Meet Derek Wilson FLPL's new Executive Director When Derek Wilson finished college with his degree in history, he wasn’t planning to become a librarian. “Fresh out of college, I visited the library a lot and saw a job posting for help and applied. While working there, the librarian at the time convinced me to pursue a career as a librarian and encouraged me to get my Masters in Library Science.”

That bit of encouragement from his local librarian was the beginning of a 24-year career in the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System in Georgia. And now, it has led him to becoming the new Executive Director at Florence-Lauderdale Public Library.

Derek’s experience and passion for service make him a perfect fit for FLPL, according to Andy Frith, the Chairperson of the library’s Board of Directors. “We are looking forward to the enthusiasm that Derek has for all things related to the library. His 20-plus year career will be a real asset to our community.”

Derek spent those two decades working his way up from being a library assistant to being the Branch Manager of the East Point Public Library, located in a suburb southwest of Atlanta. During that time, Derek has held multiple library positions, including Young Adult Librarian and Assistant Branch Manager. These varied roles have given Derek a broad understanding of library services, and he has a special love for helping young adults, after working specifically with teens for 14 years.

In this issue of Renew, we are exploring the importance of lifelong reading and learning, and we’re showing a glimpse of just some of the work that the staff at FLPL does to encourage and enable that reading and learning for all ages and demographics.

We asked Derek why lifelong reading matters and what libraries mean to him.

“I believe libraries make us better,” Derek said. “I believe reading fosters a thirst for knowledge that helps us grow. Reading is an opportunity to learn and visualize the impossible and work toward making those dreams come true. As a kid I read books on traveling, and as an adult I got those opportunities to travel to places I had only read about as a kid.”

Derek is used to being recognized as “the library man,” so if you see Derek and his family out and about in Florence, be sure to welcome them and let them know about all of the great things our town has to offer. He says his family is looking forward to spending time together in “a community rich in tradition and history.”

Derek is excited about the opportunity to work in a vibrant library with a dedicated and talented staff. He says the position appealed to him not only because it would give him “the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with the community and staff, but also (because) I will be learning from them.”

“Libraries are important because they provide users the opportunity to change their lives in big and small ways,” Derek says. “I chose this field because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. My vision for the FlorenceLauderdale Public Library is to make it a place where we help people find answers to their questions. The hope is that we are a beginning and ending for their search. However, (in cases where) we can’t fulfill their request, the hope is that we get them started on their search in the right direction. I want the community and the library patrons to know that the library is here to help them grow and achieve their goals in life through the resources that we offer.”

About the exhibit: I Have a Voice: Tennessee’s African American Musical Heritage The Volunteer State has been the birthplace of some of the most influential music in the world, from the Beale Street blues clubs in Memphis, to the R&B scene on Nashville’s Jefferson Street and Knoxville’s Gem Theatre. And much of that music has close ties to the Shoals, with W.C. Handy having played and composed in Memphis for several years and with Sun Records’ having close connection with Florence.

The history of African American music follows the hardship of slavery through today. American slaves adapted their African ancestors’ music to hand clapping, singing, the fiddle, and the African–derived banjo. Expressing their sorrows from bondage and joy for their ultimate deliverance, these enslaved persons found an original, musical voice sung in their spirituals and folk music. This voice has left a monumental cultural stamp on American music, including blues, ragtime, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and soul music. In turn, this music has influenced and enriched music around the world.

Organized by the Tennessee State Museum, I Have a Voice explores the music of legends such as Bessie Smith, B.B. King, DeFord Bailey, and Tina Turner.

This project is supported by the Alabama Humanities Foundation, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMER READING Prize Incentives Encourage Kids to Summer Reading Programs (SRPs) are a hallmark of public libraries across the country. At FLPL, summer is our most active time of the year, with kids and teens visiting the library for daily programs. But the main goal of SRP is to encourage students to read during the summer, and we do that through incentive programs that allow our young readers to earn and win prizes through reading. Even the busiest families—who perhaps can’t get to the library often for specific events—can participate. As long as you can register for the program and turn in reading logs, your kids can win prizes by reading this summer.

“Reading can be a powerful equalizer for our kids,” says Jill Edwards, Assistant Principal at Harlan Elementary School. “They may not all get to experience adventure, mystery, or suspense, but everyone can through books. Students who read 20 minutes per night demonstrate expanded vocabulary and typically outperform peers who do not. A summer reading program is a wonderful way to read for joy and provides fun incentives for our kids as well!”

Our local parents agree. Gina and Nick Reishman have signed up their 8-year-old daughter Hydie for SRP for the past three years because they know it makes a difference. “Everyone enjoys an incentive!” Gina says.

“Hydie usually scopes out the prize display case at the beginning of the program and sets her own goals based on the prizes that she wants to obtain. So yes, Hydie does read more throughout the summer because of it!” She says that Hydie also enjoys getting to choose whatever books interest her rather than focusing on reading books that earn the most AR points.

For children 10 and under, our Children’s SRP offers a simple reading log. Children like Hydie write down the books they read (or parents write down books read to them). Those book logs earn them prize tickets, which can be exchanged for fun toys, treats, and other prizes, or they can be used to enter into drawings for grand prizes, which include tickets to places like Skyzone and the Space and Rocket Center.

FOR KIDS & TEENS Read for Fun All Summer Long!

Our Teen SRP , designed for students aged 11-18 , has its own reading incentives. Teens can fill out a prize entry for every book they read over the summer, and they can choose to enter drawings for several prizes, including Steam gift cards, books and movie prize packs, and a Harry Potter prize pack. Plus, the ten teens who read the most books will be entered into the special drawing for a $100 Amazon gift card.

