As the lights come up on our 24th Season, we look forward to a bright future as we celebrate the magic of live theatre! We are extremely grateful to you, our loyal patrons and donors, who have stood by us during the turbulent times of the past year and a half. We thank our senior staff, board of directors, ensemble of artists and volunteers for their continuing hard work, never-ending optimism, and devotion. Because of our loyal supporters, we will emerge strong and ready to entertain, enrich, and delight Southwest Florida audiences.

The absence of theatre has taught us how important and how vital the performing arts are to this community. Like many theatre companies across the country, we have produced virtual offerings: readings, filmed productions, discussions, our 2021 Gala, and even classes while our indoor stages were darkened. We uncovered new avenues of creativity and innovation by engaging audiences with exciting performances, under the stars, on the banks of the Caloosahatchee. But we realize that nothing can replace the electric experience of live theatre together in the Historic Arcade and ArtStage Studio Theatres.

It’s been a long road since we closed our doors to the public in March 2020, but we are ready to lift the curtain and light the lights once again. Our 24th season is a new and vibrant celebration of theatre and of the people who give of themselves to make it happen. We are pleased to offer you stories about hope, human connection, and renewal. Our signature policy of presenting a variety of drama and fantasy remains, but this year we have carefully planned a season of plays and musicals that lift us up and offer an escape.

We open with Let’s Fall in Love, a new cabaret-style show that transports us back in time with nostalgic music that defined a generation. We continue this fall with a spine-tingling ghost story—but The Woman in Black isn’t just a haunting tale, it’s a love-letter to actors and stagecraft that will keep you on the edge of your seat. West Side Story is a modern American musical masterpiece, combining the brightest stars of our Conservatory Program with professional artists and Ensemble Members to tell Tony and Maria’s story of star-crossed love in a fresh new staging.

OUR 24th SEASON

We begin the new year with two uplifting stories about love, new beginnings, and friendship: a brand-new comedy Morning After Grace shows us it’s never too late to fall in love, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Driving Miss Daisy chronicles an unlikely decades-long friendship. Another new comedy, Into the Breeches, is a patriotic story of sisterhood and coming together in a crisis— when the men are away fighting World War II, the ladies of the local theatre troupe band together to prove “the show must go on!”

The most exciting addition to the new season is a reimagined remounting of the theatre’s 2020 production of A Doll’s House, Part 2. We were a day away from opening when the pandemic closed our doors—and while many of you saw it virtually, this fresh new staging brings the razor-sharp sequel to Ibsen’s 1879 masterpiece to life in the ArtStage, where you’ll be in the middle of the action.

We close our season with two pieces that offer a musical escape and a hopeful love story. Buddy is a rock ‘n’ roll sensation where audiences witness Buddy Holly’s meteoric rise to stardom and hear all his greatest hits along the way.

Maytag Virgin is a brand-new romantic comedy and an old-fashioned romance that has the perfect message of hope, redemption, and renewal to close a season designed to celebrate human connection.

Our over a year-long intermission has proved that theatre makers are industrious and that theatre lovers are devoted. It also taught us that true theatre isn’t on a small screen. When people come together to watch a live play, their heartbeats synchronize. A painting in a museum never changes, the actors in a film give the same performance at every viewing, and the words in a book always read in the same order, but a play is alive! No two performances are the same and our work is never finished until you experience it with us.

We are so glad you’re back where we all belong. As always, we hope you enjoy the show as much as we enjoy performing it for you.

Florida Rep’s Board of Directors welcomes you to our 24th season at Florida Repertory Theatre.

To simply say that this past year was a tremendous challenge to the theatre would be a huge understatement. We survived this past year thanks to our loyal supporters, patrons, donors, and through the efforts of our excellent leadership team led by Greg Longenhagen and John Martin. The Pandemic forced us to shut down indoor productions, lay off staff and cut hours. However, with ingenuity, flexibility, and strong support we did manage to produce outdoor performances with our wonderful interns and our Education team. On stage, under the stars, next to the river…truly magical!

Season 24 brings a reboot of last year’s cancelled productions with some small changes. The Pandemic is still with us, but we will adhere to strict safety protocols in order to keep our staff, actors, and patrons safe. It is great to be back in business.

In addition to our work on stage as a regional theatre company, Florida Rep has an active and vital Education and Outreach arm that reaches more than 45,000 children and young adults annually - and that number continues to grow. It is comprised of the Theatre for Young Audiences and Lunchbox Theatre, Camp Florida Rep, and the popular, audition-only Conservatory Program, classes for youth and adults, and more. I encourage all of you to attend one of these wonderful productions where you will see the stars of tomorrow.

