ROBERT L. FREEDMAN (Book & Lyrics) won a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Book of a Musical for the Tony-winning Best Musical of 2014, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. He was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Score, with composer and co-lyricist Steven Lutvak, with whom he shared the 2014 Drama Desk Award for Best Lyrics. Among his television career highlights, Robert won the Writers Guild Award for HBO’s A Deadly Secret, and was nominated for an Emmy Award and a Writers Guild award for the miniseries Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows.

Other teleplays include Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, for which he received a third Writers Guild nomination; What Makes A Family, which received a GLAAD Award and for which Robert was a Humanitas finalist; What Love Sees, winner of the Silver Plaque at the Chicago International Television Festival; as well as the highly-rated true crime dramas Murder In The Hamptons, The Pastor’s Wife, Honor Thy Mother, and Bitter Blood. In 2006, Freedman and Lutvak received both the Fred Ebb Award for songwriting and the Kleban Award for lyric writing for their work on the musicals A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and Campaign of the Century. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Robert has B.A. in Theatre from UCLA and an M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing and Musical Theatre from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Robert is currently at work on a film for HBO and Sundance Films. He is married to actress Jean Kauffman, and they are the proud parents of Max Freedman, a writer and community activist living in Brooklyn.

STEVEN LUTVAK (Music & Lyrics) made his Broadway debut with his score to A Gentleman’s Guide to Love And Murder, for which he supplied the music, and cowrote the lyrics with Robert L. Freedman. A Gentleman’s Guide won the Drama League, the Outer Critics Circle, the Drama Desk and the Tony Awards for Best Musical of 2014.

Since its successful run of over two years on Broadway, there have been two National Tours (the second of which is currently on the road), and productions have already been seen in Sweden, Japan, and the first Chinese language production opens this December.

JAN NEUBERGER* (Miss Shingle/Woman 1) is a veteran actor of 46 years and counting. Broadway: original casts of Wicked, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Big, A Change in the Heir, and the first revival of Gypsy in 1974.

Off-Broadway, regional and stock productions in abundance; Royal Albert and Carnegie Halls with Kristina by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson of ABBA; a couple films and a smattering of TV, including the recent Hallmark Channel movie True Love Blooms, shot in St. Petersburg. MARCUS STEVENS* (D’Ysquith Family) is Thrilled to be making his Florida Rep debut! Marcus is a New York based theatre artist who has performed Off-Broadway in two incarnations of the critically acclaimed Forbidden Broadway series and can be heard on two of its original cast recordings. He’s been seen on stages across the country including The Walnut Street Theatre, Sacramento Music Circus, Riverside Theatre, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, Pittsburgh CLO, and The Kennedy Center. Favorite roles include God in An Act of God, Sparky in Forever Plaid, and Motel in Fiddler on the Roof. In addition to acting, Marcus is a Richard Rodgers Award-winning theatre writer who has penned book and lyrics to several musicals including Yo, Vikings! (published by Samuel French, Inc.) and Mythic, which premiered in London in 2018 and received its North American premiere in Montreal October of 2019. Mythic also received an original London cast album, which is now available for streaming on Spotify and Apple Music. Marcus’s biggest production to date is his son Ari – created

JASON PARRISH**† (Director) is an Ensemble Member now in fifteenth season with Florida Rep, currently serving as the company’s Associate Artistic Director. His directing credits with Florida Rep include: the NNPN Rolling World Premiere of Alabaster, Million Dollar Quartet, Steel Magnolias, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, A Christmas Story, The Fantasticks, Tru, intern showcases [title of show], and The Shape of Things, as well as The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, Curious George: The Golden Meatball, Miss Nelson is Missing, the world-premiere commission of Journey to Oz, Schoolhouse Rock Live, How I Became a Pirate, The New Kid, and The Mischief Makers for Florida Rep’s Theatre for Young Audience Series. Jason’s over 30 appearances on Florida Rep stages include Cabaret, How the Other Half Loves, Over the River and Through the Woods, The Dingdong, Twelve Angry Men, Around the World in 80 Days, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Clybourne Park, Greetings, Miracle on South Division Street, Noises Off, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, 2014’s nationally acclaimed production of Arsenic and Old Lace, and six years in David Sedaris’ one-manshow, The Santaland Diaries. KYLE BRAND (Choreographer) is a New York City-based actor and director/choreographer.

