PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE US Expansion Plans Hello everyone, A lot of you have been asking to hear more about our US expansion plans, which I talked about in recent Straight Talk messages. Well…I’m happy to report that back on June 2nd, we officially concluded our first merger with Sellers & Marquis/A2MG, who have two offices and in excess of 300 employees, located in Kansas City and Springfield, Missouri. Our strategy requires us to understand the difference between a merger and an acquisition. A merger is when a company becomes part of Flynn and current leadership stays on board and grows with the company. An acquisition is when a company becomes part of Flynn, but the current ownership is motivated mainly as an exit strategy, and they move onto retirement. Our initial plan for this phase of expansion into the US is to focus on merging with companies where the leadership wants to grow the business in their region, and who also have a compatible culture and set of values. This is very important, especially when it comes to how the company treats its people. I can’t imagine a better launching point than Jerry Schaefer and the rest of his leadership team, as well as all of the management staff and field forces at Sellers and Marquis! It is an amazing fit really. We are well into the integration phase of things in Missouri, and by all accounts, we are making progress every month. It is a lot of work to merge two companies together, that’s for sure. I am also pleased to report that we have a signed Letter of Intent with Traditional Roofing, a company based in Flagstaff, Arizona with an office in Phoenix as well. We have completed the due diligence phase with Matt Behmer, the current owner of Traditional, who sees Flynn as a perfect partner to realize his growth vision for him and his people in the Southwest Region of the US, and closed on this merger in October. I knew we had a great culture fit as soon as I read their company tagline “Roofers for Life” which appears on their promotional material. Now that’s pride in what you do! We think our timing is good to be entering the US market for a number of reasons: • Firstly, the US economy has been steadily improving for a while now, and all indications are that this will continue for the foreseeable future • Next, with the majority of companies in this space being owned by baby boomers, this presents some pretty interesting opportunities for a growth company like Flynn. We are currently working on a number of other opportunities throughout the US. The opportunities available to us at this point of our expansion plan far exceeds what we predicted would be available when creating our initial plan a year and a half ago. Flynn is just so uniquely positioned to grow in the US. We will continue this controlled and strategic plan for growth. I look forward to providing further updates as things progress for us. With an increase in large scale projects in the mid-west, comes an increase in demand for Project Managers. Bill Brown, an Estimator from Flynn Victoria worked on a Suncor Project in Edmonton with one crew from Victoria and one crew from Edmonton at two weeks on, one week off. William Kennedy, a Superintendent from Flynn St. John’s, looked after the Hudson Bay School with a sixman crew from Newfoundland for five weeks, and Serge LeBlanc, a Roofing Manager from Moncton, spent six weeks overseeing a job at a SaskPower maintenance centre re-roof in Saskatchewan.

Moncton can be slow at times and while other regions might be booming – having trained qualified workers and PM’s that can temporarily be brought into bigger markets that are more profitable is a great advantage that Flynn has. I wanted to prove that I could do a project like that and soon after that project I was promoted to Roofing Manager,” he said.
They have tested the machine on site and say the field worker response has been very positive.
Since starting with Flynn in March of 2012, LeBlanc has gone from Superintendent, to PM, to the Roofing Manager of Moncton, to the Roofing Manager of the Maritimes. “I don’t know that I could have done this within a company other than Flynn. The growth is very exciting,” he said. While there are most certainly advantages that come along with being a Mobile PM, like any position, there are a few challenges that come along with it as well. LeBlanc shared a few of his lessons learned. “The biggest challenge was coordination. You don’t know the suppliers and they all ship differently. I had a few weeks to figure things out. Of course, I needed assistance and information from the two local branches and that helped,” he said. “The work is the same whether here or there though. It’s getting used to how the GC’s work and how customers work differently.” Eventually, the plan is to have a group of PM’s that are mobile, and not specific to a crew or region, available to devote their time and expertise to large scale and monumental projects across the country. “I would recommend this to anyone who is interested. Flynn Sellers & Marquis, located in Kansas City with a branch office in Springfield, is the first company of the Flynn Group of Companies – U.S. Operations. It is the result of the merger of Flynn with A2MG, Inc. and its sister companies Sellers & Marquis Roofing and Sellers & Marquis, LLC.
A2MG has been a leader in architectural metal and glazing in the region for many years. FULL CIRCLE Rob Wentland, a Service Superintendent with Flynn Kelowna, has a folder of pictures from his visit to Sellers & Marquis back in 2008. Rob traveled to Kansas City to be trained on their spray-down roofing systems and says “they are the best I have seen when it comes to this type of roofing.” Who knew what the future would have in store then? EXPANSION OF THE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AT KANSAS UNIVERSITY ■■Submitted by Amanda Schaefer
In conjunction with Turner Constriction (GC), The West Campus in Lawrence, Kansas began early Fall 2013 and was recently completed in September. It is the one of the largest engineering testing buildings in the United States. The scope on Main Campus will be finished late Fall 2014. The entire campus is projected to finish Spring 2015. Flynn Sellers & Marquis provided glazing, metal, and roofing – a $2.54 million project. For roofing, the Main Campus needed 2-ply Firestone APP roof and the West Campus needed Firestone Fleeceback TPO membrane roof adhered in bonding adhesive.
For glass/metals, Centria Products (panels, integral louvers, window system) and Custom Fabricated Steel Sub-Framing was used for the Wall Panels.
FLYNN SELLERS & MARQUIS WINS SCHREIBER FOODS SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR AWARD IN INNOVATION! ■■Submitted by Amanda Schaefer
Flynn Sellers & Marquis is this year’s winner of Schreiber Foods’ Supplier of the Year Award in Innovation. Schreiber is the largest employeeowned dairy company in the world. Flynn Sellers & Marquis is the first company ever to win the award as an indirect supplier. They were nominated for the roof restoration of Schreiber’s David D. Nusbaum Plant in Clinton, MO. Schreiber was looking to replace the 86,000 square foot roof, which is 19 years old and was in substandard condition. Such a project would not only be extremely costly (over $1 million), but also cause a great disruption to production inside the dairy facility. Flynn Sellers & Marquis approached the project that allowed the roof deck to remain intact, therefore eliminating the need for interior protection as part of the food safety plan. This restoration, without a complete tear-off, saved over $600,000. Bluefin, LLC provided consultation for the process and quality control over-site. The process consisted of the removal of wet insulation, followed by a Gaco Western wash to existing EPDM roof and application of E-5320 primer. Next, S-2000 was rolled on at 2 gallons per square and Gaco walk pad was installed at 4 gallons per square. Gaco Western and Flynn Sellers & Marquis guaranteed the roof with a 15 year Labour & Material Warranty.

