1st Year

We celebrate the first year of BRASILKITE&WING with great joy!

Our journey began in Florianópolis as FLORIPAKITE LIFESTYLE and, over time, we expanded our horizons. Last year, we explored the Northeast of Brazil, holding editions in Ceará and an exciting Downwind between Ceará, Piauí and Maranhão. With the growth of Wing Foil, we evolved into BRASILKITE&WING, reflecting our commitment to covering the different modalities of the sport.

This special anniversary edition takes us back to Santa Catarina, highlighting the beauties and stories of Florianópolis and Ibiraquera. We interviewed incredible riders, all united by their passion for Kitesurfing. Dr. Marcos Dias, member of our Board, led enriching conversations with Doctors Joel Steinman and Artur Herdy about Health and Kitesurfing.

Our team conducted several memorable interviews. In Ibiraquera, we spoke with the three-time KiteWave world champion, Guilly Brandão, the Frenchman Yann Rifflet, the entrepreneur Jalila Paulino, and the talented photographer and filmmaker Jack Imagens. In Florianópolis, KiteWave world champion, Aian Kitesurf, shared an impressive video of an accident he suffered in Indonesia, a real scare!

We also spoke to Victor Pimpows, Douglas Juliani and his father Paulo Juliani, who at 66, is preparing to sail in Pacasmayo, Peru. Diego Rodrigues from Ocean Riders Kitesurf told us about the KiteCamp that will be held at Praia do Preá, in August, in partnership with Fernando from Kitecenter Brasil, from Ibiraquera. Set Teixeira, an athlete from Cumbuco, Ceará, visited Floripa and shared his sailing experiences around the world.

The Kitegirls, led by the enthusiast Ale Kite, were present in Floripa during the summer, Riozinho was ON, with incredible recordings by photographer James Thisted. In the KiteFashion section, the Lennox brand, 100% Kite, shone with models Carina Kindermann and Elias Zanon, in a shoot photographed by me and filmmaker Igor Viegas.

Health and Wellbeing Lessons from Kitesurfing and Wing Foil

Joel shared with us some of the key health and wellness lessons he covers in his book, highlighting the importance of training and fitness to prevent injuries and maximize performance. He highlighted that although injuries in kitesurfing are not as frequent as in surfing, it is crucial to understand when, where and how athletes get injured to prevent incidents.

Understanding the biomechanics of kitesurfing is essential to mastering acrobatic maneuvers and landings, especially due to the rotations involved. Controlling these rotational landings is essential to avoid sprains and spinal injuries. Therefore, physical preparation, including strength, stretching, coordination and balance, is crucial for exercisers.

Injury Prevention

In an approach focused on injury prevention, Dr. Steinman discusses the technological evolution of Kitesurfing and its impact on reducing traumatic injuries. It highlights the importance of proper training, technique improvement and safety awareness, especially in relation to the aquatic environment and weather conditions.

Cardiovascular health: regular monitoring for athletes of all ages.

Health

Water healing: a day at KiteSurfing can rejuvenate body, mind and spirit.

Medical and Preventive Care

In addition to physical training, Joel empha sized the importance of medical and preventive care. He highlighted the need for accurate diag nosis to guide injury rehabilitation, including imaging tests such as CT and MRI. Sports physio therapy plays a crucial role in the recovery of injured athletes.

Joel also praised the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) for its commitment to the care and development of athletes, especially in Kite surfing. He emphasized the importance of regular heart exams, especially for older athletes, and encouraged the prevention of colorectal cancer through healthy eating habits and preventive screenings.

The Legend of the Three-Time KiteWave World Champion: The Journey of Guilly Brandão

BRASILKITE&WING had the honor of interviewing Guilly Brandão, three-time KiteWave world champion, in a conversation held at his home in Ibiraquera, SC.

Conducted by Pedro from 048Filmes, the interview revealed Guilly's inspiring journey in the world of sport, from his first experiences to his international achievements and his current transition into coaching.

Guilly with his son Bento

Start of the Journey

Guilly Brandão began his sporting career together with the emergence of Kitesurfing in Brazil. Initially, he played several sports and had a passion for surfing, but the uncertainty about the possibility of a professional career in surfing made him hesitant. It was then that Kite appeared as a new opportunity, an exciting and still growing sport in the country.

"I saw Kite as a second chance for me, because I played sport my whole life and after a certain age I fell in love with surfing", remembers Guilly.

The First Victory

After a year of intense training, Guilly decided to compete on the Brazilian Kite circuit. Although he did not win any individual stages, his consistency throughout the year saw him win the national title. This victory was the sign he needed to dedicate himself completely to the sport.

