build confidence for beginner flower arrangers as I find they almost arrange themselves. To prove this maxim, rather than enlist a professional, I appointed myself to create arrangements with this year’s winner. Cut the stems and drop them in a vase, urn, or jardinière of any size or shape filled with fresh clean water, and voilà! Midway through the photo shoot, our Editorial Director, Karen Carroll, added a note of whimsy by suggesting we shoot the flowers on my checkerboard kitchen floor. Brilliant!

The shot turned out to be so striking that we picked it as this issue’s cover.

We also spotlight four gardeners who take a maximalist approach to creating their outdoor spaces, whether urban patio in Northern California or poolside oasis in South Florida (which happens to belong to longtime FLOWER friend Renny Reynolds).

And matching the beauty of the flowers and gardens in this issue is a pair of interior projects—a renovation and reimagining of a New York City apartment by Dallas design wizard Cathy Kincaid and a new build in Birmingham, Alabama, designed by Hundley Hilton and dressed in icy pastels and flowers, including fresh ones from floral designer Sybil Sylvester.

IN WINTER, WE OFTEN DISMISS NATURE and outdoors as a source of wonder while lingering in the indoor cozy with a fire, a cup of tea, and a book (or magazine). But this oh-so-concise poem—eight lines, to be exact—paints the most beautiful and magical picture of the natural world and its playful surprises.

Things we might see as bothersome—a crow with its loud, abrasive caw and its association with scavenging; the cold wet surprise of snow dropping on us, or in this case, being shaken on us by said crow—can, upon closer consideration, bring delight.

Watching a lively, mischievous crow can be an unexpected source of joy; a “dust of snow” can feel refreshing, and further, offers a general awakening to a wonder of nature. Such things conspire to salvage a day and brighten a mood.

This poem recalls to me a Latin term I’ve recently heard— incurvatus in se—which means curved in on oneself. I discovered this phrase while listening to a podcast about depression.

St. Augustine coined it as a description of how one can end up depressed, or in this case, ruminating and “ruing.” Here, Robert Frost is focusing on himself and what’s before him in his day, all with a bit of dread, when a ping from the natural world transforms everything. What happens? He looks up and, I imagine, laughs at himself and the wonder of a bird whose trick highlights and convicts the poet laureate of his Eeyore-like demeanor. How wondrous!

One of FLOWER’s always refreshing and surprising forces of nature is contributing garden writer Tovah Martin. She has been gracing our pages for years—educating, inspiring, and entertaining us with her tales from the outdoors. I’m not comparing Tovah to a crow, but here in midwinter, her tutorial on bulb forcing, along with her evocative description of a lush tropical Key West garden, definitely defies the winter doldrums.

Our 2026 Flower of the Year, the Fire Light Hydrangea, also gives us an unlikely winter encounter and a promising prelude to warmer days ahead. I always recommend using hydrangeas to

Strong Finish Designer James Farmer shares how he addresses the walls to create an eye-catching entryway.

Paint No two entries are the same—so much depends on light and the direction they face. I like a fairly neutral wall color that allows you to change out things such as branches or stems according to the seasons.

Lacquer I love lacquering in tight spaces for a bold look. A jewel box entry can be quite effective when done correctly.

Lacquering is a complex process that cannot be faked!

Wood I choose wood species for their intended character and prefer allowing it to show through. Stains tend to be a quick ticket to the wrong station! Pecky cypress and knotty pine are great options.

Curtains When covering a wall with curtains, I prefer geometrics, such as a larger window pane or trellis print, to create visual appeal where there may not be strong architecture present.

hat better way to ring in 2026 than with our Flower of the Year? We gathered our team of experts—from floral designers and event planners to stylists and landscape professionals— to help us choose this vibrant bloom. Though many differing opinions swirled, one thing was clear: This panel cared most about selecting a flower they have grown—or could grow—in their own backyards. Accessibility was key, and they zealously clung to some of their own garden favorites.