SASK POWER MAINTENANCE CENTRE

The Moncton branch was asked to do a project in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. A crew of 10 arrived in the spring to get started this 740 Square re-roof. With the help of the two Saskatchewan Branches and a trailer full of equipment, the project got underway.
MONCTON
Flynn was awarded this complex re-roof in late 2013. Carried out in two phases – Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 – this project consisted of tearing off the existing BUR system, replacing 75 per cent of the steel deck, Densdeck, Sopravap’R, adhered tapered ISO, adhered Sopraboard, torched base and cap. The crew had to work on a very congested roof that included various plant equipment, pipes and supports. The Fall portion was completed by Roger LeBlanc and his crew while the spring portion was completed by Roger Savoie and his Fredericton crew. The project is now complete on budget and with a satisfied costumer.

TEAM WORK FOR NEW CANADIAN TIRE ■■Submitted by Steve Pass
John Fleming and his crew stand proudly in front of the new Canadian Tire store in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The project consisted of 22,000 sq ft of insulated panels in both foam and fire rated. In a summer that has proven to be a very busy one for Flynn Halifax, crews were dispatched from both Sudbury and Winnipeg to assist with the installation of the panels. John Fleming and his crew were sent in at the end of the job to complete the remaining work once again leaving a satisfied customer. John Fleming and Darren Collins have been travelling throughout the Atlantic area over the past few months to give that “added push” to projects as needed. Keep up the great work guys!

SUCH A ‘PURDY’ PROJECT

The Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts will be the first Mount Allison University building visitors see when they arrive in the town of Sackville, New Brunswick. The Centre provides striking visual impact as you approach the campus along Main Street and will energize the Fine Arts and Drama programs at Mount A. For Flynn, the project consisted of 13000 sq ft of ETERNIT fibre cement panels and 7000 sq ft of ACCUMET composite aluminum panels. Working closely with EllisDon utilizing limited laydown areas for material and congested areas for equipment, our crews did a very professional job on the installation. Once again, in 2014 Flynn Moncton was successful in being awarded the re-roof contract for Irving Paper Mill in St. John, New Brunswick. This is a yearly re-roof program that is directly related to scheduled maintenance shut downs of their paper machines to ensure roof work does not interfere with the production of the mill. This year, the work was in conjunction with the shutdown of PM#2 and consisted of 124 squares with majority of that directly above the paper machine. Work consisted of removing to deck a built up system with 3˝ foam glass insulation, installing Densdeck, Mop base, 3˝ ISO, 2 layers recovery board, mop base and torch cap. The scheduled shut down period for PM2 was five days. All areas that weren’t above the machine were completed prior to shutdown to ensure all efforts and resources were focused on a successful rip and re-seal of the sensitive area under a very tight schedule. Below is message from Plant Maintenance Manager Joe Hicks: Hi Eric, Again this year I’d like to congratulate you and your crew on a great performance in completing the roof replacement over PM2 without incident or safety issue. Completing the roof removal during the shutdown period of PM2, with a rain day thrown in, was a great accomplishment which really set up a successful project.

After a long Newfoundland winter and spring, Russell Martin (Foreman), Cole Martin and Ryan Martin completed Granite Paver installation of approximately 1500 pavers installed on pedestals. Dennis Butt, William Kennedy, Cole Martin, Russell Martin, Dale Parsons and Mike White installed the first Flynn Green Roofing System in the province Newfoundland and Labrador! In addition, they are also installing a wood paver tile boardwalk on levelling pedestals which is another first for the area.

