President’s Message
“Risk Management”
You will note that there is a special insert in this issue of the Flynn Flash relating to Risk Management; a newsletter/communication piece specifically regarding Risk Management issues. There are many varied issues and realities these days relating to this very important part of our business. To bury it, so to speak, in the Flynn Flash really does not give this topic the importance it deserves. Further, the Flynn Flash tends to touch on the lighter side of things and we all know that Risk Management issues are taken very seriously; it is not a “light” topic, nor would it be appropriate for it to become one. So, I encourage all to read the Risk Management articles in the newsletter carefully, we can’t be reminded of these issues often enough. After all, what is more important than the well-being of our field and office staff? You can expect to see this newsletter periodically and it will accompany the Flynn Flash newsletter. I also encourage you to participate in the content of this publication. It is mentioned that any ideas or suggestions to improve how we deal with the risks we face each day should be passed on to Manny DeSousa at mdesousa@flynn.ca. You could also send them to me at dflynn@flynn.ca. You guys in the field are on the front lines of this company; we need your opinions and suggestions. Our commitment to this area remains high, in fact we recently hired three more Risk Managers (one in the BC region, one in the Alberta region, and one in the Ontario region). There are plans to add one in the Prairie region as well. Our objective is to increase the frequency of site visits, expand on training initiatives, and improve communication. We are certain that these measures will serve us all well in the long run.

Training Paramount to Success Lisa Weyers, Hamilton’s Service Administrator (below) was one of many participants in an intensive one week course on the installation of all types of roofing materials. Lisa is pictured here performing detail work with PVC membrane. No, she isn’t going into the field. But she and anyone else who’s taken the course now have a solid understanding of how products are applied and what exactly the crews from Flynn Canada do on their projects. Therefore, Lisa will be better equipped when she directs or dispatches our service men. Since Lisa received her “hands-on” roof training certificate, twentyfour more people have taken the course. This course, along with various other safety and products courses, is offered by Flynn as part of our ongoing commitment and belief that well-trained employees are more confident, efficient, productive, and with a higher degree of awareness. Hands-on Training
George Wilson, RRO (Registered Roof Observer) and Peter Zahradnik RSW (Registered Specification Writer) of Bakor Inc. conducted a hands-on training course recently at their facility in Mississauga. Nat Cabral (below, far-right) was one of twelve
participants from the Toronto Branch to complete the four-day course on roof technology, maintenance, and inspection. Course content included conventional fourply built-up, single-ply thermoplastics, EPDM and modified bitumen roofing systems, including leak detection and proper repair procedures for the above membranes. Attendees, who are not generally exposed to on-site materials and procedures, found the course to be very interesting and informative. Like sweeping, eh Nat?
Regional Risk Managers Added in Ontario
Construction claims and high insurance premiums are causing many companies to take a closer look at their Safety and Risk Management programs, or to initiate one. Flynn, being an industry leader in Risk Management, can’t emphasis enough just how important this aspect of our business is. Because of this importance, we have added Mark Campbell and Luc Guilbeault to our Risk Management Group. Mark has previous experience with Flynn as part of our Field Crews, and will be assisting Mike Dauncey in the Alberta Region with a focus on the Calgary Branch. Luc is currently a Superintendent in our Ottawa branch, and was previously a roofing consultant with IRC Batten Sears in Ottawa. Luc will be looking after the Ottawa/Quebec market while assisting Tony Letterio in the London, Hamilton and Cambridge Branches. We wish them well.

