A

s we near the end of any term, I am often reminded of the motivational words used by Denzel Washington during one of his many speeches delivered, that “ease is a greater threat to progress than hardship and adversity”. On a far smaller scale, we hope that the many successes and the enjoyment experienced by our pupils have not necessarily been met with the experience of ease.

In educational circles, leaders often refer to contextualising the experience of pupils with that of developing grit through characterbased educational experiences.

It is my hope that, somewhere, sometime, along their journeys this term, our pupils and teachers alike relied on their own depth of grit to overcome obstacles and enjoy the reward of success and progress. It is my hope that our sense of courage and personal resolve have been put to the test to ultimately find resolution.

This particular notion, though expressed somewhat differently, formed the foundation of our introduction to the year by the various therapists from In the Know who addressed parents and teachers, and later our pupils,

about ‘Coping with Challenges’.

We hope that this has equipped us a little more with regard to the varying and often complex challenges that we face as a community of parents, teachers and pupils.

Upon reflecting back on the term, it is tricky, to say the least, to try and fit every single wonderful event and experience into this article. On a sporting front, we enjoyed playing successful host, for the first time ever, to the Independent Prep Schools’ Cricket Festival. Our netball players and cricketers represented the school with aplomb at the Montrose Night Series, heartily supported most Friday evenings by parents and coaches. Our InterHouse Swimming Gala was incredibly well attended and a most memorable event indeed.

The fact that we entered A, B and C swimming teams into interschools’ galas most Fridays shows just how enthusiastic and alive swimming is in the Senior Prep! Our Softball girls have continued to represent us proudly, and various tennis events were also attended in numbers and showed significant progress. We also, somehow, managed to host the Prep Schools’ Golf Challenge

successfully this year, even though rain threatened to leave us damp and drowning.

On the academic front, we have continued to roll out relevant, 21st Century learning spaces throughout the Senior Prep so that core competencies such as collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking and problem solving are encouraged and become ingrained in our innovative offer. Thinking skills were driven through our orientation programme and our weekly ‘ROARwards’ and Principal’s Commendations have had a positive impact at our assemblies.

Academic staff have also enjoyed various opportunities geared towards professional development, including but not limited to the following: Thinking Maps, a coding summit, Thinking Skills South Africa’s course on developing writing skills (proudly hosted by Dainfern College), the First Additional Language Conference (also hosted by Dainfern College and our own Mrs Busi Dube, Head of isiZulu), the 21st Century Child Conference, De Bono’s Thinking Hats, Language Board

Training, Developing A Growth Mindset workshop, Today’s Child Conference, and many more. Our teachers are clearly keen to grasp and implement pedagogy in line with the needs of our pupils.

The reintroduction of tutor groups in the Senior Preparatory takes place next term and we look forward to further enhancing our offer in terms of establishing and nurturing positive relationships with our pupils. In their tutor groups, pupils will have opportunities to engage with their tutors in smaller groups around relevant, pressing topics.

Culturally, we thoroughly enjoyed our recent SP Talent Show where the audience was blown away by the most impressive acts. Our Choir enjoyed their beginning-ofyear workshop and are looking forward to their inaugural Choir Camp taking place next term.

Our various, expertly guided, ensembles continue to grow and develop most impressively.

Notably, our SP Violin ensemble enjoyed competing in the Quarter Finals of the National Eisteddfod Academy.

There is no doubt that this has been a busy but really productive term. Gratitude is certainly due

to all parents who so positively engage with us on a continual basis and for all the time and effort you have poured into your children’s lives. Our thanks too, to an incredible staff of Senior Prep teachers who continually tend to go the extra mile in such a passionate, committed way in all that they do. and, naturally, also to our pupils for grabbing every opportunity available.

Our College theme rings true when we look at our pupils, teachers and parents: it is in the seizing of present opportunities that we positively create and enhance future possibilities.

Celebrating...

