Embrace this step with enthusiasm, as it creates the energy that sets the stage for your successful journey, providing a clear direction. For instance, if your goal is to enhance your physical well-being, consider specific questions like, "What forms of exercise bring me joy?" or "How can I adjust my diet to better nourish my body?"

Moving into the second quarter, for these next ninety days you’re in a refining process. Treat this time period as the rehearsal before a big performance. Practice extensively, try different approaches, and be open to adjustments. Consider concrete actions—like creating a weekly workout schedule, experimenting with various healthy recipes, or exploring new learning methods—if your goal involves acquiring new skills.

The third quarter emphasizes collaboration and feedback. Engage with friends, family, colleagues and professionals—depending on what your goal requires. For instance, if you're aspiring to start a business, gather insights from potential customers or consider forming a small master-mind group. If health is the focus, consult with a nutritionist or join a fitness community for additional support and guidance.

In the final quarter, it's time to step into the spotlight and embody your aspirations. Act with confidence, dress the part, and genuinely become the person capable of achieving your big goal. Visualize success vividly, incorporating intricate details. Imagine a perfect day when you've already achieved your dreams. For example, if your goal is career-oriented, visualize yourself confidently presenting a project or receiving accolades for your accomplishments.

As you determine your goal and plan for this year, clarity is essential. Define your goals precisely. Be specific.

Break down your big goal into four quarters— and smaller parts from there—celebrating achievements after each ninety-day segment. This makes the journey less challenging and more enjoyable. Treat each phase as a lesson, an opportunity for growth, and a chance to increase your confidence.

This structured approach transforms the complexities of your aspirations into a manageable and achievable journey. Welcome to The Year of Excellence.

It's the season of vision boards, new year’s resolutions, audacious goals and big plans. With each new calendar year, it's human nature to wash away the old and welcome the new. We reflect on all the tasks we left undone, the projects that never reached completion and the goals we forgot to accomplish. While that's normal and necessary, I believe the new year brings another chance to begin again without worry over what was. It’s time to focus on what can and will be.

Instead of making a laundry list of goals and resolutions we may forget by Valentine’s Day, consider giving your year a theme—just one simple word—to guide your thoughts and actions.

For us at Flourish Digital Magazine—and for me personally—our theme for 2024 is Excellence.

Excellence means “being distinctly good”—in thought and in action. That's our goal for the year: to be excellent in every way imaginable, in every way possible.

It was here that she first found her voice, paving the way for the creation of xoNecole.com, a platform celebrating and empowering women of color. This journey of digital influence was not merely about garnering clicks but a precursor to Necole's overarching mission: to uplift and advocate for women, especially those whose voices were often drowned out in silence.

Recovery through Entrepreneurship In 2017, Necole took a significant step forward by transcending the digital realm with the sale of xoNecole.com to Hollywood producer Will Packer. This transition marked not just a shift in her career but a poignant recovery—demonstrating that even in letting go, there is room for new beginnings. The theme of recovery echoes across Necole's life—a thread that weaves through her personal losses and the generational health struggles in her family.

My Happy Flo: A Holistic Revolution The genesis of My Happy Flo is a story of personal transformation and societal responsibility. My Happy Flo’s Holistic Vision As we look into the story of My Happy Flo we see that it’s more than just a product; it's Necole’s vision grounded in holistic wellness and community empowerment. She saw that Black women are often ignored by the healthcare industry. Women, especially women of color, more often than not are carelessly prescribed medications without proper diagnoses. This troubling fact gave Necole a sense of urgency to do something about it.

Through outreach and surveys, Necole discovered a disheartening truth: Black women are often overlooked, their health concerns brushed aside. This revelation became the catalyst for My Happy Flo. She designed a holistic product to seamlessly integrate into women's daily lives, which supplements the vitamins and nutrients commonly missing in order to foster hormonal balance.

She provided a solution to address a pressing need that had long been ignored.

The Silent Epidemic: Hormonal Imbalance Necole Kane understands the magnitude of this silent epidemic afflicting women, particularly Black women.

With the majority of women living with hormonal imbalances, if left unaddressed, their conditions can easily escalate into more severe complications such as fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, thyroid disorders—and even breast cancer and estrogen-induced cancers. Black women, in particular, face a heightened risk—being two to three times more likely to be diagnosed with fibroids and experiencing more severe menstrual symptoms.

For decades, the options presented to address these symptoms were limited to birth control pills and painkillers—which often come with their own long-term side effects and health risks. Necole recognized the urgent need for a dialogue that goes beyond traditional solutions to explore holistic remedies. Thus, My Happy Flo became a platform for Black women’s empowerment. Women are encouraged to take charge of their wellness and become their own best health advocates. >

My Happy Flo's Holistic Vision Necole Kane's personal journey is woven into the fabric of My Happy Flo. By the age of thirty-five, she had endured the loss of both her parents and of multiple women in her family. She saw these losses as due, in part, to a lack of knowledge around nutrition and lifestyle. This realization prompted her to embark on a profound journey of self-discovery, examining her own health and habits to prevent the same fate that had befallen her family.

Her dedication to addressing the generational cycle of early deaths caused by preventable illnesses is not just a mission statement; it's Necole’s deeply personal quest that fuels the My Happy Flo initiative. Her approach to wellness advocacy is informed by her own experiences, making her not just a leader but a compassionate guide who navigates the intricate terrain of women's health.

How do you get a girl to dream bigger? Do you expose her to the world by sending her on global travel experiences? Do you send her to personal and professional development workshops? What about exposing her to financial literacy? Yes, it is all the above.

My name is Xara Kemp, and I am the founder and Jr. Executive of the non-profit organization Boss Girl Inc. Our mission: Turn a girl into a boss through a sisterhood that inspires all girls to dream bigger and use their voice as their power to create economic change for all women and girls.

I started Boss Girl Inc. at the age of eleven after I watched a documentary on Forbes 600 billionaires in the United States on television. I saw that the list contained predominantly White male billionaires. So, I asked myself, "Where are the female billionaires?" I went to ask my mom, and she answered, "Well, that's just the way it is.

Women—especially Black women—are still not afforded the same opportunities, and definitely not at the same earnings, as white men." At that moment, it felt wrong, wrong, wrong.

As of this writing, there are 735 billionaires in the United States (according to Forbes) and only two are Black women (Oprah Winfrey and Rihanna). Why and how do we continue economic change for women and girls? As a Black female, I am disheartened that the odds for me to become a billionaire are this slim. Yet, as a Black woman holding on to big dreams, I am inclined to become a part of the change. And to bring as many girls as I can along with me. >

Boss Girl Inc. is a sisterhood of girls who are empowered to be whoever they want to be, at the greatest level. We work together to encourage other girls by providing the tools and resources for them to feel confident about becoming a billionaire. And it is not just about becoming a billionaire.

It’s more about the impact a billionaire can have upon our economic system: A billionaire’s voice is bigger; her actions reach more people; her dollars stretch further.

There is a huge economic disparity gap between men and women. The change starts with you. More girls need to learn more about themselves and their abilities—develop confidence in their opinions and in their voice, and be exposed to as much of the world as possible. Only six percent of women travel globally. Teaching girls how to use their voice as their power is a critical part of being a successful businesswoman who can create impact.

In my book A Boss in the Making I wrote about the vital importance of having a voice. Having a voice means having the power to connect to others through their hearts and then their minds. When you have a voice, you use words.

And words are powerful. Using your voice as your power is important because it is like a sword that sharpens your tongue to influence, impact, empower, inspire, and provide authentic self-expression.

Boss Girl Inc. is now a movement—led by all women and girls who are prepared to create impact. Wouldn’t it be amazing to live in a world where girls globally can dream bigger and be safe to express their voice loudly?

FOCUS ON WELLNESS Enjoy the spa, wellness activities and fresh food. My favorite place in the spa was the treehouse. I took a body scrub–making class there and apparently excelled. It was so easy, and something you can use in your suite (every room there feels like a suite)—or take it home with you to remember your trip.

When it came time for my spa treatment, I noticed that the spa suite was designed with the comfort of guests in mind.

