex base sheet with a torched Siplast Veral copper cap sheet. Nice work, guys!

FIRE LEADS TO HEROIC SAVING OF SCHOOL An O ttawa Branch Service crew, made up of Ren Roy, left and Keith McLean, right, were on their way back from a service call at the end of their day when they noticed a fire on the roof of Manor Park Public School. The structure was being re-roofed by a competitor at the time. Ken & Keith took the initiative to extinguish the flames. They then proceeded to any materials that could be the source of re-ignition. They completed a thorough investigation of the area before leaving the site. Congratulations Ken and Keith for taking the initiative and helping out a fellow contractor.

CREWS HAD TO CHILL ON MARKET RE-ROOF A Kitchener Branch crew is shown above completing a 19,500 square foot roof replacement with IRC Consultants for Zehr’s an Ontario subsidiary of Loblaw’s. Cre w s remained cautious as they tackled the complicated 2-ply mod-bid torched on re-roof project as they dealt with chillers and air units that could not be shut down during the tear off.

HIGH WINDS PLAGUE MINE SITE – BELIEVE IT! The Kitchener Branch was faced with a very difficult project when they came across this 120,000 square foot storage facility at the Sifto Salt Mine in Goderich. Concerns over the project started even before crews were on site as the half built steel structure, with an 11/12 roof pitch, had been blown over by extreme winds off Lake Huron. There was no one on site at the time and no one was injured.

Crews supplied and installed a new single ply mechanically fastened product from the US which posed shipping and customs issues. Specially engineered scaffolding was utilized by the crew for this very unique project.

NOT A GREAT PLACE TO HAVE A LEAK London Bra n ch Service crews tackled three separate re - roof areas at the St. Thomas-Elgin Hospital under the direction of IRC Building Sciences Group that had caused continuous problems at the facility. Crews were able to solve a particularly persistent one in the President’s office where a leak appeared every time it rained. The hospital s u p e r i n t e n d a nt made a c a l l into the office expressing to us that although we had only been on the job a few days, the hospital was e x t remely happy with the service pro v i d e d .

AFTER ONE AND A HALF YEARS: A THING OF BEAUTY EMERGES The Halifax Bra n ch joined General Contractor: PCL Constructors Canada Inc. on yet another shining example of Flynn’s multi-scope capabilities. This time it was g l a zi n g , composite panel and metal cladding on Dalhousie University’s new Life Sciences Research Institute.

The exterior walls of this building were a joint effort between the Halifax Metals Division and Flynn Glazing as a unitized curtain wall system compliments the composite metal panels and metal cladding. The building represents one of the many projects that Dalhousie will be u n d e rtaking in the next decade. As well, it is a step forward for Halifax and its plan for m o d e rnization. The facility will open in early 2011.

REGINA WEATHER IS A REAL DRAG IN WINTER Regina Branch roofing crews completed a p p roximately 20,000 square feet of re - ro o f on this Canada Post Corporation facility by replacing the existing with a new 4-ply BUR roof. Working 80-90 feet off the ground can pose some major issues but since this was the second area on this building the Branch had been contracted for crews knew exactly how to deal with them.

With safety a top priority, the amount of ground traffic became a huge concern, so a protective scaffold was set up on the street side to put everyone’s mind at ease. And just as crews were ready to get going, winter showed up. But with lots of experience in winter conditions Harley and crew survived.

CREWS PASS SECURITY AND SAFETY TESTS London Branch crews had to work diligently as they installed a barrel roof and two flat roof areas at the Greater London International Airport. Safety and security was, as usual, a huge consideration as crews worked right on the apron installing two layers of insulation with dens deck board and a single ply membrane from Sarnafil.

SPECIALIST CREW IN COLD-APPLIED CHOSEN Ro ger LeBlanc and his crew from the Moncton Branch were chosen to re-roof some 17,500 square feet on Mount Allison University’s Library Building because of their expertise in applying a cold applied Tremco Burmastic roof.

Both the owner and Tremco were very pleased with the perf o rmance our crews.