We’re tickled pink our experts arrived at the Fire Light Hydrangea, a member of the beloved panicle hydrangea family known for its shapely, ice-cream-cone profile and its

candy-box assortment of color palettes. The creamy white blooms burst forth in June, gradually unveiling a spectrum of dreamy pink shades before eventually fading into a deep burgundy in early September.

The Fire Light Hydrangea can be grown in a variety of zones from 3-9. It survives the harsh winters of the American Northeast while also withstanding the unforgiving summers of the Deep South. Readily available at most gardening stores, this flower blossoms year after year, creating an annual treasure trove of blooms. And the best part? We can easily grow these showstopping blooms in our own gardens.

While studying art at the College of Charleston, what style or period were you most drawn toward?

Abstract Expressionism. Whenever I’m in a museum, that’s where you’ll find me. I love the color combinations and the freedom in how those artists painted. It was such a cool moment in art when things shifted from being super realistic to more about feeling and magical interpretations. When I was first finding my footing as an artist, I thought my goal was to make my paintings look like photographs, but the older I get, the more I want them to feel dreamlike.

world around you. Where and when are you most inspired?

I find inspiration wherever I am, whether it’s at a friend’s house or an antiques store or somewhere I’ve traveled. I’m always keeping an eye out for little details, objects, or places that speak to me. I’ve also found that my inspiration depends on the space I’m in—not just physically but the season of life I’m in as well. You’d think I might feel less inspired during busier times, but it’s actually the opposite. When life seems full or chaotic, creating becomes my outlet. It’s how I process and express what’s going on around me.

Artist who inspires me: I love exploring the world of art, and I get inspired by what my kids bring home from school almost as much as paintings in a museum. However, if I had to pick an all-time favorite artist it would be Matisse.

then a collection will grow out of a painting series. One of my favorites is the “Brooks” pattern. It started as a fish painting from a recent series and then evolved into both fabric and wallpaper. It was so fun to see it go from a canvas to something multiple people could have in their homes.

Do you have a particular decorating style you favor when thinking about how your work plays into interiors?

I’m really inspired by time. I want my pieces to feel like they could have been created decades ago while still fitting beautifully in the present. My goal is always to design and create things that aren’t replaced often but instead feel lasting and loved over the years.

Are there other areas of the design world you’re interested in pursuing?

One of the fun things about pattern making is that the possibilities are endless! I can’t imagine ever getting bored of it. Recently, we dipped our toes into a new mahjong line, and it was such a fun way to see my designs come to life in a completely different format.

Go-to flower at home: Orchids—I love them! They last a long time and always bring life to the space.

Studio playlist: I’ve been listening to Ellie Holcomb a lot. She’s a Christian artist based in Nashville. The music I find most peaceful, and the kind I want to memorize the words to, tends to be about my faith. It keeps my head and heart in the right space while I’m painting or even just driving around town.

No room is complete without: A plant. My favorite kind is usually the most unusual one I can find at the store. I love bringing it home like a new pet goldfish. I think I have around 12 “goldfish” at home right now.

ising to a challenge is what Craig Reynolds does best.

Give him a tight lot with privacy-screening issues, and he’s in his comfort zone. Add in the necessity of accessibility for children, and he finds a matrix of answers in a web of easily traversed pathways while figuring in lounging spaces where adults can keep an eye on kids’ activities. But going above and beyond that brief is what really sparks Craig.

In addition to answering the unique specs for site design in this Key West garden, he created a richly complex tropical paradise using a lush palette of palms, bromeliads, ferns, and other tropicals.

While the property originally had a few plants in residence, it also had some challenges. “There were piles of stacked limestone rocks—probably added as a barrier to reduce street noise,” Craig says. “It was a supreme mess.” His primary goal was to make the ⅓-acre garden feel spacious for the family’s eight children, but he also wanted to give the landscape some intrigue and a sense of adventure. In short, there was nothing simple about his plan.