It looked and felt newly decorated. The textiles were extremely high quality. You will want to get onto the massage table quickly, since it feels more like a bed fit for a queen. And don’t we love it when a spa uses quality skincare products that produce wonderful results? Make a plan to stay for awhile, even if just to perch in the treehouse to get an idyllic view of the ocean waves and the swaying trees. Grab some treats from the lounge and relax there for some perfect “me time.”

FITNESS OPTIONS We all want the option to work on our fitness when on vacation, but how many days you actually do here is up to you. No guilt tripping here. Zoëtry wants you to relax by the pool, chill at the spa or get fit on your own schedule. There is a daily activity calendar that includes yoga and other opportunities to keep you moving—at times convenient for you.

FOODIE HAVEN Nothing gets fresher than seafood when you are located at a marina. You will not be able to get enough of the remarkable sushi by the pool. And one of the best parts of the resort is the head chef: He is truly amazing— keeping his eye on the guests with a hand in everything going on at all the restaurants onsite. During my visit, his staff was always caring, ensuring that every person had what they wanted to make their meal and their whole stay perfect. The food was a standout at every meal.

So make sure to plan for more time than expected for your mud bath.

In our relentless pursuit, we often find ourselves chasing time, yearning for more moments to grasp, yet paradoxically struggling to manage the precious little we possess.

The perpetual ebb and flow of time mirrors the fleeting nature of our personal journey. Each passing second is an irreversible step forward, an irreversible loss in the grand tapestry of existence.

Yet, in its evanescence, time holds the power of eternity. Memories, experiences, and the imprint of our presence linger in its wake, creating a timeless legacy.

In our pursuit of a balanced lifestyle—when we’re focused on productivity and achievement—we often find ourselves ensnared in the relentless pursuit of more time. The modern world, with its relentless pace, has elevated time to a coveted commodity. We crave more of it while simultaneously being inundated by an avalanche of commitments and obligations.

It's about embracing the qualities that make each woman uniquely herself—whether it’s a tendency to nurture, a love for aesthetics, or an intuitively creative approach to problem-solving. As women, we sometimes battle with these qualities in male-driven settings—overanalyzing, thinking we may be perceived as weak. However, these qualities don't diminish our strength; they enhance it.

A Spiritual Journey: Love for God Getting in touch with our natural feminine qualities enhances our unique identity, bringing out the best in each individual journey. As women navigate the complexities of life, this new year encourages us to deepen our connection with our spirituality, as we foster a greater love for God—a faith that transcends the challenges of the material world.

Independence: Balancing Softness and Strength Let’s look at financial independence—which is not just about earning money. It’s the freedom to make proactive choices about how to utilize your time in an impactful way. This new year challenges women to redefine independence, moving beyond the narrow confines of financial autonomy. Meet Mark Moore, Jr. CEO of The Moore Group Enterprises Atlanta, Georgia Mark Moore, Jr. resides in Atlanta. A graduate of Morehouse College, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. He is the CEO and founder of The Moore Group Enterprises, under which he successfully hosts retreats, master classes, summits, and conferences— with attendees worldwide. It is headquartered at the M3 Center, a world-class turnkey production studio, office and event space in Marietta, Georgia. He is also a pastor.

Mark’s impact on marketplace ministry is unparalleled. He grew his flagship conference, The Young Leaders Conference (YLC), from fifty initially to filling convention centers and arenas with over 5,000 registrants, originating from forty-nine states and over twenty countries. In 2019, YLC made history as the first faith-based conference to host five presidential candidates at one time. It’s a new year—when many of us find ourselves reciting that common phrase, “This is going to be my year.” We feel pumped and ready to take action for growth in our career, business or financial profile. Little do we acknowledge it; but every year our goals seem to get away from us. Have you allowed the circumstances of life to interrupt your progress? How do you recover and prepare for a truly progressive 2024? Here are ten steps you can take toward a successful 2024. > FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | WINTER 2024 | 32

1. Define your ultimate professional and financial goal.

Although you may have many goals, it is important to identify your ultimate professional and financial goals. For example, if your goal is to build a million-dollar business, then that is the ultimate goal. That does not mean you plan to build that million-dollar business in 2024. It simply means that your activities during the year should be specific to supporting this ultimate goal.

Goals are merely an explicit objective that gives you direction and purpose toward an aspiration. Make sure that all your actions are activities performed in support of the goal. If your activities—and daily habits—do not contribute to meeting your ultimate goal, then you need to challenge your reasoning for providing time for that activity.

2. Play devil’s advocate.

It is easy to see all the benefits of something great. But it is even more important to recognize the potential challenges that are likely to occur.

By identifying such challenges, you are getting in front of potential problems with potential resolutions. Challenges may be directly or indirectly related to the actual action items associated with your ultimate goal. A challenge may include a life change, a job change, health issues, additional 3. 4. Recap the prior year.

Just as you should forecast future challenges, it is a good idea to recap the previous challenges. The best failures are the ones that have taught you something.

Have you failed hard at something? Ask yourself, “Would I do it again? And if so, how would I do it differently?” No mishaps should be ignored. There is always something there to learn.

It takes a village to build a business, a career or even a fortune. Do not believe you can do this alone. The vision and concepts may begin with you; but you will need others during the journey. This may include an advisor or mentor (someone you trust who understands your walk); a loved one who cares about your hard work, your commitments and the sacrifices you’ll make; and a team that can introduce the skills you do not possess.

5. Create a strategic plan.

Create a strategic plan—also called an action plan— based upon the lessons you’ve learned from failures and your forecasted setbacks, always keeping the ultimate goal in mind. This plan should include a financial plan, an operating plan, and—depending on the nature of your business—a marketing plan. Each plan should have supportive information that stems from challenging questions and provides a clear trace of the result.

Each day should be productive. The only days that are professionally unproductive are the days you take off.

Unproductive workdays should be unacceptable. At the end of each day, acknowledge your productivity. Did your productivity add progress or value to your ultimate goal?

For example, let’s say your goal is to increase revenues by ten percent. You would need to determine which months are likely to experience a “real” increase in sales. Your challenge questions might include the following: Exactly what will be done to warrant an increase in sales?

How long is the marketing-to-sales conversion period (if there is an increase in marketing)?

Does the increase in revenue cause an increase in expense and if so, does the bottom line (net profit) actually increase? Or decrease?

6. Take a breath.

It is not enough to have a goal and a plan. You must be in a positive mental space to pursue the activities necessary to make progress. Some of the operational activities may be stressful and overwhelming. Your expectations of others may become disappointments.

There may be false commitments.

In the end, the show must go on. Take a deep breath and learn quickly to adapt to it all. Always make time for self care. Your priority is not anyone else’s.

Productivity increases your ability to leverage by providing the ability to extend your productivity beyond yourself. Since time is a fixed uncontrollable asset, there is no point in trying to cram more work into the time you have. But you can strive to ensure that the quality of the work performed during the allotted time is productive and valuable.

9. Evaluate.

Periodically review progress levels to see how well you have performed to date. These reviews should be done as regularly and frequently as possible. Do not let too much time go by that you become distant from the items in your strategic plan. Large time gaps will result in a greater risk of failure or falling short of completing your annual goal.

10. Repeat.

Follow the blueprint. Once you see that the method is working, your job is to follow it. Do not try to change what works well unless that change is tested in a manner that does not negatively impact existing success.

Your focus is to recover from the previous year and prepare for the new year’s days ahead. Your mindset, coupled with your strategic plan—and its execution despite any challenges—will propel the year’s performance, making your ultimate goal a reality. <

MY JOURNEY FROM TENNIS PRO TO SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSWOMAN

BY AMY PAZAHANICK I started my journey as a businesswoman early. I grew up playing competitive tennis. Eventually I earned a Division I collegiate tennis scholarship to Coastal Carolina University, where I earned a degree in Sports Management. When I was eighteen years old, I whipped up a flyer of all my tennis experience, printed copies, and rode my bike to different neighborhoods, putting flyers in people’s mailboxes. >

I have always been a self-starter. I do not know where this comes from, but it is something I have always had. Hard work was always something I was willing to do.

Perhaps this comes from my whole life of being an athlete and feeling comfortable pushing myself physically and mentally to be my best.

