PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I am deeply saddened to share that on May 21st, there was an accident on one of our jobsites that ended in the worst possible result. You should hear from me – not anyone from outside the company – what happened. One of our veteran Architectural Panel crews in Toronto suffered catastrophic misfortune. The elevated work platform that two crew members from our Toronto branch were working on toppled. One of our own, Nelson Ferreira – was pronounced deceased at the scene. In the man lift with Nelson was Joaquim Moreira, who colleagues and friends know as “Peta.” Peta has undergone many hours of surgery, and although he recently has shown positive progress, he has a lengthy recovery ahead of him. This was a devastating day for our Flynn family, and only further reinforces why safety is, and will continue to remain, our top priority. We will do everything we can to learn from this and share the lessons learned with those in the company and the industry. There has been an outpouring of love and support from all corners of the company for the families of Nelson and Peta as they deal with this tragedy. Many people have inquired as to how they can assist the families. In response to that outpouring, a note from our Human Resources Department explaining how you can assist the families if you choose to do so, can be found on page 9. Please join me in extending our heartfelt thoughts to the families of Nelson and Peta during this time of healing. Until next time, take care.

KC IS NOW HERE TO SERVE Flynn Midwest recently established their new Roofing Service Department, following the Flynn Group of Companies model. Managed by Will Pierce with the aid of Nick Markley, the team is made up of 11 Roofers, Glaziers, and Sheet Metal Workers who have years of experience with the company. Pierce has been a Project Manager for the company for 13 years prior to taking on this new position. According to him, the servicemen are embracing their new roles, “They love the structure, the trucks, the uniforms, and are just happy with the change.”

FIRST FUSE IN THE US Congratulations to members of our Baltimore, Kansas City, Springfield, Flagstaff and Phoenix branches who recently completed the very 1st U.S. Flynn University for Service Excellence held at Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City. This two‑day leadership program is designed specifically for the leaders (and future leaders) of our field operations. PROMISING A BUSY YEAR AHEAD Flynn Midwest in Kansas City has been awarded two major new construction projects: Cerner Three Trails and The University of Kansas Hospital – North Cambridge Tower.

This hospital extension will add another 120 beds and 12 operating rooms to the hospital, as well as expand the neuroscience and surgical oncology departments, creating over 600 new healthcare jobs. “I am extremely proud of our project teams. They took these immense potential projects and turned them into a reality. The dedication of these men and women, who very often came to work early and stayed late past sunset, gave the general contractor, architects, and owners what they wanted and deserved,” says Jerry Schaefer, Senior Vice President. Cerner Three Trails will be the third campus project that Flynn has worked on with general contractor J.E. Dunn. Last year, they finished the Cerner Continuous Campus, constructing the entire building envelope. The new development for the healthcare company is 290 acres in Kansas City, Missouri and will house over 15,000 new employees when the campus is completed. Flynn has been given the architectural metal and glazing scopes for the first two buildings, and hopes to land the roofing scope, which will bid later this year. Also, having worked for the University of Kansas Hospital campus in the past, Flynn Midwest will be responsible for the

The new KCPD East Patrol Campus in Kansas City, Missouri will feature a police division and evidence repository. Flynn Midwest’s scope of work includes 10,000 sq. ft. of Firestone Delta Series wall panels as an exterior rainscreen cladding system, over Knightwall FMI-S Series clip and rail system with 3˝ Roxul CavityRock. Additionally, we fabricated and installed approximately 7,500 sq. ft. of 4mm Alcoa Reynobond ACM fascia and soffit cladding in various locations on the building façade, as well as miscellaneous roof related flashings, conductor heads, and round downspouts.

4800 Main is international architecture firm Populous’ new residence in Kansas City. Flynn Midwest is working on the metal and glazing scopes, as well as roof repair, on the preexisting building. We were able to snap a few photos of our busy crew members.

AN INTRODUCTION TO FLYNN MID-ATLANTIC Flynn Mid-Atlantic (dba Flynn Control Roofing & Sheet Metal) in Linthicum, Maryland is our newest addition to Flynn Group of Companies. They specialize in roofing, as well as architectural sheet metal fabrication and installation. Operating within a vast 200-mile radius of the Baltimore George Hnat and Washington, D.C. Branch Manager of Flynn Mid-Atlantic metropolitan areas, the company has the ability to travel and get large projects completed. An example of this is a new roof at the US Embassy in Kampala, Uganda in 2001.