Regionally he has been seen in Mary Poppins (Alabama Shakespeare Festival), Oliver (Pioneer Theatre Co.), Mary Poppins, Mamma Mia (Northern Stage), A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas (Hartford Stage Co.), and Lincoln in Love (Goodspeed Musicals –Festival of New Artists). He has also been in numerous productions at the Monomoy Theatre on Cape Cod. He has assisted director Mark Waldrop on A Funny Thing… at Paper Mill Playhouse and The Sound of Music at the Olney Theatre Center. His directing credits include Avenue Q, Altar Boyz (Playhouse on Park), Damn Yankees (Monomoy Theatre) and Titanic (The Hartt School). His work Off-Broadway has been seen at Classic Stage Company, The Joyce, Prospect Theatre Company, The Play Company, Working Theatre, kef Productions, New Federal Theatre, The Westside Theatre, The Duke on 42nd Street, Theatre Row, and 59e59. Regionally, his work has been seen at The Kennedy Center, George Street Playhouse, Weston Playhouse, Northern Stage, Dorset Theatre Festival, Ogunquit Playhouse, Hangar Theatre, Berkshire Theatre Group, Florida Studio Theatre, John W. Engeman Theatre, Bucks County Playhouse, Hudson Stage Company, Geva Theatre Center, Kitchen Theatre Company, Gulfshore Playhouse, UrbanArias, Merry Go Round Playhouse, Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, and Opera North. David has been John Doyle’s scenic associate on several productions including the NYC revivals of Sondheim’s Passion and Pacific Overtures, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Allegro, and the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of The Color Purple, as well as the national tour. CHARLENE GROSS*** (Costume Designer) is thrilled to return for her fifth season at Florida Rep. She is the Resident Costume Designer for Ohio Light Opera, where she has designed sets and costumes for over 55 productions. During the

academic year, Charlene is an Assistant Professor of Costume Design at Penn State. Her costume designs for theatre, dance, and opera have been seen on and off-Broadway in New York City, across the country, and on the West End of London.

Theatre credits include the Cleveland Playhouse, Rattlestick Theatre, NYC Fringe Festival, The Flea, Eastman Opera Theatre, Merrimack Repertory, The Sands Casino (Atlantic City), Seattle Repertory Theatre, The Public Theater (NYC), The Ingenuity Festival, Cleveland Museum of Art, and The Manhattan Theatre Club. Designs for dance include GroundWorks, Joyce SoHo, The Yard, The Juilliard School, Dance Space, and Kunningham Studios.

MATT KOLLER (Drums) is thrilled to be returning to the Florida Rep! This season he appeared as the drummer in Always... Patsy Cline. Matt is the founder and conductor of the City of Palms Youth Choir in Fort Myers, FL. Choirs under his direction have performed several masterworks, world premieres, and have appeared in Carnegie Hall.

He has conducted at Florida Gulf Coast University Opera, Gulfshore Opera, and teaches private voice lessons. His students have appeared in lead roles on Broadway, national tours, television, and film. He is a graduate of Westminster Choir College and is a member of The Same Stream Choir in Philadelphia.

CLIFTON LEWIS (Violin) is an actor/musician. He holds a Master’s Degree in Music from the New England Conservatory in Boston. He has played with the Missoula Symphony and the Bergen Philharmonic, along with pit orchestras in northern New Jersey. Recently, as an actor, he had a small role in the final s eason o f T he D euce on HBO. He enjoys performing with his wife Victoria Casella in Vicki & Clif, Act II, a cabaret act.

KATIE LOWE (Sound Designer/Engineer) served as resident sound designer last season at Florida Repertory Theatre. Previously, she has been an electrics intern at Florida Repertory Theatre and sound apprentice at Endstation Theatre Company after graduating from the University of Kentucky. While she stage managed many shows throughout college, her favorite University Theatre credits include The Cherry Orchard and The Skin of Our Teeth.