Florida Rep’s Board of Directors is responsible for the financial health of the theatre, and we work hard all year to raise the funds to keep these vital community programs going. We also strive to keep your ticket prices as reasonable as possible, all the while bringing you the highest quality theatre in Southwest Florida. Each year we continue to validate the Wall Street Journal’s acclaimed drama critic and award-winning author, Terry Teachout, when he reported that Florida Repertory Theatre is “One of America’s Top Repertory Companies!”

Your donations as Patrons support more than one third of our budget and are critical to our success. Help us continue to provide the best actors, the best scripts, and the most fun shows in Southwest Florida. A LETTER FROM YOUR MAYOR Dear Florida Repertory Theatre Patrons, Good theater brings entertainment to its audience. Great community theater brings young and old together for a common goal: to put on an outstanding performance that promotes creativity and stirs our emotions, moving us to laughter and tears.

For more than two decades, the City of Palms has been blessed with award-winning regional theater being acted out in the historic Arcade Theatre in beautiful downtown Fort Myers.

Florida Rep is undoubtedly one of Southwest Florida’s most important cultural and educational institutions. Both Gulfshore Life Magazine and Florida Weekly have on numerous occasions named the Rep “Best Performing Arts Group,” and the theatre has been featured in the New York Times and covered in American Theatre Magazine.

It was encouraging to watch Florida Rep pivot to a virtual and outdoor season in 2020-2021. I am thrilled that in-person professional theater will be returning to the River District. Thank you to Artistic Director Greg Longenhagen, Executive Director John Martin, and their dedicated staff and actors for keeping theater alive in Southwest Florida.

For nearly a quarter-century, The Florida Repertory Theatre has entertained Southwest Florida with critically acclaimed comedies, dramas, and musicals from its downtown Fort Myers home in the Historic Arcade Theatre. Year after year, the Florida Rep’s talented performers and dynamic team prove why this Fort Myers mainstay has earned its reputation as one of Lee County’s most important cultural institutions.

ABOUT THE WRITERS LEONARD BERNSTEIN (Composer; 1918-1990) was a composer and musician, and the first American conductor to receive international acclaim. His classical musical theatre and other various symphonic and orchestral compositions make him one of the most celebrated musicians today. Bernstein earned his music degree at Harvard University and then studied conducting at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He later moved to New York and became assistant conductor at the New York Philharmonic. His concert conducting debut was broadcast on the radio and made him an overnight success leading to guest conducting positions across the country. During this time, he wrote the score to Jerome Robbins’ ballet Fancy Free, and later developed the musical On the Town with Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

In 1957, he was appointed the music director of the New York Philharmonic and began work on the score of two more of his most iconic musical works. The first was Candide, an operetta based on Voltaire’s famous novel. His most famous work, however, was on the score for the musical West Side Story, which has become his most enduring and well-loved score, and immortalized in its classic movie adaptation. In his later years, Bernstein continued to conduct operas and symphonies all over the globe that were broadcast on radio and television to reach wide audiences. He won several Grammy awards for his music and conducting, and a Tony award for the score of On the Town.

ARTHUR LAURENTS (Librettist; 1917-2011) was an American playwright, screenwriter, and director well known for his work on major Golden Age Broadway musicals like West Side Story and Gypsy.

Born to Jewish parents in Brooklyn, New York, as Arthur Levine, he began his writing career in radio, writing for several popular shows and ultimately writing training films and plays for the armed forces while stationed in New York during World War II. Laurents wrote both plays and screenplays in the 1940s and 1950s, before being asked to write the libretto for West Side Story. His next project

would reunite him with Steven Sondheim as lyricist and librettist, with Jule Styne managing the tunes for Gypsy, often considered one of the best books written for a Broadway musical. Laurents continued to write and/or direct musicals in the 1960s with Sondheim’s Anyone Can Whistle (book and direction), Do I Hear a Waltz? an adaptation of his 1952 play The Time of the Cuckoo, and Hallelujah Baby, which won a Tony for Best Musical of 1968.

Laurents later wrote the screenplays to 1970s hits The Way We Were and The Turning Point, and in 1983, he was back on Broadway directing the Jerry Herman smash La Cage aux Folles for which he won a Tony.

STEPHEN SONDHEIM (Lyricist) is an American composer and lyricist born in New York City in 1930 and known for his immense contributions to musical theater for over 50 years. He studied piano and organ from a young age and harnessed his songwriting skills while a young student. As a teen, Sondheim met Oscar Hammerstein II, and the lyricist soon became Sondheim’s mentor. After majoring in music at college, Sondheim moved back to New York City in 1956 where he met Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins and subsequently wrote the lyrics for West Side Story, which opened in 1957. He went on to write the lyrics for Gypsy.

