When things are slow in a certain region, most of our competitors have no option but to shrink their workforce and wait for the next cycle. We have the advantage of moving

people and crews from one region to another to respond to workload peaks. In fact, we have moved more crews from region to region this year than ever before.

Take the Convention Centre and Speed Skating Oval projects in Vancouver for example; both are extraordinary projects with multiple scopes of construction that resulted in a peak in that region. At one point, we moved over 30 workers into that region from other parts of the company that were positioned to assist. This benefited these projects by giving them a boost in production and also assisted the lending branch offices by providing many hours for some of its key people. That is a win-win for the company and employees that equates to a major advantage.

So, don’t be surprised if your Superintendent asks you at some point if you would like to volunteer to temporarily help out in another region. It is not only a good way to boost your hours, but it is an interesting way to see other parts of the country.

Why have the Production and Estimating Committees been combined?

In preparing for the "kick-off" of the two separate committees we found that: ● There is no "natural" division between the two groups. In fact there are many objectives and opportunities they have in common. ● Improving communication, collaboration and integration between Production and Estimating will yield significant benefits and opportunities for improvement. ● The unique perspectives of Production and Estimating combined, give us a richer insight into how we can improve internal and external customer service and develop and share best practices.

What is the mandate of the OpEx Team?

The OpEx Team is charged with focusing their attention on the goals that were identified in the workshop as well as identifying and sharing best practices, lessons learned and new opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement. They have developed a team mission statement which is: "To efficiently, effectively and professionally satisfy the needs of all of our internal and external customers.

Can anyone suggest future focus areas that could be goals?

Absolutely! This is a marathon, not a sprint. The OpEx Team will not be restricted to solely improving Estimating and Production, we expect the composition of the OpEx Team to evolve as the focus is expanded in the future.

How will the new processes or recommendations of the OpEx Team be implemented?

The Goal Teams will work with a large number of people across Flynn to ensure any recommendations are well researched and tested before becoming a 'best practice.' When appropriate, changes will be piloted in a test branch before being adopted company-wide.

JOINT HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEES FORMED FOR OFFICE As part of our ongoing commitment to safety we have established an office component in Toronto. As our office environment continues to expand so do the potential safety concerns that come with this growth. Due to this increase over the last few years we have seen the need to add an office component to the joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings. (The jobsite component has been in place for a number of years.)

Jay Munday and Tara Aldaya have volunteered to be your liaisons with the committees. They will meet with the field committee members to bring up any office-related issues should they arise. These meetings occur monthly. All safety concerns should be forwarded to Jay or Tara via phone/email/in-person.

Some of the things that may come up are: frayed extension cords, slippery conditions in the winter, violence in the workplace, emergency evacuation procedures, etc.

What is a joint health and safety committee?

Who is responsible for establishing a joint health and safety committee?

Employers are responsible for establishing workplace health and safety committees.

(Internal guidelines for our committees can be found in our safety manual pages 438–441.

Employers establish terms of reference applicable to the formation, structure and functioning of the committee. Such terms of reference must ensure: ● compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation ● effectiveness of the committee in meeting workplace specific needs ● widest possible employee involvement

A joint health and safety committee is a forum for bringing the internal responsibility system into practice.

The committee consists of labour and management representatives who meet on a regular basis to deal with health and safety issues. The advantage of a joint committee is that the in-depth practical knowledge of specific tasks (labour) is brought together with the larger overview of company policies and procedures (management). Another significant benefit is enhanced cooperation among all parts of the work force toward solving health and safety problems.

The North American Copper in Architecture Awards recognizes and promotes North American building projects for their outstanding use of architectural copper and copper alloys.The 2008 program showcases a wide range of projects, all of which highlight craftsmanship, attention to detail and architectural vision. Historically, copper has long been used because of its great natural beauty and finish, its performance and durability, and its long service life and recyclability.Today, copper remains a superior building material, adapted and utilized for a wide variety of contemporary and cutting edge applications.

As well, copper was a key component of the overall green strategy for the Museum. As well as using copper sheet that had been removed from the Parliament Buildings during their restoration on the interior, copper was chosen as a cladding material partly because of its exceptionally high recycled content.

For New Construction – The award goes to…THE CANADIAN WAR MUSEUM, OTTAWA The new Canadian War Museum is one of Canada’s most significant and striking museums. It is the first major building on a formerly abandoned section of downtown Ottawa, LaBreton Flats. Perhaps most striking is its physical form, utilizing only concrete, soil and vegetation and, of course, copper to physically manifest the theme of regeneration. It is evocative of the physical act of war and the horror and devastation that are its main components, but it also illustrates nature’s ability to regenerate and sooth the wounds that war opens.