Our staff already have several reasons to celebrate this year!

Mrs Lauren van Schalkwyk achieved another Midmar Mile-stone this year when she completed her 11th race. Evidently no slouch on the sporting front, she, together with Miss Marijke Malan, Ms Ashleigh Kromm and Mrs Henriëtte Botha [1], also achieved their Level 1 Netball Coaching qualifications after attending a three-day course in Pretoria. Well done, Mr Nick Watson [2] has been accepted for the Master in Coaching diploma programme at the Cruyff Institute in Amsterdam. This sports coaching programme comprises seven months’ mainly distance learning, with three intensive on-campus weeks. The focus of the course is on self-knowledge and self-development, giving students insight into their strengths as a coach and those of their athletes so as to improve performance.

Students develop their own unique coaching style and learn how to put this into practice. ladies!

Mrs Vicky Carver celebrated the engagement of her only daughter Lauryn to Craig Findlay in December 2017 - the happy couple will be getting married in September this year. The Carvers also welcomed their first granchild in October last year when Hannah Grace Carver was born in London. The stork will also be visiting Mr Marc Abbott’s home in August this year, when a new little addition is due to make his or her appearance!

This term we celebrated Environmental Civvies Day. In a reversal of roles our teachers came to school dressed in uniform, much to the amusement of our pupils!

Our 20-year book This term we launched our commemorative book “The Dainfern College Story� to celebrate the first 20 years of Dainfern College. Every family and staff member was given a complimentary copy as a memento of the journey we have walked together. Getting to know you...

Meet Lindy Roberts - our new Grade 4 teacher I grew up in the small town of Dalton in KZN. I attended New Hanover Preparatory School and my high school years were spent at Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg and Wartburg Kirchdorf School, all three of these being small German schools situated in farming communities. I thoroughly enjoyed my school years and participated in all the sport offered as well as piano lessons on the cultural side. I obtained my degree in Human Movement Sciences and did my PGCE at the University of Pretoria.

I met my wonderful husband at church. Wesley was pursuing a rugby career in Australia at that time and is now a strength and conditioning coach who specialises in resistance bands.

He is also a rugby coach and has thoroughly enjoyed opportunities such as coaching the Craven Week side. We have been blessed with an adorable son, Luke, who is almost two and who attends Junior College Gardens.

My favourite thing to do is spend time with the two men in my life.

We like to go away as often as we can, especially to the coast.

Before becoming parents, Wesley and I were avid Crossfitters, spending a lot of our time training and competing together.

I started my teaching career at Bryanston Primary School.

Thereafter I moved to a small private school called Cairncross College.

It is such a privilege to be on the staff at this amazing school, Dainfern College. From the very minute I arrived, I was made to

feel welcome by my colleagues and precious pupils. I look forward to continued growth as a person and teacher. I strive to make my classroom a place where pupils love to learn and leave the classroom enriched, being able to take on the challenges of the real world.

Meet Belinda Strydom - our new SP Art teacher then, once my children were born, I went back to teaching. I still do freelance design work and I love the technical drawing aspect of draughting. Two nights a week I also do paint nights at a local Mexican restaurant, which is a fantastic way of spreading the love of art. Two years ago my kids and I bought a 1958 Morris Minor 1000 which we love driving. It is really such a happy little car. His name is Morris.

I studied teaching at Stellenbosch and then went to live overseas for three years: a year in Atlanta, Georgia in USA and then PingTung, Taiwan. I even bought a 400cc superbike much to my dad’s shock. I returned to South Africa in 2005 and studied my second love: interior architecture.

I do have an incredible love for art and design and what better way to combine these than with teaching?!

I have two monkeybeans, who

luckily love art and being creative.

My daughter is nine years old

(possible going on 16) and her name is Teagan May. My son is seven and his name is Matthew he eats like he is 16. I am a single mom and rocking it, but I must confess that when they are with their dad I do just eat cereal. I live in Greymont, near Cresta, and I have three dogs: one sausage dog named Worsie that loves watching TV, and two fluff balls called JoJo and Max.