MONCTON SERVICE PUT ON QUITE A SHOW The Moncton Branch Service Department was hired by the City of Fredericton to take on a large maintenance project. Led by Dean Snow, the crew worked diligently to complete the work that included work on two different facilities within the city.

Between the Playhouse (Theatre) and the Public Library the crew worked o n 2 3 d i ff e re n t r o o f s e c ti o n s . The men did everything from minor spot replacement to a couple of re-roof areas including maintenance and re-capping of some of the other roof sections.

CONTAINMENTS LEAD TO RE-ROOF PROJECT Vancouver Branch Service crews were called in when the City of White Rock determined that the recent contaminated water scare was actually caused by a roof failure on their 110 foot tall reservoir.

Working with general contractor Tri-Tech, on behalf of Epcor Services, crews installed a Soprema 3 ply SBS roof system, complete with a fully adhered sloped insulation package, and liquid membrane flashings. The work was a bit unusual as crews could only access the roof in a two man crane operated basket. Thanks to Billy Yorke, Pat Lord, Wayne Tidd and Earl Anonby who worked quickly and effectively to meet the clients accelerated schedule and special conditions. Way to work together, guys!

WHERE’S THE BEEF? Moncton Branch landed its first project direct with owner Maple Leaf Foods recently. Laird Moore and his cre w completed 22,000 square feet of re-roof project using a Soprema 2-ply modified roof system. The crew did such a great job that the owner is already talking about another 6 months of work for this crew in the spring.

CREWS GET A CHARGE OUT OF WORKING HERE A Moncton Branch crew shown in the photo from left to right: Foreman Graham Cole, Patrice Sauvageau, Dustin Jenkins, Jason Hoyt, Peter Jones, Dwayne Phillips and Jason Grasse completed this 14,000 square foot re-roof project in record time at this remote Beechwood Generating Station for New Brunswick Power.

KEEPING THE BORDER SAFE AND GREEN! Toronto Branch Green Roofing Foreman John Bentley and crew completed a 20,000 square foot green roof at the Queenston Lewiston Bridge this summer for general contractor Aecon Buildings.

During an intense heat, wave they managed to beat the heat and install the green roof.

This was an excellent opportunity to work with the Hamilton branch, in this unique sector.

It was almost a complete building envelope package for Flynn which included roofing, green roofing and architectural products.

The green roof was a buildup of root barrier, insulation, drainage board, filter cloth, soil and pre-grown vegetated mats. Below is the finished product.

Foreman John Bentley and Sheldon Henry installed the vegetated mats, while Todd Hlusiak and Patrick Biller filled in the gaps with sedums. Other crew members involved in the project included Damon Dewsbury, Tyler Mathies, Cavan Cottell, Eddie Jara, Sue Illes and Serefino Corriero.

A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE AFTER FLYNN Moncton Branch Service crews were beefed up to take on a re-roof project for NB Housing recently as crews ripped off an old modified bitumen roof and installed a fully adhered Sar nafil s y s t e m . The Lewis S t reet building was not large but had a saw-tooth shape at th e b a c k a n d o v e r twenty small overhangs with shingles. Needless to say it was a project best suited for a detail guy like Ryan Baisley.

Although it was the fi r s t f u l l y a d h e re d r e - r o o f Ryan has done, you would never have known it as the roof looks excellent and passed all m a n u facturers’ inspections.

A CERTAIN EXPERTISE WAS REQUIRED HERE Moncton Branch Service crews led

by Foreman Terry Walker took on a project like nothing the Branch had every done before. The shingled roof for the Potash Corporation n of Saskatchewan (yes in New Brunswick) was a 31,500 square foot, 12 in 12 roof slope facility.

Flynn’s scope of work included the replacement of the existing shingles and plywood deck with a new Soprema Unilay roof. Terry and his crew were involved in every aspect of the project as their expertise and ingenuity proved to be invaluable in pulling this project together. The crew completed the job to the highest standards of quality and safety.

