ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT TED SWINDLEY is internationally known as writer and director of the popular musical, Always… Patsy Cline. He is the founding artistic director of Stages Rep in Houston, Texas. He was also named to Esquire Magazine’s register of outstanding Americans in the arts and letters. Mr. Swindley was the recipient of the Los Angeles Dramalogue award for outstanding direction of Carnal Knowledge by Jules Feiffer. Currently, he is president of Ted Swindley Productions, Inc., a theatrical licensing and consulting company, and continues his 30-year career writing plays and musicals, consulting and mentoring playwrights, as well as directing plays for various theatres throughout the U.S. and abroad. This rendering marks Becky’s 30th production of this beautiful play, performing as either Patsy or Louise on stages across the country from New York (Off-Broadway) to California and winning a few acting awards along the way. Her research has led to the pleasure of befriending a few of Patsy’s family members, band members, and the real Louise Seger Zurbuchen. Other New York credits include the Broadway and National Tour of Les Misérables, (Mme. Thenardier), Off-Broadway’s Frankenstein (cast recording), Meet Me in St Louis, Forbidden Broadway, Sessions, and the new play, Stiff. She spent several seasons as Mrs. Claus in the Christmas Spectacular at the Radio City Music Hall as well. MAUREEN HEFFERNAN†** (Director) is delighted to be returning to Florida Repertory Theatre where most recently, she staged Daryl
Lisa Fazio’s Safety Net as part of last season’s PlayLab. As a member of the Ensemble of Artists, she has directed 15 productions including The Miracle Worker and the world premiere of Doublewide. Her productions of Dancing at Lughnasa, Sylvia (2011), and The Little Foxes all of which received praise from the Wall Street Journal among other critics. Over the past 35 years, Maureen has directed more than 95 professional theatrical productions nationally. Besides Florida Rep, some of her favorite theaters include New York’s John Houseman Theater and Ensemble Studio Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, PlayMakers Repertory Company, and Pennsylvania Stage Company. Maureen also served as Artistic Director for George Street Playhouse in New Jersey, and as Acting Artistic Director at Delaware Theater Company. She also directed the world premiere of Fixed at the Passage Theatre in Trenton, NJ. Maureen has been recognized as a leader in arts education throughout the country and as an innovator of arts programming for special populations. She was the founding Artistic Director of the Unlimited Potential Theater Company of Very Special Arts in New Jersey. She also inaugurated the Drama Therapy Program for the Center for Cognitive Rehabilitation at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Maureen is a member of the faculty of the School of Arts and Communication at The College of New Jersey where she teaches Integrated Visual and Performing Arts. Maureen is a proud member of both Actors Equity Association and Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. This production is dedicated to my mother, Connie Heffernan, who introduced me to Patsy Cline and Arthur Godfrey. ALEX ALBANESE (Bass) has performed in Fort Myers since 1982 on the first stand of the Southwest Florida Symphony bass section and in local Churches, Broadway Shows and jazz clubs. at Miami University of Ohio and Cincinnati Conservatory, Alex played a one-year position with the Florida Orchestra. Following that, he worked as a freelance musician based in Tampa Bay, performing as house bassist for Tampa Performing Arts Center for its opening three seasons, as well as with The Sarasota orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, and almost every professional orchestra on I-75 and I-4. He also worked with Seaside Music Theater in Daytona, 19 different cruise ships, national and international show tours, and a season with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Aguascalientes, Mexico. In 2002 he accepted the position as Personnel and Operations Manager for the Southwest Florida Symphony, where he continues to work today. He’s a bit of a history nut and avid poker player, having won entries to the Main Event of the World Series of Poker twice. TIM BILLMAN (Set Designer) joined the Florida Rep family in 2014 as the Technical Director and has become the Production Manager. Tim’s scenic design credits include productions for Blowing Rock Stage Company (NC), Temple Theatre (NC), Ensemble Stage (NC), Riverside Theatre (FL), Gardner-Webb University (NC), and the Blue Ridge Wine and Food Festival. He has served as the Technical Director for the Hayes Center of Performing Arts, Blowing Rock Stage Company, Troy State University at Montgomery and Riverside Theatre. In 2009, Tim was a founding member of Ensemble Stage, a professional theatre in Banner Elk, NC, now in its 10th season and just celebrated its 100th production. Tim also spent time supervising rigging installation and upgrades for theatres all across North and South America and is a charter member of the Mormish Council. He resides in Fort Myers with his wife Jamie and three children: Brooklyn, Jack, and Bridget. ANNE CARNCROSS (Lighting Designer) has been designing lighting for close to 20 years and is making her Florida Rep debut. She has designed for theatre, opera, dance, musical theatre and children’s theatre. She has worked as a lighting and scenic designer all over the country. Her work has been seen locally at Opera Naples, TheatreZone, Gulf Coast Symphony, Gulfshore Ballet and several educational productions. Currently Anne is an Associate Professor and the Design/Production faculty at Florida Gulf Coast University. She holds a BFA in Design from SUNY Fredonia and a MFA from Florida State University in Theatre Production. MATT KOLLER (Drums) is thrilled to be returning to the Florida Rep! Last season he appeared as the drummer in Tenderly, The Rosemary Clooney Musical. Matt is the founder and conductor of the City of Palms Youth Choir in Fort Myers, FL. Choirs under his direction have performed several masterworks, world