We are so excited to have them join our expanding team. We have added a Service Department and in the future will be able to provide the total building envelope to all of our customers in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Branch Manager, George Hnat, started Control Roofing in 2000 with three others and became sole Shareholder in 2009 before partnering with Flynn. “I was looking for a company that had similar values and culture. I needed to know that the acquisition would be growth oriented and also ensure the best possible future for my dedicated employees,” says George.

FRIENDSHIP ANIMAL HOSPITAL ■■Submitted by George Hnat

For over 50 years, Friendship Hospital for Animals has been one of the top medical facilities for dogs and cats in the Washington D.C. area. When the hospital ran out of space, they built an additional floor atop the existing structure. Our crew is installing the wall cladding and rooftop mech equip screen wall. We also installed a white EPDM (cool) roof and added a partial green roof with a special fenced-in

section with K9 grass for the canine patients. A screen wall has planters below each section with climbing vines that will eventually grow over the screen wall. Overall, our goal is to give a pleasant outdoor appearance for when they bring the dogs for exercise in the K9 grass area with an environmentally friendly rooftop.

INTRODUCING REBECCA WELSH We are pleased to announce that Rebecca Welsh has joined Flynn as Branch Manager in our Springfield, Missouri office. Rebecca comes with an abundance of knowledge and experience in the industry, having spent the last ten years at DeWitt & Associates where she was Project Manager for many large jobs such as Missouri State University and St. John’s Tornado Recovery in Joplin. Rebecca was most drawn to Flynn’s capabilities as a total building envelope contractor and is eager to educate the Springfield community on the quality work that Flynn’s skilled craftspeople produce. The Hospice Center Stellar Maris in Baltimore was in need of a new roof. After the tear-off, the Baltimore team used cold process low VOC materials, so as not to create any potential air quality issues. The new roof installation consisted of Garland 3-ply with white gravel.

This is our first project as Flynn Southwest in the Phoenix area! We are currently installing 540 sq. ft. of insulation, underlayment, and metal roofing on a temporary lodging facility for the US Air Force pilots of Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona.

The crew is currently removing the existing copper panels for the gated community Forest Highlands. For this reroof, they are installing a new standing copper roof, panels, and fascia.

Aspen Place at The Sawmill is a five-story multiuse building for residential apartments and retail space. The new complex consist of 300 squares of asphalt shingles, 200 squares of built-up roof, and 50 squares of metal.

This required a 2-Ply Modified roof which was completed for Traytown Builders.

Over the last two years, Flynn Moncton has done an increasing amount of work for JDI (Irving Group). The growth of the Architectural Division in Atlantic Canada, including the addition of the Moncton based Metals crews, has created the opportunity to secure our first New Brunswick based JDI (Irving) Cladding Project. Work was underway at Irving’s Lake Utopia Pulp Mill in southern New Brunswick. The job consisted of re-cladding of the existing walls as well as new extensions to the dry and wet ends of the mill.

Winter roofing is always an added challenge but even more so when you're talking about a 96,800 square foot warehouse addition at Master Packaging, a division of Irving’s Group of Companies. Our guys were up to the challenge and pushed through a record setting snowfall winter and spring. Flynn was able to stay well ahead of the projects schedule and it was

Our Moncton Metals Crew was hard at work at the new Quispamsis K-5 school. The full metal cladding package consisted of 23,500 sq. of Insulation/Girts/Cladding. The cladding is set to be a major focal point of the school due to the extensive use of multiple vibrant colors. The crew wrapped up on site in late spring, well in time for the schools slated fall opening.

FLYNN REELS IN A BIG ONE ■■Submitted by Kyle Kennedy

Flynn angled in the contract for a 72,500 square foot re-roof to accommodate the moving in of North America’s leading outdoor box store Bass Pro Shop. The guys pushed through the harshest conditions including a total winter snow fall of over 380cm. (As Monctonians we honestly wish we were kidding about that). The crew has received high praise from the General Contractors on this job.

Our roofing crew has been working relentlessly on an addition to L’Ecole Secondaire du Sommet to house their new Skilled Trades Program. This was a 53 Square two-ply mod bit torched down application. Flynn did the roofing and the metal siding on the original school back in 2010 and we were asked to come back to complete the Skilled Trades Addition as well. Maybe some of our future start employees will get their training here!