Anytime I was not competing on the tennis court and training for my collegiate career, I was coaching. I started working in a tennis academy when I was nineteen years old. I taught summer tennis camps for kids, and private tennis lessons to anyone. I have worked my way up every step of the way. Upon college graduation, I worked full-time in a tennis academy as an Assistant Tennis Professional. I remember being so excited for that very first business card. I was always super passionate about coaching and helping people improve their tennis game. I taught tennis for forty to fifty hours a week for about a decade—until my business finally grew too big for me to continue to coach on court.

When I was twenty-six years old, I started my own academy, Agape Tennis Academy. Agape started out as a staff of one: me. I already had a good reputation as a coach, so a lot of junior tennis players would come to me for coaching.

I was very passionate about their improvement and very diligent with their training. In those days, I generally only had one mode: intense! I was a drill sergeant! Because I cared deeply . >

There is a saying that “no one cares about what you know, until they know how much you care.” Those kids worked their hearts out for me. I was always able to demand that from them because they knew how much I cared. I saw many of my tennis students climb the ranks and eventually achieve college tennis scholarships for themselves.

Today I am thirty-eight years old, and my days are no longer spent creating tennis champions on court. Now I help create champion coaches and leaders. Agape Tennis Academy manages eleven public tennis centers. We have a staff of over eighty professionals. And we’re “bi-coastal”! We have locations in Atlanta, Dunwoody, Decatur, and Clarkston, Georgia as well as in Oxnard, Fountain Valley, and Camarillo, California. >

There have been many lessons I have learned along the way from a team of one to eighty. A couple of the most important keys for me have been perseverance, consistency and innovation. Perseverance is especially needed, in order to sustain changing business environments over time. There are many challenging times throughout the various stages of business. Having the courage and perseverance to stick it out is key.

Consistency over time adds up. Agape has had a very clear and consistent mission and set of core values that have never changed since I founded the company in 2012. Our mission is enriching people and communities through tennis. Our core values are H.E.A.R.T.: Honesty, Excellence, Attitude, Responsibility, Teamwork. These are weaved throughout our company in a multitude of ways. This consistency over time has given us a longstanding reputation.

The flip side of consistency is knowing what things need to change, which is innovation.

Innovation—and knowing what to keep the same (core values and mission), versus what to change—is critical. It is important that over time we are constantly evolving and expanding our ways of thinking. In our industry this means staying relevant on social media; keeping up with coaching techniques and principles; creating news events and programming; and trying new things—such as the recent pickleball explosion. Our company was one of the first organizations to run a fullservice pickleball program. A few years later we were voted the “Public Pickleball Provider of the Year” for the nation! Being one of the first organizations to try something new resulted in bigger and better results.

ADDITIONAL BUSINESS PRINCIPLES FOR RUNNING AN ORGANIZATION THAT HAVE WORKED FOR ME: An organization is a machine consisting of two major parts: people and culture. A great organization has both great people and a great culture.

Tough love is effective for achieving both great work and great relationships. One can’t compromise the uncompromisable.

Understand that individuals are wired very differently.

Getting the right people in the right roles in support of your goal is the key to succeeding at whatever you choose to accomplish.

Don’t let loyalty to people stand in the way of the truth and the well-being of the organization.

Pay for the person, not the job.

Don’t hide your observations about people.

Don’t hire people just to fit the first job they will do. Hire people you want to share your life with.

If you are open-minded enough and determined, you can get virtually anything you want.

To me, the greatest success you can have as the person in charge is to orchestrate others to do things well without you.

AND, THE MOST IMPORTANT KEY OF ALL MUST BE PASSION! YOU MUST LOVE WHAT YOU DO TO BE ABLE TO BE CONSISTENT OVER TIME.

We've traversed the ups and downs of life, navigated the challenges, and raised our children together, all within the confines of the online world.

My name is Joy Nebere and I live in Kenya. I am forty-eight years of age, and the mother of three— two girls and a boy. And grandma to one.

MOTHERHOOD & SELF CARE What is motherhood like in Kenya? How do you balance the responsibilities of motherhood with taking care of yourself?

Motherhood in Kenya is like motherhood anywhere else in the world—with its own challenges plus its positive side, too. Single motherhood in Kenya can be more challenging, especially when you're working and taking care of the kids at the same time. Most of our workplaces have hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 or 6:00 PM, so by the time you reach home it is late—and the kids are tired, hungry and sleepy. So the only real time you've got with the kids is Sunday. And that’s when you're also busy with house chores. Unless you have a nanny. Having a nanny also depends on how much you're earning. You have to have enough to employ one.

KENYAN CULTURE in the Kenyan tradition of marriage, if a lady wants to get married, a man has to visit her place along with the elders in his community to ask for a hand in marriage.

And he has to and pay what we call a dowry—in the form of cows , goats and money, which is a sign that the lady’s side has accepted the man in the society. What I do for self care is exercise. I walk at least 10,000 steps five times a week. I skip rope, too. Nature walks are therapeutic for me. Also, the beach is a place I love the most—although it is far from my place so that needs some planning.

What advice would you give to other moms about the importance of self care?

The advice I'll give other moms about self care is that a healthy mom has healthy kids. Focus on the positive things.

No matter how low you feel, positivity and gratitude will boost your self-esteem and lower your stress level. When you do self care it radiates in you. You glow inside out.

To encourage any mothers out there who are caring for children with special needs, as you do, what can you share about that?

As I’ve said, my son has cerebral palsy. It hasn't been an easy journey. First, in our culture, it’s believed that it's the woman’s fault if a child is born with a disability. A man is ashamed to be associated with that kid and doesn’t want to be part of that family. So this results in you taking care of the child single-handedly—which means depression and wanting to stay away from people.

Therapy is expensive and so is medications plus everything else the kid will need. We have very minimal help as children with disabilities are concerned. Money is set aside but there’s no idea how it helps. Because if they can't offer free therapy and medications, then what are the funds for children’s disabilities supposed to accomplish?

As I bid farewell to the past and embrace the possibilities of the future, there is an undeniable sense of anticipation. A new year brings with it a clean slate filled with untold possibilities and uncharted adventures. It is in this spirit that I can embark on the journey of self-discovery, weaving through the tapestry of the old to welcome in the new. I am navigating a new season in a new year. Come and journey with me!

As I navigate, I am met with the subtle changes that come with the turning of seasons. The air holds a crispness that welcomes the arrival of winter, a season of reflection and hibernation. It is a reminder that, just like nature, we, too, undergo cycles of growth, dormancy and renewal. With each passing day, the journey becomes a ritual of preparation, not just for a new year but for each new season in my life.

The journey begins with a simple yet profound realization: the importance of bidding farewell to the past year, acknowledging its lessons, and embracing its memories. I have found myself drawn to the places that held sections of the year gone by—places that echoed with laughter, whispered secrets and unspoken dreams.

Each step has been a deliberate act of closure—a conscious decision to let go of the burdens and sorrows that lingered in the shadows. It’s time to cuddle up to the new.

I explore introspective practices, journaling my thoughts and aspirations, and setting intentions for the chapters that await me. As the chapter pages turn, I discover the beauty of including the unknown. The path ahead is an exciting prospect rather than a source of anxiety.

Whether it’s a career move, a lifestyle adjustment, or a personal transformation, viewing change as an opportunity for growth will lead to fulfilling experiences.

Cultivate Relationships Nurture and strengthen your relationships with family, friends and colleagues. Meaningful connections contribute significantly to our overall well-being and happiness. Schedule regular time for social interactions, so that you’ll always have a sense of community support.

Prioritize Self Care It’s easy to neglect self care because we think we’re “too busy.” Neglect self care at your peril.

Make a commitment to prioritize your physical, mental and emotional well-being. Incorporate activities that bring joy, peace, relaxation and rejuvenation into your routine to foster a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. Consider that it may also be time to commit to working with a professional therapist or counselor.

Practice Gratitude Amid life’s challenges and triumphs, practicing gratitude can be a powerful tool for maintaining a positive outlook. Take time each day to reflect on the things you are grateful for—big or small.

Gratitude provides resilience and a much deeper appreciation for life’s blessings.

There comes a time when we have to simply let go of some things, some people, some thoughts, and some tasks. Maybe we took them all on out of obligation or perceived expectations.

