DEAR FRIEND & THEATRE LOVER, Welcome to Florida Repertory Theatre’s 2023-2024 Season—our 26th year as a cultural and artistic home in Southwest Florida! Whether this is your first visit or your hundred-and-first, we are grateful you’re here. Thank you for buying a ticket or donating to support live theatre in our community. This season also marks my fifth anniversary as your Producing Artistic Director. When I began this journey five years ago, Florida Rep was in a strong position, and for two seasons we increased the number of patrons we served- including area children, strengthened our reputation for high-quality productions, and even received a transformational gift making it possible for us to purchase our historic home in the River District. The future looked bright. What I couldn’t have foreseen were momentous challenges coming our way—a global pandemic followed by a devastating hurricane and storm surge that tested our entire region. The beginning of a new season is always a time to look back and reflect, but this season’s opening is particularly moving because it marks two years since reopening after the pandemic and one year since we weathered the storm of the century. As I look back at those trying days following Ian, I’m not emotional because of all we lost, but rather what we gained. Florida Rep’s dedicated staff and artists came together to clean up and reopen our theatres. And despite great personal losses, our community of supporters rallied to donate time, resources, and much-needed funds. Against all odds, we managed to open the season on time. So as we look ahead to Season 26 and beyond, I know that there is no challenge we cannot overcome together and vow that Florida Rep will be here to offer you top-notch productions and a cultural outlet for many moons to come. After all we’ve been through, we know you’re looking for entertainment that offers an escape. And while we have options for those looking for thoughtprovoking theatre, our 2023-2024 Season features a record number of musicals, comedies, and family-friendly selections. community as we continue to heal and restore. As we do so, let’s dance in the aisles and share a few laughs! This season, we’ve worked hard to prepare a nine-show line-up that will enlighten, excite, and entertain – and we hope to see you in the audience for every one of the stories that celebrate the iconic voices who’ve made the American experience rich through the 20th and 21st centuries. This season’s plays feature a farce from one of the great American comedy writers, a feel-good comedy about finding common ground, a clever new Sherlock Holmes/Charles Dickens whodunnit mash-up at the holidays, an American classic, and a few thought-provoking dramas. This season’s musical selections represent a diverse songbook perfect for any music lover – from Rodgers & Hart to Hank Williams, and of course the powerful female voices of the 1960s. Our signature “wide variety” is on full display this season, and there is something for every theatre lover. In the age of social media and streaming entertainment, there is nothing quite as magical as sitting down in a darkened theatre to experience a live performance— because we’ve custom-made every detail just for you! Last year was difficult for all, but with your generous support and patronage, we were able to survive Ian and had our theaters up and running in record time. We especially want to thank the State of Florida and particularly Representative Spencer Roach for their amazing support. Florida Rep is not just a professional theatre, but a vibrant and vital educational institution. Our Education Department operates a summer arts intensive camp, a Theatre for Young Audiences series that brings the arts to life for thousands of Lee County students each year, and a Conservatory Program for more advanced students. This year, we are proud to partner with Pace Center for Girls, Valerie’s House, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to reach out to even more young people. Florida Rep also helps to develop new works for audiences of the future. Since 2014, our PlayLab Festival has invited playwrights from all over the country to submit their new offerings to be presented as developmental readings. A few of these plays have had their world premiere or regional premiere on one of our stages—including one coming up in the fall of 2023! A LETTER FROM YOUR MAYOR Dear Florida Repertory Theatre Patrons, On behalf of the Historic City of Palms, I am thrilled to welcome you to the 26th Season of Florida Repertory Theatre, one of Southwest Florida’s most important cultural and educational institutions. The great Laurence Olivier once said “I believe that in a great city, or even in a small city or a village, a great theatre is the outward and visible sign of an inward and probable culture.” Throughout the years, Florida Rep has remained a cultural cornerstone of our community. They lead the way on the reopening of Downtown business after Ian. I was encouraged and inspired by the music, drama and laughter resonating through the town, as audiences returned to the Historic Arcade Theatre and thus, patronized our local shops and restaurants. Through the Florida Rep Education program, performing arts training including acting and tech theatre classes, tours to the schools, college-level internships and theatre appreciation, nurtured people of all ages. The resiliency of our city is evident now more than ever. We know that, as they celebrate their 26th Season, Florida Rep will continue its mission to provide first class regional theatre for our historic River District and all of Southwest Florida. Please give a hearty congratulations to Producing Artistic Director Greg Longenhagen, Executive Director John Martin, and their dedicated staff, talented acting company and award-winning directors, designers, and guest artists for helping to improve our quality of life, through the arts. Disney’s Broadway classic is based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature and includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice.

