president’s message Connecting with YOU! By the time this edition of Flash is published I will have attended just over half of the Annual Branch Safety Meetings across the country. This year’s meetings were done a little bit differently and as you know, it was a voluntary event. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone again for attending – it is a true demonstration of your dedication to the company and to our Safety Culture and we very much appreciate it.

I have always enjoyed the Safety Meetings as it’s a great opportunity for me to communicate with all of you, and get your feedback. It is because of the feedback we’ve received from you at these meetings that we have focused on things like celebrating your everyday safe work practices by introducing the Don Flynn Pioneer Safety Award Competition and the Safety Star Program. It is also the reason why we have spent time improving communications for the field by developing your Extranet.

The Extranet, which we introduced in the December edition of the Flash, has been up and running for a few months now. So far, we’ve received a lot of positive feedback on it, and we’re adding new things all the time. However, I discovered at this year’s Safety Meetings that only a minority of people are reaping the benefits of this great tool.

Being a construction company, the majority of our workforce does not spend their days on a computer, so you might be asking yourself... why a website?

Well! – while the Flash has always been our vehicle for communicating with you, there are only a few issues printed each year. The Extranet is live and changing all the time – allowing us to share the most up to date news, information, and resources every day. The impact of technology has certainly changed (and improved!) the way we do business, and it’s not going to go away. I notice a lot of you Foremen were scared of the blackberries when you first received one, but now most of you would not give them up for anything! So let’s not be afraid to embrace technology.

With that in mind, I realize we have to crawl before we can walk. The Extranet is still new, and it’s going to take some time to get used to using it. If you haven’t seen it yet, I encourage you to check it out. Whether it’s you, your wife, or your kids that are logging on – there is a lot of great stuff on there.

LONG HARBOUR PROJECT IN ATLANTIC CANADA The Vale mine in Voisey’s Bay, Labrador is one of the richest Nickel deposits in Canada and is estimated to contain 141 million tonnes of 1.6% Nickel. The Long Harbour project involves the construction of a mine and concentrator in Voisey’s Bay, and processing facilities in Long Harbour, Newfoundland.

Flynn Industrial is currently working on six buildings on the site including the largest building East of Montreal – The Neutralization Building.

Construction began on site back in May 2011. In addition to the Neutralization Building, Flynn Industrial is also undertaking; • Fusing together the single ply roofing on 1500 pre-fabricated accommodations modules, brought in from Norway • Labour and installation of 300,000 square feet of roofing and wall panels on three process buildings onsite including; POL Utilities, Copper Electrowinning, and CD Removal Buildings. (General Contractor – Pennecon Energy) • Supply and installation of single skin cladding and modified bitumen roofing to the Lab building. (General Contractor - Lindsay Construction) • Supply and installation of single skin cladding and modified bitumen roofing to the Pump house. (General Contractor –Ravencor Projects) We have 69 Flynn field staff on the job including sheet metal workers, iron workers, and roofing crews. The majority of the workforce is from Newfoundland, but also present are workers from Nova Scotia, Ontario and Alberta. Great job, men!

UNIVERSITY IS TOUGH WORK! The St. John’s Branch has been working hard at University – on the roof! The roofing crew (shown below) is currently working on the roof of the Faculty of Medicine building at Memorial University.

FIRST TIME INSTALL FOR HALIFAX CREW The Halifax Branch Metals division is putting the finishing touches on the new Canadian Blood Services building in the Burnside Industrial Park in Dartmouth, NS.

great work guys!

This building represents the consolidation of the collection and distribution of blood products from Saint John, New Brunswick to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Primarily a metal cladding project, the building also features Fibre C panels installed in various interior rooms. This was the first time that we had installed the Fibre C panels on any project in the region. The facility will be open in Spring of 2012.

PRECISION OF WORK AND EXPERIENCE GOES A LONG WAY The Moncton Branch has been hard at work installing over 2000 lineal feet of new lead coated copper flashings and five fully lead coated copper soldered tubs for balconies on the Dominion building, a historic site located in the heart of downtown Moncton. The Toronto Branch has been lending a helping hand to train the Moncton crews on soldering lead coated copper. A big thank you goes out to Walter Amaral from Toronto Service for his exceptional workmanship and for taking the time to train the local Moncton crews on working with precious metals.