Recovery for many is a transformation—the result of overcoming great adversity.

Testimonies of strength, resilience and renewed outlook often come out of recovering from a tough life experience.

Recovery takes time. The seasons of recovery vary depending on the situation.

Some people are in our lives based on their agenda—and their agenda may not be conducive to the well-being of our mind, body, soul and spirit. Sometimes we don’t realize we are being held captive by another’s narcissistic tendencies. Sometimes we feel as though we have to do a certain task that others expect us to do. Why? Because we have always done it and we don’t want to let anyone down. No matter the reason, there comes a time when we must release.

REMOVE Sometimes we must remove ourselves from certain situations or environments. While we may have released certain people, tasks and thoughts, a particular situation may warrant your removal from a certain environment. Now I realize that physically moving from one home to another may not be feasible. However, you can choose not to operate in the same space as those who have become toxic in your life.

There may even be a person in your own home who has become unhealthy for you. I recall, when I worked as a school counselor, having to counsel students who had to cope in toxic environments.

They were still minors and therefore could not just move out and live on their own. Many of them chose to engage in daily after-school activities that kept them away from home as much as possible. Then once at home, they spent a lot of time in their room. Not the best way to live but it’s certainly an option when you find yourself in a difficult situation. (And by the way, I’ve heard from many of those very students, and they are thriving today as productive adults. They are learning from their experiences, applying the lessons they learned to their present lives as a spouse, parent, co-worker or family member.)

Chloé: What are you most passionate about right now?

Susan: Over the last twenty-plus years, I've done a lot of different types of things. A very wide range. I started off doing a lot of work under water and in conservation. I was able to write for and successfully be given grant opportunities from the National Park Service, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and other governmental agencies. I did a lot of work in the equestrian world.

Then I started getting into different sports topics. I've always been passionate about the value of sports to the individual, to the community, and to the world. I think athletes are misunderstood, misinterpreted, and sometimes even unnecessarily defended. I wanted to raise awareness about athletes’ various identity issues and transition issues—ranging from financial responsibility to mental health to service as a community business. I am aiming to address a wide variety of topics dispelling this or that about athletes— asking them for their stories.

I’m asking questions that typically they don't get asked about when they are interviewed for sports television stations, or having a conversation with a broadcaster. It's usually "tell me about your best game" or "tell me about how you feel” when this happened or that happened, on the court or on the field. Or "what was it like when you won that award?"

But what about the person? Who is that young person who is going through a lot, and growing into an adult?

Athletes are often expected to be superstars when they walk onto that court. The pressures and challenges are often misunderstood. There’s a lack of awareness.

I also think that athletes themselves need that peerto-peer support. And that's something that I have brought to the table even prior to the film releasing.

We've done a lot of focus groups and roundtables, where athletes can hear their peers talk about a lot of the things that they face in their life. The younger athletes begin to understand that whether they make it to the NBA or the NFL or the LPGA is not the point.

Sure, it's wonderful to do that, but the percentage who get there is small. Even the high school athletes who go no farther than high school have amazing qualities and skill sets— leadership, team-building, self-awareness— which they can transform and relate to in whatever they do in life, to make a valuable impact upon society. It's important that they understand the power they have.

Chloé: What is it that you like best about what you're working on now—making the film Beyond the Game?

Susan: The positive reaction that I get from everyone is overwhelming. When I have shown sneak peeks at various sporting events or focus groups, the number of people who come up to me and say, "I'm so glad you did this.” Athletes say to me, “I'm so glad that we get to tell the story in our own words. You're changing the narrative about what society often says about athletes.”

It's getting them up on a platform that is different from personal branding or professional branding. It allows them to come out authentically, and trust, and voice their passions or talk about their business—what they're doing beyond their sport—and how they're making a difference in the world.

Chloé: What is your ideal for your movie, after the March 2nd premier?

Susan: With the premiere on March 2nd, the film is flooded for different streaming opportunities—as well as a college tour of over eighty schools. There will be the distributed theatrical version as well as streaming, and the college tour is directed toward student athletes. So we're going to be quite busy from March all the way through the next year, with different opportunities. For example, on January 7th I'll be at the American Football Coaches Association in Nashville, and 6,500 coaches will be there. I'll be showing sneak peeks of the film and also introducing some of the books related to the people in the film as well. I'm just so looking forward to the

Susan: Oh, that is the question I ask every time I conclude a documentary film interview!

I think athletes are beginning to understand the power that their identity holds, and that doesn't mean you have to become a professional champion.

You can be the girl who played high school field hockey—with an understanding that what you built in your character, your identity, your confidence, your self-esteem, and the skill sets you learned on the field, are all empowering—and that you can really do whatever you set your mind to.

Speaking with Steven was truly a full-circle experience, as we had originally met and worked together for a short time in 2008. I must say that Steven has grown up since then in many areas of his life. I found it to be quite refreshing reconnecting with him. I’m excited to share his story with you.

Chloé: Steven, it's been years since we have connected.

Sixteen, in fact.

Chloé: Oh, I like the sound of that. I think I've heard about it on National Public Radio.

Steven: I'll start with getting caught up on my family because this is really the root of my motivation for everything that I do. So, since we last connected, Chloé, I have remarried, for seven years now. And together we have five children. My oldest child, who you met years ago, is now twenty, and attending Tuskegee Institute. Through marriage, my wife and I have a nineteen-year-old daughter. Then we have my son with my former wife; he's fifteen and our third oldest.

My wife and I together—well, Chloé, we’ve got them going out the door and we’ve got them coming in!—we have one child who’s almost five and one almost eight years old.

Steven: They were actually started by the Dalai Lama along with a Buddhist monk. They came over to the States and they were given professorships at Emory University. And they started this campaign—essentially to help people understand the connection between mindfulness and compassion.

So, back when you were my coach, I was doing a lot of web developing, and that was really my main focus. I grew that as a career. I worked for Auto Trader for quite some time, and after leaving I started my own practice. This was after my separation from my first wife. I ran my own business as a web developer for about three years strong. I had some pretty big clients back then—like Kandi Burruss, from Real Housewives of Atlanta. She was my biggest client. I had been brought on to do her TagsATL website. At the time that was a huge thing for her. She was getting a lot of exposure. And that really sustained my business. She was my flagship client who introduced me to other affluent clients.

After that, I ended up going to work for the Yellow Pages digital version doing online advertising, and I consistently moved up the ranks there. I was there for maybe about eight years, doing my thing as a web developer. I ended up moving into the marketing department under web development.

They were bought out and I was laid off. So I started work as a web developer for Emory University, which is where I'm at currently. So that’s my nine-to-five, even though I approach my voiceover career as a nine-to-five as well.

People often ask me, "How do you do all of it at the same time?" I just do it. I'm a very, very involved dad. I cook, I pick up, I do drop-offs—all of that. It's just a part of what I love to do. I've been at the university almost five years now as a web developer. The department that I work in is called the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics.

The primary focus is creating educational tools for adults and children. They have several different programs. I support basically all four programs that fall under the umbrella. One of the programs is the Emory–Tibet Science Initiative, which is to preserve Tibetans’ works and help them to understand education from a Western standpoint. There is also SEE Learning (the SEE means fostering Social, Emotional and Ethical intelligence), geared towards mindfulness and compassion-based learning for children. That is basically a curriculum that's geared toward middle school, elementary school and high school students.

It's all just a really cool initiative to be a part of! And then, of course, I support the center for The Compassion Shift, which is supported by the Walton Foundation and the Walton Group. They're huge contributors. And this one is really geared toward adults—helping adults understand mindfulness and compassion towards one’s self, a shift toward a focus of compassion in one's life and for others. It’s about how we connect—and how we're all connected. >

KIDS & MINDFULNESS

I can honestly say, three years ago, I figured out my life's mission.

Chloé: Steven, tell us how this has been a part of you being and becoming who you are now.

Steven: It’s been so influential in so many ways. As a matter of fact, I will honestly say that through some of the transitions I've gone through in life, the involvement that I've had and all that I've learned while working at the Center has been integral in my growth—mainly when it comes to mindfulness and meditation. These are big parts of how I start my day and how I try to end my day.

