OUR FIRST COMMUNITY COMMITMENT DONATION WINNERS! e have received a number of applications for Flynn’s Community Commitment Donation (CCD) and we would like to thank all those who have nominated a cause. Since this is a new initiative, we have a couple items we would like to mention for future nominations. The CCD will not be sponsoring individual fundraising efforts (i.e. marathons, bike-a-thons, etc.). This is because participants are collecting donations privately and generally in small amounts (i.e. $10, $20) and we do not want our donation to overshadow those equally valuable contributions. The CCD will also not be contributing to political or religious charities as donations are not meant to alienate individuals within the organization whose views are different. FIRST STEP WELLNESS CENTRE (FSWC)

FSWC is based in Regina, Saskatchewan and was nominated by Scott Kadash, a Regina branch field employee. The spinal cord injury community has been demanding an exercise facility that not only specializes in spinal cord injury training methods, but is also locally accessible and affordable. FSWC will meet these needs by working as a non-profit organization which aims to improve the quality of life for those living with a spinal cord injury through the integration of exercise-based recovery methods, education, and supportive services. Spinal cord injured individuals require rehabilitation beyond the out-patient services offered in our healthcare system or they risk losing further muscle and bone mass, movement, flexibility, momentum and most importantly – hope. Scott has personally seen the impact of workplace injuries and the devastation caused to employees and their families. Scott sincerely hopes that none of his fellow workers will need to take advantage of the services FSWC provides however he does know that those individuals who do require their services in an effort to gain some of their independence and mobility back will be in the right hands.

PARENT COMMITTEE – ECOLE DR. MARGUERITE MICHAUD École Dr. Marguerite Michaud is located in Bouctouche, New Brunswick and was nominated by Leo Cormier, a Moncton Branch field employee. The parent committee at École Dr. Marguerite Michaud believes that everybody should have a right to play and so they have been fundraising for the past 3 years to provide a new park at the school that has accessibility for people in wheelchairs, the blind, and those with severe autism. This park will allow for those with wheelchairs to go right into the park and sit in an adapted swing for the first time. The park will also benefit the students who attend the school and those in the community from toddlers to seniors. The donation project possible in 2010. The students cannot wait to play in a safe and entertaining environment and see all the students with special needs being able to play as well.

A TRIBUTE TO GREG STEWART: Greg and his wife Dianne, have decided that it is time for them to retire, and are "heading south" effective October 2010. Since 1998, Greg has taken on many important tasks within Flynn, and is one of the most diligent, loyal effective Managers I have come across in my career. Greg has accomplished many things at Flynn, including spearheading major projects like the Pearson airport expansion in Toronto and the Vancouver Convention Center project, both of which helped propel our company into a new league in the eyes of our customers. Before Robertson, Flynn was not in the Architectural Panel business in any meaningful way. Today, we have 3 manufacturing plants that produce tens of thousands of Panels each year, and I would estimate that we do more Architectural Panel manufacturing and Contracting than any other company in the country, by at least 3 or 4 times. This would certainly not be the case, if not for Greg and the group he lead that joined us from Robertson in 1998, and all that they have done for Flynn since then. Greg will continue to perform the Editorial duties of the Flynn Flash company magazine - but from a warmer climate! NEW ROLE, NEW SCENERY In early 2010 John Silva relocated from Flynn’s Toronto Operations to British Columbia to take on the role of Vice President BC Region. In July the Toronto Architectural Products division held a surprise going away party for John Silva as this was the first chance to get everyone together to officially say thank you and best wishes. John played an integral part in the Toronto operations and will be missed. Hope you are enjoying the West Coast. Best wishes, John!

KINGS COUNTY ACADEMY GOES SOLAR “GREEN” A Halifax Branch metals crew is completing a cladding installation on new community school opening in Kentville, Nova Scotia expected to open in 2011. Working with General Contractor Bird Construction on yet another cladding and more than 3,000 square feet of SOLARWALL. Originally the project was proposed as a renovation to the existing school, but after several studies, it was determined that a new facility would better serve the community. FROM SERVICE TO MULTI-SCOPE CONTRACT ancouver Branch was known to Miclex as a roofing company, and therefore was contacted to undertake a partial roof replacement at the Real Canadian Superstore in Langley. Miclex Construction was awarded the contract by Loblaw Companies Limited, Canada’s largest food distributor and a leading provider of general merchandise products, drugstore and financial products and services to revamp the retail outlet at the Langley location. Service Department personnel used this opportunity to promote Flynn’s full range of services which resulted in a multi scope project. The contract expanded to include the addition of the supply and installation of architectural panels and metal roofing. By the time these disciplines were combined into one contract, time was now truly of the essence. Three teams were mobilized. Crews needed to work during the operation of the Real Canadian Superstore normal business hours adding to the challenge. The Flynn Canada team met the deadline with no deficiencies and was able to display the range of skill sets it has to offer. So even a small project can have hidden opportunities if we take the time to interact face to face with the client and use every opportunity to promote Flynn’s range of products and services. UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO AT MISSISSAUGA – A GLAZING SUCCESS Toronto Branch was successful in negotiating another multi- scope project. This time it back at the University of Toronto at Mississauga. It is another local project with a significant curtain wall and glazing portion. The glazing crew that worked on the project are shown below and were lead by General Foreman Steve Vincent with support from Area Superintendent Paul Harris. PREFERRED CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP STRENGTHENED