RBC IN NEW BRUNSWICK PART OF THE RBC 2012 ROOFING PROGRAM The Moncton Branch is hard at work on the RBC located in the Heart of Fredericton NB. This job is part of the RBC 2012 roofing program with Flynn, CBRE and Royal Bank.

Located at 504 Queen Street in the capitol city of New Brunswick there are some logistical hurdles to surpass. Foreman, Roger Savoie and Foreman, Graham Cole along with their crews have been progressing steadily and safely with as little disruption to the client as possible. Due to the tight site location, most of the moving of material and garbage to and from the site has taken place after hours. Roger and Graham have done an excellent job in coordinating the bins, cranes and parking accommodations on an hourly basis.

The facility consists of three different roof sections. The crew is installing a 15 year platinum two ply modified bitumen roof system by Soprema. The multiple level changes create for some interesting details, and with the experience of the crew, it will be picture perfect when complete.

FIRST ANNUAL FALL PRO EQUIPMENT INSPECTION The Halifax Branch held their first Annual Fall Protection Equipment Inspection at the beginning of this year. CREWS PULLED THROUGH, IN SPITE OF HIGH WINDS Kelowna Branch acted as the GC on the Real Canadian Whole Sale Club in Penticton, BC. The roof was deflecting to the point the trusses had to be reinforced. We used Ledcor as a Sub on this project. Kelowna Branch removed cladding, soffit and roofing in preparation for Ledcor to remove the decking and install the new trusses and plywood sheeting.

We then reinstalled roofing, soffit and cladding. This project moved along smoothly considering the high winds that all the trades endured. Great job guys!

WITH THE RAINY SEASON OVER, WE’RE BACK ON THE ROOF! Victoria Branch crew led by Chris Sitter poses for the lens after loading material in preparation for installing a new roof. This 90 square roof covers a new Drama Wing on an addition to an existing private school. Our crews are mobilizing after several weeks of "down time" as a result of the west coast rainy season. LOTS OF WORK AT THE KAL TIRE HEAD OFFICE IN KELOWNA The Kelowna Branch roofing crews began construction on the new Kal Tire head office roof in early 2012. The roofing system used for this project was a mechanically fastened TPO membrane finished off with a 24 gauge cap flashing. Kelowna branch will also be starting on the cladding scope of this project in the near future. Keep up the great work guys!

IMPRESSIVE WORK BY FLYNN VANCOUVER ON TMC A lot of planning on the part of the Vancouver Branch was put into fast tracking the Transportation Management Centre project and thanks to the team we’re making it happen. The first milestone was to have the second floor of the East building water tight which meant that three floors had to be completed in two months! The scope for this part of the building was mainly Curtain Wall and it was installed as 38 feet tall CW ladders and glazed on site. One hundred CW ladders went up for the East side. The framing was going in as fast as the shoring was coming down and was it ever impressive to watch! The West side of the building still poses a few challenges as we have to contend with the winter installation of a sloped metal roof that drains into a massive

OKANAGAN COLLEGE GETS A SOLAR PANEL MAKEOVER Kelowna Branch Crews worked to remove 60 feet of eyebrow in order to install energy efficient solar panels at the Okanagan College campus in Penticton, BC. In order to access the eyebrow crews had to dismantle the staircase tower, reinstall the dismantled Wall cladding and replace the notched cladding panels. They then had to cut off the eyebrow and prep the wall with required Self Adhesive Membrane and Sub girts to receive the new wall cladding. They finished the project with 32 feet of HF 12 Wall Cladding and all related flashings were then installed to complete the new look. Good work, men!

Shortly after work was completed we received a letter from Client expressing appreciation about the good workmanship Flynn was able to deliver and for the way the job was done.

EPDM lined steel gutter and we also have composite panels wall on four sides of the building detailed around window openings with reveal lines tying up all around to a sloped wall. Custom sunshades also still need to be installed. With a powerhouse crew on board, we’re excited to cross the finish line on the project. Thanks to the Team for doing such an excellent job!

Kelowna Branch is working on another install for Stonegate Construction on the Shoppers Drug Mart in Vernon BC. Dale Appleby and Ryan Jarl (shown in photo) are installing two eight foot sleepers, and one small wood curb into a Tar and Gravel roof. A cold applied system was used due to the poor access and power lines that are close to the building. Excellent work guys!

