HALTON CONDO CORPORATION SELECTS FLYNN FOR SHORELINE RETROFIT The Hamilton Branch worked with General Contractor, Wal-Tech on this Condo retrofit project located right on the shores of Lake Ontario in Burlington. Branch crews successfully completed the roof replacement on the multi-story structure of approximately 13,300 square feet with new modified-bitumen installed. In addition to the roofing scope, Flynn crews took on some 2,400 square feet of wall modifications as well as the removal and salvage of an existing 700 square feet of copper roof. This roof was replaced with mechanically fastened dens-deck, a self-adhered base sheet and new copper roof sheets. THE ABBOTSFORD BRANCH HAS MOVED
W
ith no physical presence in the interior region of BC Flynn Canada Ltd. has re l o c a t e d the branch from the Abbotsford
location to Kelowna. 75% of both the office and field staff have made the choice to move with the branch
and take on the new endeavor...it has been a group effort from the team to make it happen but we did it and had the doors opened for January. Thanks to all for the sacrifice and effort made from those that have been involved. With the move into the Interior of BC, this will strengthen Flynn's position in the BC region and open doors that have not been available before.
COLCHESTER REGIONAL HOSPITAL REPLACEMENT ALMOST COMPLETE Halifax Branch metals crews are shown left at the site of the new Colchester Regional Hospital Replacement Project. The facility is fast approaching completion and is this region’s newest health care facility. Crews have been fortunate to have had a relatively easy winter during this project; a welcome change from our usual cold and snowy seasons of the past. Working with General Contractor Ellis Don, Greg Nickerson and his team have made good progress with the contract that includes supplying and installing more than 90,000 square feet of metal cladding. The contract is expected to be completed early in the spring of 2010. The hospital is expected to be open sometime in 2012. B rian McCaghre n and his group tore off 13,500 square feet while James Pyykonen and his crew worked their way through a 19,200 square foot roof. Both roofs were difficult but in addition to the roofing tear-off, James and his men had to strip away 5,500 square feet of Stramit deck as well!
General Contractor Jocelyn Roof Consultants contracted Flynn’s Hamilton Branch on yet another Niagara re-roof project. This time almost 50,000 square feet of roofing and related sheet metal flashings were required to complete the multi-level roof areas on the Maintenance Building for the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority. The site is located right next to the historic Welland Canal in St. Catharines. t John’s Branch has benefited from the provincial government's $800-million economic stimulus plan, by successfully obtaining a great deal of im p rovement work to the pro v i n c e ’s aging infrastructure including this latest school re-roof project. lynn Winnipeg Branch stayed productive even during inclement weather by putting on an in-house training program which took place over a three day period. The program covered a variety of different roofing systems and gave all employees partaking a chance to gain valuable experience, knowledge and hands on training. 4 Ply, Single Ply (EPDM, Sarnafil and Tremco) and 2 Ply (Cold Applied) systems were the main ingredients of this training. All courses also incorporated the necessary safety set ups required for each system i.e. kettles, guard-rails, bump lines, fall protection restraint/arrest and PPE. The idea was brought forth by Derrick Harrison (Service Manager) with direction from Mike Johnson (Branch Manager) and was organized by Derrick Harrison and Clarence Poworoznik (Roofing Manager).

The training and methods I learned and received the last couple of days will no doubt make me a better roofer. Thanks to all the instructors who took the time to teach and demonstrate. FLYNN REPAIRS LEAKS IN AREA SWIMMING POOLS

service crew from the Victo ria Branch recently completed repairs to the expansion joints at the bottom of two local swimming pools in Victoria and Nanaimo. The pools w e re losing thousands of gallons of water a day due to faulty expansion joints
a round and across the bottom of the pools. Due to the extreme conditions it was necessary to complete it in the summer months when schools are out and the pools are at their busiest. A tight schedule was put in place for the pools needed to be drained, the repairs completed and the pools refilled. Foreman Rick Miller and his crew worked together to strip out the old material and clean and prepare the surface for installation of the new Belzona expansion joint materials. Allan Austin, a Belzona representative, was on site for training and the mixing of the quick setting expansion joint materials. With a good organization and a hard working team, these projects were completed on schedule and there were no delays in re-opening the pools to the public. Victoria Branch Shingle crews worked long hours over the winter months to help our metals and roofing departments keep on schedule at the new Parkside Place project. The Shingle crew was recently re-united and immediately began work on a 32,000 square foot cedar conversion project courtesy of Wells Klein Consulting. The project stayed right on schedule and was completed in mid-March. In addition, we would like to acknowledge three young men who have risen to the challenge of running the crews. Together Dean Craggs, Brian Aitken and Jordan Cooke have made an outstanding impression on all in their new leadership roles. These two, low rise aff o rdable housing developments a re seeking a Silver and Gold LEED cert i f i c a t i o n , re s p e c t i v e l y. The combined projects total some 29,000 square feet with roof areas that have a combination of green roofs, solar collectors, water retention and light solar reflection materials. The latest for the building supply chain is being constructed by Quorex Construction. A number of Flynn crews were on site through most of the winter months to accomplish the task. Metals crews installed more than 33,400 square feet of 3" foam panel as well as an additional 17,000 plus square feet of metal cladding in Rona White and Grey. The Branch was also awarded the TPO roofing. However due to the winter work, the Branch suggested that a Soprafix System would be a much better way to go, and the architect agreed. With more than 105,000 square feet and 3 months of hard work behind them, the Soprafix System was finally completed.

