WELCOME TO OUR 25th ANNIVERSARY SEASON!

It’s hard to believe a quarter century has passed since our first production, because it feels like it was just yesterday when I first stepped onto the Historic Arcade stage in the fall of 1998. I must admit, both Florida Rep and I have gathered a wealth of experiences since that inaugural season. Hundreds of productions, thousands of actors and designers, technicians, interns, and countless students and patrons have walked through our doors to be moved by the work on our stages.

Thanks to the City of Fort Myers, the Community Redevelopment Agency, and the vision of our founders, Florida Rep has impacted a generation of young people and a generation of theatre goers and helped to make downtown Fort Myers a destination for entertainment and the arts.

Throughout the years, I’ve had the pleasure of working at Florida Rep as an actor, fight choreographer, dialect coach and stage director, and even seen through my children’s eyes the impact our Education Programs make for so many young people. And now, in my fifth season as your Producing Artistic Director, it is an honor to look back on the journey, the countless creative professionals who make working at Florida Rep their passion, and the varied stories we’ve brought to life on our stages.

Storytelling is at the heart of live theatre. Telling stories well is what professional producing theatres do best and throughout our 25-year history, Florida Rep has developed a reputation as one of the top repertory theatres in the business –that’s according to local and national reviews, but more importantly, it’s also the opinion of our loyal audience members.

This season we are telling stories about family, connection, and love. Many of the plays chronicle relationships between wildly different people finding common ground, some provide an escape; others ask us to consider the world from someone else’s perspective, and our spring musical promises to have you dancing in the aisles – again!

FLORIDA REPERTORY THEATRE 2022-2023 SEASON 4 FROM YOUR

Our Jubilee Season line-up will take you on a journey through time and place from Victorian England, to a 1950’s gritty Philadelphia bar, to a Catholic suburban home in the 1970’s, to a serene New England lake house in the 1980’s, plus the contemporary settings of a senior living complex, a Manhattan high rise lobby, and more.

As you immerse yourself in these terrific comedies, thought-provoking dramas, and poignant musical offerings, you will be led by some of our signature Ensemble members alongside frequent guest artists and some fresh new faces and creative works soon to become part of the Florida Rep legacy. Our visiting professionals and local creative team are dedicated to bringing you the finest in live professional theatre – a tradition we established, and continue to maintain, since we opened our doors.

Downtown Fort Myers was a different place in the late 1990s. It was not the vibrant community center we know now – teaming with busy restaurants, shops, art centers, hotels, and more. At that time, the River District was ripe for rejuvenation and Florida Repertory Theatre was one of the early pioneers. When Florida Rep took residence in the deserted Historic Arcade we became a key player in the downtown renaissance. Thanks to the dedication of our company members and ever-growing loyal patrons and supporters, we now look back with pride, and look forward to all that the future has to offer.

The play you are about to watch is a unique production designed, crafted, directed, and cast specifically for you. You won’t see this version of this play anywhere else, and our team takes great pride in the work they do to delight, entertain, and enrich your life. On behalf of all of us at Florida Rep, we wish to thank you for your patronage, your support, and for joining us at the theatre. We look forward to sharing the next twenty-five years with you.

Welcome to our 25th Anniversary Silver Jubilee Season!

On behalf of the Board of Directors, our dedicated staff, our volunteer corps, and Florida Rep’s Ensemble of Artists, I am honored to welcome you to this most exciting season. As we celebrate 25 years of excellence in professional and educational theatre, we’re also celebrating you. Your support and patronage over these many years are what makes us strong, and every one of the plays and musicals showcased on our stage in this anniversary season were chosen with you in mind. We want to make you laugh, sing along, and reflect on some thought-provoking ideas.

Entertaining, exciting, and enlightening you has been our aim for twenty-four years, and it is hard to believe that much time has gone by and that we’ve brought so many stories to life in the beautiful Historic Arcade Theatre and the intimately renovated ArtStage Studio theatre. Even after seeing so many stellar productions, I remember so clearly our inaugural 1998-1999 Season. Our first production, Noises Off by Michael Frayn, starring Helen Mutch and Maurice Schlaffer, had those first audiences laughing in the aisles, setting the bar for what was to follow. Noises Off was so successful that we revived it in our 13th Season to great acclaim – and that production featured Jason Parrish, early in his career here, alongside Ensemble Member, Viki Boyle, in her Florida Rep debut.

Looking back at the more than 200 plays we’ve produced, I am struck by how much joy we’ve brought to this community: laughter, music, old favorites, regional and world premieres, and nationally acclaimed productions hailed as “profoundly satisfying” by The Wall Street Journal. As a longtime Board Member, I’ve seen nearly every production, and it is hard to pick a fondest memory, but a highlight was watching my husband make his “professional” debut with a walk-on role in Inherit the Wind in our second season. As you settle into the theatre tonight, I urge you to think back on your history with Florida Rep – whether you’ve been a longtime patron or whether this is your first visit with us. I hope you’ll feel as grateful as I do that Florida Rep and its staff are here working to keep professional theatre alive in Downtown Fort Myers.

