FLO'S MAG Stockists

46

Are you feeling festive yet? You will be by the time you’ve read this issue! The cover alone makes me want to put on a snood and break out into a Christmas carol. My vision for FLO’S MAG has always been about ‘living a good life’, whatever that means to you. We are all different, take what you need – inspiration, contacts, ideas. Heck, cut it up and use it to collage some Christmas cards if you like (just make sure you send me some photos). This magazine is YOURS. I have tried to make the pages ‘come to life’ as much as possible. I love to imagine readers scanning the QR code to listen to the playlist, taking some time out to ponder the journalling questions, doing the DIY activity and making the recipe. Get stuck in, it’s a feast for all the senses. During November and December make Flo your go-to for Christmas shopping. Come and see us at FLO’S MARKET (in Portchester Precinct on 14th November and 12th December) and/or FLO’S POP-UP @ The Courtyard in Fareham Shopping Centre (read all about this new venture on pages 10-11). We’ve changed the way we distribute slightly, we now have official stockists, yay! I will still be out exploring and distributing by hand, but having these stockists is a big help. Another thing that’s a big help is when readers spread the word. Why not have a think about who you know who would love FLO’S MAG and grab them a copy? It’s thoughtful, it’s free and it’s all part of the ecosystem that is Flo. Happy Chrimbo y’all!

P.S. If you’re a fan of FLO’S MAG and would like to show your appreciation, why not use the QR code to buy me a (virtual) coffee, I would love that.

Best Bar IN HAMPSHIRE & ISLE OF WIGHT 2026 MUDDY STILETTOS AWARDS

Tiny Bar Big Spirit 4

We love small businesses with heart and soul, and for this issue's festive tip we're pointing you in the direction of Southsea Spirit, a ‘neighbourhood bar’ on Albert Road run by sisters Harriet and Charlotte. This dynamic duo started out in 2020 with a mobile bar, The Gin Emporium, serving weddings, festivals and celebrations. In 2021, one bottled cocktail recipe became Southsea Spirit Tropical Gin. That single spirit turned into the foundation for something bigger, and in 2023 they found their tiny bar and made it home. The sisters believe the best neighbourhood bars grow through collaboration, not in isolation. Workshops, tiny markets, pop-ups and community events are all part of the mix, and they're always dreaming up new ways to bring people together.

"Southsea is full of brilliant independents," they say. "People here really make an effort to support local. There's a real sense that everyone wants to see each other do well, and we love being part of that." Christmas is their favourite time of year, and this festive season you can expect DJs, workshops, their monthly quiz night and a few pop-ups (follow their socials for details). New for this year are Tiny Christmas Parties: proper Christmas dos, just on a smaller scale, for small teams, independents, freelancers and friendship groups.

When Light Becomes Art How stained glass can bring colour, light and your own story into the home BY JO MUNFORD

6

Follow me ● Instagram.com/seaview-studio ● Facebook.com/seaview.studio.design There is something magical about stained glass. Perhaps it is the way sunlight transforms colour, casting ever-changing patterns across a room, or the way a beautiful window can tell a story without saying a word. Unlike many forms of art, stained glass changes throughout the day and the seasons, coming alive as the light moves across it.

saints, historical events and the lives of their patrons. Today, stained glass can tell much more personal stories. A love of gardening might inspire a botanical design. A favourite animal or bird, place or pastime

For Jo Munford of Seaview Studio,

can become the starting point for a window or sculpture. Architecture and the interior can influence the design, colours and concept of a piece. Words or hidden messages

this combination of art, light and craftsmanship is at the heart of everything she creates.

that hold a special meaning for the client can also be incorporated. The possibilities are limitless.

Based in Netley, Jo designs and makes contemporary stained-glass windows, panels, sculptures and works of art, working closely with clients to create pieces that are unique.

“People often have a vague idea of what they would like, but don't necessarily know how that can translate into glass,” says Jo. “I love taking those initial ideas and digging deeper to turn them into something completely personal.”