KEIFER MACDONALD (Artistic Associate) is a Canadian actor currently completing his MFA in Acting at the University of Florida.

BWW Review: A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER at Florida Rep is Delightfully Deadly

Florida Repertory Theatre's production of A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER, directed by Jason Parrish, tells the story of Monty Navarro, a young man who learns he is part of the D'Ysquith family and is in line to become the Earl of Highhurst; the only problem is, there are 8 other D'Ysquiths in line ahead of him. Things get a bit tricky as Monty decides to, as you can guess from the title of the show, try and murder his way into becoming the Earl.

Monty is played by David Darrow, and I thoroughly enjoyed his portrayal. There are many moments during the show where the rest of the action pauses and Monty turns to the audience to share his inner thoughts, and Darrow's execution of this was perfect. His performance, from his singing to his facial expressions and beyond, was fantastic to watch.

Monty happens to be in love with Sibella Hallward (played by Gail Bennett), but she marries another man because he is richer than Monty. Of course, this doesn't stop Monty and Sibella from having some sort of relationship, and when Phoebe D'Ysquith (Alex May) enters the picture, things get a little more complicated. I really enjoyed seeing the dynamic of the relationships between all of them

on stage; of course, if you really think about the fact that Sibella is married and Phoebe is Monty's cousin, it really is not a great situation, but I think that adds to the humor of this show. Both of these women are excellent in both their acting and singing as well, and I really appreciated their performances. One of my favorite scenes was when Phoebe pays Monty a visit while Sibella is over ("I've Decided to Marry You"); it was absolutely hilarious, as were many other parts of the show, and I could tell based on the audience's reaction that I wasn't the only one who thought so.

The D'Ysquith family is played by Marcus Stevens, and he did a phenomenal job. He plays 8 (well, 9, really) different characters, and he made each one of them very distinct and funny, and I was very impressed. Of course, Monty is on a mission to kill each of his characters off, and it was thoroughly entertaining to see this drama ensue.

The rest of the ensemble includes Jan Neuberger (Miss Shingle/ Woman 1), Kylie Gray Mask (Woman 2), Chrissy Albanese (Woman 3), Jon Cooper (Man 1), Samuel Floyd (Man 2), and Thomas Hadzeriga (Man 3). They all took on multiple roles throughout the show, including playing paintings that came to life, and I thought each one was excellent.

A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER is a production I've been looking forward to seeing for a long time, and Florida Rep absolutely did not disappoint. The show has so much humor, an intriguing storyline, a beautiful set (designed by David Arsenault), gorgeous costumes (designed by Charlene Gross), wonderful music (directed by Victoria Casella), and so much more. When the show begins with "A Warning to the Audience," a song telling you to get out, you know you're in for something special and a bit more

comedic. I would definitely recommend getting tickets to this production before they sell out! I really loved this show, and I think you will, too.

Was murder ever so much fun … or so funny?

Every time someone died onstage at the Florida Repertory Theatre, the audience gleefully laughed and applauded.

The more gruesome the death, the louder the approval.

You might think them heartless, but they were watching the Tony Award-winning musical, “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,” on the mainstage in the Historic Arcade Theatre.

They can’t say they weren’t warned.

In the prologue, “A Warning to the Audience,” the ensemble implores audience members to escape while they can.

“It’s not too late/…For God’s sake, go!” they sing.

It’s 1909 in London, and Monty (David Darrow) learns after his mother’s death that she was actually a member of the extremely rich D’Ysquith family. They had disinherited her, however, because she married for love, and they disapproved.

Monty’s girlfriend, Sibella (Gail Bennett), loves him, but she’s a social climber who wants to marry a man with money and position.

So in order to get the girl, Monty must become earl.

And before that could ever happen, the sultry and flirtatious Sibella points out to him, eight people would have to die, Monty approaches the D’Ysquith family but is rebuffed. (You just know the family is snobby because they have an apostrophe in their name.)