"The first year I competed, I won the Brazilian circuit.

I was the most consistent during the year and won the tour"

Rise in KiteWave

Guilly competed in freestyle for five years before falling in love with KiteWave, which combined his passion for surfing with Kite. He quickly stood out in this new modality, winning his first KiteWave world championship in Fortaleza.

"I jumped into KiteWave, dedicated myself for a year or two and in the first year I gained the world cup in Fortaleza"

World Achievements

Dedication to KiteWave has paid o . Guilly won three world championships, establishing himself as a legend in the sport. His ability to combine surfing technique with kite handling set him apart from other competitors.

"I won two more KiteWave world titles, one in Chile and the last one in 2010, which had several stages, including Morocco, Australia, Peru and Hawaii", says the three-time champion.

Transition to Coaching

After retiring from competitions in 2013, Guilly began dedicating himself to coaching, helping new talents develop in the sport. He works with immersion programs, where athletes spend days training intensely, with filmed sessions and detailed technical analyses.

"I made my home in Ibiraquera and now I'm starting to welcome people to do coaching immersions here at home", says Guilly.

Evolution and Equipment

Guilly also spoke about the evolution of Kite equipment over the years and how this has made access to the sport easier. Currently, he uses Kites from the Core brand, Section model, which are specially designed for waves.

"The kites that I chose to ride and that I am sponsored are the Core Kites, Section model, which is a surreal kite for anyone who wants to surf", highlights Guilly.

The Future with Wing Foil

In addition to Kite, Guilly is exploring the world of Wing and Foil, new modalities that have brought a revolution to water sports. He especially appreciates the range the Wing o ers for riding waves in a variety of conditions.

"The Foil is a revolution in board sports. It adds a very high level of sensitivity, challenging and motivating you to learn something new from scratch", he comments.

Guilly Brandão's trajectory is a source of inspiration for many. His passion for the sport, combined with his determination and skill, took him to the top of the Wave kite world. Now, as a coach, he continues to impact the next generation of athletes by sharing his knowledge and experience.

Guilly notes that the KiteWave and Strapless FreeStyle has reached impressive levels that he didn't imagine when he started.

The best places for Kitesurfing and WingFoil, in Brazil and abroad.

The Brazilian Northeast is one of the best places in the world to practice these sports. “My, the best wind peak in the world,” he says, highlighting the coast of Terra do Vento, in Ceará, from São Miguel, in Rio Grande do Norte to Lençóis Maranhenses, as exceptional areas for these activities. Peru, especially Pacasmayo, is a favorite international destination, “a place that since the first time I went I said, oh, I'm going to have to come back here every year”.

About the evolution of Kite and its modalities

Guilly notes that KiteWave and Strapless FreeStyle have reached impressive levels, something he didn't imagine when he started. “It's really impressive to see what people are doing nowadays,” he comments, referring to the strapless maneuvers. He sees untapped potential in combining these maneuvers with wave riding, wanting to see more of this integration. “I would like to see more of this,” he says, encouraging innovation.

Endless Surf: A Downwind with exploration and adventure

The “Surfin Sem Fim” project, created by Marco Dalpo, o ers downwind experiences along the northeastern coast. “A totally di erent experience, it's practically another sport,” he says, describing how the adventure connects people and creates lasting friendships. “Most of the people who go on Trips together arrive completely strangers and leave best friends for life.”

Future projects

Guilly is excited about two projects in the works. The first is a virtual coaching club, o ering a package of services that includes video analysis, in-person coaching and discounts on equipment and accommodation. “From advice to choosing equipment or a KiteTrip you want to do,” he explains. The second is a physical club in Ibiraquera, o ering a complete structure for Kitesurfers, expected to open next season.

Inspirations and preparation

Inspired by athletes from di erent disciplines, he mentions Kelly Slater, Shaun White and Ayrton Senna as major influences. In terms of physical preparation, he emphasizes the importance of stretching and isometric training to balance the body. “I do a workout here at home, weights, and a little cross training with a bike running on the trail,” he details.

Advice for beginners

For those who are starting out in Kitesurfing, he recommends looking for a good Kite School and investing time practicing in the Northeast. “The learning curve when you go to Terra do Vento, there in the Northeast, is much steeper,” he advises, emphasizing the consistency of the winds and the ideal conditions for quick learning.

"Our virtual coaching club includes advice, video analysis and discounts on equipment."

"The new physical club in Ibirapuera will provide a complete structure for Kitesurfers."