Craig’s signature style harnesses the Key West tropical vibe and builds on it, often with a sort of surrealistic result. For this project, his design covers every square foot while creating meaningful connections among layers. Drama expands throughout the space with a cast of thousands of plants, but continuity is key. With very few blossoms, the garden dialogue happens between textures and colors in his choice of plant

materials. “It’s about subtle leaf blush and foliar contrast,” says Craig. “If you feel as if you’re dwarfed in a massive leafy arrangement, that’s exactly the intent.”

Creating a sense of adventure was anything but straightforward. Although linear pathways were necessary for accessibility, Craig juggled the challenge of maintaining that sense of expansiveness while also delivering the “conceal and reveal” drama he loves to weave. “Working in Key West, we learn to tightly pack plants for privacy while also giving the garden a spacious feel,” Craig says. His trick is to layer understory plants against midrange and overstory players. To keep the display from feeling dizzying, he masses plants—especially groundcovers—and then creates periodic color accents to move the eye along. There’s soothing repetition but also special highlights.

For his plant palette, Craig reached beyond Florida natives to expand into true tropicals from the Caribbean. Although there’s an inherent density, it’s all carefully defined. “The garden should always look thoughtfully finished,” he says of walking the fine line between wild and cultivated.

Deep knowledge of the climate and the plant material is Craig’s not-so-secret superpower. With the help of his studio associate Alex Thommes (see sidebar on page 42), he selected palms not only based on their beauty but also on how they would mature to deliver the desired density. “As you walk through the garden, you experience a conversation that gradually reveals itself,” says Craig. “The scene is rich and full; it’s almost like a pointillist painting.” And although the property has changed hands over the years, Craig and his team remain involved to tweak the scene and maintain the experience. As a result, the garden just keeps growing better.

Think of a tropical paradise, and palms set the stage. As Craig Reynolds Landscape Architects was adding the layers to this Key West enclave, the knowledge of the firm’s palm expert, Alex Thommes, came in handy. With his own collection of over 40 species, Alex modestly calls himself a “hobbyist.” But his knowledge goes far beyond the palms he personally stewards. Alex knows which ones read best planted in clusters and those that make standalone statements. He can predict growth cycles and maturity times.

And he understands interrelationships between palms and the surrounding flora and garden design. Some notable palms include: PHOENIX ROEBELENII (dwarf date palm): When choosing palms to fill a role in the garden, Alex considers more than just the fronds. Not only is the dwarf date palm appropriate for either a sunny or shaded location, the textural “boots” (remnants of frond attachments) lining the trunk add further visual appeal.

SABAL PALMETTO (cabbage palm): The fact that the durable, nearly indestructible Sabal palmetto is the state tree of Florida says it all. Not only is it resilient, it’s also sculptural and multifunctional—and relatively inexpensive. “Ferns and orchids can grow out of its boots, making a living totem in the garden,” Alex says.

COCCOTHRINAX CRINITA (old man palm): With tip-to-toe interest, the old man palm’s swollen trunk is covered in a dense beard that lasts its long lifetime. This slow-growing native of Cuba has a handsome palmate, fan-shaped leaf.

ATTALEA COHUNE (American oil palm): Alex plants this “incredibly robust stand-alone specimen,” for impact. “It catches your eye, dwarfing everything else when it starts to mature.” To Alex, the long fronds “give the appearance of a massive feather duster.”

Cathy Kincaid decided to indulge in a pied-à-terre in New York City, they did so with characteristic grace.

“They bought in a beautiful, iconic building on Fifth Avenue that faces Central Park,” Cathy says. The prewar residence, with its towering ceilings and enviable pedigree, offered just the kind of storied bones that could sustain the couple’s refined sensibility.

Cathy had already guided her clients through homes in Dallas, the South of France, East Texas, and East Hampton. For this Manhattan purchase, they were drawn to its leafy views, as well as its resonance with the husband’s early years working in the city. Cathy teamed up with architect John B. Murray to “take the apartment down to the bones.” The kitchen was refreshed, windows were replaced, and moldings were sharpened.

