Flynn Life Saver Award

In 2016 one of our Senior Safety Leaders put her workplace safety training to work and potentially saved the life of a young boy on a baseball diamond. She immediately stepped up and did the right thing, and it was a happy ending for everyone involved.

This inspired a discussion at our Executive Safety level, that we should institute a “Flynn Life Saver Award”, in addition to our other recognition programs like the Safety Star, and the Branch Safety Leader. The Flynn Life Saver Award is intended to celebrate and recognize a Flynn employee who steps up and does the right thing, whether at work or not, and put what they have learned at work to good use in their community.

We rolled out that program expecting (hoping?) that we would rarely be in the position to recognize extra ordinary efforts in a life-threatening situation. But when you think about how many Flynn teams there are out there across North America, and how much training is provided, it was only a matter of time. And we have seen many Flynn Life Saver Awards earned and recognized at local gatherings and in print in places like the Flynn Flash company magazine.

I was recently made aware however, that since we rolled out this program, there have been 26 Flynn Life Saver Awards earned! I have to admit, this number is much greater than I would have guessed. This makes all the effort and the investment in things like first aid training seem just a little more worthwhile.

The fact that we have had this many Flynn employees go out of their way to get involved in a potentially life threatening, or at the least life changing situation, is actually about more than just the training they have received. I think this speaks to our culture and the commitment of our people to be good human beings. Sadly, in this day of personal liability, it would certainly be just as easy to keep walking and let someone else step up; and I am so proud to be able to say that at least 26 people at Flynn have made the choice to stop and help someone in need.

Although I know not one of the Flynn Life Saver award recipients did what they did for personal accolades, these acts of kindness show what a caring culture we have at Flynn. And this is something that will go a long way to ensuring our culture stands the test of time, and is most certainly the kind of thing that deserves to be publicly recognized and celebrated.

Please see the link below to all of the people at Flynn who have received a Flynn Life Saver Award since the inception of the program, I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to flip through these stories. They are all very inspiring.

To all the Flynn Life Saver Award recipients so far, on behalf of all of us within the Flynn Family, please accept our hearty thanks for being selfless, and doing the right thing! Salute!

Stay safe, Doug

Flynn’s Largest Atlantic Stick Job is Now Complete

Our Halifax team has completed the six-storey office building after nine months of labour with a 12-man crew.

The building was wrapped in a custom designed stick-built curtain wall from Anotec Manufacturing in New Brunswick. While glass for the building came from Carey’s Glass in Ireland. Flynn also designed and installed an ACM soffit using Flynn’s Accumet system at the under side of level two around the entire building. Overall, the project was a huge success! A massive shoutout to the local team for running all aspects of design, engineering, procurement and installation.

Montreal’s Most Ambitious Mass Transport Project in Half a Century

The REM train system is the major infrastructure project in Montreal.

In fact, this will be the most ambitious mass transit system in Montreal since the beginning of the Metro system back in 1966. The REM will consist of 23 stations and approximately 67 km of rail network. Flynn Montreal has the tremendous honour of contributing to this iconic project and leaving their mark on the city’s landscape. One of the bigger challenges was the task of completing the curtain wall system on the dock in record time to allow access for the other trades. The whole team rolled up their sleeves and got to work to complete the curtain wall in 20 days; half the time it took on the other stations.

This impressive workmanship has helped Flynn Montreal earn the trust of the client and further establish our capability as a professional team. That’s just the Flynn Way, establishing a relationship through hard work and getting the job done.

Flynn Helps Provide Affordable Housing in Calgary

Flynn Calgary recently participated in a retrofit project aimed to provide affordable housing in downtown Calgary.

Over the last few years many downtown Calgary core office buildings have been facing vacancy issues. Without the prospects of potential leases, developers and landlords are having to take a broader approach that benefits both themselves and Calgarians.

After just 12 months of renovations the downtown has one less vacant office tower and more affordable homes. The 10-storey office tower formerly known as Sierra Place has been completely renovated into 82 units of affordable housing for vulnerable Calgarians, including an emergency shelter and transitional housing for families facing homelessness.