Although out of their 2010 budget, Calgary Coop came to the branch to ask to fit in an emergency favour when a new renovated store could not wait another year to fit into the reroofing schedule. Superintendent Alex Josar and Project Manager Tiffiny Connelly juggled the production schedule so that Randy Gidilewich and group could handle this cold applied replacement of the entire 8,000 square foot roof. RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX A MIXED BAG OF PANEL PRODUCTS Ottawa Branch teamed up with ZW Project Management to supply and install various wall systems at 424 Metcalf Ave. in the capital. More than 6,300 square feet of metal cladding with 2,300 square feet of Hardie Plank panels mixed throughout all elevations of two buildings. The entrances will be clad with Cemfort panels. GENERATING STATION SURPRISE AS CREWS BEGIN WORK

askatoon Branch Service Department was called out by Graham Construction to roof in numerous large openings in the existing EPDM roof on this power plant site. The scope of work was to remove existing curbs, install new deck, and vapour barrier, insulation, plywood and fully adhering EPDM. At first this seemed to be relatively simple project but after further investigation it was revealed

that there was large amount of steel under curbing that would have to be removed before the restoration could begin. Saskatoon Branch Service employees James Beniot and Luke Paules devised a plan to remove the steel safely and efficiently with

the approval of SaskPower and Graham. Keep up the good work, men!

FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING FOR YARD, SHOP AND OFFICE

egina Branch held fire extinguisher training for all employees in the Branch in August. Each worker had an opportunity to put out a fire with an extinguisher and everyone succeeded

before their extinguisher was depleted. Last year one of the guys couldn't get the pan fire out and needed a hand with another extinguisher! The group of metals workers shown left received training from extinguisher supplier Capital Fire Protection. They include from left to right below Ryan Cameron, Graham Vukman, Adam Kuntz, Jason Derr, Glenn Hoberg, Spencer Sayer, Dustin Geib, Scott Kadash and Kevin Kjarsgaard. Fire extinguisher training was also extended to the office staff members as well. They learned about the various types of fires and styles of extinguishers. Although it was another windy prairie day, each member of the group was able to put out a fire using an extinguisher. INDUSTRIAL GETS A RARE TREAT - EXTRA FOOD(S)! When asked to undertake work outside of their normal construction scope like oil sands and various resources sites, Flynn Industrial stepped in to undertake a leaking gutter at Extra Foods. Once work began it became clear that there were

LOGISTICS IN GREEN ROOFING: OVERCOMING CHALLENGES WITH INNOVATION Toronto Branch Green Roofing, formerly Gardens in The Sky, completed a 20,000 square-foot green roof installation on the new Corus Entertainment office building along the new waterfront development in downtown Toronto. Corus Entertainment is one of Canada’s most successful integrated media and entertainment companies housing television such as YTV, TELETOON and W Network, as well as owning 50 radio stations throughout Canada. In the photo are Sue Illes and Patrick Biller (from left to right) putting the final touches on the project. The project began in mid November of 2009 but the crew was only able to install the soil before de-mobilizing in early December. When the project resumed in the spring of 2010 access quickly became a challenge for the crew. All products had to be moved onto the roof manually to the installation site. Once the pre-vegetated sedum mats were ordered from Virginia, logistical planning kicked into high gear. Timing

became a critical factor as sedums have only a two-day lifespan from the time they are loaded until installation. When the live material arrived on site, crews had to work fast, installing 7,200 square feet per day and watering by hand daily to ensure the plants’ survival. Thanks to the crew’s hard work, the project was completed according to plan. The end result was a one-of-a-kind green roof on a new Toronto landmark building.