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES ON 11-STOREY BUILD Vancouver Branch was awarded the Fiber Cement Panel cladding component consisting of liquid applied waterproofing membrane, insulation and installation of fiber cement panels on the Mount Seymour Seniors Independent Residence. Site conditions are such that access and space are at a premium making material handling a primary challenge. To overcome this obstacle Flynn set up scaffolding with a material hoist on the relevant areas accessing all 11 floors. This allowed the liquid applied waterproofing membrane subtrade access and provided the Flynn crew the flexibility to follow behind with the various stages of substrate preparation work on various floors. The Flynn crew has proven to be up to the challenges Mount Seymour Seniors Independent

ALL HANDS ON DECK AT THE PACIFIC NAVAL FLEET’S BASE COMMAND POST

ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS FOR FLYNN VANCOUVER

This 46,000 square foot structural steel and reinforced concrete facility will house the Canadian Pacific Naval Fleet’s MARPAC Base Command Post. Victoria Branch did the roofing and waterproofing on the Emergency Response Centre and Fire hall which will be charged with post disaster environmental and civil emergency situations. Several Foremen have been assigned to this site over its duration due to scheduling priorities. ​Thanks to everyone who has been able to jump in to help out, you’ve all done a great job!

History has been made for the Vancouver Branch on the University of British Columbia’s Bio Energy building. With what is thought to be the largest single continuous panel installed by Flynn in BC at 181 feet, the crews of Brian Taylor and Bryce Young had to be extra careful with its install due to the size and delicate nature of the panel. With everyone working together the team installed the panel without damage leading to commendations to the crew from the architect and owner which may lead to an even bigger job down the way!

RE-ROOF NEEDED ON A PRE-WW1 BUILDING Victoria Branch’s Geoff Myers and crew have been dispatched to carry out a complete tear off and re-roof of 1710 Douglas Street – a multi-tenant, single-storey retail building in downtown Victoria. This building originally constructed prior to WWI had its last roof replaced when Wayne Gretzky led the Edmonton Oilers to victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on home ice in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs at the Northlands Coliseum.

CHALLENGES OF ROOFING DURING BUSINESS HOURS The Hamilton Branch has recently been hard at work on an RBC re-roof project in Oakville - a continuation of the RBC/CBRE National program. The system consists of 1200 square feet of Soprema’s two ply modified bitumen. The challenge on this job has been trying to minimize the amount of noise, dust and debris while still maintaining an operational bank and the crew has done an excellent job in doing that. Well done men!

SERVICE AND SHEET METAL TEAM UP IN KITCHENER The Kitchener Branch Service department in conjunction with the Sheet Metal department completed a section of the roof replacement at Novocol Pharmaceuticals. The project was a cold process Tremco roof which was time sensitive, involved,

NEW HOME FOR THE HAMILTON HARVEST BIBLE CHURCH The Hamilton Branch began work on the new home for the Harvest Bible Church in early March. This is a 60,000 square foot facility and the build consists of IKO two ply modified bitumen roof. There have been many challenges with the multi-level design and build scenario, so details have had to be adjusted and revised as the project develops. The roof portion of the project is expected to be completed in early April.

WOODSTOCK HOSPITAL PROFESSIONAL BUILDING The London Branch recently teamed up with Ellis-Don to get started on the Woodstock Hospital’s Professional Building in Woodstock, Ontario. Rui Medeiro’s crew started this job in March, and has already faced many challenges. With numerous HVAC units on top of the building and various trades to work around - the crew is successfully completing two different systems on this job. The first is a mechanically fastened densdeck, vapour barrier, and 3.3" of ISO insulation, finished off with the modified cap sheet. The second roof system is a loose laid EPDM. The crew is doing an excellent job of overcoming obstacles on this job, in addition to dealing with the complexities of working with two different systems. Well done men!

WHILE THE KIDS ARE AT SCHOOL…

IN THE KNICK OF TIME!

The Kitchener Branch recently took on a project for the Waterloo Catholic District School Board working with Tambro Construction. This was a two phase roofing project with 112 squares of re-roof and 48 squares of new construction. This project was all under taken and completed while the children were still in class. Excellent work boys!

The London Branch recently completed the roof on the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada expansion of their greenhouse, which will be used as a government testing facility. The roof system consisted of peel and stick vapour barrier on the roof deck, mechanically fastened ISO insulation, finished off with a modified cap sheet. The biggest challenge the crew faced on this job was time. They had only a few days to complete the system as the crew was set to go to the Bruce Power Plant right after completion.