Aian Kitesurf's Journey of Overcoming and Passion: From Humble Beginnings to Top of the World

On the peaceful shores of Lagoa da Conceição, in Florianópolis, SC, Tiago Schleiniger had the privilege of sitting down with renowned athlete Aian Kitesurf, master of kitesurfing and waves, for an in-depth conversation about his life, passions and the many battles that shaped his journey. In this exclusive interview, Aian shares not only his sporting achievements, but also the personal challenges and transformative experiences that led him to success.

Aian began his journey in the world of sport at the age of 8, driven by his parents' adventurous spirit. His passion for surfing led him to explore new frontiers, but it was kitesurfing that definitively captured his heart.

The transition to kitesurfing was not without challenges. Aian faced serious accidents, including a pancreas injury that almost took him out of the sport. However, his unwavering determination propelled him to overcome these obstacles and become one of the world's leading athletes in 2014, when he became World Champion in Morocco.

One of the most challenging moments of his journey was a serious accident in Indonesia, where he became entangled in the kite lines, facing extreme risks. This incident not only tested his mettle, but also forced him to rethink his approach to the sport, leading him to take additional safety and training measures.

Physical and nutritional preparation

Dr. Herdy discussed the importance of specific physical preparation for kitesurfing, including muscle strengthening, stretching and aerobic conditioning.

The View that Captures the Emotion of Water Sports in Ibiraquera

JACK

I m a g e n s

BrasilKite&Wing magazine had the pleasure of interviewing the talented photographer Jack Imagens, who stands out in the Kite Wave scene in Ibiraquera. In a relaxed conversation with photographer and editor Alex Mello, Jack shared his trajectory, experiences and passion for the work he does.

From the beginning, Jack has always been fascinated by images. "I was just starting out in images and there was a Foil in Riba Beach session going on, but without Wing at the time," he recalls.

He was invited to visit Ibiraquera and quickly fell in love with the sport and the dynamics of the radical maneuvers that Kite Wave provides. "It's kite surfing, so it's really fun, dynamic, lots of action, lots of radical maneuvers," he comments.

@jack_imagens

Believe and invest in your work, with quality and dedication, you can stand out.

I had an old notebook and when I discovered that I needed to shoot in RAW, my notebook wouldn't open the files

I started telling people that I'm not here to sell photos, I'm here to help people evolve

The practice of photographing Kitewave athletes is not just about capturing images; It is also an essential tool for the evolution of athletes.

"I started telling people that I'm not here to sell photos, I'm here to help people evolve.”

Images play a very important role in the athlete's evolution," explains Jack. He emphasizes that, without images, evolution is much longer and more di icult.

He also highlights how much videos are valued by athletes: "There are some who like photos to give that lie, there are others who like videos because they are more serious and want to evolve."

Jack's arrival in Ibiraquera revolutionized the local scene.

"When I arrived here there were no photographers, everyone went crazy. I started investing, changing equipment, getting better equipment so I could deliver a better product to people," says Jack, explaining how he managed to create a thriving market for kite wave photography in the region. Jack photographs and also lives intensely every moment with the athletes. "Every day I have happy moments, I follow all the people there who are with me. Everyone is looking for progress," he says.

HE IS SINISTER, A COMPLETELY LIMITLESS GUY WHO IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR NEW CHALLENGES! @fernandolife

Guilly Brandão in his backyard, in Ibira

This connection and understanding of the sport is evident when he talks about the enthusiasm he feels when capturing a perfect maneuver: "When I get it right I vibrate along with it, it gives me joy knowing that the guy did it."

Jack's presence in Ibiraquera not only helped the athletes evolve, but also contributed to the visibility and support of brands. “Many got even more support after I started working with them,” he reports.

Furthermore, he highlights the growth and acceptance of Wing among kite practitioners, a new modality that is gaining strength in the community.

Finally, Jack reflects on his journey and the impact of his work: "I know almost everyone, I separate everyone's images, I create each person's folder. People really respect my work."

His work goes beyond photography; it's about capturing the essence and passion of water sports in every click. In the world of photography, equipment can make the di erence between a good and an excellent capture. Jack, who started his photographic journey unpretentiously, now dreams big. "My dream would be a Canon fixed 600mm, the white one, of dreams.

Its optical quality is wonderful and I would definitely be able to get an incredible result."

He mentions, however, that for now, a more accessible and versatile set would make a big di erence: "A fixed 400mm would be good, I would start with that and a 2x extender to reach 800mm at f/5.6, then it would be a top piece of equipment. to work with a bizarre quality."