FLYNN FLASH BIKE TEAM – A MONEY RAISING MACHINE! Regina Branch employees enjoyed a fundraising event recently as The Flynn Flash Bike Team travelled to Manitou Beach in August for the Rona M.S. Bike Tour. The Team raised more than $8,300 for M.S. Impressive! Amazing! Congratulations! And “Way To Go” Doug for organizing this yearly event!! FIELD GUYS TEACH THE OFFICE FOLKS A THING OR TWO ach year the Victoria Branch bids on Tremco re-roofing projects for both the Saanich and Greater Victoria School Districts. Flynn has always been fortunate enough to be successful on a few projects but this year the Branch landed nine of these school projects! Since this type of project is a regular one for our branch it was important for us as support staff to learn more about the process so that we could better understand and assist our field staff in getting these projects completed efficiently. One of the schools was only a one story building. And the area we were working on was approximately 20 feet away from an embankment of a similar height. The Admin team was able to see firsthand the progression of the work by the hardworking field crew from start to finish. From initial crew mobilization and setup, the staff was able to witness the entire tearing-off and re-roofing process and even watched the final gravel being placed. All found it to be a worthwhile and enjoyable experience as they learned a lot from the guys on site. Thanks to the crew, who explained about the materials and the process and answered all of our safety and production-related questions. The “office folk” truly appreciated it and are hopeful that what they learned will better serve the company, its customers and most importantly themselves. Great idea! Good job, people! LEED GOLD CERTIFICATION FOR VANCOUVER HOUSING PROJECT Vancouver Branch was chosen by Darwin Construction to supply and install composite panels, metal roof and wall cladding as well as metal soffit panels on a new, LEED Gold Certified, low-income housing project at 1005 Station Street - a very busy downtown Vancouver street, Safety is Flynn’s number one priority especially as some of the work was over a pedestrian walkway. Because of our attention to safety, Flynn received praise from Work Safe BC after several site inspections. Crews shared the East and West Elevations with the masonry contractor, as our panels tied directly into the brick veneer in several locations. Crews setup the Hydro Mobile Platform System on the West Elevation. As a result of utilizing this system, and the hard work of our dedicated employees, we were able to exceed the client’s expectations by gaining two weeks on an already aggressive schedule. ROOF REPAIRS COMPLETED BY SERVICE CREWS AT THE HOLIDAY INN ST. JOHN’S t. John’s Branch Service Department truck has been very busy of late, including work on the newly renovated Holiday Inn for Project Management Services. In the shown photo are Dean King and Garry Vey. They installed all new EPDM flashings to approximately 400 lineal feet of roof perimeter at the very busy hotel. The department continues to find and grow the backlog of work. HUGE RE-ROOF FOR METROPOLIS AT METROTOWN

Metropolis is the largest mall in BC and Flynn Canada was awarded the 2010 re-roofing contract for approximately 250,000 square feet. Crews work well due to the relationship formed as a result of previous re-roofing jobs with IRC Building Sciences Group BC Inc. The project schedule began in March was completed in September. The production roofing team, left, was lead by Roofing Superintendent Evan Nebone, Roofing Superintendent Ray Vincenzi, and roofing metal flashing Superintendent Rick Wentland. HIGH PROFILE PROJECT - CODA ATHLETIC AND ICE COMPLEX

Calgary Branch roofing and metals departments teamed up with CANA Construction on this project at the Calgary Olympic Park site west of the city. The project entails metal cladding, metal decking, a curved standing seam roof as well as TPO roofing. The complex will house 3 NHL size rinks as well as one International size rink. It also houses high performance aerobic and weight training facilities for our athletes and office buildings for their coaches and support staff. The men who made up the crew are shown above, from left to right: Eric Kuzek, Tyler Grabowski, Timothy John Davis, Philip Sheppard, Jay Meszaros, Danny Tangen, foreman Richard White and Doug Downey. The crews’ attention to detail and safety, along with hard work, continue to solidify the relationship we have with CANA, a General Contractor who continually takes on the high profile projects – and Flynn wants to be a part of them.