This project was a success due to the collaboration of Calgary Architectural Metals (Project Manager Kirill Shved, Foreman Danny Tangen) and roofing departments (Project Coordinator Denis Arkharov, Foreman Gareth Sanderson) as well as the Midwest Glazing branch (Project Manager Kirill Shved, Foreman Bob Jones). Danny Tangen has served on this project as an architectural metals foreman for the very last time and has transitioned into the superintendent role.

Modern 18 Storey High-Rise Completed by Kansas City Team

The Kansas City branch recently finished the 1400 Baltimore project that boasts 10 floors of parking garage and 8 floors of office space.

This distinctive, futuristic and very modern 18 storey high rise included metals, glazing and waterproofing. The typical challenges of high-rise development came into play on this one; coordination of crews, tight downtown jobsite and the continuous push to maintain the schedule. Due to the unique challenge of extra wide and tapered accent cantilevers (rigid structural elements that extends horizontally on the building’s exterior) the Architectural Metals division utilized hydro-mobile mast climbing platform lifts to allow for access to the ins and outs. The glazing scope included 20,000 SF of pre-glazed window wall, 76,310 SF of unitized curtain wall and a ground level custom system with jumbo 10’ x 17’ glass. While the waterproofing portion was 35,000 SF with a fire stopping (passive fire protection) scope.

8

Moncton Crews Braving the Weather and Getting it Done

Despite Hurricane Fiona the Moncton crews have been hard at work on two large projects.

The Walmart Distribution Center has been underway since February 2022. This 222,800 SF TPO project is expected to meet the final deadline by the time you read this. The other project is a reroof by the 5th Canadian Division Support Base, which is a Canadian military base in New Brunswick. The new roof will be a 2-ply Mod. Bit. system and is expected to be complete by the end of 2022. The teams out east are used to crazy weather, so these projects didn’t prove a problem.

9

Hard Work and Quality Workmanship Build Strong Relationships

The Flynn Hanover branch has been working on the St. Mary’s Nursing Center project since mid-August.

Jose Miranda and his crew have been praised by the GC and building owner for their workmanship, safety and overall organization of the project. It is because of this outstanding performance that Hanover has gained continued business with Scheibel Construction (GC). Hopefully it will be the first step of many more in building a relationship with a new client. It’s great to see good news out of the Hanover branch who recently celebrated their one-year anniversary.

From Stone to Glass. We are Ready for any Challenge

Flynn Manufacturing Vancouver has supplied quality unitized curtain wall frames to several projects both in the province of BC as well as in the PNW – Washington.

Each project has a new twist, it seems. Simple and typical curtain wall frames are a thing of the past.

Below, you are looking at a test frame that has been glazed with one inch stone panels for a project in Bellevue, WA called Block 5. These heavy panels have been installed into frames in place of glass units. The team lifted the frame as a final step in the test process and reported no issues - we are good to go. There have been several types of materials used in place of glass. We can think of the Terra Cota panels for 155 Water Street. Then we have massive louvers for Block 16 in Bellevue, WA. In Vancouver’s downtown core, we have 48-foot glass fins for the 1568 Alberni job. We’ve fabricated STX (tile) panels and have even put on granite panels on the exterior of Nordstrom’s. It seems that there is nothing Flynn cannot put on the façade of these structures.

So, what’s next? Did someone say – Speedwall?

New Business Hub for Canadian Nuclear Laboratories

Flynn Ottawa was brought on to complete the architectural scope on the new business hub for CNL.

This business hub will stand at six storeys tall and will provide facilities for Canada’s premier nuclear science and technology organization. The scope includes 11,000 SF of metal wall siding, 9,000 SF of terracotta panels and an assortment of miscellaneous metal work. The project started back in September 2021 and is looking to be completed by March 2023. Things are looking good with the project as the terracotta tiles are already 80% installed.

Only Way In and Out is by Helicopter

Our Phoenix team has been working on the Havasupai Indian Reservation which is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Such a unique location requires a helicopter to bring materials and men to and from the site. There are only two days per week of flying in and out. Which means that our crews have set up a temporary camp during their stay. Flynn was brought in to complete both the roofing and metals scope. The roofing scope was PVC, averaged about six men and is complete. The metals side is still ongoing at the time of writing but should be done by January 2023. The distinct colour of the metals was chosen by the architect to create a colouring blend that mixed well with the surrounding area and canyon walls.