Cathy insists the project owes its richness to the talents of her collaborators.

“You get fabulous artisans together—from de Gournay to Penn & Fletcher to John Murray—and you get a fabulous project,” she says. The main living room showcases that collaborative spirit with plaster moldings and a coved ceiling painted in a high-gloss melon color. Here, the clients’ art anchors the scene.

“There’s a very important Bonnard above the fireplace,” says Cathy. “It was in the Bonnard show that went to the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth.”

John’s intervention honored the building’s elegance while still creating rooms a little more customized to the couple’s needs. Because New York real estate leaves little room for excess, Cathy and her clients approached one 48 F L O W E R J a n u a r y • F e b r u a r y 2 0 2 6

particular space with ingenuity. “In New York, it’s rare to have a grand dining room and a huge family room and a library like you do in Dallas,” says the designer.

Instead, she created a flexible space to host everything from TV nights to card games. Its mood draws from a surprising source. “I had an image of a room that Fleur Cowles had in her Albany apartment in London in the 60s,” Cathy says. “It had been painted by an Italian muralist.” That depiction influenced the wallcovering choice—a luminous rose-gold surface adorned with painted urns.

“We were inspired by the Annenberg estate near Palm Springs,” says Cathy, referencing William Haines’s 1960s interiors at Sunnylands. Collaborating with Penn & Fletcher, she devised trapunto quilted upholstery. “It almost looks like coral,” she says, “but it’s embroidered with little spiderwebs and butterflies.”

The effect lands somewhere between couture gown and curiosity cabinet.

In the primary bedroom overlooking the park, Cathy again turned to de Gournay and chose a wallcovering with a shimmering pale blue background and birds with pink-tipped beaks that offered a cue for the textiles.

“We custom-made the Bennison linen fabric for the draperies, putting a tiny bit of pink in it to echo the birds’ little beaks,” she says. Penn & Fletcher embroidered the Indian-inspired draperies to extend the motif.

Even the kitchen strikes a balance of historicism and modernity. “We were thinking about what kitchens were like back then,” Cathy says of the 1930s building. John designed a highly functional contemporary space that “has elements of a kitchen you would’ve seen at that time.” The high-gloss mint hue—Teresa’s Green by Farrow & Ball—grounds the space in period charm, while painted checkerboard floors impart country practicality. “It’s a trick that involves using a stencil to get the look of an inlay or a parquet,” says the designer. Even the pantry door is dressed for the occasion—upholstered in leather with rosette detailing

by P.E. Guerin, making it as durable as it is dashing.

Throughout, Cathy deflects praise. “I’m just kind of there,” she says. “I let everyone do their specialty.”

The result, however, is anything but incidental as the Fifth Avenue apartment is a master class in collaboration. “It’s really pretty,” says the designer. That understatement is pure Cathy Kincaid—an acknowledgment that the beauty of the finished project feels inevitable, as though it could never have been any other way.

Left to its own devices, winter will fail to thrill in the floral department. That’s why we conspire to help nature along.

T

here’s nothing quite like masses of spring flowers in the garden to wow your retina and rev your engine for the growing season. But what if you are longing for those blooms while cooped up indoors during the dead of winter? Never fear— —a few premature potted varieties are sure to save your sanity. For centuries, gardeners have practiced the little trick called forcing bulbs to weaken winter’s bite. The scene outside might still be blanketed in white, but with a window full of forced bulbs, you can bring colorful life inside your home.

Growing bulbs indoors allows you to become acquainted with their beauty, charms, and secrets up close. And while their fragrance might be diluted outside, a few blooms exhaling their aroma inside your home can hit your nose like an uncorked perfume bottle. Beyond those perks, there’s also the gratification of deceiving nature at her own game.