It's all rooted in gratitude. Honestly, that's the crux of where I'm at right now. Everything is centered around that. And I credit a lot of my success in voiceover work to that as well.

Honestly, mindfulness, and being able to have gratitude for the things that you experience in your life, including my family—they're the reasons why I do what I do.

I've always had a very creative bug. Back when you and I first started working together, I was a musician. And in a lot of ways, I still am. I was working in a studio I built myself. I was behind the boards. I was doing production. So a lot of those things that I had in my back pocket, I use to this day, to be successful in voice acting. It’s what has all led me here.

Chloé: Yes. You were doing the things that you could do and what you were good at, obviously. And it seems that they've all come together and aligned for your personal excellence.

Steven: That’s right. I can honestly say, three years ago, I figured out my life's mission. It seems like a very lofty type of thing to say, but it’s a fact: I figured out my life’s mission. And truly, it is to inspire through creativity. It's very simple. I used the word lofty as opposed to crazy. Because I think it seems like such a huge task to figure out your life's mission. But it's the one thing that you know you can do every day if you weren't getting paid for it. And you would go happily and do it every single hour and day of your life. So, finding my mission was huge for me. Now, everything that I approach, I approach from that perspective.

Chloé: That's wonderful. And I'm sure that keeps you in a constant state of appreciation, doesn't it? I'm so happy for you that you found this for yourself. Now let's fast forward to your voice—how you use it, and how you found yourself into this field. Your voice is powerful, smooth, attractive, commanding, compelling and inspiring. You've got all that in there. And I never knew about it before this year!

Steven: It's funny—a lot of voice actors will get that same reaction. Someone will say, "You have such a nice voice." And let me tell you about what I've gone through with this voiceover journey since 2013, when I signed with my very first voice talent agency. That was Houghton Talent in Atlanta. I was assigned to them because I had always been behind a microphone and performing, and loving to perform.

So I decided to really take the plunge early on and create my own voiceover demo. A friend of my mom's, she introduced me to all of it. She said, “Well, if it’s something you really want to do, I know someone who's an actress, and she knows a few people.” So I passed it to her. And she said, “Oh, this is a wonderful representation. Let me introduce you to a producer in Chicago that I know.” So, she sent my demo over.

He listened to it. He's like, “Hey, you got something, man. So, if you're serious about this, why don't you fly out? Let's sit down and talk, and let's see where we go from there.”

And I did just that. I flew out to Chicago. After we talked a bit, he got to know me. He offered to produce my very first voiceover demo, which essentially is just four or five different types of commercial tracks put together to showcase your range of what you can do. He told me I have a natural instinct for reading scripts and understanding the cadences that go into commercial copy. So we produced it.

He said that he gave me a brief introduction to some agencies. He sent out some emails with some recommendations. Houghton was one of the first to respond.

They said, “Come talk to us before you talk to anybody else.

And let's see what we can do.” I signed with them the same day I went to go meet with them!

Now, interestingly enough, though, I had no formal training.

So this is the key. It was 2013 when I signed with them, and I booked my very first commercial out of the gate for Publix. It was a radio spot—a national radio spot. I'm feeling good. My agent said, “No one books their very first one out the gate.” I thought, “Wow, this is wonderful!” But then I didn't book anything else—for almost three years!

So, fast forward to 2016—it was audition after audition. That is a lot of what we do. The job of a voice actor is to audition.

It's not the booking. The job is to audition. So, I did that.

Unsuccessfully.

Then life just takes you away. I met my wife. That was almost a decade ago. >

Everyone who's good at something— regardless of how talented you are— needs formal training.

Steven, continued: It's so interesting to say that we even met at all. Because neither one of us would go out very often.

I had my two children, and she had her one child, and we always stayed in on New Year's Eve. But each of us decided this one New Year's Eve to go out on a party bus in Atlanta.

That's where we met, and we've been best friends ever since.

During that time, again, I was going through a transition. I’d lost my job. She was there during that time—to see how I made it to the new job at the Yellow Pages. I was still working as a web developer, but still holding on to that desire to be a voice actor. And I had all my equipment at home. But I just set it down. After so much auditioning—and just life, kids—I let it take over.

Then the pandemic happened. And everybody's at home. So, I decided to go back to doing voiceovers. But this time, I wanted to figure out what I was doing wrong. I knew I had something, because I’d booked that first one. But I didn't really know what I wasn't doing right. Well, what I needed was training.

Everyone who's good at something—regardless of how talented you are—needs formal training.

Chloé: I have to interject here. Yes, we can have all the talent. And I mean, really great talent. But if we have not been trained, and if we don’t practice, practice, practice, and practice, practice, practice some more—well, eventually somebody's going to sit you down and tell you that you're an amateur. That's just the truth. Practice. I mean, that's just the name of the game. How far can people get without it?

That's what many people really don't understand today— how much practice you really have to put into something.

Steven: Yes. It's the work. It's funny, because once you begin to get tapped in, then you also start to hear the subtle messages that the universe and God will send you—to help you along your journey.

One of those clear signs came for me when I watched a documentary about Kobe Bryant, when he passed. It inspired me, because it talked about one important thing, which is what he called “the Mamba Mentality.” His relentlessness impressed me. Kobe said, “Hard work outweighs talent—every time.” So it’s not necessarily just about being better than everyone else. He continuously outworked himself. Steven, continued: A lot of the landscape of voiceover actors is that we all audition for a lot of the same stuff. And people will say to me, “There's a lot of competition out there.” And I say, “Honestly, my only competition is me—plus the last work I did to be better than the last thing I just did.”

Because you have to realize that that work—that training that you put into it—the relentlessness that you have about learning and perfecting your craft will also of course be combined with your talent. And that is what's going to propel you to heights greater than you can imagine.

So, I took that approach of relentlessness. And that's what made all the difference. I decided to sign up for some workshops, and surround myself with a community. I have a worksheet that I created that honestly lists the pillars of what inspires me. And at the very top of it is community.

Community can be one person, or it can be many. But the truth is, no matter what we're doing, the community that we surround ourselves with is a big part of our trajectory. We don't realize how much the energies around us will affect us as we continue to move toward our destination—toward our goals. So I surrounded myself with a community that was about not just being successful as a voice actor, but also about how to authentically embrace who I am.

So, a big mistake that many voice actors make as they come into voice acting is that they want to sound like other people who are successful. That's easy to do because you want to be successful. So, you think, “OK, well, if I sound like that guy, then that's the key.”

But the real key is embracing who we are and then allowing the training to take root—so it’s that authenticity that is the voice we project. That is what people feel from what we perform as actors. And that’s made all the difference.

I decided to be simply relentless about the amount of training and the amount of work. It’s auditions. The job is to audition.

Chloé: It seems to me that since you figured this out, I'm seeing everything coming up for you. I just found you on LinkedIn after sixteen years, and from my view, it seems like every other day you have a new amazing national commercial.

Steven: It's very surreal. I'm grateful. I'm very grateful. But again, it’s the gratitude that grounds me. And another huge thing is giving back. When people reach out to me, I like it.

Someone I consider a colleague—someone I looked at as an inspiration early on—came to me yesterday and asked to pay me to coach them. And I'm like, “First of all, no, I'm not going FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | WINTER 2024 | 74

to take your money. But I'm happy to spend time doing whatever it is, either sharing my story or techniques.” My happy space is inspiring people. And to me, it just feels like that's a part of what we do. We give back to others who are looking to improve. A win is helping someone get to where they want to be just by a simple word. Simply by time spent.

You know what I mean?

Chloé: That energy that you put into another person, when they win—it certainly does come back to you, doesn't it? It gives you more energy.

Steven: Yes, without question. Here's something also that I’ve figured out. When it comes down to manifestation—our natural ebb and flow as humans, because we are made of energy—it’s this: There's no straight line to success. This is what it is. The real success comes from being able to ride with it, and not allow that to change your perception of who you are. It’s so important to stay grounded in the fact that sometimes things are going to be down. And when the chips are down, what I’ve found is that the most useful thing to do is to reach out and uplift someone else. Because not only does that give you energy, but you also walk away forgetting what it was that had you down in the first place.

Chloé: Amen.