The tradition of stained glass has long been associated with storytelling. Historically, windows were used to depict biblical stories,

Jo's own design background plays an important part in this process. Originally trained in textile design,

she later worked as an interior designer in the marine industry before establishing Seaview Studio. Her understanding of colour, pattern, materials and interiors is combined with traditional stainedglass techniques and years of hands-on experience. The result is work that is designed not simply to fill a space, but to become part of it. And while creating a complex stained-glass commission requires years of training, practice and experience, Jo also believes there is great pleasure in simply discovering the craft for yourself. This winter, Seaview Studio is offering stained-glass courses introducing the basics of copper foil and leadlight techniques. A chance to work with glass, learn new skills and enjoy the satisfaction of creating something you made with your own hands and can take home.

Saturday 7th Nov & Thursday 3rd Dec Make a Christmas tealight or suncatcher using copper foil technique. Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th January Traditional Stained Glass leadlight course.

Gosport Girl BY CATT BURLAND

For this issue we invited 'Gosport Girl' Cat Burland to contribute with what local independent and arty things she's loving at the moment. I have been enjoying the change in seasons, wrapping up and slowing down for winter. My husband and I have been enjoying art classes hosted by Rich Oakes at The Hoppy Bull Bars, they’re a great way to spend an evening - roaring fire, real ale, and getting creative. I love our beautiful area, I cycle the beautiful scenic routes where Queen Victoria once enjoyed a private train. The coast is inspiration for the moving seascapes of artist Jackie Boggeln, and I always enjoy the fundraising Christmas Tree Festival at St. Mary's Alverstoke, a short walk from Stokes Bay. This winter I'm looking forward to gift shopping with Stoke Road’s independent traders, there’s something for everyone (and plenty on my own wish list). I enjoy an eclectic rummage at Stoke Road Emporium, or Miss Dolittle's independent boutique charity shop, or planning the next treat or project at KatieAnnDesigns jewellery; always a friendly welcome. A must for a cosy and nostalgic trip is Dolly's Vintage Tea Rooms, for tea and cake, which provides

inspiration for Flamingood Crafts found opposite who provide a whole host of crafty workshops. Or Woolly Warriors, an inclusive knitting and crochet community; found at the museum, alongside a host of treasures from local artists, and exhibits of international renown; including my new favourite merchandise from Hill Head Gallery. It’s my birthday near Christmas and I've been fortunate to have been gifted Bricksy artworks in years past. If you would like to enjoy their very special brand of Lego art, check out the Bricksy Trail created with the brilliant Level Up Gosport (and Mr Dot), providing real life work opportunities for local young people. As for eating out, I hope to try Lizz Turkish restaurant after hearing rave reviews! The Lightship is also a stunning occasion venue, and we have a tradition of delicious birthday breakfasts at Katie's Vinyl Bar & Kitchen. I can't wait to see what FLO'S MAG, CIRCLE and MARKETS have to offer next year!!

On the bucket list for workshops next year (often discovered through FLO'S MAG!) are collage at Port and Lemon, pottery with Potts Pottery, calligraphy with Lettering By The Sea, macrame making with Driftwood and Twine + Wat's On Glass fused glass workshops.

s ’ o l F Pop-up @ THE COURTYARD

**NEW FOR 2026!**

We're delighted that our community of independent makers and artisan producers will be popping up in 'The Courtyard' unit at Fareham Shopping Centre, every Saturday and Sunday throughout November and December. The initiative is being supported by Fareham Borough Council and Fareham Shopping Centre as part of wider efforts to encourage footfall and create fresh reasons to visit Fareham town centre. No two days will be the same at FLO’S POP-UP, there will be different traders every weekend, plus festive workshops to take part in. See page 2 for opening days/times. Councillor Ian Bastable, Deputy Leader of Fareham Borough Council, said: “We’re delighted to support FLO’S POP-UP @ The Courtyard and welcome another exciting use for a vacant town centre unit. It’s exactly the kind of creative and flexible use that helps bring vibrancy and activity into our town centre while longer-term regeneration plans continue to progress.” Come and meet the makers and shop local this Christmas.

Learning to thrive one breath at a time Have you ever stopped to notice how you breathe? Breathing is automatic, but breathing well is a skill.

chronic stress responses, and retrain their nervous system for lasting resilience.