AMAZON SNOW REMOVAL ■■Submitted by Archie Tantlinger

In order to keep functioning, Amazon needed its data center to keep moving and that meant ridding the rooftop of snow. Flynn Mid-Atlantic responded to their need and cleared 120,000 sq. ft. of the data center. In the past two years, Flynn Mid-Atlantic has cleared two other Amazon data centers of snow – one 200,000 sq. ft. building and one 110,000 sq. ft. building. Before

The Carlton School Board Crystal Bay Learning Centre consisted of ripping the 24 square BUR conventional roof system down to the 2‑ply vapor barrier. Donovan Conlon, Adam Cooper, Jason Smith, Eric Schultz, Reuben and Denis Lauzon installed a new elastophene sanded vapor barrier in order to keep the roof waterproof for Spring.

With General Contractor EllisDon Construction, this re‑roofing project had to be cleared of snow and ice before it began. It was 87 squares of 2-ply mod‑bit, torch. Crews had to be doubled to adhere to a tight project schedule with a firm completion date. It was additional work to an existing contract that was awarded only if project schedules could be met.

THE BERGERON CENTRE FOR ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE – YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO

For this project currently underway, Flynn is the Total Building Envelope Contractor. The complex geometry and complicated interfaces on this project predominantly demanded thinking outside the box. Flynn’s Design Team met all the necessary requirements; a cladding contractor with technical expertise, experience, and resources to overcome the challenges of this landmark project. The new facility, which is due to open its doors in September 2015, is well on the way from being transformed from vision to reality.

Designed by the architectural team of Snøhetta & Zeidler, the stunning new building provides Ryerson students with an outstanding environment to study, collaborate and discover. The eight-storey Student Learning Centre marks Ryerson’s new face on Yonge Street. It features a glass façade, an elevated plaza, a bridge to the existing library and a range of academic, study and collaborative spaces for Ryerson’s students, faculty and staff. Yonge Street frontage will feature destination retail at and below grade, creating a prominent commercial façade. The triple glazed transparent glass skin of the 155,000 squarefoot Student Learning Centre features a surface design consisting of a unique glass digital frit pattern that creates varying light

qualities within the interior space. A Flynn custom unitized curtain wall system 52,000 sq. ft. was designed for the project, the curtain wall was engineered and tested to accommodate the complex varying façade tilt angles and sloped skylights including an integrated mullion detail to accommodate interior mechanical sun shading. The unique glass frit pattern was required to transition onto the adjoining aluminum panel at the North elevation and Flynn, working with a specialist supplier, achieved this effectively through perforating the pattern into the metal panel, 22,000 sq. ft. Another distinctive, unique and complex feature of the building is the custom blue faceted dome ceiling and soffit designed and

The initial intent was for a ceramic blue tile, however working with Snøhetta/Zeidler at the early design stage, Flynn’s Business Development technical advisers put forward a number of panel mockups and material alternatives. Flynn’s Accumet System comprising of lightweight Alpolic-FR (Fire Rated) Prismatic finish ACM in a custom color was the final choice. The ceiling needed to be light weight, meet fire code and also accommodate the unique triangular multifaceted shape and enable cutouts to accommodate mineral fiber acoustic in-fills while maintaining panel integrity and stability, in total 4,448 Blue Panels.

Offsite construction, detailing and execution of the envelope scopes as an integrated entity was paramount to the performance and æsthetic for this project and a Flynn Total Envelope proposal was chosen. Glazing & panels were modeled in 3D software using INVENTOR. Flynn completed the total envelope including the roofing and green roof of 27,000 sq. ft. Notwithstanding the complexities as outlined above, this was a very restricted site at one of the busiest locations in downtown Toronto where safety was the top priority and logistics were very challenging. The result – an iconic landmark, due to the architectural uniqueness of Snøhetta & Zeidler’s design and Flynn’s design, engineering and attention to detail and workmanship of Flynn’s glazing, metals and roofing trades. The general contractor was EllisDon. With many challenges comes rewards, and on April 15th, the Ryerson University Student Learning Centre won OGMA (Ontario Glass and Metal Association) Awards of Excellence in Execution in Metals and Glass by our industry peers, which was accepted by Michael Roche. Two crews have teamed up with Victor Medeiros and Carlos Costa to complete the St. Joseph’s Healthcare King Campus in East Hamilton; a project valued at 1.1 million dollars. The winter conditions made it tough to maintain the customers deadline; however, the crews managed and stayed on pace to meet the expectations of a March 31, 2015 completion date on this 44,000 sq. ft. multilevel BUR pitch roof removal and going back with a very complex multi-layer Polyiso and tapered system covered with a 2-ply modified Soprema membrane from Peto MacCallum Ltd.