Cracking the code isn’t complicated. Bulbs need a brief—and essential—dose of winter, and you can make that happen given the magic of the refrigerator. But most don’t need the full four months that winter usually holds in its icy grip. Give hardy bulbs a couple of chill months, and they’re ready to call it spring.

Oblivious to the fact that warm weather isn’t scheduled to arrive yet, these little creations move into the business of blossoming.

Your bright windowsill is perfectly capable of furnishing that part of the sequence—and you have a front row seat.

Hyacinths are the easiest bulbs to trick and were among the first ones to instigate the tradition. In fact, hourglass-shaped hyacinth-forcing jars were all the rage in the 1800s. The process simply involves refrigerating the bulbs for two months and then suspending them with the bottoms grazing water. Soon, your hyacinths will burst into plumes of sweet-smelling blooms.

Similarly, duping daffodils into a pre-spring performance is so easy that ‘Tête-à-Tête’ bulbs are omnipresent in supermarkets.

While early narcissus (aka daffodils) classified in the miniature and cyclamineus varieties are a snap, almost all daffodils are fair game after three months in the fridge. Paperwhite narcissus (Narcissus papyraceus) are among the most popular blooms displayed in homes during winter, although these nonhardy narcissus aren’t really being forced—they don’t need a chilling sequence.

Tulips are also fair game, but the lengthy chilling windup can take three months or more. A workaround is to swing your shopping cart into the local supermarket floral section and fill it with pots of pre-chilled, pre-planted tulips such as ‘Princess Irene’ brandishing its flaming Rembrandt-type petal color. Or try the downsized species like Tulipa clusiana ‘Cynthia’, Tulipa clusiana ‘Tinka’, Tulipa bakeri ‘Lilac Wonder’, and Tulipa praestans

‘Shogun’. Still speedier are crocus, muscari (grape hyacinths), dwarf iris (Iris reticulata and Iris histrioides), and scilla. They’re a breeze with about two months of cooling, but the flowers often come and go quickly. Anemones are another good option, including glory of the snow (chionodoxa) and guinea hen flower (Fritillaria meleagris). Feeling adventuresome? Create a combo container that reads like a snapshot of spring-in-a-pot and continues to entertain for weeks (see the sidebar, page 59).

There are several different methods to make the magic happen.

Start by planting the bulbs (with tip facing up) in containers around the same time you’re inserting spring bulbs in the garden. You can use a carefully selected container that does your mini-garden justice or simply chill the bulbs in a plastic pot and then slip them into a well-chosen cachepot for display. When potting, no need to bury bulbs deeply—just cover them with an inch or so of soil. To keep the whole shebang from making a mess, drape some aluminum foil lightly over the top and then tuck them into a refrigerator (be sure to tell your family that these are not edible) or put them in an unheated garage, basement, or outbuilding that does not freeze. The goal is to keep them at 35-45° F for a couple of months, mimicking their normal winter dormancy. Wait for signs of growth—just a hint of green nudging its nose from the bulb’s tip—then move them into a cool, sunny window. An east or west-facing exposure is fine, but south will earn you the best petal color when the flowers begin to pop.

Think of this as a design opportunity. Create a garden indoors by sprinkling pots brimming with bulbs between a fiddle-leaf fig and other houseplants to create a spring underplanting. Or make a freestanding ode to spring, shuffling containers filled with forced bulbs at whim by changing the dialogue every few days.

Like their outdoor brethren, forced bulbs have a brief moment of glory and then bow out, but their transience is part of the allure. If the soil is thawed, you can plant the bygone bulbs in the garden to perform in future years. Meanwhile, you gained an intimacy that might never happen outside while flexing artistic skills that don’t often get stretched in winter. All your senses will thank you.

“I THINK OF IT AS A LIVING BOUQUET FOR THE TABLE,” Cheryl Karpeichik says. For the past couple of decades, she’s come up with the forced bulb combination planters for White Flower Farm’s catalog. Every year, she tests a dozen different combos with the hope that half will fulfill her lofty standards of scrutiny—and she’s always surprised by the achievements. Often, it’s hard to choose between the many winners.