If it’s reusable, it saves money! The winner of this edition’s $200 TASK submission award is Ron Fillier, for his idea of a Reusable Crate. Ron suggested we create reusable flashing crates, fabricated from aluminum framing, which are then used in conjunction with Flynn crane trucks, and returned to the shop.
Why carry when you can roll? Simply adding wheels and a handle to our fire extinguisher cages is a great idea submitted by Wayne Gaiser, General Foreman, in our London Branch. The assembly can be simply pulled around on the roof to wherever it may be needed, quickly and easily instead of lugging them around as we have been doing. Now why didn’t we think of that?
Todd Deforest (Superintendent, Toronto) purchased thirteen nets, measuring 70’ x 50’, for $119.00 each. But what do the users of these nets say? The comments from workers, Foreman and Superintendents were that the nets are easy to work with, quick to install, and extremely effective. General contractors also like them.
Parapet safety rail system You may recall from the Fall issue of the Flash that the winner of the TASK submission was Paul Nunes, Toronto Roofing, and
Avoid claims! In an effort to find a better way than using ropes to tie down and secure our materials on roofs, Tony Letterio submitted an innovative TASK idea. The idea was triggered by a recent incident on one of our projects. A number of bundles of EPS insulation were secured well with rope, but simply couldn’t withstand the power of sustained 90 km/h winds and were blown off the roof. “Sometimes we are forced to store materials on roofs for extended periods of time. Due to the unpredictability of the weather, we needed to find a better way There are many advantages to Ron’s crating design. He has now designed a complete easy-toinstall rail system that is currently in the process of being patented. These rails are strong, easily transported from job to job, and very versatile. They’re adjustable and can accommodate virtually any parapet condition! Innovative thinking by innovative people is the bond that keeps Flynn strong. Keep these ideas coming!

British Columbia Sechelt Crews Battle Wicked Late Fall Weather
Complex Metal Roof a Testament to Quality
In November of ‘05, Flynn Victoria started a job at the Holy Family Parish in Sechelt (below). It is a multi-story roof cladding in 20” JSM panels.
The new Deltaview Life Enhancement Center, in Delta, BC, couldn’t take a chance with just any roofer. They chose Flynn and for good reason; the entire roofing envelope of this project was awarded to us on a design build basis. Phase I of this project was started in December of 2004 and Phase II is now being completed. The building is a tilt-up concrete structure made to look like conventional multiresidential apartment construction. The metal roofs are designed with a 14” 12 pitch, which hides the EPDM roofing mechanical wells in the core of the building. In excess of 130,000 square feet of metal dormers, gables, valleys, hips and peaks, created a metal roofing challenge that few companies could perform in the time frames allotted. We were able to provide multiple trade disciplines and bring the roofing envelope together for the client within the required construction schedules, to facilitate the grand opening date.
What is most impressive about this job isn’t the material or design, but the Flynn employees who completed the work. Battling awful weather conditions including heavy rains, winds, and snow, our Crew (including Mark O’Hanley (Foreman), Jason O’Hanley, Darryl Wallace, Wahib Othman, and Adam Marshall) were out of town for almost seven weeks just before Christmas. While this out-of-town job was performed under difficult circumstances, the client was extremely happy with the result and was very impressed with our staff. We sincerely thank the Crew for their dedication and their families for their understanding, especially during the holiday season.

Victoria Branch Enters Float in 2005 IEOA Light Parade Local community involvement is gratifying and important to any business (or individual). It’s all part of doing positive things by helping others. This year the Victoria Branch took part in the Island Equipment Owners Association annual truck light parade that was held on December 3rd. This was an idea of Clayton Mineault and his wife Colleen (left). It was a great one, and they put a tremendous amount of effort into preparing the float. The parade was very successful, and as always, extremely popular with Victoria residents. In addition to the parade float, our Branch collected food and money for the benefit of the Western Communities Food Hamper Society. Victoria Branch is looking forward to next year’s event with hopes of increased participation. Victoria Branch will begin the collection of non-perishable food items early in 2006. They hope to be able to provide donations to the food bank throughout the year. They’ve asked the Flash to encourage (or even challenge) other Branches to do the same. So… what do you say, other Branches? Up for the challenge?