In conjunction with PCL, Flynn crews are busy working on Tanger – an outlet mall consisting of nine different buildings with a combined total of 3730 squares. JENNY HILL RECEIVES ASTM INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP In October, Jenny Hill travelled to New Orleans to collect her prize for the prestigious ASTM International graduate scholarship. Jenny is a PhD Candidate at the University of Toronto and her work, researching how green roofs manage storm water, is sponsored by Flynn. ASTM International is an organization that facilitates the development of technical standards and in making this award, are recognizing the diversification of building materials and growth of sustainable design practices. REMEMBERING DIRK SCANLAN

In conjunction with PCL Ottawa (and assistance from MC Cladding and various Ottawa crews) this multi-scope project required the installation of approximately 62,000 square feet of Alum Panels and 20,000 Square feet of Siding. Materials used included Alum Composite panels by Alpolic and Metal Siding. The building area is over 3-4 acres in size.

It is with deep sadness that the Sudbury Branch announces the passing of Dirk Scanlan (59) on September 21st, 2014 after a long illness. Dirk worked in the Glazing Division at the Sudbury Branch for many years both as an installer and fabricator. He attended FUFL in 2012 which was an accomplishment he was very proud of. Dirk was a happy go lucky man. He lived his life his way and wouldn’t have changed a thing. He will be missed by all who had the opportunity to know him.

The project was met with numerous challenges which included: • Design Build scope having Flynn address difficult details to solve • Access to the areas (Pods) to be worked on was in excess of 150 -200 feet in the air. Scaffolding these areas was a challenge along with craning material to the platforms. Timing when material would arrive on site for areas proved to be difficult. • There was very specific additional design requirements that needed a different approach to solve and meet PCL’s requirements.

The Winnipeg Branch teamed up with PCL on yet another multi-scope project. The scope of work consisted of 177 squares of floor deck complete with nelson studs, 396 squares of roof deck, 376 squares of SBS roofing, 140 squares of corrugated cladding/soffit and 77 squares of Accumet 2000 soffit. Once completed, the new 100,000 sq ft facility will house a state-of-the-art indoor running track, a 40-foot climbing wall, a social gathering area for students, a strength and conditioning room, and a group workout area.

With two local Boston Pizza restaurants due for a face lift, our metals department was placed with the time sensitive task of installing face fastened Prodema Prodex Rustik cladding, while each store closed for a one week time frame to facilitate the renovations. Installers were Jason Clarkson, Jason Walsh (Foreman), Jamie Smith (Foreman) and Derek Swerdyliak.
Additional work included exterior glazing modifications and miscellaneous interior glazing. Installers were Igor Gerachshenko (Foreman) and Dave MacDonald. For Service Roofing repairs, installers were Joel Nozick (Foreman) and Hiker Arzate-Galeana.

Tomasz Bak and his crew have battled high winds, heavy rains and both hot and cold temperatures while completing 542 squares of MOD BIT roofing. Superstore’s local management has had nothing but praise for Tomasz Bak and his crew’s commitment to both jobsite and customer safety.
Flynn is pleased to be working for Clark Builders on the Suncor Fort Hills Mount Logan Lodge project building the new operators camp facility, 100 kilometres north of Fort McMurray. With help from the Victoria Branch and Edmonton crews, we dealt with the task of installing 918 squares of SBS roof system. The site is a high safety environment and the crews did an excellent job adhering to the safety requirements. Both crews were put in a highly decked out camp accommodation facility while working on the project. Camp included the use of two movie theaters, two full-sized gymnasiums, two squash courts, a games room, golf simulator, on-site convenience store, chef prepared meals with a market-style cafeteria and even an on-site Tim Hortons! Good work, boys!

Our Flynn Regina Crews from all Divisions are once again put to the test with this multi-scope project consisting of 304 squares of SBS Roofing, 489 squares of Hot Rubber Waterproofing, 205 squares of Metal Decking, 33 squares of Curved Standing Seam Roofing, 103 squares of Metal Cladding, and 33 squares of Architectural Panel. With multiple trades on this site, we have had to work side by side and in sequence with the trades. This has been a frustrating task at times, but once again our Flynn Crews are managing to maintain a safe and Professional Job site no matter what has been thrown at them. This project will continue into 2015. We would like to thank all crews involved for their hard work and dedication on this project!

When a long-time client of Flynn came to us to help design the envelope for their the new office addition, our team was up to the challenge. In doing so, the Winnipeg Branch was able to incorporate FlynnWall into the project, for its first installation in Manitoba! The scopes of work consisted of over 30 squares of stick framed curtain wall complete with reflective glazing and miscellaneous interior glazing, 32 squares of steel roof deck, 32 squares of ballasted EPDM roofing, and 6 squares of standing seam metal roofing.

UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA PAW (PHYSICAL ACTIVITY & WELLNESS CENTRE) â– â– Submitted by Connie Applin
This project consists of 456 squares of new inverted Tremco TRA roofing. The crew picture was taken on top of the cone roof installing a Tremco SBS for the new climbing wall. The crew did a great job installing the roof system with a challenge of a roof slope of approximately 20 per cent.