MULTI SCOPE WORK ON THE MARKHAM COMMUNITY CENTRE The Toronto Branch is in the process of building a community center beside the Markham-Stouffville hospital. This multiscope community center will offer Markham a facility which will include a gymnasium with a running track on the second floor, a library, fitness area, a multi-use rehearsal area, a pool area with three pools including a waterslide and a splash pad.

On site, we have both glazing and roofing crews. Glazing has taken on the exterior and the interior of the building. The types of curtain wall used are mostly pre-glazed on the exterior, and

on the interior there are spider walls, doors and balustrade glass for stairs. The roofing crews are working hard to help keep the water out of the building. There are approximately 880 squares of roofing with roofing products like TPO and two ply. The metals division is not on site yet, but when on site they will be faced with a range of corrugated metal, aluminum panels, aluminum soffit panels and copper cladding. Thanks to everyone involved on this project, you’re doing a great job!

CHILLY WINTERS IN NORTHERN ONTARIO The Sudbury Branch recently completed 40,000 square feet of roof deck, 39,000 square feet of 4˝ Kingspan MF wall panel, and the installation of wall louvers for the Vale CORe Project in Sudbury. The crews had to face temperatures lower than –30 degrees Celsius to bring this project across the finish line, but were commended by the client on quality of their workmanship. Many thanks to the crew, Rej Rancourt (Foreman), Jason Rancourt, Andrew Pifer and Chris Watson – you did a great job!

FLYNN RESPONDS AFTER FIRE DAMAGES YORK UNIVERSITY The Toronto Branch’s metal workers worked alongside roofers for this York University reroofing project. After a large fire broke out at the University’s Utilities building they were left with extreme damages including a caved in roof area. The University decided that they would replace all of the roofing assembly including the steel deck. In the area where the fire occurred they even wanted to replace the steel trusses. This was extremely difficult because the Utilities Building is the main source of heat for the campus and must be kept running at all times and if that wasn’t challenging enough - the crew had to ensure that the building was water tight at all times.

Our boys proved they were up for the challenge and performed extremely well. Congratulations on a job well done, and keep up the good work!

FLYNN FEATURED ON THE COVER OF CANADIAN ROOFING MAGAZINE Recently, Canadian Roofing Magazine did a cover story on Rideau Hall – a historical project in Ottawa. All roofing elements were fabricated in Flynn shops and installed, including the ventilator in the photo below. We are excited to see one of our own - Gary St. Amour – hit the cover of the magazine, and be quoted by Canadian Roofing on this project as an “example of the fine work Flynn prides itself on”.

RAISING THE BAR ON A SCHOOL RE-ROOF PROJECT Challenged to replace an existing roof on an open and active Lakeside Public School in Ajax - the Toronto Branch’s roofing crew had to work diligently to ensure that this project was completed without disrupting the daily school activities. The re-roof consisted of adhered vapor barrier, ISO, fiberboard, 3 plies Burmastic composite Ply set in Burmastic SF, flood coat Burmastic and gravel.

This site had many restrictions and limitations which raised the safety bar even higher for the crew. They did an excellent job, and went above and beyond to ensure this job was completed safely and without disruption to the school. Nice work!

MAJOR OBSTACLES ON CUSTOM ROOF IN OTTAWA The Ottawa Branch’s metals crew was recently faced with the daunting task of completing the installation of membrane over custom fabricated aluminum tiles over the winter months. They faced a series of unforeseen delays which deferred the start date of the project, yet they still had a contractual obligation with the owners for 100% completion of the project by April 1. This forced the crew to complete the installations in approximately half the allotted time.

Solar Energy Project at Algoma Orchards Work is well underway at RESCo Energy’s (partner of Flynn’s) largest solar energy project to date (over 540kW, or 1,940 solar panels covering over 80,000 sq. ft.!). Flynn provided the building with a brand new “solar ready” 60‑mil EPDM loose laid and ballasted (over 100,000 sq. ft. covering four different roof sections). RESCo is providing full Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Maintenance services for this renewable energy producing project which will sell clean electricity to the provincial power grid. Flynn and RESCo worked closely to align construction schedules and share job-site resources.

STATE OF THE ART SCHOOL GOING “GREEN” IN AJAX The Durham Catholic School Board has put a large push on going “Green” with their facilities and their state of the art Lakeside Public School in Ajax is no exception. Among other features, in order to minimize heating and cooling costs in the facility a highly reflective White Calcite Gravel was installed which at times created difficulty.