The new Canadian Tire will be one of the biggest of its kind within Canada. At 1330 squares, with multiple levels, this impressive new building will surely be a one-of-a-kind Canadian Tire and a preferred choice for all customers in the South Edmonton area. Flynn Saskatoon was called by the Parktown Hotel to look after another large ice formation 50 to 60 feet in height from a broken water line that ran all night. Mobilization was done within 24 hours as with warmer temperatures coming in, there was fear of the ice collapsing. The next morning, a steam truck with 1000 gallons of hot water and an 80 lift was dispatched to site to bring the giant. The Foreman on site was Grant Greba.

This is the second contract Flynn Industrial Ltd. has picked up for Kearl Lake (KFTT) working on finishing site completions (PIR panels, gutters/downspouts, and penetrations) for module constructed in the Mod Yard with Kiewit for Imperial Oil. The crew has done such an amazing job that they helped get awarded two storage tanks to construct onsite that are 56 meters in diameter!

The original Shaw Court building was built approximately 28 years ago. In 2012, there was a fire in the generator room, which resulted in extensive flooding in the building. Flynn won the full envelope contract with Stuart Olson incorporating metal, glazing, and roofing as a synergy project. Flynn started on site in March 2014 and completed the project in April 2015. The building, from top to bottom, consists of 10,000 sq. ft. of Corten 1 composite panels, 12,000 sq. ft. of Levolux louver screens, 16,000 sq. ft. of green roofs surrounded by glass balustrade wind screen. The main entrance is enclosed by Novem suspension glazing with 7,000 sq. ft. of Zahner solanum and 2,500 sq. ft. of phenolic panel features around the main doors. The front entry contains Stanley revolving

Four of Calgary’s skilled service men were tasked with installing 350 sq. ft. of cold applied SBS roof at Delta +15 located in downtown Calgary. The site is a high safety environment and the crews did an excellent job of adhering to the safety requirements. This project was undertaken with the City of Edmonton, and safety and scheduling were very critical on this job. With the high school just a stone’s throw away, and the general public near the vicinity, the crew had to make sure the site was properly secured at all times and safety was top notch. The crew consisted of Rob Albert (Foreman), James Mcgee, Essa Treish, Corey Primeau, Shane Cornelius and Barkovskis Viaceaslavas, Jr. Crew safety was impeccable and coordination within the labour budget allocated and within schedule. The city was very impressed with the professionalism displayed by the crew during the life of the project. Roofing system: Remove roof to expose metal deck, torch new VB, adhere insulation in Duotack, torch base protection board, torch cap.

For the Saskatoon Inn, Flynn is the General Contractor. This 400 square project involved the removal of existing SBS roof Flynn completed 15 yrs. ago replaced with new SBS. The stair scaffold was required due to mansard roof surrounding the entire building. Guardrails were not required as the parapet height met the requirements. Crews continue to work around the hotel’s schedule as they had certain days during the week in which they were not allowed to work due to the noise it caused. They came to an agreement that they would never rip roof on those “shutdown days”; however, tried to get some insulating and membrane complete or cap sheet as this was a quieter task. It's been difficult juggling activities each day for the men, but they are staying on track and progressing!

EDMONTON Flynn production has been working on the Women's Hospital redevelopment project since the summer of 2014. Since the job started, there have been several different crews working on the multi-level building, applying mainly a modified-bituminous membrane roofing system. The crew communicated very well with each other, as well as with other trades working in close proximity. We commend Elkin and the crew for maintaining a safe jobsite, as well as having all safety documentation and paper work in check.

Crews replaced the substandard and leaking metal roof of an existing apartment building in downtown Edmonton with a more appropriate ARCA warrantied roof system. The installation was made particularly challenging by the 12:12 pitch of the roof along with the complex architectural design. The 12-story building, which contains 69 occupied apartments, is accessed by mast-climbers platforms and a complicated scaffold system.

Foreman Derek Saindon and his team are undertaking the installation of wall and soffit cladding, roof deck, internal fire rated walls, and main doors on 25 modular buildings at the Ledcor Mod Yard, Edmonton. One of the challenges is meeting an extremely tight schedule. Once complete, each modular building is transported by road to its final destination at the K + S site in Saskatchewan. Due to the weight of each building, there are only certain periods of the year when these can be transported.