The PAW Centre will be a new physical activity and wellness facility including a campus fitness centre, a world-class climbing centre, and a variety of student service spaces. The project will also include a new social street, which will provide an interior connection between multiple buildings.
NO LOST TIME Our Regina Branch recently celebrated 1000 days without a lost time injury and as of September 13, 2014 has just passed three years without a lost time injury! CELEBRATING SAFETY – ST. JOHN’S AFTER YEARS IN THE TOP 5 – ST. JOHN’S TAKES THE TROPHY AND THE TITLE AS THE SAFEST BRANCH IN THE COUNTRY On Thursday, August 28th, Flynn St. John’s, Newfoundland was ready to celebrate their 2014 Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award win! Since the inception of the award, St. John’s has placed in the top five every year, even coming in second place twice. So how did it feel to finally take it home? “It feels fantastic. It’s a wonderful achievement and I am very proud of everyone who was part of it,” said Anthony Upwards, St. John’s Branch Manager. “Winning the award, and placing in the top five every year takes total team buy in from labourer to management. They all just do it on their own,” he said. There’s no denying the people of St. John’s have just as much team spirit as hospitality and culture. Before their celebration began, the team gathered in the parking lot for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (see page 38 for more on this) in temperatures barely above the single digits. After drying off, everyone boarded busses waiting in the Flynn parking lot and the festivities were officially in motion. The first stop was the Newman Wine Vaults where they learned about the history of Port wine aging followed by the sample of the Newman’s Port, a practice dating back to 1679. In the Vaults, they were also treated to a sampling of gourmet handmade chocolates from the Newfoundland Chocolate Company. Next, it was off to Quidi Vidi Village – a Portuguese fishing village with a popular microbrewery where refreshing samples were tasted. One stand-out beer was the Iceberg which is brewed with 25,000 year-old water harvested from the Newfoundland Icebergs!

Aside from having the safest branch in the country, St. John’s also happens to have the most bars and pubs per capita than any other city in the country. Most of those bars and pubs are located on “George Street” – the last stop of the evening. There was a traditional fish and chips dinner at O’Reilly’s, before the unveiling of the award at “Dusk” and a traditional “screech-in” ceremony for the “mainlanders” or the people not from the Island. For this ceremony, Doug Flynn and Sean Wurster among others, ate a piece of baloney (or “Newfoundland Steak” as others joked), took one shot of Screech (Newfoundland rum), recited a special poem, and kissed a cod fish making them honorary Newfoundlanders. The group, which was being led by a saxophonist, was then treated to an Irish step-dancing lesson and performance, a Newfoundland sing-a-long, and the live music of “Tino Borges and the Incident” at The Martini Bar before heading home. “We all had a great time. It was nice to see everyone out and about outside of our work setting,” said Anthony. Where does a branch holding the number one spot go from here? “We’re going to try to avoid the trap of complacency and keep trying to improve one day at a time. Good luck to anyone else trying to win the award. It’s not going to be easy because we really want it back,” Anthony said. MLMR SYNCRUDE ■■Submitted by Connie Applin
Flynn Industrial is nearing the completion of the MLMR project at the Syncrude site North of Fort McMurray. This project started out with module work at Kiewit’s mod ward in West Edmonton as a sub to Colony Management INC. In September 2013, Flynn Industrial mobilized to the Syncrude site to assist tying in the modules clad in the Edmonton yard as well as install the remaining wall cladding and roof systems on the screenings and Trim heater buildings. These buildings are in the heart of an operating plant congested with pipe racks and miles of cable trays and process equipment making accessing the work fronts challenging to say the least. Once on site, Kiewit increased our scope to assist them closing in their electrical mods installing gutters downspouts and closing in penetrations, as well as installing the cladding systems on two large tanks. We have been running a continuous shift maintaining 50 men at all times, with Dave Luscombe and Keith Hepditch sharing the role of site supervision on alternating shifts.

After completing the North Wing Business Park with Flynn last year, Chandos site Superintendent Scott Price asked his office to get Flynn involved in his new project - a multi-building shopping facility in the Northwest. The winner of the competition would earn a spot on the Canadian Olympic Team. The competition featured a few Olympians and Arthur had a great competition placing 15th out of 29.

Halifax has long been known as a shipbuilding city. From its founding in 1749, it has been an extremely busy port. With the announcement of the federal shipbuilding program being awarded to Halifax, the shipyard has been revitalized! EllisDon has awarded Flynn Halifax with roofing and cladding contracts for two facilities, one in Dartmouth and one in Halifax. In total, the roofing contract calls for the installation of approximately 375,000 sq ft of Sarnafil Roofing. The cladding portion of the project entails approximately 400,000 sq ft of barrier series sandwich wall system. A challenging project, our crews are battling an aggressive schedule, a congested site, and typically unpredictable Nova Scotia weather. Project Manager Jeff Spurrell and his team, including Roofing Foreman Chris Huybers, Cladding Foreman Greg Nickerson, Project Coordinator Neil Culligan, Roofing Superintendent Mike James, Roofing Manager Serge Leblanc, Metals Manager Steve Pass and Atlantic Region Architectural Manager Monty Hill, are pushing through all obstacles to achieve a successful completion of this high profile project. 35 YEARS OF SERVICE: DUANE HUMBLE ■■Submitted by Flynn Regina
Duane Humble,a father, a dedicated Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, and Foreman at Flynn Regina, was honoured for his 35 years of service at this year’s Annual Safety Award Dinner held in the Spring. Duane is a valuable asset to the company and a mentor to the countless new Service Technicians coming into the Service Department with whom he shares his years of knowledge and skills as a certified Interprovincial Journeyman Roofer.
Duane is highly skilled in the art of tracking down leaks. Many customers ask for him by name. No matter what time, whether it’s day or night, Duane is there to help. His customer relation skills are great and he can always back-up his words with his diligent work. A few favorite “Duaneisms” from the team can be found on his drawings handed in for his jobs. “How I would install skylight curbs if it were my building (But I don’t own any buildings. And if I did, I wouldn’t put any skylights in it.”) “To repair that, I estimate the cost to be at least a gajillion dollars”.
Duane’s father, Peter, opened Queen City Roofing with his brother, Larry at the helm. Duane and his brother, Kevin worked in the field. It didn’t take long for the Humbles to make an impression on Flynn with their strong work ethic and skill. Flynn acquired Queen City Roofing in 2001 and the team that had built it.