20 YEARS HARD LABOUR ON SALT SPRING ISLAND – NOT A BAD SENTENCE Victoria Branch has a dedicated Gulf Island Service team managed by Fred Cliff. For these two members of Fred’s team, everyday starts and ends on the ocean as they sail from Swartz Bay Terminal on the 6:15 ferry for the 30 minute journey over to Salt Spring Island. What a way to start the day! Glenn has been doing this trip each morning for over 20 years. The commitment to the work that this crew provides is evident in the workmanship especially on the sometimes intricate types of work. One to the many projects that these men have been continually working on is 641 Fulford Ganges. This multi scope project has a number of buildings with a vast assortment of roofing needs. FLYNN DIVERSITY DEMONSTRATED ON COLLEGE PROJECT Moncton Branch production roofing crew is shown above as it mobilized on to the New Brunswick Community College, Moncton Campus for General Contractor Marco Maritimes Ltd. Crews installed 15,000 square feet of a 2-ply modified roof system. The men who completed the work are shown below in photo A, left to right: Ronald Jaillet, Laird Moore Foreman, Kevin Schapoks, Jean-Charles Cormier, Edgar Cormier, Mathieu Bourque and Claude Caissie. While work on the roof wound down, a Halifax Branch metals crew was gearing up to begin the installation of 23,000 square feet of metal siding and composite panels on this dual discipline, dual branch project. FOREMAN NO MATCH FOR ARCHBISHOP WHEN PUSHING A SCHEDULE Edmonton Branch Metals department are finishing up on a contract with Dawson-Wallace Construction for some 5,400 square feet of custom pearl white composite panels on the Newman College project. The team on site has been working hard to install panels in this jigsaw-like pattern with an extremely tight schedule of mid-September due to a visit from Archbishop Richard Smith (the driving force behind the completion schedule) The architect in this application has been able to utilize the versatility of our Accumet 2000 system as joint lines for each elevation are uniquely staggered with few panels the same. CREW HAD TO PERFORM WELL ON CONSTRUCTION ASSOCIATION BUILDING

egina Branch installed approximately 7,000 square feet of ballasted EPDM re-roof on the Regina/Saskatchewan Construction Association building in the Queen City recently. Rob Johnston and his crew got right to work on this project as the ballast had to be removed, stored and reused later. The crew also found that a fair portion of the existing insulation was wet and had to be replaced. GLAZING NEARS COMPLETION AT YEG EXPANSION

Edmonton Branch Glazing crews are nearing completion of their curtain wall installation for PCL on the new Edmonton International Airport Terminal Expansion. With the continued dedication from the crew, anticipated completion is October of this year. The crew consists of manpower from both the Calgary and Edmonton Branches. The project is made up of unitized panels built in both the Toronto and Edmonton facilities with the Edmonton Branch coordinating the installation and on site details with PCL. oncton Branch crews were awarded this Department of Supply and Services contract but had to work hard to meet the schedule for the upcoming opening of the school year. Roger LeBlanc Jr. and his crew worked hard on this 17,500 square foot roof replacement. The new system included a fully tapered insulation system with a 2-ply modified bitumen membrane. With all the crew's hard work, the project was completed prior to school starting. SERVICE CREWS VENTURE INTO NEW LINE OF WORK ON CANOPY

Regina Branch Service crews, typically don't do canopy cleaning, but when a national account such as Petro Canada has a problem, Flynn is all ears! The valued customer requested the canopy at its Creekside facility be cleaned. When the Flynn Service crew arrived on site they discovered that roof drains were completely blocked. Because of this kind of very important Customer Service, Flynn Regina has become the ‘go to’ company locally that can solve all kinds of roofing problems and issues. Thanks to Aerial Platform Certified Foremen John Krysak and Glen Hoberg of the Branch’s metals crews, for the safe completion of the work. The crew donned rain gear and rented a pressure washer to complete the project as the station closed for the day and entrances blocked for safety. The call was another example of Flynn’s expanding repertoire of capabilities.

NEWFOUNDLAND POWER IMPRESSED WITH FLYNN’S SAFETY CULTURE

St John’s Branch was selected when NL Power decided it was time to replace the roof on their corporate headquarters, The power giant invited only the best contractors to bid on this high profile project. Out of this group Flynn was awarded the work. A highly safety conscious company, NL Power were very pleased with the Branch’s professionalism and dedication to health and safety. NEW ROOF ON CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP AS FACILITY REQUIRES TOTAL RECALL

Regina Branch roofing crews were awarded a relatively small 4-ply project for Triple Seven Chrysler this summer in the Provincial capital. But the crew and the owner quickly realized that once the roof was opened up this would become a complete and total re-roof. It was only then that they discovered that the entire system was saturated. The contract became a 3,800 square foot re-roof including the removal of existing roof skins and the installation of 1 layer of 1/2" fiberboard with 4 ply, tar and gravel. CALEDONIA REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL OPENS ON-TIME

RCMP – ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM COUNTS ON FLYNN

Regina Branch roofers laid approximately 5,800 square feet of new fully adhered white EPDM roofing and 1,100 square feet of waterproofing for General Contractor Graham Construction. The project was plagued by weather delays and the decision-making process that existed within the bureaucracy. Crews were on and off site on a few occasions but as the weather improved, so did their productivity. Adhering EPDM to a 12' high wall proved to be a challenge but the end result was pleasing thanks to the crew shown left to right: Kyle Anderson, Aaron Bjorklund, Darren Ironchild and Jason Bloch.