premieres, and have appeared in Carnegie Hall. He has conducted at Florida Gulf Coast University Opera, Gulfshore Opera, and teaches private voice lessons. His students have appeared in lead roles on Broadway, national tours, television, and film. He is a graduate of Westminster Choir College and is a member of The Same Stream Choir in Philadelphia. KATIE LOWE (Sound Designer) served as resident sound designer last season at Florida Repertory Theatre. Previously, she has been an electrics intern at Florida Repertory Theatre and sound apprentice at Endstation Theatre Company after graduating from the University of Kentucky. AMY L. MASSARI*† (Stage Manager) is pleased to return for her 11th season as Florida Rep’s resident stage manager and an ensemble member. Amy has been a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association for the past 30 years, working in some of the country’s finest regional theatres: the Alley Theatre (Houston, TX), the Dallas Theatre Center (Dallas, TX), Stage-West (Springfield, MA), the Pioneer Memorial (Salt Lake City, UT), and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (Boulder, CO). Among her favorite Florida Rep productions are The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Dingdong, Split in Three, The Fantasticks, Lend Me a Tenor, August: Osage County, Sylvia, and God of Carnage. Amy has been happily married to her husband of 23 years, Michael. Michael teaches theatre at Marymount Manhattan College in NYC and is a terrific partner and father to their children Jesse Cheyenne and Caleb Dakota. ROGER RETTIG (Pedal Steel/Steel Guitar) Originally from London, Roger Rettig began studying the guitar in the mid-fifties and turned professional in 1959. He went on to work with many of Britain’s outstanding artists - Billy Fury, Eden Kane, Marty Wilde, Joe Brown and many more - touring in variety as well as on rockand-roll package shows. He often appeared alongside the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and went on to work with George Harrison in the ‘70s. He found himself in demand as a studio player and, in 1974, added pedal steel guitar to his repertoire. He recorded with various artists, from Tom Jones, Phil Everly and Duane
WHO’S WHO Eddy to movie soundtrack maestro Leonard Bernstein. He also played on countless TV shows and advertising jingles. He went on to appear is several West End shows - Pump Boys & Dinettes and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas among them. He immigrated to the US in 1998 and has toured continually. Roger lives in Naples, Florida with his wife Susie. DAVID SONNEBORN (Bass), a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, is thrilled to be making his Florida Rep ArtStage Studio debut! He’s a longtime NYC musician, and an original cast member of the Million Dollar Quartet National Tour performing throughout the USA, Canada, and Japan. Regional productions of Million Dollar Quartet - Musical Director, Fluke (drums) Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Florida Rep, The New Theatre Restaurant, Westchester Broadway Theatre. Million Dollar Quartet - Fluke (drums) - Great Lakes Theater, Actors Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Gateway Playhouse, Ogunquit Playhouse. David has performed at the NY Musical Theatre Festival and toured nationally in Always...Patsy Cline and Honky Tonk Angels. He studied drums/percussion at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and theater at OSU. Specializing in western swing, David is the drummer for the acclaimed New York City based Western Caravan. Love to Becky and Audrey. KRISTINA TOLLEFSON*** (Costume Designer), a member of United Scenic Artists (the professional designer’s union), is an Associate Professor and Resident Costume and Makeup Designer at the University of Central Florida in
Orlando where she also serves as Undergraduate Coordinator for her department. She holds an MFA from Purdue University in Costume Design and Technology and a BA Degree from South Dakota State University in Theatre and English. In addition to her work at UCF Kristina’s costume designs have appeared in places such as The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery (Washington DC), Prague Shakespeare (Czech Republic), Shakespeare and Company (MA), St. Lawrence University (NY), DeSales University (PA), Maples Repertory Theatre (MO), Orlando Shakes (FL), Orlando Rep (FL), Purdue University (IN), Phoenix Theatre Indianapolis (IN), as well as at theatres in Texas, Florida, South Dakota, and Kansas. Kristina is the recipient of three Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival Design awards and numerous teaching awards. Her book, Too Much Is Not Enough: The History in Harriett’s Closet, with coauthor Jodi Ozimek, documents the expansive clothing collection of Harriett Lake. RACHEL VAN PAMEL (Assistant Stage Manager) is delighted to be making her Florida Repertory Theatre debut. Her regional theatre credits include two seasons with Trinity Shakespeare Festival in Fort Worth, Texas where she worked as Assistant Stage Manager on Measure for Measure, Richard III and Twelfth Night. Rachel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama from University of Dallas where she studied stage management. While she stage managed many shows throughout college, her favorite University Theatre credits include The Cherry Orchard and The Skin of Our Teeth.