ANNUAL NATIONAL SAFETY TRAINING Flynn Canada and BLJC came together to provide safety training to all service employee to sharpen their safety skills. At the beginning of 2011 Flynn began their P.O.S.T. (Petroleum Oriented Safety Training) reviews for all service employees.

Flynn would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all who completed and passed the twelve lifesaving rules, High Risk and P.O.S.T. training.

The purpose of this training is to bring all of us to a new level in Safety and Service Excellence.

A WINTER ROOFING DAY! Regina Bra n ch c rews worked really hard l a y i n g asphalt just to try to stay warm right in the heart of downtown Regina. Foreman Harley Tawpisin had left nothing to chance with regard to safety on this site as crews installed netting was installed around the perimeter at the top of the structure, as well as hoarding along street. All asphalt and other materials were hoisted up and all garbage and rock was bagged to come down to avoid dust or debris escaping from a traditional chute.

Excellent communication between client and contractor was important to the success of the project.

ANOTHER REMINDER…….

Regina Branch crews laid more than 64,000 square feet of new inverted EPDM roofing on this massive structure, once covered with 3 ft of earth and concrete. The entire area had to be cleaned and prepped for the new roof. The reservoir is round and posed certain issues when laying the insulation. Flynn crews are very capable of dealing with just about anything - except winter.

And once again, Mother Nature showed the crew who’s really in control with a blast of cold and snow that slowed down the

progress of the project. However these devoted men just kept pushing themselves. With an average insulation thickness of 17 inches and an R value of over 90, this Regina water supply will never freeze. At least that’s what everyone hopes! SCRATCH MY BACK; I’LL SCRATCH YOURS The Hamilton Branch was awarded a re-roof contract at O’Brien’s installations as the company completely renovated their existing building from top to bottom. O’Brien is also supplying and installing the new cranes for Flynn’s new Toronto facility.

A total of 26,400 square feet of roof replacement complete with all new sheet metal flashings on three roof areas were in the scope of work.

LARGEST RE-ROOF OF THE YEAR BRINGS CREWS TOGETHER S a s k a toon Branch received one of their largest re - ro o f p ro j e c ts of the year from general contractor CCM Construction recently for the new Canadian Tire store in Saskatoon. The unusual element of this project was that crews had to remove the deck as well and were allowed to

leave the roof open as the entire building was being gutted.

A number of men were sent to site on days that no other job seemed fit to work on as they tore off the existing roof on what was once a Wal-mart store. A crew from Kelowna was then b rought in to install the new TPO roof. The branch knew that these w e re the right guys for the job and would like to thank them for going out of their way to help us with this major project. The tender called for an extremely tight schedule but the branch knew it could be competitive due to this crew’s expertise, dedication and work ethic.

HEPBURN SCHOOL AVOIDS COLLAPSE Saskatoon Branch service crews were called out on an emergency call to remove snow and inverted ballast after a building inspection by the school division found that the suspended ceiling was showing signs of sagging. Further inspection revealed that a serious structural problem had developed.

C rews were dispatched the next morning to set up swiftly and safely to correct the problems as most rooms had to be v acated. A follow up phone call was received from head of maintenance praising the branch and the crews for the professional manner in which they handled themselves to resolve this serious problem.

MONSTER RE-ROOF ON THE ROCK COMPLETED The St John’s Branch was selected to perform an 110,000 square foot re-roof project on the Kent Supply building store in the capital city recently. The scope of work included the removal of the mechanically fastened EPDM membrane and re-applying fibre board, a new base and cap sheet laid in hot asphalt. A nice size project well done by our crews.

UNIVERSITY BUILDING CUT UP AND DIFFICULT Saskatoon Branch crews removed and re-installed just under 21,000 square feet of roofing on 32 separate roof levels including 14 dormers on the Williams Building in Saskatoon recently.

The men took the existing ro o f down to the metal deck and re p l a c i n g it with a 2 ply felt, sloped insulation, 2 layers of Fiberboard, 4 Ply Felt and topped it off with ballast.

Complexities arose in some areas of the wooden deck causing anchoring system issues, but in the end the owner was quite happy with Flynn’s performance and the crew’s problem solving skills.