“I find the summer reading program at FLPL particularly beneficial for promoting the wellness of our community’s teen population,” says Dr. Jessica Simmons Mitchell, Associate Professor of Education at the University of North Alabama. “This program gives teens freedom to choose a text based on interest and preference, an important skill in the promotion of a lifelong appreciation for learning.

(The Teen SRP) also helps students connect to content knowledge in a way that builds an authentic interest in a given discipline, (and it provides) the opportunity to build the background knowledge needed to grasp academic concepts across a variety of disciplines once the new school year resumes.”

Whether you have a baby or toddler who is just getting used to holding board books or a teenager starting to explore new interests, FLPL’s Summer Reading Programs will keep your kids reading and learning all summer long.

ADULT SUMMER READING Summer Reading isn't just for kids!

This summer, there are 3 ways that adults 18 and up can win prizes at the library.

and BOOK CLUBS at FLPL Last year, the library started a new set of book clubs to provide the community with opportunities to branch out in their reading habits and to have in-depth discussions with other book lovers.

YA for Adults Book Club 2nd Mondays at 5:30 pm Morgan Mizell had always wanted to join a book club, but had never seen one that seemed like the right fit. That is, until she saw fliers for FLPL’s YA for Adults Book Club.

“YA” stands for “young adult” literature, and it is generally geared toward teenagers, but is often enjoyed by all ages. Many YA books explore themes and topics with surprising nuance and depth, which make them perfect for adult discussion.

“Reading a book is a joy in itself,” said Morgan, “but having the opportunity to also discuss and hear other perspectives on a book is so much better. We have a really laid back group of people and I look forward to seeing them each month. I feel very lucky to have this book club to look forward to and even luckier to have the library we have in this community.”

Booked for Lunch/Novel Conversations 2nd Tuesdays at 1:00 pm or 5:30 pm Louise Huddleston found out about the library’s book clubs through Facebook. “I had wanted to take part in a book club for a number of years and I had just recently retired, making that more possible.” Much like Morgan, she looks forward to reading each month’s book—often something she wouldn’t have picked up herself—and she has enjoyed meeting new people through the discussion group.

“C.S. Lewis is credited with saying that ‘we read to know we are not alone,’” said Louise.

“Although he probably was referring to the experience of finding a reflection of ourselves in what we read, book clubs are another way to read and know we are not alone. Listening to what others have discovered and what they have focused on when they read is often eyeopening and leads to you seeing a book in a different light. I think any opportunity to exchange ideas, to go outside our comfort zone, but in a safe environment, is a positive.

And, to me that’s what public libraries do best —let us search, reach, learn, exchange ideas—in a community that is open to everyone and their ideas.”

FLPL Services Help Mr. Aune, 97, Uses Ebooks & Audiobooks to Keep Reading Henrick J. Aune loves to read. His favorite books are murder mysteries by authors like David Baldacci and Lee Child. But at age 97, his deteriorating eyesight makes it difficult for him to be able to read text, and it’s made it impossible for him to drive to the library to check out books. Thanks to the library’s ebook collection, though, these limitations haven’t kept him from enjoying the books he loves.

Mary Moore began using the library’s Books by Mail service 3 years ago. Mrs. Moore uses a wheelchair and has vision problems, so the library’s large print books allow her to indulge in her love for reading. Her daughter, Le Traylor, is a social worker and learned of the program through her job. “My work schedule makes it difficult for me to get to the library during open hours, so this service is a God-send for my mother and me.”

Meet a

FRIEND

Library

Dr. David Curott

Treasurer of the Friends of the Library How long have you been a member of the Friends, and how have you participated in the Friends over the years?

I don’t remember when I first joined the Friends, but I know I participated in the Bookstore before moving to the “new library.” I have worked at the desk in the Bookstore ever since the present library opened its doors (in 2002). I became Friends Treasurer in 2005 and have been Treasurer ever since, except for a brief 3 year period.

How do you believe FLPL helps make our community strong?

The library is one of the centers for activity in a town. It fills many types of needs for the people of the community, whether it be to provide access to information or serve as a meeting space for community groups. The library is much more than just a place for reading. I just can't imagine a town without a library, and this community is blessed with one so beautiful.

How do you use the library?

I check out books and an occasional e-book. The family history room is a local treasure which I use often. I belong to many organizations like the Writer’s Guild, the Tennessee Valley Historical Society, and the Natchez Trace Genealogical Society, all of which make use of the FLPL meeting rooms. Also I attend many public meetings held in the library.

Over the years, the Friends have donated over a million dollars to the library. Is there any particular contribution from the Friends that you've been most proud of?

I’ve been delighted, and sometimes surprised, by the many different ways the library makes significant contributions to the community. However, I feel the programs for young (non-adult) readers are the most important. They are the future. When you build a good foundation, then a great future is assured.

If someone were to ask you "Why should I join the Friends?" what would you tell them?

The Friends is a major influence on the special activities of the library, for example youth and teen programs. It does this through dues, used book donations, and incredible volunteer help by Lauderdale citizens. I find the Friends are a stimulating and wonderful group of people to join.

What difference can a Friend of the Library make?

Since being founded in 2003, the Friends of Florence-Lauderdale Public Library have contributed $1,069,608.86 to the library.

These funds have made a difference in our community, providing large print books for seniors and the visually impaired, ebooks for people who can’t physically visit the library, public computers that people use every day to apply for jobs and take online courses, and funding for our children’s and teen Summer Reading Programs, which help young people develop a love of reading and perform better in school.

These funds have come from membership dues and from the Friends Bookstore, which is staffed entirely by volunteers. Join the Friends using the form below. If you’d like to pay your membership with a debit/credit card, just visit the Friends Bookstore.
