BRIAN HATCH* (Paul Bratter) started his professional career as an acting intern here at Florida Rep in 2012 – his Florida Rep credits include Camping with Henry and Tom, The Little Foxes, The Unexpected Guest, and The Mousetrap. Regionally, Brian has worked at the Alliance Theatre, Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, Actor’s Express, The High Museum, Georgia Ensemble Theatre, Synchronicity, and many others. His TV credits include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, House of Cards, and Homicide Hunters. Brian has also worked on commercial campaigns for Pepsi, Jimmy John’s, IBM, Hello Toothpaste, Sam Adams, Facebook, Walmart, and more. MIKE FILIPOWSKI (Delivery Man) has been a Florida Rep volunteer since 2015. In addition to ushering, he was a rehearsal contestant in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Originally from Northern New Jersey, Mike taught in the Newton Public Schools for 33 years. During that time he was employed as an English teacher, department chairperson, building coordinator, and curriculum coordinator. His love for the theater drew him to community theater and also serving as an assistant drama director at Newton High School. In 1993 he was honored with the New Jersey Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award and he was named to Who’s Who in Education in 1993, 1995 and 2005. In 2017 Mike was inducted into the Newton High School Hall of Fame. Thank you to Greg, Jason, and the talented cast and crews for making this possible. A special thank you to my agent Daniel for believing in my potential and helping me to achieve a dream.
GREG LONGENHAGEN† (Director) is especially proud of the honor of entering his third decade with the Rep as its new Artistic Director. Since 1998, Greg has worked on 60 productions at Florida Rep either as an actor, director, fight choreographer or dialect coach. He was last seen on Florida Rep’s mainstage as Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol. His other acting credits include performances at The Charlotte Repertory Theatre, Riverside Theatre, Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, Florida Stage, Pittsburgh Playhouse, Quantum Theatre, Pirate Playhouse, Trilogy Theatre, Pennsylvania Stage Company, Inner Space Theatre, The Mountain Playhouse, Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre, The Three Rivers Shakespeare Festival, Philadelphia Shakespeare, The Pantages Theatre, The Great American Children’s Theatre, Theatre at Hartwood, The Fulton Theatre, Pittsburgh Musical Theatre, Opera Delaware, St Vincent Theatre, Theatre Row Theatre, and Stage Right. Stage Manager) is thrilled to return to the Florida Rep (and her hometown of Fort Myers) where she previously worked as a stage management intern for the 2012-2013 season and as the AEA ASM for Cabaret in 2018. After received her BA in Theatre and Creative Writing at Florida State University, she moved to Virginia where she worked at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg first as a production stage manager for an outdoor Olympic Style Dive show and an outdoor Christmas Ballet, and finally, as the company’s Show Operations Supervisor. Kasey then moved to Philadelphia to complete her MA in Theatre at Villanova University in 2017, where she worked as the Event and Theatre Coordinator at Rosemont College before venturing back down to

Florida to stage manage Halloween Horror Nights for Universal Studios in Orlando. Working also as a playwright and actor, Kasey wrote an adaptation of Miss Julie for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and performed in The ROI Project for Juniper Productions in the same city. She wants to thank her family and her puppy, Biscuit, for their support, and Florida Rep for allowing her to return, once more, as a part of the Actor’s Equity Association!

RAY RECHT***† (Set Designer) is delighted to be back at Florida Rep, where as an ensemble member, his designs include Native Gardens, How the Other Half Loves, Doublewide, The House of Blue Leaves, Sylvia, One Slight Hitch, Dancing at Lughnasa, Doubt, and others. Broadway designs include The Flowering Peach, Trick, Slab Boys, The Babe, several national tours, and over 20 OffBroadway productions, such as Collected Stories, Marc Salem’s Mind Games, Mrs. Klein and sets for the Drama Desk Awards Shows. He has designed over 200 shows for many regional theaters, such as Riverside Theatre, Asolo Theatre, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, Florida Stage Co., Center Stage, and George Street Theatre. He has designed several feature films and was an art director or assistant art director on many others. He has worked extensively in television, including NBC, Fox, PBS, ABC, over 150 commercials, and many commercial parodies for Saturday Night Live. Internationally, he designed for the Wien Staatsoper Ballet, the Stratford Festival, Ontario, and the Manitoba Theatre Centre. He is the Assistant Chair of the Theatre Department at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, where he is a Professor of Theatre Design. RACHEL VAN PAMEL (Asst. Stage Manager) is delighted to continue her work at Florida Rep with Barefoot in the Park. Earlier this season, she made her Florida Rep debut as Assistant Stage Manager for Always...Patsy Cline. Her regional theatre credits include two seasons with Trinity Shakespeare Festival in Fort Worth, Texas where she worked as Assistant Stage Manager on Measure for Measure, Richard III and Twelfth Night. Rachel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama from University of Dallas where she studied stage management. Rachel worked as Production Stage Manager for many shows throughout college, but her favorite University Theatre credits include The Cherry Orchard and The Skin of Our Teeth.