This 2-week training program is designed for students ages 12–18 and is taught by professionals in the theatre tech field. Students will learn about stage management, lighting, sound, set design/props, costuming, and stage makeup. At the conclusion, students will be assigned a mentor from our Florida Repertory Production Team and given on-the-job training in one of the technical field positions as they prepare to work backstage for the Conservatory production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Auditions for students 12–18 will be announced in the Spring. Performances will be offered in May 2024.

Classes will be held in March 2024 with performances in May.

KATORI HALL is a playwright and performer hailing from Memphis, Tennessee. Her awardwinning play Hoodoo Love premiered at the Cherry Lane Theatre in 2007 and was developed under Lynn Nottage. Hoodoo Love received three AUDELCO nominations (Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, August Wilson Playwright Award). Her other plays include Remembrance, Hurt Village, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning, On the Chitlin’ Circuit, and Freedom Train. Her work has been developed and presented at the following venues: the American Repertory Theatre, Kennedy Center, Cherry Lane Theatre, Classical Theatre of Harlem, Schomburg Center, BRICLab, Women’s Project, World Financial Center, Lark Play Development Center, New Professional Theatre, The O’Neill, the Juilliard School, Stanford University, and Columbia University. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Lecompte du Nouy Prize, North Manhattan Arts Alliance Fellowship, New York State Council on the Arts Commission Grant, New Professional Theatre’s Writers’ Festival award, Fellowship of Southern Writers Bryan Family Award in Drama, New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship in Playwriting and Screenwriting, Royal Court Theatre Residency, and the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award. She has also been a Kennedy Center Playwriting Fellow. As an actor, her credits include Law & Order: SVU, The President’s Puppets (The Public), Growing Up a Slave (American Place Theatre), Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (American Place Theatre), the world premiere of Amerika (Theatre de la Jeune Lune/American Repertory Theatre), and Black Girl (Sande Shurin Theatre). As a journalist, her work has been published in The Boston Globe, Essence, Newsweek, and The Commercial Appeal. She graduated from Columbia University in 2003 with a major in African-American Studies and Creative Writing. She was awarded top departmental honors from the university’s Institute for Research in African-American Studies (IRAAS). In 2005, she graduated from the American Repertory Theatre Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard University, receiving a Master of Fine Arts in Acting. She is now a student in the Juilliard School’s Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program. rom the beginning, the Civil Rights Movement was invested in making Martin Luther King out to be the model of perfection. He was a minister, free from any scandals, with amazing oratorical skills that could inspire people to action. The movement needed a charismatic leader who was above reproach. And thus, the image of King being perfect was born. But we know, he was a man like any other man. Alongside his greatness were all of the same failings we are all subject to. Being 50+ years removed from his assassination, it is now important to remember that it doesn’t require a saint to move mountains. An ordinary person with drive and determination can make a difference, just the way that King did. But this is not the only message of this play. The Mountaintop appeals to me because the themes and ideas of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement are even more important now than they were when Hall wrote the play. It boggles my mind when politicians quote King out of context to support legislation designed to suppress voting rights or ban the teaching of racial inequality. King may have had a message of hope, but he never abandoned the reality of the world. His words and actions focused a spotlight on the treatment of poor people and Black people in America. We may meme positive quotes from “I Have A Dream” but the crux of many of his speeches were the failings and broken promises of this country for its people of color. King also said in that same speech, “America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked ‘insufficient funds.’” and “We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality.” As we look around our city, state, and nation, where do we see how we still fail? Can you see we may be dismantling many of the equality gains made during and shortly after King’s lifetime? Today, the portrayal of a real King, a whole King, that presents more of the entirety of his message is what we need to see; not a sanitized image of King that is made palatable for a broad audience. I hope this play causes a stir in your heart and your mind and helps you realize that we are far from realizing his dream, but with work, we still can. -Ansley Valentine

Center Stage’s production of Antigone and Tyree in the Off-Broadway production of Bundle of Sticks at Intar Theater. IMANI LEE WILLIAMS (u/s Camae) is softly landing from writing, producing, and starring in her first one-woman show, Ideas of Grandeur, performed at the Sarasota Contemporary Dance Studio. Returning to Fort Myers from Asolo Repertory Theatre’s productions of Ken Ludwig’s The Three Musketeers as Queen Anne & ensemble, Chicken & Biscuits as Simone and developing work through readings like Terry Guest’s The Madness of Mary Todd, Aleshea Harris’ On Sugarland, and T. Cousin and Monteze Freeland’s Dancing in the Blue Light. Imani performed as Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible at The Laboratory Theater for which she received the 2019 SWFL Broadway World’s Regional Award for Best Actress. Recently honored with a Master’s in Fine Arts from the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, Imani is proudly reflective at the moment. Imani wants to thank her supportive family, friends, and the SWFL theater community for remaining her creative home.