As part of its ongoing efforts to prepare the company’s facilities to build Canada’s future combatant ships, Irving Shipbuilding has established a working model with Aboriginal groups, specifically the Mi’kmaw Economic Benefits Office of Nova Scotia (MEBO) to identify skills that will be required prior to contract award decisions being made to encourage the engagement and employment of Nova Scotia Aboriginals. MEBO is a Mi’kmaq economic development organization that works for all 13 First Nation communities in Nova Scotia. MEBO builds relationships with large industry works to understand their needs and works to help fill those needs through training and support. CONGRATULATIONS, ALLAN! Allan Brush attended the 39th Annual Canadian Convention and Roofing Apprenticeship Competition held in Windsor, Ontario in the spring. The weekend was broken up into three testing sections: A. Theory: This consisted of a 3.5 hour exam with 100 multiple choice questions divided into sections on materials, tool and equipment - trade theory, and safety. B. Built-Up Roofing 2-ply: Participants had 3.5 hours to complete their own 2-ply Modified Built-Up Roof. C. PVC System: Participants had 3.5 hours to do their own Built-Up PVC system. Allan received first place, $750 and the Fred Poitras Trophy presented by Joseph Sellers, General Secretary Treasurer, SMWIA (left) and Marc Curtis, 9th General Vice President and Business Manager of Local 276 in British Columbia (right). CONGRATULATIONS JEAN BERNARD After 48 years in the construction industry, Jean Bernard, 70, decided it’s officially time to retire. “I knew it was going to be hard to say goodbye,” said Jean, who also says he has been fortunate enough to have missed one or two days of work since he started. “I always look forward to my daily site visit. I’ll miss the people the most – people that I worked with and people that I met and dealt with and got through the challenges of jobs with. We have a really great team here. I’ll also really miss Doug. He always takes times to talk to me – even if it’s just hello. And it’s not just time to talk; it’s time to listen. That’s rare. I wish I would have been part of Flynn many years ago. He cares so much about people – it really shows and it meant a lot to me. “ Jean’s first job in the workforce was in 1965 with General Motors in Oshawa, Ontario in a Maintenance position. His curiosity would oftentimes lead him to pay brief visits to the siding guys doing work on the building…and his curiosity paid off. When GM went through a series of layoffs one year later, Jean went to talk to late Lou Zosky at Westeel Rosco and got a job on that building! In the early 1970’s during his stay at Westeel Rosco, Jean supervised high-rise towers. The first tower he worked on was Poole Construction, now known as PCL, and many towers after that in downtown Toronto such as Scotia Plaza, the Eaton Centre and the RBC Tower - just three of many big jobs on his very impressive resume. Jean always kept a record and logged detailed daily entries in his personal journals for every job. In his journals, Jean has a record of the quantity of deck and stud installed with his crews which is now just over 1 million!!! From Westeel Rosco, Jean spent the rest of his years working with Vicwest before Flynn took over the Contracting Operations of Vicwest in Ontario in 2005. Looking back on his career, his favourite job was with Flynn working on the Novi Hospital in Michigan. “I was in the States for the first time and I had new people working with me... they had done very little siding work and no work with Prodema product. It was a challenge - a training session for other people…but I always say if you’re willing to learn then I’m willing to train you,” he said. Jean worked on projects in Michigan for a total of three years. As a well-known professional who has left a big mark on the Sheet Metal Industry, Jean has also left a big impact among colleagues and friends here at Flynn.

