George's Pursuit Across The Perilous Ocean Book Launch - 20th September 2018

The book launch took place on sailing barge, The Hydrogen at Maldon, hired from Topsail Charters Ltd. Built in 1906, she is the largest surviving wooden barge, a Coaster who’s fine lines and sturdy construction are a great example of the shipwright’s craft. We thought it was a really interesting venue to hold the launch! We had a life size George cut out ready for everyone to have a selfie with and the nautical theme tied in well. A big thank you to all everyone who came along and made it a great evening including the Deputy Mayor of Chelmsford, Christine Garrett! Find out more on P.16

day-to-day language.

This got me thinking about how wonderful language actually is. It continually adapts to change and takes all kinds of environmental influences in its stride but, at the same time, it builds on its rich heritage. That’s a great example of maintaining a balance between the old and the new.

The same cannot always be said in business. I often see two opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to business owners adapting to changing circumstances.

At one end, I see owners who are constantly chopping and changing their focus and direction as they seek the magic formula, speaking a language that their team cannot understand or

I’ll leave you to think through the first question for yourself but let’s consider this idea of ‘potential’ together. It’s one of those words that is banded around all the time, usually in the form of a question about whether someone is making the most of their skills or an opportunity.

I’m sure that reading this now, you can think of someone who just isn’t ‘reaching their potential’ but have you ever stopped to apply this line of thinking to your business? If, as I claimed at the beginning of this chapter, every business has the potential to grow successfully, why doesn’t every business do this?

What is it that makes one company succeed at reaching their potential while another one fails?

keep up with. Here’s your third question: At the other end are those owners who are stuck in the past and who are not prepared to change their thinking as they hang on to ‘Olde English’.

The truth is that, although everything changes and we all have the potential to adapt and work successfully with the change, sometimes it takes a little time before that change is accepted. Just as words can become adopted and used in everyday speech long before being accepted into a dictionary.

The problem for business is that, if you leave it too long to accept change, it could be fatal.

I’d like you to do a little exercise now. Take a look at your business and ask yourself three questions.

3. What is stopping you from taking your business to its full potential?

To help you find some answers, I want to go over a scoring mechanism I mentioned in the first Levels book which we can use to assess performance against potential.

To help you find some answers, I want to go over a scoring mechanism I mentioned in the first Levels book which we can use to assess performance against potential.

The Tale of a Business Adventure from Start-Up to Financial Freedom Author and Business Coach, Ray Moore gives us an insight into his new book

How does the new book differ from your first two books? George's Pursuit Across the Perilous Ocean is written as more of a story than a business book. Because you're following George on his journey and picking up business tips along the way, it's easy to get into and enjoy!

What makes the book helpful to business owners? For a start, the book can be read in around 1 hour so for business owners with limited time, it's a quick read! You get to see George's business start from the ground up and I think it's that journey and seeing the challenges he faces that resonate with other business owners. Hopefully seeing how George overcomes certain things will help others in similar situations.

16|

FBM Autumn 2018

Where did George's character come from?

Captain George

George is based on your typical hard working business owner. He starts off young and full of hope and things go well for a while but when things start to plateau, he has to learn the best thing to do to encourage his business to keep growing.

What are some of the challenges that George faces throughout the book? Like any business owner, George faces many challenges and hurdles. I think one of the fundamental challenges business owners struggle with is trusting and allowing your staff to take control when

Fishing Trawler George

your business gets to a certain size.

It's also accepting that your staff may know more than you and that's a positive thing!

What was the key to George's business growth and eventual financial freedom? When growing a business, the owner mustn't be afraid to leave their comfort

Power Boat George

zone! In fact, multiple comfort zones will have to be left throughout the growth journey as we see with George.

Although it can be daunting, he wasn't scared to leave his comfort zone and take risks to push his business to the next level.

All businesses have periods of plateau but if you don't leave your comfort zone your business will be in a permanent state of plateau and therefore not growing.