13

Bringing Life to The Leaf

Winnipeg's new horticultural attraction The Leaf is a collection of trees and plants from different regions, a butterfly garden, and a six-storey waterfall.

This impressive new installation also houses an events room, indoor/outdoor classrooms for learning, and a restaurant which uses ingredients from vegetation grown on site. The Flynn team in Winnipeg was called on to provide their expertise on the architectural scope for the 84,400 SF building. With over 70 extras/change directives issued to the metals scope on this three-year work period, strong change order management practice was essential to keep the project running smoothly. One of the biggest challenges on the job was the work performed at the core tower. Scaffolding access at the core tower was extremely congested, which presented a challenge of having very limited workspace on a scope that required the majority of the flashings be custom and fabricated on site. The team staged a fabrication area on site with a thought-out plan to avoid wasting time travelling back and forth from the fabrication area. When working on larger jobsites, having a plan to minimize the waste of travel can save huge amounts of time and money. Having an experienced foreman onsite, such as Robert Hogue, was crucial to the development of the strategic planning on this project.

TSC was integral to not only the success of the installation of the system but also working with the project design team to better understand the system constraints and visualize the finished look. The expertise and work performed by Heather Keohane from TSC was much appreciated from the Flynn project team and all external customers.

The final project looks gorgeous as you can see from the pictures and it’s a cool new landmark for Winnipeg and to anyone thinking of visiting.

Ottawa Team Starts Phase II for the Ottawa Light Rail Transit

The Ottawa team has been working hard on the OLRT (Ottawa Light Rail Transit) Phase II which will include 10 stations.

This prestigious project has been underway for years and will put Flynn’s name on the Ottawa map when it’s complete. The current phase includes 136,000 SF of fibre cement panels, 117,000 SF of Accumet panels and 24, 000 SF of STX panels. The team just started this phase in August of 2022 and has another two years to go to completion. Many in Ottawa are looking forward to their new transit and we look forward to showing it off in the Flash when it’s complete.

Sudbury Glazing Keeping Our Schools Open

Our Sudbury glazing team is doing its part to keep our schools open by installing the entrance so people can get in.

Its not a large task, but its important and needs to be done. Good to see the guys enjoying their work and taking a quick moment to give a thumbs up.

The Gorgeous View Makes the Work Go Faster

Our Kelowna crews have recently been working on the Isabella Dicken Elementary school addition.

This particular project comes with a great perk, a gorgeous view of the Rocky Mountains. The jobsite is located in Fernie, BC, which is world-renowned for skiing, mountain biking and fishing for cutthroat trout in the Elk River. People travel from all over the world to get a glimpse of these famous mountains, so it can make a day go a bit quicker when you can enjoy them at any moment.

Service Team Patching up Ontario Clean Water Agency

One of the London service crews was hard at work doing some repairs at the Ontario Clean Water Agency.

The agency oversees over 450 water and wastewater treatment facilities. It was an important job and our team got it done with the workmanship Flynn is known for.

Replacing Torched for Cold Applied on a Hospital

Our Victoria branch was recently offered roofing work on the Jubilee Hospital that involved a torch applied system.

But the Flynn team has been moving away from any torch work and this was a great opportunity to sub in a cold applied system instead. A cold applied system is much safer and a wise precaution especially when working on a hospital. Our team removed the existing concrete slab on the SBS roof membrane, power washed, and then installed the new sheet board and cap sheet. Afterward they installed the new paving stones over the membrane. Getting the job done while keeping safety first, it’s the Flynn Way.

Our Halifax, Winnipeg and Calgary Branches Team Up

Our Halifax, Winnipeg and Calgary branches have put together a joint effort on the Werkliv project in Halifax.

The Werkliv development is housing for almost 500 university students and needed to be finished for the students to move in for the beginning of the school year. The project consisted of 60,000 SF of hidden fastener siding as well as 5,000 SF of exposed fastener siding. Flynn Halifax was under a lot of pressure to complete this on a condensed work schedule, so they called on some help from the rest of Flynn. Flynn Winnipeg was the first branch to step up. Our Winnipeg team has been working closely with Halifax for the past year on multiple projects and the workers didn’t hesitate to jump at this opportunity. Winnipeg workers spent the entire summer working on the project. Special thanks to Shawn Murray, Ulysse Hupe, Marcus Mowat, Thomas LeDoux, Richard Mathieu, Steven Nobiss and Joel Bonneteau.