SAFETY CULTURE LEADS DIRECTLY TO ADDITIONAL CONTRACT

Winnipeg Branch of Flynn Canada Ltd. was chosen by Conviron to completely re-roof the company’s existing 65,700 square foot roof system. Conviron or Controlled Environment Ltd. is a provider of controlled environment systems for the agricultural, biotechnology, pharmaceutical & industrial research markets with systems operating in over 80 countries worldwide. Because of their own impeccable record of safety, quality and production, Conviron was impressed with Flynn’s Safety Culture which led to the contract. The scope for the replacement is a new vapour barrier, Insulation, self adhering base sheet and a torch on colvent cap complete with cap flashings to all perimeter edges. JOINT HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEE INSPECTION PROVES VALUABLE

Regina Branch Health and Safety Committee completed a joint safety inspection of a metals crew project at the Saskatchewan Disease Lab in August. The committee found it quite educational to do the review from the "reviewer's perspective" and were able to make several improvement suggestions. It was great to see Management and field employees working conjointly toward their common goal: the improved health and safety of Flynn workers on, the public's safety and the jobsite itself. Thanks to Ryan Cameron and his crew on site for the tour. The crew is utilizing a swing stage from our Calgary branch to have recently six crew members complete their Suspended Access Training through the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association. SASKATOON CREW TACKLES FASCIA AND SOFFIT CHALLENGES

Hamilton Branch was awarded a contract by Aquicon Construction Co. Ltd. for a new addition at the Welland Campus of Niagara College. The project consisted of a 56,500 square feet 2-ply mod-bit system roof extension as well as a 7,000 square foot Green Roof by Gardens in the Sky, Eleven roof areas were part of the work with 700 square feet of tie-ins to the existing structure. MOUNTAIN LEA LODGE GETS â€œTHE WORKSâ€?

Halifax Branch Foreman Greg Nickerson, at far right and Jared Swinemar, left, review the field measurements on a 38,000 square foot metal roof retrofit for the Mountain Lea Lodge in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. Crews began removing the existing shingles from the building during the hottest week of the year. Mountain Lea Lodge is a nursing home in this rural community. Aside from the roof replacement, crews made several other improvements to the building including new metal siding, gutters and soffits. Good work, fellas!

CHURCH IN BURLINGTON ANOTHER FLYNN MULTI-SCOPE PROJECT

amilton Branch Roofing worked closely once again with IRC Roof Consultants, who acted as General Contractor on the impressive church at the interchange of the QEW and Highway 401 in Burlington, Ontario. The scope included a complete 18,300 square foot re-roof with a 2-ply mod-bit system. Extensive mechanical work was done also done as Flynn crews replaced the roof. A new guard rail system was installed on 7 different roof areas. YOUNG GUNS TAKE ON HOSPITAL ADDITION

Francois Lanouette and his crew faced a variety of challenges as this young but very capable crew is installed some 7,100 square feet of corrugated cladding on the St. Boniface Hospital Addition. No issue was too big to stop this crew from performing in a professionally manner as they addressed and rectified everything that came their way. With the use of scaffolds, scissor lifts and a swing stage, safety and team work was priority number one and the entire crew has gained valuable experience and knowledge as a result. The future of the Winnipeg Branch looks promising with up and comers like metals employees shown from left to right: James Parker, Dale Borrowman, Adrian Stock, Foreman Francois Lanouette and Alain Lanouette.

DAM! WHAT A JOB AT GARDINER HYDRO askatoon Branch service crews, shown from left to right: are Fabian Brady, Georden Wilson and Kris Fedourk. These men worked with General Contractor Graham Construction at the Gardiner Hydro Dam on the South Saskatchewan River. Multiple roof sections were replaced with fully adhered EPDM including two of the five tower roofs as seen behind the men in the photo. This was a high profile job and Fabian and his crew have executed the work in a professional manner that met the high expectations of Safety and Quality of the Saskatchewan Water Authority. WINNIPEG TAKING SAFETY TO THE STREETS - HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Winnipeg Branch employees Dirk Kunst and Jeff Clarkson took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer as Safety Coaches during Winnipeg’s Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build. The aggressive initiative saw 10 homes erected in the former Sir Sam Steele school site. Some 32 Habitat families will call the area home by 2011. Dirk and Jeff’s duties as Safety Coaches included educating and assisting in the use of Personal Protective Equipment, Power Tools, Ladders and Scaffolding. In addition, planning to eliminate hazards was discussed. For example, building some of the floors and roofs on the ground and then hoisting the units into place. They worked with a variety of different skill sets from trade professionals to volunteers on their very first construction site. Linda Peters, Manager of Habitat for Humanity wrote: I just wanted to thank you for volunteering to help out our Safety Coaching Team at our Blitz Build this summer. It is such a delight to know that people are so willing to give of their time to help people they don’t even know. The Safety Coaches were very well received, and I thank you for your patience and kindness that you showed the volunteers. They were incredibly receptive to the idea of doing their tasks safely and were even asking questions – which is a first. I hope you will consider assisting us again next year. I will definitely be in touch. Thanks again, and if I can ever be of assistance to you, please feel free to let me know. Great job guys for a great cause!

