WELCOME TO

DEAR FRIEND, Welcome to Florida Repertory Theatre’s 22nd season! Last year was my first season as your Artistic Director, and what an amazing journey it has been! We saw so many successes for Florida Rep. Million Dollar Quartet broke all records for a single production, Fences marked our first outing with the legendary playwright, August Wilson; and our educational productions, camps, and outreach programs enriched the lives of more than 45,000 area young people. We were blessed with a huge donation from a group of anonymous donors that enabled us to purchase the entire Bradford block, which includes the Historic Arcade Theatre and ArtStage Studio. We have our work cut out renovating, improving, and managing the property. But for the moment, I am thrilled to say we are truly part of the fabric of the River District, and for the first time in Florida Rep’s existence, we are able to share great performances from stages that belong to us! In addition to those who made this transformational gift possible, I want to personally thank the more than 1,200 donors and sponsors for their continued generous support. Because of you, Florida Rep is able to provide excellence in art and entertainment. With you by our side we will deliver great theatre long into the future. You truly are our angels! I am so pleased to welcome back our returning audience members and to introduce the first-timers to Florida Repertory Theatre, hailed as “one of America’s TOP repertory companies” by The Wall Street Journal. FLORIDA REPERTORY THEATRE 2019-2020 SEASON

OUR 22nd SEASON

yourself for a one-time event that can never be repeated! Unlike many other art forms, theatre exists in the moment and in real time. If this is your first experience at Florida Rep, I hope you will be excited by the quality of the performance and the caliber of the artists at work and consider joining our family as a season ticket holder. If you are one of our most ardent fans returning to experience the joy of live theatre, we thank you for choosing to spend your time with us again this year. For 2019-2020 we are delighted to bring you another season of spectacular theatre. As many of you know, there is very little time for rest here at Florida Rep. When the lights went out on last year’s final production, our staff began putting in countless hours reading and selecting plays, auditioning actors, building scenery, designing lighting, constructing costumes, marketing our season, and making sure the lights are on across our downtown campuses. I can assure you the Florida Rep team is working diligently to make sure that Season 22 will offer the absolute finest theatre in Southwest Florida! The shows we’ve selected are a mixture of the best classic comedies, farces, musicals, and dramas to engage the heart and mind, perhaps offer a glimpse of a different side of life... or to maybe just allow you to escape into another world. As our performance begins, I hope you will always remember...this is your theatre, and when it comes to Florida Rep’s professional Equity productions, everything we do is for you!

A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRPERSON On behalf of the Board of Directors, welcome to our 22nd Season at Florida Repertory Theatre. Florida Repertory Theatre’s previous season closed on May 19 and boasted record-breaking attendance, extended performance runs, and artistic and educational milestones. The theatre’s 2019-2020 nine-show season opens with the musical, Always… Patsy Cline in the ArtStage Studio Theatre and Ken Ludwig’s The Fox on the Fairway in the Historic Arcade Theatre. Seven more productions are scheduled, and you will be treated to a wide variety of work including the multiple Tony-nominated & most produced play in America, A Doll’s House, Part 2, a classic romantic comedy by Neil Simon, a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere, a suspenseful thriller, 2014’s Tony-winning BEST MUSICAL, and more. This past year was momentous for the Florida Rep. Thanks to a transformational gift from a group of anonymous donors, Florida Repertory Theatre has purchased the Bradford block in downtown Fort Myers, which contains the Historic Arcade Theatre, ArtStage Studio Theatre, and other Florida Rep facilities, as well as the parking lot across Bay Street. The acquisition secures the company’s future into its next twenty-two years and beyond. Truly a milestone for our Theatre!! Greg Longenhagen is approaching his first anniversary as Artistic Director. Greg has been outstanding in his new role and together with the rest of the Florida Rep family, the management team, staff, actors and ensemble, has continued to validate The Wall Street Journal’s acclaimed drama critic and award-winning author, Terry Teachout, when he reported that Florida Repertory Theatre is “One of America’s Top Repertory Companies!” In addition to our work on stage as a regional theatre company, Florida Rep has an active and vital Education and Outreach arm that reaches more than 45,000 children and young adults annually—and that number continues to grow. It is comprised of the Theatre for Young Audiences and Lunchbox Theatre, Camp Florida Rep, an audition-only Theatre Conservatory Program, classes for youth and adults, and artist-in-residency programs. I encourage all of you to attend one of these wonderful productions where you will see the stars of tomorrow. Florida Rep’s Board of Directors is responsible for the financial health of the theatre, and we work hard all year to raise the funds to keep these vital community programs going. We also strive to keep your ticket prices as reasonable as possible, all the while bringing you the highest quality theatre in Southwest Florida. Your donations as Patrons support more than one third of our budget and are critical to our success. Help us continue to provide the best artists, the best scripts, and the most fun shows in Southwest Florida. We are also thankful for the continued support and encouragement from the City of Fort Myers, The Community Redevelopment Agency and all our tremendous sponsors and donors.

her mind matters Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for youth ages 10-24 in Florida, and sadly, our state is not alone in this crisis. Nationally, there is a shortage of providers, and the average time from onset of symptoms to intervention is 8 to 10 years. For many children it’s too late. Children who suffer from depression, anxiety and trauma need our help!

A LETTER FROM YOUR STATE SENATOR Dear Florida Repertory Theatre patrons, Welcome to Downtown Fort Myers and the Florida Repertory Theatre for its much-anticipated 22nd Season. Under new leadership of Greg Longenhagen and John Martin Florida Rep is in capable hands as it continues its third decade in operation. What a monumental time for Florida Repertory Theatre! In 1998 Florida Repertory Theatre, called “One of America’s Top Repertory Companies” by The Wall Street Journal, chose to make its home in our historic Arcade Theatre, breathing new life into the building that was once a favorite of Thomas Edison, as well as his friends Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. Now in 2019, Florida Rep owns its historic home in downtown Fort Myers, signaling to its patrons, Southwest Florida, and to residents across the country that professional theatre will always have a home in Fort Myers. I want to add my sincere gratitude to the group of dedicated theatre patrons who made this monumental expansion possible! Florida Rep has become an important cultural and educational institution here in Southwest Florida. Each year they draw well over 105,000 patrons to the Fort Myers River District, becoming a vital part of the revitalization that has occurred downtown. They also serve more than 45,000 children and their families each year through innovative cultural education programs, including my daughter. The Florida Repertory Theatre is an important economic engine in the region as the largest non-profit organization in Lee County Enjoy your show at a thriving professional theatre company that The Wall Street Journal called “One of the top regional troupes in the U.S.” See you at Florida Rep this season and for seasons to come! Sincerely,

Lizbeth Benacquisto Senator, 30th District

Based on a story in The Weekly World News, Bat Boy: The Musical is a musical comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. For lack of a better solution, the local sheriff brings Bat Boy to the home of the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker. Bat Boy is happy with his new life, but when he naively tries to fit in with the narrow-minded people of Hope Falls, they turn on him. Dr. Paker’s daughter, Shelley, and Bat Boy, who have fallen in love, run away together, but their happiness is shattered when the entire town hears the shocking story of Bat Boy’s unholy origin.