This was the beginning of a series of theatrical hits and a hugely successful collaboration with the producer and director, Harold Prince, during the 1970s. Sondheim’s most famous works include (as composer and lyricist) A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods. He is the winner of an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards (more than any other composer) including the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize and the Laurence Olivier Award. In recent years, his work has seen revivals on Broadway and London’s West End and has been adapted for film.

WHO’S WHO PATRICK AGONITO (Baby John) Originally from Fairfield, CT, Patrick graduated with his BFA in Musical Theatre from Emerson College in Boston, MA. Patrick was a Professional Acting Intern this past season at Florida Rep, performing in Mockingbird (Michael), Golden (Joey), It’s A Wonderful Life (Clarence), Godspell (Jeffrey) A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Bottom/ Lysander) and Into the Woods (Cinderella’s Prince), and also worked as a Teaching Artist this past summer. He has worked professionally for the Weathervane Theatre in Whitfield, NH and for American Classics in Boston, MA. Many thanks to Kody, Christina, Zeke, Curtis, Roz, Aaron, Mom, Dad, and Thomas.

EMMA BADGER (Minnie/ Music Assistant) Originally from Chattanooga, TN, Emma recently graduated from Samford University with a BFA in Musical Theatre.

Her recent performance credits include The Fantasticks, Cabaret, and Spring Awakening at the Virginia Samford Theatre, as well as Little Women, Into the Woods, 1776, The Wolves, and The Jungle Book at Samford University. Emma is currently working as an Acting Intern at Florida Repertory Theatre for the 2021-2022 season. She is thankful for the cast, crew, and everyone on the team at Florida Rep! NAYDA MARIE BAEZ (Rosalia) is a graduate of AMDA and is so excited to be back at Florida Rep! Recent credits include Dapple Cow in Click Clack Moo, Ariel in Footloose, Hermia/Snug in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Roz in Golden, and Veronica in Heathers.

MADIE BARKER (Jet Ensemble) is 18 years old and recently graduated from Fort Myers High School. Madie has been dancing her entire life trying many different styles, but has kept a special place in her heart for musical theatre. She is so excited to bring her talent back to the Florida Rep stage and wants to thank her family for their support through her endeavors.

ATHENA ROSE BELIS (Shark Ensemble) is very excited to perform West Side Story with Florida Rep after participating in Conservatory productions of Matilda and Godspell Jr! She began performing in kindergarten and has a true passion for dance. She is most proud of participating in the Junior Theatre Festival and winning Outstanding Production playing the roles of Mufasa in The Lion King Jr. (2019) and Mrs. Wormwood in Matilda Jr. (2021). Special thanks to her family, friends, and directors for always supporting her!

ZEKE BOCKLAGE (Snowboy/Asst.

Fight Captain) (EMC) is thrilled to be back on the Florida Rep stage. He was recently seen in the Rep’s production of Into the Woods as the Mysterious Man/Assistant Director, as well as the virtual tour of the one man show The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus. Zeke holds an MFA in Acting from Western Illinois University and is a certified Actor Combatant through SAFD and a level 2 combatant through Dueling Arts International. Zeke has worked professionally across the United States and has appeared as Richard in Shakespeare’s Richard II, Bernard in Boeing-Boeing, Melchior in Spring Awakening, Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone and John Worthing in The Importance of Being Earnest.

Zeke currently serves as a resident instructor and outreach manager at Florida Rep. He would like to thank his friends and family for their constant support. Zeke is represented by Now Talent in St. Louis, Missouri.

DAVID BREITBARTH*† (Officer Krupke) has been an Ensemble Member since 2012. David is 24 years an Associate Artist at Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota where he’s appeared in over 80 productions, which include Rhinoceros (also at American Conservatory Theatre, SF), Murder on the Orient Express, A Doll’s House Part 2, The Little Foxes, Both Your Houses, The Grapes of Wrath, Glengarry Glen Ross, Clybourne Park, God of Carnage, Once in a Lifetime, Twelve Angry Men, The Front Page, The Immigrant, world premieres of Men of Tortuga and Perfect Mendacity, A Few Good Men, A Flea in Her Ear, Rounding Third, Art, and Nicholas Nickleby. David is a proud 2013 Lunt-Fontanne Fellow, selected by the prestigious Ten Chimneys Foundation.