Steven: That's the ebb and flow of what I've learned. It is the most beneficial thing to ride what I call the wave. I'm grateful. You just never know. I've had some amazing opportunities come to me—at times where you just can't quantify where it came from, or how it came. I just know I'm grateful, and that's really it.

And it continues to get better! One of my big goals is to be the voice of an animated character—as a regular. Longevity is what I'm looking for—to become an icon as a voice actor.

That can show up in many different ways. But I do know that inspiring people is what that's going to be rooted in. You can inspire people in many different ways.

Now, while I'm waiting to become a voice actor on an animated motion picture as a regular, I decided to create my own—based on my skill set, on what I've already been doing and on the relationships I've created.

It's like just starting. When you say enough is enough and you want to see the best of yourself, then it's just time to go all in. It's given me a whole new level of inspiration. What I'm creating is something that I want to have: longevity. I envision what I’m doing is for Black families. Because I have such a huge family, that was the inspiration for it. There's seven of us here in this house, so there's always plenty of content to pull from. Plenty of entertainment. >

Chloé: It sounds like you’re creating your own family show.

Steven: I've always said that in my head. So why not go ahead and create it? So that's exactly what I've done. It's one of the things in this next year that I'll be putting out. I plan to do a short film and take it to the festivals. I'm going to voice one of the characters in that short film. There's my animation! I'm not waiting for someone to give me a role.

Chloé: As a voice actor, what would you share with anyone, no matter their age, who's aspiring to be a voice actor?

Steven: A few things. Like I said, the community of people you surround yourself with is important—people you find who are going to help bring out the best of what you have to offer. And being authentically you is huge. Don’t feel like you have to sound like someone else to be successful. And training. Please, don't neglect the training! Having a nice voice, honestly, is the least important thing in voiceover, believe it or not.

There are so many people with deep voices. There are so many people with strong voices. There are lots of people with different aspects of their voice—I mean, think about it.

We have a world of eight billion people. Trust me, there's someone out there who has a voice just as beautiful, just as resonant. What truly separates each of us is our experiences.

And that's what we bring.

One of my coaches actually offered this to me: “You're not a voice talent. You're an actor. You're a voice actor.” And that’s really with a Big A, little V—voice Actor. Your experiences inform how you perceive things and how you read things.

There are so many different areas of voiceover.

Commercials, narration, and so on. Let’s just stick with national commercials. With commercials, there are different aspects to it. The voice talent is generally the last piece of a production. Usually, you have the writer, you have the video editor, and you have the person who is creating the sound.

You have all of these different people involved. You have a person who's in charge of actually finding the voice talent.

You need to be able to understand all this. The writer is one of the biggest pieces—because the writer has thirty seconds, fifteen seconds, or even just ten seconds (depending on how long the commercial is), to get the message across. And you, as the voice actor, have to be able to understand the subtle nuances of what they've written and how to convey that message through your experience.

And so, while it seems like a lot, it becomes muscle memory after you do it so many times, which is where the work comes in. And that's where the auditioning comes in. And that applies to anything you do. In basketball, you don't see people who have been playing for a while still going out there trying to figure out how to dribble. It's muscle memory. At this point, they can dribble and don't think about it.

As you become adept to what you've learned, it's all grounded in you. It's all grounded in being authentically you, and speaking from your experience. Because no one else has that. That's the one thing that no one could ever have—your experiences. So, it will always be unique from that.

Then, from there, you’ve just got to set it and forget it, and move on to the next audition. And have fun! And never lose sight of your purpose. My logo is my name. But at the very top, it says, "Where acting meets inspiration." Because inspiration is my life's mission, through creativity. And being a voice actor, I get to do that every day. Connecting with that makes it fun.

I never lose sight of why I started and why I love doing what I do. And if we can all find that in the things that we do every day, it'll never feel like work. That's really where I'm at with it. People say, “Wow, he's so successful.” But honestly, it's more to me like, “Wow, I'm having so much fun doing this.”

I'm grateful to be able to say that—because that was not always the case for my entire working life.

Chloé: Really?

Steven: Really. That's just the truth of what many of us go through. We don't always find our purpose right away. We don’t always see it in the mundane things we’re doing. But this experience has also allowed me the opportunity to look at my life quite differently. The truth is, it's really about finding that gratitude and fun every day, in every moment, no matter what you’re doing.

Chloé: I am so happy for you, that you have aligned yourself with your talents and your aspirations—and it's come out as who you're being right now. It's really beautiful to be able to hear your story. And most importantly to hear that you are so appreciative, and having fun and being grateful. I always say, “Work your play and play your work”—and it seems like that's exactly what you're doing. You're working your play and playing your work. Congratulations! Once the holidays are over, we know that more Winter is ahead. And Winter can be cold! But that does not mean that we have to be. Here at the Behavior Etiquette Institute (BEI), we promote what we call “etiquette beyond the fork”—beyond just the commonly accepted social behaviors and social graces. We believe that there’s etiquette and decorum to pretty much everything we do—even to the four seasons! Now let’s dive into the etiquette of Winter, and dare to ditch any chilly behaviors.

The bitter Winter’s cold can have its bearings on our behavior or mood. This may be especially true for our brothers and sisters in the Midwest and the North. We understand that having to wake up in the wee hours of the morning to plow or shovel snow before going into the office is no bueno! And imagine: all this before the first cup of Joe. Yikes!

According to the Mayo Clinic, in the colder months, human behavior has the tendency to change for the worse. During Winter, diminished sunlight can trigger what is called winter-onset Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD disrupts our body's internal clock, which can result in depressive feelings. Lowered serotonin levels (a neurotransmitter influencing mood) might contribute to this seasonal condition.

This, coupled with the added activities necessary to navigate Winter, with the discomfort of lower temperatures, may affect how we express ourselves— at home, work or play. So, especially during the Winter months, we must be extra mindful of our interactions.

inter began with the holidays, a time to be cheerful and jolly. We’ve gathered with family and loved ones, sometimes for extended periods of time.

For many of us, this included extended periods of time with our in-laws. Making it through this time can be challenging for some, and hosting that uber-critical mother-in-law in your home didn’t make it any easier. But fret not! You can recover.

We offer here some socially graceful tips that’ll guarantee you a wonderful Winter.

18 Tips to help you maintain a pleasant mood and combat the Winter blues: Stay Active: Exercise helps improve mood by releasing endorphins, even if it's just a short walk outside.

Get Sufficient Sleep: Ensure you're getting enough rest to avoid feeling groggy or easily irritated.

Manage Stress: Practice relaxation techniques—like meditation or deep breathing—to help keep stress levels in check. >

Stay Warm: Dress in layers and keep your living space comfortably warm to avoid discomfort that can lead to irritability.

Get Sufficient Sunlight: Try to spend time outdoors during daylight hours. Natural light can improve your mood and energy levels.

Maintain Flexibility: Be adaptable. When you have friends and family over, be willing to compromise to accommodate different preferences, finding a balance that works for everyone involved.

Take Breaks When Needed: Allow yourself and your partner moments alone so you can each relax and recharge.

Practice Empathy and Understanding: In conversations, make an effort to understand the other person’s perspectives. Be empathetic, which can often diffuse tense situations and create a more harmonious environment.

You can just listen instead of throwing in your two cents.

Communication is Key: Maintain open and respectful communication. Discuss plans, preferences, and any potential issues before making major decisions to avoid misunderstandings.

Set Boundaries: Clearly define personal boundaries while remaining considerate. Establishing boundaries helps in managing expectations and ensures a more comfortable environment for everyone.

Find Common Ground: When getting together with new friends, coworkers, neighbors or even with folks you’ve known forever, you can always look for shared interests or activities that you can enjoy together. Engaging in something mutually enjoyable creates positive interactions and strengthens your bonds.

Offer Variety: Consider dietary restrictions and preferences when planning meals. Providing a range of food options ensures everyone feels included and satisfied.

But you probably shouldn’t experiment with a new recipe if you’re going to a potluck; stick with tried and true comfort food as much as possible. (And if Aunt Sally’s mystery dish isn’t as delectable as she imagined it to be, you don’t have to tell her.)

Focus on Positivity: Maintain a positive attitude.

Emphasize appreciation and gratitude wherever you go.