Once the trio started executing the cosmetic plan at the operating site, the nip tuck surgery process was substituted by their masterful snip and fold expertise with utmost precision.

With three elevations completed and the final one to go, the installed Accumet 2000 system provided a new look to the neighbourhood which is just what the doctor ordered.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE MOST IMPORTANT The newest foreman in the St John’s Branch, Ken Petersen took on his first project in his new role; a 10,000 square foot re-roof on the Cormack Building in the historic harbor front of St. John’s. It was a good test for Ken given the downtown location where access was truly a challenge. However Ken and his crew completed the job on time and within the budget. A great start for Ken! Way to go!

FINAL FRAME SHIPPED FOR A BIG DEAL EPCOR The AGS facility in Vaughan has been manufacturing unitized curtain wall frames for the new EPCOR office tower in Edmonton since July 2009. The project awarded to the Edmonton Branch earlier that year by Ledcor construction has been almost 2 years in the making as the final unitized frames were assembled and glazed.

The employees, foremen, supervisors and plant manager all celebrated the a c h i e ve m e nt with the hoisting of the last frame in the shop. Girish Kumar, Glazing Supervisor, and his team of dedicated workers produced all 4638 frames in approximately 43,000 man hours, and in doing so set new records for efficiency in the plant. The goals and targets were clear as the EPCOR project marked the first 'true' multi-story unitized high rise project ever assembled and glazed at AGS. EDMONTON BRANCH HARD AT WORK Edmonton branch’s Dave Luscombe and his crew battle through the freezing temperatures to install horizontal foam panels for the new maintenance building of ACFN (Athabasca Chipewyan First Nations) in Fort Mcmurray.

Installation of the horizontal foam panels started on-site in February 2011. Installation of approx. 14,000 Sq Ft of the flat embossed panels along with a small quantity of soffit cladding is anticipated to take approx 10 weeks.

P ro j e c t M a n a g e r G re g Stephen explained to Dave and his crew the importance of accurate setting out to ensure that all architectural details are achieved. Factory formed corners and recessed top hat vertical joints have also been s p e c i f i e d to enhance the look of the building.

COQUITLAM PUBLIC LIBRARY

Everyone that we worked with d u ri n g the summer was unfailingly helpful. You all warned us when the noise level might be high and kept the disruption as low as possible. All the arrangements for getting in during after hours worked well. The upshot is we have a wonderful new roof that DOESN’T LEAK for the first time in 20 years! General Contractor Task Construction approached the Vancouver Branch to undertake a metal re-roof and glazing project at the Coquitlam Public Library which had been experiencing a few water leaks for some time. The Branch’s experts in architectural, metal and glazing products teamed up with the Service Department and went to work. A number of people were involved in the project and contributed to its success. Perhaps, the best way to describe the end result was summarized by the Library Director who wrote;

NORTHERN STUDIES CENTRE WAY UP NORTH Winnipeg Bra n ch worked with General Contractor Penn Co. on the Churchill Nort h e rn Studies Centre; an i n d e p e n d e nt , non-profit research and education facility located 23 km east of Churchill, Manitoba along the Hudson Bay seacoast. In addition to re se a rch, the Centre facilitates a wide range of educational pro g r a m m i n g ranging from general interest courses for the visiting public to university credit courses for students.

The crew chosen to complete this project, lead by Foreman Robert Hogue, faced a variety of challenges daily such as frigid weather, high winds, very limited daylight hours and of course almost daily Polar Bear sightings near the job site and camp.

The newest member of the Crew is Silver, the Site’s Polar Bear Dog who shows no fear of the Polar Bears and warns the crew when a Polar Bear is coming and will do everything he can to scare them off and keep all crew members safe. While battling the elements, the crew has installed some 21,000 square feet of Accu-Steel metal roofing and more than 17,000 square feet in a metal siding application. For better logistics and results, both products, many with a curved radius, were fabricated onsite with a roll former which was stored in an old missile silo. Approximately 14,200 square feet of pre-insulated freezer panel was also installed under the building creating an insulated floor system.