WHO’S WHO CANTRELLA CANADY (Glad Hand) is a Fort Myers native and ecstatic to be returning to Florida Repertory Theatre in this production of West Side Story! She has also performed in Florida Rep Education’s Bulletproof Backpack as Officer Max, Spring Awakening as Adult Woman, as well as several Florida Rep readings, including Day of Absence and the 4th Annual PlayLab Festival (2017). He recently graduated from Southeast Missouri University with his BFA in Musical Theatre and a Minor in Dance. He also studied at Florida School of the Arts where he received his AS in Musical Theatre. He is very grateful for all the love and support he has received from his family, friends, and professors.

KAYLA CLEMENTS (Teresita) is thrilled to be making her Florida Repertory Theatre debut!

She is a graduate of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy and has spent the last five years performing in New York City. Her credits include the films Skeletal and Loves Me Not, and the musicals Pinkalicious, All Shook Up, Sweet Charity (in the titular role of Charity Hope Valentine), and many more! Kayla is honored to be a part of this production of this iconic musical.

JOE COLLINS (Action) recently got his BFA in Musical Theatre degree with a minor in dance from Western Illinois University.

His favorite roles include Jack Kelly (Newsies), Lewis (Pippin), Vic Fleming (Moonlight and Magnolias), and Chip (The 25th… Spelling Bee). He is incredibly thankful to be a performance intern at Florida Rep and loves the opportunity to work with such wonderful people. His favorite pastimes are reading, running, playing guitar, and watching the Chicago Bears.

MATTHEW EAKINS (Tiger) has been involved with the Florida Repertory Theatre’s Conservatory Program since 2016, participating in shows such as Big River, Heathers, Newsies, Matilda, and more. He is eager for his main stage debut and return to the theatre after taking some time away to focus on academic endeavors! He loves to perform and is looking forward to put on an amazing show.

SOPHIE ELIZABETH (Consuela) is 18 years old and a recent graduate of Fort Myers High School.

Her most recent Florida Repertory Theatre Conservatory credits include the Witch in Into the Woods, Judas in Godspell, and Mrs. Wormwood in Matilda. She is beyond excited to be back onstage in the Arcade, and hopes you enjoy the show!

MICHAEL MAROTTA* (Doc/Fight Captain) happily returns to Florida Repertory Theatre, his home away from home, since the theater’s inception where he’s directed (An Inspector Calls, I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti!, and Grand Night for Singing) and acted (Herr Schultz in Cabaret and all the men in Tenderly: The Rosemary Clooney Musical among others).

Schrank) was last seen at Florida Rep as Arthur in An Inspector Calls. The bulk of his career has been with Actors Theatre of Louisville, dating back to 1976. With that company he has directed over 30 productions and acted in more than 150. He has also performed with other major theaters such as the Public Theatre in New York, Cincinnati Playhouse, Cleveland Playhouse, Arena Stage, and Milwaukee Rep. Representative roles include Jamie in Moon for the Misbegotten, Alceste in The Misanthrope, Charlie in The Foreigner, Enobarbus in Antony and Cleopatra, and Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. He is a 2009 recipient of the prestigious Theatre Communications Group Distinguished Artist Grant.

RYAN REYES (Chino) is from the small town of Blairstown, New Jersey and a recent DeSales University graduate. Previous roles include Pippin in Pippin, Freddy Rodriguez in Working: A Musical, and Don Adriano de Armado in Love’s Labour’s Lost for the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. In the summer of 2019, Ryan was a background actor in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story film, shooting six days with the main cast. He is super excited to be performing in his first production here at the Florida Repertory Theatre!

LAELA BEATRIZ RODRIGUEZ (Francisca) hits the ground running with their first out-ofcollege production and they could not be more thankful to the creative team at the Florida Rep for giving them this incredible opportunity. A recent graduate from the American Musical Dramatic Academy, Laela has spent the past year continuing to train for this career and is excited to start it off with West Side Story. Previously seen as Sandra in Big Fish and coincidently Sandra in All Shook Up, Laela plays various roles and is always willing to take up any challenge. SCOTTY WELLS (Mouthpiece) is extremely proud to be performing in West Side Story this season! Scotty is a junior at FGCU and is majoring in psychology. This is Scotty’s seventh show at the Florida Rep including playing the roles of Ram in Heathers, the Wolf/Cinderella’s Father in Into the Woods and multiple characters in Newsies. LORELAI VEGA (Estella/ Swing) is 16 years old and a sophomore at Golden Gate High School. She is thrilled to be a part of West Side Story as her first show at Florida Rep. She has been involved in theatre around SWFL since the age of nine. Past credits include Linda in The Wedding Singer, Katherine in Freaky Friday, Urleen in Footloose, and Maleficent in Descendants. Dance Captain) is from Atlanta and recently graduated from Shenandoah Conservatory with her BFA in Musical Theatre. Recent credits include Grease at Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre, Beauty and the Beast and Sister Act at Millbrook Playhouse, and Legally Blonde and Mamma Mia at Cortland Repertory Theatre. REBBEKAH VEGAROMERO* (Maria) is thrilled to be reprising her favorite role and making her Florida Repertory debut with this production.