AN A & W WHERE? MOOSOMIN? WHERE THE HECK IS THAT?

HAMILTON CREWS SHORE UP SASKATOON ON SCHOOL PROJECT

The Saskatoon Branch Roofing Division recently completed a 7,200 square foot, two ply SBS system, re-roof project over a daycare at Lester B. Pearson School in the city. Weather finally cleared up enough to allow crews to pick up the pace as crew egina Branch recently were awarded a contract for 2,300 square foot of SBS roofing on for a new A & W in Moosomin, Saskatoon, some 220 kilometers east of the city. What should have been a relatively quick project got off to a slow start as a breakdown in communication had occurred with our insulation supplier. After a few days and numerous phone calls the situation was straightened out and Foreman Harley Tawpisin and his crew were well on their way to a successful completion of the project. DOLLARAMA: A GREAT PLACE TO SAVE A BUCK OR TWO

In the last edition of the Flash, we told you the story of a St. John's crew installing a new EPDM roof to a Staples store. The following month, Flynn was called again to install a new EPDM roof to a new Dollarama, built onto the Staples outlet. The crew in the picture was originally onsite to receive materials and set up the job. But since this was accomplished in such short-order, foreman Will Kennedy decided to lay out the roof while there, and after calling in reinforcements, proceeded to lay out and gravel the entire 12,000 square feet. This maneuver saved the company a “Buck or Two” thanks to the crew responsible for this quick and efficient cost saving work. Those responsible, above and from left to right were: Brian Hendry, Jason Dawe, foreman Will Kennedy and Lance Wicks. Nice work, guys!

JACOBS EXPANSION A SIGN OF GROWTH

s the oil industry a looking for direction, signs of growth are showing up with the announcements of two new oil sands projects slated to begin. Flynn Industrial was called by Jacobs Engineering in Edmonton to complete the roof cladding on their new office expansion. The fact that this company, that is heavily dependent on oil sands work, is expanding also shows confidence in “the patch”. The scope of work for the “Industrial Boys” was to install a standing seam roof while incorporating roof curbs, vented ridge caps and custom made flashing to match existing building. TORONTO SOUTH DETENTION – A BEHEMOTH FOR ROOFING

Kitchener Branch Foreman Santos Garcia and his crew re-roofed more than 30,000 square feet of existing double roof for the Waterloo Regional District School Board recently. Overseen by IRC Building Sciences Group, Santos brought this project in on schedule and budget. Toronto Branch has been contracted to provide roofing services for the newest detention center for the city of Toronto and Ellis-Don Construction Corporation. This facility will replace the old Mimico and national landmark Don jails. Crews had to deal with multiple roof levels on 18 different structures. The roof system consisted of a poly vapor barrier, two layers of poly ISO insulation, a layer of dens-deck and a TPO membrane. ANOTHER RIP OFF AT A PUBLIC SCHOOL

QUALITY TEAM WORK ON NORTHERN B.C. HOSPITAL CURTAIN WALL

ancouver Branch Glazing Division partnered with Cannon Architects and the Acciona Infrastructures and Stuart Olson Joint Venture to design and build a hybrid curtain wall system for the new Fort St. John Hospital and Residential Care P3 project. The system needed to meet the performance specifications