My goal is to hopefully inspire as many of my pupils as possible to love art and see the many careers that you could go into one day.

These are such exciting times.

I am so looking forward to growing further in this awesome Dainfern College family.

Academic overview Louise Browne Deputy Principal: Academics

T

he first term of 2018 has seen the continuation of our Thinking Skills Programme in the Senior Preparatory.

Many teachers are involved in the Thinking Skills Drive Team led by Mrs Kerryn White. The team meets on a regular basis to develop new strategies for implementing critical thinking in the Senior Preparatory. Many new initiatives have arisen from this Drive Team.

We continue to encourage the love of reading, having celebrated World Read Aloud Day on 1 February. A variety of reading activities took place on the day, with Mr Quinn starting our line-up with a special reading, that the pupils thoroughly enjoyed. The Grade 6s had an enjoyable day of hot chocolate and reading the book ‘Wonder’.

In Grade 5, we also celebrated Flashlight Friday, which saw pupils reading their book ‘The White Giraffe’ with their torches every Friday.

ROARING AHEAD! The Dainfern College Senior Prep has spent the last year building an explicit ‘Culture of Thinking’ using our Core Skills Language Board. We began this initiative by having a look at the 21st Century skills that pupils need to develop in order to succeed in the ‘Information Age’.

We came up with six core skills that we believed to be most important for our pupils: 1. Exploration: This skill encompasses everything regarding a search for knowledge.

It involves research, investigation, experimentation etc.

2. Communication: This skill focuses on developing your child’s ability to articulate their thoughts and ideas effectively, using oral, written and non-verbal communication skills.

3. Social Integration: This demonstrates an ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse groups.

Our themes, lessons and rich tasks are based on developing these core skills. Our school mascot, Roary, is also involved in driving our mission to develop these important skills. When the children display these skills, they are rewarded with a House ‘ROARward’. These ROARwards have a lottery ticket that is placed in a weekly draw in assembly.

This has generated a great deal of enthusiasm amongst our various Houses.

At the end of each term, a big ROARward draw takes place in which a lucky winner will win a mini ‘Roary’ mascot. Mr Quinn will also acknowledge children with Principal’s Awards based on these skills in our weekly assemblies.

We have embarked on whole Prep School activities that have involved the children working together (Social Integration), exploring different approaches and ideas (Exploration), thinking about workable strategies (Metacognition); communicating effectively (Communication); exercising self-discipline and respect (Self-Awareness) and reflecting on the success or failure of their end result (Reflection). It has been so rewarding for us, as teachers, to witness how these skills resonate so prominently through the pupils’ behaviour and thought processes. We look forward to sharing our journey with you.

4. Metacognition: Simply put, metacognition is ‘thinking about thinking’, which is an awareness of the approach one takes to solving a problem or tackling a task.

5. Self-Awareness: This skill encompasses our school’s core value system, FISHAR, which aims at developing Fortitude, Integrity, Self-discipline, Humanity, Accountability and Respect.

6. Reflection: This involves children examining and interpreting learning experiences to gain new understanding.

Coping with challenges JUST SIT WITH IT

I

n January 2018, In The Know Training presented a short talk on helping our children cope with life’s challenges. The 21st Century is full of stresses and children often experience negative feelings about their world. We as parents often escalate these feelings through our reactions.

Our children then believe they can’t cope or the situation is too big to handle. Parents often rush in to fix, reassure and assist their child in avoiding something they perceive as difficult. Parents often unknowingly, lovingly and intuitively, may make things worse.

In the Know Training introduced us to a shift in our thinking.

They suggested that challenges are normal and they should be expected to turn up. Challenges can cause negative feelings and these are an important part of the human experience. Parents should help their children to sit with their negative feelings in order to work through them.

