DEAR FRIEND & THEATRE LOVER, Welcome to Florida Repertory Theatre’s 2023-2024 Season—our 26th year as a cultural and artistic home in Southwest Florida! Whether this is your first visit or your hundred-and-first, we are grateful you’re here. Thank you for buying a ticket or donating to support live theatre in our community.

This season also marks my fifth anniversary as your Producing Artistic Director.

When I began this journey five years ago, Florida Rep was in a strong position, and for two seasons we increased the number of patrons we served- including area children, strengthened our reputation for high-quality productions, and even received a transformational gift making it possible for us to purchase our historic home in the River District. The future looked bright. What I couldn’t have foreseen were momentous challenges coming our way—a global pandemic followed by a devastating hurricane and storm surge that tested our entire region.

The beginning of a new season is always a time to look back and reflect, but this season’s opening is particularly moving because it marks two years since reopening after the pandemic and one year since we weathered the storm of the century. As I look back at those trying days following Ian, I’m not emotional because of all we lost, but rather what we gained.

Florida Rep’s dedicated staff and artists came together to clean up and reopen our theatres. And despite great personal losses, our community of supporters rallied to donate time, resources, and much-needed funds. Against all odds, we managed to open the season on time. So as we look ahead to Season 26 and beyond, I know that there is no challenge we cannot overcome together and vow that Florida Rep will be here to offer you top-notch productions and a cultural outlet for many moons to come.

After all we’ve been through, we know you’re looking for entertainment that offers an escape. And while we have options for those looking for thoughtprovoking theatre, our 2023-2024 Season features a record number of musicals, comedies, and family-friendly selections. Florida Rep is here to serve our

community as we continue to heal and restore. As we do so, let’s dance in the aisles and share a few laughs!

This season, we’ve worked hard to prepare a nine-show line-up that will enlighten, excite, and entertain – and we hope to see you in the audience for every one of the stories that celebrate the iconic voices who’ve made the American experience rich through the 20th and 21st centuries.

This season’s plays feature a farce from one of the great American comedy writers, a feel-good comedy about finding common ground, a clever new Sherlock Holmes/Charles Dickens whodunnit mash-up at the holidays, an American classic, and a few thought-provoking dramas. This season’s musical selections represent a diverse songbook perfect for any music lover – from Rodgers & Hart to Hank Williams, and of course the powerful female voices of the 1960s. Our signature “wide variety” is on full display this season, and there is something for every theatre lover.

In the age of social media and streaming entertainment, there is nothing quite as magical as sitting down in a darkened theatre to experience a live performance— because we’ve custom-made every detail just for you! This season we invite you to experience the magic of live theatre however you prefer: “sit back and relax” or “lean forward and engage.”

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to our 26th season.

Last year was difficult for all, but with your generous support and patronage, we were able to survive Ian and had our theaters up and running in record time.

We especially want to thank the State of Florida and particularly Representative Spencer Roach for their amazing support.

Florida Rep is not just a professional theatre, but a vibrant and vital educational institution. Our Education Department operates a summer arts intensive camp, a Theatre for Young Audiences series that brings the arts to life for thousands of Lee County students each year, and a Conservatory Program for more advanced students. This year, we are proud to partner with Pace Center for Girls, Valerie’s House, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to reach out to even more young people.

Florida Rep also helps to develop new works for audiences of the future. Since 2014, our PlayLab Festival has invited playwrights from all over the country to submit their new offerings to be presented as developmental readings. A few of these plays have had their world premiere or regional premiere on one of our stages—including one coming up in the fall of 2023!

A LETTER FROM YOUR MAYOR Dear Florida Repertory Theatre Patrons, On behalf of the Historic City of Palms, I am thrilled to welcome you to the 26th Season of Florida Repertory Theatre, one of Southwest Florida’s most important cultural and educational institutions.

The great Laurence Olivier once said “I believe that in a great city, or even in a small city or a village, a great theatre is the outward and visible sign of an inward and probable culture.”

Throughout the years, Florida Rep has remained a cultural cornerstone of our community. They lead the way on the reopening of Downtown business after Ian. I was encouraged and inspired by the music, drama and laughter resonating through the town, as audiences returned to the Historic Arcade Theatre and thus, patronized our local shops and restaurants. Through the Florida Rep Education program, performing arts training including acting and tech theatre classes, tours to the schools, college-level internships and theatre appreciation, nurtured people of all ages. The resiliency of our city is evident now more than ever.

We know that, as they celebrate their 26th Season, Florida Rep will continue its mission to provide first class regional theatre for our historic River District and all of Southwest Florida. Please give a hearty congratulations to Producing Artistic Director Greg Longenhagen, Executive Director John Martin, and their dedicated staff, talented acting company and award-winning directors, designers, and guest artists for helping to improve our quality of life, through the arts.

