As a Black woman living in the Pacific Northwest, I've navigated the unsettling waves of racism, each incident leaving an imprint on my mental health. From being followed around in stores, targeted with racial slurs, to having strangers lay their hands on my hair without consent, I've known the uneasy touch of racism in its many forms. Every incident has left me grappling with feelings of anger, fear, and isolation.

Yet, I am acutely aware that my experiences are not singular. In fact, Black individuals in the Pacific Northwest disproportionately grapple with mental health issues. A troubling statistic by the National Alliance on Mental Illness reveals that Black adults in this region are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts compared to their white counterparts.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: Dial 1-800-273-TALK (8255). This lifeline provides 24/7, free, and confidential support for people in distress, along with prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones.

The Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741. It's a free, 24/7 support for those in crisis. Text from anywhere in the U.S. to text with a trained crisis counselor.

In these challenging times, let's remind ourselves that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. There is help available, and there's no shame in reaching out. As we continue our journey, let's remember to extend empathy, understanding, and support to each other. Together, we can strive towards a future that truly sees us, hears us, and values us.

What lies beneath this grim disparity? The roots are tangled in the region's history of racial discrimination spanning housing, employment, and education. Generations of Black people have faced systemic racism, resulting in a legacy of trauma and stress that often culminates in mental health problems.

Compounding this issue is the lack of access to mental health care. Black individuals are statistically less likely to possess health insurance and are more likely to reside in rural areas with limited mental health providers. This dark reality compounds the difficulty for Black individuals to receive the necessary mental health care.

The intersectionality of race and mental health is a complex issue. Yet, it's an issue that we cannot afford to ignore. There's an urgent need to educate ourselves and others about the impact of racism on mental health and ensure that Black individuals have equitable access to quality mental health care.

To my fellow Black individuals in the Pacific Northwest struggling with mental health, please know that you are not alone. There are resources available to you. However, a new digital knight in shining armor — artificial intelligence (AI) — is promising to revolutionize ADHD management. AI, with its capacity to automate tasks, offer personalized assistance, and make future predictions, brings immense potential for individuals with ADHD. How AI Can Help Adults with ADHD There are many ways that AI can help adults with ADHD. Here are a few examples: Personalized Assistance AI can act as a personalized assistant in various ways: 1. Creating To-Do Lists and Setting Reminders: AIpowered tools can help individuals with ADHD stay organized by creating to-do lists and setting reminders.

They can even prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance. They can also provide reminders for routines and habits that an individual wants to develop, like taking medication or regular exercise.

2. Breaking Down Tasks: Often, people with ADHD can be overwhelmed by large tasks. AI can help by breaking these down into smaller, more manageable steps. The AI can present these steps one at a time to help the individual focus and reduce overwhelm.

3. Learning and Adaptation: Through machine learning algorithms, AI can learn and adapt to an individual's behavior, making suggestions and reminders more personalized and effective over time. This could involve learning the best times of day to schedule tasks or understanding which types of tasks are more difficult for the individual.

They connect us to the past and shape our understanding of the world. This is especially true for those of us hailing from indigenous cultures, where these rich traditions are an integral part of our identity, deeply woven into the fabric of our lives.

Growing up as an indigenous person, I was cradled in the embrace of these oral traditions. The stories that have passed down from generation to generation, like precious heirlooms, have not just been a source of fascination, but have also provided valuable lessons about our history, our values, and our profound relationship with nature. These narratives, filled with tales of animals, spirits, and the creation of the world, served as my earliest compass, helping me navigate the complexities of life.

The Pacific Northwest, a region as diverse as it is beautiful, is home to a plethora of indigenous cultures, each resplendent with its unique lore and storytelling traditions. Among the most celebrated are the stories of the Coast Salish people, known for their rich oral tradition. The Lummi, the Nez Perce, the Chinook, and countless others contribute to the symphony of indigenous voices echoing through the verdant forests and along the rugged coastlines.

These stories are more than just our entertainment or bedtime tales. They are lifelines that tether us to our ancestors, offering us guidance through their wisdom and connecting us to the land that has been an enduring part of our identity. They are bridges that span the divide between the past and the present, grounding us in our heritage while inspiring us to envision our future.