Cheryl explains that creating these designs is not very different from composing a flower arrangement, except that with these bouquets, you start from scratch. That’s where her decades of experience with the craft and insider knowledge of bulb traits come in handy. When Cheryl pulls a combination together, she thinks first about performance as she stacks up different bulb heights. For example, many tulips and daffodils stretch when grown indoors, so she goes for more compact varieties. Of course, color themes are critical, but she also balances timing and compatibility in a container, especially when mixing species. And she’s realistic. While a big bang

would be nice, demanding that bulbs always perform simultaneously is asking a lot of Mother Nature. Instead, Cheryl aims for combos that create a meaningful succession when they come out of the refrigerator as bulbs float in and out of their prime time.

Working with three dozen bulbs can be a juggling act in a shallow, 12-inch-wide container—that’s why Cheryl plants in layers. On the bottom of the 6-inch-deep container, she snuggles in hyacinths, narcissus, and muscari (“always place all bulbs with the tips facing upward”) before filling crevices between bulbs with soil and adding a layer of potting soil between layers. Then come the tulips that drive the color scheme for the creation—usually 4 different varieties of early or midseason performers are planted on the top layer before crowning with potting soil. “Single early tulips are the easiest,” Cheryl says. Then comes approximately 13 weeks of anticipation followed by the prolonged pageant. Although Cheryl has done this for decades, she never tires of the process. As she says, “Forcing still thrills.”

Friendly Formality This classically designed home in Mountain Brook, Alabama, unites timeless proportions with a modern floor plan and plenty of Southern charm for a growing family.

“There’s a fine balance between practical and beautiful and form and function—but above all, a home is meant to be lived in,” says Elizabeth Miles, who along with Janie Jones, helms Hundley Hilton Interiors, a Birmingham-based design firm that leans into pretty interiors filled with thoughtful layers meant to evoke Southern sentiments. When approached to team up with architect Anna Evans on a new build for Hannah and Mathieu Nader, the design duo worked to fulfill the couple’s wish list for a home that would suit their large family of five children—and another due in April. Hannah and Mathieu had long admired other projects by Anna and the Hundley Hilton team, so they were already off to a great start. But the design professionals knew that to make this new house tailored to the Nader family—and ensure it would evolve with them— communication was key.

“Janie, Elizabeth, and I shared an ideas folder for a year before we even began,” says Hannah. “We filled it with inspirational colors and fabrics, design ideas, and rooms we liked—many from Hundley Hilton’s past projects.” That folder revealed

that Hannah had an affinity for florals, pastels, and blues and pinks. “My mother had a lot of florals in my childhood home in Alexander City, Alabama, and I get my love of blue from my grandmother’s blue-and-white china collection,” she says.

Janie and Elizabeth, also Southerners, share Hannah’s penchant for the soft, tailored style. They both grew up in similar surroundings and have included the same sensibilities in their own homes. “My mother is classic and chic but not afraid to take risks and mix old and new, both in fashion and in her home interiors,” Elizabeth says. “My grandparents’ house had a similar decorum, but it was always inviting and warm at the same time. It’s that sense of both beauty and comfort, playfulness and formality intersecting at just the right spot that we try to emulate.”

When it came to the architecture of the house, Anna asked the Naders to create a strategic list of must-haves. Items included fundamental needs for their growing family: a large kitchen island, smart task rooms such as a mudroom with locker bays for everyone, a generous pantry with office area

for Hannah, an office for Mathieu (he works from home), kids’ rooms upstairs, a first-floor primary bedroom with separate seating area, and well-organized closets and other storage spaces.

“They didn’t have a huge list, but everything they asked for culminated into what I call friendly formality,” Anna says.

That “friendly formality” comes across in both the floor plan and the interiors. A well-dressed, spacious entry and stairwell welcomes family and guests. Here, a deep, fringed sofa; antique chest; and contemporary center table set against walls cloaked in Leaf Trellis wallpaper by Colefax and Fowler hint at the femininity and artful blends of periods and styles in rooms to come.