Jack's story is an example of resilience and passion. He shares how he swapped life as a store manager for a career in photography during the pandemic, using his layo to purchase his first piece of equipment: a T5i and a 70-300mm. "I had an old notebook, and when I discovered I needed to shoot in RAW, my notebook wouldn't open the files," he recalls, laughing. This forced him to adapt quickly, shooting in JPEG until he got a better computer. His luck began to change when he met Anselmo Döl, an experienced photographer who helped him with essential equipment. "He gave me lots of touches and even helped me with a tripod, which I needed for filming," says Jackson gratefully. The support of the community and partners who recognized his talent was crucial to his professional growth. "I found partners who helped me with equipment, like a drone. Today, things worked out, thank God."

I got partners who helped me with equipment, like a drone
Maurício Pedreira radicalizing in Ibira
This one of the whale was a photo that made me very happy because I had been trying to take this photo for a long time and it was di icult because I wanted to capture the moment of the guy sailing and the whale jumping.

On the technical side, Jack prefers simplicity and e ectiveness. "I use Lightroom for photo editing and Premiere for videos. I prefer dry cuts, without many transitions, to focus on maneuvers and important moments." He values clarity and precision in capturing and editing, reflecting his practical, straightforward approach to work.

For those who wish to follow in his footsteps, Jack o ers valuable advice: "Believe and invest in your work. Today, there is a lot of competition, but with quality and dedication, you can stand out." He emphasizes the importance of understanding the sport you are photographing in order to capture the right moments. "Have good equipment and take good care of it, because the environment is harsh on equipment."

Additionally, Jack recognizes the value of educational resources freely available on the internet. “The internet today has a lot of free content that can help you improve,” he says, encouraging new photographers to make the most of online tools.

Psychologist, specialist in Clinical Neuropsychology, Master in Psychology, PhD in Psychology and Post-doctorate in Psychology. She works in clinical, research and teaching. Line of Cognitive Psychology, Psychophysiology and Cognitive Neuroscience. Yoga and Meditation Instructor.

In previous editions we started with short articles describing the concept and effects of the flow state in sport. This state is characterized by harmony between the challenges of the task, the athlete's ability to perform it and the satisfaction in performing it (Csikszentmihályi & Nakamura, 2001). It is a state of immersion in which the task performed, the conditions of nature, the mind and the body become one: techniques and movements, wind speed, waves, weather, equipment used, mental state and motivation merge into a single state , in the flow.

When we're sailing, it's this flow immersion that we seek to achieve, isn't it? To feel that “clear mind” feeling and the experience of accomplishment. And whether this experience is an immersion in flow for a moment or in a specific maneuver or throughout the sport. We seek this immersion, we seek this experience of fulfillment and we feel the positive effects with the release of some hormones and neurotransmitters important for mental and physical health, such as: endorphins

(increases the feeling of well-being, pleasure and feeling of reward),serotonin (the wellknown “happiness hormone”, assists in emotional and cognitive regulation), dopamine (neurotransmitter that influences motivation and attention), glucagon (produced by the pancreas to stimulate the release of free fatty acids from adipose tissue and increase levels of blood glucose) and cortisol (aids in energy metabolism to break down triglycerides and proteins to create glucose for exercise).

The basis of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's model is that the state of flow is accessed when skills and challenges are elevated and in harmony to result in a quality experience. But to have these two aspects: high skills + high challenges and result in harmony is complex and even more complex to understand what the challenge is for you and your body at that moment.

Therefore, there is something that comes before flow. There are aspects involving the practice of sport that are essential

FLOW

It is a state of immersion in which the task performed, the conditions of nature, the mind and the body become one: techniques and movements, wind speed, waves, weather, equipment used, mental state and motivation merge into a single state , in the flow.

So that flow can be achieved in full. And these aspects must be constantly sought after, as they come before any flow immersion, they are: (1) safety, (2) physical and mental preparation (3) technique.

1 - Security: It is important to think about how to make sport safe. This involves getting to know your own body, your abilities and physical conditioning, and understanding the importance of safety techniques and equipment. How can you feel safer and still feel challenged in sport? Security and the feeling of feeling safe interferes with the way we regulate our emotions and our behavior.

2 - Physical and mental preparation: It involves understanding the sport and the chain of muscles that are most required, knowing your body and your mental state before, during and after the sporting activity. And here training stands out – be it training for the sport itself as well as complementary training that can promote cardiorespiratory conditioning, strengthening and stretching of muscles. It is important to feel physically and mentally prepared, as this will help

you train high skills + high challenges and result in harmony.

3 - Technique: It's about training the techniques over and over again, finding the movement in your body, feeling the immersion of the equipment with each movement performed and nature. By improving techniques, it is possible to find progress in challenges.