CREWS PRAISED FOR WORK ON GULF ISLAND Each day Victoria Branch craftsmen, Glenn Bissett and Al Crowfoot, shown from left to right, travel to and from Gulf Island jobsites by ferry. Most jobs that they undertake are custom-built homes; each with their own special re q u i rements and homeowners that have very high expectations for workmanship.

The scope of work in this particular instance included a cedar shingle tear-off replaced with a standing seam metal roof on a total of 5 separate buildings, including a main house, three cottages and a garage.

The following was a letter sent to Victoria Branch Project Manager, Fred Cliff, by yet another satisfied customer, regarding the work ethic and professionalism of our two man “Gulf Island crew”.

“I am writing to share with you our pleasure with the new roofs installed at our home in Salt Spring Island this past summer by Glenn Bissett and Al Crowfoot. As you know, these new roofs went onto five separate buildings, each of which has a unique shape and design. I have to believe that this was not an easy job, but the end result is extre m e l y

pleasing to us. The workmanship and quality of the installation makes us feel we got full value for our investment.

And as you also know, although we found the cost estimate to be imposing at the outset, we are now at the end of the day satisfied customers. The credit surely belongs to Glenn and Al, along with your on-site equipment and processes. We were very impressed with Glenn and Al’s work, their friendly attitudes and easy communication, their obvious expertise and competence, their attention to detail, and the care they took to keep the site clean during all of the phases of the job.” Great job men!

MULTI-SCOPE PROJECT TO BE SHOWPIECE The Vancouver Branch worked with the City of Vancouver, DGS Construction Company Ltd. and DGBK Architects Ltd. to build the new expansion for the Vancouver Police Department Property & Forensic Storage Facility. This m u l t i - s c o p e project was awarded to Flynn and involved a collaborated effort for the scope of work that includes flat roofing, metal roofing and siding, Kingspan cladding as well as the Swiss Pearl cladding.

The project has been defined by its e x t remely tight schedule and Flynn crews have answered the call to complete this project in a professional way while meeting the needs of both the client and owner. Our ability to provide quality workmanship and products in a timely manner is second to none anywhere in the country.

The project is currently under way but promises to be a new Vancouver city landmark upon completion.

HYBRID SYSTEM FOR LANDMARK PROJECT IN NORTHERN B.C. The Vancouver Bra n ch partnered with Acciona Infrastructures /Stuart Olson Construction Ltd., and Cannon Architects to provide a hybrid curtain wall System that would both meet the esthetic requirements of the Owner and Architect; and the high performance requirements of the Northern B.C. climate.

This new Hospital & Residential Care facility will serve the residents of Fort St. John and it’s vast neighboring communities with both a state of the art Hospital; and a new Care Facility that promises to be unique in it’s design and function.

Flynn’s sales, design, and production teams have provided the client and end user with a curtainwall system that will perform within the requirements of the harsh Northern B.C. climate and look great doing it.

CONTROVERSY OVER THE U OF A HUB MALL Edmonton Branch Foreman James Moore and his crew recently completed a 99,000 square foot re-roof/new-roof at the University of Alberta. The project was unique in itself as it included replacing one of the longest skylights in Canada (4 city blocks long). Seven stories tall, HUB Mall houses over 50 shops, while the upper levels are home to nearly 1000 students in apartments overlooking a wide pedestrian walkway.

But controversy swirled around the new roof that has replaced the f o rm e r all-glass skylight completed in 1971, maintenance became a major issue with the skylight that leaked since its original installation.

Even a replacement skylight in the mid-80’s failed to hold water out.

Hence, the U of A is now replacing the entire length with a ‘cap’; a solid roof with windows under the eaves.

The metal crews also installed some cladding and architectural panels on the clerestory on the project. In mid December, the Victoria Bra n ch held a safety training day for members of our field staff. The meeting agenda included training in the safe use of equipment, PPE, fall protection and the understanding of WHMIS controls and procedures.