“Jean is very well-liked throughout the company. He is shining example of how to lead by example,” said President and CEO, Doug Flynn. He has been a great influence on so many here since joining Flynn and is a natural Mentor and Coach. We’ll miss seeing him around but we’ll be sure to keep in touch.” Jean's fondest memories include being able to move onto bigger projects after proving his abilities on the smaller ones, and garnering respect from General Contractors. Customers started asking for Jean by name for their next big job which made him proud. “Good communication and relationships with the GC and having respect for employees is what really makes for a good supervisor,” he said. “You should return every call whether it’s good news or bad news.” Jean said you also have to do the job in a safe manner. He has seen drastic improvements to safety throughout the course of his career, but he has also witnessed five deaths (none at Flynn) and has never forgotten about them. “Working safely is good not only for yourself and family, but for the company. If you have a good record, you’ll be asked back again.” It is clear Jean has many accomplishments in his professional life and many in his personal life too. In 1967, he began competing in Arm Wrestling and Powerlifting competitions and did very well. When he was working on a job in Dryden, Ontario, there was no gym in town. Dan Sims’ father was the principal at the local high school at the time and allowed him to use it after hours. Jean has a gym at home now and continues to have his workouts. In his retirement, Jean looks forward to living at his cottage in Muskoka River, Bracebridge, with his wife, Lynn, and their two cats after recently selling their home in Barrie. Jean met his wife, Lynn, while working in Timmins in 1977 and they married in 1986. They have a daughter Natalie, born in 1981, and a granddaughter, Serena Rose, who is 16 months old. Jean plans to spend more quality time with them as well as more time on his woodworking. “I wish everyone at Flynn the very best. I will miss getting up at 4 a.m. and driving in. When Pete Taylor was here, he took a picture of the speedometer on my Flynn truck. Pete said some of the guys out west have 200,000 km on theirs. Do you know what mine has? 540,000 km. I’ve been driving it for a while, and now it’ll retire with me,” he said. From all of your friends at Flynn, Congratulations Jean Bernard!

Stratford Hall is an independent coeducational school and is Western Canada's only complete International Baccalaureate educational facility. Flynn has been involved in the construction process of previous buildings. Omicron selected Flynn to look after the interior and exterior glazing at their new facility. The Glazing Team consisted of Fernando Raguero, John Ngo, Speedy and Bruce Leckie at the office. The field forces were split into exterior glazing led by Piotr Slowinski and interior glazing led by Jessi Castellarin. The interior and exterior crews went to work, assisting each other as and when required, overcoming the site challenges posed to them to end up with a quality project delivered on time. CANADIAN FORCES BASE ESQUIMALT BUILDING 250 ■■Submitted by Gary Stride
The Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Breton (Building 250) is an integral part of the Maritime Forces Pacific's Ship Repair Unit. This building is in the midst of a multi-year, multimillion dollar renovation, expansion and modernization. In this phase, Mike Pilling and crew are currently removing the existing exterior cladding, insulation and the interior liner panels in preparation for one of several additions.

Darren Brown and crew are looking after the roofing aspect of this large multi-scope project within the active Military Base. The current phase of work concerns re-roofing around multiple areas on the rooftop where new miscellaneous structural steel projects through. Future work will include new roofing on additions to the structure. The crew is occasionally forced off the roof to comply with Navy RadHaz Safety Protocols involving the transmission of Electromagnetic Radiation for the various warship's Navigational and Weapons systems electronics. Communication is key on this site as there are numerous other sub-contractors, Military Personnel and Civilian Defence workers over the entire site. This massive project is one of several ongoing phases to the modernization of CFB Esquimalt.

This new construction project (Architectural Products) is in conjunction with PCL. Flynn supplied the install of Vapour Barrier, Subgirt, and 5'' Roxul Insulation covering approximately 38,000 sq ft consistent of approximately 5000 sq ft of Aluminum Composite Panel, 14,700 sq ft of Westform HF 12 Steel Siding, 15,400 sq ft of Westform 7/8 Corrugated Cladding, 200 sq ft of Longboard Aluminum siding and 2,900 sq ft of Coulson preengineered wood siding.
This multi-scope new construction mixed use commercial/residential structure consists of SBS roofing, application corrugated aluminum panels, perforated aluminum sheet, miscellaneous aluminum flashings and T&G Western Red Cedar. This ocean front structure hosts a sail making facility (a “loft”) on the main floor and two high-end residential suites on levels two and three.

This Elementary School turned 100 years old while Geoff Myers and crew were re-roofing portions of the original structure and constructing new roofs. The local School District relocated the teachers, staff and students for one year to allow the General Contractor to gut the school and carry out a major seismic upgrade to the structure. Quadra School is one of hundreds on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland of BC to undergo seismic upgrades.

Flynn has been involved with the construction of three buildings on this business campus. At the heart of Flynn's involvement is Cliff Clarkson who has been the site Foreman who led the Flynn forces on the simultaneous construction of Broadway Tech 5 & 7, and later Broadway Tech 4. When Stuart Olson awarded the contract to Flynn for Broadway Tech 6, the construction duties and responsibilities were delegated, once again, to Cliff Clarkson and his crew. Kimiko Nakano did her drafting magic and with John Ngo, Jose “Speedy” Goncalves and Earl Anonby quarterbacking Cliff and his crew, a touchdown was inevitable. The main feature of the building is the radiused segmented South entrance canopy soffit. Shane Mackay used his surveying skills to establish layout point and John Ngo converted these layout points into panels using AutoCAD. The concept of building panels without actually being field tape measured led to some anxious moments, but once the panels showed up the moment of truth had arrived. Cliff and his crew went to work, installed the panels and Cliff did not even get to use his NEW electronic distance finder / tape measure. The overall support provided to Cliff in combination with his infectious optimism and crew leadership facilitated the overall success of this project. Cliff now has four Broadway Tech's under his belt. Great job by everyone involved!