The project also included support from Flynn Calgary, who helped with the final push to get the project done on time. Mindaugas Razutis, Shawn Ellis, John Dobson, Tomas Campbell, Jesus Oviedo and Jon Montgomery came for the final push to make the September 1st move in date a reality. Halifax foreman Tristian Pattison wouldn’t have been able hit his targets without the hard work from Calgary and Winnipeg working alongside the Halifax crews. It is because of this teamwork that Flynn was able to install an impressive amount of siding system in just four months.

A big shout out to our Halifax field staff for their hard work and East Coast hospitality to the visiting branches.

18

Partnering with the BCIT Internship Program to Encourage a New Generation

Each year the Flynn Vancouver branch has provided the opportunity for BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology) to participate in an internship program over the summer months.

The program places students within the Estimating, Architectural Products and Roofing departments and offers them valuable industry experience. This year we hired four bright first year students from the program. During the internship we arranged for a field trip to our glazing manufacturing plant. Here the students were able to see how the Unitized Glazing System and Stick Glazing System is fabricated. Feedback gathered from after the tour indicated that interest and enjoyment levels were high, and a lot was gained from the firsthand experience at the shop. We look forward to making this a yearly tradition with our interns.

19

Portland’s First Graduates from the Roofer Apprentice Program

Our Portland branch recently became a training agent for the Roofers Apprentice Program.

The partnership with the Northwest College of Construction (NWCOC) and Nail IT Roofing conducts outreach within the local community. The goal is to provide training and preparation for young individuals so they can pursue a career in the roofing industry. Flynn was proud to be included in the development and graduation of two state certified Journeyman, Michael Houghton and Justin Pack who will be recognized as roofer journeymen nationwide. The program gives its apprentices the opportunity to become familiar with roofing terms, equipment and materials before they step on a roof. This allows the apprentices to be practice with a roof system before installation. By controlling the learning environment, we can break down in detail each step during a project, from the planning and scheduling to prepping safety and installation.

Saskpower Logistics Hub Requires Serious Flynn Logistics

Our Flynn teams in Saskatchewan are currently tackling a massive project that involves both a roofing and metals scope.

The SaskPower Logistics Hub is a new warehouse facility that will provide a centralized location for employees. Phase One began in December 2021 and is expected to take three years before Phase Two can begin. The total cost for Phase One alone will be $100

million. The Flynn roofing team mobilized to site in early August to begin roofing and was soon followed by the metals team. There are a total of five buildings that Flynn is working on. The project has over 200,000 SF of RapidLock roofing, 500 ACM panels, 40,000 SF of cladding/soffits and 24,000 SF of insulation. It’s a big job to say the least and it has taken a hardworking team that is well coordinated. Plus, the OPEX team was happy to lend its support by having Rick Lacey, Architectural Training Specialist and Jose Neiva, Roofing Training Specialist visit multiple times.

Thank you to the entire team for your hard work.

Project leads: Adam Gero Roofing Manager, Travis Boyd Jr Project Manager, Jordan Walker Architectural Metals PM, Troy Csada Lead Architectural Metals Superintendent, Coralee Kirstein Project Coordinator, Lead Foreman Julian Poblete & Danny Cunliffe, with Support from Mike James (Foreman) Project advisors Sean Thompson & Drew Halliday. Project Estimator Rick Irasga Shared Services and multiple crews and members.

COVER STORY

Our Salt Lake City branch has recently

Flynn was involved with all three scopes when it came to the construction of the facility. The glazing scope went smoothly with a crew of four to six men. Though the amount of work was a bit deceiving due to the number of sliding doors and interior glass walls. The flat roofing involved a much larger crew of 28, but this number shrank during the three weeks of work installing roofing, metal cap and skylights. While the metals work involved installing ACM panels, which was a bit tricky due to the angles and patterns but was no problem for our experienced metals crews.