Just as he did during his “stampede” days in Alberta… Wayne Mack, Vancouver General Manager—Roofing (left), along with fellow senior staff members, Brian Nemez, Service Manager (center), and Ken Smith, General Manager—Metals, served up a “chuckwagonstyle” Christmas pancake breakfast with all the trimmings on December 23rd. All of our field employees were treated to a delicious “kick-start” to the day, and a great time was had by all. Then at noon the office staff got together for a potluck lunch and a “secret Santa” gift exchange. It was a lot of fun, and way too much good food.
Great Project Keeps BC Staff News Gaining Recognition Congratulations, once again, to Vancouver Metals on yet another award. This time it was the prestigious President’s Award as trade contractor for the Lift Restaurant project. The award was presented to Flynn by the Vancouver Regional Construction Association for the outstanding work that was done on this project.

Congratulations to newlyweds Connie & Al Adams. Al has been a long-time employee of DHS in Vancouver and worked in Omaha Nebraska for us since the spring of 2004. Omaha is where in the fall of 2004 he met
Connie Schneider. They were engaged this past summer and were married in December at their Langley home. Shawn MacDougall was eager to go back to school after a couple years’ sabbatical and recently completed the third year of his roofing apprenticeship. Upon completion of his studies this year, he received the award for “The Most Improved Apprentice” from the Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia. Congratulations, Shawn! The Victoria Branch would like to extend congratulations to two of our employees, Jason O’Hanley and C.J. Howie, who are respectively expecting children with their partners in June of this year.
A Tip of the (Hard) Hat to Service Excellence! Prior to becoming Flynn Canada’s Victoria Branch in May, 2003, Armour Roofing focused primarily on production roofing. As Flynn is known for its 24-hour emergency service program, it was an important part of our strategic business development plan to introduce a Service Department on Vancouver Island. Under the leadership of Service Manager Rick Fisher, this department has grown exponentially over the past twoand-a-half years. Rick and his Service Crew of Herb Smith, Nick Wilson, Jeff Thul and Doug Jackson have provided exceptional service to both commercial and residential property owners. Case-in-point was a recent project Flynn completed at Woodgrove Shopping Centre in Nanaimo. Fire had destroyed part of a Wal-Mart store and severely damaged
its roof. Rick and his team were called in to assist in assessing damages and subsequently performed the necessary repairs and re-roofing to allow the retailer to get back up and running as quickly as possible. The following is an excerpt from a Wal-Mart executive’s “thank you” letter: “We wanted to thank you and your team for your quick reaction. You did an excellent job of putting the resources to the job so that repairs were completed quickly and efficiently…we appreciate your communication between the store management team and the shopping centre management.” The Operations Manager of the shopping centre had this to say about his experience with Flynn:
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, and your crew, for the exceptional job you did. You can count on me to call Flynn for all my roofing needs.” Now that’s how you spell success! This commitment to service excellence has enabled our Service Department to enjoy significant growth and expansion. To the Victoria Crews as well as the Flynn Service Crews right across the country, the rest of Flynn, as well as your customers, thank you for your hard work and dedication. 24/7 Service Departments are a huge asset to all Branches of our company. As we grow these departments, the future looks bright. Who knows, maybe we’ll be a walk on to all Wal-Mart sites—new and existing. Ledcor Turns to Flynn Edmonton for Huge SBS Casino Roof Casinos are big money and are designed as true entertainment centres. Enoch Cree First Nation, just outside of Edmonton, has recently added to the list of these popular facilities. The $140 million luxury resort
offers a 362,600 square foot casino, a hotel, and a sports complex. The project created 860 direct construction jobs but will also employ some 700 full and part-time positions when complete in 2006. Ledcor is the general contractor for the project and came to Flynn to negotiate the huge SBS roof. Manpower, financial capability, bonding capabilities, ability to meet scheduling requirements, and general expertise in the products and applications specified were all contributing factors in the decision to entrust Flynn to get it done on time and on budget.

The extension to Building BU-101 had complex project requirements but the aggressive schedules were met in a safe and productive manner. The Bantrel Company was the lead designer while both the Bantrel and Ledcor Industries shared contracting duties.