“Each piece in this space tells the story of the home in unison,” says Janie.

A dining room segues off the entry, a place Hannah says is the center of their home. “I can imagine a lot of holidays and celebrations happening here for many years.” Toward the back 66 F L O W E R J a n u a r y • F e b r u a r y 2 0 2 6

of the house, the floor plan opens up with an emphasis on the large living area and adjoining kitchen. “Each space stands alone yet harmoniously connects to the others through color and pattern,” Janie says. “Nothing is stagnant.”

To maintain that visual movement, Elizabeth says she and Janie have a sort of formula for what works and what doesn’t.

“When using a lot of color and pattern—which we love to do— we mix scale, style, and texture as differentiators,” she says.

For instance, small block prints contrast larger botanicals, texture mixes with pattern, stripes and geometrics play off of florals, and palette-cleansing solids provide a resting spot. “We love incorporating multiple colors but always use at least one tone to create a thoughtful transition between spaces,” Janie says. “Our goal is for every space to feel special on its own but collectively come together like a piece of art forming one cohesive, beautiful home.”

OPPOSITE: “We often mix hard lines with softer counterparts,” says Elizabeth. “It’s part of the dichotomy of the feminine and the modern that we love to combine.” Loop counter stools from Villa & House are covered in broad blue-and-white stripes from Perennials to tie into the custom finish on Visual Comfort lanterns. BELOW: Inspired by Palm Beach, the breakfast room offers some practical but beautiful provisions. Chairs are laminated in a Sister Parish print, and an indoor/outdoor fabric protects the banquette. “We did not sacrifice beauty for functionality, but we made some smart decisions for livability in heavy traffic areas,” Janie says.

BAAREN Portland, OR In Portland, Oregon, Zoe van Baaren created a series of “secret garden” rooms along both sides of an 84-step historic, public staircase that bisects her property.

Framed in boxwood and hornbeam and connected with more steps, the terraced garden rooms include a rose garden around a firepit; a silver garden with an arched bench; and a white-themed gravel garden with a seating area, potted plants, and perennial borders. “I saw all these opportunities to create new little worlds,” she says. Step by step and garden room by garden room, Zoe has developed a bold, maximalist style that’s grown into a flourishing landscape design business she named Garden Riot.

How this gardener takes it to the MAX: Exuberant container plantings and iron arches. “Think of them as your cocktail rings to add a little bling to the corners,” says Zoe.

San Francisco, CA Beneath the towering skyscrapers of San Francisco’s SoMa district, down an alley and behind a Victorian apartment, Clarke de Mornay tends a wonderland of 300 potted plants on his apartment’s 700-square-foot brick patio. “I love maximalist design where you’re packing a bunch of things in and creating a really jungly look,” says Clarke, a horticulturist who designs gardens and has been marketing plants for 20 years at Flora Grubb Gardens, a destination garden store in San Francisco. “It’s funny that my garden gets all this attention. It’s never what I would design for a client. It’s my own collection of plants that I hauled for 30 years.”

How this gardener takes it to the MAX: Clarke says containers are a great way to try new plants, especially ones that need a little more attention. He embraces an earth-toned container theme as a unifying thread within the extensive mix of plants.

While many know Sharon Pryse as a successful business owner and past University of Tennessee trustee, her maximalist bio also includes avid gardener and garden preservationist. For more than 40 years, she worked with a cast of talented designers and contractors to diligently restore the tiered gardens around her century-old Georgian home overlooking the Tennessee River. “It’s just as much a part of my identity,” says Sharon, who travels globally to garden destinations, serves as vice chair of the national Garden Conservancy’s board, and enjoys evenings in her own garden. “Sitting on the bluestone patio, looking over at dusk into the rose garden with the lights just turning on, it’s so beautiful and peaceful.”