On average, we breathe 20,000 times a day, yet few realise how stress shapes every breath. In the UK, approximately 10% of us have habitual breathing dysfunction, a figure that leaps to 75% for those with diagnosed stress or anxiety disorders.

Take a moment right now and pause. Take three slow, deep breaths, and notice how your body feels. Was there resistance? Did you struggle to take a full breath? If so, then maybe breathwork is the solution you're looking for.

When we experience stress, rapid chest breathing sends danger signals to the brain, spiking cortisol and keeping our bodies trapped in high alert. After being diagnosed with high functioning burnout and anxiety, I started dabbling in breathwork to support my nervous system and by 2025, I had invested in professional breathwork coaching, and it genuinely changed my life. I started sleeping better, managing my anxiety, and stopped holding my breath during moments of extreme stress. Most noticeably, I learned to breathe diaphragmatically through my nose, eliminating chronic upper chest breathing and transforming my health and wellbeing. I was so blown away, I have retrained as a CPCAB Breathwork Coach and now I get to help others identify hidden dysfunctions, unlearn

12

If you are ready to manage stress, improve sleep, regulate your nervous system and regain your energy, get in touch to discover how breathwork coaching can help you or your team learn to thrive one breath at a time. Much love, Lis x

We did something a little different for the playlist this time, we asked our community for their festive favourites. My choice was Home to You (This Christmas) by Sigrid. I belt that out like no one's business during December. My favourite contribution was White Wine in the Sun by Tim Minchin, contributed by Gosport-based artist Chris Bayliss. TUNE! I didn’t know about it before but it’ll definitely be played a lot in my house this year. I love the idea of readers listening to this playlist as they baste their turkey and wrap their gifts this year. Helen, Editor x

Action Man Could he be Gosport’s Mr Motivator? Or the south coast’s answer to Joe Wicks? We just know Chris Langrish is doing really positive work within his local community.

Why did you set up the group?

How do readers get involved?

To bring people together. I started it up during Covid, suggesting challenges people could do at home. Then after restrictions were lifted, I was keen to get people mixing again, using sea swimming/ dipping as a way of bringing people together and making new friends.

Join the Facebook group! It’s called Thrive.

Hi Chris! What is Thrive?

Seeing others achieve amazing things. We had an 80-year-old woman who started just watching, got into the water, and just a few weeks ago swam for charity. A woman from the group swam the Channel, and a group of ladies who swam a mile for the first time. I’ve taken groups of people up Snowdon and seeing their excited faces at what they’ve achieved is incredible. I have helped hundreds of people get into the cold water in the winter months. I absolutely love it.

Thrive is a Facebook group that brings people together to achieve things they never thought possible, such as cold sea dips, 5k runs and climbing mountains. Do you run regular events? We run a regular Saturday morning sea dip at 9am at Lee-on-theSolent (meet at Monks Hill Car Park). We also do a run and sea dip every Sunday morning at 8am at the same place.

Helping Your Child Find Their Path Nothing matters more to a parent than their child’s happiness. And for career coach Karen Lomas, nothing beats the moment a parent tells her she's made a difference.

she's a highly experienced careers adviser for both private clients and schools. She brings a unique blend of commercial and education sector experience.

Karen helps young people find their footing in the world of work, building careers that are fulfilling, rewarding and truly their own. Her goal is selfreliant, resilient, creative and brave adults. It's personal, too: her two daughters are thriving in PR and film editing, and she couldn't be prouder. Having guided them through their senior school years, she knows how stressful it is for parents to watch their children navigate life's big changes in a job market that can feel alien to older generations.

How it works: Private clients meet Karen for 60 to 90 minutes, either at her home office (in Emsworth) or online. They discuss their background, interests, grades and ideas, sometimes alongside a Morrisby assessment. By the end, they'll have agreed a clear next step, with a follow-up session to keep things moving. It's simple, effective and rewarding for both Karen and her clients.

Karen went into her first career (in business management) with little career guidance, only changing course after asking herself what really mattered. Seventeen years, plenty of study, and lots of volunteering and work experience later,

She's a licensed, accredited Morrisby Online Career Assessment practitioner, widely considered one of the best careers tools around, and is equally at home with Unifrog, the Strong Interest Inventory and the MBTI.