Florida Rep’s Theatre Conservatory programs offer young artists an introduction to the professional theatre experience and culminate with a public performance in the Historic Arcade Theatre.

Disney’s Broadway classic is based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature and includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice.

This 2-week training program is designed for students ages 12–18 and is taught by professionals in the theatre tech field. Students will learn about stage management, lighting, sound, set design/props, costuming, and stage makeup.

At the conclusion, students will be assigned a mentor from our Florida Repertory Production Team and given on-the-job training in one of the technical field positions as they prepare to work backstage for the Conservatory production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Auditions for students 12–18 will be announced in the Spring.

Performances will be offered in May 2024.

Classes will be held in March 2024 with performances in May.

MARK SHANAHAN (Playwright) is the author A Sherlock Carol (nominated Best Play by The Off-Broadway Alliance, 2022, playing annually in New York and London) and his adaptation of Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, premiered earlier this year at the Tony Award-winning Alley Theatre. Other writing credits include the Off-Broadway and regional hit comedy, The Dingdong (Florida Rep production, 2016), A Merry Little Christmas Carol (Florida Rep production, 2018), and The Chronology Protection Case (adaptation, Edgar Award nominee), and co-author with Gibson Frasier of the short film Kill Me (Adirondack Film Festival.) Mark is the writer and creator of the acclaimed, White Heron Radio Theatre (NPR’s WNCK, Spotify, iTunes and other major audio platforms), featuring original radio drama of the supernatural performed by renowned Broadway and Hollywood actors. As a director, Mark’s work has been seen on the New York and London stage as well as The Alley, Virginia Stage, Irish Rep, Mile Square Theatre, White Heron Theatre, George Street Playhouse, Theatre Squared, Florida Rep, Weston Playhouse, Florida Studio Theatre, Penguin Rep, The Fulton, Merrimack Rep, Orlando Shakespeare Festival, Cape Playhouse and others. I

t is difficult to offer insight about Mark Shanahan’s A Sherlock Carol without ruining the fun about to take place! As soon as the lights go down and the first words are spoken, you won’t have any trouble getting up to speed. After all, when you hear the name Ebeneezer Scrooge, an immediate image should come to mind along with his familiar “Bah! Humbug!” Similarly, if I mention the most famous detective who lives at 221B Baker Street, your mind’s eye will conjure a deerskin cap, an Inverness cloak, and the silhouette of the world’s greatest solver of mysteries most impossible, Mr. Sherlock Holmes. It’s elementary!

You know these characters. They’ve been swirling around in the Western world’s consciousness since their birth.

What I will share is that Mark has written a rich, entertaining, and moving piece of theatre that brings these two characters into one world – his world. Mark understands these characters and their fiction intimately and has woven a tale that does justice to both icons. The story is definitely a Christmas story – with all the trimmings, however, at its core, there is a mystery to solve - a murder most foul, of course!

Mark has created a piece that is wholly theatrical with magic fundamentally tied to the strengths of live theatre. This love letter to theatrical storytelling includes a dramatic framework of mystery that only Arthur Conan Doyle’s great Sherlock Holmes could solve. The core Christmas story themes of charity, mercy, forgiveness, love, family, and redemption are layered in and designed to remain with us just as Charles Dickens would have demanded.

I can assure you, the spirit of Christmas is alive and well in A Sherlock Carol.

I invite you to set your cares aside for a couple of hours. Join us in foggy, mysterious 19th-century London. Lean in as you are drawn into the mystery, lean back into the warm and satisfying embrace of a Christmas story, well-told. Enjoy the colorful array of characters [suspects?] played by six very talented actors who will switch from one character to another at the drop of a hat, literally and figuratively, along with wonderful design that will elevate your experience, spark your imagination, and place you in the best of hands as you enjoy a healthy dose of holiday cheer. Please turn off your cell phones, the service is lousy in the 19th century!

WHO’S WHO CHRISSY ALBANESE (Actor 2) was last seen in Florida Rep’s 2020 production of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. She is so happy to be back playing pretend after spending the last several years being an amateur Muay Thai fighter in NYC. He has also performed with other major theaters such as the Public Theatre in New York, Cincinnati Playhouse, Cleveland Playhouse, Arena Stage, and Milwaukee Rep. Representative roles include Jamie in Moon for the Misbegotten, Alceste in The Misanthrope, Charlie in The Foreigner, Enobarbus in Antony and Cleopatra, and Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. He is a 2009 recipient of the prestigious Theatre Communications Group Distinguished Artist Grant.

JASON PARRISH*† (Actor 3) is thrilled to be back onstage in another play by Mark Shanahan! Now in his 19th Season with Florida Rep, Jason is an Ensemble Member and the company’s Associate Artistic Director.