OUR TRIBUTE TO MARK STONE

Prelude City Homes is a new 52-unit condo project on the Cambie St. corridor in Vancouver, scheduled for completion in 2014. Ventana Construction Corporation awarded the composite panel supply and installation subcontract to Flynn.
It with great sadness that the Vancouver branch announces the passing of Mark Stone, 47, on August 15th, 2014. Mark became part of the Flynn team when DHS (the company he originally worked for) became part of Flynn in 2004. For over 24 years he mastered his craft and became known as the guy that “can fix everything to do with the Trim Shop”. He trained people who wanted to learn, he mentored those who wanted to lead, but more importantly; he took every opportunity to learn something new.
Kimiko Nakano started the project rolling with the drafting of shop drawings. Del Hernandez, Jose “Speedy” Goncalves and Ryan Young completed the office support team for Azmir Hadzovic and his field crew to see the job through to completion. The crew with their great attitude towards safety, quality and production soon developed a good rapport with the General Contractor which helped to facilitate the various challenges typical of a construction site. Furthermore, the reputation established by the Flynn team on this job led to the opportunity to bid the Prelude neighboring Ventana project and, once again, Ventana Construction Corporation selected Flynn for the supply and install the composite panel portion of the project. Way to go TEAM.

As a co-worker, if you needed help he was always there and if you wanted something fixed – well, he was the guy to go to. To this day, at the tip of our tongues, if a piece of machinery went down; we still almost say, “Call Mark.” Outside of work, when we think of Mark Stone we think of the “outdoors,” as that was his real passion. He loved the outdoors so much that he spent every free moment he could outside, whether it was 4x4-ing, rock climbing, camping, and of course fishing – rain or shine, hot or cold; it did not matter.
There is a little known fact that he got Ken Smith addicted to fishing by bringing him out to the river many years ago and it was an addiction Ken couldn’t shake to this day. In addition to loving work and the outdoors, Mark was a real family man who loved his wife Alana, and three kids, Steven, Amber, and Trevor so much. You could tell how much he loved them just by the way he spoke of them, protected them, and provided for them. To many of us, Mark was a mentor, a friend, and someone whose ingenuity we admired. Oftentimes you hear people talk about how great someone is when they have passed, but Mark is truly someone everyone would agree “is a great guy” and he will be deeply missed.

IN THE COMMUNITY FLYNN TORONTO BBQ The Toronto Social Committee pictured below planned a Flynn BBQ on August 19th which carnival style games and treats, and dunk tank with the opportunity to dunk some managers who volunteered to be on the list at the cost of $2.00 per ball, or $5.00 for three balls. At the end of the event, Flynn was able to donate $3,705 to the Children’s Wish Foundation. Great job, everyone!
FLYNN FLYERS RIDE AGAIN ■■Submitted by Don Delaney
In June, the Flynn Flyers once again took part in the Epic Ride to Conquer Cancer, a two day 200 km+ cycling ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls, Ontario. The event is held annually to raise money for cancer research. This year, the Flyers were able to raise more than $10,000, part of more than $20 million raised by all 5,200 participants!

SAFETY WALK
Ian Adds (pictured below, left) started cycling two years ago, and from July 28th to August 1st, he took on his biggest challenge to date embarking on a 500 km ride from Port Hardy to Victoria, Mile 0 – the entire length of Vancouver Island! Ian accomplished a huge goal, and managed to raise $650 for the BC Cancer Foundation in the process! The BC Cancer Foundation works with The BC Cancer Agency to provide screening, prevention and early detection programs, diagnosis and treatment services, supportive care, rehabilitation, palliative care, research and education throughout British Columbia. Great job, Ian!

Danny Amaral from our Flynn Toronto Roofing Service Crew, helped a driver fix a flat tire on Highway 407. As it turned out, that driver was a customer and submitted a formal letter expressing his appreciation and gratitude for Danny’s assistance. Great job!

IN THE COMMUNITY ICE, ICE BABY
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge began garnering media attention during the first week of July, 2014. The challenge encourages participants to share a video of an ice cold bucket of water being dumped over their head, and nominate three other people/groups to do the same. Its main purpose is to promote awareness of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and encourage donations for research. The height of the challenge’s popularity was from July 1st to September 1st. During this period, the ALS Association managed to surpass $100 million dollars in donations – a 3,500 per cent increase from the $2.8 million the ALS Association raised during the same time period last year in 2013!
While the West was busy getting wet, the East Coast decided to get in on the action too. Doug Flynn received multiple nominations, including one from Steve Murphy in Vancouver and Jocelyn Hogue of Toitures Hogue in Montreal. While Doug was in St. John’s for the Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Awards (see more on page 22), the branch came together to get the job done. Their video can be viewed at http://youtu.be/h7kUtjghr78 and, in combination with our Social Media Channels, it has been viewed more than 4000 times! St. John’s decided to nominate the Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award runners up, Sudbury and Cambridge!
On Friday, August 22, 2014 Andrew Ellis got the ball rolling on this challenge for Flynn Edmonton after being nominated by Tony Robinson of Kingspan. It was a great day and everyone had a great time. Even the local newspaper The Spruce Grove Examiner was out to take a few pictures and interview Andrew and Art Bundschuh. Edmonton raised an impressive total of $1000.00 and nominated the Calgary branch to take the plunge. Edmonton’s video can be seen at http://youtu.be/83Zo4PKCLDE Sudbury took a creative approach, and dumped bags of ice into a swimming pool and jumped in it just after nominating their friends at Flynn Ottawa.
On Tuesday, August 26th the Calgary Branch followed, completing their ALS Ice Bucket Challenge! They nominated the Winnipeg Branch. Photos were not yet available at the time of publication.