Toronto roofing foreman Arlindo Neiva and crew completed this project on time and with positive reviews from both the school board and the general contractor.

THE LARGEST ROOF IN FLYNN’S HISTORY In November of this year, Flynn began work on a 1.4 million square feet (Yes - That’s 14,000 squares!) roof for the Target Warehouse in Cornwall, Ontario – the largest roof in Flynn’s history. The building is being roofed with a Sarnafil RhinoBond System, and is expected to be completed sometime this spring. This system is fairly new to many crews at Flynn, but has proven to be both quick and easy to install. With crews from the Ottawa Branch, Kitchener Branch, and Hamilton Branch there have been over 40 Flynn men working on this job at any given time. This has been a huge endeavor and an even greater accomplishment. We would like to thank the men for all their hard work and efforts, great job!

IN AND OUT METAL DECK INSTALLATION This multi-phase project has more than half of the Regina Branch’s total work force working on different phases of this Bennet Dunlop Ford car dealership’s expansion project. That’s three separate roofing production crews and two architectural metal crews that have all left their mark on this project. The crew in the photo below was only here for a half a day installing metal deck on a small addition (in and out!) Great work guys!

ANCHORS INSTALLATION ON THE FARM CREDIT TOWER Regina Branch recently did the install of 20 total anchors on the Farm Credit Tower (FCC) tiered roof levels 10, 11, 12. Working with a local anchor engineering and installation firm, they had to seal around all anchors once installed. Also completed was the removal and salvage of insulation and pavers; the addition of universal pipe boots at each anchor; the supply and install of 6" pressure sensitive cover strip to the flange of the boot and the reinstall of the insulation and pavers. Great work guys!

GM DEALER PANEL CREW COMPLETES ANOTHER ONE

NO RESTAURANTS? NO LODGING? NO PROBLEM!

We’ve lost count at the Regina Branch as to the number of GM dealerships this crew has completed of aluminum panel installations on remodeling jobs. Each one involves many hours of custom fabricating panels to fit the unique characteristics of the retrofit project. This crew had to stay out of town but was rewarded with reasonably warm weather this winter. Once again, Excellent job guys!

Working in Neudorf, Saskatchewan on the North Valley Elementary School, the Regina Branch crew had very little in the way of amenities. There were no restaurants, and no lodging in town, so the crew had to stay in the next small town over in Lemburg.

The small motel there was only just big enough to house the group. That was no problem for this crew, as they got over 100 squares of EPDM re-roofing completed in under 12 days. Great job!

WORKING AN ANGLE Driving into the East end of the city of Saskatoon you can’t help but notice how significantly the skyline has changed since the Saskatoon Branch’s metals department completed the Holy Family Cathedral. A building like this has a huge impact on the appearance of the city, being a flat prairie town. Using 316 squares of 22 gauge Accusteel, two layers of 4˝ Deckmate, vapor barrier and over 8,000 feet of flashings the branch recently wrapped this new roofing project. The slopes on this job presented a unique challenge to the crews. The angles varied from 2 in 10 to 13 in 10, and required a “double tie off” for all crew members. With only one tie off point at the base of the cross on the steeple, a hip ring had to go around the waist for positioning in addition to the use of a full body harness. The crews did an excellent job “working an angle” and we would like to thank everyone for their hard work! Great job guys!

BIG THANKS TO THE MANY CREWS CONTRIBUTING TO UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN PROJECT Saskatoon Branch began this Multi-Scope Contract with PCL in 2010, with plans to finish in 2012.

The contract included 800 squares of metal deck, 400 squares of composite panel, 700 squares of membrane roofing and 100 squares of metal cladding on the Academic Health Sciences E-Wing at the University of Saskatchewan. This has been one of the branch’s largest multi-scope projects over the last two years, and we have thoroughly enjoyed working with PCL on all of it. We hope to obtain more projects with this contractor in the future.

We are lucky to have had many hard working crews contribute to this project (many of which are not present in the photo below). You know who you are, and this job would not have been possible without you. Thank you!