Then he visits the one family member who is a priest, thinking surely he will have compassion. The priest (Marcus Stevens, who skillfully plays the entire D’Ysquith family throughout) takes Monty up to the roof of a cathedral to show him the view and the architectural details. But, due to high winds and drunkenness, the priest slips off the roof and falls to the cobblestones below.

Splat!

Now only seven people stand between Monty and an earldom.

He ponders: Why not help along the process of elimination?

And so, his little killing spree begins.

Mr. Darrow’s Monty is so innocent, so sweet and boyish, you can’t help but root for him.

And the deaths are very creative, all made to look like accidents: skaters falling through ice, a beekeeper stung by hundreds of bees.

Mr. Stevens adeptly portrays each D’Ysquith family member, from the muscle-bound weightlifter to the busty, self-righteous do-gooder Lady Hyacinth (costumes by Charlene Gross).

As the ensemble tells us, the D’Ysquith family tree is being whittled down to a twig.

(Not that the D’Ysquiths are liked, but it’s all very suspicious.)

Nancy STETSON And keep your eye on Jan Neuberger, who plays Miss Shingle (who informs Monty of his lineage) as well as a number of other characters, including a bartender who admires herself in the reflection of a spoon or mug. Even when she doesn’t have dialogue or lyrics, she’s doing something humorous.

Set designer David Arsenault has given us a gigantic, plush library with leatherbound books and a small, red-curtained stage in the middle. Its curtains open to reveal various locales: a bar in which Henry D’Ysquith and Monty get cozy and sing “It’s Better with a Man,” a hall at the D’Ysquith’s castle with portraits that come to life and sing “A Warning to Monty.”

(This musical is apparently full of unheeded warnings.)

The music, directed by keyboardist Victoria Casella, would be right at home in an early 20th century British music hall. And the lyrics are Gilbert-and-Sullivan-meets-Tim Burton. (Robert L. Freedman wrote the book and lyrics while Steven Lutvak wrote music and lyrics.)

Based on the 1907 novel “Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal,” the show and lyrics are full of double entendres and clever scenes.

One highlight of this thoroughly entertaining musical (which is stuffed with one highlight after another) is Mr. Stevens’ song as Lord Adalbert, “I Don’t Understand the Poor.”

“I don’t understand the poor/The lives they lead/Of want and need/I should think it would be a bore,” he sings. With attitudes like this, no wonder no one misses the D’Ysquiths as they die off.

Another highlight is the number “I’ve Decided to Marry You,” in which Sibella and Phoebe (Alex May) declare their love to Monty. When they wind up in his home at the same time quite by accident, he tries desperately to keep them from discovering one another’s existence. (It would certainly ruin things to have his fiancée and mistress meet.) The song is so well-choreographed, so well-executed and performed, it brought a roar of approval from the audience at its end.

Florida Rep and director Jason Parrish have a triumph on their hands. Not only is this an excellent cast, but Mr. Parrish skillfully gets the right mixture of lightness and humor from his actors. (After all, humor is difficult, but dying is easy.)

Yes, this is a musical about murder and social-climbing, but it’s just such giddy fun.

“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” is not only full of wicked merriment, it’s murderously fun. Go see it. This 2014 Tony Award-winning show tells the story of a penniless young man who discovers he’s a distant heir to an aristocratic family fortune and sets out to stake his claim with his charm and a touch of murder.

'Monty Navarro,' played by actor David Darrow, commands the stage as a serial killer of sorts, who seems to have a hand in the deaths of eight people as he jumps the line of succession by picking off a few distant cousins in the D’Ysquith family in his effort to become an Earl.

Navarro’s convincing lovable character keeps the show going with his strong vocals as he sets out to change the course of his future as he climbs the social ladder.

Gail Bennett plays one of his beautiful love interests 'Sibella Hallward,' alongside Alex May who plays the reserved 'Phoebe D’Ysquith.' Both women are perfectly suited for their roles and keep you smiling with their amazing rich voices, ranges and convincing characters.