CREWS TURN UP THE HEAT AT CARLETON CIVIC CENTRE
M
oncton Branch Service crews received an emergency leak call at the Carleton Civic Centre in Woodstock, New Brunswick recently and upon their arrival at site, Service Foreman Leo Cormier and his partner Dennis Cormier found that a section of roof had blown over in a wind storm. Leo was able to flip the damaged section of roof back over and make it water tight until Ryan Baisley (Foremen) and his partner Brad Inder could return to site and replace the damaged section. The men ripped out a 400 square foot section of roof at the corner of the building and replaced it. A new metal gravel-stop also had to be installed. The work was all done using cold applied materials. It’s amazing what a heat gun can do. Excellent service work fellas!!! 9
CHILLING OUT AT U OF A COOLING PLANT

ven though the winter in Edmonton hasn’t been as harsh as n o rmal, it still received its share of cool weather. General Contractor Chandos Construction put its faith in the Edmonton
Branch metals group by offering Flynn the contract to supply and install the exterior façade on the new Cooling Plant project at the University of
Alberta. This large and somewhat complicated project features glazing, architectural louvres, metal cladding and Laminati wood panels.
‘COMPLEXITY’ THE WORD AT SARNIA BLUE WATER BRIDGE General Contractor McKay-Cocker Construction Ltd. selected the London Branch of Flynn Canada Ltd. to perform the roofing contract on this complex p ro j e ct in Sarnia, Ontario. After recently completing work on the London Recreation Centre the crew immediately left town to begin work on the Blue Water Bridge Authority Complex. The project consisted of more than 13,000 square feet of inverted modified bitumen roofing; more than 46,000 square feet of PVC roofing and 8,200 square feet of fully adhered roofing. In addition, almost 38,000 square feet of mechanically fastened PVC roof was laid by the experienced crews from London .The pro j e c t c o n s i s t e d of multiple roof levels and terraces as well

OXBOW K12 SCHOOL – ANOTHER LEED PROJECT General Contractor Westridge Construction contracted the Regina Bra n ch to install appro x i m a t e l y 62,300 square feet of Soprastar white SBS high pe rf o rmance membrane system on this prestigious p roject which is seeking LEED cer t i f i c a t i o n . To get the pro j ect started, a Winnipeg crew led by Glen Ka u s was brought in. With numero u s roof areas on many diff e rent roof slopes, the p ro ject presented plenty of challenges. With about t w o- t h i rds of the vapor barrier in place, at Flash print time, crews still have a long way to go but a re confident that the project will be completed on time. EV LOGISTICS NOT AN “EAVY” PROJECT Vancouver Branch was recently awarded a contract on the new EV Logistics project on the BC mainland. The company is constructing

an integrated multi-temperature warehouse and transportation facility that distributes goods to 125 grocery stores throughout B.C. and Alberta. EV Logistics is the very first freezer building tackled by Beedie Construction and Flynn was chosen as their preferred contractor to supply and install the metal deck and 300,000 square feet of loose laid and ballasted EPDM roofing. Thanks to Ray Vincenzi (Superintendent, Roofing), Dave W (Foreman, Roofing), Annette Scarth (Project Manager, Metals), Christian Snead (Superintendent, Metals) and Brian Zahorejko (Foreman, Metals) for their close communication to maintain the schedule and kept the project running smoothly.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED ON NORTH SIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL North Sydney, Nova Scotia will soon have a bright new addition to its school board with the opening of the North Side Elementary School. The Halifax Branch is completing the installation of 11,000 square feet of composite aluminum metal panels and 4,000 square feet of metal cladding. eneral Contractor Engineering Concepts Niagara recently contracted Flynn Canada’s Hamilton B ra n ch to re - roof more than 10,500 square feet
on the Niagara Falls facility of the Niagara Peninsula
Energy Company. The project included a 4-ply built up roof system complete with the necessary ballast. The new roof was complicated by a tie-in to existing roofing on two sides. The project was overseen by Jocelyn Roof Consultants. CREWS ‘BRIDGE THE GAP’ TO R E - ROOF GIENOW W I N D OWS IN CALGARY The Calgary Branch was once again called upon by General Contractor and Roof Consultants Pro-Spec and ING Real Estate to help with a re-roof project for important customer Gienow Windows. In order to gain access to the roof area, the Calgary roofing team worked with the owner and Canadian Pacific Railways on this difficult project that had virtually no access. Eventually it was concluded that a bridge would have to be constructed over the existing CP rail line at the