Her favourite moments? When a disengaged student or a demoralised career changer identifies real options and sees their efforts pay off. Cue the high-fives. If you or your child is struggling with career decisions, get in touch with Karen.

Christmas: love or hate?

Are you a lover or a hater? In my family I am renowned for not being a fan of the festivities, but over recent years I’ve found myself warming to it. It’s my birthday on 23rd December, and my son’s on 14th December so everything gets a bit blurred (including my eyes when I look at my bank balance). As we know, I like paper, but the mash up of birthday and Christmas cards taking over our tiny lounge is a bit much. Not that I’m not grateful. As a child I think I felt torn at Christmas, between divorced parents and separate families. It felt like there were so many people to keep happy. Now, as I prepare to turn 47 and my son turns 11, there are less people to keep happy. I have no grandparents around now, or indeed parents, there are no care home Christmas lunches or bombing down the A27 to see granny in Eastbourne. I guess I’m the adult now, and my son’s the one who probably feels torn. And such is life; beautiful and real. I find joy in the kids, the matching pyjamas from Lidl, the walks, the get-togethers with friends and family because we want to, not because we feel obliged. I always enjoy scrambled eggs with smoked salmon on Christmas Day, and every year I wonder why I don’t have it more often. Have a good one y’all, and remember, it’s not all as it appears on Instagram. Helen, Editor x

Cover Star Fareham-based artist Emma Trickle provided our cosy, festive front cover for this issue. The scene is West Street in New Alresford which was Emma’s home town for more than 30 years. “It is always beautifully decorated at Christmas time," says Emma.

Emma studied art at college and photography at university, but didn’t pick up a paintbrush again until several years after graduating. Since university she has worked in community pharmacy for most of the last 20 years, previously in

Alresford, and now in Titchfield.

After the Covid pandemic she made the decision to move to Fareham and give herself the chance to rediscover her creative side. Emma works mostly in acrylic paint, a medium that she finds allows for flexibility and precision. She particularly enjoys painting her lifelong passion – cars and motorsport, along with wildlife, and night scenes. Since moving to Fareham Emma has joined the Fareham Art Group committee, and Gosport art ● poshbirdpaints.co.uk

She has won a number of prizes as part of Fareham Art Group, and exhibited at their annual exhibition, as well as the Titchfield Art & Craft Show and in Two for Joy Gallery. She has also previously taken part in Hampshire Open Studios and events at Fort Brockhurst and Yellow Edge Gallery. Balance your Nervous System

WITH ANNA WARDLEY

FLO’S MAG editor Helen was invited along to experience a TRE® session.

TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a simple, body-based practice that supports the release of stress and physical tension through our natural neurogenic tremor response. The exercises are gentle and self-paced, supporting nervous system regulation, greater body awareness and a deeper sense of calm and balance. “I truly believe ‘the body holds the score’, so when Anna invited me to release some long-held stress/trauma/tension, I was there like a shot! I was amazed to discover that my body instinctively knew how to ‘involuntarily shake’, releasing what was ‘stuck’ naturally and effortlessly, just like an animal in the wild.” "You leave with knowledge (and paperwork) to enable you to practice at home... for free!”

Anna offers 1:1 and group TRE sessions in Gosport, Lee-on-the Solent and online.

Christmas – the season for Crafting!

DIY Feature

BY JAIME BRIDGES

If there’s one thing we all deserve at Christmas, it’s a moment of calm, and a chance to enjoy some festive creativity. Whether you’re crafting with kids, catching up with friends over mulled wine, or just taking ten minutes for yourself, these festive lanterns are something ANYONE can do. You do not need to be creative or have lots of supplies or materials stashed. They’re quick, they’re beautiful, and use something you probably already have tucked in a drawer — those stunning Christmas napkins you bought but were too pretty to use! This is crafting at its easiest but with maximum creative charm: no special tools, no mess, no stress. Just a recycled jar, a bit of glue, and a napkin design you love.

How to Make Your Festive Lantern YOU'LL NEED:

INSTRUCTIONS:

• A clean glass jar

eparate the napkin layers. Peel away the plain backing so you’re left with S the thin, patterned top layer.