BWW Review: BAREFOOT IN THE PARK at Florida Repertory Theatre is Charmingly Comical! by Emily Yorgey Jan. 13, 2020
Florida Repertory Theatre's production of BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, directed by Florida Rep's Artistic Director, Greg Longenhagen, is a fun rom-com that tells the story of a newlywed couple moving into a new apartment and all the ups and downs of their first couple weeks of marriage. Hannah McKechnie plays Corie Bratter, the new wife of Brian Hatch's character, Paul Bratter. Corie is thrilled to be moving in to their new apartment together, even if it needs a little bit of love. She has a positive and energetic spirit, though she's sometimes a little dramatic and overly emotional (but really, who isn't at times?). I really enjoyed McKechnie's portrayal of Corie's personality in contrast to Hatch's Paul. Paul is much more serious and logical than Corie, and of course this resulted in some conflict, which was very entertaining to watch. Corie also tries to set her mother, Ethel Banks (Katrina Ferguson), up with their new neighbor, Victor Velasco (V Craig Heidenreich). Victor is a bit more adventurous and wild, whereas Ethel is more proper and traditional, and it was absolutely hilarious to see them interact. During the second act, all four of them go out to dinner, and the aftermath of this had the audience absolutely rolling with laughter.
Victor and Corie's lively personalities and high energy afterward were a stark contrast to the exhausted reactions of Paul and Ethel. It was definitely one of my favorite parts of the show. BAREFOOT IN THE PARK is very lighthearted and fun, but it still holds a great lesson about love and what it takes to resolve conflict. There's a sentimentality to it, and I really appreciate that in a comedy. From Corie and Paul navigating big disagreements within their first several days of marriage to Ethel reigniting romance in her life because of Victor, it was a very cute and enjoyable story. There's something for everyone to enjoy in this sweet, hilarious show; I guarantee you'll find yourself laughing many times throughout it and leaving with a satisfying sense of hope and love. I highly recommend getting your tickets now! BAREFOOT IN THE PARK is playing in Florida Rep's Historic Arcade Theatre now through January 29. “Barefoot in the Park” is playing through Jan. 30 at Florida Repertory Theatre, Fort Myers.
“Barefoot in the Park” is a confusing show to watch. It’s also difficult to review. Yes, I know, it’s Neil Simon. Very early Neil Simon. I hate to say it, but the show’s looking a little creaky and dated. It’s not an historic piece the way “To Kill a Mockingbird” is, or “Last Night at Ballyhoo.” 1/5
But it’s definitely of its time (1963), and in many ways, those times haven’t held up all that well. I’m not sure why Florida Rep chose to stage it. Perhaps they know their audience well and it will be a huge seller for them (they’ve already added another performance). And I admit: I’ve been wrong before about the popularity of shows like this. However, those other plays I just mentioned, which Florida Rep has also staged, point out the errors of prejudice, while “Barefoot” seems to embrace them. The play, which was made into a 1967 movie starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, is about newlyweds Corie and Paul, who move into a fifth-floor walk-up on the east side of midtown Manhattan.