MEC – ANOTHER FLYNN SUCCESS Flynn Vancouver has another project to be proud of. Located just outside Vancouver’s downtown core, Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC) head office was a project that combined practical and effective installation with cooperative efforts of multiple Flynn scopes.

Faced with challenges ranging from the elements to access, the Flynn team overcame every hurdle in its path to install quality, finished products. Led by Robert Reynolds, Dan Henning and Kris Lemire, Flynn Glazing performed admirably on this project with an exterior scope that included curtain wall and guardrails. Equally impressive was the team’s execution of an atypical interior glazing package that included back painted glass, magnetic glass boards, all-glass doors, and TVS glazing. Great job guys! Our Architectural Panels division performed equally as well. Led by veteran Foreman Bryce Young, panel crews turned the MEC project into an exercise of precision installation and seamless integration of systems. Here, the visual end product speaks for itself, where interlocking hidden fastener wall panels, standing seam panels, steel decking, Swisspearl, and ‘Oko skin’ wood finished panels blend together to create a modern and quintessentially “West Coast” look. Truly impressive - well done team!

The Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver is considered one of the jewels of Vancouver’s history. It was Vancouver’s largest vaudeville movie palace from the first half of the 20th century and is the only one of its scale in Vancouver to survive. The building is located in the heart of the downtown district and presented multiple setup and access issues. Minimal site storage, multiple roof levels, and snarling downtown traffic for hours at a time while loading/downloading had its challenges for our crew. Thanks guys for a job well done! MEDICINE HAT REGIONAL HOSPITAL

Start with 27,880 feet of extrusions; 12,302 feet of gaskets; 32,391 screws; 10 trailer loads; and 242 frames as the main ingredients needed to complete this project. Throw in the expertise of three branches (Edmonton led by Tamer Rouby, NFL via Jeremy Lian, and the team of Vancouver) and Flynn’s got the makings of a successful venture. These three teams worked in collaboration to achieve a common goal – to manufacture and install products that were done safely, with the best quality, complete and on time. Of course no jobs come without challenges, but with relentless planning, positive “arguments”, and weekly checks and balances, the glitches were met with solutions and lessons learned. The constant communication led by Vancouver’s Igor Radvan pre-empted a lot of potential show stoppers while Sandro Simicic quarterbacked the fabrication to ensure promised dates were met. Justin Edmiston was able to “grind down” a deal with a trucking service that was efficient and respectful to deal with. On the floor, Kevin Martel kept an eye on quality until his eyes turned red.

The feedback from Tamer Rouby was that Flynn was the “Prime Star” of the job and the owners will highly recommend Flynn for other projects. The building envelope consultant was satisfied with the quality and cooperation on site. Unlike other trades, our site glazing team will not incur any back charges. Feedback that certainly makes everyone involved very proud. Flynn Vancouver continues to build and thrive, thanks in no small part to the growing experience and expertise of its Trim Shop. For the past 11 years, the shop has acted as an anchor for Vancouver field forces for all scopes; providing flashing, girts, snap-lock panels, backpans, roll-forming, and custom orders of every shape, size, and material. Led by the same Foremen since day one of operations, Rav Sandhu has worked tirelessly to build, train, and mentor his team. Management has supported the shop with new breaks, shears, and technology, and the team is adapting and flourishing while taking on the new challenges the Lower Mainland construction has to offer. Along with Bird Construction, Flynn recently completed the new Student Union Building at the University of British Columbia. The project consisted of 100,000 sq. ft. of roofing on 22 different roofs composed of a white SRI 2-ply bituminous membrane, waterproofing, and damp proofing. This project had its challenges, as it was phased construction with a very aggressive schedule of completion, including limited access due to construction and pedestrian traffic. TOUCHDOWN AT YVR AIRSIDE OPERATIONS BUILDING ■■Submitted by Benjamin Hayes

The Vancouver Branch was chosen by General Contractor Graham Construction & Engineering, Inc. for this exciting multi-scope project at the Vancouver Airport. It consisted of three buildings located in the middle of the airport taxiways for everyone to see who passes through the airport. This new facility will replace the existing fire hall and maintenance building. The project was a great example of what Flynn is all about.