Prairies City of Regina Wastewater Treatment Plant, Control & Services Building The Regina Branch was awarded the contract for the roofing as well as the foam panels and architectural composite wall panels. The Branch supplied and installed some 5,500 square feet of metal roof deck, 5,400 square feet of EPDM roof system, 2,800 square feet of 3” foam panel, installed horizontally, and 300 square feet of Accumet 2000 composite wall panel. Just another example of the versatility, the capability, and the depth that Flynn has to offer. And having it right across the country makes it a lot easier for general contractors, who only have to deal with one subcontractor for the complete exterior envelope of a building. New Regina Community Corrections Centre Regina Branch recently completed work on the Corrections Centre in Regina’s city core. Our Crews supplied and installed close to 8,000 square feet of new BUR roof system on multi-level roof areas. In addition to the roofing, more than 10,000 square feet of
Corrugated Metal Panel complete with 2” Styrospan insulation, z-bars and air barrier. The metal panels are located in numerous locations over the entire building. There was a considerable amount of detail work, as seen below. Saskatoon Centennial Auditorium expansion The Saskatoon Branch successfully laid more than 29,000 square feet of new SBS roofing along with 9,000 square feet of Re-roof on this project. Our hardworking Crew consisted of (L–R): Sly Baron, Leon Sparvier, Larson Sparvier, and Len Ginter.

Prairie News Saskatoon Branch welcomes Greg Mylks as an Estimator. Greg has had many years of industry experience at Vicwest. Julius Turta also joined Flynn Saskatoon as a Project Manager. The Branch wishes Ryley Koch, their former Metal Estimator, all the best in his new position in the Calgary office. And Joel Scott is making plans for his proposed transfer from the Winnipeg Branch to Halifax in May 2006.

Brendan Lowndes recently received the award for Most Outstanding Journeyman in the Roofer and Roofer Scholarship Trade for 2004–2005. The award is presented annually by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission. Congratulations Brendan for your outstanding achievement in your class. Congratulations to Gina Girard (now Gina Baker), Winnipeg Payroll, on her marriage to Duane Baker last August. The Regina Branch celebrated the marriage of Pete Kryzanowski, Roofing, to Bonnie Dyck in September. And congratulations to Jerry Horne on his marriage to Jessica Kant. They were married on New Year’s Eve in Victoria, BC. We would also like to congratulate one of our Saskatoon Metal Foreman, Burton Kucher on his marriage to Tara. And last but not least, to Terry Ozmun and his wife Kathleen on the birth of their son Teagan Joseph, as well as to Jason Hall and his wife Cathy on the birth of their daughter Grace.

Ontario Freak Storm Slams Hamilton Flynn picks up the pieces Last November, a freak late fall storm created an F3 tornado; ripping off roofs and leaving residential and commercial areas of Hamilton and Stoney Creek in shambles. Hamilton actually saw a series of tornadoes touch down at different locations across the city. The Niagara Service department was soon dispatched to two buildings that required emergency roofing work. The first call was for a small die-casting plant near our shop at 428 Seaman St., Stoney Creek. It had had its roof completely torn off by the twister. Our forces were on site the next morning to re-roof the structure. The second emergency call was for Lawfield High School on Hamilton’s mountain, which received a great deal of media attention as the storm had torn the roof completely off of the gymnasium, leaving only pieces of the Siporex deck in tact. The storm had actually shifted the building on its upper floor slabs, causing massive structural damage. We were awarded the difficult job of removing the Siporex panels and replacing the roof with a temporary one. The work was completed safely and efficiently despite the difficult weather conditions.
Ottawa Branch Expansion Following in the footsteps of Toronto’s old Carlingview facility The Ottawa Branch is expanding quickly to meet the growing business demands of the region. Since its inception in 2003, the Ottawa Branch has more than doubled in size. Like Carlingview in Toronto, the Ottawa
facility required more office space. And just like Toronto, Ottawa is solving their expansion dilemma by adding a new office trailer that gives them instant space. Don’t laugh, these trailers are nicer than the buildings they adjoin! They can range from as small as 80 to 800 square feet double-wide and come fully equipped. They add a quick and portable space for a rapidly growing branch. Congratulations to Jeff Aviss and his team.

