DEAR FRIEND & THEATRE LOVER,
Welcome to Florida Repertory Theatre’s 2023-2024 Season—our 26th year as a cultural and artistic home in Southwest Florida! Whether this is your first visit or your hundred-and-first, we are grateful you’re here. Thank you for buying a ticket or donating to support live theatre in our community.
This season also marks my fifth anniversary as your Producing Artistic Director. When I began this journey five years ago, Florida Rep was in a strong position, and for two seasons we increased the number of patrons we served- including area children, strengthened our reputation for high-quality productions, and even received a transformational gift making it possible for us to purchase our historic home in the River District. The future looked bright. What I couldn’t have foreseen were momentous challenges coming our way—a global pandemic followed by a devastating hurricane and storm surge that tested our entire region.
The beginning of a new season is always a time to look back and reflect, but this season’s opening is particularly moving because it marks two years since reopening after the pandemic and one year since we weathered the storm of the century. As I look back at those trying days following Ian, I’m not emotional because of all we lost, but rather what we gained.
Florida Rep’s dedicated staff and artists came together to clean up and reopen our theatres. And despite great personal losses, our community of supporters rallied to donate time, resources, and much-needed funds. Against all odds, we managed to open the season on time. So as we look ahead to Season 26 and beyond, I know that there is no challenge we cannot overcome together and vow that Florida Rep will be here to offer you top-notch productions and a cultural outlet for many moons to come.
After all we’ve been through, we know you’re looking for entertainment that offers an escape. And while we have options for those looking for thoughtprovoking theatre, our 2023-2024 Season features a record number of musicals, comedies, and family-friendly selections. Florida Rep is here to serve our
FLORIDA REPERTORY THEATRE 2023-2024 SEASON 4 FROM YOUR PRODUCING
community as we continue to heal and restore. As we do so, let’s dance in the aisles and share a few laughs!
This season, we’ve worked hard to prepare a nine-show line-up that will enlighten, excite, and entertain – and we hope to see you in the audience for every one of the stories that celebrate the iconic voices who’ve made the American experience rich through the 20th and 21st centuries.
This season’s plays feature a farce from one of the great American comedy writers, a feel-good comedy about finding common ground, a clever new Sherlock Holmes/Charles Dickens whodunnit mash-up at the holidays, an American classic, and a few thought-provoking dramas. This season’s musical selections represent a diverse songbook perfect for any music lover – from Rodgers & Hart to Hank Williams, and of course the powerful female voices of the 1960s. Our signature “wide variety” is on full display this season, and there is something for every theatre lover.
In the age of social media and streaming entertainment, there is nothing quite as magical as sitting down in a darkened theatre to experience a live performance— because we’ve custom-made every detail just for you! This season we invite you to experience the magic of live theatre however you prefer: “sit back and relax” or “lean forward and engage.”
Thank you for coming to the theatre. Enjoy the show.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to our 26th season.
Last year was difficult for all, but with your generous support and patronage, we were able to survive Ian and had our theaters up and running in record time. We especially want to thank the State of Florida and particularly Representative Spencer Roach for their amazing support.
Florida Rep is not just a professional theatre, but a vibrant and vital educational institution. Our Education Department operates a summer arts intensive camp, a Theatre for Young Audiences series that brings the arts to life for thousands of Lee County students each year, and a Conservatory Program for more advanced students. This year, we are proud to partner with Pace Center for Girls, Valerie’s House, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to reach out to even more young people.
Florida Rep also helps to develop new works for audiences of the future. Since 2014, our PlayLab Festival has invited playwrights from all over the country to submit their new offerings to be presented as developmental readings. A few of these plays have had their world premiere or regional premiere on one of our stages—including one coming up in the fall of 2023!
We want to thank all of you, our wonderful patrons, for the many ways that you support us. It’s only through your financial support that we are able to present the Broadway-quality productions you deserve. Ticket sales alone cannot sustain us, so please consider donating today. Your contribution secures the future of Florida Rep as a vibrant part of the cultural landscape of Southwest Florida.
Most importantly, we invite you to sit back and enjoy the show!