BUT… parents need to practise sitting with and tolerating their OWN negative feelings first!

A very useful tool that was presented was the notion of “Raising a Problem Solver”.

Children can be taught to think their way out of a problem even when their parents are not around.

They suggested adults follow three easy steps when teaching children to solve problems:

1. STOP:

Calm your child down and take a minute. An overwhelmed and emotional child will struggle to think.

efficacy by allowing them to make decisions and try. ITK suggested that, “Confidence come from Competence”. This takes practice for both parents and children.

Finally we were encouraged to rethink what we praise.

Children should be praised for doing things that are hard and not for those that are easy. Success is not a straight line: we need to emphasise courage, persistence and doing difficult things rather than doing a good job, winning or gaining the desired result.

ITK encouraged parents to take courage, be patient and practise these skills with their children.

2. THINK: Discuss many options with your child. Children often come up with wonderful ideas when we allow them to.

In The Know Training (ITK) stated that when we take difficult experiences away from children, they don’t gain the necessary skills to deal with life’s challenges.

ITK informed us that it is essential that parents and adults model calm to our children.

When a difficulty arises: DON’T PANIC. Adults set the emotional temperature around situations and children often look to parents’ reactions in deciding how they are going to react to a situation.

3. CHOOSE: Allow your child to follow through on a choice. Help your child choose a different option if the first was unsuccessful.

Round Square Round Square Day The purpose of Round Square day was to give everyone an opportunity to experience what Round Square stands for. The IDEALS of Round Square are Internationalism, Democracy.

Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service. While Dainfern College already promotes most of these IDEALS in our BluPrints and our FISHAR core value system, events like this encourage our pupils to take these IDEALS and make them part of their everyday living.

The Grade 4s did a Service project, cleaning and packing stationery bags for outreach.

Gisele de Abreu said “I felt good about helping people who needed the stationery to be able to learn.”

In Grade 5 the pupils explored Internationalism and researched a Round Square School in another country and designed a poster.

Mikayla Ernst said “It was very interesting to learn about how a school in India is so different to our school, especially their sport.

It was a lot of fun exploring and learning new things about another school.”

The Grade 6s researched Leadership, looking at leaders of the world. Zia Khader commented “I actually think it was a really fun and more advanced way of learning. I think it is great that the school prepares us to lead responsibly and prepare us for the future.”

The Grade 7s experienced Adventure, where they only had ‘a minute to win it’.

What an amazing time we all had!

Young Round Square Conference at Bridge House School, Franschhoek

Twelve of our Grade 6 and 7 pupils recently attended the Young Round Square Conference in Franschoek, where they got to meet over 120 children from schools in Southern Africa. The programme followed the theme “Wonder” and was packed with amazing guest speakers, outreach service projects, learning about sustainable farming, beading, adventure activities, open mic night and a fun social event.

Pupils were encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and be curious during their Baraza group activities.

Erin Tomlinson said,”The Round Square conference was the highlight of my year so far, from the people, the location, to the experience. It was all planned so well and everyone was so welcoming and friendly. I would definitely do it again.”

The teachers also had time to share ideas and experiences.

New friendships were made as the teachers debated many Round Square topics.

We are very excited to confirm that Dainfern College will host the 2019 Young Round Square Conference.

eflecting back on the first term of 2018, I realise that this has been a term of many firsts for the Music department. We have a brand new Senior Prep band and keyboard ensemble, both of which have already had the opportunity to perform and show what they have achieved thus far in a music assembly. We also started a SP music theory group which accommodates all SP instrumentalists.

The SP Violin Ensemble were also honoured by Professor Robinson from the North West University for their dedication and commitment to excellence. They all received medals and certificates.

Our 60-hour Golden Hour Practice Challenge was launched with huge excitement and this certainly has encouraged our musicians to log their practice hours and grow as young musicians.