Flynn is always happy to oblige. In fact, we promote ourselves as “total building envelope” contractors for both roof and wall systems. Well, it’s working in Ottawa as both the new MBNA Office Tower and the OSI Warehouse feature our ever-growing presence in the metal market in Ottawa.
OSI Warehouse More than 60,000 sq ft of loose laid EPDM ballasted roof system was installed on this project. We also supplied and installed more than 23,000 sq ft of horizontally and vertically applied Corrugated Galvalume and AD300. Flat blue feature bands accent the facility. Our Roofing Foreman was Alain D’Amour with Metal Foreman Paul Richards. The contractor was J-COR from Ottawa.
MBNA Office Tower This project became the first Accumet architectural composite panel project for the Ottawa Branch. More than 8,000 square feet of 4-mm thick fire-resistant aluminum composite material was supplied and installed. In addition, 16,000 square feet of conventional SBS Modified Roofing System was installed. The contractor was Daoust Construction. Flynn’s Roofing Foreman was Michel Dupuis and our Metal Foreman was Jacques Deslauriers.
SAS Building Project Nears Completion in Toronto The SAS Building (pictured above and below) is an eight-story office complex located at 280 King St. East in Toronto. This is another Giffels Contracting project, with the NORR partnership acting as architect. Flynn’s scope of work included some 54,500 square feet of AxiomPlus aluminum platewall architectural panels. In addition to the aluminum panels, we supplied and installed metal deck and cladding. A soffit 30 feet above the 8th floor terrace made for a challenge both in detailing and installation work. Anticipated completion of the project was late February.
Southlake Regional Health Centre A work-in-progress Newmarket is home to yet another hospital (below); adding to Flynn’s growing reputation as the “go to” contractor for building envelope work on hospitals. The original Phase 1 project was completed by Vicwest, but when Flynn took over the Contracting Division of Vicwest, it took on Phases 2 and 3. Almost 38,000 sq ft of panel and 5,000 sq ft of pre-painted aluminum cladding were installed over both phases. Phase 2 started in November, ‘05 with an anticipated completion in the spring of ‘06. Ellis Don is the general contractor while Parkin Associates were the architects. Phase 2 is a retrofit with metal cladding over the existing brick building. Phase 3 is a courtyard wall. We are now looking at aluminum panels for a further parking garage expansion. Drafting was provided by Nestor Pineda, with special thanks to Don Delaney.

Toronto Branch Celebrates “Christmas is For Kids” Event Tracy McManus, wife of Vice-President John McManus, and Ally Flynn, wife of President Doug Flynn, organized a “Christmas is For Kids” event at Woodbine Fantasy Fair in Toronto this past December—an event they’ve put on for the past number of years. Tracy and Ally would like to acknowledge that a great deal of the success of the event was due to the hard work contributed by Sharda Rampersaud and Denise Dindyal from the Toronto Branch. With Sharda’s help, Tracy ordered the gifts that each child would receive from Santa, and coordinated and distributed them according to each child’s age. Sharda made sure everyone got their invitations, and prepared the gift list for Tracy. She also made nametags for each child and adult who attended. Ally Flynn looked after the other huge task—the food. More than 600 people attended this year, including some 300 children, and Ally made sure no one left hungry. Each child was given a voucher for cotton candy, donuts, chips, juice, and pizza. It was hard to say who had more fun, the children or their parents! Marg Malone, Receptionist, Toronto Branch, says she can’t wait for next year, “maybe by then some of the children will have come down from their sugar high?” (We wonder about Marg’s though?) Special thanks to Tracy and Ally and everyone who made it such an overwhelming success!
Ladies Potluck a Big Hit in Toronto Barb Ciccone (good ‘ole Barb, eh?) approached John McManus to say that the ladies would like to have another potluck luncheon. Since Corporate has now joined up with the Toronto Branch, there were—of course— more ladies… which in turn meant more food. A wide variety of delicious meals were brought in and shared by all. As Marg Malone eloquently put it, “Actually, the women shared first and then the men were invited to join us as there was plenty of food”. John very generously supplied the wine. (What happened to beer and pizza?) They had a good time getting together for an hour or so… to talk about everyone. Just kidding! Or perhaps it was the guys doing the talking… but Doug knew better.