K3 MINE IN ESTERHAZY The Saskatoon Branch has been hard at work installing PVC waterproofing and membrane below grade at the K3 Mine in Esterhazy. This is the first time a project like this has been done in Canada using PVC membrane, PVC water stop bar and fake hose resin injection (which is used to compartment sections of the structure in case of leakage). This product can be injected to seal and prevent water intrusion. The crew works 10+ hour days, with 10 days in and 4 days out. The work area itself is hoarded and heated as the nature of the material used needs to be installed at a temperature of at least 10 degrees Celsius. The guys stay in the “K2 Camp” which is a trailer set up for individual rooms with a single bed, cable TV, a sink and a closet.

GLAZING RENEWAL CREW GOING FULL SPEED AHEAD The Edmonton Branch Glazing Renewal Crew has begun repair of the atrium skylights at the Walter C Mackenzie Health Sciences located in Edmonton. This sole source negotiated project followed on the heels of a successful foam panel repair using specialized silicone weather seal products. Our crews are working on sealing the existing glazing system with a peel and stick membrane and are replacing 100 sealed unit seal failures of the over 3400 units on site! The work will be completed prior to the fall of 2012.

SMILING FACES DESPITE -35 DEGREE TEMPERATURES The Edmonton Branch’s Glazing Renewal crew has been battling some seriously cold temperatures at the Depot for CAT Equipment Maintenance in Fort McKay (about one hour North of Fort McMurray). They are currently installing built Curtain wall working 10 days on and four days off.

They will return in the spring to complete the job, once the building is ready. In spite of the cold temperatures, the crew continually kept a brave face and positive demeanor. Great job guys!

BACK TO THE BASICS The Edmonton Branch was chosen to complete 3000 square feet of built up roofing installation on a building addition to the Spruce Grove Vet Clinic. The project also includes pre-painted metal cap flashings on the new addition and to the balance of the structure. Because of Flynn’s prompt response to the general contractor’s schedule and the professionalism of Brandt Tindall’s crew, Flynn was asked to conduct additional service work to the existing roof areas.

CALGARY BRANCH HARD AT WORK The Calgary Branch is completing a cladding installation project for GC Graham Construction on a strip mall in Western Calgary. The project scope includes fixed metal cladding and architectural panels in four separate custom colours. Due to a challenging schedule the guys on site had to work quickly and efficiently to bring the project in on time.

UNIQUE UNDERTAKING IN SASKATOON This year the Saskatoon Branch was awarded a job which is rather unique for Flynn. They have been charged with manufacturing, welding, painting and assembling 719 BBQs and 665 picnic tables to be distributed around the province for Saskatchewan’s parks. It has been a huge undertaking for the branch, and the due date is fast approaching so there are both day and night crews working to cross the finish line. ONLY CUSTOM GOLD FOR LEXUS OF SOUTH EDMONTON The Edmonton Branch has been hard at work on the new Lexus dealership in South Edmonton with a fast approaching deadline of summer 2012. Phase one of the roofing portion was completed by Terry Rideout (Foreman) and his crew of Peter Gutsche, Glenn Depaulo, Tomaz Zotara, Darius Lesniewski, Viaceslauas Barkovskis Sr. and Viaceslavas Barkovskis Jr. The second phase is currently underway to complete the 475 squares of Firestone loose laid EPDM on a very cut up roof area. This portion will be completed by Foreman, Chris Vladicka’s crew (shown below). Also onsite is a metal’s crew, installing AV, subsystem and insulation as well as 250 squares of multi-colour architectural panel (metallic silver, custom gold and clear anodized) which will be used in part to create grand custom gold entrances. The end result will be a very sharp looking Lexus. Great work guys!

PAT ON THE BACK ST. JOHN’S TO THE RESCUE ON NEW YEARS EVE When high winds blew the roof off of the Canada Post Building in St. John’s on New Year’s Eve, Flynn crews mobilized to get the roof repaired on very short notice.

Led by their Superintendent, William Kennedy - the crew consisting of Pascal Desjardins, Gary Best, Ken Petersen, William Kennedy, Charlie Wells, Jonathan Stagg, Dean King, Zeb Waldner, Lance Wicks and Justin Foss worked until 8pm that night. They didn’t leave until they ensured the roof was water tight before a storm was set to hit the following day.

Flynn Canada was the only roofing contractor in the city that day that was able to commit to the roof repair for BLJC, the facilities management company working with Canada Post.

BLJC personally called the VP of the Atlantic region to thank Flynn for their efforts in securing the roof.