There’s over 70,000 sq. ft. of metal cladding and accumet panel with a feature wall that has curved panels and a custom gutter system. It also includes custom interior and exterior door surrounds, architectural louvers, exterior curtain wall, skylights, interior storefront, glass guardrails, and custom sunshades. The project schedule was demanding and require a large crew to complete, which was led by Stelios Papanicolaou, Aaron Andrews, Pat Lodge, Dave Sheridan, Ciaran Brenan, Kyle Wakely, Tim Schlinkmann, Flaviano Managuelod, Michael Hayes, Corey Brewer, Colin Nagle, Jordy Neilson, Josh Brown, Kevin Peck and Christian Stockley. It was an excellent display of our safety and quality!

NAV CANADA PENTICTON AIRPORT TOWER ■■Submitted by Chris Sitter

TJ Vandale and his crew successfully completed a 1200 sq. ft. re-roof of the Penticton airport control tower. The project involved removal of existing system and installing a new roof assembly consisting of densdeck, SBS vapour barrier, two layers of poly ISO, densdeck cover board, two plies of SBS membrane and new sheet metal flashing. On top of the roofing scope TJ and his team also installed a new, engineered structural steel perimeter guardrail system, a new emergency access door, a new access hatch complete with structural steel supports, and a new ceiling mounted attic access ladder. The guys really showed that not only are they excellent roofers, but they are excellent all around tradesmen. Way to go team!

THE LEXINGTON PHASE 2

Justyn Barber and Don Gaff worked as a team to complete Phase 2 of a tile repair job at The Lexington. The project involved removing ridge caps, installing self-adhered membrane, and re-installing the ridge caps. Barber and Gaff were able to successfully complete this project despite having to demobilize and remobilize several times to attend to leak calls and other service projects. Good work boys!

KELOWNA

The Vancouver roofing department was awarded the re-roof project at Rogers Communications. The building is the home of City TV Vancouver, SportsNet West, and Onni Television – where news, sports, etc. are aired live throughout the day. The project consists of a complete demolition of the existing 19,800 sq. ft. roof and installation of a new Soprema 2-ply Colply ballasted system. This project has been one of the toughest roofing projects completed in recent history in Vancouver, due to the amount of equipment on the roof, as well as having a strict window of work from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Ken Nguyen and crew have done an excellent job in keeping disruption to Rogers Inc. staff to a very minimum, as well as putting a valiant effort in working weekends and holidays, all in an effort to getting the job complete on schedule. ROOFING IN NANAIMO ■■Submitted by Gary Stride

This Victoria crew is working in Nanaimo, about 100 km north of Victoria, at the new BC Hydro Operations Centre. Construction of this building meets the “Post Disaster Requirements” of the BC Building Code. Restoring and maintaining electricity after an emergency is a high priority for Emergency Management. “Post Disaster Requirement” compliance mandates that the resistance to seismically induced strain is increased to 1.5 times and the roof fastening requirements are increased to 1.25 times the Building Code. The roof deck of this Operations Centre is of “Nail-lam” construction; 2” x 6” dimensional lumber laid on edge spanning over OWSJ and wide flange beams. If all of the boards that were used in this roof were placed end-to-end, they would span 76 miles!

A Victoria crew led by Wahib Othman and Sean Williams travelled to 100 Mile House for some roofing and metal work on the local Safeway. 100 Mile House is in the South Cariboo on the Cariboo Highway, midway between Kamloops and Prince George. Our work here involved the removal and replacement of the front canopy, removal of cedar shakes, application of waterproofing, and a standing seam roof.

CAMOSUN COLLEGE TRADES CENTRE ■■Submitted by Gary Stride

Camosun College is the largest Community College on Vancouver Island. Two separate campuses serve almost 20,000 students in both academic and trades training. The Camosun College Trades Centre has been developed to address the predicted trades shortages in Western Canada. This centre will house the training facilities for the revitalized shipbuilding industry in Canada, including marine and metal trades and heavy-duty automotive mechanical repair training. This LEED project will be constructed to the Gold Environmental Standard. Our scope of work on this 80,000 sq. ft. project includes Kingspan panels, metal roofing, siding, glazing, and flat roofing. Foreman Shawn Mason and crew are currently installing the Kingspan panels.

BUILDING DY250 CFB ESQUIMALT ■■Submitted by Gary Stride

VICTORIA

Building DY250 is the major physical component of the Fleet Maintenance Facility Shop Consolidation Project for the Maritime Forces Pacific at CFB Esquimalt. This facility is a strategic naval asset that supports the Canadian Pacific Fleet. With a footprint covering the area of seven football fields, it is reportedly the second largest building on the west coast of North America (the Boeing plant in Everett, Washington is the largest). 1,091 civilians work in this building alongside 156 military members.