Dear Florida Repertory Theatre Patrons,
On behalf of the Historic City of Palms, I am thrilled to welcome you to the 26th Season of Florida Repertory Theatre, one of Southwest Florida’s most important cultural and educational institutions.
The great Laurence Olivier once said “I believe that in a great city, or even in a small city or a village, a great theatre is the outward and visible sign of an inward and probable culture.”
Throughout the years, Florida Rep has remained a cultural cornerstone of our community. They lead the way on the reopening of Downtown business after Ian. I was encouraged and inspired by the music, drama and laughter resonating through the town, as audiences returned to the Historic Arcade Theatre and thus, patronized our local shops and restaurants. Through the Florida Rep Education program, performing arts training including acting and tech theatre classes, tours to the schools, college-level internships and theatre appreciation, nurtured people of all ages. The resiliency of our city is evident now more than ever.
We know that, as they celebrate their 26th Season, Florida Rep will continue its mission to provide first class regional theatre for our historic River District and all of Southwest Florida. Please give a hearty congratulations to Producing Artistic Director Greg Longenhagen, Executive Director John Martin, and their dedicated staff, talented acting company and award-winning directors, designers, and guest artists for helping to improve our quality of life, through the arts.
But most importantly, I thank you, the audiences of Florida Rep, for being here and supporting this cultural gem, found only right here in Fort Myers. I’ll see you at the theatre!
Yours in public service,
Kevin B. Anderson Mayor

DIRECTOR’S NOTE
In 1997, during a chance meeting outside a Manhattan theater, I crossed the street to offer my condolences to a friend who’d recently lost his mom. He was grateful for my outreach, and within minutes of the exchange, he suddenly turned to the friend accompanying him to say, “Oh this was meant to be! Lynnette Barkley - Michael Marotta! Michael Marotta – Lynnette Barkley!” Lynnette was about to start rehearsals for a Rodgers and Hart show she’d been working on for quite some time, and there was one role she had trouble casting. Two days later I was auditioning for her in her office, and by the end of the week, I was on my way to Palm Beach, Florida to start rehearsals.

No stranger to the songs of Rodgers and Hart, I worked hard to learn the stunning yet complicated harmonies and arrangements and soon found a new love and respect for a selection of songs considered by some to be the most romantic of all time. Richard Rodgers was a genius with melodies but Larry Hart’s lyrics oozed with sophistication, a clever yet wistful longing filled with passion, wit, desire, sometimes disappointment, and hope. Always hope. I am so grateful to revisit this songbook. I hope you’ll feel now as I did then and discover a newfound appreciation for the timeless words and melodies of Rodgers and Hart.

ABOUT
RODGERS AND HART
Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart made their professional debut with the song “Any Old Place With You,” featured in the 1919 Broadway musical comedy A Lonely Romeo. Their breakthrough came with the score for a 1925 charity show, The Garrick Gaieties, which introduced the classic valentine to their hometown, “Manhattan.” From 1920 to 1930 Rodgers & Hart wrote an astonishing array of musical comedies for Broadway and London’s West End. At their pinnacle, the team was writing an average of four new shows a year.
In 1930 the team relocated to Hollywood, where they contributed songs and wrote the scores for several movie musicals, including the landmark Love Me Tonight starring Maurice Chevalier; The Phantom President starring George M. Cohan; Hallelujah, I’m a Bum starring Al Jolson; and Mississippi starring Bing Crosby and W.C. Fields. Hart also provided the translation for a 1934 MGM version of Lehar’s The Merry Widow, and in the same year, wrote with Rodgers their only “pop song” — “Blue Moon.”
Rodgers & Hart were lured back to New York by legendary Broadway producer Billy Rose in 1935 to write the songs for his circus musical spectacular, Jumbo. Their score featured “The Most Beautiful Girl In The World,” “My Romance” and “Little Girl Blue.” From 1936 to 1943 Rodgers & Hart wrote a series of Broadway musical comedies, each of which seemed to top the one before in terms of innovation and box office success. On Your Toes, Babes In Arms, I’d Rather Be Right, I Married An Angel, The Boys From Syracuse, Too Many Girls, Higher And Higher, Pal Joey and By Jupiter dazzled Broadway in spectacular succession, and collectively offered an array of classic songs, many of which are featured in our production of Beguiled Again
Hart passed away in 1943 and for the next two decades, Rodgers collaborated exclusively with Oscar Hammerstein II to create a host of iconic musicals including The Sound of Music, The King and I, South Pacific, and more. Following Hammerstein’s death in 1960, Rodgers continued to write for the musical stage until his death in 1979.
Beguiled Again was developed at Florida Stage in Manalapan, Florida. Conceived by J. Barry Lewis, Lynette Barkley, and Craig D. Ames (who also arranged the music), the revue illuminates the astonishing breadth of the Rodgers and Hart songbook. The show won the Carbonell Award in 1997, which recognizes and honors excellence in theater and the arts in South Florida.