Rebbekah has performed at theatres across America from Boston (A Civil War Christmas/Huntington) to Seattle (Maria/West Side Story/5th Avenue). A YoungArts awardwinning writer, she graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor’s in English and Theatre. In addition to performing, Rebbekah is a tarot reader, producer, and author, whose poetry has been published in The Quaranzine Zine and Sixfold. She produced the forthcoming short films The Appraiser and The Question, which she also wrote and stars in. With many thanks to her blood and chosen family, she dedicates this performance to the memories of her tía, Caridad Vega, a renowned rumba dancer, whose stories inspired Rebbekah to follow in her footsteps, and her Granny, Leila Alson, who gave her a love of musical theatre. KODY C JONES (Director/Fight Choreographer) holds an MFA in acting from Western Illinois University and Secondary Education and Acting degrees from University of Michigan-Flint. He has acted and directed professionally all over Chicago and the Midwest for the past ten years and served as the Artistic Director for Shawnee Summer Theatre in Indiana and The Stage at Island Park in Fargo, North Dakota. He served as a Resident Artist for Flint Youth Theatre for three years and taught theatre to children age four and up with Chicago Public Schools, Arts for All, Lil Buds Theatre, and the American Theatre Company.

He has also taught at Western Illinois University and Trollwood Center for The Performing Arts in Minnesota in addition to presenting professional workshops in Chicago, Milwaukee, Minnesota, and Michigan. His past training focused on Creative Dramatics Laban Movement Analysis and stage combat.

DAVID ARSENAULT***† (Scenic Designer) Florida Repertory Theatre: A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. As a designer and associate, David’s work has been seen on Broadway, Off-Broadway, regionally, and internationally.

Regional design credits include productions at The Kennedy Center, Bay Street Theatre, Kitchen Theatre Company, Geva Theatre, Hangar Theatre, Northern Stage, Merry Go Round Playhouse, and Gulfshore Playhouse, among others. GIANNA CARTER (Asst. Stage Manager) is a recent Auburn University graduate from Atlanta, Georgia. She is currently the Assistant Production Manager here at Florida Rep, as well as the Assistant Stage Manager of this great show. Her most recent AU stage management credits include Kalamazoo, Check, Please!, Little Women, and New Day Dawning, as well as several ASM roles. CHRISTINA DECARLO (Asst. Director) is originally from the Atlanta area and holds a Bachelor of Arts in theatre from Georgia College. For the past 6 years Christina has worked in the Education Department at Florida Repertory Theatre in which she has directed, choreographed, and taught a multitude of musical theatre classes for all ages.

She has designed, stitched and wardrobe-supervised at theatres such as Williamstown Theatre Festival, New Jersey Repertory Theatre, Florida Repertory Theatre, Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars, Born Dancing, Ohio Light Opera, Boomerang Theatre Company and Opera in the Heights. CURTIS HOLBROOK (Choreographer) appeared in the 2009 Broadway Revival of West Side Story as Action under the direction of Arthur Laurents.

Curtis has served as Choreographer for Sesame Street on PBS and as the Skate Choreographer for the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit, The

Band’s Visit. As an Actor, Curtis has been seen in 11 Broadway shows including SpongeBob SquarePants, If/Then, The Addams Family, West Side Story, Xanadu, All Shook Up, Taboo, The Boy from Oz, Follies, Footloose and Fosse. His film and TV credits include Hairspray, SpongeBob the Musical: Live On Stage!, Across the Universe, Nurse Jackie, Law and Order: SVU, All My Children and As the World Turns. ZOEY MASSIE (Asst. Stage Manager) is delighted to join Team Stage Management for her first production with Florida Rep. She recently graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University, where she earned a B.A. in English and a concentration in Theatre. ROSALIND METCALF (Music Director) is thrilled to once again be working at Florida Rep, having been musical director for several of their past Conservatory shows. After many years of musical directing in New Jersey, it is wonderful to be able to continue with such a high caliber of musical theater in the Fort Myers area. Some of his favorite shows include Pippin in Pippin, Wiley Post/ Trick Roper in Will Rogers Follies and set designer for Noises Off at Big Arts on Sanibel Island. When not doing theatre, Adam enjoys brewing his own beer and spending time with his wife, Keara, his pups Dancer and Meadowlark, and his cat Cocoa Puff.