Be Kind: Throughout the year—but especially during the Winter months—simple acts of kindness will brighten someone's day and provide comfort, support and warmth when it's needed most.

A daily practice of politeness and consideration is especially critical during the Winter months because cold weather and darker days tend to affect our mood and overall well-being. Beginning with the holidays, this can be tough for many people—and for some, the symptoms of SAD can last until Spring.

Every day, social grace is essential. It makes for positive interactions and relationships. It allows for smoother communication, demonstrates respect for others, and helps us navigate various social settings with ease. It can greatly influence how people perceive and connect with one another.

Remember always to extend the grace we’d want others to extend to us. This will bolster your sense of community and help spread warmth in the midst of the cold season.

If more of us practiced extending grace to one another, how much better would this world be? <

Delegate Responsibilities: Assign tasks or activities to keep everyone occupied and involved, reducing any idle time that might lead to tension.

Have an Exit Strategy: Designate a quiet space or plan a way out for yourself or others if tensions do rise, allowing everyone a chance to diffuse any potential conflicts.

Be Attentive: Pay attention to others' needs and preferences, making them feel welcomed and comfortable.

Anticipate any requirements others might have and address them proactively.

Create a Welcoming Atmosphere: Set a warm and inviting ambiance by making your space warm and cozy, which will invite people to engage in conversation, fostering a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.

The Comedian You Won’t Forget!

Jessica: I was actually the ugly girl. Therefore I came off much more quiet—because I was picked on so badly, I was scared to bring any extra attention that would make it worse. So up until about eighth grade, I was a different story.

However, some seeds were planted that kind of brought things out. For example, if we go back to when we were little kids, I was once forced on stage with my brothers to sing with my mom, grandma, aunts, uncle and cousins. We hated it.

But by the time I was eight, I started to learn that I was more comfortable in front of people than I realized. At the time I didn't know it was going anywhere.

My entire life was changed with a sock puppet show—which was a seventh-grade English assignment. My show was voted the best! Both kids and teachers talked about it all day.

I had a massive crush on this boy who didn't know I existed. Turns out, he heard about it too!

The moment he complimented my show, my whole life changed! I decided I was going to be an actor, and that was how my journey started.

After college I came to Atlanta to act. Atlanta was only to jumpstart my career. I meant to go to New York or Los Angeles afterwards. However, I fell in love with Atlanta and stayed. Since folks knew I was funny, someone suggested I get into improv. I knew I could think of things off the top of my head, but I didn't realize how good I was.

In 2011, I gave a speech to a college about my journey. It was very funny. Everybody was like, “Oh my gosh! We felt like we were listening to a real live comedian!” So that year I decided I was going to be a comedian. Then in 2012 I had my very first stand-up comedy performance. That was September 2012. So, it's officially more than eleven years now.

Paula: Eleven years. It sounds like you came from a talented family—so you were pushed up there on stage. Even though you weren't feeling it, they put you up there. And that’s how the seed was planted. You didn't know which way it was going to grow, but the seed was planted back then. So out of that experience came your gift— your talent.

Sometimes so much good can come from the adversities of childhood. Like you said, you weren’t considered attractive. So even out of that, I would dare say, came a sense of finding your place, of finding who it is that you are. I just love the way that you shared it. The way you tell it, it seems like it all just started to fall into place.

So, how did you end up doing auctions?

Jessica: That one doesn't come out a whole lot, but it's actually a fact. I just did an event where somebody asked me, “Do you do auctions?” I'm like, “Do I? If you don't want a boring auction, then, yes!”

I'm a horrible salesperson. You do not want me to sell! But when it comes to auctions, yes.

There was a recent auction that was a silent auction. I had to get on stage and just literally ask for money. And when I say it was hilarious, it was! “Let me roll up my sleeves, take my jacket off. Right now, these kids need money.

Who's going to do it?” And it was a relatively small audience. I think like only half the audience was filled. But we raised six thousand dollars—on top of the silent auction at that. It was Six thousand and one. Because there was a child who wanted to make a big deal about his one-dollar donation.

Paula: It sounds like you are definitely an influencer.

Jessica: Yes. Well, when you're an artist, and you freelance, you're a private contractor, so work can drop a lot. I think if I was only a comedian, the struggle might be a little bit harder. Finding DJ gigs, and landing these other things that I do, helps. I mean, even before this, when I was teaching, I was auditioning. I was trying to act where I could, and trying to do modeling gigs where I could.

When comedy started to take over, that took me to a different level. When I became a DJ, the guy who convinced me to be a DJ made it clear that I should keep in mind that I want to use this to help build my career. “Don't get lost in the DJing,” he said. “Don't let it take away your original dreams.” And he was right. >

Jessica, continued: It was very helpful financially, especially when I was one of the top DJs in this karaoke bar, a restaurant kind of spot. There are sometimes I'm doing a lot of work, and a lot of the money might be coming from a really good DJ gig.

It’s mind blowing that I can live off of my craft and my career choice, my personality.

Paula: For our readers who are on their own journey of pursuing their dream—their passion, their gift, their talent—I’ve heard you speak very eloquently about that. You take that gift, and you take that talent. You take whatever it is. But you can utilize it within different branches of the tree, so to speak, and expound upon it—and therefore you can create different sources of income for yourself. In 2012, things started kicking off for you. Share with us some of the highs, some of the lows, some of the challenges.

Jessica: When you hear comedians talk about becoming a comedian, they say things like, “You're going to bomb your first few shows and it's going to be rough.” That is not my journey by any means. I came out the gate swinging. I had my own comedy special by my fifth stand-up comedy performance. I was producing shows by then. So, when I tell you from my first performance in 2012 all the way to when I won my first competition, in January 2014—it was like butter! That competition that I won, I remember the host and producer of the show pulling me to the side and saying, “Jessica, you didn't just win.

You won by a landslide!” I was on cloud nine! I could do no wrong, and I was going to go far.

My aunt died a week later. Obviously, when someone dies, it sucks. There was some family drama—which, you know folks, especially Black folks, don't like. Talk about family drama, right?

I have no shame or inhibition. My mama told me, “Stop telling folks our business.” I'm like, “Why? It's my story.” My aunt was one of the people I cut off for some things. And when she died, it was devastating because there were so many opportunities to make up for it. And when I tell you it broke me, it broke me. I cried for weeks. >

What's even sadder is, she was proud of me. She would say it online. She was always reaching out. She even asked for my address a few weeks before she passed. And I wondered why. But then I thought, “If she gives me money, I could work on this forgiveness thing.”

The day she died, a box of strawberries showed up at my house—and at every other woman's house in the family. Because she was sending us all early Valentine's Day gifts. They came on the day she died. It was a sign. It still has an effect on me. It took me three months to get back on stage after that.

When I finally got back on stage, it was sad. You could feel the pity wheel. And what sucks is that I shared the stage with some gospel heavy hitters, like Canton Jones and Darlene McCoy. I was still coming out of this grief, and I'm sharing the stage with these people, and they don't even know how funny I am. Because I suck! So, it took a hot minute to get back on my feet. That was my rough patch in comedy. I can definitely say that 2014 was a very rough year for me as an entertainer. > >

Paula: The theme of my television show is juggling this journey called life, while we're walking in our gifts and talents. Sometimes you have to hit the pause button, or even the stop button, because of life's happenings. But in the process of living, there's always a lesson that's learned. There's something important that you take away from that experience. So I’m glad you shared about that.

Jessica: Thank you. Yes. I do not shy away from too much. There are plenty of things I've said— not on stage, but that I've said in real life, in the car, in certain situations. I do believe that my comedy is my gift. And when I'm on stage, I take that very seriously. People say it's so hard to do clean comedy. For me, it's the opposite.

Going through some of the things I've gone through. You'll have some of these awful moments going on in the background of your life, but you have to get on stage.

Now, I do have this amazing ability of taking to heart—what's that phrase?—The show must go on! Even when you're thinking, “Oh my God! As much as I love the stage, I don't even want to be on stage right now. I don't know who I'm going to be when I get up there. Am I going to get through it?” But I always come through.

Paula: You continue to flourish. That's the inspiring thing I want our readers to understand. As we go through life, like you said, when you can get up there, the show must go on! All hell may be breaking loose inside of you. But when you present, you present your brand. You present the passion.