LARGEST PROJECT TO DATE FOR VICTORIA BRANCH AT UPTOWN SHOPPING CENTRE
U
ptown Shopping Centre is the largest single project undertaken by the Victoria Branch. Along with
a significant flat roofing component, this
project includes 29,700 square feet of foam panel, 21,000 square feet of corrugated cladding and 30,000 square feet of Dry Design wall panel system. Flynn's contract for the above work is spread over 7 b u i l d i n gs with a second phase planned. Due to extreme site conditions some unique and innovative equipment had to be employed to aid in the installation of the horizontal foam panels. Our crews have dedicated many hours to this project both in training on the new equipment and working within an extremely tight construction schedule as dictated by General Contractor Vanbots Construction / Magil - Joint Venture. A joint-venture of crews from both Victoria and Vancouver created an awesome 30-person team. LONG AWAITED BRANDON #1 FIRE HALL COMPLETE The Winnipeg Branch of Flynn Canada was awarded yet another contract from Bird construction on the long awaited #1 Fire Hall in Brandon, Manitoba. The project included a complex application of Swisspearl panels. Ryan Renout and his crew will take their experiences and lessons learned from the previous Swisspearl project at the Institute for Advanced Medicine at the Winnipeg Health Science Centre to install almost 20,000 square feet of Swisspearl on the new firehall. Canada successfully negotiated the entire building envelope contract for the new Edmonton Remand Centre project with Edmonton based General Contractor Stuart Olson. The multi-scope
contract includes metal panels, cladding, glazing and roofing with a schedule that is expected to be c o m p l e te in 2012. MCMASTER-DEGROOTE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS INTRODUCES THE NEW RON JOYCE CENTRE The Hamilton Branch was successful in negotiating the roofing contract with General Contractor Cooper Construction on the new and highly prestigious Ron Joyce Centre at McMaster’s Degroote Business Centre. The LEED certified project, named in honour of area entrepreneur Ron Joyce, of Tim Horton’s fame, consists of more than 20,000 square feet of new roofing. The contract is split into three parts including almost 13,000 square feet of 2-ply modified bitumen on a concrete deck, 5,400 square feet of 2-ply mod-bit on a metal deck and 2,000 square feet of inverted 2-ply mod-bit on several balconies. The London Branch of Flynn Canada Ltd. was selected recently by General Contractor Ellis Don Construction to supply and install a new roof at Woodstock General Hospital. With many challenges ahead, Foreman Rui Medeiros and his crew took on this difficult project, again, smack in the middle of Southern Ontario's snow-belt. The pressure was on to get the building watertight as snow began to hit the area. The Hospital project, seeking LEED certification, consisted of more 116,000 square feet of a hot-applied 3 ply roof system with calcite aggregate into the adhesive. A TRUE ‘BUILD,THEN DESIGN’ PROJECT
Over the past 6 years, Regina Branch has acted as General Contractor on this project as crews have been performing roofing work section by section. The building has had its own issues as crews remove a Stramit decking with a drywall ceiling only inches below. With care and caution, crews installed approximately 7,500 square feet of re - roof using Soprema's high perf o rmance SBS system as well as a new 3/4 " plywood deck. Slow and steady and with years of experience has helped the Branch successfully complete the various phases.

hen Lake Cowichan Secondary School needed a seismic upgrade and envelope remediation, who better to call than Roofing Superintendent Ken Littleproud from the Victoria Branch? Ken actually worked on the school as an apprentice in 1991 during his first years with Armour Roofing and Sheet Metal prior to its purchase by Flynn Canada Ltd. Things have come full circle as Ken is now the superintendent managing three disciplines for us. Waterproofing, built in gutters and 2-ply SBS flat roofing were installed by Roofing Foreman Jack Marsh and his crew of Nick Wilson, John Kulczycki, Ron Hill, Jim Muir and Geoff Myers. Metal fascia panels, metal wall cladding, and standing seam metal roofing was installed by Sheet Metal Foreman Sean Williams and his crew shown right from left to right including Derrick Wilsher, Doug Jackson, Nick Wilson, Glyn Williams, Sean Williams, Jack Marsh and Derek Matthews. Due to the nature of this project it requires a great amount of teamwork throughout the disciplines and this project would not have been a success without the crews working together. ANOTHER GREEN PROJECT AT DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY FOR FLYNN
DALHOUSIE’S LIFE SCIENCES RESEARCH INSTITUTE – ALSO A FLYNN PROJECT The Halifax Branch was also awarded yet another contract at Dalhousie; this one with General Contractor PCL Constructors Canada Inc. The Branch has already started supplying and installing composite metal panels on the University’s Life Sciences Research Centre. There are some 38,000 square feet of panels and 19,000 square feet of metal cladding. The building is slated to open in 2011.