It is interesting to reflect on these three aspects: safety, physical and mental preparation and technique, as we do not always look carefully at everything they involve in practice. It is curious that I am writing about these three aspects here in this edition, after searching Pubmed, Science Direct and other academic databases (databases that index scientific articles), the keyword “kitesurf” “kitesurfing”. What I found when using these key words was the lack of studies on kitesurfing, and in what publications there are on kitesurfing, the majority were related to the safety aspect and highlighted the importance of physical and mental preparation and technique for reducing injuries. and increased performance.

To feel that feeling of 'clear mind' and the experience of achievement

So, if academically there has been discussion about safety, physical and mental preparation and technique in kitesurfing, it is pertinent to pay attention to these aspects in our sporting practice. We can reduce possible damages linked to sport and we can experience even more that feeling of “clear mind” and accomplishment.

A Brazilian study (Berneira, Domingues, Medeiros & Vaghetti, 2011) with kitesurfers found 73 injuries among all kitesurfer participants in the study, with sprains being the most common (35.6%) and the lower limbs being the most affected site (50%). .7%). The main cause of these lower limb injuries was maneuvering (57.5%), especially in conditions associated with very strong winds, loss of control over the Kite, on or near the beach and technical errors by the Kitesurfer. And the interesting thing is that this study showed that the high rate of injuries is associated with a short time spent practicing the sport. According to the authors (Berneira, Domingues, Medeiros & Vaghetti,2011)

“This high rate can be explained by the fact that the motor ability to practice kitesurfing requires a low level of physical capacity, aerobic and anaerobic resistance and muscular strength. Therefore, with little practice time, in initiation classes, the practitioner is already able to sail, regardless of their physical condition.“ In this study, the majority of kitesurfers (60%) also reported believing that kitesurfing can be performed with a low physical fitness level.

Another study carried out in Belgium (Bourgois, Boone, Callewaert, 2014) highlighted that aerobic and anaerobic metabolism contribute to the supply of energy in kitesurfing, and indicated the important role of physical conditioning in reducing damage from injuries. These authors mentioned that kitesurfing injuries are mainly acute, resulting from accidents or trauma with an overall injury rate of 5.9–7.0 injuries per 1,000 hours of non-competitive kitesurfing. The lower extremities were also highlighted as the main and most common site of injuries, followed by the upper extremities, trunk and head.

We seek this immersion, We seek this experience of achievement and we feel the positive effects with the release of some hormones and neurotransmitters important for mental and physical health.

In Steven Kotlen's book “Superhumans: how extreme athletes redefine the limits of the possible”, the author states that there are flow triggers, being external, internal, social and creative. And among these triggers, there is danger itself, activating the brain's amygdala associated with fear and reward. We seek danger and challenge to achieve reward. But to be something relevant it is necessary to tolerate, understand and enjoy this risk. In sport, we will look for novelty, challenge and complexity. However, a level of comfort is necessary within the “discomfort“, otherwise, our brain amygdala does not associate any reward in the task. Therefore, I reinforce here the importance of reflecting even more on safety, physical, mental and technical preparation, to seek the combination of high skills + high challenges and result in harmony, the state of flow. This may explain why flow is perceived as having high control but at the same time effortless, even when the difficulty of the task is high, it is literally a fluid task, which has safety, physical and mental and technical preparation.

The feeling of literally flying over water it's magic.

I believe Wing Foil will follow the steps of Kitesurf heading to the Olympics.

Yann began his career as a windsurf sailor in France, where the sport had been popular since his childhood. His transition to Wing Foil was natural, being drawn to the sensation of literally flying over water. He describes Wing Foil as the future of water sports, highlighting its magic and versatility.

Over the years, Yann has witnessed the evolution of equipment, from wings to boards, seeking a balance between di erent aspects of rigidity and area. Currently, his main equipment consists of a 47L board and a 4m

As for his arrival in Santa Catarina, Yann attributes this to the destination and the proximity of Ibiraquera to Florianópolis, where his father-in-law lived. He has witnessed the growth in popularity of water sports such as Windsurfing, KiteWave and Wing Foil in the region, driven by favorable winds and challenging waves.

Regarding the interaction between water sports, Yann highlights the friendly synergy between Windsurfing, Kitesurfing and Wing Foil, where everyone finds their space in the vast sea of Ibiraquera.

Asked about the future of wing foiling, Yann expresses optimism, predicting continued evolution of equipment to make the sport more accessible and popular. He believes that Wing foil could follow in the footsteps of Formula Kite towards the Olympics, given its growing popularity and modernity.