Flynn’s crews (roofing, metal, and glazing) have been working on the renovations and expansion on the existing structure. Mike Pilling and his crew have been removing and installing new cladding, vapour barrier, and insulation on this current phase of the project.

The naval base was first opened in 1842. Many of the existing shops on the base are over 100 years old, built with bricks that the early sailing ships used as ballast. Once complete in 2018, Building DY250 will incorporate most of the shops that are currently scattered throughout the base in the antiquated buildings. In the planning stages since 1977, DY250 will house the maintenance, fabrication, testing and diagnostics of the navigational, communications, operations, and weapons systems used by the Royal Canadian Navy. A limited amount of R & D is routinely carried out here for the Army and Air Force, as well.

EVERGREEN RAPID TRANSIT ■■Submitted by John Ngo

Flynn Vancouver is happy to be working with SLCW for the design assist and construction of the new Evergreen rapid transit system spanning three cities, 12 buildings, and three scopes of work (glazing, metals, and roofing). The project consists of point fixed fittings, storefront glazing, guardrails, canopies, doors, smoke baffles, faregate barriers, composite panels, metal flashings, snow guards, standing seams, and Kalzip.

With these stations having small footprints and difficult access, the construction team had to come up with innovative ways to get the products on the wall, such as creating a custom rail cart to transport our Jekko crane and glass racks along the tracks, and building a 30 ft. high scaffold structure to support our 20’ x 8’ Kalzip machine all the way from Germany in order to run our metal roof panels (as long as 160 ft.) directly onto the roof.

The Service Department was tasked with installation of all TPO and Latchway fall protection products. With a project awarded based on 50 per cent drawings, the Project Management team (John Ngo – Project Manager, Denise Francisco and Charles Thurlow – Project Coordinators) was faced with many challenges from the beginning, such as trying to maintain budget with constant design changes on a daily basis, as well as keeping up with the demands of the client’s multiple construction teams. Access was, and is, the biggest challenge on this project thus far. There is a station tied to an existing running station, as well as several stations

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of JP Schmidt, Ryan Young, Billy Yorke (Glazing, Metals & Service Superintendent), Brett Templeman and Stuart Kent (Glazing Foremen), and Bryce Young (Metals Foreman) for thinking outside the box, with which we were able to overcome all the obstacles. With the new 3D surveying technology, we were able to measure, layout, and order glass and metal panels without the need to bring out the tape measure or go on a man lift. We could save time, money, and be accurate to the millimetre. The project is 25 per cent complete and will run until the end of 2015.

VEE MANIFOLD The Vee Manifold from RoofTop Equipment is an improved dispenser for low rise foam adhesive. Its patented design allows a smooth flow of material through the manifold and prevents clogging. Unlike the conventional aluminum block manifolds the Vee Manifold does not require applications of lithium grease to prevent clogging and material will still flow freely after sitting for several days. In the event that the manifold does become blocked it can be easily cleared using an included drill bit. This manifold is compatible with all of the bulk dispensers that Flynn owns, both bag in box and drums.

Camp Barnard is located in Otter Point, just west of Sooke on Vancouver Island and is a 250 acre camp used year round by a variety of youth and adult organizations. Camp Barnard has been providing a nurturing environment for people to learn new skills and experience nature for more than 70 years.

Last year Flynn Vancouver was visited by the US Border Services, the Washington State Patrol, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, and the Delta and Surrey RCMP. No, it’s not what you think! Administrator Linda Candelaria was approached by the group and asked if our branch would be willing to allow them to use our yard and shop for their K9 Unit training. The Vancouver facility is close to the border crossings and was perfect for what they need. It had enough obstacles, nooks and crannies, and high and low platforms that would allow the dogs to get their training and exercise. Although we were not able to witness some of the drills, we’re sure it would have been very interesting. The official yet cuddly canines sit proud with their partners in the photo below.

When asked to participate in a charity event the Victoria branch was one of several companies who welcomed the task. Flynn provided labour and some material to re-roof their bathroom facility. Our team on the project was as follows: Ken Littleproud (Superintendent), Shawn Mason (Foreman), Matt Fisher (Foreman), Grant Schwabe (Foreman), James Michalski (Apprentice), Austin Hiebert (Apprentice) and Joshua Ketola (Labourer). COLORADO YOUTH OUTDOORS EVENT Flynn Southwest recently sponsored a Colorado Youth Outdoors’ (CYO) event in Loveland, Colorado. The CYO encourages families to spend time together outdoors with programs such as The Maverick featuring sporting clay shoot tournaments. Flynn Southwest Director of Operations Matt Behmer and Flynn Midwest VP–Roofing Operations Mike Pierce joined The Maverick for a weekend in support of CYO. Great job!