required for a northern British Columbian climate. Vancouver's Contracts Manager Wayne Mack and Construction Manager Brian Romanchuk, alongside our General Superintendent Scott Armstrong and Project Manager Jeff Ferrey, put together a team of people in our fabrication and operations department. The construction schedule required a joint effort between Flynn Vancouver's fabrication department led by Axel Hoffmann and Sandro Simicic and Flynn Edmonton with special thanks to Joe Millard and Russ Morley for assisting with fabrication and logistics. Darris Shaw and his crew mobilized on site, assembled the curtain wall metal, and installed it with such professionalism and efficiency that we mobilized the crew at another site as we had far exceeded the schedule. CREWS TOOK TOUGH PROJECT RIGGING WITH GRAIN OF SALT Kitchener Branch recently accepted a contract from General Contractor PMI Contracting for a combined roofing and metal cladding project for the Sifto Salt Company. The slope of the roof is 11/12 and all seams had to be hand welded as automated equipment cannot weld on this slope. A specially engineered and designed rolling scaffold that allowed the men to work up and down the 120' slope safely was implemented. To meet the schedule for the 106,500 square foot roofing and 67,000 cladding project, sheet metal and roofing crews from both the Kitchener and London branches were required. EDMONTON SHOPS BUSY AND IN FULL OPERATION dmonton Branch Shop has finally been reshaped to include three distinctive fabrication facilities under one roof. The plan is to be able to coordinate and provide on time deliveries from three multi-scope disciplines including architectural panels, glazing and trims. Midwest Fabrication is getting ready for what will be a very busy fall and winter. An expected 14,000 architectural panels will be required in the next 7 - 8 months. FLYNN – PCL TACKLE MULTI-SCOPE PROJECT

Saskatoon Branch Metals Division linked up with PCL Maxam on this University of Saskatchewan project that consisted of 1,900 square feet of curved standing seam roof, insulation and Sopralene Flam 180. As well, some 7,300 square feet of Accumet wall and soffit panels were installed on z-bars over insulation and vapour barrier. ancouver Branch roofing and metals departments combined on an 80,000 square foot multi-scope cedar conversion project consisting of new EPDM deadpan valleys and metal flashings. Coordination was key to the success of the project. The Vancouver decking, shingle, EPDM and flashing crews all had important roles in completing the project a full month ahead of schedule; just in time before the wet weather becomes an issue. ALL SMILES AS AJAX OPERATIONS CENTRE GETS GREEN ROOF

Toronto Branch Green Roofing, formerly Gardens in The Sky, recently completed a 9,000 square-foot green roof for the Ajax Operations Centre. The roofing consultant was Fishburn Building Sciences Group. The crews focused on the attention to detail required for the supply, construct and install framework and green roof components in order to comply with strict building guidelines. The project set a new tone for the way in which green roofs will be installed in the future. Many green roof components – such as the drainage material, root barrier, engineered soil and plants – must be specifically chosen in relation to the building, location, and structural loads. Green roofs have been and required to be built to the same stringent, generally accepted specifications as in the larger construction industry, creating a cohesive partnership between the two trades. The crew displayed exceptional attention to detail required for the completion of this job, which proceeded on time, and on budget, and – most importantly – to spec! OTTAWA COPPER CREW PUT THEIR MARK ON OUR FLAGSHIP FACILTY s the new Toronto Branch office and plant facility nears completion, crews concentrate on some of the finishing work in the lobby of the facility. Vice President, Don Belton has been overseeing the massive renovation work at the new facility. The building includes corporate and branch offices as well as the architectural panel plant, glazing plant and trim shop as well as amalgamated maintenance, shipping and receiving among some of the benefits. Don made a plea for help with the copper work from the copper capital and of the country – Ottawa and specifically Stephane LaLonde who immediately hopped a plane to Toronto. Stephane took all field measurements and called them in to the Ottawa Shop who almost instantaneously commenced fabrication. Shortly thereafter two real ‘craftsmen” arrived to install. And what a fabulous job they did. Above and on the right is Daniel Gelineau (who also worked the copper on the Omaha Performing Arts Centre, and on the left is Jimmy Samson. These two are truly craftsmen. Great work, all three of you! Congratulations!

FLYNN CREWS WERE SHORT ON MANPOWER BUT HUGE ON HEART London Branch Service crews were called upon to help out recently at Monsignor Morrison School for the Thames Valley District School Board to help meet the opening of school deadline. The existing roof was heavily saturated making the roof removal a daunting task. A sticky, cold applied system with tapered insulation was installed next. Added to that were job site temperatures that were in the high 30's and low 40's making it yet another hot summer re-roofing project. Manpower was also limited at the time but due to the great effort all around from employees shown left to right: Chris McBurney, Gerry Gowers, Charlie Thomas and John Dadson. PRODUCTION TEAM ASSISTS SERVICE AT REID CENTRE s things pick up in the St. John’s Branch Service Department, production sometimes lends a helping hand. Moncton Branch Service Department worked with contractor Avide Developments to complete a 13,000 square foot 3-ply cold applied roof system over retirement residence Foundry Place. OAKVILLE TRANSIT OPENS QUARTER MILLION SQUARE FOOT FACILITY