The use of copper, both inside and out, was a choice that reflected this. Copper is a key element in contextualizing the Museum, allowing a

The architects of the project (Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Griffith Rankin Cook Architects in joint venture) as well as the installer of the copper roof and cladding (Flynn Canada Ltd.) have created a masterpiece of copper architecture, one that has already become a landmark among many others in Ottawa.Their work will now age over the years to the magnificent greenish-blue colour associated with mature copper. It will be another step in the evolution of the War Museum.

What a great compliment to Flynn! We have featured this project a few times in the past, but it continues to make news. Congratulations again to all who participated in its success!

THE QUARTERLY TASK SUBMISSION $200 WINNER As many who are in the metals and glazing trade may be aware, it is not allowed to carry any material larger than the size of the platform on an Aerial boom lift. Companies that rent these man-lifts do not carry any attachments or accessories that can accommodate the need to utilize the lift to assist with material hoisting as well. Genie, a major lift equipment manufacturer, has responded to this market need by coming up with what they refer to as a ‘panel cradle.’

The cradles are brackets that attach to the cage of the genie, and will support and secure glazing panels on to the side of the lift. This allows crews to hoist material with them as they travel up or across a wall.

The new method of detection could be vital in preventing an incident where a wheel may become loose or even worse, come flying off while driving on the road or at the shop. REPEAT WORK FOR CREWS AS PHASE 3 AT ENMAX PLACE RECEIVES NEW ROOF This phase is the third section of roof that Foreman Paul Leger has completed for Enmax. The existing structure had an old inverted roof system that required replacement. Prior to this, it was 80,000 square feet..

This time around the scope included more than 27,000 square feet of new roof. Crews installed a new system that included a Lastobond, peel and stick, Vapour Barrier, three inches of ISO loose laid insulation, primed and mechanically fastened Densdek, and finally an Elastophene Flam Torch Welded, as well as a Soprema Traffic Cap 560 sheet.

NEW CONTRACT AWARDS: EPCOR TOWER – ANOTHER COMBINED BRANCH EFFORT Flynn Architectural Products and Flynn Alberta (Edmonton) combined efforts to land a multi-million dollar glazing and metal contract for the new Epcor Office Tower, shown in the rendering at left.

Standing in the centre of the core of downtown Edmonton, the building will feature a unitized curtain wall system totally designed, engineered, manufactured and installed by Flynn personnel – in house.

Lockerbie & Hole were the client on yet another oil sands-related project for Flynn Industrial. Lockerbie & Hole have been on site since the summer of 2007 and will complete their portion of the facility by the end of the 2nd quarter of 2009. The $850 million capital project includes a new oil sands surface mine, associated extraction and upgrading facilities and a .5 kilometer bridge over the Athabasca River, which is a navigable waterway.

This project represented the first significant growth investment in the oil sands industry since the original Great Canadian Oil Sands operation commenced in 1967 and Syncrude Canada’s operation start-up in 1979.

This time Flynn Canada crews supplied and installed metal roof and wall cladding as well as foam wall panels totaling more than 180,000 square feet. Flynn’s project Foreman was Dave Luscombe and the Project Manager was Chris Grant.

The project incorporates a nice blend of metal cladding and architectural panels with 7/8” Corrugated cladding, in a grey tone, used for the majority of the walls. The application of Deep Black Accumet 2000 architectural panels used around the entrances is a nice touch and this is even further enhanced with Bright Red roof and wall cladding that highlight the clerestory portion of the structure.

The exterior membrane on this project was completed with a Sopraseal 1100 Stick on the walls, Lastobond Shield HT on the clerestory roof, subgrit spacers and a 3 inch thick DOW SM Type IV insulation over the membrane.

In an effort to raise more funds for the CDA, the Branch rented a dunk tank, and requested nominations from all branch employees to decide who would be selected in the Dunk Tank seat.

EMPLOYEE NEWS: HALIFAX LET’S NOT FORGET THE FLYNN HALIFAX METAL SHOP Tony Doucet, along with David Bowers and his son Shawne work diligently behind the scenes to bring both the Halifax and Moncton Branch all the top-notch formed metal products we use on our projects. Their work is instrumental in the crew’s efforts on site right across Atlantic Canada.