If you’ve ever had a malfunction with your below-the-hook vacuum lifter and spent hours, even days trying to troubleshoot the problem, keep your chin up; help is on the way! Wood’s Powr-Grip offers a Two Day Vacuum Lifter Troubleshooting and Repair Workshop biannually to all who are interested. The purpose of the workshop is to inform, educate and equip end‑users with the knowledge necessary to diagnose and repair vacuum lifters that may not be functioning to their optimum capability. Attendees spend time in a classroom situation learning how a vacuum system functions, followed by handson experience in troubleshooting and repairing a vacuum lifter.

Six employees from Flynn Vancouver made the trip down to Montana “The Treasure State”, to take the much anticipated, Wood’s Powr-Grip troubleshoot and repair workshop. To say the visit was a success would be understating the whole experience. The Woods’ “family” were so welcoming. We were made to feel like part of the “family” from the minute we walked in the front door. We also received a personal tour of the factory learning all the process involved in the manufacturing of Wood’s products. Right from the 3” T-handle cup all the way up to the custom made remote controlled counter-balanced 2800 lbs capacity powr-grip cup. We learned that on top of the two courses they run each year, if you have a class of at least six you can get your very own course tailored to your own requirements. We would highly recommend more Flynn branches use this service and keep their power cups certified and in great working order.

FLYNN SAFETY FIRST AID TRAINING SAVES LIFE It was just another Friday for Metals Foreman Denis Sigouin and colleague Ben Bontemps who were working on the Ottawa Light Rail Transit. The OLRT project currently has a number of different trades actively working together to complete their scope of work on the project. It was on this day, when Denis and Ben were faced with the unexpected opportunity to practice their First Aid Training. Denis and Ben were working alongside a carpenter who was cutting 2 x 4 piece of wood standing up. The worker was using a skill saw to cut the wood when all of a sudden, it kicked back and cut the worker's upper-leg area above the knee. At the time of this incident, Denis and Ben knew they had to do something to help out their fellow worker. They grabbed their first aid supplies and applied pressure to the wound while attempting to close the wound as best they could. They both helped to wrap the injured workers leg using compression techniques to be able to reduce the amount of blood release. Both Flynn workers helped to carry the injured worker to a man lift so that he was ready for the ambulance once it arrived on site. Denis and Ben waited for the ambulance to come so that they knew their fellow worker would be in good hands. Both Denis and Ben should be proud that they were able to use their skills and knowledge from their first aid training to help out a fellow worker. A special “Thank You” email soon followed: Good Morning Doug, I am emailing you this morning full of pride and thankful for the mindset and culture you have instilled in your company with regards to Health and Safety. Yesterday at the OLRT site in Ottawa there was a serious incident involving a worker from another trade. Two members of your team in Ottawa were witness to the accident and jumped into action. Through all of the training and education that Flynn has provided their team, they acted safely, calmly and effectively, administering first aid until the paramedics arrived. I had the opportunity to speak with a gentlemen from our industry who was witness to the efforts of your team and he could not tell me enough how impressed he was with how they took charge and kept the situation under control. It is very comforting to know that when my husband goes to work every day he has this training and knowledge to put all odds on his side to ensure that he and his team go home to their loved ones. As well, I am certain that the trades that were witness to your team yesterday are confident that when they are on the same job site as Flynn they have competent, educated, safety aware comrades on site with them. I respect your company’s efforts to raise awareness and educate all of your team where Health and Safety is concerned and the role that it plays in our day to day work routines. You have set a standard that is paramount and it was clearly evident yesterday. Congratulations to the entire Flynn family for once again setting a high standard of excellence and awareness. SCARY SLIP Manny Bandeira and Jorge Da Silva were working on the canopy in Brampton, Ontario and witnessed an elderly man slip and fall on some ice on the road and suffer a few nasty gashes. Manny and Jorge stopped what they were doing and went over to tend to the

man, called 911, and carried him over to his apartment complex a few blocks away. They stayed with him until the emergency services showed up and the man thanked them for their assistance. Their photos can be seen in the Safety Star section on our back page.