In addition to the professional productions on our stages, our Education Department is critical to our success and plays an important role in our community’s cultural health. Since its founding, Florida Rep’s Education Department has offered programming for young people because exposure to the arts is vital to a child’s development. We’re proud to offer Classes, Summer Arts Intensives, Theatre for Young Audiences that has brought theater to thousands of Lee county school students, and our Conservatory Program that reaches out to advanced-level students of all ages, producing professional caliber plays and musicals. Last fall our Conservatory celebrated a milestone when a cast of local young artists took the stage with a cast of professionals to bring West Side Story to life as a co-production in the Arcade Theatre, building a bridge between professional artists and those in training.

It is also vital that Florida Rep give back to the industry by nurturing new works. Our PlayLab Festival invites playwrights from all over the country to submit their new offerings to be presented as developmental readings. Since its inception in 2014, PlayLab has produced 32 play readings, including two commissioned works for young audiences, and is responsible for six world premiere or regional premiere productions – including Split in Three, The Dingdong, Doublewide, and Alabaster.

No matter what keeps you coming back – dramas, new works, educational productions, comedies, or sensational musicals, Florida Rep’s wide variety means there is something for everyone. We want to thank you for all the ways you support us – from major donations to purchasing a ticket. It’s only through your financial support that we are able to present the Broadway-quality productions you deserve. Ticket sales alone cannot sustain us, and we urge you to consider donating today – and contributing to the cultural landscape in Southwest Florida.

Most importantly, we invite you to sit back and enjoy the show!

FLORIDA REPERTORY THEATRE 2022-2023 SEASON 9 A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRPERSON

Dear Florida Repertory Theatre Patrons,

Happy Silver Anniversary! I am delighted to welcome you as Florida Rep celebrates 25 years of presenting award-winning regional theater at the historic Arcade Theatre and Art Stage Studio Theatre.

The stage lights shone brightly last season with the return to live theatre! What a thrill once again to come together to experience theatre, that cultural phenomenon that connects our community through the human experience— our history, our heritage and the way we relate to one another.

Undoubtedly one of Southwest Florida’s most important cultural and educational institutions, Florida Repertory Theatre unites our community by serving over 45,000 young people and their families each year through a variety of exceptional arts education and outreach programs. Florida Rep provides jobs, purchases goods and services from within the community, welcomes nearly 100,000 patrons annually to the Historic River District, showcasing them as a cornerstone of the Fort Myers economy.

This is certainly an Anniversary worth celebrating and I am delighted to share this with you. Congratulations again to Florida Rep! And many wishes for a bright and successful future.

AGATHA CHRISTIE is known throughout the world as the Queen of Crime. Her books have sold over a billion copies in English with another billion in foreign languages. She is the most widely published author of all time and, in many languages, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. She is the author of 66 crime novels, 150 short story collections, over 20 plays, and six novels written under the name Mary Westmacott. Her work includes Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and the genre-defining And Then There Were None

Agatha Christie’s first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, was written towards the end of the First World War, in which she served in the VAD. In it she created Hercule Poirot, the little Belgian detective who was destined to become the most popular detective in crime fiction since Sherlock Holmes. It was published by Bodley Head in 1920.

In 1926, after averaging a book a year, Agatha Christie wrote her first masterpiece. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was the first of her books to be published by Collins and marked the beginning of an authorpublisher relationship that lasted for 50 years and well over 70 books. Ackroyd was also the first of Agatha Christie’s books to be dramatized – under the title Alibi – and to have a successful run in London’s West End.

By 1930, Agatha had introduced a new character to act as a detective. When she created Miss Marple, Agatha did not expect her to become Poirot’s rival, but with The Murder at the Vicarage, Miss Marple’s first full-length outing, it appeared she had produced another popular and enduring character.

The Mousetrap, her most successful play of all, opened in 1952 and is the longestrunning play in history.

Agatha Christie was made a dame in 1971. She died in 1976.

Agatha Christie Limited (ACL) has been managing the literary and media rights to Agatha Christie’s works around the world since 1955, working with the best talents in film, television, publishing, stage and on digital platforms to ensure that Christie’s work continues to reach new audiences in innovative ways and to the highest standard. The company is managed by Christie’s great grandson James Prichard.

A TIMELINE OF ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE

Fall 1998

Florida Rep is founded by Robert Cacioppo & Carrie Lund. After 10 successful seasons producing professional theatre, Cacioppo & Lund bring their troupe from Sanibel to Downtown Fort Myers. With the help of Don Paight and the Fort Myers Redevelop ment Agency, the Historic Arcade Theatre becomes a hub for the arts in the struggling Downtown River District.

The inaugural season opens with Noises O by Michael Frayn.

*Fun fact: Then a traveling actor, Greg Longenhagen, was meant to star in the production, but a cartilage tear knee injury during dress rehearsal sidelined the 30-year-old actor just before opening. Longenhagen now serves as Producing Artistic Director.

Spring 2000

After a full season producing a wide variety of comedies, dramas, and musicals, Florida Rep makes a statement in the spring of 2000 with the modern American classic Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence & Robert E. Lee. The play boasts a cast of over 50 professional and community actors – and remains the largest productions (in terms of people) ever to be produced on the Arcade stage.

Fall 2001

John Martin joins the sta as Managing Director. He is tasked with charting a new nancial course for the edgling company, and begins to focus on Florida Rep’s nancial health. Now the company’s Executive Director, Martin is Florida Rep’s longest-serving sta member beginning his 21st season in 2022.