Maritimes New Health Park Project in Sydney, Nova Scotia Some 1800 Accumet 2000 panels (in a combination of medium bronze and silver metallic finishes) and some 17,000 square feet of EPDM roofing will be installed on this Health Park expansion project in Sydney (below). In early 2005, Flynn completed work on the adjacent Renal Dialysis Unit (right and cover) where we installed more than 6,000 square feet of dramatic insulated hidden fastener sandwich panel around the building’s fascia. Horizontally-applied corrugated cladding was used as fascia panels and a perforated soffit was added for additional architectural flare. Robert MacKinnon, Alfie Clarke, and Gerard MacNeil did a great job with their quality workmanship on time and on budget performance. JonelJim Concrete was the contractor on the Dialysis Unit as they will be on the new Health Park building. The newest project will have composite panels installed over 4” insulation and z-bars. Another 7,000 square feet of foam panel and 3,000 square foot of TPO roofing will be installed on the penthouse as well as the link which will connect the new facility to the existing Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Both of these facilities are adjacent to the Renal Dialysis Unit. Our portion of the project begins in the spring of 2006 after the main structure is completed.
High Profile Bedford New Brewery Highway Condo for Molson Facility Project Completed in Moncton Flynn Halifax recently completed the high profile Terrace Condominiums, located on the Bedford Highway and the shores of the beautiful Bedford Basin and Halifax Harbour. The project boasts a pleasing combination of Architectural Tradition 100 standing seam roofing as well as a corrugated wall cladding system; both in a GalvalumePlus finish. Our Crew, headed by Foreman Greg Nickerson, installed the entire roof system including the engineered structural stud framing. More than 20,000 square feet of corrugated & tradition profiles were supplied and installed. Greg and his Crew did excellent work and finished the work on schedule and on budget.
Flynn Moncton is finishing up the installation of an 110,000 square foot roof system on the new Molson Brewery facility in the city. The project will be completed this spring when curbs for the rooftop mechanical systems are installed. The grand opening of the plant will be in the fall of 2006. Roger LeBlanc, Foreman for the project, is maintaining both schedule and budget on the job and should be congratulated. Keep up the good work for a successful completion.

Brunswick Sardine Plant Backs Harbour, New Brunswick, was the site of a major high-profile and challenging reroof project for Flynn (below). The project required extensive roofing experience to complete safely and productively. Congratulations to Foreman Roger Savoie and his Crew on a job completed safely, on time and on budget.
Halifax Airport Project Calls in the “Cavalry” Our work is progressing well on this airport project, as Flynn recently completed the Commuter portion. As reported in the Spring edition of the Flash, Flynn Halifax is working with PCL Constructors on this major terminal upgrade. To date, our Crews have installed approximately 3,000 Accumet 2000 architectural composite panels. With the completion deadline drawing near, the Branch had to make a “cry for help“ to other Flynn Branches across Canada for experienced composite panel installers. Their pleas were answered, as additional manpower arrived from Winnipeg, Toronto,
and Newfoundland. New Moncton Hospital Addition Ready to Go
In March of this year, Flynn Moncton will start the roofing on the Moncton City Hospital redevelopment project for PCL Constructors. This will be the Branch’s largest single project to date and continues our tradition of successfully obtained hospital projects.