We are very proud of our three Senior Prep pupils who made it through to the quarter-final round of the NEA Young Performers

Talent on show A cultural highlight this term was certainly our SP Talent Show. We were all blown away by the variety and quality of all the acts. Our Grade 7 presenters were professional and our performers were highly entertaining.

Swimathon 2018: Raising awareness of PLASTIC POLLUTION

O

ur annual Swimathon

fundraiser was given an environmental twist this year when the Dainfern College Foundation and Student Head of Environmental Affairs, Stella Rutsito [1], got together and decided to do something bold to bring to our pupils’’ attention the damage created by our consumption of plastic. They were supported in this by our Round Square organisation.

Environmentalism is one of the key IDEALS of Round Square [2], so Mrs Sonia Claassen, Head of Round Square at Dainfern College, was very happy to support this initiative.

The annual Swimathon, a tradition driven by the Dainfern College Parents’ Association for many years, involves our Prep School pupils swimming lengths to raise funds for Dainfern College and its outreach initiatives. The school’s Foundation, which promotes student social engagement, saw this as a perfect opportunity to put experiential education in motion.

Once the Grade 2s and 3s had completed their Swimathon laps, the High School students polluted the pool with plastic bottles so that the Senior Prep pupils could experience the destructive nature of plastic and how it affects

one’s ability in the water, thus showcasing the ongoing aquatic crisis affecting our planet [3].

The Grade 8 students then set an excellent example to the younger pupils by removing all bottles from the pool after the event [4], until the pool was restored to its usual pristine state [5].

“What started out as an awareness campaign for the pupils,then went viral on Facebook, as environmentalism is such a topical subject,” says Mrs Tracey Blyth, our Foundation Manager.

The Foundation post about the event was made on Wednesday 7 March, and has since been shared by over 4500 people and reached over half a million people globally. Encouraging comments from all around the world have been received in support of the school, many asserting that other schools should do the same in order to increase awareness at school level.

Sporting update Tessa Shellard Deputy Principal: Sport & Extramurals

I

write this synopsis with both pride and humility, reflecting on that which we have collectively achieved in a mere three months. What an incredible year it has been thus far: we indeed have much to celebrate!

The following are only a few of the many highlights of the past term.

We would like to commend all our players for their commitment and the exemplary manner in which they partook in extramurals this term.

A sincere thanks to our amazingly supportive parents for the integral part they play in our children’s successes. Finally, to our staff and coaches: your time, efforts and positive contribution are invaluable; we can never thank you sufficiently.

ISASA Cricket Festival Together with Beaulieu Prep, we co-hosted a simply phenomenal ISASA Cricket Festival from 15 February to 18 February where we received numerous compliments. Players, coaches and spectators were treated to the magic of our Marimba Band as they performed for the opening match, prior to the teams taking the field. Highlights of this festival, among many others, included Nick Ford scoring a magnificent 148 runs and Joshua Watson taking five wickets for 13 runs against St John’s Harare.

Montrose Night Series Our U11 and Open Netball teams as well as our Open Cricket team participated in the Montrose Night Series Challenge this term. The Netball players pulled out all the stops week after week, while our cricketers seemed invincible.

The U11 Netball team finished in a respectable seventh position overall in the Series and our Open team 10th.

Luke Carter put up an absolutely brilliant batting performance against Beaulieu Prep, scoring 165 runs and Nick Delport took five wickets for five runs against Bryneven. The Cricket season culminated with our Open As playing in the Montrose Semis where they unfortunately lost to Grayston who outplayed us on the night.

Throughout the series, a number of our Netball and Cricket players were identified as ‘Players of the match’. At the final prizegiving, the following players were identified for top performances throughout the series:

Sports wrap Golf

Equestrian

Our avid golfers played a number of courses in preparation for our Prep School Golf Challenge, hosted on 8 March at Dainfern Country Club. The Challenge was played in extremely challenging conditions, beginning and ending in heavy downpours, but it was nevertheless, hugely successful. We had a total of nine players participating in the largest field ever - 77 Prep School golfers from all over Gauteng. Our golfers did us proud with Matthew Leonard and Kyle Farndell finishing first out of the Dainfern College players, scoring 92 in the Competitive section and 112 in the Non-Handicapped section, respectively.