T.A.S.K. SUBMISSIONS Teamwork/Attitude/Sharing/Knowledge TASK WINNER Bep Van Klaveren from our Calgary Branch suggested a Forklift attachment for the Hydraulic Rock Spreader. He recommended that we adapt a set of the Garlock hydraulic forks, designed for the R800, to the existing Flynn Hydraulic Rock Spreaders. The result is a tool that can be used to seamlessly transport lightweight materials around the roof (ISO, Fiberboard, Solar Panels, etc.), but should not be used to move heavier materials like pallets, pavers, or full rolls of the roof membrane. Thanks for the great idea Bep!

APPRECIATION FOR A JOB WELL DONE Recently, Doug Flynn (President, CEO) received a letter from a very happy customer for a re-roof project recently completed in Oakville.

The customer was extremely impressed with our workforce and our craftsmanship.

The project was 2220 Speers Rd - an 81 sq. ft. re-roof completed by Nuno Silva (Superintendent) and Martinho (Chico) Ondas as the Roofing Foreman. The sheet metal was completed by Tim Speck and Alan Perry from our sheet metal department.

Outstanding job, Gentlemen!

Dear Mr. Flynn, Last September I contacted several major roofing companies to respond to an RFQ on the roofing spec I had prepared for one of my buildings in Oakville. I spoke with John McManus who put me in touch with Jim Guzik. Jim and I met at the site to preview the job and he suggested some very helpful modifications to my specification. Ultimately, I awarded the contract to Flynn.

Nuno Silva and Martinho (Chico) Ondas came out to survey the site. The job start date was delayed a couple of days and it all worked out fine because Nuno provided regular and clear communication on the delay. This allowed me to effectively coordinate with related trades and suppliers. All the equipment, supplies, bins and material arrived on the new start date. Then things really got rolling.

It was like a military operation. No fooling around. I am a ‘hands-on’ building owner so I was on-site every day of the project. It was amazing to watch the team go through the many steps involved in a re-roofing project. Every member of the team knew exactly what to do next. It was like having a SWAT team on the roof. They were all very efficient, focused and hard-working. And if that were not enough, they are the first roofing crew that I have encountered who are polite and courteous. My comments and observations also extend to Tim and Allan from the sheet metal department who were responsible for putting that most visible and crisp finishing touch on the project.

While I enjoyed working with all the members of the Flynn team, I would like to single out Martinho for his energetic dedication to the project. It was obvious that the crew all have a mutual respect for each other and Martinho is clearly responsible for setting the tone and the pace. It was a pleasure working with Martinho as we resolved the inevitable problems that arise on every construction project.

I appreciate his willingness to pay close attention to the small but critical details of the roof assembly installation. It is through the careful execution of those small details that a roof with a long life is born.

The flashing looks great. The clean-up was thorough. It’s all good. I can’t think of a single thing that we might have done differently or better. I guess that makes me a very satisfied customer. Nuno, Martinho, and his crew have raised the bar. I believe that I have encountered the best roofing crew in Ontario. I know that their performance is a clear reflection of your management style and the management team that you have assembled. Well done.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME Like so many of us, Jeff Gare (Roofing Apprentice) of London, Ontario grew up playing baseball. He started playing around the age of eight, and by the time he was ready for college, he had become so good at the sport that he landed a baseball scholarship to St. Clair College in Port Huron, Michigan.

After finishing school, he played slo-pitch recreationally, and now for the last four years he has represented the country as a member of Team Canada’s Men’s Slo-Pitch in the “Border Battle” taking place in Oklahoma City against Team USA. “My favourite place to travel is Oklahoma for the border battle,” Jeff says, “It really is the highlight of my year.”

Jeff, who also plays with the US team “Team Combat” out of Seattle, travels a lot for the sport throughout the summer months.

He has spent the weeks over the last four years working for Flynn in our London Branch’s roofing division. On the weekends, he’s off to the states to play semi-pro. Jeff describes his baseball and work schedule as “hectic, but a good hectic,” but finds the travel opportunities as well as the chance to meet and play with baseball players from all over Canada very rewarding.

There are a lot of exciting things happening for Jeff. He is ranked in the top two slo-pitch players in Canada, and is even sponsored by a company called Combat which makes sporting equipment. They have recently developed a special edition Jeff Gare bat (see photo).

Jeff is not the only one at the London Branch that has a knack for baseball. He and his colleagues, Carlos Medeiros, Rui Medeiros, Rob Monk, Kenny Williams, and Jeff Mowry all play recreationally for Team Nicarao (pictured).