The facility will have 72,000 SF dedicated to production and 10,000 SF for storage, which will make it the third largest plant in Flynn. It will produce a large range of materials, including ACM, Axiom, doors, ISO clips, UCW to just to name a few. With the addition of this plant, we will see an impressive increase in Flynn’s overall production ability. It is expected to produce 20,000 ACM and 6,000 aluminum plate panels annually, plus 700,000 ft. of sub-girts and flashing. To put this into perspective, Flynn’s new total production power is estimated at 66,000 ACM panels annually and 3.6 million feet of sub-girts and flashing.

“We currently have 59 employees in the new facility and are quickly ramping up our production,” said Admir Djuheric, Manufacturing Operations Manager. “By the end of the year there are plans to add a glazing production line and it will begin producing glazing products such as unitized curtain wall at between 7,500-9,000 frames annually.”

Flynn has over 6,000 employees and over 30 branches throughout North America, this increase in our manufacturing capabilities will further solidify us as the leading total building envelope.

“We are very excited about our new plant and the expansion of our manufacturing abilities in the Pacific Northwest. Not only will it allow us to better supply our jobs in the U.S. but there are plans to provide products such as STX to many of the western Canadian branches,” said Glenn Rainey, Interim Branch Manager. “All of the Flynn branches are part of one great whole and this new plant will allow us to forge a new link in our supply chain and better equip our crews with the materials they need to get the work done.”

Chief of Police Praises Heroism of Aaron Clanton and Marlund Nuff

Submitted by Colin McGlocklin

I wanted to express my sincerest appreciation for the quick and prompt action of two of your employees. This morning, about two miles south of the city of Connell a fire started in the center median of SR 395. It is unknown what started the fire. As you can imagine, due to our recent extreme temperatures and dry conditions made this a significant incident. Within seconds the once small fire grew much larger. With heavy dry vegetation in the median this fire could have easily spread and jumped to either side of the highway causing a much larger and nearly uncontrollable fire due to the terrain.

In fact, just last Thursday the town of Lind, which is about 10 miles north of us, had to be evacuated due to a fast-moving fire that burned six homes and eight other structures.

As I was radioing my dispatch center requesting fire department resources, Aaron Clanton and Marlund Nuff stopped their vehicle, grabbed fire extinguishers and ran across the highway towards the fire. Their quick and selfless actions helped stop the spreading of the fire and kept it contained until the fire department arrived.

I, along with the Connell fire department and the Franklin County Fire District 1 fire department want to say thank you to Aaron and the other employee for all their help.

Respectfully,

Flynn Crew Provide First Aid to Injured Student

Submitted by Aimee Eden

While working one morning Mike McCuaig and Mario Ruberto from Toronto heard a commotion coming from the students walking on the sidewalk.

From the manlift they noticed a child (Devan) was laying on the ground and bleeding. Mike McCuaig (Big Mike) rushed to help the teacher apply first aid as Mario secured the scene and made sure the kids were okay. It turns out the kids had been playing and Devan has slammed his head into the overhead protection. Mike called the school to notify the parents as the teacher kept pressure on the wound. Devan looked to be doing just fine, so the guys took a quick picture with him. The team plan to follow up with Devan’s parents, just to be sure he is fine.

Konnor Chelkowski Recognized with Life Saver Award

Konnor Chelkowski from the Service Department at the Victoria Branch was awarded the Flynn Life Saver Award after he and his foreman, Jeff Thul, went above and beyond to save the life of a young woman in distress.

On November 23, 2022, while working on a service site they observed a young despondent woman sitting on the edge of the building. Jeff contacted 911 and waited for police, while Konner talked with the woman. Showing a little compassion and sharing a conversation helped the situation and the woman left the roof safely. Congratulations to the pair for their calm and quick response, you made a positive difference in her life.

Punshon Receives Life Saver Award

One morning at the Jack Hamilton Arena project in Saskatchewan, Canada, Mike Punshon found a homeless man in a sleeping bag.

The man wasn’t looking healthy and because it was February it was incredibly cold out. Mike asked if he would like him to phone for help, but the man was shaking uncontrollably and could barely reply yes. The temperature that day was around -10 Celsius or 14 Fahrenheit, and it would have been much colder during the night. Mike called for and ambulance and they were able to recover and help the man.

Gordon Trahan Receives Life Saver Award

While working onsite Gordon Trahan from the Ottawa branch noticed an employee from another company collapse.