Our Equestrian Prep Team achieved exceptionally good results in the Quarter-final Champs, with both Kylie van der Westhuizen and Kelly du Plessis winning first places in their respective competitions.

Tennis Our Tennis teams, particularly our Boys’ team, proved to be hugely competitive, achieving fine results against some tough opposition. They too ended the season on a high, by participating in an external tournament hosted at Dainfern College.

Softball

Swimming galas Our swimming teams competed every Friday, with all three teams finishing in the top two positions each week. Our little C-Team swam wholeheartedly, taking on the various schools’ A and B teams with gutsy determination.

Congratulations to the A-Team, competing against nine other schools throughout the season and winning every one of their galas!

Although our Softball players had little game time due to the inclement weather, both our Junior and Senior teams managed to pull off a profound victory against Saheti in their league fixture, a win which hasn’t occurred in the last five years. Both teams participated most enthusiastically in a Saturday Festival which was a perfect way to end the season.

InterHouse results InterHouse Gala 2018 began with the hosting of our annual InterHouse Gala on 25 January where Christie Piguet broke two records and Reily Elliot, an exceptional five! The overall Gala experience was quoted as being the “best ever�, with excellent swimmer participation and performances, magnificent House camaraderie and cheering, meticulous organisation and wonderful parent support.

Netball & Soccer Most of our Senior Prep pupils participated in the InterHouse Netball and Soccer on 20 March. Congratulations to Kraken who won both the Netball and Soccer, followed by Phoenix and then Griffin.

Cross Country InterHouse Cross Country took place on Friday 6 April. A profusion of energy and vibe invaded the oval as approximately 700 pupils participated in this event. High fives to every little person for getting out there and giving of their best.

News of our alumni Catching up with Melanie Lesch Class of 2016

I am a second year medical student at the University of Witwatersrand. It is no secret that Wits offers one of, if not the most challenging of the MBBCh courses in the country and competes with international universities thanks to its high academic calibre.

The biggest reason behind my ability to thrive in such a diverse and competitive environment is Dainfern College and the incredible environment its staff create. Dainfern College pushed my limits physically and mentally by exposing me to academic, cultural and sporting excellence (in all of which I had the opportunity to participate), while having a concrete support structure inside and out of the classroom. I am still in touch with many of my teachers and will always be thankful for their guidance. I have the greatest respect for their wisdom, both academic and otherwise.

University requires students to lead a multi-faceted life. I have an 8-to-5 academic schedule every day, hold leadership

positions in three university clubs - Running, Religious and the student committee for MSF (Doctors without Borders) - while also maintaining a rigorous crossfit programme and the most wonderful friendships. The only way I have managed to enjoy my young adult life to the fullest and still maintain a distinction academic average is because of the five years I spent at Dainfern College.

I was taught that I have immeasurable potential and strength beyond my imagination.

I owe a lot to Dainfern College: it pushed me to make a positive change in the world and to follow my passions.

Dainfern College: you will always hold a huge place in my heart.

Celebrating with Khwezi Ndlovu Head Boy of the Class of 2017 Our Head Boy from 2017, Khwezi Ndlovu, was accepted into the highly prestigious Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship Programme at the beginning of this year. The Fellowship is awarded to prospective university students studying in South Africa who wish to make a big impact in the country and involves a very competitive application process. Khwezi will be studying Accounting at Stellenbosch University where he will also be continuing his athletics training.

He was thrilled to learn that he had been awarded the Fellowship and joins our 2016 Head Boy, Nicholas van der Meulen, on the Programme.