eneral Contractor AECON chose Flynn Canada’s Halifax Branch to participate in a unique and technologically advanced project at Dalhousie University. The aging campus buildings are slowly but
surely being replaced by modern and efficient structures and one of these is the new Academic Building. The structure will house such faculties as the School of Social Work, Computer Science Labs and the Campus Computer Store. As a Green project, the building will boast some of the most leading-edge resource saving products available. And that’s exactly where Flynn comes in. In addition to approximately 3,000 square feet of cladding, there is some 2,700 square feet of Solar Wall, a cladding system that harnesses the energy of

VANCOUVER’S HISTORIC UNITED ME MORIAL CHURCH
T
he Vancouver Branch Roofing Division was recently awarded the re-roof contract on the 88 year old Canadian United Memorial Church. A complete set of scaffolding including a temporary roof was installed for ease of access and to protect this historic church. The work consisted of removing and handling the 88 year old asbestos tiles with continuous air quality testing to insure safe working conditions. More than 10,400 square feet of shingles on the pitched roof were installed. In addition more than 800 square feet of 2 Ply SBS

eneral Contractor Manley Construction awarded the Vancouver Branch Service Department a special project for Simon
Fraser University. With the project duration of a couple of months, some logistical hurdles had to be overcome.
Co o rdination of the work with the University was n e c e s s a ry as concerns over the odours from our kettles that had been set up onsite as well as pedestrian access through the worksite had to be addressed. Work included tearing off the old membrane down to the concrete underneath, mopping down TRA sheets, then capping off the system with wall flashings and termination bars. The job was completed in a timely manner and the Branch looks forward to dealing with the University again in the near future.

called for a torch applied system on the wooden canopy, but Flynn was

MONCTON BRANCH HOSTS SOPREMA SERVICE TRAINING

he Atlantic Provinces kicked off the New Year with cold applied training by Soprema. Service technicians
from the three Atlantic offices attended the event in the Hub city. The training was a definite hit and the men gained a lot of “Cold Applied” knowledge with both

TOUGH ACCESS AT AUTO EXCELLENCE Toronto Branch roofers meet challenges

on every job, but the main issue on this one was access. With the site being on a school property, there was virtually no room to set up or store anything – except on the roof. All materials or equipment that came to site had to be hoisted to the roof immediately upon arrival making this area extremely congested. All other trades had to use the roof as well including Flynn’s own glazing division. Trade crews had to work very closely together to co-ordinate their efforts.

SAINT JOHN HOSPITAL PHASE 5 Moncton Branch roofing crews have worked hard through the winter months to complete this 40,000 square foot project. When Avondale Construction called on Flynn to accelerate installation of the roof, Halifax Branch did not hesitate to help Moncton's forces with a roofing crew to meet the general contractor's construction schedule. Once the final touch-ups have been completed, the Moncton crew will set-up on another ro o f i n g p ro j e c t , which is located on the same site! SASKATOON FIREHALL # 8 – A DONE DEAL Saskatoon Branch was successful in obtaining the subcontract to supply and install more than 3,400 squ a re feet of hidden fastener cladding and an a d d i t i o n a l 6,400 square feet of corrugated metal cladding on this project. In addition crews installed m o re than 9,700 square feet of Bueskin SA vapour barrier and Styrofoam SM insulation.General Contractor on the project was Quorex Construction.

A BEHEMOTH ROOF ON SHOPPERS DRUG MART CORNWALL
T
he Toronto Ottawa Branch Roofing Divisions began this
project in January and is projected to complete the work early in the spring. The project is an excellent example of teamwork as Toronto and Ottawa crews work together on the 550,000 square foot mechanically fastened TPO behemoth in Cornwall, Ontario. The lead foreman is Luis Martins, a master applicator, and his 10 man crew, are working alongside the 5 man crew from Ottawa led by foreman Aaron Cri b b. Despite the winter elements, they push

forward to complete this major project - as one. As long as our men continue to make safety our first priority we can accomplish any task.