Gordon was the only person around since he and the man were working in the basement. Quickly he began to perform first aid on the man, who was having a seizure. Gordon placed the man in the recovery position and began yelling for help. Help arrived in time and the man has already fully recovered. But its scary to think what would have happened if Gordon had not been there to offer his help. That is why we want to recognize him with the Flynn Life Saver award.

Ralph Luke Recognized for Outstanding Safety

Ralph Luke was recognized by the GC for outstanding safety practices at the MAZ site in Phoenix.

Ralph is new to the Flynn and has only been with us for less than a year, but he has 30 plus years of roofing experience and is a great addition to the team. With that much experience Ralph has pretty much worked with all roofing systems and he takes great pride in safety and the quality of his work. Most importantly, his team describe him as “a genuine human being, that cares for his team members”.

Welcome to Flynn and great work Ralph.

Multi-Building Facebook Data Center Undertaken by Flynn with OPEX Support

The Phoenix branch was awarded the roofing scope for a Facebook data center codenamed MAZ 1-2.

This three building 700,000 SF data center would be a huge undertaking for any one Flynn branch. But Phoenix was able to call on the support of Kansas City, Minneapolis and the OPEX team to help get the job done. At peak labour there were 63 crew members on site, which demands tight organization to ensure labour efficiency. To help with the process OPEX sent training specialists

Jose Neiva and Jed Johnston to help teach best practices and efficiencies so our crews worked like a well-oiled machine.

The project has many challenges, one of them being its rolling schedule with three buildings constructed at once. One building can be difficult on its own, but three buildings mean you need to learn to juggle. There are two built-up crews, a cap sheet crew, and multiple mini crews just to meet scheduled deadlines. Luke DeFazio from the OPEX team was brought in to help the Phoenix team with scheduling, difficult time constraints and the management of a demanding client.

Greg Pexa, Charlie Holloway, Mike Shannon, and Mike Pierce were also a significant help to the Phoenix branch due to their past experiences on Facebook projects.

“The Facebook data centre would be a difficult project for any one branch at Flynn,” said Mike Pierce, OPEX Senior Advisor. “But being Flynn, we can draw on both manpower and knowledge resources from throughout the entire company. Its why OPEX is so prevalent on this project, we are here to oversee that knowledge and manpower transfer and make sure things are running smooth.”

Progress is looking good for our teams in the south and we look forward to seeing photos when the data centers are complete.

John Greenwood Wins 2022 TASK

The OPEX TASK program was created to promote the communication of good ideas within the company from branch to branch.

Every year the OPEX team selects an outstanding submission and showcases it to all of Flynn. This year we are recognizing John Greenwood from the Calgary branch for his use of the MAKINEX Hammer Drill Trolley. The machine is a simple but effective way to remove roofing material from a concrete deck and it helps prevent back strain.

TASK ideas don’t necessarily have to be field innovations, we are looking for any ideas that increase the quality of the work we perform.

If you have a TASK idea, please submit in on the Portal or on Flynncrew.com.

Recognizing the Hard Work of Our Travel Crews

The OPEX team would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our travel crews.

Be it working in a regional or national setting, these crews are away from their homes and families for extended periods of time. They help us deliver on the expectations of our clients and need to be able to adapt to varying conditions throughout the areas that we operate. There is no quicker way to experience the Flynn Way, then by travelling from branch to branch and meeting more of the Flynn team as a travel crew.

Thank you from the OPEX team!

Flynn Paddle Board Team Raises Money for Mental Health

On July 23rd the Flynn Vancouver Paddle Board team raced in the Surrey Hospitals Foundation Champion of the Crescent.

The Champion of the Crescent is British Columbia’s only annual charity stand up paddle board event in support of youth mental health programs. Some of the sponsors included EllisDon, Houle, and Scotiabank. A total of $243,000 was raised through the event for youth mental health programs. There were 42 teams competing in the relay race and Flynn Vancouver took home 3rd overall with some impressive placing in the lead-up races to the final. The team was happy with the results and to support a great cause. We are all looking forward to seeing the team bring home the gold next year.