• PVA glue or Mod Podge • Paintbrush or sponge

Brush glue onto the jar - a thin, even coat is all you need.

• A decorative Christmas napkin (tissue paper works well too)

Apply the napkin - gently press the patterned napkin onto the jar. It will wrinkle slightly, and that’s part of the charm — it gives a soft, frosted look when lit.

• Scissors • Battery tealight or candle

For more Christmas crafts and indeed year-round crafts head to The Makers' House in Fareham!

eal it - brush a final layer of glue over the top to protect the design and give S a glossy finish. Add ribbon or twine -a simple bow around the neck of the jar will finish it off perfectly. Or you could write names on tags and turn them into personalised place settings. Add in a battery candle or tealight for a warm, cosy glow. For a bit more sparkle why not add a sprinkle of glitter while the glue is wet.

Ideas Worth Spreading, Right on Our Doorstep TEDxGosport is a non-profit event with the ‘X’ meaning ‘independently organised’. The licence holder for Gosport is Annelies James, a small business owner who helps people communicate ideas that matter through her marketing and videography company, 22 Midnight. She's well known locally for her passion for community, and it showed. For the second year running, Annelies curated the event and led a committed team of volunteers and sponsors to bring it to life. Where last year's theme was ‘storytelling’, this year's was ‘connection’. FLO'S MAG editor Helen went along and was struck by the energy in the room; the care that had gone into honing each talk, the camaraderie among the speakers and the warmth of the atmosphere throughout the day. "It was a beautiful day in so many ways," says Helen. "From the gorgeous waterside setting of Gosport Activity Centre to the delicious Caribbean lunch from Natty's Jerk, and the chance to network in such a high-energy atmosphere." We encourage you to ponder and journal on the following questions inspired by each of the 2026 speakers. Talks can be watched by scanning the QR code opposite.

Recipe By Terri Brewster, Gifts from the Pantry

Christmas Plum Chutney Ingredients: 1kg black plums 300g Bramley apples 300g onions 2 large garlic cloves 1 heaped tablespoon freshly grated ginger 1 cinnamon stick 1 teaspoon ground allspice 1 teaspoon ground cloves ½ teaspoon ground ginger

Gifts from the Pantry is a regular trader at FLO’S MARKETS. Come and stock up for Christmas at FLO’S MARKET in Portchester Precinct on 14th November/12th December 10am-3pm

½ teaspoon dried crushed chilli 600ml cider vinegar 500g light brown sugar Salt and ground black pepper

It was June 2002 when I registered my kitchen with Fareham Borough Council and the rest, as they say, is history. Choosing to make my preserves seasonally and where possible with local ingredients I relish the changes that nature brings. Moving on from the sweet summer berries to the aromas of cinnamon, cloves and my favourite - allspice berries – freshly ground in preparation for festive fayre. After all, who doesn’t love a range of chutneys and pickles to complement their Boxing Day feast of cold cuts, cheeseboards and crusty bread?

Method: 1. Cut the plums in half and remove all the stones, place them into a large preserving pan. 2. Peel and finely dice the onions and garlic. 3. Peel and core the apples then slice and stir in to the pan along with the onions and plums. 4. Add all the remaining ingredients along with 1 teaspoon of salt and a good grinding of black pepper. 5. Slowly bring to the boil, giving a stir every now and again so the sugar dissolves without catching on the bottom of the pan.

6. Reduce the heat and simmer for at least an hour until the mixture has thickened and if you run a wooden spoon along the bottom of the pan it leaves a path. 7. Turn off heat and allow to stand for a minute or two before pouring into warmed and sterilised jars, covering immediately. 8. Leave to cool. Store in a cool, dark place (for ideally two months) before enjoying or gifting.

We now have official stockists! For the last two years I have accepted an obscene amount of boxes from the printer and distributed every single copy by hand (with the help of my trusty trolley). I have held on to this because I enjoy the pavement pounding, the chats, the coffee breaks, the new places I discover. I will still continue to do this to a certain extent but having these wonderful independent stockists on board takes the pressure off and eases my workload. Requests from new stockists (and volunteer distributors) are gratefully received. Helen, Editor x