In recent years, the global tapestry has begun to recognize the value of these vibrant threads. This resurgence of interest in indigenous storytelling is a testament to the tireless efforts of indigenous authors who have bravely shared their narratives and the growing appreciation of the significance of indigenous cultures in the wider world.

In the face of the challenges of the 21st century, I firmly believe that our folklore and storytelling remain essential to preserving our cultural identity. They offer us not just a sense of community and continuity but also a unique lens to view and make sense of the world. Our stories are our legacy, bequeathed to us by our ancestors, and it is our duty to safeguard them for generations yet to come.

Embarking on this journey of understanding, here are some tales that illuminate the rich history of the Pacific Northwest: Chief Seattle's Speech: In 1854, Chief Seattle, a leader of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes, gave a speech to the United States government in which he expressed his love for his land and his people. He also warned the government that if they did not respect the land and its people, they would be met with disaster.

The Makah People: The Makah people lived on the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest for

thousands of years. They are known for their whaling traditions, which have been passed down from generation to generation. The Makah believe that whales are sacred creatures, and they only hunt them when necessary.

The Nez Perce People: The Nez Perce people are a Native tribe who lived in the Pacific Northwest in the 19th century. They were known for their peaceful nature and their strong sense of community. In 1877, the Nez Perce were forced to leave their homeland by the United States government. They fought a war to protect their land and way of life, but they were eventually defeated. 100 years after US soldiers drove them out, Nez Perce returned to bless their Oregon homeland.

These are just a few examples of the many stories that are told by indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest.

These stories are a treasure trove of wisdom, resilience, and hope. They remind us of our connection to the land and our responsibility to care for it. They also teach us about the importance of community, family, and love.

I encourage you to seek out indigenous authors and storytellers and to learn more about the rich heritage of the Pacific Northwest. These stories will enrich your understanding of the world and inspire you to live a more meaningful life.

On any given Saturday night, the gallery buzzes with artists, art lovers, and students, all united by their shared love for this distinctive art form. The atmosphere is electric, with wine flowing and a DJ spinning tunes, as they gather to celebrate the gallery's 25th year under the stewardship of Kirsten Anderson.

Anderson's passion for art that is "technically excellent" and "fantastical in some ways" has been the driving force behind the gallery's success. She has a particular fondness for art that straddles the line between magic realism and a darker bent, yet always maintains an element of beauty. This is not a place for the gruesome or macabre, but rather for art that might just have the power to disturb dreams.

Roq La Rue's journey began in the 90s, providing a platform for underground artists inspired by diverse influences such as comics and Tiki culture. Anderson recalls how the art was initially labeled as 'low brow', a term that some artists felt was derogatory given the immense effort they put into their work. In response, Anderson coined the term "pop surrealism", and literally wrote the book on the rise of underground art. This term has since gained respect and recognition in the mainstream art scene.

The gallery has been instrumental in launching the careers of many artists. Travis Louie, known for his imaginative world where creatures pose in Victorian outfits, had his first gallery exhibition at Roq La Rue in 2006. His art has since graced museums from Paris to Wyoming.

Seattle artist Kari-Lise Alexander, whose paintings beautifully blend flora with the female form, considers it a "huge privilege" to exhibit at Roq La Rue. Her work, such as "Break Through", which depicts flowers blooming from a woman's severed arm, leaves interpretation up to the viewer, adding to the allure and mystery.

Another rising star, Ben Ashton, paints mind-bending portraits of distressed aristocrats, adding a touch of humor to the gallery's collection. Anderson finds his work "quite funny", further illustrating the gallery's adventurous spirit.

Roq La Rue may not be for everyone, with its art that leans towards the darkness. But for the past 25 years, it has catered to clients with a certain taste, often inspiring first-time buyers to make a purchase. As Anderson puts it, "It's amazing to me how often somebody comes in and says I've never bought a painting before, but I have to have that."