You present the talent.

What do you feel your purpose is in what you do? What is it that you want to leave with people?

Jessica: Light. Light and positivity.

I decided at twelve years old, “I'm going to be an entertainer. I’m going to be an actor.” But it was at the age of fifteen that I realized that I had something to say, and it was powerful.

Now that I'm older and I see some of the hard things that we've been through—simply as a society—the things that people come up and say after shows makes me realize that I am on this planet to spread positivity. Light.

I am in this world to bring people joy in hard times.

I've had people come up afterwards and say, “We were at a funeral earlier today. We are so glad we came to the show.” Once, I had a woman come to me and say, “My husband passed a year ago, and I haven't laughed until today. This is my first time laughing in a year!”

I even had one event where I was DJing. A bunch of kids were there who probably weren't supposed to be there. And I catered to them because, as a former teacher and kids’ party entertainer, I love kids. I wanted them to have fun too. The father of one of the girls came up to me and said, “I just want to thank you for helping my daughter and her friends celebrate. We're having a sweet fifteen because I won't be here for her sweet sixteen.”

He had terminal cancer, and he knew he was going to be gone by the next year. In his last few days on this planet, he was grateful for the entertainment.

Those are the moments when you try not to cry. What do you say? Moments like that—they are bigger than the paycheck, bigger than just telling a joke. I’m bringing light to this planet through my personality. It can be hard to still remain joyful and to be light; but it's something I cannot even avoid myself. I have to bring light and positivity into this world— because people need it.

Paula: People need it. And you need it as well.

Jessica: Yes, I need it too! Can I share something? The year 2020—during the pandemic—that was a rough time for me. I learned how much I wasn't that "essential." I was completely out of work for about three months. We were all sitting at home trying to figure out what to do. So one thing I finally started to do was Quarantine Karaoke. >

Jessica, continued: I put up party lights, sang random karaoke songs, and tried to get people to come online and sing. It was so silly, so random. But it became a thing that people started looking forward to. That was something that helped keep me going. I definitely hit a dark place with some depression. I remember I had a neighbor whose husband had passed.

They were both in their eighties. A White couple. And sometimes older folks—especially of certain backgrounds—might not always be the best towards us, if you know what I mean.

Paula: I do.

Jessica: I decided to get to know her family a little bit. And with her being eighty-four years old, she was isolated, and going through a lot.

We had to be careful around her because of covid-19. But I ended up talking to her daughter about her upcoming birthday. I mentioned that I could play some music. She loves Prince. She loves Elton John. So I set up a speaker in my garage and faced it towards her house. I put a microphone at the end of her driveway, and then I was running around with my own microphone—and my boa, adding to the fun.

Her family would come up and say things into the mic. I had hit one of my darkest places just the day before. But something about doing this for her and her family brought my light back. I thought to myself, “I have to do this, even if I can't get paid for it. Because we're in a pandemic. And I'm not driving a truck—or saving people with toilet paper and food. So I have to do this. I have to find a way to do this.”

I still have these moments, where I ask myself, “Should I have done something smarter? Like go to school to be a doctor?” Sometimes—for people who are artists, like me—we can put ourselves down. And other people will help you with that. And get you down.

But I’ve realized that there is nothing else I'm supposed to be doing. This is it. So, it’s even for myself. I need to bring light to others so I can bring that light and joy back to myself.

Paula: Is there anything else that you'd like to say to our readers?

Jessica: I’m just throwing it out there: I do plan to be famous one day. As long as I have time left on this planet, I hope that I get to a point where I do become a national voice of positivity. And maybe international.

However, sometimes when people get up there, things happen. And I know that it's hard to fathom what that journey is—until you get there. But no matter what, I want to try to stay as positive and joyful as I can—even when I'm in a place where it might be harder to do that because of the pressures that come with it. I have promised a lot of people VIP tickets when I get there. And I'm thinking now, I probably should have made a list or something!

Paula: You should probably start that list.

Jessica: Yeah, I’ll figure something out! Life is short, and sometimes you don't always get what you plan to get. But one thing I can say is I know I've touched a lot of people. If this were my last day on this planet, I know I have done my job. And I'm going to keep doing it as long as I'm here—for as many people as I can. <

he had just returned from Iceland, the land of fire and ice, just before the rumblings beneath the Earth erupted into a volcanic spectacle. Andrea Wright— an advocate for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education—had not only witnessed the breathtaking landscapes but had also embarked on a unique adventure aboard the JOIDES Resolution ocean-drilling research vessel.

Andrea's journey is a story of exploration and discovery, as she continues her unwavering commitment to transforming STEM education.

As the STEM Coordinator for the third-largest school district in Georgia, Andrea Wright's passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is evident in every aspect of her life. A proud native of Atlanta, she is a Spelman College alumna, with a Bachelor of Arts, complemented by degrees and certifications from prestigious institutions such as the University of Rhode Island, the University of West Georgia, and Valdosta State University.

Andrea holds a STEM Leadership endorsement from the NASA Endeavor program, as well as a STEM endorsement from Middle Georgia’s Regional Educational Service Agency. She also proudly wears the badge of a National Geographic Certified Educator. Last year, she was recognized as one of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association's Emerging Leaders. Not only that, she was named among the ten rising K–12 Information Technology stars by EdTech Magazine.

Let me preface this exploration of self care with a universal truth: There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Each person's journey is unique, and whatever you're going through, whether monumental or minuscule, is valid. And it deserves acknowledgment.

For years, I engaged in conversations about self care, sharing advice to women around the world.

If “fake it till you make it" was a lifestyle in self care, I’d be the poster child. For years, I’d organized self care months, invited inspiring speakers, and surrounded myself with empowering friends—all the while neglecting the very essence of self care in my own personal life.

I found myself in a cycle of sleepless nights, navigating through the fog of high-functioning depression—stress-eating my way through challenges. I actually embodied the antithesis of the essence of self care.

After hitting a brick wall mentally in August, I finally acknowledged this dissonance in my life, and decided to embark on a journey of self care wisdom. It transcended the conventional definitions. Instead of adhering to a strict regimen, I'm discovering the beauty of embracing all sorts of self care, each contributing to a positive outlook and holistic well-being. There’s no New Year resolution for self care. You start where you start, when you start. Nevertheless I would encourage you to let that be right now. I want to share with you some of what I’ve taught, and also what I’ve started to learn and apply.

PHYSICAL SELF CARE: BEYOND THE GYM Physical self care is often associated with rigorous exercise routines and strict diets.

While these are undoubtedly beneficial, I learned that physical well-being extends beyond the confines of the gym. A simple walk in nature, a dance in the living room, or a gentle yoga session became my expressions of physical self-love. Positivity blossomed as I embraced movement in a way that felt nurturing and joyful.

EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE: HONORING FEELINGS Rather than suppressing emotions, I learned to honor and process them. Journaling, therapy, and conversations with loved ones became my tools for emotional self care. Positivity emerged as I embraced vulnerability, understanding that expressing and navigating emotions is an integral part of a healthy and positive life. >

MENTAL AGILITY: PLAYFUL LEARNING The concept of mental self care took a turn from daunting tasks to playful learning.

Instead of overwhelming myself with information, I found joy in exploring topics that sparked curiosity. Engaging in hobbies, reading for pleasure, and solving puzzles became my mental self-care rituals. Positivity flowed as I allowed my mind to wander freely and indulge in the pleasures of intellectual exploration.

FINANCIAL WELLNESS: SMALL STEPS, BIG IMPACT The realm of financial self care need not be overwhelming. Instead of fixating on grandiose financial goals, I focused on small, practical steps—creating a budget, saving a little each month and making informed financial decisions. I’d recovered from financial instability once before, and I knew I could do it again—focusing on what I could do regarding rebuilding my credit and financial portfolio.

SOCIAL CONNECTIONS: QUALITY OVER QUANTITY In the pursuit of social self care, I shifted my focus from the quantity of connections to the quality of relationships. Nurturing meaningful connections and setting boundaries became my priority. Positivity thrived as I surrounded myself with a supportive network that uplifted and encouraged my personal growth.

Whatever form it takes, the positivity that arises from embracing self care in its myriad expressions is transformative.