It’s basically a studio apartment. There’s a galley kitchen, and their bedroom can only fit a small bed, not even a twin. The bathroom doesn’t have a tub. Corie (Hannah McKechnie) fails to realize that one of the skylights is broken, making the apartment ice cold. Then there are all those flights of stairs to climb, including the front stoop. It’s a running joke in the play, as everyone stumbles across the threshold as if they’ve just climbed Mount Everest. Two weeks into married life, Corie and Paul have a huge argument and start talking divorce. They say opposites attract, which must be why these two got together. They’re nothing alike. She’s playful and whimsical, adventurous. Paul, a lawyer, is conservative and by-the-rules, a boring stick-in-the mud. Stodgy. (Though he is, I admit, stable and dependable.) It’s difficult to see how these two ever even had a first date, let alone became husband and wife.

That’s one problem with this play: We’re simply not invested in the characters, as only one of them is likeable. (Paul gets a little more interesting when he’s drunk, but then he’s petulant.) Corie’s not practical, but there’s something intriguing there. Ms. McKechnie has a voice that goes into the lower registers, a la Suzanne Pleshette, and does a good job of navigating this difficult role. I’d be interested to see what she could do in a different role. Corie says there are Watchers and Doers in the world, accusing Paul of being a Watcher while saying she’s a Do-er. He is overly cautious, yes, but Nancy STETSON the statement is ironic, considering that women in that time were not allowed to be Do-ers at all, only Watchers on the sidelines, as men — white men — ran the world. I’m not sure if that irony occurred to Mr. Simon at all. Corie’s mother, Ethel (Katrina Ferguson), shows up, providing some comic relief. She’s loopy, but sweet. But here’s part of the problem: Mr. Simon was in his mid 30s when he wrote this play, and he was a product of his times. His women don’t come across as real women but as a guy’s 1950s early- 1960s view of what he thinks women are like: silly, flakey wives and dowdy mothers-in-law who live to shop. Ms. Ferguson does her best with the material, and she had me laughing when her character was three sheets to the wind. But I know I wasn’t the only woman in the audience rolling her eyes when her character counsels Corie that the secret to a good marriage is to make her man feel important. In other words, pump up his ego and cater to his every whim. Corie’s only job is to cook and clean for her husband, waiting all day for him to come home from work. (You just can’t wait for the more radical ’60s and Women’s Liberation to happen to Corie. She’s smart and will go far.) But a major storyline is about setting up Ethel with a man, so she’ll no longer be alone. And that introduces another problem, the character of Victor Velasco, who lives upstairs in a kind of attic, above Corie and Paul.

Craig Heidenreich throws himself fully into the role and has entirely too much fun onstage. His Victor is a fasttalker who claims to be many different things and to know many famous people. Is it all true? Doubtful. But who knows? Costume designer Dina Perez dresses him in a red and black dining jacket, with flashy red shoes as well. By using charm, Mr. Heidenreich keeps his character just this side of creepy (though if any woman met him in real life, they’d run the other way). He’s the type who tries to bed every woman he meets. Things like this were considered acceptable back then (by men). Another stumbling block with this play is how Mr. Simon presents certain people as “other,” as something exotic to be marveled over or laughed about. Being taken to an Armenian restaurant and eating food that isn’t bland and “all- American” is seen as adventurous. The neighbors, with last names such as Gonzales, Bosco and Armandariz, are also seen as fodder for laughter. Then there’s a line about a couple living in the building who are the same sex, but “no one knows which sex they are.” It takes us back to when gays were the object of jokes, an easy punchline, and when non-binary people weren’t even acknowledged. The actors in this play do the best with what they’ve been given. Brendan Powers provides a bright point in two appearances as a telephone repair man. His character is a genial bluecollar worker with a New York accent. Though he has few lines, he makes the most of the ones he does have, getting multiple laughs. (Mike Filipowski, a long-time Florida Rep volunteer, makes an even shorter appearance as a deliveryman.) A scene at the end of Act I, added by director Greg Longenhagen, has the stage crew, dressed as movers, bringing in all the furniture and accessories, decorating the formerly bare apartment in great Mid-century Modern décor. Mr. Velasco directs them, pointing with a riding crop. It was a clever way to change the scene, rather than doing it at intermission. And it was something fresh and entertaining. I only wish I could say the same for “Barefoot in the Park” as a story. Maybe for some, it’s a nostalgic walk down Memory Lane. And for those who wish we were still living in ’50s, it will hold great appeal. But Mr. Simon wrote better — and funnier —plays, plays that still make us laugh continuously. Unfortunately, this one does not hold up as well. ¦ 4/5
