Der Dean entspringt als kleiner Bach hoch im Chilcotin Plateau mitten in British Columbia. Er bahnt sich seinen Weg zum Pazifik durch das Nimpo und Anahim Seen Gebiet, wo viele Stromschnellen und Was serfälle einen weiten Aufstieg der Steelhead und Lachse verhindern. So konzentriert sich die Population der Fische auf den unteren und mittleren Teil des Dean Rivers. Der Summer Run der Steelhead beginnt bereits im Juni und endet mit Ende September. Ein Canyon nahe der Mündung in die mittlere Sektion verhindert, dass die schwäche ren Fische aufsteigen. Nur die starken Steelheads, Königlachse und Silberlachse schaffen es durch den Canyon in die mittlere Sektion des Dean.
Das Durchschnittsgewicht der Steelhead liegt zwischen zehn und zwölf Pfund – die ganz großen Fische werden jedoch jedes Jahr mit gut über 20 Pfund gefangen. Die Königslachse, die im Juni und Juli in den Dean kommen können sogar über 50 Pfund schwer sein. Spät im August beginnt der Silberlachsaufstieg – die Lachse werden bis zu 20 Pfund schwer.
Der Dean ist ein Dry Fly Paradies für Steelhead. Christoph und mich hat es sehr gereizt, Steelheads mit der Trockenfliege zu überlisten. Bei den meisten unserer Fänge haben wir das geschafft.
Am Dean River einen Platz zum Fischen zu bekommen, ist ein großes Privileg. Wir haben es meinem Freund Peter Jones zu verdanken, dass wir die Möglichkeit erhalten haben. Christoph und ich hatten eine tolle Woche mit viel Spaß, gutem Essen, perfektem Service und nicht weniger als 24 Steelheads.
The Dean originates as a small creek high in the Chilcotin Plateau in central British Columbia. It makes its way to the Pacific Ocean through the Nimpo and Anahim Lakes area, where many rapids and waterfalls prevent steelhead and salmon from moving higher. So the fish popu lation is concentrated in the lower and middle parts of Dean River. The Steelhead Summer Run begins in June and ends at the end of September. A canyon near the mouth of the middle section prevents the weaker fish from ascending. Only the strong steelheads, king salmon and coho salmon make it through the canyon to the middle section of the Dean.
Steelheads average between 10 and 12 pounds, but the big fish are caught well over 20 pounds each year. The king salmon that come into the Dean in June and July can weigh in excess of 50 pounds. Late in August the coho salmon run begins - the salmon can weigh up to 20 pounds.
The Dean is a dry fly paradise for steelheads. Christoph and I were very interested in outwitting steelheads with a dry fly. We managed to do that on most of our catches.
Getting a place to fish on the Dean River is a great privilege. We have my friend Peter Jones to thank for giving us the opportunity. Christoph and I had a great week with lots of fun, good food, perfect service and no fewer than 24 Steelheads.