ALWAYS... PATSY CLINE at Florida Repertory Theatre, directed by Maureen Heffernan, tells the true story of Patsy Cline's rise to fame through the account of a loyal fan who just so happened to become a close friend of Patsy's, Louise Seger. This show was incredibly fun. From the moment it begins until the very end, you're drawn into the music of the iconic Patsy Cline, including songs such as "Crazy" and "Walkin' After Midnight." And not only was this a musical tribute, but it was also an incredibly heartfelt story about how Louise Seger came to know Patsy and became one of her closest friends in a single night. Patsy and Louise may appear to be very different women, as Patsy has a slightly more sophisticated and polished personality as opposed to Louise's more straightforward one, but they share many life experiences and quickly develop a bond because of those. Becky Barta plays Louise, and I enjoyed every moment of her performance. She was hilarious, and the passion she showed as Louise for Patsy's music was perfectly clear. I loved her enthusiasm, and she got the audience involved in the show several times which I really liked as well.
Bethany Gwen Perkins plays Patsy Cline, and I thought she was spectacular. Her vocals were absolutely beautiful and incredibly similar to the actual Patsy Cline's. She had an elegance about her, but I also enjoyed seeing a more real side of her character as she befriended Barta's Louise. The bond these women had was really heartwarming to see, and these two actresses did a wonderful job showcasing it. The "Bodacious Bobcats Band" in ALWAYS... PATSY CLINE included Musical Director Alex Shields on the piano, Roger Rettig on steel guitar, Dave Sonneborn on bass guitar, and Matthew Koller on drums. They all
did a great job playing these very well-known songs, and I like that they really are part of the show, as they remain on the stage for the entirety of it. I definitely recommend seeing ALWAYS... PATSY CLINE if you get the chance. It was thoroughly entertaining and had a lot of beautiful sentimental moments sprinkled throughout it. Because it is in Florida Rep's ArtStage Studio Theatre, the show felt a bit more personal, and I think that worked very well for this story.

The Sunday matinee for 'Always... Patsy Cline' at Florida Rep ArtStage Theatre was performed to a sold-out crowd.
The musical is based on a true story and follows the friendship between country music legend Patsy Cline and a Texas divorcee Louise Seger.
New York Actress Bethany Gwen Perkins debuts her vocals locally while belting out 28 of Cline's best songs throughout the two-hour show. There are numerous and incredible costume changes revealing Cline's evolution. Perkins' recreation of Patsy's voice alone makes the show worth seeing, aside from her perfect performance. For those who may not know much about Cline, let me make it clear, you will leave the show feeling as though you do know her after hearing some familiar tunes including "Walkin' After Midnight" and "Stupid Cupid", two crowd clapping pleasers. If
you happen to be in the right seat like I was, you could get pulled onto the stage and dance in this very interactive show.
Actress Becky Barta helps move the show along with laughter and smiles as the sassy brash character, Louise. She charmingly and endearingly tells the story of how she met Cline during a performance in Houston in 1961. The two women strike up a real-life friendship nurtured through several years of letters that Cline signed with the phrase, 'Always... Patsy Cline' thus the title of the show before her untimely death at the age of 30.
A special mention should also include "The Bodacious Bobcats Band" which includes Alex Shields as "Joe Bob" on Piano, Roger Retig as "Jim Bob" on steel guitar, Alex Albanese as "Jay Bob" on bass guitar, Matthew Koler as "Bob Bob" on drums all of whom make us feel like we're at the Grand 'Ole Opry" in Fort Myers.
Certainly worth making time to see this one.

Over the years, I estimate I’ve seen close to half a dozen productions of “Always … Patsy Cline” at various local venues. Theaters love to produce it, because it’s basically a two-hander with a four-piece band. Created, written and originally directed by Ted Swindley, it’s based on a true incident of country singer Patsy Cline meeting one of her biggest fans in Texas and developing a friendship and correspondence with her. (This was back when people actually wrote letters 1/5
and sent them to each other.) So I wasn’t sure what to think when I learned Florida Repertory Theatre was going to open the season with it. It just seemed like a safe, conventional choice. Had this show worn out its welcome? Not with audiences apparently; even before opening night, the venue had extended the run (to Nov. 24). And I have to say, after seeing it, that Florida Rep’s “Always … Patsy Cline” is the best production I’ve seen of this jukebox musical.