However, it is actor Marcus Stevens who leaves the audience in stitches, playing eight different amusing and diverse characters of the noble family whose fate is doomed. Stevens is convincing in each role even performing some characters in stuffed shirts and skirts, including 'Lady Hyacinth.'

Escape the doldrums of the 21st century by attending this delightful and charming show set in 1907 with the 19th century set stage within a stage.

Highlights from Patron Feedback The orchestra did a wonderful job. The sound was clear and not too loud. The effects (blood splattering on the screen) and the bees flying around were so CREATIVE and comic! The actors and actresses were well cast and wonderful!!!!!! We 6 were amazed at their ability to sing, dance, move across the stage, and remember all their lines! The choreography was mesmerizing!

My husband, who is not an avid "theater" fan, loved it!! It is our first play this season and we are looking forward to "A Doll's House 2" later this month!

2/27/2020 10:58 AM Really impressed with the entire package of this play. I first wish to commend Jay Parrish on the direction--I do think it's his best work as a director--with managing all the considerable technical challenges in the production (everything from the costume changes, to the lighting and projection work, to the musical orchestration, to the singing and dancing, and the set design). It was a marvel to see it all come together, with bold choices throughout the piece (the tableaux vivants for the family portraits, the expressionistic ensemble numbers to start each act). It's one of the most confident theatrical productions I have seen at Florida Rep in a long time--sometimes, it's a case of trying too hard, I suppose, or of overcompensating in trying to be something the theatre really isn't. But in this case, I felt the production was in the hands of someone with a clear vision and a very intelligent and deft touch, which is especially impressive

with such an arch and sardonic play to work with. The production crew did its job and then some. I was a little worried about the use of projection being overwhelming, but it was effectively done (and again, getting the cues right was another point of solid direction and teamwork). The set was amazing, everything from the rich color palette (complimented by the women's dresses in particular), to the creative use of the orchestra pit. I could see how the creative team rose to the challenge with the design and the production team in meeting those challenges. I think the more you think of the bigness--really, the height--of your performance stage, the more I am impressed with your productions (this was true of A Christmas Carol and of Cabaret in recent productions). The actors were superb and radiant, from the leads to the gifted ensemble members. The parts required a playful wickedness, with good, sharp winks to the audience, endurance, and the full range of musical theatre talents. Obviously, it was about some over-the-top performative acting, and your actors relished it. And their physicality, from the skating scene to the wonderful door-slamming number, was equally playful and impressive. The play, too, I found to be such a good choice for Florida Rep and its audience. I have to go all the way back to your production of Sherlock Holmes and the West End Horror (or further to your first production of Mousetrap), where you hit your sweet spot between kitsch and top-flight theatre. Yes, there are parts in the play that drag a bit (I'm talking about the writing, not the direction or the acting), or that get a little too caught up in its own cleverness (and to be fair, it's a damned clever play), but it's the right fare of devilry to be memorable with a light, airy touch. I love it that the murderer gets away with it all,

wife and mistress included, and the audience is happy with it all. The subversiveness is delectable, especially with such a conservative, retiring audience.

I was truly astounded to realize how limited the musical accompaniment was because it was absolutely complementary to the performances and complete for the production. We have been aching to see this play since we saw a nugget on the Tony telecast for the year it won. We loved the show. And we were also very pleased at the demeanor of the audience. I hope the cast could tell how enthusiastic we received their efforts. Kudos also to the special effects crew. We were captivated by the scenes such as the church tower -- the wind, the acrophobia and the splat! And the weightlifting surprise. And the beekeeper's demise. So much fun and so little gore. To tell a token of how much we enjoyed last night - and to respond to our host - we paid full price and we would have felt it a bargain at double the charge.

2/14/2020 1:42 PM What a fun play! The actors were all wonderful, but in many cases they sang their parts so fast it was hard to catch their words, but the activity helped clear it up in most cases. It seemed as though when they got to near the end of their song they slowed down just a bit and it was easy to understand.

Especially at the beginning of each song was really hard to catch the actual words. We sat near the back so hopefully those closer to the stage had better luck.