The Transcendent Art of Philippe Shangti Interview & Article by Hassane Soumahoro We've all attended school and learned about the Renaissance, an epoch in art history that continues to shape humanity to this day.

Back when I was in class, my initial reaction was, "Ok, cool you can draw." However, after a conversation with Philippe Shangti, I now understand that it's not solely about the art; it's about the mindset.

The Renaissance, a centuries-old artistic period, transformed our thinking. The affluent invest in art not just for its monetary value, but also because it offers profound philosophical lessons.

By understanding the mindset behind the artwork, they acquire knowledge that aids in their personal success. The influence of the Renaissance endures, and it's thanks, in part, to the prodigious intellect of Philippe Shangti.

help convey the message, "The ingredients are crucial: I always inscribe a few words directly onto the model's skin to ensure a clear understanding of the message (ex: 'No Cocaine Here,' 'No Pollution Here'). The photography needs to be refined adhering to the standards of luxury. Then I aim to transmit emotion and sensuality.

It's all about the micro details; it's very subtle. When I manage to bring these ingredients together, that's when the magic happens."

The magic certainly has happened, as Shangti's work has been exhibited in some of the world's most exclusive galleries. He considers this a true honor, remarking, "It's just amazing, I never imagined this when it all started, especially given the highly exclusive nature of this field with its numerous pitfalls."

There's a fascination with uncovering the deeper meaning of art, due to the non-verbal dialogue between the viewer and the artist. The artist, in a sense, engages in a personal conversation with their work.

For Shangti, this dialogue began as an escape.

"Since I was young, I have always been different fr om others and struggled with expressing my feelings. Curiosity led me to the camera, a tool I found fascinating. The ability to capture and freeze a moment visually—that's remarkable, isn't it? When I arrived in St Tropez and discovered the sins of the Jetset, I decided to use my camera not to capture a slice of life but to convey a message."

Shangti produces some of the most sought-after art in the world, as evidenced by his recent sold-out show at Bel-Air Fine Art in Courchevel, France. "Collectors from all around the world came to meet me. The reception was extraordinary and full of surprises. The opening event lasted three non-stop hours; the gallery was filled with people, and some collectors even vied with one another to acquire certain works. It was quite a frenzy!"

This sentiment led him to conceive his acclaimed collection that symbolizes all seven deadly sins in a single work, represented by the character "Goddess of Seven." Shangti's fascination with the seven deadly sins seems to be part of his broader mission to provoke thought and critique societal issues.

Shangti's artistic style is not confined to photography alone. As a self-made artist with a curious and imaginative personality, he creates a variety of artworks including photographs, artistic concepts, and limited edition sculptures. His work is showcased in top art galleries in numerous countries, making a significant global impact.

Artists, regardless of whether they use a pen, a brush, their voice, or a lens, always incorporate a message and a history into their work. They share this message and history non-verbally. This is why successful art impacts the viewer emotionally. Shangti's artistic style, which he describes as "colorful, psychoanalytical, provocative, denunciation, prevention, an atypical messenger of modern times," engages viewers on an emotional level. His work is not meant merely to be seen but felt, aiming to reach a wide audience and impact people’s minds.

By making immorality attractive to see, he challenges the viewer's mindset, gently but deeply winning hearts and minds.

He also works on projects like "Future Is Now," which demonstrates his deep belief that people's behavior today irreversibly determines the world of tomorrow. This approach and philosophy make Shangti's work not just art, but a powerful social commentary and a prediction of the future.

Like any bold artist who challenges societal norms, Shangti's work has not been without its share of controversy. Shangti, however, views his art as a mirror held up to society, a provocative commentary on the world as he sees it. His aim is not to objectify, but to highlight and challenge the objectification inherent in societal norms and expectations. He challenges his viewers to look beyond the surface, to question what they see and to reconsider their own perceptions. Through my conversation with Philippe Shangti, I gained an enhanced understanding of the importance of art in society, the reasons why art matters, and what defines good art. His ethos, his mission to provoke thought and critique societal issues, and his pioneering way of combining beauty with critique all culminate into an extraordinary narrative. His art goes beyond the visual, and the messages are potent.