It just knocked me out. When Patsy Cline (a very talented Bethany Gwen Perkins) appears onstage, it’s as if she’s stepped right out of the 1950s, or as if we’ve somehow been transported back in time. Ms. Perkins looks like Patsy Cline. And she sounds just like her — the sweet, low tones, the phrasing — whether she’s singing or talking. It’s the perfect combination of everyone at the top of their game: the hair and make-up, the dreamy dresses (Kristina Tollefson) one after the other, the lighting (Anne Carncross). And of course, the combination of gifted director Maureen Heffernan, a Florida Rep ensemble member, and Ms. Perkins’ own talent. The actress stands there in the spotlight, perfectly poised, in total control. It’s as if she possesses an inner stillness that just draws you to her. She has the audience in her spell even before she sings; we are totally entranced. And then she performs song after song: “Back in Baby’s Arms,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “Crazy.” There are songs that veer into early rock ’n’ roll territory, and a couple of hymns as well. She’s backed by the Bodacious Bobcats Band: Alex Shields on piano, Roger Rettig on steel guitar, Alex Albanese on bass and Matthew Koller on drums. (As of Oct. 1, Dave Sonneborn plays bass.) They’re attuned to her every nuance and worthy enough to be backing her. Becky Barta plays Louise Sever, the sassy Texas woman who sees Patsy Cline on “The Arthur Godfrey Show” on TV and is instantly a fan. She then calls her local radio station several times a day to request they play a Patsy Cline song. When Louise learns the singer is coming to town to perform, she’s beside herself. She attends, the two meet, and the rest is history.

Ms. Barta’s character is, in many ways, Patsy’s opposite. She’s outspoken, feisty, bursting with energy and quick with a quip. No shrinking violet, she sports a red beehive hairdo with banana curls on the sides. 3/5
She narrates the story to the audience, occasionally addressing individual patrons, asking questions or even coaxing one up to dance. Ms. Barta was in the original off- Broadway production and has acted in both roles around the country since then. The Florida Rep production is her 30th, and her experience shows. She works the audience like a professional comedian, and nothing throws her. It’s a role that can easily become a caricature, but Ms. Barta is too skilled for that. She’s the perfect foil for Patsy. This all takes place on an immersive set divided into three parts: bar, stage and Louise’s kitchen. When you enter the studio theater, you step immediately into a country western bar decorated in wood, neon, cowboy hats and dead animals (including a squirrel paddling in a canoe.) There’s a jukebox in the corner, beer signs and an actual working bar (beer and water only). The wall behind the bar is filled with black-and-white pictures of famous singers, including Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Little Jimmy Dickens. There’s even a photo of the Million Dollar Quartet (but it’s a publicity shot from Florida Rep’s production last season). As great as it looks, however, I think set designer Tim Billman might have tried to do too much in such a small space. Louise’s kitchen is on the far side of the theater, with a table and radio and a cabinet with Pyrex bowls. For those seated at the other end of the theater, the action seems far away and sightlines aren’t the best, even though it’s a small, intimate space. It might have been better if there had just been a suggestion of a bar, for a scene that takes up just a few minutes. And unless you’re seated in the middle, you don’t see the entire band. Sit on one side, the drummer is blocked by scenery; sit on the other, and you can’t see the keyboardist that well. I don’t remember a working bar in previous productions. It works for “Once” (at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater), but in this case, not so much. It might have been a good idea in theory, but doesn’t work well. Regardless, this is a spectacular production. Ms. Barta made me laugh and kept me engaged, and Ms. Perkins stunned me with her talent and her ability to channel Patsy Cline.

And mention has to be made, again, of Ms. Tollefson’s incredible designs. I lost count after Ms. Perkins’ fifth or sixth costume change, but each new dress made me envious all over again. If you love Patsy Cline’s music, rush to see this show. If you’re not familiar with her at all, this superlative show would be a great way to acquaint yourself. I thought that this was going to be a real snoozer...I was planning on leaving if it was. I thought it was sensational. The fact that the writing led this to be done by just 2 actors was amazing. I thought that both of the women were off-the-chart amazing. And, of course, my hat is off to the musicians! Space was pretty tight...many of my friends could not have sat through it. Bethany had a wonderful voice...when I compare her to Patsy Cline they seem like one and the same!! I just received an email about Patsy's last performance before plane crash - resemblance between them is amazing! I think this performance was one of the best I have seen since coming to the Florida Rep!! 10/21/2019 9:12 AM I thought the production was very good. The singing was excellent. The humor was great. I learned some things that I didn't know about Patsy's life. All in all, really enjoyed the play. My friend and I absolutely LOVED the show.The actors who played Louise and Patsy did a wonderful job of capturing the essence of the characters. We were sorry to have the show end!! Left us wanting more!! Also love the improvements you have made in the seating. Much more comfortable seats!! My wife and I agree on this statement . The actress who played the part of Patsy, can almost make someone want to believe in reincarnation...She was fantastic.