Global Outreach: Oaxaca School, Mexico

Flynn Portland was recently approached by Andersen Construction to collaborate with their philanthropic foundation and assist with the construction of two sustainable, classroom buildings in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The school structures will incorporate the shipping containers that were used to transport the building materials for these classrooms from the US to Mexico. Our team will be sending two employees, one of whom is Portland Project Manager Miguel Rueda, to help Andersen and the local workforce complete these buildings by the end of 2022. With the help of a local vendor, Taylor Metal, Flynn was able to procure metal roofing materials to support the project. When completed, the buildings will provide a safe and permanent learning space for the more than 150 children and their families in Oaxaca. Great to see the Flynn branches giving back when they can and helping improve the world around us.

Building the Next Generation in Construction

Relaxing and Winning with BBQ

On behalf of the Canadian Association of Women in Construction, Luana Buratynski from the Toronto branch was a guest speaker for the Community Care for Women and Children’s (Communcare) event. Luana was asked to visit St. Theresa Catholic School in Scarborough and speak to 45 young girls, grades 4-8 about pursuing careers in the construction industry. Commucare is a not-for-profit organization operating in Canada with a vision of helping families, women, youth, and children overcome barriers by transferring basic skills, awareness, and knowledge at an earlier stage in life. One of the ways they do this is by showcasing job opportunities such as a career in construction. A big thank you to Luana for taking the time for such an important task. Hopefully we will see some of these young students working with Flynn one day.

The Kansas City Service Department had a Flynn Family Picnic in September to promote team building in addition to showing appreciation to field staff for all their hard work.

The event included ribs, brisket and pulled pork, everything you need for a proper BBQ. Due to their work on the Facebook data centers the KC team was given the opportunity to prove their BBQ skills in a competition. On September 8th the team entered the competition and took home first place in chicken due to the BBQ skills of sheet metal superintendents Dustin Borchert and Doug Sutton.

RECOGNIZING ANXIETY IN YOUR CHILD

(AND WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP)

It is not uncommon for children to experience anxiety in some form or another According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, 1 2 million youth in the country have reported being affected directly by mental illness With so many social, cultural and societal changes implemented over the years, anxiety amongst youth and adolescence has become much more common Feelings of anxiety can impact your child’s mood and behaviour, which may leave them struggling or feeling alone But here’s the silver lining: There’s hope! Anxiety is completely treatable and manageable Here’s how you can help:

It’s important to recognize and understand the warning signs of anxiety in your child. Have you noticed them acting differently? Isolating, not eating, not sleeping. Maybe you ’ ve noticed them expressing though ts of worry or stress Your child could be crying more frequently or experiencing stomach aches or headaches right before that big test at school There are a multitude of ways that anxiety can present in your child, so pay attention to even the little changes It’s crucial that your child knows they are not alone in experiencing these difficult emotions Here’s how you can offer your support:

Prov iding support and help as a parent is easier than you may think Offering a listening ear and unconditional support can make the biggest difference Listen to what they are saying without making judgements or immediately imposing to fix things. Sometimes, all your child wants is to be seen and heard. If your child appears to be reluctant to talk, try not to pry. As long as they know that you ’ re there for them, that is enough. If you ’ re not sure how to begin the conversation surrounding anxiety, try asking open ended questions like, “I’ve noticed you ’ ve been struggling a bit What’s been bothering you?”

If you feel that help is beyond you as a parent, there is no shame in seeking a professional to help Try finding someone who practices DBT or Narration Therapy At Cam’s Kids, we offer free and con fidential help via text message, affiliated through Kids Help Phone See our website for further information, resources and more

Anxiety is treatable, but the warning signs should not go ignored. You can help your child by being their advocate and creating a safe space for open communication surronding mental health.

Flynn Sports Sponsorship Program

Our Sports Sponsorship Program is a way for the Flynn team to give back to the communities we live and work in.

Thank you to our sponsored teams for sending in pictures. We love getting the pictures and including them in the Flynn Flash. By supporting amateur grass-root athletics we ensure that more people have access to sports and recreation and the personal development opportunities that they bring. Employees can nominate teams and/ or associations that they feel would benefit from a community sponsorship by filling out a form that can be supplied by Human Resources Administrator, Nicole Stewart.

Congratulations to Jacob Kenton from Kansas City and Neil West in Seattle. You will both be receiving a DJ Mini 2 drone. The contest was such a success that we hope to do it again soon. So, keep an out for that beautiful scenery.