FLYNN MONCTON BRIGHTENS THE HOLIDAYS FOR MANY CHILDREN ■■Submitted by Eric Venoit
The Moncton Branch had a reroof project at a “Toys R Us” located in Regent Mall, Fredericton in the winter of 2013/2014. All regions experienced a difficult winter season with extreme snow amounts as well as heavy rains, and Fredericton was no exception to these conditions. That job unfortunately experienced a few leak issues resulting in damaged merchandise within the storage area. After months of negotiating, the Moncton Branch came to a settlement and took possession of merchandise (over $8000 retail value). Branch Manager, Eric Venoit did research in the Moncton area looking for a charity that would make the best use of all these toys. This led to Moncton Headstart Inc; a community based organization that provides children’s programs as well as assistance for handicap and underprivileged kids. Every year, they hold a program for three weeks in December called “Toy Land.” Parents register in advance and once registered, they are interviewed and chosen to participate in the program and are given an appointment to come to Toy Land and pick up toys for their children. They get to choose three toys for each child in addition to receiving hats, mittens,
puzzles or games, stocking stuffers and books. All items in Toy Land are new and still in their boxes and everyone helping with the Toy Land program are volunteers who stock toys through fundraising initiatives and private cash donations. Last year, they had raised a total of around $35,000 to stock the shelves! Flynn Moncton was proud to kick start their program for 2014 with two truckloads of toys. Moncton Headstart was overjoyed with the unexpected donation and said that it ensures the program will be a success this season. As well as toys, there were six car seats and two infant carrier car seats that they will use in their HandiBus service and other family assistance programs they have in place. It's nice to be able to turn a problem snow pile into a Christmas Smile! We are proud to be able to announce the launch of the Flynn Wiki site. The goal of this site is to create a central library of all of the Flynn field best practices and keep it in a central place for everyone to use and reference. The wiki site is available within the Flynn Network at http://wiki.flynn.ca
What is a wiki? A wiki is a living book of information which allows people to look up, add, modify, or delete how we do things.
Why a Flynn Wiki? We can gather ideas and share them all across the company to make us work safer, improve quality and work more efficiently.
Who is the Wiki For? It’s for all of our frontline leaders. • Estimators: Understand how a job can be bid more accurately. • Superintendents, Foremen and field workers: Know what types of tools and equipment are available to make your work easier. • Managers: Ensure your teams are working at peak efficiency. A lot of work has already been done to gather information and get this process started, but there is still so much to do. It will not be successful without the help of our front line leaders. Currently, the Wiki is available for everyone on the Flynn Network only. We have plans to make it available to all field staff moving forward with our mobile strategy. To contribute information to the wiki site, visit http://wiki.flynn.ca within the Flynn Network, and then press the “edit” button toward the top right hand corner of the screen as outlined in the picture below. Once you have saved your changes you will need to “check in” your changes. The changes will be reviewed, and once they are approved they will be available for everyone to see. FLYNN WINS CRCA ROOFING CANADA AWARD The Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA) announced Flynn as the recipient of its annual Roofing Canada Award for the Calgary West LRT Extension. The award was presented at the association’s Annual General Meeting on June 5, 2014 in Quebec City. The Calgary West LRT Extension consisted of the construction of six LRT stations that was completed in 2012. The stations consist of elliptical shaped copper standing seam, SBS Modified Bitumen and TPO roofs. “CRCA received seven excellent project entries this year and selecting one project to earn the award this year was extremely difficult,” said Bob Brunet, CRCA's Executive Director. This project will be highlighted in the Fall/Winter issue of Roofing Canada. The Roofing Canada Award recognizes a project completed by a CRCA member based on outstanding workmanship, innovation, service to the community and service to the industry. All entries were judged by their peers for their significant contribution to the roofing industry. Congratulations to everyone who took part in this project!

FLYNN SAFETY MANUFACTURING AWARD
Luis Soares, A Metals Foreman with Flynn Toronto, was busy working on the Ryerson Student Learning Centre, where safety, as always, is our top priority. At 6:15 a.m., Luis heard a woman screaming for help. He looked up and realized she was stranded on the roof the in front of the building that him and his crew were working on. He immediately called 911 and requested a rescue team. The situation is currently under investigation by the Toronto Police, but the woman was rescued by the Fire Department bringing a happy ending to a very serious situation. Luis’s quick actions have earned him the LifeSaver Award – an award that recognizes an individual who performs a life-saving activity to anyone in distress. Great job, Luis!
To recognize safety in manufacturing and to contribute to our safety culture initiative, each year Flynn Celebrates the Manufacturing Safety Award. This award will be presented to the Flynn manufacturing facility that has the highest performance in Health & Safety.
The metrics measured for this award include: • Medical Aid Injury Index • Lost Time Injury Index • Severity Index • Quality & Consistency of the JHSC Minutes – each facility must have a separate committee for manufacturing • Safety Evaluation Scores – Min. 1 per month – calculated as the best overall average for the year Congratulations to the 2014 winners, Flynn Edmonton!