oronto Branch roofing crews recently completed another contract with PCL Constructors Canada Inc. on the Oakville Transit Facility’s newest addition to service its rapidly growing development, population, and infrastructure. The roofing specified for the 255,000 square foot facility, included a polyethylene vapour retarder, two layers of poly insulation - mechanically attached, tapered insulation and a 60mil PVC membrane. The challenges of this project were the substantial amount of skylights, curbs, and penetrations through the system. Congratulations to the crew for outstanding safety and quality. FIRST CLASS FACILITY FOR TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Toronto Branch walked the Red Carpet as the Bell Lighbox was the first big hit at The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this summer as the stars invaded Hollywood North. This was a special year for TIFF as they hosted the Festival from their brand new building in downtown Toronto. Flynn’s glazing crews lead by Chris Burrows, Larry Dawe and Ken Miller are seen putting the finishing touches on this successful multi scope project in time for the grand opening of the festival.

MULTI-BRANCH PARTICIPATION COMPLETES PLANT FACILITY ON TIME askatoon Branch was awarded a contract by General Contractor Points Athabasca for a new 10,000 square foot, EPDM, loose laid and Ballasted roof system on Cameco’s steam plant in Key Lake. Crews flew in from Kelowna Branch to help out and had to endure not only the flight to Saskatoon but a further 3 hours on a bush plane to beautiful Northern Saskatchewan. The company had faith that the men were more than qualified to meet and challenge that they encountered. They were a great asset on the project ensuring an acceptable job completion. Thanks to the guys from Kelowna for lending us a big hand on a very important job. PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY FACILITY GETS NEW ROOF AFTER 90 YEARS

London Branch Foreman Rui Medeiros and his crew recently worked on this high profile project at the University of Western Ontario for General Contractor Norlon Builders. Another trade had to remove the roof because of asbestos. As the asbestos was removed Flynn crews followed to ensure that the roof was watertight. Crews reported that the roof deck, installed in the 1920’s had extensively rusted in spots and had to be replaced before the re-roofing could proceed. THE ALVIN HAMILTON BUILDING SKYLIGHT REPLACEMENT – REAL CHALLENGE

Regina Branch Service Department was awarded a contract to do remedial work to an existing roof while general contractor Stuart Olsen prepared to replace a large skylight on this LEEDS project. Flynn crews cut back the existing roofing to allow for the skylight replacement, then in-filled the cut back area and made it water tight. Crews also installed 6,900 square feet of metal roof deck on the temporary structure, sealing the temporary structure base while diverting rainfall water to existing drains and neighbouring roofs. The project was quite challenging as extensive co-ordination was required and the government building remained operational during the project.

NAOSH WEEK “SAFETY ON THE JOB” POSTER CONTEST For the 2010 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week at the beginning of May all Flynn Branches had a children’s poster contest.

Ethan Dawe, from St. John’s won the CSSE National Poster Contest for NAOSH week and his drawing will appear in the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering’s 2011 Calendar. He received a $200 Canada Savings Bond for his win in the 5-6 year-old category.

MILLER 8174 & 8175 ROPE GRABS

8174 Manual Rope Grab

There has been some confusion regarding which Miller Rope grab should be used in certain configurations: 1. Vertical Applications: (ie.Swing stages) 2. Horizontal Applications: (i.e. Roofing when rope is lying on the roof.) Here’s a picture of both the 8174 (top) and the 8175 (bottom) attached to a rope. Ensure that you are using the correct Miller Rope Grab for their applicable applications.

8175 Trailing Rope Grab

Please be aware of the differences. The most notable is the 8175 is a Trailing rope grab and will creep - which is obviously not acceptable in a restraint situation. The 8174 is a Manual rope grab and can be set in position by lifting upward on the spring-loaded cam handle that connects the gripping cams.

SHELL’S GLOBAL SAFETY DAY, HOSTED BY BLJC Flynn Canada participated in Shell’s Global Safety Day, hosted by BLJC, on June 8th 2010. In attendance at this event were both SHELL- BLJC -Managers of Health and Safety, and other vendors. Globally, Shell is striving to have 100,000 participants in review of safety work at Shell. The focus this year is to capture and review near miss and potential incident, furthermore review the 12 Life Saving Rules and Safety Forms.

The photo shows Foremen Dave Alves and Luis Rodrigues at a Shell site in Markham, Ontario. They demonstrated roof access and safety controls that Flynn Canada has in place when working on site. All in attendance were impressed by our onsite demonstration which included showing the various types of safety equipment used on a daily basis. Afterward the crew was given gift certificates by Shell for a job well done.