This year Jeff will be competing with Team Canada in Oklahoma City for the annual “Border Battle” on June 30th. Jeff’s wife Debbie, and their three daughters, his Team Nicarao teammates, and all of us at Flynn Canada will be cheering him on. The event will be televised on TSN so stay tuned to check out the game. Good luck Jeff!

REVITALIZATION PROJECT IN DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG The Winnipeg Branch recently went to work on the Residence on York, a revitalization project taking an existing building and turning it into high end condos for downtown living. The system consisted of adjustable bars and insulation varying from 1˝ to 8˝ wall variances with our Accumet 2000 panels in Castle Grey and Black. Working on a tight downtown corner with restrictions on working hours due to traffic flow mandated by the city, both our Jason Walsh (Foreman) and Doug McElroy (Foreman) shared duties to keep this project on track. Working alongside Tim Si (Project Coordinator) the project ran smoothly with the full cooperation of the owner (Timbercreek).

LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT PROJECT CALGARY Calgary Branch crews have been working on the City of Calgary West Light Rail Transit expansion project since March of 2011.

This project involves eight buildings in total, and it incorporates the entire building envelope as well as some interior work. Here are just some of the scopes we are doing as a design assist negotiated GMP contract: • • • • •

Craning of 200ft+ of Sheet metal!

KINETIC ARTWORK IN CALGARY Recently, Flynn and Heavy Industries collaborated on a piece of kinetic artwork with 4,080 kinetic parts covering 3,250 square feet of a parking structure in downtown Calgary. Heavy had to create a number of mockups, and was thankful for Flynn’s Stephen Teal who was able to help extensively in acquiring the right materials and suppliers, even utilizing the AGS facilities in Toronto to cut out the metal panels needed. The project took about eight months to complete from start to finish, and crews from both Heavy and the Calgary Branch worked directly on the project. The Kahn building is an excellent example of the Flynn and Heavy Industries partnership – how we can work together to execute an awesome project, and a remarkable piece of art!

ANYBODY WANT A NEW CAR? Anybody want a new car? That’s what Winnipeg roofing crew members were thinking when they set up on this roof replacement project.

Nothing but brand new vehicles and glass ALL around at the Mazda Dealership, so needless to say this project was a very weather sensitive, and more specifically, wind sensitive. It started with 4100 square feet of roof replacement but the guys did such a great job it ended up totaling 7100 square feet with additional area added to our contract. No cars purchased at the end of this project, good job boys!

HERITAGE PROJECT FOR WINNIPEG ON HOLY TRINITY CHURCH Holy Trinity church was completed in 1884 after only 18 months of construction. This neo-gothic structure is now a designated National historical site and all of our gutters and hoppers had to be historically correct and have Parks Canada approve the shapes prior to fabrication. Winnipeg Branch Trim Shop worked hard to solder and grind all the hoppers to a smooth even finish before post painting to match the existing color. Robert Hogue and his six man crew worked hard to complete the removal and reinstallation of the gutter, downspouts, cedar soffits and hoppers on this project in a short time frame due to the possibility of government funding running out on the heritage project if not completed on time.

TACKLING A SECOND TARGET DISTRIBUTION CENTRE The Calgary Branch was recently chosen by Graham Construction to install mechanically fastened Sarnafil roofing on the Target Regional Distribution Centre in Balzac. With 1.3 million square feet of Sarnafil roof this will be the largest production roofing job the branch has ever tackled - but our guys were up for the challenge!

The Rhinobond attachment system we’re using allows us to use fewer fasteners and speed up the production of the workers compared to a conventional PVC roof. As this is the first time our roofing crews have used the Rhinobond system, a crew with previous experience was brought in from Ontario to give our guys a hand and show them how to use the equipment efficiently. Target and Graham Construction chose Flynn for this job in part due to the excellent performance of the crews on the job in Cornwall. Excellent job to all the crews in Cornwall, and the crews starting out in Calgary – Keep up the good work!

FLYNN UNIVERSITY FOR SAFETY PROFESSIONALS Earlier this spring, all of Flynn’s Safety Representatives from across the country participated in Flynn University for Safety Professionals (FUSP). This program was designed to create a support network of safety experts that can work together to share their diverse range of knowledge all across Flynn. The program was a huge success and has helped to close the gap in processes and procedures that differ from region to region, creating a truly unified Safety Management Program.
